§ He notably remembered an experience where he bought a jacket that actually had a certain body odor to it, and it made him think of how human presence could stay on clothing, which led him to come up with the idea of bodily fluids being turned into a dye for the clothes - such as the menstrual blood, or the blood directly taken from the veins, in the movie.

§ Strickland did not see “The Phantom Thread” before making “In Fabric”, he only watched the movie afterward.

§ The depiction of mannequins in the movie is inspired by Strickland’s own childhood experience with mannequins, which creeped him out. He explains that in the 70s the hands of mannequins were more anguler and much harsher than those of modern mannequins, and their fingers were always “long and splayed out as if they were casting a spell on you”. He also mentions how the mannequins always seemed like they were nodding towards you, and every time his mother took him to a store with a pushchair she would park him right under a mannequin - which explains why he sees them as such eery and scary things.

§ The scene of the “menstruating mannequin” was written quite late, and as result they never had time to properly shoot it or completely finish it. The scene shown in the movie is incomplete and lacks a very important element: at the end of the ritual, Mister Lundy is supposed to ejaculate on a dress, which is put on for sale the next morning, and during the night the stain of semen actually turned into a beautiful silver pattern. This would have explained better to the audience the idea of how bodily fluids are used in this shop as clothing dye. Strickland truly regrets the cutting of this scene, but it was asked by the MPAA, because else the movie would have ended up with a much harsher rating. They also asked to cut a part of the scene where Miss Luckmoore is seen licking the menstrual blood off the mannequin. (Which leads Strickland to go on in a rant about how serious, horrific mutilations and gruesome murders are allowed in many horror movies, yet a “chic  menstrual blood licking” is forbidden). 

§ For the poetic language used by Miss Luckmoore, it came from two elements. One, the “flamboyance” the actress Fatma Mohamed had brought to his previous movie’s dialogue (The Duke of Burgundy), and second, his own experience in retail and how the British work-world uses cunningly a very euphemistic language. For example he remembers how, back in the days, when the British tried to advertise a night shift of stacking shelves in a warehouse, they sold it as “twilight replenishment operative”. And even today, when people want to push the age of retirement up to 75, they use the euphemistic hashtag “Age Confidence”. 

§ On the topic above, Strickland admits that he is stretching and exaggerating reality in his movie, to give a playful and satirical element to it, but he explains that the important thing was to “never snap the elastic” and completely cut themselves out of reality. For the shop, he took inspiration from all those “middle-class aspirational” stores his mother went to when he was a child, stores with an “element of fantasy”, and where in changing room you imagined yourself “being invited to canapés at the Swiss embassy”. Those stores where people aspired to elegance, but there was always something slightly off.
