Twice now I have tried to make a reblog reply about Walter and twice now Tumblr has eaten it. So let's try it this way @chaos-bringer-13
Allow me to take you back to the ✨QUARANTINE DAYS✨ and tell you the tale of a pumpkin that may or may not have housed a god
So back in good old 2020/21 we are in the thrall of the COVID-19 pandemic. My state in particular had super heavy quarantine restrictions, and as someone with lung issues, my mom and myself were not taking any chances. I haven't left my house in maybe 5 months. Nor have I seen any of my friends outside of video calls. Senior year of High School so far has sucked.
I'm talking to my friend, we'll call her Marie, and I mention off hand "Yeah I'm starting to feel a bit lonely." Now Marie has known me for a solid 8 years at this point. She knows my type of humor and attachment to what we would now and days call "skrungly" objects. She decides "hmm. I can fix this!"
Marie's mom (who was... certainly a human being) for some god forsaken reason decided to buy a white pumpkin and give it to Marie with the idea that she would harvest the seeds from it and plant them in the garden (why she did this instead of just buying pumpkin seeds I will never know). Instead of doing this, Marie takes this pumpkin and draws a realistic face on it that can only be described as similar to the handsome squidward meme. She drives to my house, sets the pumpkin on my doorstep with a note, and then FUCKING BOOKS IT.
I open the door to see this pumpkin with a note that reads "Hello Momther, I am Walter."
(Not the best photo but this is in fact Walter sitting in the dark in my front yard while Marie (not pictured) stands on my driveway holding a single candle and chanting).
Anyway immediately I take him inside completely smitten and unknowing as to what this pumpkin will create.
At this point of quarantine, we have gone back to classes but they are completely online. I decide that the best thing I could possibly do with Walter is set him on a stack of notebooks behind me so that when I turn my camera on he would be there... watching. Notably, one guy who never unmuted himself did so just long enough to ask "Void... what the fuck is that."
Needless to say I got endless entertainment from the reactions, but all good things have to come to an end. Unfortunately, I live in a desert and pumpkins simply don't survive. They typically would rot within a few days where I was living at the time, so my Mom told me to move it outside at least. I decide to put him by the front door. This front door has a little half wall that leads up to it. I put him on top of it facing the walkway so whenever a package is delivered the mailman would be faced with Walter and have to make eye contact before leaving the mail. I figure I'll probably get a couple more days out of him before he rots.
This is where it starts to get weird
Another week passes. Two. Unlike every single pumpkin I've ever had for Halloween, Walter shows no signs of rotting despite being exposed to the elements. The pumpkin is at this point about a month and a half old and still perfectly fine. Marie, our friends, and I all kind of laugh it off as a random one time thing and expect it to rot within another week.
IT. FUCKING. DOESN'T.
4 months into having Walter and he is still as good as new. Around this time the vaccines for covid started rolling out, so my friends and I get to see each other again. They are just as baffled as me about Walter. Of course, us being us, we have been referring to Walter like an actual person this whole time because that's just our humor. We give him little head pats and forehead rubs as we enter or leave my house and say hello/goodbye to him.
Also around this time, my mom and myself are beginning to prep for moving to another state. We have also started doing some in person classes again. I had been cleaning out my room one morning, and just so happened to leave a piece of sea glass in front of Walter as I left for school. I had a strangely good day. Managed to get an A on a test if I remember right. I come home, see the glass in front of the pumpkin, and start thinking. The next day I leave him something else. Another good luck day! I try this again and every single time I leave him an offering something good happens! I tell my friends about it and they start doing it too and experiencing the same results. We decide that he must be some god of luck inhabiting this pumpkin vessel and rewinding time on it to keep it from rotting.
At some point someone gave him an orange and I swear to god the pumpkin started getting orange marks on its forehead. He still wasn't rotting though! We decided that he obviously has been absorbing the power from the offerings.
Around this time I realise the I have somehow created a partially serious cult and decide I might as well lean into it. I actually enlisted the help of the neighbor kids to take this photo.
Time passes. Walter is about 10 months old now and still going strong. We have graduated highschool and I'm going to be moving in a week. I can't take Walter with me, so Marie decides she will take him. But first, she is going to help us move. It's a 6 hour drive. We put Walter in the passenger seat window so that all the cars passing us can see him.
After she helps us, Marie and Walter continue on to yet another state where Marie will be attending university. Walter is almost if not a year old when he finally starts to rot. Marie, in her dorm room mind you, makes a plaster cast of his head and redraws his face on it. To this day Walter hangs in his new, more durable vessel, guarding her spice cabinet.
By the end of Walter's reign, he had reached his 1st birthday, scared who knows how many mailmen, met 3 of my teachers in person, visited 3 USA states, and briefly had an instagram account.
#im pretty sure it was the heat of the car that finally kickstarted him to rot#he also used to bless things#like we buried a jar in the front yard full of modified plastic forks (we made fork denominations)#we had him bless that place we buried it by lighting a candle ominously in front of his face and simba-ing him with mint#walter the immortal

18 Things Every Man Should Do This Fall
F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” We believe it. Fall is our favorite time of the year. It’s a season where things are dying and transitioning into dormancy. But there’s also a last gasp of physical and psychic energy in the air. It’s like our minds and bodies know that we’ll soon be holed up for the winter and need to get out and get stuff done — and have a whole lot of fun — before the cold weather arrives. It’s harvest time! To help you make the most of this fall, we’ve put together a list of 18 things every man should do before the leaves are all the way off the trees. Complete each one before the winter solstice, and you’ll have created a bunch of memories to get you through the cold, dark months ahead. Let the fall adventures begin! There’s something satisfying about plucking a crisp apple straight from the branch. Find a local orchard and take your family to fill up baskets with a haul of fruit that can be bitten into directly or turned into apple crisps. While you’re there, see if they have a slingshot you can use to launch fallen/rotten apples into the air. In many areas of the country, fall is when state fairs are held. And, by our lights, they’re must-do affairs. Where else can you see prize-winning pigs, eat deep-fried Oreos, and buy airbrushed t-shirts of Tweety Bird all in one day? Take a spin on the Gravitron, try your luck at the midway games (here’s how to win 5 of them), and pet a goat. It’s a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells that only comes once a year. When the leaves start falling, it’s time to break out a big pot and get your chili game on. Better yet, round up your buddies for a chili cook-off (and a debate over whether beans belong in the mix or not). Winner gets bragging rights and a bellyful of everyone else’s attempts. Sure, it might seem childish, but who says being a grown man means you can’t have a little fun? Raking leaves is a necessary evil of homeownership, but it comes with a built-in reward. Once you’ve got a decent pile, take a running start and dive right in. The satisfying crunch, the earthy smell, the feeling of being covered in foliage — it’s fall distilled into one light-hearted act. Fall and football go hand-in-hand. There’s a raw energy to game day you can’t replicate — the anticipation in the air, the sea of team colors, the collective holding of breath as the ball sails towards the end zone. This season, make it a point to catch a game in person, whether it’s your college alma mater or the local high school team. Even if you’re not a die-hard fan, the sheer spectacle of it all is worth experiencing. Don’t miss out on the year’s only chance to turn produce into luminescent, hand-carved art. Rather than picking up your orange gourd from the bins outside a big box store, head to a veritable pumpkin patch to make your selection. Then, when it’s time to carve, mix things up and challenge yourself a bit. You can find plenty of pumpkin carving designs online, including these 6 manly stencils we’ve got available here. And don’t forget to roast those pumpkin seeds. Waste not, want not, gentlemen. Fall’s prime time to get out in the field, whether you’re after deer or ducks. Hunting requires patience, skill, and a healthy dose of respect for the great outdoors. If your hunt is a success, you’ll have a freezer full of meat that will last you all winter. And if you come home empty-handed? Well, that’s why they call it hunting. Pursuit is happiness! As the air gets crisp, it’s time to build up that woodpile. Grab your maul or splitting axe and get to work. There’s something truly satisfyingly about taking an axe to a log — the rhythmic thwack and the gratifying crack as it gives way. Not only does splitting firewood get you practical results, but it’s also a good workout to boot. Be sure to read our guides on how to correctly split firewood and how to stack and store it. Growing up, one of my family’s fall traditions was to put… http://dlvr.it/TDdXjV

hi acti. i just read the answer to your last ask and was wondering what brand of protein powder you're using? my protein levels were a bit low the last time i had a blood test so i'm thinking of starting to use a protein powder regularly but i'm not really sure what to look out for. do you or any followers have any advice on how to choose a good plant based protein powder?
I use Protein Works, which is 25g per scoop. The chocolate and vanilla are both really nice but I’d recommend using a blender and experimenting with water volume to get your desired thickness. It is quite sweet, so I like to balance it out with oats and seeds. I have the vanilla one in my morning shake. Sometimes I have half a scoop of the chocolate one in a glass of soy milk in the evenings as well, if I’ve not had much protein or I’ve done a lot of exercise that day.
There are cheaper options but I go for that one because the protein is derived from a good balance of different sources, which makes it more nutritious. It has pea, soy, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and brown rice. I use one scoop in my morning shake, mixed with half a cup of oats, 1tbsp of peanut butter, a banana and 1tsp of chia seeds. That’s about 35g by itself which is far more than you’d get from a typical breakfast, you can leave it overnight in the fridge so it’s very convenient, and it tastes really good.
If you’re looking for protein bars, Misfits are really nice, 15g each but are expensive, much cheaper if you buy 12 pack online but still not cheap. I just keep a box in the cupboard for occasions when I know I’ll be out all day and can’t control my food so much. Trek do protein oat bars which are much cheaper but also less protein (8g). I tend to go for those for more regular use but you could make your own in batches too, they don’t take long and last about a week in the fridge.
Huel is also really good as a meal replacement shake, a single serving (2 scoops) of the Black Edition is 40g, which research suggests is about as much as we can digest in one meal. It’s also only 400 calories for two scoops if you’re trying to maintain a deficit. Again, it’ll keep in the fridge overnight or at room temperature for a few hours, so it’s a great work/school lunch option.
You can supplement your intake with high protein snacks too like air fried chickpeas, nuts, Greek yogurt (there are a few oat/soy options) and hummus. If you’re not doing a lot of weightlifting or cardio you won’t need to incorporate even half of these options, but protein powder/bars are very easy ways to up your intake without changing your regular meals. Even just consciously making sure you are working protein into your meals and snacks will go a long way to upping your intake.

As I wrote this post, I discovered that my pumpkin plant was completely eaten by a squirrel and it sent me into a blind rage. Please be advised that the following post is mostly negative in tone.
I haven’t updated in a while, so here are the highlights to accentuate the positive:
The jasmine is blooming again
Cooked up some Japanese eggplant into a stir fry, I thought it was good (Michael thinks eggplant tastes like a shoe)
The kitchen basil plants are doing pretty good, growing offshoots.
Very bad news: the pumpkin plant has been COMPLETELY eaten. It was making good progress so I uncovered it and sprinkled chili powder (that was literally two days ago!) - did not work at ALL. There’s one REALLY big squirrel that’s been wreaking havoc on everything that’s not covered with netting or plastic. Goddammit. It was doing so well too. Wow I just checked it now and that REALLY pisses me off.
I could just keep things netted and caged off but it’s so hard to get into the garden and I hate looking at haphazard nets, and some plants need insects to pollinate. What the actual fuck do I do.
I am 100% on board with squirrel murder now. I swear to god if Michael ever gets that fat fuck, I’ll set up a grave just so I can dance on it.
I have been pretty discouraged this year - last years harvests were much better. No peppers and maybe a handful of cherry tomatoes. I’m still not watering and fertilizing enough. And I’ve finally had it with these goddamn squirrels. So spring was pretty alright this year but summer’s been a wash.
I should just say fuck summer and focus intensely on the fall garden at this point. Cover crop everything, cover everything in compost, pull out everything that I hate and cut my losses.
I have this weird hesitation around buying plants from the nursery. It feels like cheating, like I should start everything from seed or keep plants alive all season. Plus it’s expensive. But gardens I see online stay lush because they’re constantly sowing, growing, or replacing plants throughout the season, and I can’t expect some plants to look fresh and young forever.
I got some extra cash so I went to the Armstrong and bought myself some plants - lavender, another tomatillo, zinnias and cosmos. Michael asked for rosemary and snake plants, so we have those inside now.
How am I this bad at this??? Like, I actually feel like I’m doing a TERRIBLE job. Like the results I want demand way more effort than I provide. Like everything is TRYING to die. I feel like it’s all my own fault for not doing everything right. I really fucking hate summer now - friendship ended with summer, now spring is my best friend.
Maybe summer should be my off season - focus mostly on spring, just keep a few key plants that I want to harvest for summer, and cover crop everything else because this is so much bullshit to deal with. Spring and fall were significantly easier to deal with here. I am so pissed. Hate hate pain rage bloodlust rage
#garden logbook#gardening#auuuuauaggghhagaghhhh#the neighbor dropped off a bag of peaches from her tree so I will make jam#and that will be the only good part of this summer thus far

grocery list time~
literally just get these things if you want a vegan low cal life, because you can control portions and make things you enjoy eating with less calories- i made some example recipes under the list:
coffee.
SPICES. please make the investment into SPICES!
->continuation of spices, heres a basic list- cocoa powder, cinnamon, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, veggie bouillon powder/cubes, salt, pepper, lemon pepper, etc (you can find more online but please dont forget it)
->and simple sauces like soy sauce, basic hot sauce, mustard, white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, etc.
stevia or agave fruit sweetener. (please make sure whatever you choose you dont buy any sweetener with aspartame!!)
dairy free yogurt (i’ve heard coconut is good)
dairy free butter (earthbalance is my fav by far)
-> you could also make due with olive oil (cooking)
1st milk for normal stuff- unsweet cashew milk or unsweet creamy almond milk
->2nd milk for cooking- i suggest soymilk but creamy coconutmilk works good too
tofu. extra firm and silky work for different things (meat substitutes, egg substitute, diff. milk products substitutes) get either/both
carrots, mushrooms, chickpeas, and cauliflower all make good meat substitutes (bacon, chicken nuggets, pulled pork, etc) if cooked properly
OATS! plain oats are soooo versatile (used as flour, cereal, granola, crust, etc)
ricecakes (i use it as replacement for toast)
Pumpkin or sweet potato (in NO SYRUP canned form, very good for cooking low cal desserts or protein bars)
apple sauce (used for cooking and just yum- can be an egg substitute)
low cal noodle types- chickpea, edamame, shirataki, konjac, cauliflower, zucchini, spaghetti squash, and i think miracle noodle
literally any and all veggies and fruits- but a reminder of basics are broccoli, cucumber, onions, spinach, beets, eggplant, tomato, zucchini, potato, apple, banana, grapes, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, mango, etc
WARNING ⚠️ be careful of sugar free drink flavor packets as they contain aspartame and other strange ingredients that ppl have complained of side effects- i would suggest to steer clear of many of the packets and go for a large unsweetened lemonade or fruit punch bin of flavoring so you can make it yourself. please check ingredients for health reasons.
-> HOWEVER, drinks like olipop, simple truth organic, waterloo, and zevia all have flavored water/sparkling water/cola drinks that are aspartame free.
I highlighted things that i think are really important
Veggie dip: yogurt, seasoning spices (ranch seasoning is goated), and a tbsp or lemon or soysauc, all mixed and best used as a “veggie chip” dip, like baked cucumber chips
Literally any cake/protein bar: oats blended, protein powder, 1/2cup apple sauce OR mashed banana, some milk, and whatever toppings you like
Granola: oats, chia seeds, cut up fruit pieces, and maple syrup or honey for binding. mix in bag, bake on baking sheet on pan.
Hot n sour soup: you can use hot n sour packet or make veggie bouillon and add hot sauce, soy sauce, and tsp chili powder. Then (to whichever mix you’ve made) add egg mixing around, and then add extra firm tofu in little cubes. Let the soup mix well and set a little while cooling.
Nicecream: freeze banana. add banana, tbsp of milk, 2 tbsp of yogurt, tbsp of sweetener, and a fruit of choice (a tbsp of protein powder also will help). blend with blender and then let it sit for a minute- add whatever you want on top
my best “toast”: seasalt ricecake, spread 1tbsp vegan cream cheese, and then spread 1.5 tbsp of organic raspberry jelly.

I feel so silly I've been posting art online for years and I don't think I ever made one of these 😂 in all honesty though? I think a lot of it has to do with thinking people I already talk to know so it'd be irritating them to repeat it, but they really don't know so when they're surprised so am I. But yeah, if there's something you want to know, you're always welcome to ask!
Some random stuff about me:
⭐ Because I work from home my outfits are tank tops and lounge pants (I got those from Amazon and they are *chef's kiss*. That "kimono" from Hot Topic really does drop that low - I'm 5'2" and it looks ridiculous but I love it.
⭐ Copper compression gloves are wonderful.
⭐ I've got a pizza sauce recipe that's like our cheeseball recipe; the longer it sits the hotter it gets. I have no self-control with hot peppers and sauces and one day my stomach will have a hole burned through it because of this 🤣
⭐ I can and will blow through art pencils and micron pens, but I'll also hang onto the tiniest nubs and nearly-dry pens because I am terrible about buying more. I'd buy larger sets of what I use the most, but uh...*sticker shock*
⭐ I prefer physical books, but if it's an author I'm unsure of, I'll try the ebook first. I play Plants vs Zombies 2 more on the kindle than I do read.
⭐ Either I have some green witch magic or I've got mislabled seeds, but since I've started gardening I've managed to grow 4 foot tall dwarf variety marigolds.
⭐ Hated Halloween Kills. Very disappointed in it. I think the setup for 13 Ghosts would make a really freaking cool haunted attraction.
⭐ I love playing Mario Kart Tour, but it's not the same as when I could do online multiplayer in Mario Kart Wii. Up for sharing my friend code if you want to kick my ass lol
⭐ When I say I enjoy anime, I used to enjoy a large range, but since I've gotten older I've learned I just don't care for a lot of newer stories. But I have binged Azumanga Daioh, Bastard!!, Full Metal Panic, and Crayon Shin-chan multiple times.
⭐ I'm fairly sure winter, art block, and imposter syndrome meet up in skinny jeans, UGG boots, and pumpkin spice lattes for brunch every year.
⭐ One more that I forgot when I posted this a couple weeks back on patreon, I have a small Bath and Body Works addiction. Really love the Fairytale and Into the Night scents especially.

Prostadine Buy Online Official Site
Prostadine is a natural supplement that has gained a lot of attention lately for its potential health benefits. It contains a blend of ingredients that have been traditionally used to support prostate health, such as saw palmetto, pumpkin seed extract, and pygeum extract.
>>Click Here To Get Special Offers Today Visit Official Website<<
One of the main benefits of Prostadine is that it can help to reduce the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition is common in older men and can cause urinary problems such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty emptying the bladder.
Prostadine works by inhibiting the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can contribute to prostate enlargement. By reducing DHT levels, Prostadine can help to shrink the prostate gland and alleviate urinary symptoms.
In addition to its effects on prostate health, Prostadine may also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can benefit overall health and wellbeing. Some research suggests that Prostadine may even help to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
If you're interested in trying Prostadine, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider first to make sure it's safe for you to use. While Prostadine is generally considered safe for most people, it can interact with certain medications and may not be appropriate for people with certain medical conditions.

Top 10 games I missed in 2022
This was in many ways a transformative year. Or maybe that’s an overstatement and 2022 was end of an era. It followed a long term trend of me playing games less and less. I haven’t played a game on Steam since January. With that a maybe even some time prior I stopped paying attention to new releases. Until yesterday. Yesterday, I succumbed to the calling of Steam winter sales and visited my wishlist. I noticed that it was slightly messed up, because some of the games got released. After that I spent several hours looking for new releases and here we are. I admit It’s different, because many of these games are titles I’ve only found out about them being released.
Ofc, this year was massively, more than any of the previous years, influenced by board games and board game media. But getting around to actually buying some board games, I found out that the new hotness is rarely what I’m after. So, there are only 3 board games from this year I would like to own and 2 more I would like to try and write about (Stroganov’s take on colonization of Siberia could be made way better if it took a simple lesson from my n. 1 game). The three board games differ from each other a lot and video games on the list are reasonably diverse too. There are narrative experiences, Metroid and Castlevania inspired games both with jumping and without and free games I haven’t got time to try out yet. I also have one honorable mention: Victoria 3. Normally, this probably would make the list, but I don’t know enough to be excited and I’m still happy with my older Paradox games and I don’t need new ones (also, I know that Victoria 3 is beyond capabilities of my half-dead laptop).
10. Maptroid: Worlds
This is a commercial follow-up to a free game, you can still find online (not sure if flash?). It looks terrible, music probably does its job. It’s also an original and interesting take on the genre of Metroidvanias. It requires at least basic knowledge of the genre to get it and to appreciate it too. Because in Maptroid, you play on the minimap only. You explore and move around. The pacing is fast and that makes it fun. The commercial version promises more and that’s exactly what I want. Also, It’s only 2 bucks and some change.
9. Infernax
At first this looks like a straight clone of Castlevania but there’s more to it. There are choices and different endings. If you watch any footage of Infernax and like the genre of non-linear platformers you know the game is fun. It looks difficult with good controls and smooth movement. The fiction full of crosses and demons is something I can appreciate. The look is appealing too. A must play in a surely coming year of non-linear platformers.
8. Haiku the Robot
The third and final game of jumping and exploring on this list. Haiku is by far the most stylish one with beautiful sepia tones and detailed modern pixel art. It also looks like the most expansive one with many bosses, interesting puzzles and original lore. I’m afraid it might be too difficult as Hollow Knight seems to be a source of inspiration here. But without this baggage it looks like a fun and tight addition to the genre. One more thing, I like haiku.
7. Three Sisters
The first board game on the list is a heavier than average roll and write about tending to vegetable garden. The main reason this is here is the production. These warm pumpkin colored dice are just attractive and the whole game feels warm and welcoming in the similar manner. The game itself is about rolling dice and using them to tick boxes and form combos. Or if you go for the theme, and I think you should, planting seed, harvesting fruit and veggies, crafting in your garage. And that might be quite lovely when rainy and you can’t manage your garden for real.
6. Sunset Shift
This free game is about collecting and disposing garbage at a small private island. I watched some footage of it and it looks right up my alley. Basically, you drive around and the other friend is talking to you via radio giving the whole thing subtle story beats. I also enjoy games with either social or environmental message and this one seems to have both.
5. Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between
The original free Glitchhikers was one of my favourite cruising games. In it you drive on a highway while having random dialogues. This one expands it in all directions and adds many new environments and means of transport. I wonder about the message. Is it more than just more volume? Anyway, because of the original this one is on my bucket list too. Also, it’s the first game with no green or greenish pictures.
4. Citizen Sleeper
Frankly, I don’t quite understand what Citizen Sleeper is supposed to be. It’s a cyberpunk science fiction rpg controlled by dice, so there’s this tabletop element. Also, it seems to be focused on social issues, equality and such. You’re a working person and that reminds me of Cart Life, one of the greatest games ever. Jump Over the Age also made In Other Waters, an exciting UI experience I haven’t played yet but It’s one more reason to be interested in this game.
3. Village Rails
It’s a small and crunchy card game about building tracks with bucolic tones. The second part of the Village series from Osprey and designed by Matthew Dunstan with Breet J. Gilbert in a little unassuming box with a pleasant blue frame. It got praised by all of my board gaming sources including Dice Tower, Shut Up and Sit Down and Board Game Barrage. The game’s almost a filler but the combination of different goals and a special puzzle makes all decisions crunchy. For me it looks like a kind of game I would enjoy.
2. Roadwarden
Out of the green and into the brown. Roadwarden is a game I’ve been interested for a while. I think it does something interesting and that the devs limited themselves well to make a bigger game. The illustrations in this game look great too. I feel like I might enjoy its bleak fiction too. Being this highwayman and delivering messages, burning bodies sounds mundane, but also super atmospheric.
1. John Company: Second Edition
John Company is an unwieldy game from Wehrelig Games and Cole Wehrle of the Root fame. It’s complicated and long and an experience I want to have. I even managed to watch most of the five hours long session of Heavy Cardboard streamed on YouTube. In the game you and other players run the titular company and exploit India in order to get yourself a good retirement. The second edition tweaked almost everything and it looks great with one of the nicest board and components I’ve ever seen. Also, John Company: SE Is clear with its message and criticism of colonialism through its mechanics, something games like Stroganov ought to learn from.
All of the pictures used in this article are either from official sources or posted by the publisher at BGG(Village Rails).

There's a part of me that believes that some of the healthier stuff made from scratch may taste bland because our tastebuds are so used to all the flavor enhancing junk in the junk food, so you need to "reprogram" your tastebuds.
Like, I've had to eat healthier because my health demanded it (endometriosis really fucked with what I can or cannot eat to a point where I discovered the foods I could eat were sort of according to the Mediterranean diet). But also my fast metabolism makes it hard for me to gain weight so certain doctors aren't fucking accusing me of having an eating disorder.
So having a hugh-carb, high-fat, mid-hugh protein diet on top of exercising meant I thought I had to get used to bland foods.
It's actually the right kind and amount of salt plus spices and shit like that is what can make food not so bland (proper cooking oils helps, too). And it may start to seem bland at first , but after a while, that ended up stopping for me.
After a few years, I used the Yuka app to scan barcodes to check problematic ingredients for stuff, cuz I desperately wanted quick shit because I will have low-energy days on the rag and my muž will be at work. I discovered there's a dino nuggets that passed that sniff test and when I had that with a Hunt's brand 100% natural ketchup (also passed that test), that taste was VERY strong to me. Almost overwhelmingly. So I've turned those into either a treat or a "I have low energy and this is low energy prep" type of meal.
I'm still exploring more options for myself but I can't always afford the best quality of foods, so occasionally I have to go to the store with my muž to use the app and hope we can afford it.
Again: I'm trying to GAIN weight, but having endo that got worse made me susceptible to having bad gut reactions to certain foods of certain brands or types of preparations. I'm still trying to fix my diet to where I can happily eat more to gain weight. Believe me, in my case, gaining weight is a legit STRUGGLE because of my metabolism. I've been like this my whole life and once I've found a nice minimum of something working and finally started gaining weight, it's like I have a whole new body. More of me exists. I feel more like a person and not some beanpole anymore.
But I hate having people come up to me claiming they wished they could eat whatever they wanted and not gain a pound. Buddy, no you don't, because when you go seek counseling for abandonment issues, you end up with a bitch who claims (WITHOUT EVEN ASKING ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHOP WITH FOOD OR BODY IMAGE) that you have an eating disorder and wants to put you in in-patient care immediately. Why, despite explaining your situation to her, would she ignore you? Because she wanted to milk my Medicaid insurance. My suspicions were correct when I told her I'm done with her and she got PISSED.
But it's BECAUSE of her that I now, for the first time in my life, I obsess over a weight scale. And if that number drops in ANY WAY, I freak out a little, because I've worked SO FUCKING HARD to get myself OVER a hundred pounds (being no lighter than 110 is my goal, and I still have yet to reach it) and to see me drop a pound or two because I no longer have a decent pan for making a particular pancake recipe and because we're short on cash to get certain ingredients for my dinner for a couple of days makes me wanna beat the shit out of that "counselor."
My pancake recipe was a waffle recipe I found online. I spread a little honey on them. I eat them with fresh eggs (scrambled, cooked in olive oil) we buy from a friend of my mom's who raises chickens (WAY better than store-bought eggs), I struggle getting a decent lunch put together, but then I've got a buncha veggies and chicken thrown together in an olive oil broth for dinner. Afterwards, I eat garlic and chives pita crackers. I'll have nuts and pumpkin seeds as a snack as well. I eat yogurt for protein and probiotics, I do everything that I can plus weight-training exercises to build muscle. All so the numbers on a scale won't betray me if I go to seek professional help of any sort.
Healthy food has never been bland. It's the junk food that's more affordable that fucks with our tastebuds. If I ever get my hands on the recipe I need for a pizza, I WISH I could have pepperoni, but my body won't allow processed meats, so I will have to do without and use other toppings instead.
I experiment with recipes to see what works and what doesn't. I HOPE that once we get raised garden beds made, I can finally grow my own herbs and maybe even spices on this farm. Because guess what: A LOT OF PRODUCE ALSO TASTES BLAND DUE TO MONOCULTURE FARMING THAT PRIORITIZES HIGH YIELDS OVER NUTRITIONAL QUALITY. The microbes in the soil are shit in monoculture mass farming. I can't wait to taste my first farm-fresh carrot, and this is coming from someone who loved carrots since childhood.
Look up apps and stuff (I use Yuka) that when you scan the barcode, it'll tell you what ingredients are problematic, what the risks are, etc. I generally ignore whether something is rated as too salty or too caloric or anything like that because that's not what my body calls for. I pay attention to what harmful additives are in stuff. And you'll be surprised how much shit in grocery stores are risky to consume on a regular basis (because that's what's affordable.)
Yuka also does beauty product ratings too. Which includes deodorant, soaps, and hair care products. There's harmful shit in quite a few of those, and because endometriosis is still not fully understood, I'm avoiding sketchy or risky additives just to be safe, because I have no idea what could set my endo back off to getting worse in me again.
We shouldn't have to do this but here we are. Please stay safe out there and if you're eating healthy, understand that you may need to train your tastebuds some. Don't be afraid to experiment with recipes! Maybe go to your local farmer's market or even grow your own food! Or both! (If you can!)
Sorry for the ramble, but I didn't expect diet culture to do a fucking 2000s throwback complete with "healthy=bland" views. Also sorry for any typos; typing on my phone is a pain in the ass.
I know this is a tiny part of the wider problems born of diet culture, fatphobia, classicism, and racism but like god the idea that "healthy" food must inherently taste bad has completely ruined us as a society.
#for real tho im sorry about how long and rambly my reblog is#i encourage everyone to find an app they like that helps scan grocery items for sketchy ingredients#youd be surprised at how many makeup products are raising red flags like mad#also home-baked bread is more flavorful than sliced bread
