Teacher Appreciation Ideas: Classroom Supplies to Make Learning Fun
Teacher Appreciation Ideas:
Recognizing educators' dedication and impact is crucial for maintaining morale and fostering a positive school environment. There are numerous creative ways to show gratitude to teachers throughout the year, not just during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Personalized gifts often resonate deeply. Consider creating a memory book filled with student messages and artwork, or assembling a care package with the teacher's favorite snacks and self-care items. Gift cards to local coffee shops or bookstores are also thoughtful options.
Collaborative efforts can make a significant impact. Parents might organize a potluck lunch or coordinate to decorate the teacher's classroom door with positive messages. Students could perform a surprise skit or song to express their appreciation.
Practical gestures are always welcome. Volunteering to assist with classroom tasks, organizing supply drives, or offering to cover recess duty can provide much-needed support. Tech-savvy parents might create a digital yearbook or help update the class website.

Sometimes, simple acknowledgments are the most meaningful. Handwritten thank-you notes, public recognition at school events, or social media shout-outs can boost a teacher's spirits. Consider nominating exceptional educators for local awards or featuring their achievements in the school newsletter.
Remember, consistent appreciation throughout the year is more impactful than a single grand gesture. Small, regular acts of kindness and recognition can create a lasting positive atmosphere for both teachers and students.

The puzzle piece has become a widely recognized symbol for autism awareness. It originated in 1963 as the logo for the National Autistic Society in the UK, representing the complexity and mystery of autism spectrum disorders. The puzzle piece's bright colors often symbolize the diversity of individuals with autism and their families.
However, the symbol has become controversial in recent years. While some view it as a positive representation of autism awareness, others argue it implies people with autism are incomplete or need fixing. Many autistic self-advocates prefer alternative symbols, such as the infinity symbol or a rainbow-colored neurodiversity logo.
Despite the debate, the puzzle piece remains a common sight during Autism Awareness Month and on autism-related merchandise.
Autism Awareness Tees are popular clothing items designed to promote understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorders. These t-shirts often feature colorful designs, slogans, or symbols associated with autism awareness, such as puzzle pieces, infinity symbols, or rainbows.

Many shirts display encouraging messages like "Different Not Less" or "Embrace Neurodiversity." Others may include educational facts about autism or aim to dispel common misconceptions. Some tees are created by autistic artists or autism advocacy organizations, with proceeds supporting autism-related causes.
Wearing these shirts can spark conversations, show support for the autism community, and help raise awareness in public spaces. They're particularly popular during Autism Awareness Month in April but are worn year-round by individuals, families, and allies of the autism community.

What you'll find here (refreshed Intro post, 8 October, 2024)
I generally post whatever is on my mind, especially contemplative and/or silly. Disability rights, queer rights, literature and the arts are perennial subjects.
Rest Assured: I will never make a “Reblog, or else you’re a bad person,” or “Reblog, or else bad things will happen.” post.
(Though I may ask for signal boosts, if someone is asking for specific help / advice, and needs to get their message out)
What counts as "Good Manners" around here:
Don't be mean. There's no need to be mean. Remember, wherever you go, there you are.
Praise what you enjoy before criticizing what you don't.
When you do give criticism, let it be reasoned ("It sucks!" isn’t reasoning).
Don't belittle, or mock, people for the things they enjoy (or what they don’t enjoy, either, respect people’s squicks, even if they seem odd to you).
If you must post provocative things, aim for provoking laughter, and provoking thought.
Remember that anger can splash onto innocent bystanders, and people "reading over your shoulder." If you must have an argument with someone in particular--rather than an argument for or against an idea--take it somewhere else (Send a private message or ask to the person)
When in doubt: Puns!
My blocking policy: When I get a notification that I have a new follower, I check, and I will block
Blogs I suspect of being a bot.
Ableists . (Link to the American Wikipedia article on Ableism). This includes anyone who supports for Autism Speaks; I see a blue puzzle piece, I block immediately. I will also block people who repost images, and remove the Image Descriptions.
TERFs, as flagged by the app Shinigami Eyes.
Self-appointed LGBTQ+ Gatekeepers: Those who want to exclude Asexual, Aromantic, and Bi- (or Pan-) folk in M/F relationships, from the Queer Community.
Speaking of the Queer Community: Any user that tags my posts with “q-slur." Since "Queer" is widely accepted through academic consensus, I use it freely. If that word makes you uncomfortable, you would not be happy here.
Any blog (or Anon who sends a message to my Inbox) that discourages voting in United States elections.
And Finally:
With help and suggestions from many others (some of whom wished to remain anonymous) I designed the Disability Pride Flag (Which is different from the Disability Rights Flag of the U.N.). Here is the flag as designed for computer monitors, mobile phones, and other backlit screens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the extent possible under law, Ann Magill has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to Visually Safe Disability Pride Flag. This work is published from: United States.
I also designed a version in fully saturated colors, which I recommend for physical media, such as actual flags, tee-shirts, print materials, etc. (Since physical media is more likely to be viewed at a distance, and atmospheric haze naturally filters bright colors).
I've put the full saturation version behind the cut (But please use the version above for online art):

Image: Five memes made from a photograph of a cheerleader on a field, wearing a blue puzzle piece “autism awareness” t-shirt and a sash that says “ABA therapist”, holding silver pom poms and kicking their leg enthusiastically above their head. The text overlaid reads, “How do I stay in shape? Mental gymnastics,” “I abuse children, yes I do, shut up or I’ll abuse you too,” “Together we can instill lifelong self-hate,” “A-B-A is how we say you could be a person one day,” and “Be aversive, B-E  A-V-E-R-S-I-V-E.” The sixth image is the original photo with no text overlaid.
So I, uh, saw this article about cheerleaders wearing their "day jobs" instead of their uniforms. One of them was an ABA-ist in a blue puzzle piece tee shirt. Seeing as how I have no chill and too much Photoshop...
The last one is the original, in case anyone needs it. For reasons.

Day 3 of Autism Acceptance
To me Autism Acceptance looks like a few different things.
It would be Autism Self Advocacy Network coming up in Google before Autism $peaks.
It would be online resources being as readily available for Autistic adults, as it is for parents of autistic children.
It would mean being able to search for tee shirts, or badge and pins and not having to sift through endless pages of puzzles pieces or "proud autism [insert family relation here]".
It would mean normalizing stimming and identity first language.
It would mean representation in various forms of media. Characters explaining autism to their friends and it not being a Big Deal, characters in Autism Acceptance/Autistic pride tee shirts, characters who shut down stereotypes and educate ableist characters and those ableist characters taking the time to learn and understand and lose that ableism. Characters who show the traumas of ABA and being bullied in school. Characters who "don't look autistic", but are.
On a little more personal level
It would mean not being hesitant to so much as explain that I have sensory problems, much less say the words "I'm Autistic."
It would mean I wouldn't be teased for needing so much alone time.
It would mean people wouldn't think I was "going crazy" because I can here lights buzzing.
It would mean that when my co-worker asked me if I was autistic that I would get nervous and be hesitant in saying that I'm self-diagnosed.
It would mean I'd be able to be gentler to myself, and not question if I'm being dramatic or if I'm really struggling. (I've seen /so/ many posts that if you're questioning whether or not you're faking, that you're even asking that question is good evidence that you're not. But I still question myself.)
It would mean that the teacher I work with wouldn't use how badly I am at faking eye contact as indicator of how well I'm doing that day.
It would mean so many different things, but above all it would mean I could casually reference being autistic in a daily conversation and people wouldn't be shocked by it, I wouldn't have to explain my struggles or how many times I marked off/how much of the diagnostic criteria I've marked off. I could just say it and people would just go along as if I said something about the weather.

In reverse chronological order: 1) attempted to dye my hair with a silver dye. Was hoping for grey tones, but got brown ones instead. Will try again in a few. Also have some silver hair extensions I bought. Going to tell the kids it was their fault I am getting “grey” hair. :) 2) Wore red instead for autism acceptance. Blue, the puzzle piece, and Autism Speaks have a lot of issues with the majority of autistics, so I digress to them over my feelings. 3-4) My bifocals came in, and with the company I ordered them from, I paid way less compared to what I would have paid in any optical store. Well, stateside. Not sure if it would have been comparable going to Juarez. However, these are not good for teaching as I need multifocal progressive lenses, which are more pricey. Will get them far later, a I already have four pairs. Also, wanted to show my unicorn polo. :) 5) Another unicorn tee. 6) My Saint Paddy’s shirt I wore after because we were out on break. :) #gay #latinx #latine #latino #queer #twospirit #genderqueer #gendernonconforming #trans #femme #nonbinary #me #myself #i #glasses #bifocals #rainbows #unicorns #fashion #style #worth #love #stpatricksday #sparkle #autism #autismacceptance #redinstead https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb6O5r3MowE/?utm_medium=tumblr
