ACHTUNG – Kunsthandwerk!

Some tips to start learning french on your own:
-Knowing your vocabulary is the most important part of the process, it is really the base. I would say you should spend 50% of the time writing down and learning the words you think you would use often and translate them (don’t forget to include the articles/gender in front of the nouns!)
- You can google french-english (or your 1st language) cognates, there are actually many french words similar in other languages
- Speaking of articles, you can find a table of definite, indefinite and partitive articles (masculins, feminins et pluriels). They are crucial for grammatical accuracy.
-Structure is quite easy for affirmative sentences : subject-verb-object. Learn the verbs structure according to the pronouns (conjugaison) and how to form negatives and questions (most of the time the verb comes before the subject).
-Greetings and expressions are quite fun to learn!
-Ofc Duolingo or other language teaching apps are good but there’s an extent to how far you’ll learn how to speak fluently. You’ll be able to read, understand and even write on your own. I moved to Germany to get more exposure to the language, the way of living and the culture helping me develop my oral skills, which I don’t think I could have done at home. But with the current situation and for casual learners, it is not ideal/a bit extreme to move to another country 😂 i would recommend finding native speakers online who would be willing to practice speaking/writing to you and you can teach them your 1st language in exchange! Youtube channels to learn french/french youtubers i really like:
-Easy French (recommended), Paul Taylor, innerfrench, StreetFrench.org
- Cyprien, Norman, le rire jaune, Natoo (these might be when you are at a more advanced level bc there are slangs which they use in France)
Music:
‘French Indie⚡️’ and ‘french aesthetic’ playlists on spotify have great songs, Angèle, GIMS, Louane, Amir, Stromae, Kendji Girac, Aya Nakamura are all popular french artists. Personally I love older french songs so some of my favorite ones are: La vie en rose (Edith Piaf), Le Festin (Camille), La Mer (Cynthia M) Le Temps est bon (Bon Entendeur vs Isabelle Pierre), On s’attache (Christophe Mae), Lady Mélody (Tom Frager), A nos actes manqués, Je fais de toi mon essentiel (Emmanuel Moir), J’envoie valser (Zazie), 4 mots sur un piano, all Claude François songs.
Movies/shows:
My advice for beginners is to start watching english movies with French audio+subtitles so that you are not completely lost (you should def watch Ratatouille in french!). But if you feel confident, here are some movies to learn french: La marche de l’empereur, Kirikou et la sorcière, Potiche, OSS 117, L’arnacoeur, Les Intouchables
Some other movies i love or which are very popular: Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (fave), Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au bon dieu?, L’extraordinaire voyage du Fakir, Tomboy (another Céline Sciamma movie, she’s one of my favorite directors), Les Profs, Amour (2012)
Reality/TV shows: Le meilleur patissier, Pekin Express, Koh-Lanta, Top chef, The Voice (France), Skam France, Netflix: Dix pour cent (call my agent), Tintin, Plan Coeur (the hookup plan), Chef’s table france, https://www.secondhalftravels.com/french-series-netflix/
Books/literature:
Le Petit Prince (a must-read), Le petit Nicolas, Madame Bovary, Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran, les histoires des Frères Grimm, Les Malheurs de Sophie, Les fables de la Fontaine, L’Avare
