While the 1872-73 timeline is mostly marked by power ballads (it's a love story) the rest of the songs are either straight-up d̷͍̼̒̍o̸̮͝ơ̵̻m̷͎̂ ̷̨̑̎m̵̦̮͝e̶̺͕̍̓ṱ̴̈̽a̸͖̎̍l̶̩̈́̂ or they're some flavor of experimental/noise/atmospheric black metal. Or they're strategically placed video game soundtracks that make me burst into tears bc I'm ridiculous, but prob sound out of place to an emotionally stable individual.

Anyway they match up with the chapter order until you get to "Litany of Desire," which covers chapters 10 + 11. After that it's [chapter number] -1.

Body Void and Xiu Xiu were thrown in for the somatic sound effect. I had to be careful which "meant to make you feel weird" songs I included; I may think it's funny to listen to ultra-low frequency tones high off my ass until I trigger my occipital neuralgia and puke, but that's a personal choice.

1) "The Bad Luck That Saved You From Something Worse": You hear that noise at the beginning? I hate it. It feels like feelers inside my skull. That's the feeling of restarting at the beginning of a time loop--something shitty happened and I have no clue what I was doing or what I'm supposed to do next. #hofercore

2) "The Parasite" - the first time I heard this song, Sullivan and Royston popped into my head.

Then Royston started bitching me out because it wasn't his fault they were here and Sullivan wasn't dead and they weren't supposed to be here and behbehbehbehbeh.

3) "No One Like You": Not just a '80s song because Jamie is a millennial. No no. There's a reason I put this as The Song for the beginning of the bar fight loop (there are loops within loops bc I love myself. Twine loves this too.)

Each time they go it gets harder bc Sullivan keeps forgetting everything lol.

4) "High Plains Eulogy": This is the first Royston POV chapter and he has eyeballs. He realizes he's fucked up. IDK if he realizes there was literally nothing he could do to get here any sooner. (I'm willing to give him this much: Sullivan being pissed off and avoiding returning his letters fucks the run every single time it happens.) This is the first of many "Royston is a visual learner" chapters.

5) "Psalm III - Olam Teshuvah": You hear the dripping and screaming in the beginning? I think I'm being clever and warning you what's going to happen with Martin, who is just standing there in a catatonic stupor.

6) "Ace of Spades": This was, at the time, the most ridiculous thing I'd ever written. It is 100% Royston's fault the shootout happened in the first place, let alone escalated to the degree that Sullivan couldn't reel it in. Sullivan would have compared it to bullriding, if he'd "ever partaken in such a foolish activity."

7) "Ashen Era": Johnson and White are explaining the tree to Sullivan. I'm warning you about the tree with this song.

8) "This One Has No Heart": I mean… [gestures at Martin; gestures at Royston] … they're both fucked.

9) "Hysteria":

Director's Commentary moment, are you ready?

In the prologue, Hofer's ears start ringing. This is because there was a previous run where he caught a bullet in the neck and fucking died. (Tinnitus is a warning you're about to do the same stupid shit that got you killed previously. Sullivan doesn't really get that bc he keeps finding new exciting ways to die.)

When Hofer got shot in the neck, that restarted the loop--Sullivan dies in that cabin if Hofer doesn't treat his leg. So as far as Royston was concerned, he was just in the train, shot full of the Delilah Special, and now he's opening his eyes and Sullivan is fine and he doesn't know if Sullivan remembers/hates him/etc. and he can't fly out of bed all dramatic like he wants to bc he literally has no control over his skeletal muscles (thanks, hemlock and whatever else Delilah hit him with.)

Living His Word

The steadfast love of the LORD's never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning great is thy faithfulness. "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in Him." — Lamentations 3:22-24

As one surveys the landscape of life and all its troubles, sufferings, and challenges, we know there is always hope for the believer—"the LORD is my portion." The Lord is always the source of hope.

In our passage, describing the Lord as "my portion" may be a reference to a time past in Canaan when the land was portioned out among the different tribes. It was there that Aaron and the priestly tribe of the Levites were given no land, but instead, the Lord said, "I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel" (Numbers 18:20). It is a picture of a special and personal relationship with God since the priests were set apart in service to Him. It is the same kind of relationship with God that inspired the Psalmist to proclaim through a crisis that "God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever" (Psalm 73:26)!

A personal relationship with God, made possible by the redemption that comes through Christ, is the foundation of faith and the essence of hope. Such divine hope exists by knowing the true character of God. Our passage comes from a time past, but faith brings it into an experience with God that can be had in the present. God's character—yesterday, today, and forever—is that of steadfast love, promising the faithful His constant presence and His unchanging love.

God's mercies show His compassion toward His people which never ends. "Because of our God's merciful compassion, the dawn from on high will visit us to shine on those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace" (Luke 1:78-79). And He is faithful. It is God's faithfulness in which we can rest with hope; it is a faithfulness that never fails. When Moses received the Ten Commandments the Lord spoke to him saying, "The Lord, the Lord God, is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth" (Exodus 34:6).

Love, mercy, and faithfulness are characteristics of God that are available and new every morning. No matter your sins of yesterday, the trouble, the suffering, the challenges today, God is there for us each and every day. Sometimes it is a blessed do-over that comes with a new day. Other days one is given a fresh anointing, power, strength, and courage to get through something hard. And for those who believe, each day is an opportunity to walk in a fresh, personal, loving relationship with God. He is all we need, and He is our portion forever fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Christ is the aroma and assurance of God's steadfast love, mercy, and faithfulness. His death and resurrection took the relationship with God from the past into the present, where He is with you every day.

The άνάλαβος (analavos) is the distinctive garment of a monk or a nun tonsured into the highest grade of Orthodox monasticism, the Great Schema, and is adorned with the instruments of the Passion of Christ. It takes its name from the Greek αναλαμβάνω (“to take up”), serving as a constant reminder to the one who wears it that he or she must “take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23). The ornately-plaited Crosses that cover the analavos, the polystavrion (πολυσταύριον, from πολύς, “many,” and σταυρός, “Cross”) — a name often, though less accurately, also applied to the analavos — reminds the monastic that he or she is “crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20).

With regard to each image on the analavos, the rooster represents “the cock [that] crowed” (Matthew 26:74; Mark 14:68 Luke 22:60; John 18:27) after Saint Peter had “denied thrice” His Master and Lord (John 13:38).

The pillar represents the column to which Pilate bound Christ “when he scourged Him” (Mark 15:15) “by Whose stripes we were healed” (Isaiah 53:5; I Peter 2:24).

The wreath garlanding the Cross represents the “crown of thorns” (Matthew 27:29; Mark 15:17; John 19:2) that “the soldiers platted” (John 19:2) and “put upon the head” (Matthew 27:29) of “God our King of old” (Psalm 73:13), Who freed man from having to contend against “thorns and thistles in the sweat of his brow” (Genesis 3:18-19).

The upright post and the traverse beam represent the stipes and the patibulum that formed “the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14), upon which “all day long He stretched forth His hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people” (Isaiah 65:2; Romans 10:21).

The four spikes at the center of the Cross and the hammer beneath its base represent the “nails” (John 20:25) and hammer with which “they pierced” (Psalm 21:16; John 19:37) “His hands and His feet” (Luke 24:40). when they “lifted up from the earth” (John 12:32) Him Who “blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us by nailing it to His Cross” (Colossians 2:14).

The base upon which the Cross stands represents “the place, which is called 'Calvary' (Luke 23:33), or 'Golgotha', that is to say, the Place of the Skull” (Matthew 27:33), “where they crucified Him” (John 19:18) Who “wrought salvation in the midst of the earth” (Psalm 73:13).

The skull and crossbones represent “the first man Adam” (I Corinthians 15:45), who by tradition “returned unto the ground” (Genesis 3:19) at this very spot, the reason that this place of execution, “full of dead men’s bones” (Matthew 23:27) became the place where “the last Adam was made a quickening spirit” (I Corinthians 15:45).

The plaque on top of the Cross represents the titulus, the “title” (John 19:19-20), with “the superscription of His accusation” (Mark 15:26), which “Pilate wrote” (John 19:19) “and set up over His head” (Matthew 27:37); however, instead of “Jesus of Nazareth the king of the Jews” (John 19:19), which “was written over Him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew” (Luke 23:38), the three languages being an allusion to the Three Hypostases “of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), this titulus reads, “The King of Glory” (Psalm 23:7-10), “for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (I Corinthians 2:8).

The reed represents the “hyssop” (John 19:29) upon which was put “a sponge full of vinegar” (Mark 15:36), which was then “put to His mouth” (John 19:29) when in His “thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink” (Psalm 68:21), Him of Whom it was said that “all wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth” (Luke 4:22).

The lance represents the “spear [that] pierced His side”; “and forthwith came there out blood and water” (John 19:34) from Him Who “took one of Adam's ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof" (Genesis 2:21) and Who “washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Revelation 1:5).

The plaque at the bottom of the Cross represents the suppedaneum of Christ, “His footstool” (Psalm 98:5), “the place where His feet have stood” (Psalm 131:7). It is slanted because, according to one tradition, at the moment when “Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit” (Mark 15:37), He allowed a violent death spasm to convulse His legs, dislodging His footrest in such a manner that one end pointed upwards, indicating that the soul of the penitent thief, Saint Dismas, “the one on His right hand” (Mark 15:27) would be “carried up into Heaven” (Luke 24:51), while the other end, pointed downwards, indicated that the soul of the impenitent thief, Gestas, “the other on His left” (Mark 15:27), would “be thrust down to Hell” (Luke 10:15), showing that all of us, “the evil and the good, the just and the unjust” (Matthew 5:45), “are weighed in the balance” (Ecclesiasticus 21:25) of the Cross of Christ.

The ladder and the pincers beneath the base of the Cross represent the means of deposition by which Saint Joseph of Arimathea, “a rich man” (Matthew 27:57) who “begged for the body of Jesus” (Matthew 27:58; Luke 23:52), “took it down” (Luke 23:53), so that as in body He descended from the Cross, so in soul “He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth” (Ephesians 4:9), “by which also He went and preached unto the spirits in prison” (I Peter 3:19).

Through these instruments, “the Cross of Christ” (I Corinthians 1:17: Galatians 6:12; Philippians 3:18) became the “Tree of Life” (Genesis 2:9; 3:22, 24; Proverbs 3:18, 11:30; 13:12; 15:4; Revelation 2:7; 22:2,14), by which the Lord Jesus reified His words that, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die” (John 11:25-26).

hi there, i’m wondering if you could give me some advice ? one of my best friends just had a baby and although i’m so happy for her, sometimes it’s hard to be happy because she’s living my desires. i long to be married and a mom, but i’ve been single all my life. i think it’s hitting me harder because it feels like she’s now 2 steps ahead of me and it sucks :( i don’t want this to affect our friendship and i’m trying to trust in God’s timing, but some days i feel hopeless and sad. it’s not even that i’m jealous of her, i just wonder if it’s ever going to happen for me. i do want to truly be happy and excited for her and i feel selfish having these feelings

Hello, thank you for your message. It's okay, I think it's understandable and there are accounts in the Bible that outline what you are speaking of and you are not alone (1 Samuel 1, for example). It is a beautiful desire to want a spouse and a family. I think this is a universal experience for the most part, but there are exceptions of course for those who are contentedly single. Nevertheless, relationships are beautiful. For me, I feel grateful and content for my life and what I have; now more than ever. Because I'm grateful I'm okay with others' happiness, so I think sometimes being okay with what comes is equivalent to our own satisfaction, so to speak, with our portion. We all have moments and ups and downs though; we are warm-blooded and not robotic. Nevertheless, I would encourage digging into the Lord as your portion, praying those verses for your life and heart, beloved, and of course doing what you can to perhaps meet a wonderful godly suitor. Verses I really enjoy:

Psalms chapter 73

Be not circumscribed by your own boundaries, My child, or limited by your own understanding. In springtime the bud swells and grows on the plant when the life rises from the root. The buds open into the leaves that bring healing and produce the flowers whose fruit brings life to others. Even so, abide in Me as the True Vine, receiving the ministry of the Spirit and the life of the Word to share with those I bring you to. Recall, My child, that I did not receive the in-dwelling of the Spirit and the anointing of the Father to live to Myself in a quiet corner of the land; instead, I addressed the congregations of the faithful and spoke in the market-places of the cities to those who would listen. I did not remain in the obscurity of My “father's” carpentry shop but stepped out into the work My Father assigned Me. As you seek Me in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, My peace, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your heart and mind. With My peace bringing quiet and rest to your thoughts and emotions, you will be able to hear the soft, gentle whisper of My Spirit giving the direction and the leading for the next step. In trust and confidence you can move forward, not looking back, but setting your mind on the things that are above. Be sober of spirit and alert of mind, for not all to whom you speak will be in agreement with the words that I give. My words, since they are Truth, bring division and polarization because My Spirit, watching over My Word to perform it, convicts the hearers of sin and righteousness and judgment. Those who know the fear of God and who hunger for the righteousness of Christ will answer the call, but those who prefer the darkness will allow the adversary to influence their words and deeds to move against all who bear My name. Do not be afraid or allow yourself to be distracted, but stay fixed on the heavenly vision and calling you have received. As you persist in the work and endure to the end, you will find that though the way to the crown is through the cross, My grace is sufficient. Reach out, My dear one, beyond yourself, and meet Me where the paths of others cross yours.

May you know the fear of God and keep it before your eyes so that you may find the way of peace as you seek God and His understanding, lest ruin and misery mark your way as it does for those without hope. Romans 3

May you not boast of what you have done, or rehearse all you have accomplished, relying on your deeds to defend or reward you, but know and accept your own guilt, seeking with hope the righteousness from God, which comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe Him to be the Son of God. God's Charges Against Israel

1 Hear the word of יהוה, you children of Yisra’ĕl, for יהוה has a case against the inhabitants of the land: “For there is no truth or kindness or knowledge of Elohim in the land.

2 “Swearing, and lying, and murdering, and stealing, and committing adultery have increased. And bloodshed follows bloodshed.

3 “Therefore the land mourns, and everyone living there languishes, with the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens. And the fish of the sea are taken away.

4 “However, let no one strive or reprove another, for your people are like those striving with a priest.

5 “And you shall stumble in the day, and the prophet shall also stumble with you in the night. And I shall make your mother perish.

6 “My people have perished for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being priest for Me. Since you have forgotten the Torah of your Elohim, I also forget your children.

Line Upon Line Lesson 052: Not by Our Power

Exodus 2:11-12 - Now it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

In many movies about Moses, there is usually a scene where Moses is shocked to learn about his Israelite heritage.  He has to come to grips with the destiny God set before him.  While this story makes for good drama, is it really biblical?

Let’s read together Exodus 2:1-10 and Acts 7:20-22.

‭Contrary to popular belief, Moses grew up aware of his Israelite heritage.  When you read Exodus chapter 2, you find that Pharaoh’s daughter paid Moses’ mother to nurse him.  Moses’ mother raised him for a while before giving him to Pharaoh’s daughter.

Let’s read together Exodus 2:11-13 and Acts 7:23-29.

Moses was trying to show the Israelites he was going to deliver them from the Egyptians by his hand.  Perhaps Moses planned to lead a slave rebellion to overthrow the Egyptians.  

Let’s read together Exodus 2:14-15 and Acts 7:27-29.  

Unfortunately, the Israelites did not rally behind Moses.  Rather than lead an uprising, Moses ran away in fear of his life.  Moses thought he was going to be a revolutionary leader, but he ended up being a lonely exile.

What went wrong for Moses?

Let’s read together Psalm 73:26; Luke 9:54-55; John 15:5; and Philippians 3:4-7.

Moses was zealous for God, but he did not have the right spirit for God.  He tried to raise up the children of Israel on his own power.  Moses failed because he did not wait on the Lord.

Will you learn from Moses’ mistake and put your trust in Jesus first?

How many books are in your Bible?

Somehow I ended up on the Wikipedia page for Biblical canon and now my head hurts so I'm throwing all of you into the rabbit hole with me.

All Christian denominations share the same twenty-seven books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessolonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1 2 and 3 John, Jude, and Revelation. (The Orthodox Tewahedo Church has an additional eight books, but they are not considered part of the Bible itself, just the broader religious canon.)

However, the Old Testament is where it gets complicated.

The Tanakh contains twenty four books divided into three sections: The Torah, the Nevi'im, and the Ketuvim. The Torah contains Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The Nevi'im contains Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuh, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. The Ketuvim contains Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah, and Chronicles.

The Protestant Old Testament took the canon of the Tanakh, divided some books into two and added another book, making a total of 39 books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicle, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon (also called Song of Songs), Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuh, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Combing the Old and New Testaments, Protestant Bibles have 66 books.

The Catholic Bible includes the same 39 books as the Protestant Bible, with an additional seven books called the Deuterocanon: Tobit, Judith, Baruch, Sirach, 1 and 2 Maccabees, and Wisdom. Additionally, the books Esther and Daniel in the Catholic Bible contain more text than their Protestant counterparts. In total, the Catholic Bible has 73 books, 46 of those being the Old Testament.

The Greek Orthodox Bible includes the 46 books of the Catholic Old Testament, with an additional three: Prayer of Manasseh, 1 Esdras, and 3 Maccabees. Also, while the Protestant and Catholic Bibles contain 150 Psalms, the Greek Orthodox has 151. In total, the Greek Orthodox Bible contains 76 books.

The Slavonic Orthodox and Georgian Orthodox Bibles contain the same books as the Greek Orthodox.

The Armenian Apostolic Bible contains 50 Old Testament books: The 49 books in the Greek Orthodox Bible, and one other: 2 Esdras. This Bible contains Psalm 151. The Armenian Apostolic Bible contains 77 total books.

The Syrian Orthodox Old Testament has 48 books: All the books of the Catholic Old Testament with the additions of Prayer of Manasseh and 3 Maccabees. This Bible contains Psalm 151. The Syrian Orthodox Bible contains 75 total books.

The Coptic Orthodox Bible has 47 Old Testament books: All the books of the Catholic Old Testament with Prayer of Manasseh added. This Bible contains Psalm 151. The Coptic Orthodox Bible contains 74 books.

The Orthodox Tewahedo Bible is the canon for both the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. This Bible has the 39 Protestant Old Testament Books, and the additional books Jubilees, Enoch, Meqabyan, Ezra Sutuel, Tobith, and Judith. This Bible contains Psalm 151, and the books 2 Chronicles and Jeremiah are extended. The Orthodox Tewahedo Bible contains 73 books.

The Assyrian Church of the East has the 46 books of the Catholic Old Testament, plus two: Prayer of Manasseh and 3 Macabees. This Bible contains Psalm 151, and Baruch is extended. The Assyrian Church of the East Bible contains 75 books.

Impatience Comes from Comparisons

One of the worst things you can do to yourself is to compare yourself to others.

It will make you sad.

It will give you jitters.

It will make you feel like a failure.

Even if you think you are better than others, you'll end up becoming complacent.

Nothing good comes from comparisons.

That's what the Bible calls comparing yourself with others a lack of wisdom.

_"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise" (2 Corinthians 10:12)._

In fact, comparison breeds impatience.

The more you compare yourself with others, the more you are forced to take steps to measure up to them -- sometimes evil steps.

_"Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes" (Psalm 37:7)._

By all means, be inspired by others but don't compare yourself to them to your detriment.
