So, October. I really enjoyed reading Arsène Lupin for Pulptober last year, so I am going to repeat that. Also, Les Trois Mousquetaires. One of the books I am kind of feeling low-key guilty for not having yet read, so I'm going to use this opportunity to rectify that.
Tumblr media
Also interesting because of the mediums, Lupin is on paper while the Mousquetaires is digital, so I'm going to attempt the atrocity of reading both at the same time, under different circumstances. See how that goes.

Pulptober 2023 Themes Elaborated, Part Three
Bit late, but here goes!
First, links to Part One and Part Two
11-Domino Lady/Born From Vengeance, Driven To Justice: Honestly, this is another straightforward one, exactly what it says on the tin. Alternates: Judex*+, El Sombra+, Darkman*
12-The Punisher/Veteran Justice: It will not surprise y'all to learn that quite a few Pulp Heroes picked up the skills and abilities they use in their war against crime fighting in more traditional wars. Today is for them. Alternates: Secret Agent "X", John Reese
13-Hellboy/Hero With Good Publicity: Not every Pulp Hero operates in the shadows. Quite a few of them not only do their thing out in the open, they are famous, and oft-times popular with the public. Today is for them. Mystery, Inc., The Chimera Brigade+*
14-Arsene Lupin/The Lawless Bringing Law: Many Pulp Heroes are technically on the wrong side of the law, but these take it a step further; they are, or were, professional criminals; thieves, gangsters, pirates, smugglers, hitmen...they made their living breaking the law, but that doesn't make them any less heroic or willing to do the right thing when needed. Alternates: Bandette, The Goon, Modesty Blaise
15-Tintin/Humor and Heroism: Traditionally, stories of Pulp Heroes are adventure stories, meant to thrill and excite. But sometimes, they're also meant to make you laugh. Alternates: Breckinridge Ellkins*, Paperinik, Lupin III*

Pulptober 2: Doc Savage
Tumblr media
Here is a very low-effort edit picturing Doc Savage the moment he realizes that yet another year has passed without me reading any of his stories.
This is getting more and more awkward each year.
(On an unrelated note: I won't be here tomorrow, because I have to run home to my parents to get the cat vaccinated. But I'm not giving up or anything! I'll catch it up when I get back.)

I appreciate it.
Aaand it looks like you used the image I RBed, I'm so embarrassed.
Pulptober 5th: All For Love - John Carter
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A healthy dose of space swashbuckler today. I have read A Princess of Mars and there's a few more ERBs hiding in the unread pile somewhere. Wish I'd found them when I was a little younger, I would have been deeply obsessed by this sort of thing as a teenager. Arts by Ken Kelly, Michael Whelan, Lucio Parrillo and Frank Frazetta. (and just for @krinsbez I tried to get the redder Dejahs. Forgive me for the Whelan.)

Pulptober 2023 Prompts Elaborated, Part Two
Before we begin, link to part one:
Again, plus sign next to an alt means it was @maxwell-grant's idea, asterisk means I haven't read the source material.
6-The Lone Ranger/The Mask Does What The Badge Can't: Another fairly straightforward one; despite the core concept of the Hero Pulps being that the protagonist is a vigilante, seeking to bring justice outside the legal system, etc. many Pulp Heroes are, are *part* of the legal system. Today is for them. Alternates: The Whisperer, Dick Tracy*, The Black Bat (Yes, DAs count also)
7-The Spider/Tortured Justice: The weed of crime may bear bitter fruit, but fighting against it is no picnic either. Some Pulp Heroes go through not just physical, but also emotional Hell on the regular, enduring tremendous loss, heartbreak, and angst whenever they "suit up". Today is their day. Alternates: Elric of Melnibone*+, The Moon Man
8-Nita Van Sloan/Remember The Ladies: Today's theme is a famous quote from a letter that was sent to future US President John Adams by his wife Abigail, a power couple that, unusually for the time considered each other to be equals, and worked as a partnership. Similarly, many Pulp Heroes work alongside a Love Interest who is more than just a Damsel In Distress, but an partner in the crime fighting business. Alternates: Nora Charles*, Dian Belmont, Margo Lane*.
9-John Blacksad/Heroes Don't Have To Be Human: For almost as long as human beings have told stories, some of those stories have been about animals with human characteristics. It is not, therefore, a surprise that the same applies to Pulp Heroes. Alternates: Scrooge McDuck, Inca the Siberian Cat+*
10-The Grey Seal/Gone But Not Quite Forgotten. Pulp Heroes have been around for over a century, and there are *a lot* of them. It is, therefore, not surprising that so many of them have fallen between the cracks and been almost forgotten, even those that were important contributors to the genre's evolution. Today is for them. Alternates: Phra the Phoenician*, Reverend Dr. Syn*

So, I'm still alive
I think I'm just going to skip a few heroes here. Not the Green Hornet, obviously, the Green Hornet is amazing.
Meanwhile, here is me reading the Arsène Lupin book in two different castles. In case you were wondering what I have been doing these past days.

Pulptober Final Roundup, 2023
Yes, it's unacceptably late, but also, wow there's a lot to do, because we got a whole bunch of late posts and also I somehow missed everything @skjam posted last year, and I cannot understate how upset I am about that.
So, to start, I will list the things that @Skjam posted for Pulptober last year:
-This excellent post in which he tried to come up with Pulp-ier versions of...all sorts of things.
-A post in which he goes over Pulp things Goodreads recc'd him.
-For Pulptober 1st of last year, a review of two stories featuring that day's Character, The Shadow.
-For Pulptober 2nd of last year, a review of a story involving a character who fit that day's Theme, Larger Than Life
-For Pulptober 3rd of last year, he posted a review of serial starring that day's Characters, The Green Hornet and Kato.
-A post reviewing a "new Pulp" story featuring the original character, The Red Jackal.
Next, I will list @skjam's belated contributions to Pulptober this year:
-For Pulptober 5th, he posted a review of a story that fit the day's Theme, All For Love, and had a cameo by the day's Character, John Carter.
-For Pulptober 7th & 8th, he posted a review of a story featuring those days' Characters, The Spider and Nita van Sloan.
-For Pulptober 13th, he posted a review of a story related to that day's Character, Hellboy.
-For Pulptober 14th, he posted a review of a story starring that day's Character, Arsene Lupin.
-And finally, for Pulptober 16th, he posted a review of a story featuring that day's Characters, The Blackhawks.
Also bringing it a little late was @haldrada-art, who posted several arts for the period covered by previous roundups, after those roundup were posted, that I haven't updated. To wit:
-For Pulptober 20th, he posted an original art of that day's Character, Solomon Kane
-For Pulptober 23rd, he posted an original art of that day's Character, The Question.
-For Pulptober 25th, he posted an original art of that day's Character, The Nytalope.
-For Pulptober 26th, he posted an original art of that day's Character, The Phantom.
Aaand that covers everything I missed, I think. Please tell me if there's anything else, folks!
28-The Green Lama/Where Science and Supernatural Collide
-@themailedfist-blog posted some arts of that day's Character, The Green Lama.
29-Jules De Grandin/Ghost Breaker
-@themailedfist-blog posted some arts of the BPRD, which fit the day's Theme, Ghost Breaker(s)
30-Athena Voltaire/Throwback Heroes
-@themailedfist-blog posted an art of Indiana Jones, who fit the day's Theme, Throwback Heroes
31-Batman/Gizmos & Gadgets
-@themailedfist-blog posted several arts of the day's Character, The Batman.
-@haldrada-art posted an original art of that day's Character, The Batman.
Bonus: @themailedfist-blog posted a photo of his magnificent cosplay of The Spider!
Thank you to everyone who participated, it was surprisingly stressful for me this year, but still a lot of fun ,and I am looking forward to next year!
And remember, even if you're late, you can still participate, just let me know, so I can share it!

Thank you to everyone!
