欧米における結婚習俗や婚礼は、ギリシャ・ローマ文化とキリスト教文化を基に発展を遂げてきたものであり、現代社会において世界中で一般的になっている婚礼慣習の多くも西洋の結婚史から由来する。起源はローマ帝国の時代にさかのぼる。ヨーロッパにキリスト教が普及すると、結婚式は教会で行なわれるようになり、その際に王侯貴族の花嫁が婚姻儀礼用に着用した衣装がウェディングドレスの始まりであった。中世では青、赤、緑の絹やベルベットの布地を基調に金糸・銀糸の刺繍の縫い取りがあるものが着られた。この婚礼衣装は、花嫁の家の経済力や社会的な地位などを誇示することを目的としたため非常に豪華なものであった。また、しばしば家紋の刺繍も入っていた。16世紀末になると、スペイン宮廷での流行を背景に黒や暗色がウェディングドレスの色として流行した。この色は特に中産階級の間でもその手入れのし易さと婚礼以外の祝祭日での着用が可能であることから積極的に取り入れられ、20世紀初頭にいたるまで広く着られた。1900年ごろには、黒のドレスに白いベールというスタイルも流行した。白いドレスはすでに史料上17世紀末までさかのぼることができるが、18世紀後半以降、特に19世紀に入ってヴィクトリア女王の結婚衣裳をきっかけに急速に普及したとされる。
元来、世界の諸民族・諸文化には独自の結婚装束があったが、白人主流派の先進国であるアングロサクソン諸国の文化の世界的拡散によりウェディングドレスが広く普及し、従来のものを圧倒している例も見られる。例えば、東アジア文化圏においては白は死装束の色であり、本来は忌み嫌われ慶事には避けられたが、西洋文化の流入と共に(従来から白無垢が用いられていた)日本はもちろん、韓国・中国・台湾などでも純白のウェディングドレスが好まれるようになっている。
日本では、1873年に長崎で磯部於平(いそべ おつね)という女性が中国人と結婚した際に初めてウェディングドレスを着用した。2年後に森有礼も西洋式の結婚式を行なったが、当時の日本にはウェディングドレスはなく、舶来品であった。その後も洋式の結婚式はごく一部の著名人に限られた。一般向けとしては、1929年の婦人雑誌に洋装花嫁としてウェディングドレスを紹介する記事が出たのを嚆矢とするが、当時の結婚式は神前式・人前式が多数であり、普及しなかった。第二次世界大戦後はアメリカ文化の流入で一般にも知られるようになったが、ウェディングドレスの絶対数が少なく、洋装での挙式を受け入れる体制が不充分だったこともあり、1960年頃でもウェディングドレスの利用者は全体の3%程度であった。元々ウエディングドレスは欧米人の立体的な体型に合わせて作られたものであったが、西洋白人文化への根強い憧憬、服装をはじめとする生活様式の洋風化、また和装の花嫁衣装に比べて廉価で着用も容易であるなどの利点があり、一方で森英恵・桂由美・エマ理永(旧名松居エリ)・西村有紀子・秦清子・高山尚子など国際感覚の卓越したファッションデザイナーにより供給側の充実も図られ、1960年代後半から1980年代にかけて日本でも急速に普及し、和装を圧倒し、現在では花嫁衣装の主流を占めるに至った。1974年には、フランスのプロニプシア(PRONUPTIA PARIS)などの海外ウェディングドレスブランドも参入した。

The song: At first listen, Kleenex could be heard as a straightforward criticism of consumerism and how we get used to see the same brands every day, but it tells more than that. It also tells a person’s life and how they grow up with different brands, Kleenex being the most recurrent one as the name of the brand almost replaced the use of the term tissue in french vocabulary. The first verse is about the character’s childhood which references many brands related to child toys and baby care products, Kleenex being used during tantrums. Wearing Pampers diapers and playing with Fisher Price toys during toddlerhood, the baby later grows into a child and is used to play Nintendo games, collect Panini stickers and going to school with Oxford notebooks. The end of the verse also portrays a scene where the child runs with Kicker shoes and gets hurt, resulting in crying and drying the tears with Kleenex. The chorus then talks about how the different brands and logos get used to our daily lives and how we use them throughout life. In the second verse, the child grows into adolescence and starts using various products such as Mennen for shaving and Biactol for getting rid of acnea. Faithful to the events of puberty (and also as a reference to Oldelaf’s humor), Kleenex are used for masturbation sessions. This part of song about teenagehood also shows how the song could age badly in the future, as the iPod and Nokia products are nearly defunct nowadays and won’t play a big role in upcoming generations (In that way, the whole song could be about the life of someone born during the 1990s). The second part of the verse portrays a transition from puberty to young adulthood. The character has to move out, gets used to eating Panzani pasta products but also starts drinking. After binging out, the character throws up in a Jacob Delafon toilet and wipes it up with Kleenex. We’ve moved on to adulthood in the third verse. Thanks to the website Meetic, our character has met a significant other. A date is organised at the Bistro Romain (a parisian restaurant) but unfortunately, their Durex condom break out while having sex on a Bultex bed and Kleenex is used for cleaning up the mess. A wedding is later arranged and the couple manages to afford a house thanks to the Guy Hoquet Real Estate agency. It is also suggested in this first part of the verse that after handling all the paperwork for the family, the characters wipe their sweat off with Kleenex. The second part of the verse talks about how the character tries to manage his life as a parent. Taking Juvamine vitamins (a french pharmaceutic brand known for its slogan “Si Juvabien c’est Juvamine”) as well as Lexomil for depression, the parents also take care of their children by bringing them to Jouéclub toy stores and Disneyland, on top of buying a Scenic car for the family, more space in their house. In this context, Kleenex is probably used during breakdowns, seeing the difficulties of parenting. The song ends with the elderhood and the death of our character in the fourth verse. Living a sedentary life and getting accustomed to watching TV (France 3 is a channel known for its senior-centered programs), the activities are now much more trivial (going to Jardiland for getting gardening products, buying Sheba food for pets and eating Werther’s caramel which are known for their commercial showing a grandfather). Just like in the first verse, Pampers and Bledina are mentioned, showing how the old parent also takes care of grandchildren now (or the Pampers could reference urine leakage during old age). Finally, our character dies and is buried thanks to the PFG (A funeral service company) and Kleenex are used by the family and friends crying at the ceremony.
