Boston Boy - Chapter 7
A/N I’m going to start posting once or twice a week now. Give me time to work on the future chapters and make them great for you. But now, it’s time to meet the Allens!
Kate fidgeted in her seat, waiting for the few cars driving down the road to pass so she could cross and go down her street. Chris was sitting in the passenger seat looking at his surroundings. She lived kind of in the middle of nowhere. There were woods surrounding the road they were about to drive down. She slowed down near the fourth, well spaced out mailbox and pulled into the driveway there.
The brick rancher sat in a large clearing. Where the garage door used to be was a set of dark oak French doors with beautiful stained glass windows in the top half of each. The main entrance to the house was a single door similar to the French doors at the top of a wide porch. It was a wide dark oak and the stained glass was the entire middle of the door and on either side were long, thin stained glass windows. There was a large picture window in the middle of the house with jewel blue and chocolate brown curtains covering it.
Peeking out from those curtains were two dogs that Chris recognized as Denali and Galway. They were barking madly as Kate parked and turned the car off. “Home sweet home.” She said. “We’ll go in my doors here so we can get our bags in safely.” Chris collected his bag and grabbed Kate’s two bags as well. She had her purse and carryon bag and was unlocking the French doors.
“These are pretty.” Chris said, admiring the doors.
“Thanks. I actually picked them out. And the front door. It was a mother’s day present from me, my brother, and my step dad.”
“You’re the only car here. Where is everyone?”
“Work, probably. We got here earlier than planned.” Kate set her purse and carry on bag down on the leather recliner. “Well, this is my little garage apartment.” In the front was the recliner and a matching sofa set up in front of a 50” Samsung flat screen Smart TV. The TV was surrounded by a custom TV center made up of two floor to ceiling bookshelves, a row of cubbies above the TV, and an entertainment center below the TV. The bookshelves were stocked with all kinds of books, photo albums, and DVDs and BluRays. The entertainment stand was neatly organized with a desktop computer CPU, a Playstation 4, a Direct TV box, and a charging cradle for the Playstation controllers. Through the glass doors, he could see more DVDs and BluRays. The cubbies above the TV held knick knacks, stuffed animals, and picture frames.
In the middle of the room were the two large, folding screens with famous landmarks from England, France, and Italy painted on them. They extended from each wall, creating a wall of their own with a large gap in the middle that served as a doorway to the bedroom. Between the screen and the TV center was a small refrigerator and a counter with a microwave.
Behind the screen on the left was Kate’s queen sized bed with her stuffed Thumper sitting in front of the pillows. On the opposite wall from the bed behind the screen on the right was a large, custom closet set up that extended from floor to ceiling. There were small, shallow drawers for jewelry and larger, deeper drawers for clothing on one side. In the middle were two large doors that opened to the wardrobe. On the other side were shelves for shoes. On the top of it were cabinets for storing bags and other things. A folding footstool sat between a small flight of stairs and the shelves so Kate could climb up and collect things from the top cabinets.
The small flight of stairs led to a short hallway with two doors, one straight ahead with a small doggy door and one to the right. The one on the right was Kate’s bathroom. It wasn’t large, but it had a nice floor to ceiling shower, a good-sized vanity and a toilet. The door at the end of the hallway led into the main house. To the left was a step down into a utility room where the washer and dryer was along with a door to the backyard. To the right was the den with a fireplace and a custom built desk that extended across the far wall. There was a large and a small archway on one wall. The smaller archway led to the kitchen while the other led to the living room.
They didn’t make it past the den, though, because Denali and Galway were on them. They begged for love from Kate, rubbing against her and barking. When they noticed Chris, they both abandoned Kate to get love from the stranger in their house. Chris got down on his knees and played with them. Kate watched them for a few seconds before she went to the dining room to see if she had any mail on the table. A wall that stretched halfway across the house separated the kitchen from the living room. The dining room sat at the end of the wall, connecting the kitchen and the living room.
A hallway led from the living room to the three bedrooms and the bathroom. Her parents had the master bedroom, her old room, which was the second largest room, was now a guest room slash office, and her sister Janice’s room was the smallest room. The bathroom was a large bathroom with a stand up shower in one corner and a large, deep Jacuzzi tub in the other corner. There was a long vanity with two sinks and the toilet sat in a space between the vanity and the tub.
“Come on, guys! Go outside.” Kate said to the dogs as she rifled through her mail. The dogs ran ahead to the utility room and bolted out the door into the large, fenced in backyard as soon as she opened it.
“This place is nice.” Chris said behind her. “You grew up here?”
“Yeah. We moved in my sophomore year of high school and haven’t left.” She gestured at the yard where the dogs were running. “This whole area was terrible. Overgrown and there were tree stumps everywhere. My step dad has really fixed the place up over the last fourteen years. The next thing on his honey-do list is the kitchen. Mom wants new cabinets and a new dishwasher along with a new refrigerator. She’ll probably get a new sink and new countertops, too. Complete overhaul. Come on, Gally!” Her Boston terrier ran back in the house while Denali continued running around the backyard. “I don’t like to leave Gally out there. There’s a bald eagle that’s tried to take off with her a few times.”
“Shit!”
Kate picked Gally up and the pooch settled in her owner’s arms cradled against her chest, trying furiously to lick Kate’s face. “I know it’s a felony, but I will kill that bird if it harms one piece of fur on my baby.” She kissed Gally’s nose and set her back down on the ground to follow her and Chris back into Kate’s room. She flopped down on the bed and sighed. “I have missed this bed.” Gally climbed up the pet stairs on one side and marched up to the head of the bed, laying down on one of the pillows. Kate watched her and shook her head. “Spoiled brat.”
Chris sat down on the bed and laid back. “Wow. This bed is comfy.”
“I told you. It’s definitely more comfortable than yours.”
“Well, I still can’t judge that. I haven’t slept in it yet. Or done anything strenuous to test it out.” He rolled up on his side and ran his hand over her ribs. “I mean, we’re alone right now….”
“Travelling doesn’t take it out of you?”
“Are you tired?”
“A little bit.”
“Too tired for….” Chris was cut off by Gally walking up and licking him on his nose. Kate burst out laughing and Gally snuggled herself by Kate’s head. Chris laughed and rubbed the Boston’s belly. “Spoiled brat is right.”
Kate pushed Gally towards the edge of the bed. “Go lay on the couch.” Gally hopped down and trotted over to the couch with a huff. “Am I too tired for what?”
Chris leaned down and kissed her deeply, running his hand up her shirt. He was about to climb on top of her when a loud banging came from her front doors. They both shot up, smacking their heads together in the process. Gally started barking madly at the door, jumping up and down in front of it. A moment later, just as they finished putting themselves together, Kate’s step-dad unlocked the front door and walked into her garage apartment.
“Katie! You’re home early.” He said in his Southern drawl, petting Gally as she jumped up on the recliner to be loved on. “We weren’t expecting you until this evening.”
“Yeah.” Kate smiled at her step-father. “My flight was booked so we took an earlier flight together.”
“Who’s we?” He was looking Chris up and down.
“Papa, this is Chris. Chris, this is my papa Bill.”
“The Boston boy.” Bill nodded, still looking highly suspicious of Chris. “We’ve heard a lot about you. Mostly from her brother.”
“I’ve told you about him.” Kate insisted. Bill just grunted. “Ok, papa, you’re very intimidating. Good job. Chris is intimidated, aren’t you Chris?”
“Yes.” Chris said. He wasn’t entirely lying.
“You’ve done your fatherly duty, now be a normal human being for once in your life and be nice.”
“Where’s the fun in being a normal human being?” Bill asked.
“It’s completely underrated. Try it sometime, you’ll see.”
Bill held his hand out to Chris and Chris shook it, wincing slightly at the pressure the older man was putting on. “I’ve been to prison before, son, and I’m not afraid to go back. Don’t hurt my daughter.”
“Papa! Ok, out. Leave. Goodbye. I’ve got to get unpacked.” Kate hustled her step-father back out the door. Gally followed him out, but he shooed her back inside.
“Call your mother and let her know you’ll be home for dinner…. With a guest.”
“Ok. Love you.” Kate shut the door and shook her head, muttering to herself. “I am so sorry, Chris.”
Chris chuckled, petting Gally between the ears. “It’s ok. Has he really been to prison?” Kate shot him a look that told him her step-father was dead serious about that one. “Oh shit.”
“Don’t worry. Asshole McGhee is still walking this earth. So, you stand a chance against my papa.” Asshole McGhee was the name she’d given her ex that had cheated on her and nearly ruined her life.
“Good to know. Are you sure I shouldn’t get a hotel?”
“I’m sure. It was part of the agreement with my parents when I paid to renovate the garage into an apartment that they stay out of my business. This is my apartment, that’s their house. He doesn’t usually just barge in like that.”
“Extenuating circumstances?”
“Like me meeting someone in Boston on a trip by myself and wanting to make sure I’m not dead or suddenly have a pimp? Yeah. That’s his definition of extenuating.”
“So, you paid to renovate this place?”
“Yeah. I took out a small loan for it. I just finished paying it off earlier this year.”
“What happens when you decide to move out?”
Kate shrugged. “They’ll probably add a small stove and rent it out for more than they’re charging me.”
“They charge you rent?”
“Well, sort of. It’s kind of a roommate set up. I pay a portion of all the bills.”
“Oh. Sorry, I don’t mean to pry into your finances.”
“It’s ok. I’m going to start unpacking.” She handed him the remote. “Make yourself comfy.”

Later that evening, Chris was watching a Golden Girls marathon while Kate was stretched out on the couch beside him with her head in his lap. She’d fallen asleep and had stayed that way for almost two hours now. He didn’t mind. He happily stayed still and stroked her hair, running his fingers gently through the golden mass. She hadn’t styled it, so her naturally wavy hair was on display. He decided that he liked it better that way.
A knock at the door in the short hallway disturbed Gally’s sleeping form on the back of the couch. She shot up, barking, and jumped down on Kate’s hip. Kate yelped and curled into a little ball, glaring fiercely at her dog as she ran for the door. She sat up, rubbing her hip, and looked around.
“Ugh, what time is it?”
“About 5:30.” Chris said.
“Wow, I was out.” Kate stood up and went over to answer the door. It was her mother. “Sorry, I was asleep. Gally, hush! It’s just Granny.”
“You didn’t tell me you were coming home early. I would’ve come home early, too.” Helena said, hugging her daughter tightly.
“I meant to call you, but I fell asleep. But I’m glad we got here early so I could unpack. Now I can show Chris around tomorrow.” Helena spotted Chris standing up from the couch and let out a startled noise. “Mom, this is….”
“You think I don’t recognize Captain America?”
“This is Chris. Chris, this is my mom, Helena.”
“It’s really nice to meet you.” Chris said, shaking Helena’s hand. “Kat talks about you a lot.”
“She talks about you, a lot, too.” Helena replied.
“Mom!” Kate’s face was turning a deep pink.
“What? You do. How did I not know that your Boston boy was Chris Evans?”
“Quit being rude. And you didn’t know because I didn’t tell you. Also, you don’t pay attention to the internet.”
“I did see a story on Facebook yesterday about Chris Evans being at a game with some blonde girl. I didn’t think for a second it was you.”
“Thanks.”
Helena shrugged. “The pictures weren’t that great and I can’t see great anyway.” She looked at Chris. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Chris smiled. “I know this isn’t the most orthodox thing on the planet, but I really do like your daughter. A lot. I hope that we can get to know each other and I can prove to you that I’ll make a good partner for her.”
Helena nodded. “You’re polite. That’s good. I won’t grill you too hard right now. I think we’ll have time for that later if you’re spending the week. Right now,” She looked at her daughter. “I don’t feel like cooking tonight. Let’s go out somewhere.”
“Oh, I’m tired of eating out somewhere.” Kate said. “I’ll cook, if you want.”
“If you want to, but I’m not helping.”
“You say that every time and every time you wander into the kitchen and nitpick.”
Helena shrugged. “So what are you making?”
“I don’t know. Dinner.” Kate turned to Chris. “Do you wanna run to the store with me and we can pick something out?”
“Sure.” Chris smiled. “That sounds great.”
“Ok.”
“Take your sister, please.” Helena said as she headed back for the main part of the house with Gally hot on her heels.
“What? Why?”
“Because she needs to do something besides work and watch TV.”
“Mom, you have tomorrow off and you can make her do all the things then. I am not spending twenty minutes combing the store trying to find her because she’s roamed off somewhere. I just want to get the groceries and get back.”
“You’re being mean.”
“No. I’m being practical. If you want to eat dinner on time, then Jan stays here.”
“Fine. Have it your way.” Helena disappeared into the hallway and the door shutting came a moment later.
“Sorry.” Kate turned back to Chris. “Jan has this thing where she roams off everywhere we go. It’s a real pain in the ass when she does it at Target or Wal-Mart. I once spent forty five minutes searching for her at Target. And don’t get me started on taking her to the mall.”
Chris shrugged. “I didn’t think you were being mean.”
Kate grabbed her purse off the recliner and pulled her keys out. “Mom is always quick to defend Jan. Especially from me. Like I said, she still thinks I’m that misguided teen who was angry and took things out on my little sister.” She sighed as she opened the front door. “This week is going to be so much fun.”
“I think it will be.”
“You haven’t met Janice yet.”
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*
Kate had decided on salmon steaks, rice, and a roasted vegetable medley for dinner. She’d had to get a chicken breast for her sister because Jan refused to eat the salmon. Chris sat in the living room talking with Kate’s parents while she cooked. Jan wasn’t very engaged in the conversation. Her eyes were glued to the TV as they usually were. Gally was sitting in Chris’ lap demanding to be petted while he talked. Denali would come over and nudge him for attention, but Gally would manage to get his hands back on her.
When dinner was about ready, Chris offered to set the table. Kate directed him to where everything was located and he kissed her cheek every time he walked by. Helena came in and checked on the food for about the dozenth time, nodding her approval at her daughter’s cooking skills.
“We got pie for dessert.” Chris announced as they sat down at the table. “Key lime.”
“It’s the kind you like, papa.” Kate added.
“I don’t like key lime.” Jan said.
“Then don’t eat it.”
“Kate.” Helena warned.
“What? No one is forcing her to eat the pie.”
Helena rolled her eyes and looked at Chris. “Usually I would ask you what you do for a living, but that seems like a stupid question.”
“Why?” Bill asked.
“He’s Captain America.”
“Oh.”
“You liked ‘Snowpiercer’, papa.” Kate reminded him as she passed him the bowl of rice. “Remember? You watched it a few months ago.”
“That’s the one on the train, right?”
“Yeah.” Chris said.
“So that was you, huh? That was a good movie.”
“Thank you.”
“Mom was a theatre major in college.” Kate said to Chris. “I can’t remember if I told you that.”
“Yeah. You mentioned it.” Chris looked at Helena. “What college did you go to?”
“Southern Illinois University.” Helena said. “They had a good theatre program.”
“Were you on stage a lot?”
“I liked the backstage work more, but I did a few plays.”
“I guess Kat gets her creative side from you?”
“She gets it from both her parents. Her father is talented in his own right.” Bill snorted and Helena shot him a look as he scooped up a large helping of veggies.
“Mom won’t say bad things about my father.” Kate explained, a forkful of salmon on her way to her mouth. “She still thinks it’s wrong to speak badly of him in front of her kids.”
“I’ve got plenty of things to say if you want to hear them.” Bill said, shooting his daughter a mischievous glint.
“You’ll do no such thing, William Allen.” Helena said.
Chris looked over at Kate and she smiled slightly. “I took his last name after I turned eighteen.” She explained. “It used to be Loewenthal.”
“That’s a mouthful.” Chris said, seemingly demonstrating by shoveling a mouthful of rice into his mouth.
“Yeah. People have never pronounced it right.”
“Her father wouldn’t sign the papers to let her change her name when she was younger.” Helena said. “She had to wait until she was old enough.
“Kat told me about everything you guys went through. I’m really sorry that happened.”
“Thank you. So you’ve seen some of Kate’s pictures?”
“Yes, ma’am. She showed them to me in Boston. They’re amazing.”
“She does have a good eye for it. Katie’s always been creative. From the figure skating and the dancing to the plays she did in high school and now the pictures. She really loved to be on stage, though. The military base near here has a playhouse and they put on ‘Cinderella’ last year. She tried out for the lead role and was sure she wasn’t going to get it because she thought she was terrible at the audition. She ended up playing Cinderella every weekend for about six weeks.”
“Do you remember when I did ‘Grease’ that one summer back home in Kentucky?”
“Was that when they condemned the theatre?”
“Yeah.” Kate looked at Chris. “The place was really old and needed to be torn down, but for some reason, they let the theatre company do ‘Grease’. They had marks on the stage where it wasn’t a good idea to stand because you might fall through. And a good portion of the marks we were supposed to hit were right over or right next to the bad marks. The whole play was us hopping around and trying not to fall through the stage while singing.”
Chris laughed. “That must’ve been a sight.”
“I’ve got a video of it.” Helena said. “We converted our old VHS tapes to DVDs about a year ago. I’ll have to dig some out for you.”
“I would love that. Thank you very much, Mrs. Allen.”
“Oh, call me Helena. I feel old when people call me missus.”
“It’s because you are old.” Bill said. “You’re two years older than me, Mr. Allen.”
“I admit that I’m old. Catch up.”
Kate saw Chris smiling at her parents’ banter. She took his hand under the table and he turned that smile on her. “Usually papa isn’t so reserved. Give him a couple of days and he’ll be at the table in just his underwear and turning everything said into a sexual innuendo.”
“It’s a gift my husband has.” Helena said. “Some things he says you just sit there and wonder how he got from point A to point Sex.”
“He also wins the lottery a lot. But only scratch offs. Never the Power Ball or anything.”
“My luck doesn’t work with that.” Bill said. “I don’t know why.”
“Slot machines are goldmines for him, too.” Helena added. “We went to Las Vegas and left with more than we came with. I saved money for the trip and he took twenty dollars of it and paid for the whole trip with that twenty.”
“Nice!” Chris said. “What’s your secret?”
“It’s no secret.” Kate said. “He has a golden horseshoe jammed up his ass. Which I better inherit when you bite it, old man.”
“You’ve got to dig it out if you want it.” Bill retorted. “I’m not getting it for you.”
“I’ll just get the undertaker to haul it out.”
“He’ll probably steal it for himself.”
“Nope. I’ll be there taking pictures.”
“What about your brother? He’s first in line.”
“He makes six figures a year and I’m pretty sure he’s CIA. He doesn’t need a golden horseshoe.”
“Your brother is CIA?” Chris asked.
“I think he is.”
“He’s not CIA.” Helena said.
“He’s secretive about where he goes. He can’t talk about most aspects of his job. And he knows too much about things I can’t explain how he knows about them. He’s definitely CIA.”
“That’s kind of terrifying.” Chris said.
“Right!? I’ve been trying to get him to fess up, but he swears he’s not. I just say the brother doth protest too much.”
Chris looked over at Janice who had been quiet this whole time. “Janice, are you close with your brother?” Janice just shrugged.
“Don’t be rude, Janice. Answer him.” Helena said.
“Not really.” Janice said.
Chris tried again. “Kat says that you like movies. What are some of your favorites?”
“I don’t like superhero movies.”
“That’s not what he asked.” Bill snapped.
“Bill….” Helena started.
“Helena, there’s no reason for her to be so rude.”
Janice let out a loud huff and stood up from the table, storming off back to her bedroom and slamming the door. Helena closed her eyes in frustration and Kate shook her head. “Sorry, Chris.” Kate said. “She’s uh…. Well, I told you she’s a handful.”
Helena started to get up, but Bill stopped her. “No. Let her sulk. We’ve got company and she doesn’t need to be out here if she’s going to act that way.” He looked over at Kate. “The food is delicious, baby. I love it.”
“Thank you.” Kate said, happy that her step-dad had relieved the sudden tension. “I saw the recipe on Pinterest and wanted to try it.”
“You and your aunt.” Helena said. “You’re always on Pinterest.”
“Oh, like you’re not?” Kate shot back playfully. “Don’t forget I’m friends with you on there. I’m pretty sure you have ninety eight percent of the recipes on Pinterest pinned to your food board.”
“Eighty two percent.” Helena said with a laugh. “There’s some on there that are just plain silly.”
“Kat said you learned to cook in France.” Chris said. “That’s really cool.”
“It was one of the many places I learned.” Helena said. “My brother was stationed in Germany and I spent the summer with him a couple of times. I met this old French woman while visiting Paris and she invited me to come to her house because I loved food so much. I ended up living with her for a month while she taught me all kinds of things about cooking and baking.”
“Helena has lived a remarkable life.” Bill said. “But her best moments are when she’s asleep.”
“Bill….”
“Has Katie told you that her mother sleep walks?”
“No.” Chris said.
“Here we go.” Helena said.
“Our dog Ireland used to sleep on my side of the bed and she would nudge my hand to get me to pet her in the middle of the night. One night she nudged me and when I went to pet her, she wasn’t there. I didn’t think much of it and went back to sleep, but she did it again. So I opened my eyes to see her staring up past me with a weird look on her face. I look over and Helena is standing spread eagle against the wall like she’s being patted down by the police. I said, ‘Helena, what the hell are you doing?’ She didn’t even look at me. She just said, ‘Never mind. Go back to sleep.’” Chris started laughing and Bill joined in.
Helena rolled her eyes. “I think they’re making it all up.”
“No. You’ve scared the shit out of me with your sleepwalking.” Kate insisted. “I woke up one night when I felt someone staring at me. You know that creepy feeling you get? Well, I opened my eyes and she was right over me. When I said her name…. Mom, not her actual name…. She said, ‘Don’t fight the nuns. They’re going to kill you.’ Then she just stood up straight and walked out. I was scared to even move.”
Chris’ hand was holding his chest as he laughed. “Oh my god!”
“I was just trying to protect my daughter.” Helena said.
“I’ve been terrified of nuns ever since.” Kate joked. “Thank god it didn’t happen when I was going to Catholic school. That would’ve really fucked me up.”
“I don’t think Katie inherited that from me.”
“I didn’t. I just got the insomnia and the restless legs.”
“I keep telling you to go to the doctor about that.”
“I don’t see how those sleep studies work. I sleep bad enough as it is. Hooking me up to a bunch of machines and filming me isn’t going to make me sleep better. There’s no way the data is accurate.”
“My mom has RLS.” Chris said. “She hated the sleep study they did on her, but the medicine they gave her has helped.”
“Does it make her tired?” Helena asked.
“It knocks her right out.”
“Mine does, too. Katie picks on me at night when we’re watching a TV show and I start falling asleep.”
“It’s to keep you from saying something in your sleep that will traumatize me.” Kate said. She smiled as Chris and Bill started laughing.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*
Chris crawled into the bed in just his underwear as Kate finished up in the bathroom. They had stayed up kind of late watching home movies of Kate performing on stage and skating. Watching her skating videos had given him an idea. While Kate was at work Monday, he would have to look into making that idea come true.
Kate walked down the stairs and smiled at him. “That’s a good sight.”
“Hmm?” Chris asked, snuggling deeper into the bed.
“Chris Evans in my bed. I guess Princess Aurora was right.” She climbed in next to him.
“What was she right about?”
Kate pointed at the little wooden sign hanging by the stairs. It had the silhouette of Aurora dancing with Prince Phillip and in pretty scroll letters next to it, it said, “If you dream something more than once, it’s sure to come true.”
Chris chuckled. “Well, we are comparable to Phillip and Aurora. You said so yourself.”
Kate laughed. “Once upon a dream.”
Chris pulled her to him. “What did you dream about me doing in this bed?”
“Oh, a little of this and a little of that.”
He laughed. “You’re quoting the movie.”
“Of course I am.”
“I do love that movie.”
“Me too.”
“So, tell me. What does dream Chris do that I need to live up to?”
“You really want to know?”
“Oh, I really want to.” He nuzzled her just behind her ear, making her sudder.
“Well, in one dream he finds a pair of handcuffs that I own and uses those on me.”
“Kinky. What about specifics? What exactly does he do to you while he’s got you restrained?”
“Hmm…. There’s a lot of teasing with his mouth. Sometimes he has a beard and sometimes he’s Steve Rogers clean. I prefer the beard because it can tickle and scratch at the same time.”
Chris moved her hair away from her neck and started kissing her shoulder and neck. “What about with his hands?”
“Oh, he uses those too. I’m pretty sure there’s not one inch of my skin that isn’t touched by him.”
He reached down as far as he could and ran his hand up her thigh, over her hip, and across her ribcage before cupping her breast as he bit down lightly on her shoulder. “What else?”
“Um….” It was getting hard for her to think clearly with his roaming hands and his erection pushing into her backside. She could feel the slight movements against her as his hips pumped almost imperceptibly. “God…. Uh…. He spent a lot of time between my thighs. Biting and sucking and licking…. Jesus, Chris, I can’t even think right now.”
Chris pulled her onto her back and moved over her, attaching his mouth to her right breast. She let out a moan as one of his hands snaked down her stomach and dipped below her underwear. He made an almost purring noise when he discovered how wet she was for him. His fingers began to lightly swirl her clit, teasing her, as he moved his lips down her body. Before he reached her thighs, he looked up and grinned.
“Hold onto the headboard.” He said, voice husky. “Don’t let go until I tell you.” She reached up and gripped two of the slats of the headboard.
He smiled and went back to kissing, licking, and sucking his way around her thighs as he worked her underwear down her legs. Once they were gone, he spread her legs out and rested them on his shoulders. His tongue flicked out over her folds and she writhed under him. He gently raked his nails on her hips as he gripped them to hold her still. She held on tightly to the headboard as he sent bolts of pleasure throughout her body. Just as she felt the first waves of her orgasm start, he pulled his mouth away. She let out a squeak of disappointment.
“What happens next?” He asked, moving back up her body.
“Uh….” She shook her head, trying to clear the fog. “In that dream…. I don’t know.” He shot her a confused look. “I wake up before the next thing.”
“Well, I guess I’ll have to adlib.” He looked at her body appraisingly. “How much flexibility did you maintain from figure skating?”
“Guess you’ll just have to find out.” She smirked up at him and he chuckled.
“Oh, I intend to.” Chris sat up on his knees between her legs and reached behind him to grab her ankles.
Instead of keeping them spread once they were in front of him, he held them together and braced them both on his left shoulder. He leaned forward until her knees were touching her chest. She moaned when he pushed deep inside of her, the angle making her feel full of him. His pace was slow and steady, bordering on torturous. Their grunts and moans were almost in sync with each other. When he wanted to pick up the pace, he sat back up on his knees and spread her legs to either side of him, holding her knees against his ribs. He picked up the pace and was pleased to see that she never let go of the headboard.
“I thought…. you were…. going to…. test…. my flex…. ability.” She said, between thrusts.
Chris grunted and pulled out of her, dropping her legs. “You can let go of the headboard now and get on all fours.” She did as he asked, moving slowly so he could enjoy the show. Once she made it on all fours, he lifted her left leg up behind her and rested her shin on his shoulder. He was impressed that she didn’t even flinch. “How far up can I push this leg?”
“Well, I used to be able to reach behind me and pull it up behind my head. I don’t think it would go that far now, but try for a ninety-degree angle.”
He scooted closer and her leg went up, her toes pointing at the ceiling. He had to lean back slightly to enter her from behind, but when he did, the sensations were incredible. The angle was so different than anything he’d ever experienced before. She’d never tried this position before, either. They both couldn’t hold back the noises that escaped their lips. He felt her flutter around him and then seize down on him suddenly. She cried out into her pillows as he picked the pace up through her orgasm. Her hands dug into the covers and she collapsed down off her hands to her elbows. The new angle pulled him in deeper and soon she was coming again. When the last of her second orgasm began to fade, he felt himself about to go. She squeezed her pelvic muscles and he yelped, spilling himself inside her.
They laid on the bed staring at the ceiling and panting. Both of them were covered in a fine sheen of sweat. When they looked at each other, they both started laughing. He pulled her to him and she laid her head on his chest.
“How’s your leg?” Chris asked.
“Stretched and ready to go.” She answered. “The other one is a little jealous.”
He patted her right leg. “Next time.”

Oh, and Hestia and 11 for Harry Potter asks!
11: who's your favorite non-human character?
To be honest, my favorite non-human character is either Dobby or Aragog.
Hestia: describe your ideal house
I actually had a friend ask me this the other day and it's quite long. But the short of it is a 2 story, stone cottage that looks like a witch hovel.
Scene
You turn off the street through a rod iron, ivy covered gate, Down a treelined rough brick drive, the house is hidden from the road by trees and the gate that is half cobblestone half rod iron with ivy spilling over the top in spots. The house is seemingly placed on a pedistul with rock stairs built into the hill from the drive that leads to a rock path through the small lawn that is littered with purple thyme and wildflowers that grow about ankle height.
Surrounding the house is a small cluttered garden of herbs and flowers purposefully creating a wild forest of witchy and homeopathic ingredients that smell divine. There is a well positioned porch that wraps around the opposite side of the house with more potted plants littering around a few chairs and an end table which holds a vintage bed warmer being used as an ashtray. The front door is purple and rounded at the top. With 2 mini windows in it and iron support bars acrost the wooden panelling.
Inside the front door there is a little stone tile entryway with shoes littering the wall to the right behind the door with hooks for coats . To the left there is a small table against the parallel wall with mail and a bowl for keys and an umbrella stand with hats and scarves and leashes for the animals. Passed the entryway the floor changes to older wood flooring, at the end of the wall to the right opens to the dining room with a rough cut, viking style, repurposed wood table with 8 chairs atop an area rug. The table has a hidden leaf to accommodate the 4 chairs stored at various places against the walls of the room. There is a beautiful Victorian style China cabinet filled with a variety of different china patterns on the far wall. There is a buffet table on the adjacent wall (across from the large window that faces the lawn) with a lovely doily runner and dried flowers displayed with tall candlesticks on either side and a crystal candy dish on one side filled with butterscotch and peppermint candies. There is a sliding pocket door beside the buffet table that leads to the kitchen.
The kitchen is a moderate size with vintage tins for each bulk ingredient, drying herbs and flowers hanging all around. There is more ivy growing around the cabinets, which have fogged glass doors, and the bottom cabinets have curtains. There is a garden sink with a window looking out to the wrap around porch and an island in the middle with a grate hanging above it which stores baking pans and hangs pots/pans and various other things. There is a door way to the left of the door you just came through that leads back to the hallway and a walk-in pantry to the right with a hidden root veggie and wine storage beneath a trap door in the floorboard. On the opposite wall of the pocket door you just came through between the oven and the refrigerator, there is a farm door that leads out to the back part of the porch with a secondary screen door.
Going through the door to the left you're back in the entryway/hallway where you can see into the open livingroom passed the bottom of the stairs. Beneath the stairs there is the half bath, a simple toilet and sink set up. The livingroom has a small library in the front of the house surrounding a bay window that doubles as a comfy reading nook crapped in vintage lace curtains. (There is no TV!) There is a wood burning fireplace in the center of the far wall an alter is set up on the mantle with a swing arm that holds my cauldron over the fire fronted by a couple of wingback chairs. To the right further in the house there is a Victorian style couch with a small but long coffee table (with floor pillows stored underneath) facing a TV mounted to the wall surrounded by mounted gaming systems and music system complete with record player. In the corner there is a closet with records, movies, internet router, board games, blankets, and other various things.
Up the wooden stairs the floor the center of the layout is hall with 5 doors. The hallway in the upper floor curls to the left. And there are 2 doors on the left, one ahead, and 2 on the right wall and on at the end of the hall to the left. The closest door is at the top of the stairs to the right. Which leads to an office/library/craft room with shelf's lining the walls except the wall with the window which has a work desk that houses my computer, various printers (3d philament/resin, ink, and graphite), and the scanner. There is a closet to the far right which houses various tools, fabric, etc. In the middle of the room is another work table that looks more like an oversized cutting mat with a few chairs and stools surrounding it. Looks like we've had more than a few paint and marker fights over it. There is a rocking chair in the corner with a small foot stool that has a lovely crochet throw over it for reading when I don't want to go downstairs.
Back in the hall the next door is a full bathroom which has a lovely larger than standard tub in it with a small cabinet over the toilet and a farmhouse washing basin style sink. It is more of a vintage meets farmhouse style guest bathroom. With tile flooring and a small window with a stained glass. There are a few hooks for towels behind the door and on the wall beside the tub for easy access. A few small fluffy rugs to keep people from leaving puddles on the floor. The curtain for the tub is wrap around with some sort of quilted pattern on it. It's not a huge room but is big enough to bathe the baby while your teenager tries to fix their eyeliner in the mirror. Lol
(All of the floors are wood with at least one area rug in it to accent the color or mood of the room)
The next door you come too is a guest bedroom. It is about the size of the office with a queen sized bed pushed almost against the far right corner. There is a small end table with a lamp allowing for a bit of walking room between the bed and the far wall (opposite the door). There is a small chest of drawers across from the bed to the right with a vanity mirror and a vintage washbasin on top complete with pitcher and handtowel. Beside it is a small door to a closet with extra linens and pillows. It's relatively empty other than a few extra things like winter coats and a few hidden Christmas gifts for next year and a forgotten golf bag that dad left last time he was there to visit. Beside the door to the left there is a taller chest of drawers with a few pictures of family get togethers and fun memories on the walls. There are two windows one that overlooks the backyard and one that is on the wall opposite the door. It's simple cute and cozy.
The next door is the kids bedroom. (If I have three the guest bed will be the oldest siblings room before they move out and the younger two will more than likely be twins so they'll share or will segregate boy/girl etc.) The kids room is bigger than the guest room. With a bed coming out of the middle of the wall to the left. To the right there is a large mirror-double-doored wardrobe which houses clothes, shoes, uniforms, hats, winter wear etc. In the Tob there is a shelf for a few extra linens for sleep overs or whathaveyou. There is again 2 windows. There is a blown glass style window above the headboard of the bed which has a drapey sheer curtain that falls behind the bed, and there is a more stained glass window to the wall opposite the door that is behind a sort of work desk littered with books and papers and a laotop. Their school bag hangs by one shoulder strap off the chair. There is a more modern floor lamp beside it with a rubbish bin beneath it overflowing with wadded paper. There is a bookshelf to the right of the desk between the wardrobe and the wall full of novels and a radio/Bluetooth speaker. It also stores games and other things my kid has collected (stolen from me) over the years. On the wall to the left of the door is a huge lovesac covered in laundry next to the laundry basket in the corner. There are a vanity to the right of the bed and a small end table to the left (between the bed and the wall). both are littered with books, jewelry, makeup, niknacks, chargers, and a lamp. I don't want to know what's under the bed, but there is a small chaise at the foot of the bed. There is enough floor space to have a blanket fort or a small sumber party of about 6 kids.
The last room is the master suite. You walk in the door, and there is an attached bathroom to the left. Through a door at the far corner of the room. The queen sized bed is rod iron, with a lovely victorian Italian feel to it. It is against the far wall coming out from the middle with an end table on either side (his and her style). At the foot of the bed there is a chaise with shoes underneath. To the right of the door there is a window that overlooks the front of the house, it looks to have a bit of a window seat for reading. There is a glider chair int he corner beside the window. With a foot stool infront of it. To the left between the glider and the bedside table seems to be a combination of a quilt rack and a Butler station with a hanging suit and a little surface with my husband's daily accessories on it (wallet, belt, cologne, rings, knives, etc). To the left of the entry door is a bit more witchy/girly. There is a small writing desk that looks to double as a vanity with a collection of vintage and antique niknacks with drawers and built-in storage for my jewelry, knives, stamps, stationary, passports, etc. Between the vanity and the bathroom door looks to be a 5 panel changing screen where I have a few outfits hanging on a vintage clothes rack behind it. my silky house coat and a towel seem to have taken residence draping over one of the screen panels. Through the bathroom door there is a larger garden claw-foot tub with a Waterfall showerhead that takes up the majority of the back wall. There is stone tile flooring that also lines the walls about a 3rd of the way from the floor. The sink is to the left of the door and is a bit modern and standard with cabinetry beneath in storing towels (extras included) as well as toiletries and toilet paper. There is a cabinet over the toilet to the right that stores most of my body and hair products including my husband's few various products for hair care and maintenance. There is a small stainglass window that lets in natural light between the tub and the toilet where the towel rack is mounted just below it. And there are a few hooks behind the door as well as right next to the tub(to the left) for towels and robes for dressing.
When you go back downstairs passed the half bath between the stairs an dthe livingroom there is a sort of mudroom/laundry room. That leads to the back porch (is about 8 feed from the kitchen door which is to the right) to the left there is a set of stairs that lead you to the little bit of a backyard that has a trampoline and an in-ground pool. There may be a 2 door garage to the left where the workshop is for building and restoring/fixing things along with a section for gardening stuff. I really hate grads do there will be little pads of clover and creeping thyme as well as little gardens lining the gate and overgrown ivy with a few trees--one has a tree swing. Maybe the kid and my spouse plan on building a treehouse soon. I probably have a little garden labarenth hidden in the corner somewhere to do ritual outside. Or offering or whatever.
Yea... That's my house.

Castaway {ACOTAR/Chapter 5}
Word Count: 4,002
Summary: A modern-day University AU, from the A Court of Thorns and Roses universe. All characters belong to Sarah J. Maas. The idea for this fanfic hailed from prompts sent in by Anonymous, and @queen-archeron. You can read previous chapters here.
Author’s Note: And so our story begins. Let me know what you think. :)
Elain loved dinner parties.
But preparing for them was stressful.
At first, it was only supposed to be her, Nesta, Feyre, Feyre’s new boyfriend, and Azriel, who she invited to everything. But the guest count quickly went from four to six, as Cassian was now joining them, and so was Lucien.
She felt nervous, inviting Lucien to such an intimate gathering, but it had been brought up on their date the night before, and Elain felt rude for not inviting him.
So, she did.
Now, it was four o’clock in the afternoon, and she was rushing to get everything done by six. Azriel had promised to help, but he got stuck in traffic on his way home from work and had still not come by.
So, that left Elain to rummage frantically through her kitchen. So far, she had moved all of her finished designs into her bedroom, and out of the living room, stacking the tubs from the floor to the ceiling. She’d dusted, vacuumed, and filled a vase with freshly cut flowers from her teeny balcony-garden. She hadn’t been spending too much time at home lately, but she hadn’t realized how filthy the place had gotten in the last few weeks.
It didn’t help that she was a neat freak.
She spent the afternoon cleaning and scrubbing until the place was shining and smelling like lavender, leaving Elain exhausted by the time the clock struck four.
She’d just finished cutting up tomatoes for their pasta when a soft knock came from outside the door, followed by Azriel calling her name. “Elain?”
Rushing to the door, Elain threw her hair up in a ponytail before opening it to find Azriel….
Quite dirty.
His hair was a mess, and grease covered nearly every inch of his body. His white tee had a hole in it, just beneath the collar, and his blue jeans were stained with so many different things that Elain nearly went into cardiac arrest.
“Hey,” he smiled, sheepishly. “Sorry. I was going to take a shower before I came, but our water isn’t working. Cass is calling the landlord, but until then…..”
“Oh!” she moved aside, catching his drift. “Come in, come in. Use mine. Take your time, I’m doing good.” No, you’re not. You’re stressed. Keep cooking. Move, Elain! “Besides. Can’t have you coming to dinner looking like that.”
Azriel raised a knowing brow, a soft smile playing on his lips. “Don’t worry. I won’t touch anything on my way to the bathroom.”
“Good,” she said, closing the door behind him. “Don’t take forever, though. I need you to grill the chicken.”
“I am the grill master.”
“The grill master is getting a little too cocky.”
Azriel grinned as he kicked off his shoes, careful to keep them on the welcome mat before strutting to the bathroom.
Elain could hear the water begin to run as she took the chicken out of the fridge, and placed it on the counter, sprinkling a series of seasonings on the breasts as she called for Siri to start playing her “Elain needs to relax” playlist.
The timer went off, announcing that the garlic bread was done in the oven. After taking it out of the oven, and cutting off a slice for herself from the loaf, she wrapped it in foil and put it back in the oven, that had been turned off, just to stay warm.
After devouring the bread, because cooking made her terribly hungry, Elain went to make the sauce. The recipe was her mother’s creation, and Elain loved making it every chance she had.
Cooking was a lost art. And Elain loved it. There were three things that she had to do to feel fulfilled: design, garden, and cook.
Her first three loves.
A knock came from the door just as Elain poured all her ingredients into the pot and began to let the sauce simmer on the stovetop.
She glanced at the clock – it was only 4:30.
But when she looked out the peephole, she saw Lucien standing there.
He knocked again as she fell back against the door. “Uh, one second! I’m…..indecent!”
He could probably barely hear her over the music blaring through her Bluetooth speakers, but he replied with an okay nonetheless as she ran back into her bedroom.
She took her hair out of her ponytail and gave it a quick run through with her fingers. He was early, way too early. Elain hadn’t even had time to get ready. After tossing her tee-shirt onto the bed, and kicking off her jeans, she quick picked out a sundress before grabbing her lipgloss off her dresser.
She froze, mid-apply, as the smell of garlic radiated off her breath.
“One second!” she called again, over the music, as she threw open the bathroom door.
Just as Azriel was stepping out of the shower.
She froze.
He froze.
Elain knew she was staring, but she couldn’t stop. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t breathe as she felt her cheeks begin to warm.
He was dripping wet, the earlier grease fully removed from his body. His hair was pushed back from the water, drops dripping down across his forehead, down his neck, down the tattoos that ran across his chest, and down his arms.
She could see the scars on his hands, that she had only seen once before, when he had confided in her not even a year prior as to why he always wore his gloves.
Her eyes did not falter until she they traveled further down.
Her cheeks felt like they were on fire at the sight of him.
“I-“ she stammered as Azriel quickly grabbed the washrag he had been using to cover himself. “Sorry, I- I was going to brush my teeth, I - I didn’t – I forgot – I mean, I didn’t forget you were here, I just – my mind. It slipped my mind. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Sorry. I’m –“
“Elain.” He didn’t sound mad, but amused – although he had begun to blush, too. “Stop apologizing.”
“Right,” she said, standing there, awkwardly.
He cleared his throat.
“Oh!” she turned, finally, and quickly covered her face with her hands. “Um, okay, I’ll just…..I’ll wait. Outside. I’ll wait outside.”
Azriel stopped her just before she could step out. “Uh, could you hand me a towel?”
After a deep breath, Elain, with her eyes closed, opened the closet behind the door to retrieve a newly washed towel. She threw it in his general direction as she slowly backed out of the room, shutting the door firmly behind her.
She was embarrassed, yes.
But not because of what she saw, but because of how she felt when she saw it.
She had always thought Azriel was attractive in a cute, sensitive way, but just then….
He was sexy.
She waited to feel that her face had cooled off, and returned to its normal coloring, before greeting Lucien at the door.
“Hey,” she smiled, not inviting him in. “You’re here early.”
“I thought you could use the help,” he insisted. His usual suit was gone, and he was sporting khaki pants and a navy-blue sweater with brown, suede shoes.
Elain hesitated. “Oh, um, that’s kind of you…..but, I don’t think I need any help. Thank you.”
“Are you okay?” he asked, a single red eyebrow arched. “You seem distra-“
He stopped, and Elain knew just what he was thinking as Azriel opened the bathroom door, and stepped out, in nothing but her little, pink bath towel.
Lucien didn’t look jealous, though. There was nothing to be jealous of. They hadn’t even shared a kiss yet, even if their second date had gone better than the first.
“Oh,” he said, surprised. “I didn’t realize you had company. I should have called before I came.”
“No!” Elain replied, quickly. Too quickly. “He was just –“
“Nothing happened. I live across the hall,” Azriel said, calmly. He was always so calm, especially when Elain wasn’t. “My shower is out of order. Elain was kind enough to let me use hers.”
Lucien blinked, as Elain glanced back and forth between the two males, both who towered over her, and stood within arm’s reach. “I know you from somewhere.”
Azriel responded immediately. “I’m Rhysand’s brother.”
He didn’t have to elaborate. Recognition shone in Lucien’s eyes. They stared each other down, and as Elain looked down, mostly out of discomfort, she realized that Azriel had managed to hide his hands with his balled up dirty clothes.
As Elain took a deep breath, she inhaled the sweet scent of her vanilla body wash radiating off Azriel’s body, sending an unknown feeling through her stomach.
“I’ll be back to help with the chicken,” Azriel said, and it took Elain a second to realize he was talking to her.
He swept past Lucien and snuck into his door across the hall.
His boots still sat on her mat.
“Well,” Lucien cleared his throat, and graced her with a smile. “This should be a fun dinner, then.”
Elain just nodded as nausea, and uncertainty, coursed through her body.
“Oh! Come in,” she said, at last, finally greeting him as he deserved to be greeted.
Nothing happened, Azriel had said.
Elain wondered why that left her feeling so disappointed.
Cassian joined Azriel on the balcony, where he sat watching Azriel grill six chicken breasts.
“Do you think they’re even hitting it off?” he asked, about Elain and Lucien. “They don’t even act like they’re into each other.”
Azriel didn’t answer, he just gave his brother a pointed look before returning to his duty.
“I mean,” Cassian continued, “she saw you naked before him.”
From the next look he received, Cassian knew Azriel regretted telling him the story of what had happened earlier that afternoon. He had to tell him something, though.
Cassian was sitting on the couch when Azriel walked into his apartment, carrying his clothes, wearing nothing but Elain’s pink bath towel.
“Did she say anything? Was she impressed?” Cassian wiggled his eyebrows. “Did she linger?”
“No.”
Cassian grinned. “She did, didn’t she?”
He swore he saw Azriel crack a smile before rolling his eyes.
The balcony door slid open and Elain peeked her head out. Her voice was smaller than usual when she asked, “How’s it coming?”
“Good,” Azriel responded, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. “Should be done in about five minutes.”
“Good.” Elain loosened a breath. “Everyone else should be arriving soon. Oh! There’s Feyre, now.”
She closed the door without another word, just as Cassian caught sight of who had just entered. Behind Feyre, who looked an awful lot like her older sisters, was Tamlin.
“Is that O’Brien?”
Azriel nodded, without even turning around. “You’ve missed a lot with your horrific amounts of sleep the last few days.”
“Wait…..Feyre is the one Rhys was defending? When he got punched? By Tamlin? Elain’s sister, your Elain, is dating Tamlin? Our greatest enemy?”
Azriel chuckled. “Stop being so dramatic. Besides, it’s been years since we’ve even seen Tamlin. He could have changed since high school.”
Cassian blinked. “Did you miss the part where he punched Rhys in the face?”
Azriel didn’t reply.
“He still looks like a prick,” Cassian mumbled, as Tamlin embraced Lucien.
He’d forgotten about Lucien after all these years, the shadow that trailed Tamlin all throughout high school.
Something didn’t feel right about being in the same room as them, much less sharing a dinner table.
“Do you think –“ Cassian’s words froze on his lips, as the front door opened, and the last occupant trailed in.
He brought himself to his foot as he maneuvered his crutches around the balcony, and entered back into Elain’s apartment.
“There’s my future wife.”
She froze, and tensed up, at the sound of his voice behind her.
Feyre gave them both a questionable look, then shrugged, and continued her conversation with Tamlin.
When Nesta turned, her gray-blue eyes were full of ice. “Who invited you?”
“I did,” Elain smiled from behind her. “I believe you two have met.”
“Unfortunately,” Nesta mumbled.
“You missed our date yesterday.”
She shrugged, as she excused herself and hustled to the restroom.
“One day,” Cassian winked at Elain, who just smiled. “She’ll come around.”
Elain agreed with him, if only to make him feel better. “Have you met my sister, Feyre? Feyre, this is Cassian. Azriel’s brother. Cass, this is Feyre, and her boyfriend, Tamlin.”
“Hey,” he smiled at Feyre. “It’s nice to meet you.” Then, he looked at Tamlin, and gave him as polite of a nod as he could manage, in which Tamlin returned.
“Okay, then,” Elain blurted, once a silence had formed. “Shall we all sit? It looks like the chicken is done.”
“Sure,” Lucien smiled, trying to insert a good vibe, no doubt.
Elain sat at the head of the table, with Lucien on her right. Cassian left the seat to Elain’s left empty for Azriel, and plopped down in the chair next to it, across from Feyre and Tamlin.
The seat next to him was the last one left empty.
He had a feeling Nesta wouldn’t be pleased about that.
She had gone. She had gone to the park. Had seen him sitting on the bench, waiting for her, just as he said he would be.
She hadn’t left him waiting. She’d been there, within view, but she got scared.
She took three steps toward him, down the brick path at Harris Street Park, and froze.
Tears formed in her eyes, causing her vision to go blurry, and she couldn’t.
She wouldn’t put herself in that position, wouldn’t put him in that position. She wouldn’t make him think that she was normal, that she was willing to love another human being, and be loved in return.
She couldn’t love. She didn’t know how.
It was better this way. Better that he thought she was a monster, as most people did.
It was better than knowing the truth.
He could never know the truth.
So, she turned around. She left him there, and got in her car, and went home.
Alone.
Always completely, utterly alone.
They ate in silence.
Feyre knew very little about Tamlin’s connections to the two boys, who looked awfully similar to one another, sitting across the table. According to Elain, Cassian, Azriel, Mor, and Rhysand had grown up together. They’d been adopted in their early teens, becoming the only family that they had left.
Now, their connection to Tamlin? Feyre had no idea, other than the fact that they’d attended the same high school.
He had told her as much on the drive from campus to Elain’s apartment.
We all went to East Velaris High. He said it with a tightness in his jaw. We weren’t a part of the same groups.
And he’d left it at that.
Yet, as they sat at the dinner table – Lucien, Tamlin, and Feyre on one side, Nesta, Cassian, and Azriel on the other, and Elain at the head – the tension was overwhelming.
Feyre waited for anyone to say something. Anything. But no one did, not until Feyre had eaten the last bite of her mother’s famous chicken scampi.
“So, Elain, you and Lucien have been seeing each other?” Tamlin asked. He’d barely touched any of his food, and Feyre knew Elain well enough that she was offended, but too polite to show it.
Feyre swore she saw Azriel tense from across the table, if only for a second.
“We’ve been getting to know one another,” Lucien confirmed, on Elain’s behalf. “She’s lovely company.”
Elain simply smiled before taking another bite of her food.
“What have you been up to since high school?” It was Cassian who spoke, his question directed at Feyre’s companions.
“I’m the president of Beta Theta Pi. Getting my degree in business in the Spring,” Tamlin answered, shortly.
When it seemed he was done, Lucien cleared his throat. “I’m working at my father’s law firm. Right now as an assistant, but hoping to one day become a lawyer, myself.”
“Isn’t your father an ass?” Cassian asked. There was no malice, just simply curiosity.
Elain nearly choked on her food.
Lucien pursed his lips. “Some would say so.”
“Hmmm.” Was all Cassian said, before he helped himself to more of Elain’s cooking.
“What have you two been doing since high school?” Tamlin asked, leaning back in his chair and tossing an arm over Feyre’s shoulder.
“I’m a personal trainer,” Cassian replied, mouth full.
Tamlin barked a laugh. “What an interesting career choice.”
Cassian swallowed before leaning over the table, resting his elbows on top of the tablecloth. “I make good money. I’m fit enough to kick your ass any day of the week. And, I can assure you that I am far more successful than being the president of a party-frat.”
“Can we please stop saying ass at the dinner table?” Elain whispered, staring into her plate.
Tamlin’s cocky grin faded as he stared at Cassian, before dismissing him entirely. “Azriel? How about you?”
Lucien glanced from Azriel’s hazel eyes, down to his gloves, back to his face again. “Still wearing those gloves, I see.”
There was something lingering in his voice as he spoke that suggested he knew more of the reasoning behind why than everyone else.
Azriel ignored his comment, and he seemed uncomfortable as he replied to Tamlin. “I’m a mechanic.”
“Should have known you’d go after the dirty work,” Tamlin said.
Feyre gave him an incredulous look as Azriel’s eyes hardened. “What is that supposed to mean?”
Tamlin didn’t answer. Instead, he asked, “And what is Rhys up to these days? And Mor? Oh, Lucien, does Eris still –“
Azriel dropped his fork to his plate with a clatter. His jaw had gone stiff as those hazel eyes lurked with shadows.
Scooting an inch closer to his brother, Cassian asked, “Why don’t you tell us about your family, Tam? What’s daddy up to these days?”
Tamlin rose to his feet, Lucien not far behind, a hand rested gently on his friend’s forearm.
“Calm down, Tam,” Lucien whispered, barely audible.
Elain looked back and forth between Lucien and Tamlin, an unknown expression crossing her features – confusion, recognition, curiosity.
“Maybe we should leave,” Feyre said, rising to her feet. “Elain, thank you for dinner, I’ll call –“
“No, you should stay.” It was the first thing Nesta had said all evening. She was watching Tamlin as she, too, stood. There was a fire in her eyes that spoke of death. “Your company, however, should go.”
“Where he goes, so do I,” was all Feyre responded.
Nesta just shook her head before picking up her plate and carrying it into the kitchen.
Cassian quickly followed her, leaving Azriel and Elain staring at the risen trio.
“Thank you for dinner,” Feyre said, again, before taking Tamlin’s hand.
Lucien was frozen. He looked to Elain, then back at Tamlin.
“Go,” Elain said, quietly. “If you want to go, go.”
He looked to Azriel, who was watching Elain, before nodding. “I’ll call.”
Elain didn’t say anything else as Feyre and Tamlin, hand in hand, and Lucien Vanserra, left.
He was sitting out on the balcony, his foot propped up on the lawn chair across from the one he was sitting in.
Nesta watched him from inside, cautiously.
“Why don’t you go say hi?” Elain asked, making her jump.
“Sorry,” she mumbled. “I didn’t hear you coming.”
“He’s into you,” Elain said, in way of response.
“And Azriel is into you,” Nesta snapped, “but I don’t see you making a move.”
Elain’s cheeks turned pink, and Nesta’s hostility instantly faded. “Oh my - Did you make a move?”
“No,” she replied, quickly. “But I may have walked in on him. In the shower.”
Nesta blinked, urging her to continue.
Elain’s voice rose ten octaves as she said, “He showers naked.”
“You saw him?” Nesta said, putting emphasis on him.
Elain nodded, burying her face in her hands. “I’ve hardly talked to him since. I’m mortified. And he is not into me. We’re just friends.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“And?”
When Elain looked back up at her sister, her entire face was the shade of a cherry. “He’s…..well sized.”
Nesta couldn’t help it – she laughed. She howled, as she covered her mouth, as Elain begged her to hush.
And it had been a long, long while since Nesta Archeron laughed.
She had forgotten what it was like. To laugh. To find humor in something. The tingly sensation that swept through her body as it shook with giggles.
The clattering of cutlery against glass broke them out of their conversation.
Azriel was by the table, picking up the dishes, and carrying them into the kitchen.
“I should help him.”
Nesta nodded, her laughter having faded into oblivion, as she watched her sister disappear into the kitchen.
She looked back toward the balcony, to find that Cassian was watching her. After a deep breath, she opened the sliding door and allowed the cool, Autumn, night air to greet her.
“Hey,” he said, surprised.
“Hey,” Nesta said, plainly. “That was an interesting dinner.”
“Yeah,” he said, guiltily. “I should apologize to Elain.”
“It’s not your fault he was acting like a prick.”
Cassian raised his brows at the vulgarity falling from her lips, but nodded.
“What happened between all of you, anyway?”
Cassian grinned. “Maybe I’ll tell you someday, when you show up for one of our dates.”
Well. That was short lived.
Nesta rolled her eyes. “One rejection wasn’t enough for you?”
“I’m not one to give up, Nesta Archeron,” he said, with a wink. “I’m going to be waiting by the pond at Harris Street Park every day until you show up.”
She shook her head. “You’re impossible.”
With that, she turned around to storm back into the house.
He drove her crazy, with that lopsided grin and easy-going, flirtatious attitude.
Just before she could shut the sliding door, leaving him alone on the balcony beneath the stars, he heard him call, “Every day! I’ll be there at noon!”
Azriel was scrubbing at the dishes when Elain walked into the kitchen.
They hadn’t talked much that afternoon, after the incident. Azriel wasn’t all that embarrassed. It was uncomfortable, sure, but he could tell Elain was completely mortified.
“Hey,” she said, quietly, coming up beside him. “Need help?”
“Sure,” he smiled. His gloves had been placed in his back pocket, but he didn’t feel the need to hide his hands. Not around Elain.
Azriel stood on the soapy side of the farmhouse sink while Elain stood in front of the other, ready to rinse and dry.
“I’m sorry about earlier,” she said.
Azriel laughed. “I’m not.”
She practically dropped the plate she was holding as Azriel clarified. “I, uh, didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that it’s not a big deal.”
She nodded, but she was unable to get the site of his bare body out of her mind. She had been thinking about it all afternoon, feeling dirty all the while.
“Az?” she asked, after a few minutes of comfortable silence.
“Hmmm?” he asked, pleasantly.
“Can you tell me what happened?” she asked. The sponge in his hands seemed to move slower as she continued, “Between your family, and Tamlin, and….Lucien.”
He didn’t answer right away, but Elain continued to push. “My family is involved now, too. I need to know. Because what just happened around that table…..was not nothing.”
“I don’t want to ruin anything for you,” he said, simply.
Elain turned off the water and dried her hands. “Stop thinking that I’m a fragile child, Azriel. I’m a grown woman.”
He stopped, at the demand in her voice, the urgency. “I didn’t mean to offend you.”
“I need you to tell me.”
He dried off his hands, leaving the dishes sitting in the warm, soapy water. “You may want to sit.”
Elain was taken back. “Why?”
Azriel ran his fingers through his long, dark hair. “Because there’s a lot to tell.”

5 Things to Love About the Seabourn Encore Cruise Ship
01 of 06
Seabourn Style With Updated Offerings
Seabourn
Seabourn Cruises launched the 600-passenger Seabourn Encore in December 2016, and the ship was christened in January 2017 in Singapore. Although the basic model of the Seabourn Encore is about the same as the brand's older ships, this newer ship is slightly larger, and hosts exciting new dining venues and onboard programs and activities.
Cruise travelers new to Seabourn will appreciate the almost-all-inclusive fare. All alcoholic drinks (except some premium wines and spirits), soft drinks, beer, water, and specialty coffees and teas are included. None of the restaurants charge a fee. All of the accommodations have a refrigerator, which is stocked with your personal favorites, and 24-hour room service is included at no charge. About the only extras are the shore excursions, The Retreat relaxation area, and spa & wellness treatments. The company has a free shuttle in most ports of call, so those who like to explore on their own can practically pay for their entire vacation in advance.
Like other Seabourn ships, the Seabourn Encore sails worldwide itineraries. And, since most of the voyages do not repeat, many travelers book back-to-back cruises. For example, in the ship's first two years of service, she visits dozens of ports of call in Southeast Asia, Australia, the South Pacific, Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe.

Dining on the Seabourn Encore Cruise Ship
Seabourn
The Seabourn Encore cruise ship has five dining venues and 24-hour room service. Each evening during turndown service, guests receive a copy of the daily dinner menu at all the restaurants. None of the restaurants or dining venues on the ship have an extra surcharge.
Three venues on the ship are familiar to past Seabourn cruisers: The Patio, The Colonnade, and The Restaurant.
The Patio is the Seabourn Encore's outdoor dining venue next to the swimming pool and mid-ship on deck 9. The Patio is open for al fresco lunch with salads, sandwiches, burgers, and daily specials like tacos, gyros, oriental, or roasted chicken. At dinner, the appetizers are served buffet style with the main courses coming from the menu. Grilled items like steak, fish, and seafood are the most popular, and most dinners include a pasta option.
The Colonnade is the Seabourn Encore's deck 9-aft restaurant and has buffet dining at breakfast and lunch. Seating is either indoors or outdoors, and the outdoor views and evening sunsets over the ship's wake are spectacular. Dinner usually features a different international theme each evening such as French, Italian, Australian, or Indian. Two nights each week are reservation-only and feature dishes designed by Seabourn's culinary partner Thomas Keller, the world-renowned American chef responsible for five famous restaurants ashore, including The French Laundry and Per Se.
The Restaurant is the main dining venue on the Seabourn Encore. Located mid-ship on deck 4, this elegant venue features open seating and exceptional food and service. The Restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner, and dishes are selected from a menu. In addition, it is usually open for lunch on sea days.
Seabourn introduced Thomas Keller-inspired menus and items to its cruise ships in 2016, so it wasn't unexpected that the famous chef has a dedicated restaurant on the Seabourn Encore: The Grill by Thomas Keller. The Grill is located on deck 8 aft and is open most evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm for dinner. There's a nice bar nearby to sip a cocktail while waiting for dinner. This venue is very popular, so guests need to make their reservations as soon as possible. Often the first night, last night, formal night, or very early or very late are the easiest times to score a reservation.
Sushi is the second new dining venue on the Seabourn Encore. It's Seabourn's first dedicated-sushi restaurant and is an intimate venue located mid-ship on deck 8, with bar and table seating. Like the other venues, the Sushi menu is found in each day's schedule. It's fun to watch the master sushi chefs at work, and the selection of rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and small plates is innovative and beautifully presented.
The lounges and bars on the Seabourn Encore are similar to those seen on the other Seabourn ships. The one new bar is inside The Grill by Thomas Keller on deck 8. The Observation Bar on deck 11 is a favorite of many cruisers since it has the amazing views of the sea. Although it's a great place for a before or after dinner drink, the afternoon tea and snacks shouldn't be missed.

Seabourn Encore Suites and Accommodations
Seabourn
All of the 300 accommodations on the Seabourn Encore are classified as suites, and the ship has six different types of suites available in several different categories. The categories are similar in size and location to those in the Odyssey-class of Seabourn ships like the Seabourn Sojourn suites, and the decor is contemporary and well-designed. The price of each accommodation category varies based on size and location.
The 470 Veranda Suites are the smallest accommodations on the Seabourn Encore, but on most cruise ships they would be some of the most spacious and luxurious. These suites have about 300 square feet of inside space, plus an 85 square foot balcony. All the Veranda Suites have a small sitting area, queen-size bed or two twin beds, dining table for two, walk-in closet, interactive flat-screen television with music and movies, fully stocked bar and refrigerator, makeup vanity, and bathroom with separate tub and shower. The suites also have luxurious linens and premium bath amenities along with robes and slippers to use while on your cruise.
The 14 Penthouse Suites on the Seabourn Encore have 436 square feet inside and 98 square feet outdoors on the veranda. These suites have all the amenities found in the Veranda Suites, but the sleeping area is separate from the living area, which allows more privacy. The dining table sits two to four guests, so in-suite entertaining is easier.
The five Penthouse Spa Suites have glorious aft views from deck 11 and measure 536 to 539 square feet of inside space plus a veranda of 167 to 200 square feet. These suites have all the amenities of the Penthouse Suites, plus complimentary full-day access to The Spa at Seabourn serene area, a second refrigerator stocked with waters, juices, and healthy snacks, and additional spa products and amenities.
The seven Owner's Suites measure 526-593 square feet inside and a veranda of 133-354 square feet. They have a separate bedroom and dining table that seats four. The suite also has special features like an espresso machine, fresh flowers, fruit basket, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a visit to the navigational bridge when the ship is in port.
The two Signature Suites are forward on deck 8, so have the same views as the Captain and navigation team have from the bridge. These suites have 859 square feet of inside space, plus a huge veranda of 493 square feet, so these suites are perfect for those who love private outdoor spaces. Although the Signature Suites do not have a solarium, they do have all the other special features and perks found in the Wintergarden Suites and Owner's Suites.
The two Wintergarden Suites mid-ship on deck 8 have the ship's largest inside space, measuring 914 square feet inside plus a 138 square foot outdoor veranda. Part of the veranda is a solarium with large soaking tub and daybed, which is perfect for napping. The large suite has a dining table for six, separate guest half-bath, pantry with wet bar, two flat-screen televisions, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Seabourn Square
Seabourn
Seabourn Square, which is aft on deck 8, is the hub of the Seabourn Encore cruise ship. Seabourn Square replaces the traditional reception desk found on most cruise lines. Instead of standing in line, those guests with questions, problems, or requests can meet with a concierge staff member in a private, sit-down setting. Seabourn Square also has a shore excursion desk, computer center, library, and living room-type seating area.
Even with all of these features in the Seabourn Square, the most popular area is the coffee shop, which is open from early in the morning (about 6:15 a.m.) until 6 p.m. and then opens again from about 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. The coffee bar serves specialty coffees, light breakfast (pastries), sandwiches, and cookies, all of which are included in the basic fare.

Seabourn Encore Swimming Pool and Outdoor Areas
Seabourn
The Seabourn Encore has a large outdoor swimming pool on deck 9 and many comfortable lounges on the outdoor decks and surrounding the pool. Bar staff circulate the area and offer complimentary cold drinks all day, so guests don't even have to move from their chosen spots. The swimming pool is flanked by two whirlpools, and The Retreat also has a whirlpool.
Those looking for a more intimate area might want to check out the small pool and two whirlpools on deck 5 aft behind The Club lounge. It's often never found by those who don't frequent The Club.

The Seabourn Encore Spa
Seabourn
Cruise travel can be one of the most active vacations or it can be one of the most relaxing, depending on what you want to do with your precious time off. Although the Seabourn Encore travels to many of the world's most amazing destinations, her guests can also choose to just relax by the pool, escape from it all in The Retreat, or visit the spa or fitness center to relieve some of the stress in their lives.
Seabourn has partnered with Dr. Andrew Weil to provide a new Spa & Wellness program that will appeal to many cruise travelers. An onboard Wellness Guide who is a certified yoga and meditation practitioner leads sessions in Mindful Meditation and yoga along with holistic spa and wellness experiences that include physical, social, environmental and spiritual well-being.

How to Make the Most of 500 Square Feet: See How This City Renter Did It
When Lola Simmons and boyfriend Garrett Moore began looking for an apartment in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, they were hoping to spend around $1,400 on monthly rent. So when the pair found their dream spot for just over $1,000 a month in Seattle’s infamously difficult rental market, they knew they’d struck gold.
“I walked in, and after about two minutes, I said, ‘Yep, I’ll take it,’” says Simmons.
From there, the process was easy, and the couple experienced little surprise throughout their move-in - besides an out-of-commission antique freight elevator on move-in day.
We sat down with Simmons to discuss how she found the perfect rental and how she’s made the cozy 500-square-foot space into a home over the past three years - including turning the walk-in closet into a bedroom.
How did you find this place? Garrett’s good friends lived here, and they were moving out. We’d gone and looked at a bunch of low-income houses that were sketchy, smelly and small, and we just kind of stumbled upon this place. They were looking for someone to take over their lease.
So after the lease was up, you renewed? Did the price change? Yeah. When we moved in, I think it was $1,050, and when we renewed the lease, it went up to $1,245. Now it’s $1,270.
And what about utilities? They have a set rate included in the rent, which I thought was a unique way to do it. The only thing we pay for is electricity, which is about $40 every three months or so.
Other than it being a great deal, what else drew you to this place? I’ve always wanted to live in this building, ever since I moved to Capitol Hill. Everyone’s lived in this building. It’s kind of special.
I think it’s so cool that every apartment in this building is different. Each one has its own character. Even if you go into another one with the same layout, it’s still totally different. Some flooring is different or the tile in the kitchen. It’s really interesting.
When the old building manager was here, he’d leave the doors unlocked for me so I could go into the empty apartments and look at the different layouts.
It can be easy for a rental to look basic, but you’ve totally personalized yours. How did you make your space unique? I’m drawn to that '70s palette that’s really saturated and drab, and also those really bright '80s colors. I’ve acquired a lot of stuff. I think as much as I’d like to be a minimalist, I like to have stuff.
We’ve got a lot of plants, and I think tending to those is really fun. Learning about them, making it cozy for the cats - there’s really nowhere in here they can’t be.
Having a lot of music and books and colors everywhere was really something that I was working toward, and I just really love the junk stores, so I go and buy a bunch of stuff. It scratches the itch, you know?
It’s hard for me to understand why people would spend a ridiculous amount of money on stuff. I like to mismatch stuff and make it work. It’s not as easy as buying straight from IKEA, but you’re not going to find the same stuff in someone else’s house. The thrill of the hunt is important to me.
Garrett has a lot of worldly things like instruments and things from his travels, and it definitely goes with my stuff, but it makes it feel more cultured.
Other than sourcing interesting items, what’s been your greatest challenge with your apartment? There have been a lot.
The outlets. It’s an old building - it was built in the early 1900s, and you have all these gadgets today. From our living room outlet, we run a cord into the closet, which is also the bedroom, so we can charge our phones at night.
When we first moved in, the only outlet in the bathroom was the one attached to the light fixture. It was blown out when we first started living here, so I had to blow-dry my hair in the living room.
When we moved in, I had a queen-size bed, and basically it was sandwiched in there with the edges coming up on the sides against the walls. We ended up getting a full-size bed, and it fits perfectly - exactly. I mean, if the bed was a quarter of an inch bigger it wouldn’t fit.
And then storage is a huge challenge - making it look like it’s not just a bunch of stuff everywhere. We have a lot of under-the-bed storage. You have to get really creative.
So what do you want out of your next rental? I really want a bathroom that has a huge clawfoot tub with a lot of natural light. An actual-sized bedroom, to be able to walk on either side of the bed, maybe have a nightstand. And I just want a really big kitchen.
Despite what it lacks in space and outlets, how do you feel about your apartment? My childhood was all over the place, and we moved around a lot, and I never had that sense of “home.” We’re entertaining the idea of moving to California because of the seasons - it gets kind of hard when it gets cold and gray.
I’ll be really sad to leave this apartment. It’s honestly the first place I’ve lived that I’ve really, really loved.
Lola’s tips for small-space living on a budget
1. Live with a complementary partner
I think if you’re going to live in a small space, you have to really have a plan about responsibilities, because they pile up. And he pretty much lets me have my way when it comes to design, which is good.
2. Get creative with storage solutions
A lot of that isn’t stuff that comes to me right away, but I experiment by moving stuff around and asking if it’s functional - is it in my way? Does it serve the purpose I’m looking for?
It sometimes takes a long time. It’s a lot of measuring and returning things, and it’s not always easy, but I think it’s rewarding. I feel really accomplished when something fits perfectly.
3. Let your space evolve
I’m not very patient whatsoever, but something I’ve learned is that when you don’t have a large budget or you shop the way I do at secondhand stores, you have to be patient. You don’t know what they’re going to have.
You also have to cycle things out. Our free pile in this building is great - I’ve gotten so many cool things from that.
4. Look for unique ways of acquiring items
I got a table from the free pile, and the top was really worn down, so I was going to sand it and restain it. But once I sanded it, I realized it was particle board, so I returned all those supplies and got paint. I also added a shelf below it to put my blankets.
I think repurposing things and making sure they fit with all your other stuff is the trick. There’s a bunch of other shelves in here I painted the same color with the rest of the paint. They were different colors, and it looked kind of weird, so I but painted them orange.
You work with what you have. I think it’s really fun, because I like DIY projects. Being able to think of what you want and then create it with a really small amount of money is really pleasing to me.
5. Measure the benefits against the costs
Our security deposit was only about $300, so if we did want to repaint at any point, I might consider taking that hit. You want your space to look the way you want, you know? It’s a lot of work, though, to paint a whole room, so I’d have to really think about it.

The outlets. It's an old building - it was built in the early 1900s, and you have all these gadgets today.
I mean, if the bed was a quarter of an inch bigger it wouldn't fit.
And then storage is a huge challenge - making it look like it's not just a bunch of stuff everywhere.
My childhood was all over the place, and we moved around a lot, and I never had that sense of "home." We're entertaining the idea of moving to California because of the seasons - it gets kind of hard when it gets cold and gray.
I'll be really sad to leave this apartment. It's honestly the first place I've lived that I've really, really loved.
Lola's tips for small-space living on a budget 1. Live with a complementary partner
I think if you're going to live in a small space, you have to really have a plan about responsibilities, because they pile up. And he pretty much lets me have my way when it comes to design, which is good.
2. Get creative with storage solutions
A lot of that isn't stuff that comes to me right away, but I experiment by moving stuff around and asking if it's functional - is it in my way? Does it serve the purpose I'm looking for?
It sometimes takes a long time. It's a lot of measuring and returning things, and it's not always easy, but I think it's rewarding. I feel really accomplished when something fits perfectly.
3. Let your space evolve
I'm not very patient whatsoever, but something I've learned is that when you don't have a large budget or you shop the way I do at secondhand stores, you have to be patient. You don't know what they're going to have.
You also have to cycle things out. Our free pile in this building is great - I've gotten so many cool things from that.
4. Look for unique ways of acquiring items
I got a table from the free pile, and the top was really worn down, so I was going to sand it and restain it. But once I sanded it, I realized it was particle board, so I returned all those supplies and got paint. I also added a shelf below it to put my blankets in.
I think repurposing things and making sure they fit with all your other stuff is the trick. There's a bunch of other shelves in here I painted the same color with the rest of the paint. They were different colors, and it looked kind of weird, so I but painted them orange.
You work with what you have. I think it's really fun, because I like DIY projects. Being able to think of what you want and then create it with a really small amount of money is really pleasing to me.
5. Measure the benefits against the costs
Our security deposit was only about $300, so if we did want to repaint at any point, I might consider taking that hit. You want your space to look the way you want, you know? It's a lot of work, though, to paint a whole room, so I'd have to really think about it.

How to Make the Most of 500 Square Feet: See How This City Renter Did It
When Lola Simmons and boyfriend Garrett Moore began looking for an apartment in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, they were hoping to spend around $1,400 on monthly rent. So when the pair found their dream spot for just over $1,000 a month in Seattle's infamously difficult rental market, they knew they'd struck gold.
"I walked in, and after about two minutes, I said, 'Yep, I'll take it,'" says Simmons.
From there, the process was easy, and the couple experienced little surprise throughout their move-in - besides an out-of-commission antique freight elevator on move-in day.
We sat down with Simmons to discuss how she found the perfect rental and how she's made the cozy 500-square-foot space into a home over the past three years - including turning the walk-in closet into a bedroom.
How did you find this place? Garrett's good friends lived here, and they were moving out. We'd gone and looked at a bunch of low-income houses that were sketchy, smelly and small, and we just kind of stumbled upon this place. They were looking for someone to take over their lease.
So after the lease was up, you renewed? Did the price change? Yeah. When we moved in, I think it was $1,050, and when we renewed the lease, it went up to $1,245. Now it's $1,270.
And what about utilities? They have a set rate included in the rent, which I thought was a unique way to do it. The only thing we pay for is electricity, which is about $40 every three months or so.
Other than it being a great deal, what else drew you to this place? I've always wanted to live in this building, ever since I moved to Capitol Hill. Everyone's lived in this building. It's kind of special.
I think it's so cool that every apartment in this building is different. Each one has its own character. Even if you go into another one with the same layout, it's still totally different. Some flooring is different or the tile in the kitchen. It's really interesting.
When the old building manager was here, he'd leave the doors unlocked for me so I could go into the empty apartments and look at the different layouts.
It can be easy for a rental to look basic, but you've totally personalized yours. How did you make your space unique? I'm drawn to that '70s palette that's really saturated and drab, and also those really bright '80s colors. I've acquired a lot of stuff. I think as much as I'd like to be a minimalist, I like to have stuff.
We've got a lot of plants, and I think tending to those is really fun. Learning about them, making it cozy for the cats - there's really nowhere in here they can't be.
Having a lot of music and books and colors everywhere was really something that I was working toward, and I just really love the junk stores, so I go and buy a bunch of stuff. It scratches the itch, you know?
It's hard for me to understand why people would spend a ridiculous amount of money on stuff. I like to mismatch stuff and make it work. It's not as easy as buying straight from IKEA, but you're not going to find the same stuff in someone else's house. The thrill of the hunt is important to me.
Garrett has a lot of worldly things like instruments and things from his travels, and it definitely goes with my stuff, but it makes it feel more cultured.
