Good afternoon TUMBLR - April 24th - 2024
''Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971."
Atyrau Kazakhstan – Dec 2004 – Oct 2010 - Kashagan Development Project
Part 3
MAIN WORKS The Early Works were coming to an end, and the ''MAIN WORKS'' were about to start, i.e. the works for the construction of the actual plant where the crude oil coming from the wells located in the Caspian Sea would be ''stabilized'' to then be sent through a specially built pipeline (it had to connect to the transport system already existing between Kazakhstan and Russia). Or transported with tanks mounted on railway wagons (a 20km link road was being built by a local company which will connect the plant to the Kazakhstan railway network). An old acquaintance arrived as Client Site Manager, Mr. Daniele Nazzani. Former SAIPEM Manager, I met him during the selection interview for the Abu Dhabi Taweelah Water project. That day I was sitting in those tiny rooms in the fifth office building of San Donato, when this large figure more than 2 meters high entered (he had to fold his head sideways to avoid hitting the door). He had made a good impression on me, even though I had sensed that he was potentially ''dangerous''. And once he had settled in Atyrau I had confirmation of this quite quickly. Nazzani immediately began a ''cleaning work'' all those elements that he considered ''superfluous'' to the Kashagan project. Without too much preamble, he had them called to the office and without ever even looking at them in the face, he told them that ''you time here has 'expired''. With these premises, we were called to a meeting to clarify certain results of the cracking tests of the concrete we were using for the foundations of the plant's Main Pipe rack. Participants, in addition to myself, Nazzani, the AGIP Deputy Construction Manager (a Canadian named Dick Parker), the Director of our Company Giorgio Borchia and the AGIP Quality Manager. There was a brief introduction of the topic by the AGIP QA/QC Manager and then Borchia took the floor to explain our reasons, but after he had pronounced the first words suddenly Nazzani stood up and from the top of his 2.00 meters I start shouting ''ENOUGH…ENOUGH…IT'S ENOUGH……'' and lifting the table like a twig he overturn it, throwing all the papers and drawings on the ground, leaving the meeting room and us astonished and speechless, to wonder with our eyes what had happened!!! At that moment I was consulting some papers in front of me, thought that the guy was hit with some sort of heart or epileptic attack…. We were all extremely embarrassed. Mr. Parker – an elderly gentleman – apologized on behalf of AGIP and ended the meeting. While going back to the city, Mr. Borchia, we commented on what had happened, looking for a plausible explanation for Nazzani's behaviour. Even once we arrived at our offices, we continued to discuss the Site Manager's drama with Mr. Nurlan, the President of our Company . In the end, after much discussion, the only ''plausible'' explanation was that, mindful of the old wrinkles of the Abu Dhabi Taweela Water project (where Borchia held the role of Deputy General Director of S.A.C. Main Contractor of SAIPEM) Giorgio had had several disputes with Nazzani, Deputy Director of the project at the time. In conclusion, the origin of the incident could be understood, but not Nazzan's behavior, which was absolutely unacceptable. He had allowed himself, with his action, to gratuitously insult not only Borchia, but also what our Director represented at that moment, namely a Kazakh-Italian Company that was regularly appointed as AGIP's Contractor on the Kashagan project.
Two days after Nazzani's absurd scene, an official letter arrived from AGIP in which we were ordered to return the Borchia's access badge to the site, and an instruction from now on not to send letters and correspondence with his signature. An act to which I tried to make our company react with actions that could have led to Nazzani's removal. Unfortunately we were not influential enough to achieve this result, and therefore almost throughout the entire course of the Kashagan project, we had to suffer the harassment of this individual. I say almost because at the end of 2008 it was us, through good relations with the local KGB, who saved Nazzani from police arrest.. As we warned them in time, Nazzani and the Procurement Manager (another Italian guy) managed to board the Atyrau – Amsterdam flight at 7.00 am, thus escaping arrest. The charge was tax fraud for non-payment of taxes to the Kazakh government, and also illegal importation of helicopters. Two very serious crimes, whose arrest warrant was extended to all CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, thus making many of the former Soviet Union countries off limits for the two wanted men.
RETURN TO KAZAKHSTAN ON JANUARY 2006 The AGIP charter flight continued to be the fastest way to get to and from Kazahstan. I had the return flight booked from Malpensa and on January 7th I showed up regularly for boarding. Luckily my name was on the list and I boarded the flight. I noticed that the plane had changed, I asked a guy sitting beside me why:
This is a plane from the Polish company LOT specially rented because it is suitable for landing on snowy runways. The landing gear is much lower and therefore the plane can land even if it has recently snowed on the airport and the runway is not clear.
Ahh…ok…. Reassured about the possible snow landing at Atyrau airport, we took off on time. The flight was at night, and when we reached the Caucasus, the Commander warned on the loudspeaker that a strong snowfall had hit the entire Atyrau region, so the airport had been declared closed.
But why - I said to the AGIP guy sitting next to me - didn't you rent this plane because it would have to land in all conditions?
Yes but……evidently the snowfall is too heavy….
A few minutes later the Commander announced that we would land at Nalchik airport, and then we would go to sleep in Mineralnye Vody, a town in Southern Russia. The Odyssey was just beginning. From Mineralnye Vody the next day a bus took us to Stavropol, where we boarded a train to Astrakhan, about 560 km away. The train was comfortable, with 3-seater sleeping compartments – the journey lasted 11 hours and when we arrived in Astrakhan it was night. At Astrakhan station another train was waiting for us, to travel the 360 km that separated us from our final destination. It was late morning when we arrived exhausted at Atyrau central station. Mr. Talgat was waiting for me on the platform, I offered the AGIP guy a lift home, seeing as his colleagues hadn't bothered to come to pick him up. He went down to the River Palace hotel residence and while he thanked me from the rolled down window I said to him:
It's really true that when you from AGIP are involved, Murphy's first law almost always comes true. And I left without waiting for his reply.
POLICE The Kazakh police is known locally as ''Gaik'.' Given the low wages, the gaik' spends his day trying to make ends meet. The most coveted positions are in the evening patrols, especially those on Saturday evenings and before the several national holidays. There are national holidays for every taste: the President's birthday - the declaration of Independence - the Christian Christmas - the New Year - the Orthodox Christmas - the ''old New Year'' (during the Soviet period the new year was the 9th January) Nowriz (21 March the beginning of spring when the Kazakh nomads released their sheep into the steppe) Muhammad's birthday - Kurban Ait (Muslim Eid el Fitr) and many others that I can't remember now. On the evening of the eve of these holidays, where in theory there are more possible drunk drivers (but in Kazakhstan everyone also drinks throughout the week) the police deploys all its forces, especially near clubs and restaurants. Sometimes the managers of restaurants or clubs are equipped with radios by the police themselves, to signal the exit of customers who have been drinking. Naturally, whoever reports the chicken to be plucked is entitled to a percentage of the stolen goods. Of course I had my troubles with gaiks too. One of their favorite locations was before and after the bridge that connects Europe to Asia, crossing the Ural River. It is an mandatory passage from one part of the city to the other, and there is no escape from there. It was a Saturday and they stopped me, it was around midnight, while I was driving the company's black Prado. Naturally the policeman immediately shines the flashlight in my face and says the inevitable:
You drank!
No Sir…. I only drank Coca Cola….
No.. you drank alcohol, I can see it in your eyes!
No Sir…. I don't drink alcohol…I can't drink, I had a bad surgery recently and I can't drink, as per doctor's orders.
I also had surgery and now I drink twice as much as before! And in doing so he lifts his jacket and shows me a belly covered in horrible scars… The pantomime went on for a good half hour, then realizing that I had no intention of slipping any banknotes into his car, he announced to me:
Shall we go to the clinic??!! This means at least wasting a couple of hours of sleep.
Let's go to the clinic, I said.
Are you sure you want to go to the clinic? If you test positive then I will have to arrest you, and the judge will not be there until Monday…
The sooner we go, the sooner we finish this story – I conclude So we left for the clinic, where once we arrive a sleepy lady doctor takes my blood to proceed with the alcohol test. While the doctor does the test, the policeman was walking nervously and every now and then he was coming closer, and pointing his finger at me exclaims:
You drank! I look at him with a half smile. Then suddenly I see the figure of the doctor reflected in the glass waving a finger in a sign of ''no'' in the direction of the policeman. Whereupon I approach the policeman with my hand outstretched, to claim the key to my Prado. He slams me on the table with one final statement:
You tested negative….BUT YOU DRINK!! I left, throwing him a ''Spakoine noche brigadier''.(Good night brigadier).

Founded in 2019 in Zug, Switzerland, Velas is blockchain network for secure and interoperable transactions. Velas also served as the Title Sponsor of Ferrari Esports Series. Snapdragon Satellite whose partner company is Qualcomm is a two-way satellite messaging service. The software firm has only joined the partnership portfolio of the Italian team last year, but the two parties appear to have terminated their collaboration after just one year. The Maranello-based team’s partnership with the eyewear manufacturer originally began in 2016. The French manufacturer has various brands under its umbrella with Oakley, Ray-Ban, Kodak Lens, Eyezen, Crizal and Xperio all contributing to the company’s portfolio. Ferrari’s 2023 F1 challenger will continue to feature the Ray-Ban brand. “As of today, Ferrari is preparing to achieve new goals with EssilorLuxottica: from the first exclusively Ferrari-branded eyewear line, to the challenges awaiting us on the circuits in the motorsport seasons ahead, said Benedetto Vigna, chief executive of Ferrari. “Starting from a common history of excellence and authentically shared values, we want to build further exciting projects together with the millions of fans and customers who choose us and believe in this constantly developing collaboration.” Among Ferrari’s sponsor for the 2023 season will be Shell, Santander, Ray-Ban, AWS, Richard Mille, Ceva, Mission Winnow, Bitdefender, Estrella Galicia, HCL Software, Palantir, OMR, Puma, Radiobook, VistaJet, Giorgio Armani, Riva, Riva, Mahle, Pirelli, Manpower Group, TechnoGym, Iveco, Bell, Riedel, Garrett, Öhlins, Sabelt, Frecciarossa, NGK Spark Plugs, Brembo and SKF. via F1Technical.net . Is the ICV Certificate Mandatory in the UAE?
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is well-known for its flourishing economy, progressive policies, and appeal as a business destination. The In-Country Value (ICV) Program is one of the UAE government’s major economic development projects. The ICV Program is initiated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and currently managed and monitored by MoIAT. (Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology). This program is a strategic initiative to strengthen the national economy, and boost the local industrial growth of the nation. However businesses are unsure whether they need an ICV Certification or is it mandatory to obtain an ICV certification. This blog discusses the ICV program’s importance, certification requirements, and whether organisations are required to earn the ICV certificate. Understanding The ICV Program The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT ) launched the ICV program as a strategic strategy to boost local enterprises’ contributions to the country’s economy. It encourages businesses to prioritise local suppliers, invest in local workers, and contribute to the overall growth of the UAE economy. The ICV program assesses a company’s in-country value using numerous parameters, including: – Local procurement -Emiratization activities, including employing the Emiratis and investing in local manufacturing – Spending on research & development By getting an ICV certificate, organizations demonstrate their commitment to the UAE’s economic goals and their support to local economic development. Is the ICV Certificate Mandatory? Although the ICV certificate is not a must-have for all enterprises in the UAE, there are specific sectors that require ICV certification and certain scenarios that make acquiring the ICV qualification critical. Let us explain the significance of obtaining ICV certification for following divisions: 1. Government or semi-government contracts The ICV certificate is required for enterprises bidding on contracts with government bodies. – Semi-governmental organisations – Companies that have implemented the ICV include ADNOC , Etisalat , and TAQA . These organisations analyse tenders using ICV scores, providing preference to enterprises who contribute more significantly to the local economy. 2. Private Sector Participation While private sector enterprises are not obliged to receive an ICV certificate, many choose to become accredited in order to form collaborations with government-linked organisations. This permits them to remain competitive and receive preferential consideration in tendering processes. 3. Free Zones and Mainland Companies Businesses operating in free zones or under mainland licenses are generally not required to obtain an ICV certificate unless they do business with ICV-compliant government-linked enterprises. However, earning the accreditation might help a company’s reputation and business possibilities. Why Should Businesses Consider Obtaining an ICV Certification? The ICV Certificate is very essential for companies to be involved and have an edge in the tendering processes. Here are some of the strong reasons why an ICV Certificate is advantageous for businesses: 1. Competitive Advantage: An ICV certificate elevates your company’s position in government tenders. Organisations like ADNOC frequently prioritise vendors with high ICV scores, ensuring that these enterprises are given advantage during the procurement process. 2. Increased Business Opportunities: Many significant commercial sector organisations, particularly those that support government projects, are implementing ICV concepts benefit substantially with the ICV Certification. Having an ICV certificate enables enterprises to enter these attractive industries with a preferential status in bidding for tenders and contracts. 3. Demonstrating Commitment to Local Development: The UAE government values organisations that support the local economy. Businesses that earn an ICV certificate can demonstrate their dedication to Emiratization, local procurement, and sustainable development. 4. Attracting Foreign Investment: Businesses possessing an ICV accreditation demonstrate stability and consistency with UAE economic policies. This may make the company more appealing to overseas investors seeking to partner with complying entities. Steps to Get an ICV Certificate To acquire an ICV certification for your business, the following procedures should be followed: 1. Find an Approved ICV-Certifying Body to Obtain Certification The UAE government has authorised some certifying agencies to provide ICV certificates. Businesses must choose one of these organisations before beginning the certification procedure. 2. Prepare Financial Documents A company’s ICV score is calculated using its audited financial statements. These must be prepared in accordance with international financial reporting standards (IFRS) and cover the most recent fiscal year. 3. Parametric Evaluation The certifying body will analyse several indicators, including the percentage of local procurement. – Emirati employee salaries and investments in local assets. – Spending on research & development 4. Certificate Issuance After the examination is completed, the certifying organisation will issue the ICV certificate, which is valid for one year. 5. Annual Renewal Companies must renew their ICV certificate every year, depending on current financial accounts. Challenges in Obtaining an ICV Certificate While obtaining an ICV certificate is uncomplicated, organisations may face several challenges: 1. Understanding Complex Criteria The metrics used to compute the ICV score might be complicated, particularly for businesses new to the UAE or unfamiliar with its regulations. 2. Maintaining Accurate Financial Records Audited financial statements are required for certification. Any errors or non-compliance with IFRS can result in delays or rejection. 3. Aligning with Program Objectives Some firms may struggle to match their operations with the goals of the ICV program, especially if they rely substantially on imported goods or services. How to Maximize Your ICV Score? Businesses can maximise the benefits of the ICV program by implementing the following strategies: 1. Focus on Local Procurement Prioritise obtaining materials and services from local suppliers to improve your ICV score. 2. Invest in Emiratization Hire and train UAE citizens to meet Emiratization quotas and contribute to local workforce growth. 3. Strengthen Local Partnerships Collaborate with local manufacturers and service providers to improve your ICV results. 4. Commit to Innovation and Sustainability Allocate resources to research and development, particularly in areas that are consistent with the UAE’s aims for innovation and sustainability. ICV in Future: Impact in the UAE Economy in 2025 & Beyond As the UAE’s economy diversifies, the ICV program is anticipated to become more integrated into company operations. Here are a few projected trends: 1. Expanding into New Sectors While the program is now focused on oil and gas, telecommunications, and energy, it may eventually spread to other industries. 2. Increased Collaboration with the Private Sector More private-sector companies are likely to adopt ICV principles, resulting in a ripple effect that promotes broader compliance. 3. Focus on Sustainability The UAE’s dedication to sustainability and innovation may result in adjustments to ICV standards that prioritise green activities and technical advancement. While the ICV certificate is not required for all firms in the UAE, it is a must for those wishing to engage with government and semi-government agencies. Obtaining the certificate is a strategic decision for private sector enterprises that can lead to new prospects, increased competitiveness, and a commitment to the UAE’s economic goals. Businesses in the UAE should carefully consider their needs, industry, and ambitions before deciding whether ICV certification is appropriate for their growth strategy. Get Your ICV Certificate With An ICV Certifying Body – Abstract ICV With its multiple benefits, the ICV program is more than just a regulatory measure; it provides a pathway to long-term company success in the UAE. By aligning with the UAE’s economic agenda, your company may contribute to the country’s prosperity while also expanding its own. As an ICV certifying body, authorized by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), we help you with the ICV certification process and offer services such as ICV Consultation, ICV Audit, ICV Identification and Validation etc. If you want to obtain an ICV certificate or need help with compliance, reach out to AbstractICV today! Good afternoon TUMBLR - March 23th - 2024
''Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971."
January 1998 - October 1999 - NLNG - TSKJ Port Harcourt Project (Nigeria).
Part 3.
SWIMMING SUIT I hadn't brought a swimsuit from Italy, and since we spent Sunday in one of the hotel pools in the area, I decided to buy one. I told the driver to take me to a location where I could find one, he stopped the Land Rover in front of a small shop along Aba Road. There were different types and colors of swimsuits inside, in the end I opted for one in red and blue. Before the shopkeeper placed it in the usual supermarket plastic bag, I wanted to take one last look - and here's the ''surprise'': IT WAS 2nd HAND!! But the most incredible thing was that they had put it up for sale with ''clear signals'' of those who had used it before!!! I told the sales man: at least wash it? Naaa…… I left with a mixture of fury and disbelief: I couldn't belive to what my eyes have seen.
SOKU PROJECT SITE
Niger river - On the way to Soku.
As mentioned elsewhere, the Soku Gas Plant was a project that SAIPEM Nigeria was executing in parallel to our TSKJ project. The site was located about 2 hours by speed boat from Port Harcourt, in the middle of the Niger River Delta. All around there was a dense rainforest, so to avoid cutting down thousands of trees it was decided that the plant would be built on an artificial island in the middle of the river. A Spanish company specialized in dredging and construction of artificial islands (called reclaimed land) was commissioned and within 6 months a 1.5 km by 800 meter platform was ready to begin work. A camp was built by importing portacabins from SAIPEM NORWAY (yes, you read that right). The reasons behind SAIPEM Procurement was:
''If they are good for the cold of Norway, they will also be good for the tropical forest of Nigeria''. Carlo Sgorbani arrival to Port Harcourt. Sgorbani was also an ''old'' SAIPEM guy. I met him during the Bir Rebaa project in Algeria. I then found it again in Abu Dhabi for the Taweela aWater Project, where during the last part of the project he assumed the position of Site Manager (And immediately left our compound to rent a villa at Hilton hotel). An early one morning I went to Branch Office and met Sgorbani who was still under shock due the night flight from Paris.
Ohh...I cant believe to my eyes! How come you're here Carlo?
And he, with the perpetual cigarette in his hand: well… I should be the Site Manager of the Soku Gas Plant project…
Soku Gas Plant?? But… are you sure of what you say? I'm quite sure there are any Hilton villas in Soku….... well, come on… you can't always go for luxury… and then you'll see that the ex-Norway containers won't be so uncomfortable!
He didn't reply.
SAIPEM Club SAIPEM has always cared about the ''welfare'' of its employees located in the most sh****hole remote and difficult areas of the planet. Therefore the Management decided to install a clubhouse inside the Soku compound. As soon as the Worry project structure was made available, it was transported by barge to Soku. It consisted of different container modules, and inside it had a billiard room, ping pong, TV room, bar with tables where can play cards in the evening. Behind the bar counter, above the shelves that held the bottles of liquor, a long python skin had been fixed. And this will cause several problems.
PYTHON STRIKE The morning after the club inauguration, Sgorbani and all the other colleagues were woken up by strange moans and screams coming from inside the camp. They immediately rushed to the front of the club and found themselves in front of dozens of people lying on the ground crying, wriggling and sprinkling sand on their heads. Local people were screaming like:
Our Lord is dead…you killed our Lord our Lord is dead…you have killed our God....... All the expatriates present could not understand what was going on before their eyes. Sgorbani called the local PRO, who revealed the burden:
''Sir – he said – these people are telling that you from SAIPEM captured and killed their Lord, and then after having slaughtered him you hung his skin in your club, offending his memory even more – now they expect years of disgrace if nothing is done to remedy this tragedy."
But…but…All of this is inconceivable – replied Sgorbani – the python skin was hung on the wall of the bar when the structure was in Warry, months ago, not here……….
I know, Sir – said the PRO – but these people say that this was why they hadn't seen their Lord for months: he had migrated to Warry, someone from SAIPEM captured him and made him a trophy.
Sgorbani and all other expats know whether to laugh or get angry at what they had heard and what was happening in front of them - however the Site Manager understood that laughing at the matter could generate further and serious problems - so he asked the PRO:
Ok… okay… so what should we do?
Sir – said the PRO – I spoke with their Chief and he says that the only solution to this serious matter is to call a Great Medicine Man who lives in Calabar (about 200 km from Soku) Only he will be able to exorcise the bad influences caused to what SAIPEM people did. But first of all we need to remove the python skin off the bar wall, Sir.
Ok – replied Sgorbani – we'll do it right away, but in the meantime we have to get back to work!
No Sir, until everything is resolved, work cannot resume.
Sgorbani was about to fly into a rage, but was able to contain himself - he ordered the PRO to proceed as quickly as possible with the call of this ''medicine man'' - that he should come immediately, SAIPEM would spare no expense, and would do everything needed made available, starting from the speed boat. Two days of great tension passed in the camp and on the artificial island. Time seemed suspended, waiting for the arrival of the sorcerer who would resolve the drama. An eerie silence loomed over everything and everyone, when construction activities usually filled the place with noise. In just two days (a great achievement considering that it was happening in Nigeria) the ''Great Medicine Man of Calabar'' arrived in great pomp, dressed in traditional clothes, covered by a bright apple-green cloak, with a headdress of peacock feathers and studded with precious stones (nobody knew if true or fake…).
Between two wings of the crowd who knelt as he passed on the way from the docking pier to the club, the sorcerer distributed blessings with his inlaid staff. No one, except the faithful, was allowed inside the club, where, after a brief ceremony, the python skin was peeled off the wall and carefully carried outside by at least six weeping people. The skin was carried as if in procession to the pier, where a previously prepared canoe transported it across the river to the vicinity of the village where the local tribe lived. A pit had been dug there which, covered with a white sheet, welcomed the python's skin. Once the skin was wrapped, the burial proceeded, accompanied by songs, blessings and mysterious formulas recited by the Great Medicine Man, who every now and then drew water from a drum with a palm leaf and sprinkled the grave. Once filled with earth, flowers and tree branches were planted on the tomb, and the area was marked off with stones. The funeral was over, and the sorcerer moved on to collect the money from SAIPEM PRO - the cost of the entire "ceremony was over 20,000 dollars. The next day, work at site could finally resume.
ATTACK on SOKU COMPOUND Perhaps the python affair had been a sort of ''dress rehearsal'' to see the type of response that SAIPEM would have given to an emergency. The fact is that a few weeks passed, and a new big problem arose for Sgorbani and the SAIPEM expatriates on Soku project. It was an August hot morning, when they woke up with a noise caused by rifle and stick blows that an handful of ''rebels'' were giving to their dormitory containers who had come from Norway. After a few minutes, all the expatriates were gathered in front of the offices, and when asked by the one who seemed to be in charge "where the Chief was", the answer was that he was in his office. (Sgorbani used to get up very early). Some rebels entered the offices, and to make it clear that they had serious intentions, they fired a couple of rifle shots which fortunately did not hit Sgorbani, but lodged in the wall behind his head. He too was pushed into the square in front of the offices, and made to lie on his stomach like everyone else. The rebels claimed to have taken possession of the artificial island of SOKU and the site, to put an end to the indiscriminate exploitation of the River State's resources. They wanted money, hiring of local staff, salary increases for those already working with SAIPEM, construction of a school and a hospital in the adjacent community. These intentions would be followed by an ultimatum, after which if the requests were not accepted by the local governments and the top management of SAIPEM, they would begin to eliminate a hostage every 2 hours. While all this was happening, the Nigerian Army Security forces had surrounded the artificial island. A long-distance dialogue then began between the Major who led the military and the guy who professed to be the leader of the rebels. The military's strategy immediately appeared clear:
''First free the hostages and then we will sit down for negotiation'' - this was the message delivered to the attackers. Who naturally refused, demanding at least the delivery of a large sum of cash, the arrival of the local Governor, who should have handed himself over to them, to unblock the situation. In the meantime, time passed, and the time set for the expiry of the ultimatum approached, and the hostages were still on the ground with their hands behind their heads. The tension mounted as the hours passed, and when there were only a few minutes left before the ultimatum expired, suddenly the Security forces attacked the Rebels! Taken by surprise, many of them tried to escape, others took some of the hostages by force to shield themselves from the military fire. For a few minutes there was total chaos: shots, shouts, the rebels trying to reach some canoes hidden among the branches on the river bank, to escape capture. The clashes lasted a few minutes, and soon everything was silent, only a few sporadic bursts could be heard from the automatic weapons with which the Task Force eliminated the remaining resistance. Some rebels were captured and immediately knocked to the ground with rifle butts. Most of the hostages had fled to the dormitory containers and locked themselves inside. Once order was restored, the Major asked to speak to Sgorbani.
Do you have a couple of empty containers?
Yes, of course – replied the Site Manager
Have them taken to an open, sunny area. Zaccagnini had the order carried out, and after an hour the SAIPEM crane deposited two empty containers in an open area on the island. The Major then ordered his men to let the captured rebels enter the containers. When the operation was concluded, the containers were closed with heavy padlocks, and the Major set up guards. Then he said aloud:
''No one must go near the containers, this scum must remain awaiting the decisions of the Military Tribunal of Port Harcourt''.
