Let’s start the day on a happy note, here’s Obi the smiling pygmy hippo.

It was really cool when I walked up to his enclosure, he was on the other side and the moment he noticed me with my camera, Obi walked right over and stuck his head up and gave me a smile.

My favourite thing about Moo Deng is people saying she is a diva. I'm not saying she's not, but much more than that she is simply a baby hippo. As far as Moo Deng is concerned she is destined to become an unstoppable killing machine. I think she just doesn't know she is a pygmyhippo and can't understand why we are not terrified that she will crush is. It's kind of like when my cat looks at me with destain for picking her up because in her head she is a tiger. She has the soul of an unstoppable juggernaut in the body of an oversized mochi ball with legs and I’m here for it!

I feel like my girl Moo Deng the Pygmy Hippo has not taken off yet over here and I’m trying to rectify that immediately

Thousands of people have made their way to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand to see the two-month-old pygmy hippo eat and play.

But Moo Deng is a member of a vulnerable and elusive species - Choeropsis liberiensis - which is native to West Africa.

And while her fame grows, her relatives in the wild are becoming increasingly rare in their shrinking habitat.

Aside from size, how does the pygmy hippo (Choeropsis liberiensis) differ from the common hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius)?🦛 The pygmy hippo doesn’t spend as much time submerged in water, and it’s not as suited for aquatic life. For one, its feet are not as webbed as those of the common hippo. And unlike its larger relative, its eyes are set to the side, rather than on the top of its head. But don’t let the “pygmy” in its name fool you! This animal can still weigh up to a hefty 600 pounds (270 kilograms). Terancam Punah! Bali Safari Park Kembali Sambut Kelahiran Anakan Babirusa

BALIPORTALNEWS.COM, GIANYAR – Pernah mendengar Babi rusa atau Babirusa? Masih berkerabat dekat dengan babi liar, Babirusa merupakan satwa endemik yang hidup di hutan rimba Sulawesi. Kini, Babirusa masuk ke dalam perencanaan konservasi global (GSMP) karena populasinya semakin menurun. Jumlah mereka diperkirakan hanya tinggal 4.000 ekor di Indonesia diakibatkan fragmentasi habitat dan maraknya perburuan. Hal ini membuat Bali Safari Park terus mengupayakan berbagai usaha konservasi untuk meningkatkan jumlah Babirusa di alam liar. Membuahkan hasil setelah sebelumnya sukses dalam pengembangbiakkan satwa langka Komodo, Bali Safari Park kembali menyambut lahirnya keluarga baru yaitu dua ekor anakan Babirusa. Menurut informasi yang berhasil dihimpun pada Kamis (7/7/2022), pada 30 Mei 2022 kemarin, dua anakan Babirusa ini lahir alami dari indukan bernama Pii dan pejantan bernama Lorenzo. Indukan Babirusa memiliki masa kehamilan selama 150-157 hari. Setiap satu tahun, betina hanya bisa melahirkan satu kali dengan maksimal 2 ekor anakan. Sampai saat ini, dua ekor anakan masih dirawat oleh induknya dengan tetap di pantau oleh keeper dan tim Vet Bali Safari Park. Tim Vet rutin melakukan general checkup, dan memberikan nutrisi seimbang pada indukan agar produksi air susu lancar dan mencukupi kebutuhan anakan. “Kelahiran ini menjadi bukti komitmen kami dalam menerapkan prinsip-prinsip kesejahteraan satwa sehingga kebutuhan satwa terpenuhi secara optimal. Semoga bayi terus sehat dan dapat tumbuh dengan baik,” terang Kurator Bali Safari Park, Ida Ayu Ari Janiawati. Kelahiran satwa langka dan dilindungi ini adalah salah satu bentuk kesuksesan Bali Safari Park sebagai lembaga konservasi satwa di Bali.
