Ninth Street & Prospect Park West

Here are two images taken of a restaurant’s interior; the location is Ninth Street and Prospect Park West, Brooklyn. I believe the current building to be a replacement/newer structure, but am unsure.

Update: this from a Pratt alum, That's Raintrees Restaurant it was Lewnes Ice Cream before that - it was demolished for condos. Given this, I was able to get the (quite tragic) story here.

I may have been under the sway of Phil Perkis by this stage, as I recall that he espoused a “more is more” approach to packing the frame with lots of stuff. Perkis was a revered Pratt photography professor, well known in the New York photography world and beyond.

Of course, one may think that I’d also been looking at some Atget, who was enjoying much play at the MoMA right around that time.

The park, a building across Ninth, and a bus headed south can all be seen in the reflections on the plate-glass window and perhaps mirrored surfaces inside the establishment.

U.S. Post Office, Prospect Park West Station at 211 Prospect Park West. Today this building houses a pie shop.⠀ .⠀ Formerly Ninth Avenue, this street became Prospect Park West in 1895 when residents, sick of having their mail mis-delivered, petitioned the Board of Aldermen for a name change. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle described Brooklyn’s confusing lack of a street naming convention:⠀ .⠀ “Let us look at the case of Ninth avenue alone. There are in Brooklyn, beside an avenue bearing this number, a Ninth street, a North Ninth street, and a South Ninth street. In New York there are Ninth avenue, and East Ninth street and West ninth street. There are seven streets with the same number and distinguished from each other only by use of the word avenue instead of street or by prefixing one of the points of the compass.
