Fuminori Abe & Takuya Nomura vs. Kazusada Higuchi & Ryota Nakatsu, BASARA 251 ~ Utage, June 21, 2024
A common refrain in the lament about professional wrestling in 2024 is that tag team wrestling, a unique format that sets wrestling apart from other combat sports dramas, is at a very weak state. (2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 MMA, for example, is very wacky, but it's more of a free for all than tag team wrestling, which is regulated by the rules around tagging your partner and colored by the drama that circumventing those rules creates.) When I hear that refrain, I think about how tag teams have been a consistently highlighted aspect of Japanese wrestling, even in 2024. From Dragon Bane and Alpha Wolf to the factions in New Japan, Stardom, and Dragongate to the teams like the Astronauts, tag team wrestling doesn’t seem quite as moribund as critics might claim.
Fuminori Abe and Takuya Nomura, the Astronauts, exploded in prominence after their highly rated singles match at their produce show in October 2023. Based on that match's reputation, GCW brought them to the United States; GCW even asked them to replicate the singles match at Bloodsport X. DPW also brought Fuminori Abe, the Buddhist priest and slightly younger member of the duo, to the US to face Roderick Strong in a well regarded singles match this year.
Nonetheless, Abe and Nomura have done most of their work this year as the Astronauts in Japan as the traveling tag team, stopping in AJPW, DDT, BJW, BASARA, 666, and a variety of independent produce shows. With such a variety of venues and audiences, it must be tempting to find a formula and stick with it to make life easier for yourselves. Yet, every time I see the Astronauts at work, they seem to present a twist on the variation of their trademark high speed action, laced with humor, that keeps monotony from setting in on them.
In this case, I checked out Abe and Nomura against Ryota Nakatsu, who turned me off immediately by wrestling most of the match in a t-shirt three sizes too large, and Kazusada Higuchi, the ex-sumo wrestler whose career feels like it should have been more than what it currently is even though he's held every KO-D championship in DDT. True to the Astronauts’ formula, the match was worked at a high pace with lots of action and intensity between the two teams, and it was punctuated with a very Three Stooges inspired segment where Abe, Nomura, Nakatsu, and Higuchi paired off to hit each other and Nakatsu kept asking Higuchi to switch partners because Abe and Nomura were hitting him too hard. That was also when Abe acted out that punching Higuchi was like hitting a wall, which was tremendous.
I think I would put this in the category of "worth your time because it's a very fun match" and not in the "one of the best matches of the year." Still, this is an easy recommendation, especially if you just want fast action before an excited crowd.

I haven’t seen Isami san wrestle for the longest time. I miss the days when BASARA was part of Wrestle Universe, at least for the easy accessibility. Nico Pro does not play well with my system.

As every August I will once again be away for 10 days this month starting on August 8th through August 19th. Behold! I’ve been ambushed by a new obsession and I am utterly enchanted! If you haven’t seen him yet then this is Isami Kodaka. He has the most gorgeous dark eyes and quite phenomenally furry eyebrows and every time I see him he’s either bleeding, smoking or drinking but when he laughs he shows his bottom teeth and dimples and I luuuuuuuurve him! 😍

More Promotions Cancelling Or Altering Shows In Wake Of New State Of Emergency
Earlier I’d written that Pro Wrestling BASARA had cancelled an upcoming show in Itabashi Ward in Tokyo on 5/5/2021 due to the new state of emergency. I was in a bit of a hurry at the time to go get my son to his vaccination. Since then I’ve learned other promotions are cancelling, or changing, their shows as well.
All Japan Pro Wrestling: They are in the midst of Champion Carnival. Their next three shows are on 4/25, 4/29 and 5/3/2021 at Korakuen Hall. Those will go on, however they will be empty-arena shows. They are due to be streamed on AJPW.TV if you are subscribed to it.
DDT / Tokyo Joshi Pro / Ganbare Pro: DDT have several different offshoots under their umbrella, all being affected in different ways. DDT’s shows on 5/4 and 5/9 will be held without fans in Korakuen Hall. TJPW’s shows on 5/1 and 5/5 will be held with no audience, but their venue is to be determined. Their show on 5/9 will be postponed. Ganbare Pro’s upcoming events on 5/1 and 5/8 have been cancelled outright. DDT says their shows on 4/25 in Nagano and 5/5 in Hamamatsu will go ahead as planned.
Dragon Gate: Despite their annual Dead Or Alive show coming very soon, Dragon Gate are having to cancel a whole host of shows: 5/1 in Osaka, 5/2 & 5/3 in Kyoto, 5/7 in Tokyo, 5/8 in Shizuoka and finally 5/9 in Kobe. Their shows tomorrow in Takaoka, 4/29 in Ishikawa and 5/4 in Tsushima are unaffected by the current state of emergency. Dead Or Alive is still due to take place on 5/5/2021, in Aichi Nagoya Dolphin’s Arena. Aichi was listed as being under quasi-emergency earlier. This show will feature the annual Dead Or Alive cage apuestas match, and will also be continuing the countdown to the retirement of “Speedstar” Masato Yoshino, which is supposed to take place at their annual Kobe World show later this year.
Pro Wrestling NOAH: It turns out their webmaster was lazy, and the big NOAH The GLORY show in Nagoya on 4/29 is a full 8-match card, starting at 3pm JST. That is followed by two dates in Tokyo Korakuen Hall on 5/2 and 5/3/2021. They are still showing tickets for sale on NOAH’s official site, however they perhaps have not made any changes yet.
This is all I’ve been able to divine so far. I am sure there are other indies that are being affected by this too (eg. Big Japan, FREEDOMS, 2AW, etc.). I can’t imagine the NOAH Korakuen shows going on with fans, if AJPW, Dragon Gate and DDT have all had to change plans. And the same will likely go for NJPW with the Road To Wrestle Grand Slam shows on 5/8, 5/10 and 5/11 in Korakuen Hall as well. Stay tuned.
