This is @nopalitosf Chef/Partner Gonzalo Guzman. If you don't know him, he's a great chef and sort of a big deal. This photo was taken by a lady named Monica Campbell at a recent @lacocinasf event. Monica is a journalist for #PublicRadioInternational (PRI) and was in town doing a story about #mole. The article/radio spot, aired on December 26th. It is a great listen, and the article includes mole recipes in its conclusion. Michael Feldman and “Whad’Ya Know?” Bring “not much” to Columbus

The International House of Radio set up shop Aug. 2, at Otterbein University’s Fritsche Theatre  for a live broadcast of “Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know?”

The sold-out crowd was enthusiastic during the broadcast, which was plagued by balky portable mikes during Hour 1.

The stage was festooned with an odd array of props including a headless skeleton, an oversized fire hydrant and bird bath, a large bell, a fake tree, an Ohio burgee and a cardinal decked out in an Otterbein jersey. The musical duo of pianist John Thulin and bassist Jaff Hamann were joined by guest drummer Aaron Scott and warmed up the crowd with a set of Vince Guaraldi-esque jazz that wouldn’t have sounded out of place in a “Peanuts” special. Over the course of the 2-hour show, Sound Bites wondered how the exceptional musicians must feel to know: 1) that the cheering after your tunes is prompted in part by a light-up “applause” sign: and 2) “Whad’Ya Know” is a show where the audience streams to the bathroom when the band begins playing.

Once the introductions were through and the red light on stage began to glow, the show began with its traditional opening:

Feldman: Well, whad’ya know?

Audience: Not much! YOU?

Feldman’s jokes focused on Central Ohio and the best included the news (that isn’t) that the woman in Ed FitzGerald’s parked car at 4:30 a.m. was Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and that “the Ohio State Buckeyes are favored … at least around here.” One bit began (and ended) with “a nun, a priest and Gordon Gee walk into a bar…” And Disclaimer No 2 was, “It’s a marching band, not a seminary.”

There were also plenty of groaners, but that’s part of Feldman’s, the host and kosher beefcake’s, charm.

Coshocton’s own Lydia Loveless and her band kicked off Hour 2 with two songs, including the title track, from her Somewhere Else album. Hers is a gritty blend of rock-country music, with two guitars, pedal steel, stand-up bass and drums, and her strong voice made it clear music fans will be hearing a lot more from this 23-year-old musician.

Other locals included Coyote Peterson, who was joined by a snake and Darth Gator the juvenile alligator.  The animals charmed announcer Sara Nics and freaked Feldman out a bit. Alex Bandar of the Columbus Idea Factory chatted about his Franklinton-based community workshop and learning center. And restaurateur Elizabeth Lessner plied the “Whad’Ya Know?” crew with strong drinks and hot dogs from her renowned establishments.

For long-time fans of the show, it’s strange to not see (and not hear) Jim Packard during the quiz and breaks; however, Nics is an able stand-in for the irreplaceable co-host, who died in 2012.
