Gen Z, Millennial, Zillennial? Find Your Generation — And What It Means — By Year
— By Stephen J. Beard and Veronica Bravo | October 08, 2024
Generation breakdown Veronica Bravo, Getty Images
Where Were You When The Space Shuttle Challenger Exploded?
The answer to that question is just one example of how generations identify with a shared experience. Baby boomers may have watched from a break room at the office or heard about it on the radio. Many Generation X kids sat in a classroom and watched live on television as the first space-bound teacher, 36-year-old Christa McAuliffe, perished with six fellow astronauts. The earliest millennials may have witnessed this moment, too, but would probably be too young to remember.
Then there's the rest of us − the roughly 44% of Americans living today (and growing) − who were born after the disaster in January 1986 and did not share the impact it had on the country.
Finding Balance:Millennials, Gen Z are 'Spiraling,' Partying Hard and Blowing Their Savings. Why?
And that's how shared generational experiences work. Identifying with a generation becomes a shorthand for references to shared common cultural experiences, advances in technology and behaviors forged by witnessing collective significant historical events. Generational identity also informs policy-making, particularly around marketing, health care and retirement.
An ESRI analysis of the predominant generation by location in the country shows a higher concentration of millennials in larger urban areas like Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles, while baby boomers make up the largest generational subset in vast swaths of rural areas.
Years When Each Generation Was Born
While pigeonholing someone to a particular generation based solely on birth year isn't a perfect way to determine that person's identity, it helps policymakers establish a baseline for where that person is the age range. Here are the widely accepted year ranges that define today's generations:
Another example of a generational cultural touchstone is the way we consume music. From the early days of vinyl records and radio to cassettes and CDs to streaming services and social media platforms, music listening formats are nearly baked in to each generation's formative years.
In 2023, millennials maintained their place as the largest segment of the U.S. population, a trend that began in 2019 when they surpassed baby boomers because of aging.
Generations and Race in The US
Grouping generational identities by race and ethnicity helps paint a broad picture of how U.S. demographics are changing. In 2023, Gen Alpha was the most racially and ethnically diverse generation, with whites making up less than half of the population of people born in the Gen Alpha birth years (2013 to present).
How Generational Identity Affects Retirement Outlooks
Though age, as the saying goes, is just a number, categorizing people by age can help researchers frame discussions around important age-specific issues like retirement. According to a report in June by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, nearly half of all workers across four generations from baby boomers to Gen Z either plan to retire past age 65 or not retire at all.
But the confidence in retiring at or before age 65 drops sharply with age: 63% of Gen Z respondents are confident in retiring by 65 versus only 48% of Gen X with similar plans.

I watch Youtube on my PS4, so I can watch videos on the big screen, and not hunch over my laptop and hurt my back. No-adblock Youtube is up to 40 seconds of unskippable advertisments, every 15 minutes or so. This started today for me. I don't like watching videos on my laptop, certainly not long form and documentary-like videos like Hbomberguy's content, but Youtube is becoming so genuinely unwatchable without an adblocker.
#my gospel#and its also important for me to be able to skip or get around ads bc some ads on youtube are triggering for me#purdue global ads that use manipulative language in order to get you to attend college is triggering for me#food ads where ppl are eating and crunching and have close ups of this are triggering to me#this just. is not okay?????#what happens when i. a person who was abused by their mother. has to watch 40 unskippable secs of mothers day ads?

Concerns are growing about the social and political impacts of deepfakes and generative AI, leading many to consider the risks during a global election year. Deepfakes, generative AI, and synthetic content are also receiving policy attention in the form of Biden’s Executive Order on AI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s AI Safety Institute Consortium. This growing attention has resulted in decisions such as the Federal Communication Commission’s ban on AI-generated voices in robocalls and an agreement amongst Big Tech companies to label and limit, although not ban, AI-generated content on their platforms.
As researchers and as directors of the Governance and Responsible AI Lab (GRAIL) at Purdue University, we have followed these developments closely but are also concerned about more extensive indirect impacts of AI-generated content on individuals’ trust and belief in the broader informational and political environment. We have studied whether an environment of increasing AI-generated media content and misinformation might enable politicians and other public figures to successfully spread misinformation about misinformation, or to credibly “cry wolf” over fake news. Such claims could provide a benefit, or a “liar’s dividend,” at the expense of accountability and public trust in institutions such as the government and media.

Brian Bourquard’s Path to Operational Excellence : From Robotics to Manufacturing Excellence
When Brian Bourquard was first exposed to the world of robotics and technology, no one probably anticipated just how much reach in various industries he would eventually garner. Nowadays, being a professional who started by helping organizations to reinvent themselves and is currently running a successful technology and manufacturing company in California paints the picture of how he is able to inspire transformation. But how did he reach this acme of success? The answer to this question is in his discipline concerning strategy, innovation, and uncompromising operational excellence.
A Visionary in Strategy and Finance
The turning point in Brian’s life came with the position of Vice President of Strategy and Finance at Verdant Robotics. In this position, he generated close to thirty million in series A funding, amongst other financial and strategic advancements. This need, however, not only catered to the expansion plan but also ensured that the company was market-ready. It is easy to observe from this success story that he is the leader needed when there are plans to take innovative companies to the next level.
To begin with, this is not to say that he has only experience in robotics. Brian’s strategic skills have been utilized even in such areas as consumer goods, food and agribusiness, and manufacturing. While working at EY-Parthenon as a senior director, he handled activities with one of the Fortune 500 companies, providing strategy, product and asset expansion, and venture solutions. He played a critical role in introducing sustainable and cost-effective products to the global marketplace.
For a deeper dive into his approach, check out “Brian Bourquard: Leveraging Applied Economics for Business Growth-A PhD’s Perspective on Market Strategy” for insights into how he melds his academic background with real-world applications.
From Academia to Industry Leadership
A defining feature of Brian Bourquard’s career is his ability to blend rigorous academic knowledge with practical business strategies. His PhD in Applied Economics from Purdue University gave him the analytical tools needed to approach complex economic problems, a skill set he would later apply in various executive roles. Teaching executive education and MBA students at Purdue refined his understanding of business challenges. At the same time, his MS in Management from the prestigious Grenoble Ecole de Management in France provided a global perspective on market dynamics.
Building Teams, Building Success
Brian is guided by the underlying principle that great teams build great organizations, irrespective of which organizations are in place. Be it a VC-funded start-up or a well-established corporation, Brian has always worked at creating and promoting cultures that inspire and encourage creativity and teamwork.
If you wish to discover more about his financial understanding, you can explore “Brian Bourquard - The Financial Vision of Brian Bourquard: Expertise and Strategic Excellence in Action,” which covers his deep experience in managing complex financial ecosystems.
What’s Next for Brian Bourquard?
The last particular question at this moment is, when and how will Brian Bourquard seek operational excellence again across the borders of the manufacturing industry? Looking at his vast experience in building strategies, funding and nurturing organizations and relationships, one thing is certain. And that is influence on the industries he touches is far from over.

Ultrasound technology accelerates drying of renewable cellulose nanocrystals
The global transition towards sustainability has sparked significant interest in bio-based materials and energy-efficient technologies. Among these, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), derived from renewable resources, have shown great potential for use in composites, biomedical materials, and packaging. However, a major challenge in CNC production is the energy-intensive drying process, which often requires removing large amounts of water from low-concentration suspensions. To address this issue, a team of researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Purdue University has introduced a novel multi-frequency ultrasonic drying technology. This method not only accelerates the drying process but also reduces energy consumption compared to traditional drying techniques such as hot air, spray, and freeze drying. The research is published in the Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts.

Smoke and Ashes: Opium's Hidden Histories
"Smoke and Ashes: Opium’s Hidden Histories" is a sweeping and jarring work of how opium became an insidious capitalistic tool to generate wealth for the British Empire and other Western powers at the expense of an epidemic of addiction in China and the impoverishment of millions of farmers in India. The legacy of this “criminal enterprise,” as the author puts it, left lasting influences that reverberate across cultures and societies even today.
Written in engaging language, Smoke and Ashes is a scholarly follow-up to the author’s famous Ibis trilogy, a collection of fiction that uses the opium trade as its backdrop. In Smoke and Ashes, the author draws on his years-long research into opium supplemented by his family history, personal travels, cross-cultural experience, and expertise in works of historical verisimilitude. Composed over 18 chapters, the author delves into a diverse set of primary and secondary data, including Chinese sources. He also brings a multidimensional angle to the study by highlighting the opium trade's legacy in diverse areas such as art, architecture, horticulture, printmaking, and calligraphy. 23 pictorial illustrations serve as powerful eyewitness accounts to the discourse.
This book should interest students and scholars seeking historical analysis based on facts on the ground instead of colonial narratives. Readers will also find answers to how opium continues to play an outsize role in modern-day conflicts, addictions, corporate behavior, and globalism.
Amitav Ghosh’s research convincingly points out that while opium had always been used for recreational purposes across cultures, it was the Western powers such as the British, Portuguese, the Spaniards, and the Dutch that discovered its significant potential as a trading vehicle. Ghosh adds that colonial rulers, especially the British, often rationalized their actions by arguing that the Asian population was naturally predisposed to narcotics. However, it was British India that bested others in virtually monopolizing the market for the highly addictive Indian opium in China. Used as a currency to redress the East India Company (EIC)’s trade deficit with China, the opium trade by the 1890s generated about five million sterling a year for Britain. Meanwhile, as many as 40 million Chinese became addicted to opium.
Eastern India became the epicenter of British opium production. Workers in opium factories in Patna and Benares toiled under severe conditions, often earning less than the cost of production while their British managers lived in luxury. Ghosh asserts that opium farming permanently impoverished a region that was an economic powerhouse before the British arrived. Ghosh’s work echoes developmental economists such as Jonathan Lehne, who has documented opium-growing communities' lower literacy and economic progress compared to their neighbors.
Ghosh states that after Britain, “the country that benefited most from the opium trade” with China, was the United States. American traders skirted the British opium monopoly by sourcing from Turkey and Malwa in Western India. By 1818, American traders were smuggling about one-third of all the opium consumed in China. Many powerful families like the Astors, Coolidges, Forbes, Irvings, and Roosevelts built their fortunes from the opium trade. Much of this opium money, Ghosh shows, also financed banking, railroads, and Ivy League institutions. While Ghosh mentions that many of these families developed a huge collection of Chinese art, he could have also discussed that some of their holdings were most probably part of millions of Chinese cultural icons plundered by colonialists.
Ghosh ends the book by discussing how the EIC's predatory behaviors have been replicated by modern corporations, like Purdue Pharma, that are responsible for the opium-derived OxyContin addiction. He adds that fossil fuel companies such as BP have also reaped enormous profits at the expense of consumer health or environmental damage.
Perhaps one omission in this book is that the author does not hold Indian opium traders from Malwa, such as the Marwaris, Parsis, and Jews, under the same ethical scrutiny as he does to the British and the Americans. While various other works have covered the British Empire's involvement in the opium trade, most readers would find Ghosh's narrative of American involvement to be eye-opening. Likewise, his linkage of present-day eastern India's economic backwardness to opium is both revealing and insightful.
Winner of India's highest literary award Jnanpith and nominated author for the Man Booker Prize, Amitav Ghosh's works concern colonialism, identity, migration, environmentalism, and climate change. In this book, he provides an invaluable lesson for political and business leaders that abdication of ethics and social responsibility have lasting consequences impacting us all.

Consulting firm McKinsey & Co has agreed to pay $78 million to resolve claims by U.S. health insurers and benefit plans that it fueled an epidemic of opioid addiction through its work for drug companies including OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma. The settlement was disclosed in papers filed on Friday in federal court in San Francisco. It marked the last in a series of settlements McKinsey has reached resolving lawsuits over the U.S. opioid epidemic. Plaintiffs accused McKinsey, one of the leading global consulting firms, of contributing to the deadly drug crisis by helping drug manufacturers including Purdue Pharma design deceptive marketing plans and boost sales of painkillers. McKinsey previously paid $641.5 million to resolve claims by state attorneys general and another $230 million to resolve claims by local governments. It has also settled cases by Native American tribes. Friday’s class action settlement, which requires a judge’s approval, resolves claims by so-called third-party payers like insurers that provide health and welfare benefits.

According to one professor, we can stop global warming if we used a new super white paint.
The problem though, is we would need to cover at least 1% of the earth's surface with the paint.
That won't be easy, especially with all that water everywhere.
I hope Purdue University is ready for this incoming order.
In 2021, researchers at Purdue University announced that they had developed the whitest paint on Earth. The color is so white that it can reflect over 98% of light. This is particularly useful because light generates heat — and we here on Earth are running a bit hot these days.
If used on a building, the researchers say, the paint would reduce the temperature on the surface, lowering the temps inside and decreasing the need for air conditioning. But what if there was an even bigger application, like reducing the temperature of the entire planet?
According to Jeremy Munday, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Davis, who researches clean technology, if a material like Purdue's paint covered 1-2% of the Earth's surface, the amount of light being bounced back into space would reduce the amount of heat being absorbed by the planet enough to stabilize global temperatures. In other words, it could do a lot to solve climate change. Plus, Munday told the New York Times, the amount of light being bounced back into space wouldn't harm the cosmos very much. "It'd be like pouring a cup of regular water into the ocean," he told the Times.

Writer’s block revisited
Of all the tools and techniques I employ as a writer, it is the one I use the most. When I experience writer's block, I take a walk.
I did it just this morning. Faced with solving a plot hole in Annie's Apple, my current work in progress, I took a walk, cleared my mind, and came up with a fix. I did what I couldn't do sitting still.
Others favor different approaches. As I noted in a blog post eight years ago, the web is full of suggestions. Purdue University Global offers seven, including some that are rooted in common sense. Like other online sources, it urges writers to declutter their workspaces, develop good habits, and write in manageable chunks.
More advice can be found at SmartBlogger, The Writer, Writer's Digest, Writers.com, Inc. Magazine, and other sites. SmartBlogger encourages writers to "talk to an imaginary friend," "curse like a sailor," "chug some caffeine," "browse your photo albums," and "wash the dishes." (My wife would like the last suggestion.)
I still prefer walking. When I am out and about, I can focus, solve problems, and sometimes create. I can do the things I often cannot do while staring at a blank page on a computer screen.
More often than not, I will think of more ideas and remedies than I can track in my mind. Even on a walk of fifteen to twenty minutes, I will resort to taking notes on my phone or on a small notepad.
Most writers, of course, know all about the importance of taking notes. They know that inspiration does not always strike at convenient times or places. They become proficient at recording even minor and seemingly unimportant details for future use.
So the next time the words don't come, take a walk with a notepad. Get outdoors and away from household distractions. You may find that writer's block is little more than a temporary affliction.

Researchers build transparent conductors without expensive rare-earth indium
Purdue University researchers have created transparent organic conductors from patent-pending polymers that achieve the same results and properties as traditional conductors made from rare-earth minerals but are less expensive and can be created from more plentiful reserves.
Transparent conductors are critical components in light-emitting diodes, touch screens, solar cells and other optoelectronic devices. Indium tin oxide (ITO) is used in more than 95% of global transparent conductors. It conducts electric current through a device, which is disrupted when a person swipes or taps a touch screen.
Jianguo Mei, the Richard and Judith Wien Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, said touch screens are made of several layers, including a top layer of glass or plastic, a conductive layer beneath it, and a circuit board that reads the signals sent by the conductive layer.
"When a user touches the screen, their finger creates a disruption in the electrical field generated by the conductive layer," Mei said. "This disruption is detected by the circuit board, which can then determine the location of the touch and interpret it as a command, such as opening an app or typing a message."
