Sapphire is a precious gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum, consisting of aluminium oxide (α-Al2O3) with trace amounts of elements such as iron, titanium, cobalt, lead, chromium, vanadium, magnesium, boron, and silicon. The name sapphire is derived from the Latin word sapphirus, itself from the Greek word sappheiros (σάπφειρος), which referred to lapis lazuli. It is typically blue, but natural "fancy" sapphires also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors; "parti sapphires" show two or more colors. Red corundum stones also occur, but are called rubies rather than sapphires. Pink-colored corundum may be classified either as ruby or sapphire depending on locale. Commonly, natural sapphires are cut and polished into gemstones and worn in jewelry. They also may be created synthetically in laboratories for industrial or decorative purposes in large crystal boules. Because of the remarkable hardness of sapphires – 9 on the Mohs scale (the third hardest mineral, after diamond at 10 and moissanite at 9.5) – sapphires are also used in some non-ornamental applications, such as infrared optical components, high-durability windows, wristwatch crystals and movement bearings, and very thin electronic wafers, which are used as the insulating substrates of special-purpose solid-state electronics such as integrated circuits and GaN-based blue LEDs. Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the gem of the 45th anniversary. A sapphire jubilee occurs after 65 years.

Sapphire is one of the two gem-varieties of corundum, the other being ruby (defined as corundum in a shade of red). Although blue is the best-known sapphire color, they occur in other colors, including gray and black, and also can be colorless. A pinkish orange variety of sapphire is called padparadscha.

Significant sapphire deposits are found in Australia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Cameroon, China (Shandong), Colombia, Ethiopia, India Jammu and Kashmir (Padder, Kishtwar), Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Nigeria, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, United States (Montana) and Vietnam. Sapphire and rubies are often found in the same geographical settings, but they generally have different geological formations. For example, both ruby and sapphire are found in Myanmar's Mogok Stone Tract, but the rubies form in marble, while the sapphire forms in granitic pegmatites or corundum syenites.

Every sapphire mine produces a wide range of quality, and origin is not a guarantee of quality. For sapphire, Jammu and Kashmir receives the highest premium, although Burma, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar also produce large quantities of fine quality gems.

The cost of natural sapphires varies depending on their color, clarity, size, cut, and overall quality. Sapphires that are completely untreated are worth far more than those that have been treated. Geographical origin also has a major impact on price. For most gems of one carat or more, an independent report from a respected laboratory such as GIA, Lotus Gemology, or SSEF, is often required by buyers before they will make a purchase.

Instead of working on my actual au I've been working on designs for my diamond swap au. Here is the reforms of both Purple and White Diamond.

During her second reform, Purple was mostly pregnant with Sophia (not calling her Sophie for this au to be able to tell them apart lol) so I decided to draw her with a bit of a belly to show her being a bit pregnant. The third reform of Purple is just Sophia because Purple and White didn't really reform or change their forms all that much. Plus, Sophia is technically the current form of Purple (who still goes by Amy in this au since her and White take on the forms of an amethyst and moissanite because it's easier for them as I've stated before) so it makes sense to have Sophia as Purple's third reform. Even though Purple is gone and all that is left is Sophia.

I know I referred to Sophia as Sophie in the last post I made of this au, but I decided to start calling her purely Sophia just to separate the two aus. Not like I could really mistake one for the other, but I thought it'd just be easier. Especially if people start asking questions about this au, which started off as a joke, but now I'm really enjoying making art for it lol.

Red Diamond + Garnet = taaffeite, with a hamxe or a trench knife as a weapon Red Diamond + Ruby = painite, with a smaller trench knife/hamaxe as a weapon considering Ruby just uses one gauntlet whereas Garnet uses two cjkJDSJK Red Diamond + Sapphire = charoite, with the axe as a weapon considering Sapphire canonically has none/doesn't use it if she does have one Red Diamond + Amethyst = lepidolite, with one of those segmented-whip swords as a weapon Red Diamond + Pearl = (purple?) moissanite, with... maybe a lance as a weapon? Red Diamond + Steven = I mean I suppose they'd just be like... magenta diamond?? Reddish-pink diamond?? But if we want a non-diamond perhaps rubellite? Their weapon would most likely just be using the shield + axe at the same time, but I think someting akin to a circular saw could work otherwise?

It's a beautifully carved rosewood boxed, varnished to a shine. Inside, resting on a cushion of red velvet is a red spider lily flower, but made entirely out of a clear, multicolored crystal. The base color is white but many others shine through: aqua, blue, purple, pink, orange. Like an opal and a moissanite. It picks up even the most minuscule amount of light, reflecting and refracting it.

Massive hands held the delicate construction. There were no notes or indications on who had sent it. Solana set it back in the box after several long minutes of holding the crystal flower.

She placed it carefully on a shelf with the lid open so she could look upon it whenever she turned her face in that direction. "well, I'm grateful, whoever you are mysterious gift giver."

just gonna take this chance to yell a little bit about moissanite (mwah-sa-nite), possibly the sparkliest gems on earth

it does occur naturally BUT due to extreme rarity moissanite gems these days are all lab created, and WOW it's so pretty; it's more refractive than diamonds, too, like cmon look at this

it's also more durable than diamonds, and almost as hard. in normal light, these colorless gems also look visually similar, except that moissanite has more ✨ glitter ✨

all the clarity, more of the fire and sparkle, and none of the child labor -- at a fraction of the cost of a diamond!! she just keeps winning!!!

AND THEN, IF YOU LIKE MORE COLOR: "fancy" colored moissanite is available in purple and blue and yellow and red and green and basically anything you want; the color is also permanent (as long as you're not exposing the gem to temps in excess of 1020° F, which, um, you probably won't lol) REALLY JUST LOOK AT THESE

I have been playing around with the idea of a Diamond Swap AU with Purple and White Diamond. So I made a screenshot redraw with Sophie (who's the daughter of Greg in this au) and Conner (who is the twin brother of Connie and is sort of the Steven of this au). I actually have put a good bit of thought into this au, but don't worry I'm still working on my main au.

Just some random bits of info for this au:

Purple and White are the smallest diamonds. They both rebel after receiving Earth as their first colony (they share it and White only rebelled because Purple wanted to protect the Earth and its creatures). They don't fake their own shattering because White suggested it would be more of a meaningful rebellion if all gems knew that two of the leaders of Homeworld is fighting against the others (basically them showing that not all of the diamonds agree with the Diamond Authority). White is similar to canon!Pearl in this au, at least with the relationship Pearl had with Rose/Pink. Volleyball and Pearl swap places in this au and Purple still has her own pearl. The Crystal Gems consist of Purple (who later takes on the form of an Amethyst after the war because it's easier to get around), White (who later takes on the form of a Moissanite after the war because it's easier to get around), Aubie (Purple's pearl), Penny (Pink Pearl, White's pearl), Garnet (a fusion between a ruby and a padparadscha) and Carnelian. Purple and Greg get together and have Sophie (which Purple was ecstatic about because she would be creating something entirely new). Connie has a twin brother named Conner and both end up best friends with Sophie.

Then it pretty much follows canon/hj. Actually that's all I've thought about. I do have outfit designs for the diamonds and the pearls. I'm planning on drawing Purple and White in their different forms because I just love the idea of designing outfits for the different reforms.
