Christmas pudding [...] [is] a boiled mass of suet - a raw, hard animal fat [...] often replaced with a vegetarian alternative - as well as flour and dried fruits that is often soaked in alcohol and set alight. [...] [I]t is a legacy of the British Empire with ingredients from around the globe it once dominated [...].
Christmas pudding is a relatively recent concoction of two older, at least medieval, dishes. [...] “Figgy pudding,” immortalized in the “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” carol, appeared in the written record by the 14th century. [...] During the 18th century, the two ["plum pottage" and "figgy pudding"] crossed to become the more familiar plum pudding – a steamed pudding packed with the ingredients of the rapidly growing British Empire of rule and trade. The key was less a new form of cookery than the availability of once-luxury ingredients, including French brandy, raisins from the Mediterranean, and citrus from the Caribbean.
Few things had become more affordable than cane sugar which, owing to the labors of millions of enslaved Africans, could be found in the poorest and remotest of British households by mid-century. Cheap sugar, combined with wider availability of other sweet ingredients like citrus and dried fruits, made plum pudding an iconically British celebratory treat, albeit not yet exclusively associated with Christmas.
Such was its popularity that English satirist James Gillray made it the centerpiece of one of his famous cartoons, depicting Napoleon Bonaparte and the British prime minister carving the world in pudding form.
In line with other modern Christmas celebrations, the Victorians took the plum pudding and redefined it [...], making it the “Christmas pudding.” In his 1843 internationally celebrated “A Christmas Carol,” Charles Dickens venerated the dish as the idealized center of any family’s Christmas feast [...].
Three years later, Queen Victoria’s chef published her favored recipe, making Christmas pudding, like the Christmas tree, the aspiration of families across Britain.
Christmas pudding owed much of its lasting appeal to its socioeconomic accessibility. Victoria’s recipe, which became a classic, included candied citrus peel, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemons, cloves, brandy and a small mountain of raisins and currants – all affordable treats for the middle class. Those with less means could either opt for lesser amounts or substitutions [...]. Eliza Acton, a leading cookbook author of the day who helped to rebrand plum pudding as Christmas pudding, offered a particularly frugal recipe that relied on potatoes and carrots. [...] The high alcohol content gave the puddings a shelf life of a year or more, allowing them to be sent even to the empire’s frontiers during Victoria’s reign [...].
---
In the 1920s, the British Women’s Patriotic League heavily promoted it – calling it “Empire Pudding” in a global marketing campaign. They praised it as emblem of the empire that should be made from the ingredients of Britain’s colonies and possessions: dried fruits from Australia and South Africa, cinnamon from Ceylon, spices from India and Jamaican rum in place of French brandy.
Press coverage of London’s 1926 Empire Day celebrations featured the empire’s representatives pouring the ingredients into a ceremonial mixing bowl and collectively stirring it.
The following year, the Empire Marketing Board received King George V’s permission to promote the royal recipe, which had all the appropriate empire-sourced ingredients. Such promotional recipes and the mass production of puddings from iconic grocery stores like [Sains-bury's] in the 1920s combined to place Christmas puddings on the tables [...].

I thought it might be fun to list "Best cultures for", imo, BTW, doesn't include SK in most cases.
So using my Anthro degree for something. This is Academic interest. I'm only giving the loose reasons why. I'm not particularly promoting fetishization here. I'm saying, do the research into this specific culture for this specific cultural aspect. rather than blind worship.
Agriculture
Of the three major regions, (West Asia, Southern China-ish, Meso America/Northern South America) hands down, The Americas.
I mean, if you look at the genetics and origin of the potato, that itself is super impressive. Through domestication alone, they managed to make the potato grow in all environments, AND changed the amount of genes the potato has. !@#$ What? Really? And then you have things like Amaranth, corn, squash, beans of different kinds, quinoa, tomatoes which is related to nightshade, which is used more than eggplant worldwide, and Sweet Potatoes which they gave to Polynesians. Also single handedly through the Potato and Sweet Potato saved China, Korea, Ireland, and several other places from famine, thus also helping to end the slavery cycle in Korea, China and Japan. I mean... who are you going to rank the highest in that case?
Second place ranking I have to give to Western Asia. Daaaaamn, you have wheat, oats, barley, sheep, goats, cows, horses (supposedly), pigs. That's pretty impressive.
Third place Southern China—rice production, most of the world's commercial flowers, soybeans, a lot of the fruits including citrus. You also get honey.
Honorable mention to South Asia for Chickens. (Indonesia and India specifically)
Despite this, apples are my favorite fruit. lol I need to eat a Courtland apple please. I can eat them by the bushel.
Sea navigation
Hands down, Polynesians, beats the pants off of everyone else by a nautical league. When you can feel sea currents with your hands, be able to get your people first to the South Pacific from China, and then navigate ALLLLL the way to the Americas and beat Europeans, Yes, definitely they get the crown several times over. I mean... think hard about it. When you memorize stick charts, casually and then don't have them at sea and sometimes your tattoos are only brief reminders, FLOORED.
Make Europeans in the same time period look terrible.
House design
I'm looking at passive solar, specifically rather than aesthetics. For me, this is kinda toss up. Indigenous peoples rocked it pretty hard, especially in the South West US into Mexico region. They were exceptionally good at regulating air flow. But Koreans invented underfloor heating. And Chinese figured out Feng Shui which is just Passive solar+ a bunch of other stuff that's practical. (Such as your bathroom shouldn't be above your kitchen). But I have to admit I also admire some of the Indian Passive solar efforts (subcontinent). This one is hard to decide. But if you're researching, I'd look there.
Gender
My favorite to point to is Bugis people of Indonesia. 5 different genders. Freaking awesome. Of course it's a bit disciplined these days by the government, but it's worth investigating.
As I wrote before East Asian gender systems of the past were often more fluid and flexible and still are compared to European ideologues.
Clothing?
No one has impressed me that much, tbh. It's a pick and choose. I can choose the most impractical, but not the one that wins my heart for inventiveness.
Crakows, though, crack me up every single last time. Especially for the Phallic nature and that they were associated with men. But that's on the impractical list. That's also why I submitted it for review on History Hit's fashion list. I haven't gotten over it since I first saw it, I think it was on a Dan Snow documentary about British kings. I mean look at them and resist laughing your butt off.
Religion
I personally think that real Voudoun is much cooler than what's in the movies, which is really racist 98% of the time. It is a Synchronized religion, and it is Christian-based in some ways, but c'mon, look it up and be impressed.
BTW, I really dislike the conflation of zombies with Voudou, granted as an outsider, since it belongs to Bokor and is a warning against *becoming a slave* not about white people trying to shoot zombies with grey and darker faces because OMG, slave uprising psychology.
Zonbis, are cooler than zombies since it's about overcoming and resisting masters, rather than about masters mass killing their slaves, which is what the later meaning seems to say. Ad Zombie movies are at their best when they symbolically get the original concept and meaning. So like becoming a work drone.
^^ I still have a soft spot for Muism as a Korean, but ya know, Korean. I lean towards liking shamanism, probably because of the historical acceptance of LGBTQIA and disability.
Shamanism is also appealing in some ways because often shamanism says that if everything in your life is going wrong, then that might be a sign of powers or spirits calling to you, rather than saying in the old Christian ideology that you've sinned deeply, so you need to repent.
But this is usually not what people are asking about when they are thinking about religions. They usually want the polytheistic, Jade Emperor, Greek, Roman, Egyptians, Norse route. Or Monotheism. Kinda dull, really. Where are the other types in fiction. I mean, Druids?
Give me some totemism for once.
Government System
Look up Wigan Council. I might also be biased towards it because of Gaya, but it's a way to play with things and also allow for more LGBTQIA royalty. Royalty without autocracy?
Inventions?
Hands down, no doubt, Islamic Empire. I mean, when you have Automatons without electricity, you're winning without question. When your people are inventing surgery, calculating the size of the Earth, allowing women to read, learn and write, inventing the lens, which is the cornerstone of so many inventions, and you got Europe's Bacon by inventing the Scientific Method first, historical crush does't cut it. I mean, when you can calculate a pointed arch, do geometric mosaics with mathematical principles, I am floored beyond reason.
Conclusion
This isn't to say I'm not impressed by specific things from other cultures as well, but this is broad strokes. Vedanta Hinduism, for me, is impressive from India. And I really like the practicality of Hanbok. (Why hanbok over hanfu is a long, long post) And I've raved over kimchi before multiple, multiple times, more than you know (quora... I think I have the most answers and I also answer with the food science of Kimchi down to the bacteria.) BTW, dumplings are damned clever.
What are your favorite culture for specific things from those cultures? Would you choose different cultures for each of these things? If so, why? What impressive things have I missed that have floored you?

BRICS, an intergovernmental economic-political organization, comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Originally it was constituted to assist in the identification and highlighting of investment opportunities. The grouping has eventually evolved into an actual geopolitical bloc, with their governments meeting annually aimed at coordinating multilateral policies through formal Summits since 2009. Currently, bilateral relations among BRICS are conducted mainly based on non-interference, equality, and mutual benefit.
It may be recalled that the founding countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China held the first Summit in Yekaterinburg in 2009, with South Africa joining the bloc a year later. Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates joined the organization on 1 January 2024. Saudi Arabia has not joined officially as yet, but participates in the Organization’s activities as an invited nation.
One needs to understand the importance of this Group through some statistics. Combined, the BRICS members encompass about 30% of the world's land surface and 45% of the global population. South Africa has the largest economy in Africa whereas Brazil, Russia, India, and China are among the world's ten largest countries by population, area, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and also through purchasing power parity (PPP). All five initial member states are also Members of the G20, with a combined nominal GDP of US Dollar 28 trillion which amounts to about 27% of the Gross World Product, and a total GDP (PPP) of around US Dollar 57 trillion (33% of global GDP PPP), and an estimated US Dollar 4.5 trillion in combined foreign reserves (as of 2018).
The BRICS countries are considered as the foremost geopolitical rival to the G7 Bloc comprising the leading advanced economies, implementing competing initiatives such as the New Development Bank, the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement. These data have originated from the BRICS Joint Statistical Publication. All these details have led to BRICS receiving both praise and criticism from numerous commentators.
I am referring to the geo-political denotations of BRICS in this article to draw attention to the fact that the next BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, October 22 to 24. Significantly, during its BRICS Presidency this year, Russia has said it will focus on "promoting the entire range of partnership and cooperation within the framework of the association on three key tracks – politics and security, the economy and finance, and cultural and humanitarian ties. All of these have particular connotations.

This June, approximately 150 motorcycles will thunder down Route 9W in Saugerties, New York, for Ryan’s Ride for Recovery. Organized by Vince Kelder and his family, the barbecue and raffle will raise money to support their sober-living facility and honor their son who tragically died from a heroin overdose in 2015 after a years-long drug addiction.
The Kelders established Raising Your Awareness about Narcotics (RYAN) to help others struggling with substance-use disorder. For years, the organization has relied on Eventbrite, an event management and ticketing website, to arrange its events. This year, however, alongside listings for Ryan’s Ride and other addiction recovery events, Eventbrite surfaced listings peddling illegal sales of prescription drugs like Xanax, Valium, and oxycodone.
“It’s criminal,” Vince Kelder says. “They’re preying on people trying to get their lives back together.”
Eventbrite prohibits listings dedicated to selling illegal substances on its platform. It’s one of the 16 categories of content the company’s policies restrict its users from posting. But a WIRED investigation found more than 7,400 events published on the platform that appeared to violate one or more of these terms.
Among these listings were pages claiming to sell fentanyl powder “without a prescription,” accounts pushing the sale of Social Security numbers, and pages offering a “wild night with independent escorts” in India. Some linked to sites offering such wares as Gmail accounts, Google reviews (positive and negative), and TikTok and Instagram likes and followers, among other services.
At least 64 of the event listings advertising drugs included links to online pharmacies that the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy have flagged as untrustworthy or unsafe. Amanda Hils, a spokesperson for the US Food and Drug Administration, says the agency does not comment on individual cases without a thorough review, but broadly some online pharmacies that appear to look legitimate may be “operating illegally and selling medicines that can be dangerous or even deadly.”
Eventbrite didn’t just publish these user-generated event listings; its algorithms appeared to actively recommend them to people through simple search queries or in “related events”—a section at the bottom of an event’s page showing users similar events they might be interested in. As well as posts selling illegal prescription drugs in search results appearing next to the RYAN event, a search for “opioid” in the United States showed Eventbrite’s recommendation algorithm suggesting a conference for opioid treatment practitioners between two listings for ordering oxycodone.
Robin Pugh, the executive director of nonprofit cybercrime fighting organization Intelligence for Good, which first alerted WIRED to some of the listings, says it is quick and easy to identify the illicit posts on Eventbrite and that other websites that allow “user-generated content” are also plagued by scammers uploading posts in similar ways.
“I’m confident Eventbrite does not want to be hosting this on their platform—I’m pretty sure that that is not what they had in mind,” Pugh says. “It shows that a lot of the platforms that haven’t traditionally thought of themselves as being part of the threatscape have no idea how to monitor the content on their platform.”
“Listings like these do not have a home on Eventbrite,” Chris Adams, the company’s head of platform product, tells WIRED in a statement. “This is a spam attack, coordinated by a few bad actors attempting to draw audiences to third-party sites.” Adams says Eventbrite is taking the issue “very seriously” and the “identified illegal and illicit activity has been removed.”
Eventbrite’s help center says it uses a “combination of tools and processes” to detect content that goes against its rules. These include, its pages say, using machine learning to proactively detect content, a “rules-based” system, responding to reports from users, and human reviews.
“Our investigation determined this is abnormal activity, a misuse of the Eventbrite platform, and based on our findings, Eventbrite did not profit from these listings, and there have been no finalized ticket purchases identified,” Adams says.
Eventbrite appears to have removed most, if not all, of the illicit listings that WIRED identified after we alerted the company to the issue. Because of the way WIRED collected the data, however, the thousands of listings found on Eventbrite are likely the tip of the iceberg. WIRED obtained the data used for its analysis by collecting listings Eventbrite deemed were “related” to hundreds of events found through simple keyword searches. These keyword searches and their related events likely do not capture the entirety of illicit events published on the platform.
Even within this limited dataset, our analysis found that, on average, 169 illicit events have been published daily.
The vast majority of the listings WIRED found used common tactics, whether they pushed drugs, escort services, or online account details. The spammy pages were often listed as online “events.” The events do not actually happen but rather act as a way for those posting them to publish their activities online. Most of them were free; however, some tried to charge people to “attend” through Eventbrite. It is not clear whether anyone has paid for any of the events.
Searching for various controlled substances, such as brand-name opioids, brought up results on Eventbrite. These “events” mostly pushed people away from the platform to online pharmacy websites, which say people can buy medicines without prescriptions.
John Hertig, an associate professor at Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, says there are thousands of online pharmacies operating at any time and that the vast majority of them are illegal—with websites often selling drugs not approved by the FDA or failing to be licensed in the country where they are selling into.
“The other major issue that we see in terms of illegality is not requiring a prescription,” Hertig says. “You see a lot of this: ‘easy, hassle free, simple process, no doctor needed.’ That's illegal.” Typically accounts claiming to sell medicines through non-official platforms, such as those on Eventbrite, will not be doing so legitimately, Hertig says, and that brings risks around whether what they are selling is safe.
As well as websites, those claiming to sell illicit services on Eventbrite pushed people to chat privately on WhatsApp or Telegram. Our analysis identified as many as 60 unique Telegram accounts and 65 WhatsApp numbers in the dataset. WhatsApp spokesperson Joshua Breckman says the platform encourages users to report suspicious activity and that it will respond to valid law enforcement requests. Telegram did not respond to a request for comment.
“I use Eventbrite to show people what services I sell,” the person behind one account, going by the username Usa Best Vcc, tells WIRED in a Telegram chat. “Eventbrite helps 100% in getting my services to people.” The account, which claims to sell social media accounts and banking accounts and lists more than a dozen apps, has had its Telegram handle listed on more than 200 Eventbrite pages, according to search engine results. It also has its own website, Gmail address, Skype, and WhatsApp accounts.
Similarly, one Indian WhatsApp number appeared on 123 almost identical listings on Eventbrite. The telephone number is linked to two other numbers and a website that appears to offer escort services. All three numbers replied to messages and asked what “area” or “location” a WIRED reporter was in. One number sent a series of photographs of women and a proposed list of prices for their services.
Those behind the accounts posting to Eventbrite likely have not just singled out the platform; many also have presences across other websites and services where people can upload their own content. They often include short summaries, which are filled with keywords that could help them appear higher in search results.
For instance, the Usa Best Vcc seller also has posts on Pinterest, Medium, Deviant Art, and more. The Indian WhatsApp number also appears on hiking website AllTrails, an open data website from Public Health Scotland, Medium, and others. Pinterest spokesperson Ivy Choi says the company deleted the account and works quickly to remove content that violates its policies when it detects them. AllTrails declined to comment, and other organizations did not respond to a request for comment.
“Any site that allows a user to upload their own content will find these cyber criminals advertising, scamming, or using the site for their personal gain,” says Rachel Tobac, the cofounder and CEO of SocialProof security. “Cybercriminals leverage the power of user-generated content (their own drug advertisement) to sell to folks who are searching for what they have to sell.”
Pugh, from Intelligence for Good, says those uploading the posts to multiple platforms may be using automated tools to do so, and they are not manually entering all their details time and time again. “You definitely can see a difference in some of the more sophisticated actors who have clearly used some SEO-manipulation tools,” Pugh says. Some, she says, will use emoji or slang terms to avoid automatic content moderation that platforms put in place.
“Any platform that is inviting their user community to host freely has to be aware that their platform can be used for reasons that were never intended,” Pugh adds. “If you're putting a platform out there and inviting the community to participate, you have a responsibility to keep it safe.”

Embracing Diversity: Nina Davuluri against the backdrop of Fair & Lovely
I remember this vividly: in 2013, Nina Davuluri, an American woman of Indian descent, made headlines and history as she was crowned Miss America. Her victory was a moment of pride and celebration for many, especially those who saw in her win a broader acceptance of diverse beauty standards in America. However, the reaction to her crowning was not universally positive. Davuluri faced a barrage of racist backlash on social media, with some calling her un-American, and others linking her to terrorism. This stark response highlighted a deep-seated issue with race and beauty standards prevalent not only in America but also in other parts of the world, including India.
All I could feel was joy that a dark-skinned woman, of the same shade as me, was able to take such a prominent stage.
Parallel to this scenario in the United States is the ongoing controversy surrounding Fair & Lovely, a skin-lightening cream widely popular in India and other South Asian countries. Marketed by Hindustan Unilever, Fair & Lovely has been criticized for promoting fairness as a preferred aesthetic, implying that lighter skin is somehow better than darker skin tones. This message resonates with deep historical and cultural biases that associate skin color with status, beauty, and personal success. Many commentators even said that Nina Davuluri would not have been able to win the parallel Miss India competition because she was "too dark."
The Cultural Impact of Fair & Lovely
For decades, Fair & Lovely has dominated the skin-lightening market by promoting the idea that fairness leads to success and love. The brand's advertisements traditionally showcased transformational stories where a darker-skinned woman applies the cream and subsequently achieves her dreams—be it career success, marriage, or social approval. This narrative taps into the societal pressures and prejudices that exist around colorism—a form of discrimination based on skin color that is not just prevalent in India but globally.
The brand's influence is so pervasive that it has shaped beauty standards across generations, often marginalizing those who do not fit the 'fair skin ideal.' The impact of such branding is profound, affecting women's self-esteem and social dynamics. However, the narrative around beauty and fairness is changing, driven by social campaigns and changing consumer awareness about the implications of such products.
Changing Tides: Response and Responsibility
The backlash against Nina Davuluri in America and the criticisms of Fair & Lovely in India highlight a global need to reevaluate beauty standards. These events urge brands and societies to reflect on the messages they endorse and the values they propagate. In response to growing criticism, Fair & Lovely announced in 2020 that it would rebrand to "Glow & Lovely" and changed its advertising approach to emphasize skin health over fairness. This decision marks a significant shift in how beauty products are marketed, reflecting a more inclusive and diverse understanding of beauty.
Moreover, the response to Davuluri's crowning and her handling of the criticism also illustrates the resilience and grace with which individuals can confront entrenched stereotypes and advocate for a more inclusive vision of beauty. As the first Miss America of Indian descent, Davuluri used her platform to speak out against racism and promote diversity and cultural understanding, embodying the change she hopes to see in society.
Looking Forward: A Call for Inclusivity
The discussions around Fair & Lovely and Nina Davuluri serve as a reminder of the power of representation and the importance of inclusive beauty standards. They challenge individuals and corporations alike to think critically about the messages they support and the impact these messages have on individual identity and societal values.
As consumers become more conscious and vocal, brands must listen and adapt, not just for the sake of profitability but to foster a more equitable society. It's time for all stakeholders—corporations, consumers, and communities—to embrace a broader, more inclusive definition of beauty that celebrates diversity and empowers all individuals, regardless of the color of their skin.

In an era of escalating stress and sedentary lifestyles, the holistic approach of these ancient practices offers a beacon of hope in the management of diabetes. Through targeted postures, breathwork, and meditation, yoga unfolds its therapeutic benefits, promoting insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar levels. Meanwhile, Ayurveda, with its personalized approach, delves into herbal remedies, dietary modifications, and lifestyle recommendations to restore the body's balance and vitality. As we delve into the nexus of these time-honored practices and the contemporary understanding of diabetes, discover how their integration can empower individuals to embark on a transformative journey towards holistic well-being. Join us as we unravel the compelling synergy between ancient traditions and modern diabetes management, offering a roadmap for self-healing from within.
Understanding Diabetes and its Management
Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood. It can result from inadequate insulin production, ineffective use of insulin, or both. The management of diabetes involves controlling blood sugar levels to prevent complications. Conventional treatments often include medication, insulin injections, and dietary modifications. However, the holistic approach of yoga and Ayurveda offers complementary avenues for managing diabetes. By understanding the underlying causes and impacts of diabetes, individuals can make informed choices about incorporating these ancient practices into their lifestyle.
Yoga and Ayurveda offer a holistic perspective on diabetes, considering the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Rather than simply treating the symptoms, they address the root causes of imbalance, aiming to restore harmony and well-being. As we delve deeper into the specific practices and principles of yoga and Ayurveda, we will uncover their profound potential in transforming the lives of those grappling with diabetes.
Yoga Practices for Diabetes Management
Yoga, an ancient practice originating in India, encompasses a diverse range of techniques designed to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. When tailored for diabetes management, yoga practices can play a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and enhancing overall health. Asanas, or yoga postures, are a fundamental aspect of yoga practice. Specific asanas, such as the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar), the Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana), and the Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana), have been found to be particularly beneficial for individuals with diabetes.
In addition to asanas, pranayama, or breath control techniques, are integral to yoga practice. Deep breathing exercises, such as Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) and Kapalbhati (skull shining breath), can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce stress levels, both of which are essential for managing diabetes. Furthermore, meditation and relaxation techniques in yoga can alleviate the psychological and emotional stress associated with diabetes, promoting a sense of calm and balance.
Ayurvedic Approach to Diabetes
Ayurveda, often referred to as the "science of life," is an ancient system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Central to Ayurveda is the concept of individual constitution, or dosha, which influences one's physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. In the context of diabetes, Ayurveda emphasizes the balance of the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – to manage the condition effectively. Ayurvedic treatments for diabetes typically involve a combination of herbal remedies, dietary modifications, and lifestyle recommendations tailored to an individual's doshic constitution.
Herbs such as bitter melon (Momordica charantia), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) are commonly used in Ayurveda to regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Additionally, dietary guidelines in Ayurveda emphasize the consumption of whole foods, such as whole grains, legumes, and fresh vegetables, while minimizing the intake of processed and sugary foods. Lifestyle modifications, including stress-reducing practices, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, are also integral to the Ayurvedic approach to managing diabetes.
Benefits of Yoga and Ayurveda for Diabetes
The integration of yoga and Ayurveda into diabetes management offers a myriad of benefits beyond the regulation of blood sugar levels. These ancient practices promote overall well-being by addressing the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of health. Yoga and Ayurveda can enhance insulin sensitivity, promote weight management, reduce inflammation, and improve cardiovascular health – all of which are crucial considerations for individuals with diabetes.
Moreover, the holistic nature of yoga and Ayurveda fosters a sense of empowerment and self-awareness, allowing individuals to develop a deeper understanding of their bodies and the factors influencing their health. By incorporating these practices into their daily routine, individuals can cultivate resilience, balance, and vitality, ultimately enhancing their ability to manage diabetes effectively and lead a fulfilling life.
Incorporating Yoga and Ayurveda into Daily Routine
The integration of yoga and Ayurveda into daily routines can be a transformative endeavor for individuals seeking to manage diabetes holistically. Establishing a regular yoga practice, even if it involves just a few minutes of gentle stretching and breathing exercises each day, can yield significant benefits. Similarly, incorporating Ayurvedic dietary principles, such as mindful eating, balanced meals, and the inclusion of diabetes-friendly herbs and spices, can contribute to better blood sugar control and overall health.
Furthermore, the incorporation of mindfulness and stress-reducing techniques, such as meditation and relaxation exercises, can help individuals develop resilience in the face of the challenges posed by diabetes. By making these practices a part of their daily routine, individuals can experience a profound shift in their well-being, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-healing from within.
Dietary Recommendations in Ayurveda for Diabetes
Diet plays a pivotal role in the management of diabetes, and Ayurveda offers valuable insights into dietary recommendations tailored to individual constitutions. The emphasis on whole, unprocessed foods, as well as the inclusion of specific herbs and spices, can contribute to better blood sugar control and overall health. In Ayurveda, dietary guidelines for diabetes revolve around balancing the doshas, promoting digestion, and managing excess sugar in the body.

Summary:
"One Belt, One Road: Revisiting Xuanzang Road" is a documentary jointly directed by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Culture, with Liu Xiaolingtong as the chief director. The film was officially released on April 27 at the Yuhua Palace Scenic Area.
Power on. The 1986 version of "Journey to the West" is a classic memory of generations of Chinese people. Due to financial problems, the film did not actually go to the "Western Heaven" in India to learn from the real world during the filming. This left a huge regret for the crew and the audience. Today, thirty years later, the artists will embark on Xuanzang's journey to the West to learn Buddhist scriptures together again, allowing everyone to appreciate the beauty of India and experience the wonders of Buddhism. It's not only responded to the country's "One Belt, One Road," but a call to spread Chinese traditional culture and Journey to the West culture, and also marked the completion of the 86 edition of "Journey to the West" and fulfilled the "Journey to the West dream" of global audiences

Reflecting on the case and the marketing strategies of Corona and Heineken reveals a tale of two varied approaches, each with its unique implications in the competitive landscape of the beer market.
As I read the case- I kept comparing the dynamic nature of advertising and selling beer in the US. Having grown up in India- the nature of ads from alcohol companies were very different. My reflection highlights some of the areas where regulatory frameworks lead to innovative marketing tactics such as surrogate advertising.
Finally- I could not help but wonder what the impact of the pandemic was on a brand like Corona (for obvious reasons). I remember listening to a podcast back in the day about the ultimate positive effect the pandemic had on beer consumption in the US, and my final point covers that.
Corona and Heineken's Divergent Paths Corona’s growth in the U.S. market, challenging Heineken's long-standing dominance, serves as an example of how brand imagery and lifestyle alignment can reshape market dynamics. While Heineken has promoted its brand as a premium quality, heritage, and sophisticated one, Corona adopted a different strategy. Its marketing campaigns evoked a sense of relaxation, escapism, and the simple pleasures of life, epitomized by the iconic image of a lime-wedged bottle on a sun-drenched beach.
The Indian Context: Surrogate Marketing Turning to the Indian market, where direct advertising of alcoholic beverages is prohibited, brands have resorted to surrogate marketing to make their presence felt in the consumers' minds. Companies promote products that share the brand name with the alcoholic beverage, such as music CDs, water, or even airlines, thereby maintaining brand recall.
For long, some of the funniest and most memorable ads, usually came from such brands. This strategy, while requiring creativity and indirect messaging, highlights the complex interplay between regulatory environments and marketing innovation, allowing brands to build a presence in a market with strict advertising restrictions. (Alcohol brand selling "Music CDs": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zhozmQCDYg&pp=ygUdbWVuIHdpbGwgYmUgbWVuIGltcGVyaWFsIGJsdWU%3D)
Lately, many brands have launched zero-alcohol products, using these as surrogates to gain market popularity. Heineken was definitely the winner in the Indian market – from my recollection, I never saw a Corona ad.
Any publicity is good publicity? - True for Corona!
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges particularly for a brand like Corona, given the unfortunate name association. Despite initial setbacks and market confusion (with rumors rife with association to the virus), Corona's marketing strategy demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Research suggested that the brand's visibility and consumer loyalty contributed to this growth, with each new COVID-19 case seemingly boosting Corona's sales by $5.30 weekly compared to other major beer brands. The article mentioned that Corona beer gained "accidental popularity" due to its name's association with the coronavirus, driving increased attention and sales during the pandemic. Organizing engaging quizzes and contests to captivate and entertain the audience
Engaging in contests and competitions online stands out as a highly effective method for boosting audience participation. These activities strike a perfect balance between offering low risk and promising high rewards. Contests consistently ignite excitement and generate buzz on social networking sites, providing a significant advantage when it comes to promoting a film. For example, ahead of the release of the movie ‘Mary Kom,’ the producers orchestrated a pre-launch contest on Twitter to promote the film. In this captivating contest, the fortunate winner had the incredible opportunity to meet Priyanka Chopra and enjoy a screening of the movie alongside her. This approach represents one of the most ingenious advertising strategies employed for blockbuster films.
Engaging actively during press conferences
Press conferences represent one of the most influential tools for generating publicity. They play a crucial role in shaping the audience’s perception of a film. During these events, the press conducts interviews with key actors and directors involved in the movie. The primary challenge lies in skillfully and effectively engaging with the press. In addition to journalists and media outlets, social media influencers and fans are also invited to attend these gatherings. Another effective marketing strategy involves organizing mini-press junkets in major cities to promote the film. This approach allows fans to interact directly with the film’s star cast, creating a more engaging and personal experience.
Showcasing Of Trailers
Movie trailers are essential in sparking excitement among the general public for an upcoming film. They are distributed through various channels, such as television, YouTube, and social media platforms. Additionally, you can catch them on the big screen during intermissions or before the main feature begins when you visit the theaters. For avid movie enthusiasts, these trailers are not only entertaining but also intriguing. They serve their purpose effectively by generating anticipation. Many people still prefer to catch a movie on its opening day, and these trailers play a vital role in spreading the word and igniting excitement throughout the masses. Shared Beauty Standards in Bollywood and Korean Celebrities: A Comparative Analysis
The world of entertainment has an undeniable influence on shaping societal beauty standards. Two powerhouse industries, Bollywood in India and the Korean entertainment industry, have garnered global acclaim and have significantly impacted the ideals of beauty in their respective regions. This comparative analysis aims to shed light on the commonalities between the beauty standards in South Asia and Korea, exploring the shared ideals that extend throughout both cultures. By examining the influence of Bollywood and Korean celebrities, we can gain valuable insights into the representations these industries present and how they affect the self-esteem and body image of Asian women. Furthermore, this discussion will address the pervasive issue of colorism, which continues to be a concerning aspect in both industries.
Shared Beauty Ideals: Porcelain Skin and Delicate Features
One striking commonality between Bollywood and Korean celebrities is the emphasis on fair, porcelain skin. In both cultures, fair skin has historically been associated with notions of purity, aristocracy, and beauty. Actresses and idols are often portrayed with flawless, radiant complexions, perpetuating the idea that lighter skin is the epitome of attractiveness. This shared preference for fair skin reflects a deep-seated societal bias that has roots in colonial history and the class divide. Additionally, both industries celebrate delicate and symmetrical facial features. A V-shaped face, slender nose, and large, expressive eyes are often considered the epitome of beauty. Many Bollywood and Korean celebrities undergo cosmetic procedures to conform to these ideals, further perpetuating the narrow definition of beauty. Brands like “Fair and Lovely” promote this unhealthy image of light fairer skin. In my personal experience, I remember my mom bleaching her skin to make her look fairer and I had to do that as well when I was younger. Both of us have stopped doing that, but especially since in North India people have fairer skin there, it’s become a thing of we MUST look paler and whiter. In this BBC News article, they mention the harmful perpetuation of this brand Fair and Lovely. “Unilever will rename Fair & Lovely, a skin-lightening cream which has been criticised for promoting negative stereotypes around dark skin tones. It will also remove references to "whitening" or "lightening" on the products, which are sold across Asia.”
Impact on Self Esteem and Body Image
The pervasive influence of Bollywood and Korean celebrities on beauty standards can have profound effects on the self-esteem and body image of Asian women. The constant exposure to these ideals through media platforms can lead to feelings of inadequacy and pressure to conform. This can result in a range of negative outcomes, from low self-esteem to more serious issues such as body dysmorphia and disordered eating patterns. Moreover, the ubiquity of these beauty standards can create a sense of exclusion for those who do not naturally fit the prescribed mold. Women with darker skin tones or non-traditional features may feel marginalized or even discriminated against, reinforcing harmful stereotypes and perpetuating a cycle of beauty conformity. This article talks about this woman’s personal experience of living in South Korea and how it as affected her body image and her lifestyle because of the emphasis they have on how looks and a woman’s body should be perceived. No matter how tall you are, a woman is expected to be 45 kg, which is 99 pounds. It is so extremely unhealthy and unachieveable to hold this weight and is a big factor for sickness and eating disorders. It’s so hard to look a celebrity and tell yourself “It’s okay that I don’t look like that.” It’s even worse to live in a society where you actually HAVE to be at a weight like this in order for you to be regarded as a pretty woman.
Colorism: A Deep-Seated Issue
Colorism, the discrimination against individuals with darker skin tones, remains a deeply entrenched issue in both the Bollywood and Korean entertainment industries. Brands and advertising campaigns often endorse and perpetuate this discriminatory mindset, marketing products that promise to lighten skin tone as a means to attain beauty and success. Such practices not only contribute to the stigmatization of darker-skinned individuals but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes about what constitutes "acceptable" beauty.
Addressing the Issue: Representation and Inclusivity
To challenge and dismantle these harmful beauty standards, both industries must prioritize representation and inclusivity. By showcasing a diverse range of skin tones, facial features, and body types, Bollywood and Korean entertainment can send a powerful message that beauty comes in many forms. Moreover, initiatives aimed at promoting self-love and body positivity within these industries can help foster a more inclusive and accepting environment for all.
Conclusion
The shared beauty standards between Bollywood and Korean celebrities highlight the pervasive influence of the entertainment industry in shaping societal ideals. While the emphasis on fair skin and delicate features remains a common thread, it is imperative to recognize and challenge these narrow definitions of beauty. By promoting representation and inclusivity, both industries can play a pivotal role in reshaping the narrative surrounding beauty, ultimately empowering Asian women to embrace their unique identities and celebrate their inherent worth beyond societal standards. It is through collective efforts that we can foster a more inclusive and accepting world for all.

The Ancient Art of Bhang Lassi: A Mellow Cannabis-Infused Beverage from India
Introduction
For over a thousand years, the Indian subcontinent has enjoyed a unique and traditional cannabis-infused beverage called bhang lassi. This drink is made from a combination of milk, spices, and bhang – a paste created by grinding marijuana leaves and flowers. While it may seem like an intoxicating concoction, the preparation method of bhang lassi ensures that it delivers a milder effect compared to other cannabis products. In this article, we will explore the history of bhang lassi, its cultural significance, and the science behind its gentle impact.
The History and Cultural Significance of Bhang Lassi
Bhang lassi has deep roots in Indian culture and has been consumed for various purposes, including medicinal, religious, and recreational. It is often associated with the Hindu deity Lord Shiva, who is believed to have used bhang to attain a state of meditation and relaxation. During the annual festival of Holi, bhang lassi is consumed as a symbol of breaking social barriers and promoting unity among people. In addition to its spiritual significance, bhang lassi has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It is believed to help treat various ailments such as fever, digestive issues, and anxiety. Moreover, bhang lassi is also consumed for its mild euphoric effects, which are considered less potent than other forms of cannabis consumption.
The Science Behind Bhang Lassi's Mild Effects
Despite containing up to an ounce of cannabis flowers and leaves, bhang lassi does not deliver an overpowering effect. This is because the preparation method prevents the full extraction of THC, the psychoactive compound responsible for the "high" experienced when consuming cannabis. When making bhang lassi, the first step involves creating a cannabis water tea. This process does not heat the bhang above the temperature at which THC acid becomes psychoactive. As a result, only a small portion of the THC is activated and released into the water. Furthermore, since cannabinoids are not water-soluble, the majority of them remain unextracted during this step. The addition of milk to the cannabis water tea further dilutes the concentration of THC. Fats in the milk help bind with the remaining cannabinoids, but the overall effect remains mild due to the limited extraction process. This intentional preparation method aligns with the cultural and medicinal purposes of bhang lassi – providing a gentle, soothing experience rather than an overwhelming high.
Conclusion
Bhang lassi is a fascinating example of how ancient cultures have harnessed the power of cannabis for spiritual, medicinal, and recreational purposes. Its unique preparation method ensures that the drink delivers a milder effect, making it suitable for various occasions and users. As interest in cannabis-infused beverages grows globally, the traditional art of bhang lassi serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting the cultural context of such practices.
