Today In History
Barack Obama the 44th president of the United States and the first African American commander-in-chief. He served two terms, in 2008 and 2012.
The son of parents from Kenya and Kansas, Obama was born August 4, 1961 in Hawaii.
Obama attended Punahou Academy, where he excelled in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. As one of only three Black students at the school, he became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African American.
He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. After serving on the Illinois State Senate, he was elected a U.S. senator representing Illinois in 2004. He and wife Michelle Obama have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
In February 2007, Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
On November 4, 2008, Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain, 52.9 percent to 45.7 percent, to win election as the 44th president of the United States—and the first African American to hold this office.

Purusha Sukhtam - Rig Veda (Hymn 10.90)
सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्। स भूमि विश्वतो वृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङुलम् ।।१।। Sahasra-şīrssā Purussah Sahasra-ākssah Sahasra-Pāt | Sa Bhūmim Viśvato Vrtva-ātya[i]-țisstthad-daśa-āngulam ||1||
The Purusha (universal being) has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet. Thousand signifies innumerable which points to the omnipresence of the universal being. He envelops the world from all sides i.e. he pervades each part of the creation and extends beyond in the ten directions represented by ten fingers.
---
पुरुष एवेदं सवें यद्भूतं यच्च भव्यम् । उतामृतत्वस्येशानो यदन्नेनातिरोहति ॥२॥
Purussa ěvedam Sarvam yad-Bhūtam yacca Bhavyam | ūta-āmrtatvasye[a-ī]śāno yad-ānnena-āti-rohati ||2||
The Purusha is indeed all this (creation) in essence; that which existed in the past, and that which will exist in the future, everything i.e the whole creation is woven by the immortal essence of the great lord (Purusha); by becoming food of which (i.e. by getting consumed in whose immortal essence through surrender) one transcends the gross world and becomes immortal.
---
एतावानस्य महिमातो ज्यायाँश्च पूरुषः । पादोऽस्य विश्वा भूतानि त्रिपादस्यामृतं दिवि ॥३॥
ětāvānasya mahima-āto Jyāyāś-Ca Pūrussah | Pādo-āsya Viśvā Bhūtāni țri-Pād-āsya-āmrtam divi ||3||
The Purusha is greater than all the greatness which can be expressed by words. His one part has become all these (visible) worlds, and his three parts rest in the immortal world of the transcendence.
---
त्रिपादूर्ध्व उदैत्पूरुषः पादोऽस्येहाभवत्पुनः । ततो विष्वङ् व्यक्रामत्साशनानशने अभि ॥४।।
țri-Pād-ūurdhva ūdait-Pūrussah Pādo-āsye[a-ī]ha-ābhavat-Punah | țato Vissvang Vya[i-ā]krāmat-Sāśana-ānaśane ābhi ||4||
The three parts of the Purusha is high above (in the transcendental realm), and his one part becomes the creation again and again. There, in the creation, he pervades all the living (who eats) and the non-living ( who does not eat ) beings.
---
तस्माद्विराळजायत विराजो अधि पूरुषः । स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्भूमिमथो पुरः ॥५॥ țasmād-Virādda-Jāyata Virājo ādhi Pūrussah | Sa Jāto ātya[i-ā]ricyata Paścād-Bhūmim-ātho Purah ||5||
From purusha was born the virat; (the virat came into being) from the presence of the shining purusha (who remained as the background or substratum of virat); he (i.e. the virat) created the earth, by manifesting her from his own being as substratum.
---
यत्पुरुषेण हविषा देवा यज्ञमतन्वत। वसन्तो अस्यासीदाज्यं ग्रीष्म इध्मः शरद्दविः ॥६॥
yat-Purussenna ḥavissā devā yajnyam-ātanvata | Vasanto āsya-āsīda-ājyam ģrīssma īdhmah șarad-[d]ḥavih ||6||
With the purusha as the (sacrificial) fire, the deva (the shining one, referring to virat) continued the yagna (sacrifice of creation), spring was (created as) the clarified butter (of that yagna), summer was (created as) the fuel (of that yagna), and autumn was (created as) the havis (sacrificial offering of that yagna).
---
तं यजञं बर्हिषि प्रौक्षन्पुरुषं जातमग्रतः । तेन देवा अयजन्त साध्या ऋषयश्च ये ॥७॥
țam yajnyam Barhissi Pra-ūkssan-Purussam Jātam-āgratah | țena devā āyajanta Sādhyā rssayaś-Ca ye ||7||
The first divine men were created as the holy water sprinkled with the kusa grass in that yagna (sacrifice of creation). the first divine men were the sadhya devas and the rishis, who were created by him, the deva (the shining one, referring to virat), who performed the yagna. These rishis were not human but divine rishis like saptarshis created directly by virat.
---
तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुतः सम्भृतं पृषदाज्यम् । पशून्ताँश्चके वायव्यानारण्यान् ग्राम्याश्च ये ॥८॥
țasmād-yajnyāt-Sarvahutah Sambhrtam Prssadājyam | Paśūn-țāścakre Vāyavyān-āarannyān grāmyāś-Ca ye ||8||
From the complete offering of his (i.e. virat's) yagna (sacrifice of creation) was obtained ghee mixed with coagulated milk, which (i.e. the ghee and milk) are (the created) animals, both of air (birds) and of forests (wild animals) and villages (domestic animals).
---
तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुत ऋचः सामानि जज्ञिरे। छन्दांसि जज्ञिरे तस्माद्यजुस्तस्मादजायत ॥९॥ țasmād-yajnyāt-Sarvahuta rcah Sāmāni Jajnyire | chandāmsi Jajnyire țasmād-yajus-țasmād-ājāyata ||9||
From the complete offering of his (i.e. virat's) yagna (sacrifice of creation) was born the rig veda and sama veda, the chandas (vedic meters) were born from him, and the yajur veda was born from him.
---
तस्माद्श्वा अजायन्त ये के चोभयादतः । गावोः ह जज्ञिरे तस्मात् तस्माज्जाता अजावयः ॥१ ॥
țasmād-āśvā ājāyanta ye khe Co[a-ū]bhayādatah | ģāvoh ḥa Jajnyire țasmāt țasmāj-Jātā ājā-Vayah ||10||
From him (i.e. virat) was born the horses, and all those animals who has teeth in both jaws, from him (i.e. virat) was born the cows, and from him was born all types of goats.
---
यत्पुरुषं व्यदधुः कतिधा व्यकल्पयन्। मुखं किमस्य कौ बाहू का ऊरू पादा उच्येते ॥११॥
yat-Purussam Vya[i-ā]dadhuh khatidhā Vya[i-ā]kalpayan | mukham khimasya khau Bāhū khā ūurū Pada ūcyete ||11||
What did the purusha (i.e. virat) hold within him? How many parts were assigned in his huge form? What was his mouth? What was his arms? What was his thighs? And what was his feet?
---
ब्राह्मणोऽस्य मुखमासीद् बाहू राजन्यः कृतः । ऊरू तदस्य यद्वैश्यः पच्द्ां शूद्रो अजायत ॥१२॥
Brāhmanno-āsya mukham-āasīd Bāhū rājanyah khrtah | ūurū țad-āsya yad-Vaiśyah Padbhyām șūdro ājāyata ||12||
The Brahmanas were his mouth, the kshatriyas became his arms, the vaishyas were his thighs, and the shudras were assigned to his feet.
---
चन्द्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत । मुखादिन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च प्राणाद्वायुरजायत ॥१३॥
Candramā ņanaso Jātaś-Cakssoh Sūryo ājāyata | mukhād-īndraś-Ca-āgniś-Ca Prānnād-Vāyur-ājāyata ||13||
The moon was born from his mind and the sun was born from his eyes, Indra and agni (fire) were born from his mouth, and vayu (wind) was born from his breath.
---
नाभ्या आसीदन्तरिक्षं शीर्ष्णो द्यौः समवर्तत। पच्ां भूमिर्दिशः श्रोत्रात्तथा लोकाँ अकल्पयन् ॥१४।। ņābhyā āasīd-āntarikssam şīrssnno dyauh Samavartata | Padbhyām Bhūmir-diśah șrotrāt-țathā ļokā ākalpayan ||14||
His navel became the antariksha (the intermediate space between heaven and earth), his head sustained the heaven, from his feet the earth (was sustained), and from his ears the directions (were sustained); in this manner all the worlds were regulated by him.
---
सप्तास्यासन् परिधयस्त्रिः सप्त समिधः कृताः । देवा यद्यज्ञं तन्वाना अबन्नन्पुरुषं पशुम् ॥१५।।
Saptāsya[i-ā]asan Paridhayas-trih Sapta Samidhah khrtāh | devā yadyajnyam țanvānā ābadhnan-Purussam Paśum ||15||
By making seven enclosures with three times seven sacrificial firewood, the deva (the shining one referring to virat) in that yagna (sacrifice of creation), bound the infinite expanse of the purusha as (apparently) finite living beings (pashu).
--- यज्ञेन यज्ञमयजन्त देवास्तानि धर्माणि प्रथमान्यासन्। ते ह नाकं महिमानः सचन्त यत्र पूर्वे ाध्याः सन्ति देवाः ॥१६॥
yajnyena yajnyam-āyajanta ḍevās-ṭāni ḍharmānni Prathamānya[i-ā]asan | țe ḥa ņākam mahimānah Sa-Canta yatra Pūrve Sādhyāh Santi devāh ||16||
The devas performed the external yagna by meditating on the real yagna (i.e. contemplating on the purusha who is shining behind everything); and thus they first obtained the dharma (based on the oneness of the purusha), by meditating on the greatness of the chidakasha (blissful spiritual sky behind everyone, which is the essence of the purusha), during those earlier times, the spiritual aspirants became the shining one themselves. From Hawaii to the White House: The Life and Legacy of Barack Obama
Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was from Kansas, while his father, Barack Obama Sr., hailed from Kenya. Obama's parents separated when he was still young, and he was raised primarily by his mother and her parents. He graduated from Punahou School, a prestigious prep academy in Honolulu, before attending Occidental College in Los Angeles, and later transferring to Columbia University in New York City, where he earned his bachelor's degree in political science.
In 1988, Obama enrolled in Harvard Law School, where he was elected the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. This achievement garnered national attention and led to a book contract and a role as a community organizer in Chicago. After graduating from law school, he taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School while also working as a civil rights lawyer. He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004, demonstrating a talent for building coalitions and working across the aisle.
In 2004, Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate, representing Illinois. His speech at the Democratic National Convention that year brought him into the national spotlight. He ran for the presidency in 2008, and after a hard-fought campaign, he won the election, becoming the first African American president of the United States. Obama served two terms as president, from 2009 to 2017. During his tenure, he oversaw the passage of significant legislation including the Affordable Care Act, often known as "Obamacare," and led efforts towards economic recovery following the 2008 financial crisis. After leaving office, he has continued to be involved in a variety of projects, including the Obama Foundation and his production company, Higher Ground Productions.

Next Hawaii Superstar?
With stars like Tua Tagoviloa, Marcus Mariota, and Manti Te’o, who will be the next stud to represent the 808?
Tumblr media
Taulia Tagovailoa, Class of 2019, Thompson High School of Alabama / Kapolei High School (University of Alabama)
Living in the lights of his older brother Tua, Taulia shows no fear in taking his brothers place once he leaves Alabama. Taulia isn’t as big as Tua, but however more athletic than his older brother. he shows more mobility to move outside the pocket and extend plays with his feet, to follow up with amazing arm strength, Taulia has the makings of being that next man up for Alabama, and here’s why.
Tumblr media
During his time at Thompson High School, he thrown for nearly 3700 yards, five interceptions, and 35 touchdowns all-year. Clearly, those numbers tell you that he can get the job done when it comes to moving the ball down-field. Even with being a little under-sized at the quarterback position, he has all the tools into becoming the next-generation quarterback out of Hawaii to mesmerize all of football.
Tumblr media
Dillon Gabriel, Class of 2019, Millilani High School (University of Central Florida)
Surprised? So Am I! Dillon Gabriel has shown the college football world why he should be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He has not only lead UCF to the second-best offense in all of college football, but has UCF ranked 13 in all total offense in his first year as a starter.
youtube
He is in the top 15 in all quarterback ratings, and did I mention he is a true-freshman? How about also putting up 347 yards against a Stanford defense that is supposed to be one of the best in the Pac-12 this year. When you watch Gabriel connect with his receivers, it’s almost like every throw is on the money. He has great understanding of where to throw in any coverage thrown at him, and knows how to manage the clock.
youtube
UCF’s offense kind of reminds me of the old Oregon Ducks offense back when Marcus Mariota was the starting quarterback. Too have that kind of command on an offense that is built to score in less than 2 minutes, there is no room for mistakes. Do not be surprised if Gabriel takes UCF to another New Years Six Bowl this season.
Tumblr media
Jordan Botelho, Class of 2020, Saint Louis School in Hawaii (Committed to Notre Dame 4/18/19)
The best defensive linebacker to come out of Hawaii since Manti Teo in 2009, and here’s why. 95 rating on 24/7 sports (sixth best in all linebackers in the country), weighs 230 pounds, standing about 6 foot 2 inches. He is built to become a potential defensive standout once he enters college.
Tumblr media
Watching him live against Bishop Gorman, he was calling out defensive audibles to his teammates, he showed tremendous awareness on the field, and more importantly, he made it look easy. Jordan lead the team in tackles with 4, and also a couple plays where he broken up short passes towards the sidelines. He was the big reason why Bishop Gorman only scored one touchdown in the first half. Whether it be just to break up a pass, or outside pressure to the quarterback, he can do it all. Which is why he is on my watch list for the next upcoming college football season.
Tumblr media
Faatui Tuitele, Class of 2019, Saint Louis School of Hawaii (University of Washington)
Hawaii high school football players have recently been getting attention thanks to the lights of Tua, Gabriel, Milton, and many others. But since this past couple of years, it’s actually the defensive players that have been getting the attention of these big name schools to come down and recruit them.
Tumblr media
Tuitele, according to his scouting reports all highlighted the word “Legit,” as saying he is the real deal.
youtube
In his games at Saint Louis, no other offensive lineman in the State of Hawaii could contain this guy. Double team him all you want, and he will still find a way to come with a sack. Ranked 83rd in the country coming out of high school, and ninth in his position, a lot of schools including Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and Ole Miss wanted this guy to play for them. When watching some of his highlights against teams like Punahou and Kahuku, he would easily run over 300-pound lineman to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Tumblr media
Scouts say he is like a younger Justin Jones. Very physical upfront, has the size and strength to shed off blockers and finish tackles in the gaps for loss, and has great footwork on the inside to create lots of room for linebackers to get at the quarterback. I wouldn’t be surprised, with the talent and size he bring to the table, Tuitele gets his degree, and enters the NFL Draft sometime around 2022.

Heroism and Devotion:  Medal of Honor Recipient Francis B. Wai
“It is not sweet to die for one’s country. It is bitter. But it can be noble.”  --  Noel Annan
Given what by then had been a bitter, 60-year legacy of racial exclusion from the US, the military draft of the first true, native-born generation of Chinese Americans represented the final, cruel chapter of racial injustice perpetrated against the Chinese in the US.
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, coupled with cruel anti-miscegenation laws, assured that the American legal system produced a Chinese American population that disproportionately reflected a male, single, and childless population and, hence, a prime demographic for military service. How better to accomplish the legislative scheme that had been calculated to extinguish the Chinese presence in the US once and for all than to place Chinese America's men in harm’s way?  The onset of the Second World War presented the very real prospect that the genocidal dreams of Denis Kearney’s 19th century sandlot agitators would become reality.
According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and researchers at the Oakland Museum, 13,499 Chinese American men fought in the armed forces. (Community estimates range as high as 20,000.) Approximately 75 percent served in the US Army, with ground units such as the 3rd and 4th Infantry Divisions in Europe and the 6th, 32nd and 77th Infantry Divisions in the Pacific. 25 percent of the total Chinese Americans under arms served in the Navy. Still others served in specialized units, such as the all-Chinese American 1157th Signal Corps, part of 14th Air Service Group that would join the fight against Imperial Japan in the CBI theatre of operations.
Counted together, those who served in the armed forces during WW II represented 20 percent of all Chinese American men in the continental U.S. In the words of historian Iris Chang, "ethnic Chinese men gave their lives disproportionate to their presence in the country."
As the memorial plaque in St. Mary's Square (located in San Francisco Chinatown) attests to this day, too many of those who served would never return.
On this Memorial Day, we consider the case of Captain Francis Brown Wai who fell on Red Beach at Leyte and received the Medal of Honor for his conspicuous gallantry.
The son of a Chinese father and a native Hawaiian mother, Wai grew up surfing with Duke Kahanamoku. He attended the Punahou School and Sacramento Junior College before enrolling in UCLA  where he had earned varsity football letters for the UCLA Bruins from 1937 to 38.
After enlisting in the Hawaii National Guard he was called to active duty at the outset of WW II. After attaining the rank of captain, which was rare for any Asian American, Wai was assigned to the US Army’s 24th Infantry Division (motto:  “First to Fight”).
For his extraordinary heroism in action during the landings in Leyte on October 1944, Capt. Wai received the Distinguished Service Cross. his  decoration was upgraded to a Medal of Honor in 2000 after a Department of Defense study concluded that his, and other minority soldiers’, combat decorations had been unfairly downgraded during the war. The amended citation reads as follows:
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Francis B. Wai, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Headquarters, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 20 October 1944, at Leyte, Philippine Islands. Captain Wai landed at Red Beach, Leyte, in the face of accurate, concentrated enemy fire from gun positions advantageously located in a palm grove bounded by submerged rice paddies. Finding the first four waves of American soldiers leaderless, disorganized, and pinned down on the open beach, he immediately assumed command. Issuing clear and concise orders, and disregarding heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, he began to move inland through the rice paddies without cover. The men, inspired by his cool demeanor and heroic example, rose from their positions and followed him. During the advance, Captain Wai repeatedly determined the locations of enemy strong points by deliberately exposing himself to draw their fire. In leading an assault upon the last remaining Japanese pillbox in the area, he was killed by its occupants. Captain Wai's courageous, aggressive leadership inspired the men, even after his death, to advance and destroy the enemy. His intrepid and determined efforts were largely responsible for the rapidity with which the initial beachhead was secured. Captain Wai's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.
Requiescat in pace.

Top US athletes to watch at Tokyo summer games
New Post has been published on https://tattlepress.com/sports/top-us-athletes-to-watch-at-tokyo-summer-games/
Top US athletes to watch at Tokyo summer games
Tumblr media
Every four years, the world watches as the Olympics provides the best athletes in the world an international platform to showcase their talents.
The United States will have stars from Summer Games past wearing the country’s colors once again. There will be the obvious names such as Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky. First-timers such as Noah Lyles appear primed to make themselves known to the world.
Soon, the competitors will be heading to Tokyo for an Olympics that will be quite different from any other as it is played during a global pandemic. But before they do, here are the Team USA athletes to know prior to the opening ceremonies on July 23 — from the beach volleyball court to the pool to the balance beam.
A’ja Wilson, women’s basketball
Twitter: @_ajawilson22
Instagram: aja22wilson
There are a handful of U.S. teams that are almost sure locks to win gold, and women’s basketball is at the top of that list. The squad has won six gold medals in a row with 49 consecutive wins along the way. Adding Las Vegas Aces guard A’ja Wilson to the mix should only stretch those unfathomable records.
Wilson, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick after leading the South Carolina Gamecocks to a national championship in 2017, is the reigning WNBA MVP. With Team USA, she’d be playing for college coach Dawn Staley once again.
Internationally, she’s been a member of Team USA since 2017 and was the youngest member of the team that won the 2018 FIBA World Cup.
Heimana Reynolds, men’s skateboarding (park)
Instagram: heimana_reynolds
With skateboarding making its debut on the Olympic program in Tokyo, any athlete to stand highest on the podium will be a first-time winner.
Heimana Reynolds has the chance to make history with a gold in men’s park. Growing up, his family operated a skatepark in his native Honolulu, Hawaii. The 23-year-old broke out in 2019, winning the Park World Championship a year after finishing second.
Allyson Felix, women’s track and field
Tumblr media
Allyson Felix has racked up nine medals in her Olympic career.
Patrick Smith, Getty Images
Twitter: @allysonfelix
Instagram: allysonfelix
Tokyo will mark Felix’s fifth Games, and she’s racked up nine medals (six gold, three silver) in a variety of events. She’ll be competing in the 400, which she placed second in during the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but missed qualifying for the 200, an event she won gold in nine years ago.
At 35, Felix will be one of the more well-known names in the American delegation, having reached the podium at four straight Olympics as the most decorated female track and field athlete in U.S. history.
Caeleb Dressel, men’s swimming
YouTube: Caeleb Dressel
Instagram: caelebdressel
Only two swimmers have won three individual golds at a single Olympics: Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps. With no Phelps as part of the delegation for the first time this century, Dressel – a freestyle and butterfly specialist — will garner a lot of attention on the men’s swimming side and could swim up to seven events (including relays). The 24-year-old led off the gold-medal 4×100 freestyle relay five years ago, but doesn’t have an individual medal of his own yet.
During the U.S. swimming trials, Dressel nearly broke his own 100-meter butterfly record and will also swim the 50 and 100 freestyle in Tokyo.
Simone Biles, women’s gymnastics
Twitter: @Simone_Biles
Instagram: simonebiles
At this point – and Biles has said this – “the GOAT” isn’t so much competing against others as she is competing against herself. The past accolades speak for themselves: five Olympic medals (four gold, one bronze) from Rio and 25 world championship medals (19 gold). The dominance is as simple as the fact that she hasn’t lost an all-around competition she entered 2013. Biles, 24, is expected to lead the women’s team to an all-around title, secure an all-around victory for herself and will surely dazzle in the individual events, particularly the vault and floor exercise. How the judges score what has never been done before will be a story to watch in Tokyo.
Katie Ledecky, women’s swimming
Twitter: @katieledecky
Instagram: katieledecky
Facebook: Katie Ledecky
Ledecky burst onto the Olympic scene as a 15-year-old at the 2012 Games in London and is the back-to-back 800-meter freestyle champion. The introduction of the 1500-meter freestyle for women at the Olympics, an event Ledecky also dominates, opens up another gold-medal possibility. And if Ledecky is at the top of her form, world records – some already hers – could fall.
The freestyle (200, 400, 800 and 1,500) will provide Ledecky the chance for four individual golds. She won all four at the U.S. swimming trials.
Sydney McLaughlin, women’s track and field
Twitter: @GoSydGo
Instagram: sydneymclaughlin16
After setting the NCAA record in the 400-meter hurdles for the Kentucky Wildcats in 2018, McLaughlin turned pro and placed second in the event at the 2019 World Championships, where she was a member of the victorious 4×400-meter relay. She’ll have to catch fellow American Dalilah Muhammad, the current world-record holder in the 400-meter hurdles, for gold in Tokyo.
Collin Morikawa, men’s golf
Twitter: @collin_morikawa
Instagram: collin_morikawa
Morikawa, 24, is one of four Americans to qualify for the Games, joining Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas and Xander Shauffele. The fourth-ranked player in the world and the 2020 PGA Championship winner, Morikawa has a chance to rise to the medal stand.
Megan Rapinoe, women’s soccer
Twitter: @mPinoe
Instagram: mrapinoe
Facebook: Megan Rapinoe
Perhaps no team in the American delegation has more established success than the women’s soccer team, and Rapinoe is among the most decorated (two World Cup golds, one Olympic gold) on the world stage. But the squad will be looking to avenge a disappointing fifth-place finish in Rio.
Carli Lloyd on USWNT’s mindset with uncertainty about Olympics: ‘We’re all gearing up for it’
Sports Seriously: Mackenzie Salmon connected with USWNT legend Carli Lloyd to gauge how the team is preparing for the summer games in Tokyo and if there’s any hesitation that they will actually take place.
USA TODAY
Diana Taurasi, women’s basketball
Twitter: @DianaTaurasi
Instagram: dianataurasi
Taurasi, 39, has never lost a game at the Olympics and already has four gold medals. The WNBA’s all-time leading scorer is currently nursing a fractured sternum but should be good to go for Tokyo, where she’ll be the veteran for a women’s basketball program looking to continue its international dominance.
Nyjah Huston, men’s skateboarding (street)
Tumblr media
Nyjah Huston is a four-time world champion in skateboarding.
Alessandra Tarantino, AP
Instagram: nyjah
A four-time world champion, Nyjah Huston clinched his spot in the Olympics with a second-place finish at the 2021 World Street Championships in Rome in early June. Yuto Horigome, the world No. 2 who bested Huston in Rome, should be his primary competition. According to NBC, Huston is skateboarding’s all-time leader in prize money earned.
Noah Lyles, men’s track and field
Twitter: @LylesNoah
Instagram: nojo18
Facebook: Noah Lyles
Barely missing the 2016 Olympic roster out of high school, Noah Lyles will enter the 2020 Games with high expectations in an Olympic staple, track and field. At the 2019 World Championships, he won gold in the 200 and ran a leg of the 4×100-relay that won gold. There’s a chance for multiple medal opportunities – Lyles’ personal best in the 100 is 9.86 seconds – but he should be the favorite to win the 200 in Tokyo.
Cat Osterman, softball
Twitter: @catosterman
Instagram: catosterman
Facebook: Cat Osterman
As softball returns to the Olympic program for the first time since 2008, Osterman has the chance to return to the Games for a third time. In 2004 Athens, she was the lone collegiate player to join the gold-medal-winning Team USA. Four years later, the U.S. fell short in the gold-medal game to Japan; Osterman was also part of that squad. Now 38 years old, the former Texas Longhorn will be the oldest member of the team.
Sha’Carri Richardson, women’s track and field
Twitter: @itskerrii
Instagram: carririchardson_
Arguably the breakout star of U.S. track and field trials, Richardson raced to first in the 100 and will be a medal contender in Tokyo.
The 2019 NCAA champion in the 100 dash while representing the LSU Tigers, she posted a 10.72 earlier this year and came close to beating that mark at the USA Track and Field Golden Games in May. She has the second-fastest time in the world this year.
Grant Holloway, men’s track and field
Twitter: @Flaamingoo_
Instagram: flaamingoo_
Grant Holloway is currently the No. 1-ranked men’s 110-meter hurdler in the world. He won the 2019 World Championships in Doha, and in Tokyo, the 21-year-old University of Florida product will be the guy to beat. Earlier this year, Holloway set the 60-meter world record (7.29 seconds), breaking a mark that had stood for 27 years. At the track and field trials, Holloway nearly beat the world record – missing the mark by one-hundredth of a second – with a personal best of 12.81 seconds.
Carissa Moore, women’s surfing

Carissa Moore is a four-time world champion and Hawaii native who attended the same high school as President Barack Obama (Punahou High). A strong 2021 season in the World Surf League has her ranked No. 1, and she’s the reigning world champion from 2019.
Tamyra Mensah-Stock, women’s wrestling
Twitter: @MensahTamStock
Instagram: mensahtamyrastock
The U.S. trials champion in 2016, Tamyra Mensah-Stock did not go to Rio because the team as a whole failed to qualify for the 150-pound weight class. That’s not an issue for Team USA or Mensah-Stock in these Olympics. Fresh off a world championship in 2019 and the reigning Trials winner once again, Mensah-Stock, 29, should be a contender for gold.
Alix Klineman, women’s beach volleyball
Twitter: @alixklineman
Instagram: alixklineman
Alix Klineman has represented the U.S. on the volleyball court for nearly a decade, but this will be her first Olympics. Since leaving the indoor game to focus on beach volleyball full-time in 2017, she’s found success with partner April Ross, who won bronze alongside Kerri Walsh Jennings in Rio five years ago.
Sunisa Lee, women’s gymnastics
Twitter: @sunisalee_
Instagram: sunisalee_
Every member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team other than Simone Biles could be on this list, as they are near locks to win the overall team gold. The roster won’t be formally set until late June, but Lee could take an individual gold home on the uneven bars.
Nevin Harrison, canoe, kayak
Twitter: @nevin_harrison
Instagram: nevinharrison
Harrison became the first C1 200-meter sprint canoe champion at the age of 17 two years ago. In May, she won the event again at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup with a time of 47.59 seconds – two seconds faster than her world championship time. Both victories are signs that Harrison portends to be a gold medal contender in Tokyo, where women’s canoeing is making its Olympic program debut. Team USA has not won a canoeing medal since 1992.
April Ross, women’s beach volleyball

A two-time Olympic medalist (2012 silver, 2016 bronze), Ross will be working with her third teammate at the Games in Klineman. The duo is coming off a silver medal at the 2019 world championship. Klineman and Ross have combined for four gold and a silver on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour since 2018 and finished second at the World Championships in 2019. Can this be the Games Ross reaches the top of the podium?
Eddy Alvarez, baseball
Twitter: @eddyalvarez90
An infielder with the Miami Marlins organization, Alvarez has an Olympic past — from the Winter Games. At Sochi 2014, the Miami-born Alvarez won a silver medal in the 5,000-meter speed skating relay. His baseball career picked up after that, and now he’s looking for gold on the diamond in baseball’s return to the Olympics for the first time since 2008 in a country that is passionate about the sport.

🗣 Day 28 one of the Best Presidents I had the pleasure to seen in my day, now the orange man is trying to take his presidential status away... U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama II he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. His mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was a white American from Wichita, Kansas. His father, Barack Obama Sr., who was black, was from Alego, Kenya. They were both young college students at the University of Hawaii. When his father left for Harvard, his mother and Barack stayed behind, and his father ultimately returned alone to Kenya, where he worked as a government economist. Barack's mother remarried an Indonesian oil manager and moved to Jakarta when Barack was six. He later recounted Indonesia as simultaneously lush and a harrowing exposure to tropical poverty. He returned to Hawaii, where he was brought up largely by his grandparents. The family lived in a small apartment - his grandfather was a furniture salesman and an unsuccessful insurance agent and his grandmother worked in a bank - but Barack managed to get into Punahou School, Hawaii's top prep academy. His father wrote to him regularly but, though he traveled around the world on official business for Kenya, he visited only once, when Barack was ten. Obama attended Columbia University, but found New York's racial tension inescapable. He became a community organizer for a small Chicago church-based group for three years, helping poor South Side residents cope with a wave of plant closings. He then attended Harvard Law School, and in 1990 became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. He turned down a prestigious judicial clerkship, choosing instead to practice civil-rights law back in Chicago, representing victims of housing and employment discrimination and working on voting-rights legislation. He also began teaching at the University of Chicago Law School, and married Michelle Robinson (now Michelle Obama, a fellow attorney; their daughters are Sasha Obama and Malia Obama. Eventually, he was elected to the Illinois state senate, where his district included both Hyde Park and some of the poorest ghettos on the South Side. In 2004, Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate as (at Elagainst) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9HhWDAFN51/?igshid=2ygtjit9cuhs

Aloha!  I am really excited to be in Honolulu, Hawaii doing research on Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1959 trip to Hawaii.  As a filmmaker and an African American scholar, the work that I’m doing sits right in the center of my purpose.  So, as I begin the journey of making this film…I thought that it was a good time to reflect how I got here.
The chief influence on my life as a scholar was my father.  He was a military man, who had a dream of college that was deferred by white racism in the south.  He gave me David Walker’s “Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World” at the age of 6 along with the expectation that I would receive a Master’s degree.  Think about that a man without a college degree, had the expectation that his son would receive a Master’s Degree.
As I pursued my BA in African American Studies at UCLA, I often heard the theme of “Walking in the Footsteps of our Ancestors.”  At the time, I thought this term was centered around the many ancestors who died before I was born.  But then there was pops.  The books that he gave me as a child keep showing up in courses that I took at UCLA. He was the living bridge that brought me to UCLA.
At UCLA I discovered a filmmaker that created a film about black family that made me want to go to film school.   And I was introduced an individual that would change life as I knew it.
In 1967 a Giant landed at UCLA film school from Mississippi via Watts.  This soft spoken, humble man would create films that would be some of the loudest of the LA Rebellion.   The LA Rebellion was the title given to the UCLA film arm of the Black Arts Movement, which was a part of the 1960s Black Power Movement.
“We thought that we were going to change the world,” said this filmmaker about he and his contemporaries at UCLA.  In many ways his film, “Killer of Sheep” did change the world.  The revolutionary act of showcasing a black family, honestly and openly shifted my thoughts about the role of film.  Before roaming into Professor Teshome Gabriel’s 3rd World Cinema Class, I thought film was just about entertainment.
This filmmaker taught me that films can be MORE.  His example has inspired me to pursure film as a career.  I see filmmaking as a service to my community.  This Lion was Charles Burnett.
I had a chance to meet him, when I was in the Production Program in USC’s Cinema Television Program. I discovered that he and I had someone in common, i.e. his editor and my mentor Edwin Santiago.  This connection brought us closer over the years, and now I consider him a mentor and a friend.
And to think this path was laid by my father.  From books at the age of 6, to UCLA’s African American Studies Program to an MFA from USC Cinema-TV.  Note: only 6% of African Americans have a Masters degree or higher.  And I got mine because my pops told me that was my destiny at 6 years old!
In January 2000, I was in the 3rd year of my MFA program.  One of my fellow students invited me to Executive Produce a commercial in Maui, Hawaii.  I remember wondering how many men from the South (I was born in Birmingham, AL) were invited to Hawaii to serve the local community.
Little did I know that on September 14th of 1959, a 5”7’ Giant landed in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Lion was lei’s in the Hawaiian tradition soon after arrival.  Unlike most visitors, his first step was into the political boxing ring.  He started his visit by calling Hawaiian Senator Hiram Fong to task for his position on segregation.
Less than 24 hours later, he called President Eisenhower to task for his position on segregation at a breakfast hosted by the Honolulu Ministerial Union.  This Lion was a pioneer in so many ways.  After his time with the minsters, he visited the Punahou School, which is now known, internationally, for one of its most impactful students, i.e. President Barack Obama.
This giant was introduced in the McKinley High School Auditorium by some of the most prominent religious figures on-island, before giving a speech entitled, “A Pastor’s Hope for America Today.”  But this was not just any pastor.  He was such an important figure that the 1st Hawaiian State House of Representatives invited him to speak.  His words about truth were so powerful that he caused a “flare-up” between representatives!
This Lion was Martin Luther King, Junior.  And before he marched over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, long before his march on Washington, he spent some time in the Aloha state.
So, long before I first landed in Hawaii in 2000, this Civil Rights icon walked this path, before me. And though I didn’t know it at the time, I was walking in the footsteps of a giant.   And long before I became a filmmaker, Academy Award Winner Charles Burnett walked this path, before me.  And though I didn’t know it at the time, I was walking in the footsteps of a giant.  Also, long before I became the man I was today, my pop laid the roadmap before me. And though I didn’t know it at the time, I was walking in the footsteps of a giant.
Throughout my life this seems to be a recurring theme.  From my father, to my mentor to the GREAT Martin Luther King.  These great men brought me are the bridge that brought me here today.  And I stand on the shoulders of Giants.
I’m honored to be on Oahu, as we celebrate the date of his birth.  Further, I’m honored to be in Hawaii researching his 1959 visit.  And along the way, I’m discovering many other African American Elders who call Hawaii home.

One word of your holy prayer that falls in the ear of a foolish rascal is sufficient to make him utter sweet speech like an experienced scholar. With your blessing, a pauper then becomes rich owning millions of gold coins and enjoying life with all its joys till ripe old age. When listening to one word can work such wonders, who can presume the reward obtained by those, who continuously chant your name with full custom of worship.
