Tens of thousands of people have been fired in the tech sector in the last six months alone. With the economy the way it is, and with people who are already unable to get a job, I wonder how an extra 20,000+ jobseekers are going to have any luck finding work.
#i just want to point out that this isn't just automation. it's different for every company but a lot of it comes down to profiteering imo#the video game industry made disgusting amounts of money during the pandemic. best three years of sales in history#but that momentum was never going to keep up forever. even when the momentum was at full swing people were getting laid off#Activision-Blizzard laid off over a hundred people just before christmas while bobby kotick got a $250 million bonus#thst might have even been before the pandemic#but you're seeing it with microsoft and ubisoft. wouldn't surprise me if sony and nintendo were following suit in a less public manner#microsoft - arguably the biggest tech conglomerate in the world (next to tencent) - laid off 10 thousand workers alone#i live in a town with just over 10 thousand people. in my entire fucking town. in my perspective that's more or less the world around me#all of those people - jobless#facebook - didn't like 7k people just get fired? that's hot on the heels of john carmack leaving too#john carmack is probably one of the top 100 people in the tech industry. his tech improvements helped aging PC hardware keep up for years#DOOM might be a meme but it ran that well because id software under john carmack revolutionised rendering techniques and scrolling#and stuff like that. john carmack has been at the forefront of graphical technology and game development for 30+ years#that's resulted in a couple duds like RAGE. he was also all-in on voxel technology before he moved into VR#all of that was context for this: john carmack left meta (who bought oculus) and lambasted the company for poor management on the way out#saying that he'd never seen such unnecessary and wanton expenditure in his career. meta were throwing their money at things thay don't work#here's john carmack trying to lay the groundwork of a successful game for meta's metaverse. here's meta chasing superfluous buzzwords#meta spent almost $14 BILLION on buzzwords and marketing at the behest of the actual tech. and then they FIRED 7000 PEOPLE!!!!!!#they had a HAIL MARY working on their game - because metaverse IS A GAME - and they prioritised SELLING THE PRODUCT BEFORE BUILDING IT#IT COST THEM $14 BILLION + THEIR HAIL MARY - AND THEN THEY FIRED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE!!!!!!#Ubisoft and Activision-Blizzard have been facing mass resignations after years of abusive and toxic workplaces#and on top of that they're firing people too. google stadia just went under. it wouldn't surprise me if 2k and rockstar were firing people#I don't know how many other unemployed people there are in america - hundreds of thousands? but 20k more is even worse for everyone#keep in mind that even with a $14 billion loss - meta still makes billions. Microsoft is in no financial danger#tech is more lucrative now than ever. i genuinely believe that these cuts are to keep record profits at record heights#because the pandemic boom is ending and their ALREADY OBSCENELY LUCRATIVE revenue flows are going back to normal#so 20k+ tech workers are losing their jobs to keep $80 billion instead of $79 billion. all of those people - jobless#that's 20 thousand people with individual lives and families and expenses. lost their jobs in the last six months#that example i gave - $80 billion instead of $79 billion. that's not revenue. that's profit.#all of those people out of work due to incompetence at best and rank orofiteering at worst. their salaries and benefits come under revenue

Integrating E-Commerce Solutions across Websites and Apps for Multi-Platform Selling
Tumblr media
In digital age, e-commerce has become an integral part of the retail industry. With the rapid growth of online shopping, businesses are constantly seeking ways to expand their reach and maximize their sales potential. One effective strategy that has emerged is multi-platform selling, which involves integrating e-commerce solutions across websites and apps to create a seamless shopping experience for customers.
Without a doubt, selling across various platforms is a game changer in the realm of custom eCommerce development, with the potential to propel any organization to new heights. This blog will look at all aspects of multi-platform selling and how it affects the modern eCommerce business scene. Let us get started.
eCommerce Evolution: A New Era of Online Selling
Welcome to the new era of online selling! With the ever-growing popularity of e-commerce, businesses are constantly seeking ways to expand their reach and increase their sales. One such method that has gained significant traction is multi-platform selling, which involves integrating e-commerce solutions across websites and apps.
However, because consumer behaviours  and market demands change so quickly, an all-in-one or single eCommerce strategy is insufficient for long-term success. This is where multi-platform selling provides numerous chances for firms looking to increase engagement and diversify their reach.
What Does Multi-Platform Selling Mean?
Multi-platform selling refers to the practice of selling products or services through multiple online channels simultaneously. This approach allows businesses to reach a wider audience and cater to customers' preferences across various platforms, including websites, mobile apps, social media platforms, and marketplaces. By offering a consistent shopping experience across different channels, businesses can enhance customer engagement, increase brand visibility, and boost sales.
Whether you run a little business or a large corporation, if you carefully position your company on these platforms, you will meet all of your customers' expectations by providing a convenient purchasing experience. However, managing sales across several channels is not as simple as it appears; a custom eCommerce development solution is required to optimize the process.
Major Perks of Multi-Platform Selling
There are several significant perks associated with multi-platform selling. Let's take a closer look at some of the major advantages that businesses can enjoy:
1. Expanded Reach: By leveraging multiple platforms, businesses can tap into a larger customer base and target diverse demographics. This broadens their reach and increases the chances of attracting new customers.
2. Enhanced Customer Experience: Multi-platform selling enables businesses to provide a seamless and consistent shopping experience across various channels. Customers can browse products, make purchases, and access support services conveniently, regardless of the platform they prefer.
3. Increased Sales Opportunities: With multiple channels at their disposal, businesses have more opportunities to showcase their products and services and convert leads into sales. Each platform serves as an additional sales channel, increasing the chances of generating revenue.
4. Improved Brand Visibility: Businesses may increase brand awareness and familiarity by maintaining a presence across many media. Consistent branding across channels promotes client trust and loyalty.
5. Better Data Insights: Multi-platform selling allows businesses to gather data from different sources, providing valuable insights into customer behaviour, preferences, and trends. This data can be used to optimize marketing strategies, personalize customer experiences, and drive informed business decisions.
Other key benefits of multi-platform selling include:
Improved conversion rate
Better customer loyalty.
Improved inventory transparency.
Improved customer segmentation.
Mobile commerce trend capitalization
Best Platforms for Multi-Channel eCommerce Business
1. Shopify: Shopify offers a comprehensive e-commerce platform that allows businesses to create and manage online stores. It provides seamless integration with various sales channels, including websites, mobile apps, social media platforms, and marketplaces.
2. Magento: Magento is a highly flexible and scalable e-commerce platform that caters to businesses of all sizes. It supports multi-channel selling by integrating with multiple platforms, enabling businesses to sell across websites, mobile apps, and marketplaces.
3. Etsy: If you want to sell antique, handcrafted, craft supplies, or other one-of-a-kind things online, Etsy is a great place to start. Users may easily access a wide range of product categories on this marketplace, including clothing, jewellery, tools, home, living, kids & babies, and entertainment.
4. Amazon Marketplace: As one of the largest online marketplaces, Amazon provides businesses with a vast customer base and global reach. Selling on Amazon Marketplace can significantly expand the visibility and sales potential of products.
5. eBay: eBay is another popular online marketplace that allows businesses to sell products to a wide range of customers. With its auction-style listings and fixed-price options, eBay offers flexibility for multi-channel selling.
6.Walmart Marketplace: Walmart is a frequently used marketplace that provides excellent prospects for online enterprises. This is a curated e-commerce portal. As a seller, you must meet specified requirements for providing excellent customer service.
7. Facebook Marketplace: This is Facebook's integrated platform that provides fantastic online selling choices to local sellers and small enterprises. This platform is simple to use and helps you promote your goods to a social media-savvy customer audience.
How to Set Up a Successful Multi-Platform Selling Strategy:
1. Identify Target Platforms:
Research and analyse the platforms that align with your target audience and business objectives. Consider factors such as platform popularity, user demographics, and integration capabilities.
2. Seamless Integration:
Select e-commerce platforms that offer robust integration capabilities with various channels. Ensure that your chosen platforms can synchronize product listings, inventory, pricing, and order management across all channels.
3. Consistent Branding:
Maintain consistent branding elements, such as logo, colors, and messaging, across all platforms. This creates a cohesive brand identity and fosters customer recognition and trust.
4. Optimize User Experience:
Provide a user-friendly and intuitive shopping experience on every platform. Optimize website and app performance, ensure mobile responsiveness, and streamline the checkout process to minimize friction and maximize conversions.
5. Data-Driven Decision Making:
Leverage analytics and data insights to monitor and measure the performance of each platform. Identify trends, customer preferences, and areas for improvement, and use this information to refine your multi-platform selling strategy.
6. Customer Support:
Offer consistent and responsive customer support across all platforms. Provide multiple channels for customer inquiries, such as live chat, email, and phone, to ensure a seamless support experience.
7. Cross-promotion:
Cross-promotion is a marketing strategy where two or more parties promote each other's products or services to their respective audiences. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement that can help increase brand exposure, reach new customers, and drive sales.
8. Privacy and Data Security:
 - Manage all of your customers' data safely.
- Display all privacy policies to your customers to develop trust.
9. Focus on market trends.
- Keep up with the latest industry developments, platform updates, and client requests.
- Be prepared to change your business approach (if necessary) to stay ahead of the market.
Conclusion:
Multi-platform selling has become a crucial strategy for businesses aiming to thrive in the competitive e-commerce landscape. By integrating e-commerce solutions across websites and apps, businesses can expand their reach, enhance the customer experience, and boost sales. With the availability of various platforms, businesses can choose the ones that align with their target audience and business goals. By implementing a well-planned multi-platform selling strategy, businesses can establish a strong presence across multiple channels, drive customer engagement, increase brand visibility, and ultimately achieve success in the evolving world of e-commerce.

HRMantra's Legal Battle Against Darwinbox Titans
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In a blockbuster legal showdown, HRMantra Software Pvt Ltd has initiated a no-holds-barred legal crusade against its ex-employee Nasreen Shaikh and the trio behind Darwinbox Digital Solutions Pvt Ltd - Chaitanya Peddi, Jayant Paleti, and Rohit Chennamaneni. The FIR, wielding the legal arsenal of Sections 406, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, and Sections 43 (a), (b), and (g) along with 66, 66-B, 66-C, 72, 72-A of the Information Technology Act 2000, exposes a gripping tale of corporate espionage and alleged subversion.
Backdrop:
With a legacy spanning over two decades, HRMantra has been a trailblazer in the HR and payroll software arena, having developed and marketed its flagship product, HRMantra, since the year 2000. However, the tranquility was disrupted when Darwinbox allegedly embarked on a calculated mission, strategically poaching HRMantra's experienced professionals and violating contractual agreements that prohibited them from joining competitors in the HR and payroll software domain for a mandated two-year period.
Legal Onslaught:
The FIR meticulously chronicles how Darwinbox allegedly circumvented contractual obligations set by HRMantra, willfully disregarding appointment letters, employee undertakings, bond agreements, and full and final settlement terms. These contractual safeguards explicitly prohibit ex-employees from disclosing trade secrets, client lists, employee details, and other sensitive information or tarnishing HRMantra's reputation in any media.
Business Fallout:
The aftermath of Darwinbox's alleged actions has wreaked havoc on HRMantra. The FIR claims that Nasreen Shaikh and eight other employees transitioned to Darwinbox, strategically targeting HRMantra's clients. This has resulted in a substantial loss of clients, a financial setback amounting to crores of Rupees, and a discernible blow to HRMantra's once-untarnished brand standing.
Founder's Persistence:
In the face of adversity, HRMantra's founder, Mr. Pankaj Bhargav, displayed unwavering determination. After initially approaching the police in August 2021, he persisted through the legal labyrinth, ultimately securing a court order on January 2, 2024. This directive compelled the Charkop police station to formally register the FIR on February 20, 2024.
Conclusion:
As the legal drama unfolds, the business community awaits the outcome, recognizing the potential impact on corporate ethics, employee loyalty, and fair competition. HRMantra's bold legal offensive against the founders of Darwinbox underscores the imperative of protecting proprietary assets and upholding integrity in the fiercely competitive corporate landscape. The resolution of this clash could well shape standards for ethical conduct and professional loyalty in the dynamic tech industry.

Understanding the Retail and E-commerce Landscape
The retail and e-commerce industry is a highly dynamic and competitive space. Companies within this domain face the continuous challenge of pricing their products right to maximize profitability while staying attractive to their customers. In this context, pricing becomes a critical element of their strategy. Let's delve into some of these challenges:
Rapidly Changing Market Dynamics: Retail and e-commerce markets are highly volatile, with ever-shifting consumer preferences and market trends. Adapting to these changes in real-time is essential to stay competitive. Without the right tools, businesses risk making pricing decisions that are out of sync with market realities.
Intense Competition: In retail and e-commerce, competition is fierce. With numerous players offering similar products or services, pricing becomes a key differentiator. Setting prices too high can drive customers away, while pricing too low can erode profit margins.
Complex Supply Chain and Cost Structures: The retail and e-commerce sector often deals with complex supply chain operations and cost structures. Understanding the true costs associated with a product or service is essential for setting optimal prices. Traditional methods of cost calculation can be time-consuming and error-prone.
Customer Behaviour and Expectations: Today's consumers are more informed and price-sensitive than ever before. Their buying behaviour can change rapidly in response to various factors, including promotions, discounts, and market trends. Retailers must be agile in responding to these changes.
Competitor Pricing Strategies: Keeping a constant eye on competitor pricing is crucial. Businesses need to respond promptly to pricing moves made by competitors to remain competitive. Manual tracking and analysis of competitor pricing are arduous and inefficient processes.

From Perfectionist to Productive: 5 Tips for Managing Your Projects Better
Tumblr media
Are you a perfectionist who finds it hard to finish projects on time? Do you often get caught up in the details and lose sight of the bigger picture? Managing projects can be overwhelming, especially when you strive for perfection. But fear not! In this post, we’ll share five tips that will help transform your mindset from perfectionist to productive
By implementing these strategies, you’ll be able to manage your projects more efficiently and effectively than ever before. So let’s dive into the world of productivity and see how small changes can make a big impact!
Introduction
As a perfectionist, you have high standards for yourself and your work. You want everything to be perfect, and you often put pressure on yourself to achieve this. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm.
It’s important to remember that nobody is perfect. And, in fact, striving for perfection can often lead to less-than-perfect results. Instead of putting pressure on yourself to be perfect, try to focus on being productive. Here are some tips for managing your projects better:
1. Break down your project into smaller tasks. When you have a large project, it can feel overwhelming. Breaking it down into smaller tasks can help you focus and feel more in control.
Set realistic deadlines If you’re constantly chasing an unrealistic deadline, you’re going to end up feeling stressed and frustrated. instead, set realistic deadlines that give you enough time to complete the task without rushing.
Don’t procrastinate. If you’re putting off starting a project because you’re afraid it won’t be perfect, you’re only making things worse. Procrastination will only lead to more stress and less productivity.
Accept that there will always be imperfections. No matter how hard you try, there will always be imperfections in your work. Accepting this can help you let go of the need for perfectionism and allow you to focus on the task at hand .
5. Prioritize self-care. Taking care of yourself is essential for your productivity and mental wellbeing. Make sure you’re taking regular breaks, getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals, and engaging in activities that make you happy. This will help you stay focused and manage your projects more effectively.
What is Project Perfectionism?
Perfectionism is often lauded as a positive trait. After all, what’s wrong with wanting to do your best work? The problem with perfectionism is that it can lead to Procrastination. When you’re worried that your work isn’t good enough, you may put off starting it at all. Or, you may start but then get bogged down in details and never finish.
Perfectionism can also lead to Paralysis by Analysis. This is when you spend so much time planning and preparing for a project that you never actually get started on it. By the time you’re ready to start, the project may be outdated or no longer relevant.
The key to managing your projects better is to find a balance between perfectionism and productivity. Here are some tips:
–Start with the end in mind. What is the goal of the project? Once you have a clear vision for what you want to achieve, it will be easier to let go of the need for perfection and focus on getting the job done.
–Set realistic deadlines. If you give yourself too much time, you’ll be more likely to fall into the perfectionism trap. By setting shorter deadlines, you’ll force yourself to focus on the most important aspects of the project and let go of the details that aren’t essential.
–Break the project down into smaller tasks. When a project seems overwhelming, it’s easy to get stuck in the details. But by breaking it down into smaller tasks, you can focus on completing each one before moving on to the next.
Project Perfectionism is about finding a balance between getting everything perfect and getting things done. By setting realistic deadlines, breaking projects down into smaller tasks, and focusing on the end goal, you can manage your projects more effectively and achieve success without letting perfectionism stand in your way.

5 Strategies to Overcome for Perfectionist
If you’re a perfectionist, you know that the pursuit of perfection can be all-consuming. It can be difficult to let go of your standards and allow yourself to move on from a project. However, if you want to be productive, it’s important to find ways to overcome your perfectionism.
Here are some strategies to help you overcome project perfectionism:
1. Set realistic goals.
If you set unrealistic goals for yourself, it will be impossible to meet them and you’ll always feel like you’re falling short. Instead, set realistic goals that are achievable. This will help you stay focused and motivated while working on your project.
2. Take breaks.
Working non-stop towards your goal is not sustainable and will only lead to burnout. Make sure to take breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. This will help you come back to your work with fresh energy and new ideas.
Delegate tasks.
Trying to do everything yourself is a recipe for disaster. Learn to delegate tasks so that others can help you with the workload. This will take some of the pressure off of you and allow you to focus on the most important aspects of the project.
Give yourself grace. No one is perfect and mistakes are bound to happen. Don’t be too hard on yourself for not meeting your expectations. Accept that you’re human and give yourself grace in moments of imperfection.
5. Celebrate successes.
Finally, it’s important to celebrate your successes along the way. This will help you stay motivated and remind you of how far you’ve come despite any setbacks or delays.
– Set Clear Goals & Objectives As a Perfectionist
As a perfectionist, it’s easy to get bogged down in the details of your project and lose sight of the bigger picture. That’s why it’s important to set clear goals and objectives for your project before you start. This will help you stay focused and on track, and make it easier to measure your progress along the way.
When setting goals, be specific about what you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it. For example, rather than setting a goal to “finish my project,” set a goal to “finish my project by X date.” This will give you a clear target to work towards and help keep you accountable.
Similarly, be specific when defining objectives for your project. Objectives should be measurable so that you can track your progress towards them. For example, rather than setting an objective to “improve my website,” set an objective to “increase website traffic by X percent.” This way, you’ll have a tangible way to gauge your success.
By taking the time to set clear goals and objectives for your project, you’ll save yourself time and frustration in the long run. You’ll know exactly what needs to be done, and when it needs to be done by, which will make it easier to stay on track and get the job done right.
– Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
As a perfectionist, it’s easy to get caught up in the details and lose sight of the bigger picture. It’s important to remember that progress, not perfection, is what counts.
Here are some tips for staying focused on progress:
Set realistic goals. If your goal is to create the perfect project, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Instead, set realistic goals that you can achieve.
Take small steps. Perfectionists tend to want to do everything at once and do it perfectly. This can lead to overwhelm and paralysis. Instead, take small steps and focus on one thing at a time.
Don’t strive for perfection. Strive for excellence instead. Excellence is achievable, whereas perfection is not. Aiming for excellence will help you stay motivated and focused on your goal.
4. Be flexible. Things rarely go according to plan, so be prepared to adjust your plans as needed. Remember that progress is more important than perfection.
5 . Celebrate your accomplishments . Acknowledge each step you make toward your goal, no matter how small it may seem. This will help you stay motivated and keep perspective on your progress
– Break Down Tasks & Take Breaks As a Perfectionist
Assuming that you want a detailed content section for the subheading “1. – Break Down Tasks & Take Breaks” of the blog article “From Perfectionist to Productive: Tips for Managing Your Projects Better”:
When you’re feeling overwhelmed by a project, it can be helpful to break it down into smaller tasks. This will make the project seem more manageable and less daunting. It’s also important to take breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Stepping away from your work will help you to clear your head and come back refreshed.
– Prioritize Your Workload
As a perfectionist, it can be easy to get bogged down in the details of your projects and to try to do everything at once. However, this can lead to overwhelm and ultimately decreased productivity. To avoid this, it is important to prioritize your workload and focus on one task at a time.
To do this, start by making a list of all the tasks you need to complete for your project. Then, rank them in order of importance. Once you have done this, you can start working on the most important tasks first and save the less important ones for later.
By prioritizing your workload, you will be able to get more done in less time and will avoid feeling overwhelmed by your projects.
– Celebrate Accomplishments
It’s important to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how big or small. This will help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. Here are a few ideas for celebrating your accomplishments:
-Share your successes with friends and family. This will help you stay accountable and also let others know what you’re up to.
-Write about your successes in a journal or blog. This is a great way to track your progress and reflect on your achievements.
-Reward yourself! Treat yourself to something special after completing a major project or goal. This could be anything from a new outfit to a day at the spa.
Conclusion
Being organized and productive is a skill that can be acquired with practice. Taking the time to learn how to manage projects better through planning, prioritizing, and delegating can help you work smarter rather than harder. By learning from your mistakes and adjusting accordingly, you can move from perfectionist to productive in no time. With these 5 tips for managing projects better, hopefully you feel more confident about taking on your next project and kickstart it towards success!

The AIDA Model: Proven Framework for Creating Interest in Your Product or Service
Tumblr media
Capturing the attention of potential customers and guiding them through the journey towards making a purchase is a challenging task. However, there is a time-tested framework that can help businesses effectively convert strangers into loyal customers: the AIDA model. The AIDA model is a marketing framework that describes the four stages a customer goes through before making a purchasing decision. This proven methodology, which stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action, provides a roadmap for creating compelling marketing campaigns and sales strategies. In this article, we'll explore the power of the AIDA model and how businesses can leverage it to achieve remarkable conversion rates.
Attention: Grabbing the Strangers' Interest
The first step in the AIDA model is capturing the attention of your target audience. This requires crafting attention-grabbing headlines, eye-catching visuals, and compelling opening statements. By understanding your customers' pain points and desires, you can create content that resonates with them, making it more likely for them to engage with your brand.
Example: A clothing brand creates a captivating video advertisement featuring a celebrity wearing their latest collection
Interest: Captivating the Audience
Once you have their attention, it's vital to maintain their interest. Provide valuable information, demonstrate your expertise, and showcase the unique benefits your product or service offers. This is the phase where you build trust and credibility, showcasing how your offering solves their problems or improves their lives.
Example: This can be done by providing information about the benefits of your product, sharing customer testimonials, or running a contest or giveaway.
Desire: Creating an Emotional Connection
To convert prospects into customers, you must evoke desire within them. Highlight the benefits, demonstrate the value, and evoke emotions through storytelling. By painting a vivid picture of the positive outcomes they can achieve by choosing your product or service, you create a strong desire for what you have to offer.
Example: An eco-friendly skincare brand shares a heartwarming story of a customer who struggled with sensitive skin for years.
Action: Facilitating the Decision-Making Process
The final stage of the AIDA model is to encourage action. Provide clear and compelling calls-to-action, making it easy for your audience to take the next step. This could involve signing up for a free trial, making a purchase, or subscribing to a newsletter. Make the process seamless, removing any barriers that may hinder their decision-making.
Example: An e-commerce store offers a limited-time discount code and prominently displays a prominent "Buy Now" button on their website, encouraging visitors to make a purchase and enjoy the exclusive savings.
The AIDA model is a powerful tool that can help you increase your sales and achieve your marketing goals.

An adversarial iMessage client for Android
Tumblr media
Adversarial interoperability is one of the most reliable ways to protect tech users from predatory corporations: that's when a technologist reverse-engineers an existing product to reconfigure or mod it (interoperability) in ways its users like, but which its manufacturer objects to (adversarial):
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability
"Adversarial interop" is a mouthful, so at EFF, we coined the term "competitive compatibility," or comcom, which is a lot easier to say and to spell.
Scratch any tech success and you'll find a comcom story. After all, when a company turns its screws on its users, it's good business to offer an aftermarket mod that loosens them again. HP's $10,000/gallon inkjet ink is like a bat-signal for third-party ink companies. When Mercedes announces that it's going to sell you access to your car's accelerator pedal as a subscription service, that's like an engraved invitation to clever independent mechanics who'll charge you a single fee to permanently unlock that "feature":
https://www.techdirt.com/2023/12/05/carmakers-push-forward-with-plans-to-make-basic-features-subscription-services-despite-widespread-backlash/
Comcom saved giant tech companies like Apple. Microsoft tried to kill the Mac by rolling out a truly cursèd version of MS Office for MacOS. Mac users (5% of the market) who tried to send Word, Excel or Powerpoint files to Windows users (95% of the market) were stymied: their files wouldn't open, or they'd go corrupt. Tech managers like me started throwing the graphic designer's Mac and replacing it with a Windows box with a big graphics card and Windows versions of Adobe's tools.
Comcom saved Apple's bacon. Apple reverse-engineered MS's flagship software suite and made a comcom version, iWork, whose Pages, Numbers and Keynote could flawlessly read and write MS's Word, Excel and Powerpoint files:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/06/adversarial-interoperability-reviving-elegant-weapon-more-civilized-age-slay
It's tempting to think of iWork as benefiting Apple users, and certainly the people who installed and used it benefited from it. But Windows users also benefited from iWork. The existence of iWork meant that Windows users could seamlessly collaborate on and share files with their Mac colleagues. IWork didn't just add a new feature to the Mac ("read and write files that originated with Windows users") – it also added a feature to Windows: "collaborate with Mac users."
Every pirate wants to be an admiral. Though comcom rescued Apple from a monopolist's sneaky attempt to drive it out of business, Apple – now a three trillion dollar company – has repeatedly attacked comcom when it was applied to Apple's products. When Apple did comcom, that was progress. When someone does comcom to Apple, that's piracy.
Apple has many tools at its disposal that Microsoft lacked in the early 2000s. Radical new interpretations of existing copyright, contract, patent and trademark law allows Apple – and other tech giants – to threaten rivals who engage in comcom with both criminal and civil penalties. That's right, you can go to prison for comcom these days. No wonder Jay Freeman calls this "felony contempt of business model":
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/09/lead-me-not-into-temptation/#chamberlain
Take iMessage, Apple's end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) instant messaging tool. Apple customers can use iMessage to send each other private messages that can't be read or altered by third parties – not cops, not crooks, not even Apple. That's important, because when private messaging systems get hacked, bad things happen:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_celebrity_nude_photo_leak
But Apple has steadfastly refused to offer an iMessage app for non-Apple systems. If you're an Apple customer holding a sensitive discussion with an Android user, Apple refuses to offer you a tool to maintain your privacy. Those messages are sent "in the clear," over the 38-year-old SMS protocol, which is trivial to spy on and disrupt.
Apple sacrifices its users' security and integrity in the hopes that they will put pressure on their friends to move into Apple's walled garden. As CEO Tim Cook told a reporter: if you want to have secure communications with your mother, buy her an iPhone:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tim-cook-says-buy-mom-210347694.html
Last September, a 16-year old high school student calling himself JJTech published a technical teardown of iMessage, showing how any device could send and receive encrypted messages with iMessage users, even without an Apple ID:
https://jjtech.dev/reverse-engineering/imessage-explained/
JJTech even published code to do this, in an open source library called Pypush:
https://github.com/JJTech0130/pypush
In the weeks since, Beeper has been working to productize JJTech's code, and this week, they announced Beeper Mini, an Android-based iMessage client that is end-to-end encrypted:
https://beeper.notion.site/How-Beeper-Mini-Works-966cb11019f8444f90baa314d2f43a54
Beeper is known for a multiprotocol chat client built on Matrix, allowing you to manage several kinds of chat from a single app. These multiprotocol chats have been around forever. Indeed, iMessage started out as one – when it was called "iChat," it supported Google Talk and Jabber, another multiprotocol tool. Other tools like Pidgin have kept the flame alive for decades, and have millions of devoted users:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/07/tower-babel-how-public-interest-internet-trying-save-messaging-and-banish-big
But iMessage support has remained elusive. Last month, Nothing launched Sunchoice, a disastrous attempt to bring iMessage to Android, which used Macs in a data-center to intercept and forward messages to Android users, breaking E2EE and introducing massive surveillance risks:
https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/21/23970740/sunbird-imessage-app-shut-down-privacy-nothing-chats-phone-2
Beeper Mini does not have these defects. The system encrypts and decrypts messages on the Android device itself, and directly communicates with Apple's servers. It gathers some telemetry for debugging, and this can be turned off in preferences. It sends a single SMS to Apple's servers during setup, which changes your device's bubble from green to blue, so that Apple users now correctly see your device as a secure endpoint for iMessage communications.
Beeper Mini is now available in Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beeper.ima&hl=en_US
Now, this is a high-stakes business. Apple has a long history of threatening companies like Beeper over conduct like this. And Google has a long history deferring to those threats – as it did with OG App, a superior third-party Instagram app that it summarily yanked after Meta complained:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/05/battery-vampire/#drained
But while iMessage for Android is good for Android users, it's also very good for Apple customers, who can now get the privacy and security guarantees of iMessage for all their contacts, not just the ones who bought the same kind of phone as they did. The stakes for communications breaches have never been higher, and antitrust scrutiny on Big Tech companies has never been so intense.
Apple recently announced that it would add RCS support to iOS devices (RCS is a secure successor to SMS):
https://9to5mac.com/2023/11/16/apple-rcs-coming-to-iphone/
Early word from developers suggests that this support will have all kinds of boobytraps. That's par for the course with Apple, who love to announce splashy reversals of their worst policies – like their opposition to right to repair – while finding sneaky ways to go on abusing its customers:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/22/vin-locking/#thought-differently
The ball is in Apple's court, and, to a lesser extent, in Google's. As part of the mobile duopoly, Google has joined with Apple in facilitating the removal of comcom tools from its app store. But Google has also spent millions on an ad campaign shaming Apple for exposing its users to privacy risks when talking to Android users:
https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/21/23883609/google-rcs-message-apple-iphone-ipager-ad
While we all wait for the other shoe to drop, Android users can get set up on Beeper Mini, and technologists can kick the tires on its code libraries and privacy guarantees.

If you’ve rented an apartment in the US in the past several years, you may have had the sense that the game was rigged: Prices creep up not only at your building but at others throughout the city, seemingly in lockstep. A new civil lawsuit brought by the US Department of Justice today alleges that in many cases it’s not just in your head—and that a single company’s algorithm is to blame.
That company is RealPage, a Texas-based firm that provides commercial revenue management software for landlords. In other words, it helps set the prices of apartments. But it does so, the DOJ alleges in its lawsuit, by effectively helping its clients cheat; landlords feed rental rate and lease terms into the system, and the RealPage algorithm in turn spits out a suggested price that enables coordination and hinders competition.
“By feeding sensitive data into a sophisticated algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, RealPage has found a modern way to violate a century-old law through systematic coordination of rental housing prices,” deputy attorney general Lisa Monaco said in a statement.
RealPage’s reach is broad. It controls 80 percent of the market for software of its kind, which in turn is used to set prices of around 3 million units across the country, according to the DOJ. It already faces multiple lawsuits, including one from the state of Arizona and another in Washington, DC, where RealPage software is allegedly used to price more than 90 percent of units in large apartment buildings. RealPage’s algorithmic pricing first gained broader attention when a 2022 ProPublica investigation detailed how the company’s YieldStar software works.
The DOJ civil lawsuit, which was joined by the attorneys general of eight states, is a significant escalation in legal action against the company. It’s also a first for the DOJ, according to officials speaking on background during a call to discuss the complaint. While the government had previously filed criminal charges against an Amazon seller for algorithm-enabled price-fixing, this is the first civil action in which the algorithm itself, the Justice Department official says, was effectively the means of the violation.
The complaint itself quotes RealPage executives allegedly acknowledging anticompetitive aspects of its product. “There is greater good in everybody succeeding versus essentially trying to compete against one another in a way that actually keeps the entire industry down,” one RealPage executive allegedly wrote.
RealPage has repeatedly denied any allegations of antitrust violations, going so far as to publish a six-page digital pamphlet that claims to tell “the Real Story” about its products, along with an extensive FAQ page on a dedicated public policy website. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Attacks on the industry’s revenue management are based on demonstrably false information,” one section of that site reads. “RealPage revenue management software benefits both housing providers and residents.”
“We are disappointed that, after multiple years of education and cooperation on the antitrust matters concerning RealPage, the DOJ has chosenthis moment to pursue a lawsuit that seeks to scapegoat pro-competitive technology that has been used responsibly for years,” said Jennifer Bowcock, senior vice president of communications and creative at RealPage, in an emailed statement. “RealPage’s revenue management software is purposely built to be legally compliant, and we have a long history of working constructively with the DOJ to show that."
The DOJ disagrees. “Algorithms don’t exist in a law-free zone,” said Monaco in a press conference to discuss the case. “Training a machine to break the law is still breaking the law.”
In this case, the complaint alleges that those algorithms consistently drove rental prices upward. “RealPage’s software tends to maximize price increases, minimize price decreases, and maximize landlords’ pricing power,” said the DOJ in a press release. RealPage also doesn’t just recommend prices; in many cases, it actively sets them.
“RealPage actively polices landlords’ compliance with those recommendations,” said US attorney general Merrick Garland in today’s press conference. “A large number of landlords effectively agree to outsource their pricing decisions to RealPage by using an ‘auto-accept’ setting that effectively permits RealPage to determine the price a renter will pay.”
The DOJ also claims RealPage has created a “self-reinforcing feedback loop” with its data intake and pricing recommendations structure that also gives it an alleged monopoly in the apartment revenue management software industry. Any competitor who plays by the rules, the DOJ claims, is at a distinct disadvantage.
The Justice Department has spent the past several years staffing up with technologists and data scientists, better enabling them to “interrogate the code,” as multiple officials described the investigative process. While this is the first major algorithmic collusion case, DOJ officials suggested it would be far from the last.

Game of Codes: HRMantra's Legal Crusade Against Darwinbox's Alleged Corporate Raid
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In a high-stakes clash within the tech realm, HRMantra Software Pvt Ltd has thrown down the legal gauntlet against its ex-employee, Nasreen Shaikh, and the formidable trio behind Darwinbox Digital Solutions Pvt Ltd – Chaitanya Peddi, Jayant Paleti, and Rohit Chennamaneni. The FIR, wielding Sections 406, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, and Sections 43 (a), (b), and (g) with 66, 66-B, 66-C, 72, 72-A of the Information Technology Act 2000, unveils a gripping saga of corporate intrigue and alleged betrayal.
Backdrop:
For over two decades, HRMantra has been a pioneer in developing and marketing HR and payroll software, investing substantial resources and building a vast clientele across the nation. However, the peace was shattered when Darwinbox allegedly began aggressively recruiting HRMantra's experienced professionals in defiance of contractual clauses barring them from joining competitors in the HR and payroll software domain for two years.
Legal Thunderstorm:
The FIR details how Darwinbox purportedly ignored the contractual bindings set by HRMantra, breaching appointment letters, employee undertakings, bond agreements, and full and final settlement terms. The legal stipulations explicitly prohibit ex-employees from divulging trade secrets, client lists, employee details, and other confidential information or tarnishing HRMantra's image in any media.
Business Carnage:
The aftermath of Darwinbox's alleged actions has been devastating for HRMantra. The FIR alleges that not only Nasreen Shaikh but eight other employees joined Darwinbox, strategically targeting HRMantra's clients. This has resulted in a substantial loss of clients, a significant hit to revenue amounting to crores of Rupees, and a dent in HRMantra's once-impeccable brand reputation.
Founder's Agony:
The toll on HRMantra's founder, Mr. Pankaj Bhargav, has been more than financial. Seeking justice, he initially approached the police in August 2021, only to be redirected to the court for resolution. After an arduous legal battle, the court finally issued an order on January 2, 2024, compelling the Charkop police station to register the FIR on February 20, 2024.
Conclusion:
As the legal drama unfolds, the technology and business communities are on the edge of their seats, anticipating the potential ripple effects on corporate ethics and employee transitions. HRMantra's decisive legal stance against Darwinbox's founders underscores the lengths companies will go to protect their assets and uphold their integrity in the cutthroat world of corporate competition. The outcome of this clash could reshape the landscape, setting benchmarks for ethical business conduct and employee loyalty in the tech industry.

So NFTgate has now hit tumblr - I made a thread about it on my twitter, but I'll talk a bit more about it here as well in slightly more detail. It'll be a long one, sorry! Using my degree for something here. This is not intended to sway you in one way or the other - merely to inform so you can make your own decision and so that you aware of this because it will happen again, with many other artists you know.
Let's start at the basics: NFT stands for 'non fungible token', which you should read as 'passcode you can't replicate'. These codes are stored in blocks in what is essentially a huge ledger of records, all chained together - a blockchain. Blockchain is encoded in such a way that you can't edit one block without editing the whole chain, meaning that when the data is validated it comes back 'negative' if it has been tampered with. This makes it a really, really safe method of storing data, and managing access to said data. For example, verifying that a bank account belongs to the person that says that is their bank account.
For most people, the association with NFT's is bitcoin and Bored Ape, and that's honestly fair. The way that used to work - and why it was such a scam - is that you essentially purchased a receipt that said you owned digital space - not the digital space itself. That receipt was the NFT. So, in reality, you did not own any goods, that receipt had no legal grounds, and its value was completely made up and not based on anything. On top of that, these NFTs were purchased almost exclusively with cryptocurrency which at the time used a verifiation method called proof of work, which is terrible for the environment because it requires insane amounts of electricity and computing power to verify. The carbon footprint for NFTs and coins at this time was absolutely insane.
In short, Bored Apes were just a huge tech fad with the intention to make a huge profit regardless of the cost, which resulted in the large market crash late last year. NFTs in this form are without value.
However, NFTs are just tech by itself more than they are some company that uses them. NFTs do have real-life, useful applications, particularly in data storage and verification. Research is being done to see if we can use blockchain to safely store patient data, or use it for bank wire transfers of extremely large amounts. That's cool stuff!
So what exactly is Käärijä doing? Kä is not selling NFTs in the traditional way you might have become familiar with. In this use-case, the NFT is in essence a software key that gives you access to a digital space. For the raffle, the NFT was basically your ticket number. This is a very secure way of doing so, assuring individuality, but also that no one can replicate that code and win through a false method. You are paying for a legimate product - the NFT is your access to that product.
What about the environmental impact in this case? We've thankfully made leaps and bounds in advancing the tech to reduce the carbon footprint as well as general mitigations to avoid expanding it over time. One big thing is shifting from proof of work verification to proof of space or proof of stake verifications, both of which require much less power in order to work. It seems that Kollekt is partnered with Polygon, a company that offers blockchain technology with the intention to become climate positive as soon as possible. Numbers on their site are very promising, they appear to be using proof of stake verification, and all-around appear more interested in the tech than the profits it could offer.
But most importantly: Kollekt does not allow for purchases made with cryptocurrency, and that is the real pisser from an environmental perspective. Cryptocurrency purchases require the most active verification across systems in order to go through - this is what bitcoin mining is, essentially. The fact that this website does not use it means good things in terms of carbon footprint.
But why not use something like Patreon? I can't tell you. My guess is that Patreon is a monthly recurring service and they wanted something one-time. Kollekt is based in Helsinki, and word is that Mikke (who is running this) is friends with folks on the team. These are all contributing factors, I would assume, but that's entirely an assumption and you can't take for fact.
Is this a good thing/bad thing? That I also can't tell you - you have to decide that for yourself. It's not a scam, it's not crypto, just a service that sits on the blockchain. But it does have higher carbon output than a lot of other services do, and its exact nature is not publicly disclosed. This isn't intended to sway you to say one or the other, but merely to give you the proper understanding of what NFTs are as a whole and what they are in this particular case so you can make that decision for yourself.
