Prix de Thornolie: 25 May 1850, 13:40
Monseigneur Oliver: Eleanor! Eleanor, wait!
Mademoiselle Eleanor: ...
Monseigneur Oliver: Eleanor, s'il vous plaît!
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Why should I? I told you I would not join you today. I made it quite clear! And yet you refuse to disemble!
Monseigneur Oliver: And I know you well enough to know your rejection of my invitation was out of character. Something has clearly happened and you refuse to tell me what it is.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: [Scoffs] Honestly, you are so full of yourself.
Monseigneur Oliver: And you have never been a good liar.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Why can't you just let it go and accept my rejection!
Monseigneur Oliver: Absolutely not.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: You are impossible! Why are you so unable to accept things as they are?
Monseigneur Oliver: You know why.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Oliver, I-
Monseigneur Oliver: Je t'aime.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: ...
Monseigneur Oliver: Je t'aime, Eleanor. I've been in love with you for what feels like centuries. If one were to ask me of my favourite colour, I would spend each breath describing the facets of emerald that shimmer from your eyes. Ask me of my favourite sound and I would explain how the harmonies of your voice create the most angelic of melodies. Ask of what brings me joy and I would smile, thinking of nothing and no one but you. And if one were to ask me what love truly is...all I would do is whisper your name on my lips.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: ...
Monseigneur Oliver: Do you truly not see what I see in you? So blind to your strength of character, your keen mind, your gentle heart? I see all of it, even when you cannot see it yourself.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: I-
Monseigneur Oliver: I know you're scared, ma dulcinée...scared of this...of us...but I will never allow anyone to hurt you. I'd never be able to go on living if I were to lose you. You mean more to me than life itself. If you were to trust in anything, trust in that.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Oliver-

Madame Adelaide: Douairière, I did not expect to see you!
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: Madame, what a pleasure! Might I introduce you to mon fils, le Comte de Deauville. I don't believe either of you have had the pieasure.
Comte de Deauville: Not properly at least...Bonne journée.
Madame Adelaide: Oh....bonne journée, Monsieur.
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: And of course you know le Marquis de Beauvais and Mademoiselle Fleury.
Marquis de Beauvaus/Mademoiselle Fleury: Madame.
Madame Adelaide: I do hope you all are enjoying the races. The weather certainly showed up to offer us all a lovely afternoon.
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: En effet. I always look forward to this time of year. Never fails to remind me of my dear Gustave. The races were always his favourite activity. Something he and mon fils have in common.
Comte de Deauville: Mère, I am sure la Madame has no desire to be bombarded by your reminiscence.
Madame Adelaide: Au contraire, Monsieur. Perhaps it may surprise you what information I wish to be bombarded with.
Comte de Deauville: That is certainly surprising.
Madame Adelaide: And what makes you say this?
Comte de Deauville: I simply never imagined la Madame Royale had any care for the lives of all those beneath her.
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: Arthur!
Madame Adelaide: What a curious observation. It seems you are not as observant as you claim to be.
Comte de Deauville: I beg your pardon?
Madame Adelaide: Oh, have I offended you? If you were as observant as you suggest, you would know I spend a great deal of my time with women in need of companionship. If you were as observant, you would be aware I call upon votre mère at least once every week to offer her said companionship, so she might have someone to talk with. Especially when her only child would rather spend all his time away from home and neglecting his family-
Marquis de Beauvais: Pardonnez-moi, Madame, but I'm afraid ma sœur and I must take our leave.
Madame Adelaide: Of course.
Comte de Deauville: We shall join you. Mère, we are leaving. [Leaves]
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: Oh, I do apologise, Madame. Coming to the races is always a difficult journey for him. Reminds him too much of son père.
Madame Adelaide: Consider it forgotten. Perhaps now he will consider his actions and spend more time at home with you.
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: You are a kind soul. As much as I hope you are right, I'm not sure it'll make any difference. Though I cannot deny it gets lonely in that big old house when he's not around.
Madame Adelaide: You'll have to excuse me, Douairière. I know my family are preparing to leave and they'll be wondering where I am.
Douairière Comtesse de Deauville: Of course. And please, Madame, try not to judge mon fils too harshly. Underneath that callous exterior is a heart of pure gold. He simply hates for others to see it. [Curtseys and Leaves]
Mademoiselle Maybelline: How curious...
Madame Adelaide: If you have something to say, just say it.
Mademoiselle Maybelline: I couldn't help but notice the way le Comte de Deauville looked at you before he stormed off.
Madame Adelaide: Quoi?
Mademoiselle Maybelline: I could have sworn I spotted a smile-
Madame Adelaide: Don't be absurd. Are you sure he was not simply looking at you?
Mademoiselle Maybelline: Perhaps...but would it be so terrible if he did?

Monseigneur Oliver: Shall we?
Mademoiselle Aurora: Quoi?
Monseigneur Oliver: I need you to trust me.
Mademoiselle Aurora: And why would I trust you? Considering you had no hand in your invitation, just as I had no hand in accepting it.
Monseigneur Oliver: As ever, you are observant-
Mademoiselle Aurora: And you are a fool.
Monseigneur Oliver: [Agitated Exhale] I suggest you take a moment to listen before you start spewing off more of your hatred. Because if you'd allow me to finish, I could tell you I have secured an arrangement, one I believe which we both will benefit.
Mademoiselle Aurora: And what arrangement would that be?
Monseigneur Oliver: As I mentioned before, trust me.

Monseigneur Oliver: Any luck?
Comte de Montavin: What do you think?
Monseigneur Oliver: [Sighs] I'm sorry, mon cousin.
Comte de Montavin: [Scoffs] Not sure why you should be.
Monseigneur Oliver: Don’t take your frustrations out on me-
Comte de Montavin: Like you didn’t take your frustrations about a certain little wallflower out on me in our last fencing session?
Monseigneur Oliver: Gaston-
Comte de Montavin: Why do you even bother? She clearly has her reservations, so why don’t you? Why are you so insistent when you’ve not even kissed her? At least I know what awaits me since-
Monseigneur Oliver: [Whisper-Shouts] Assez!
Comte de Montavin: Face it, Oliver. You are more than naive if you think this little plan of yours will work. You are a fool.
Monseigneur Oliver: The only fool here is the one who played with fire and got burned. Remember that when you’re watching Fate walk down the aisle toward you. [Leaves]

Mademoiselle Aurora: Pierre, s'il vous plaît. You must know none of this was of my making.
Marquis de Solomont: Calm yourself. After speaking with le Monseigneur, I know. It's alright.
Mademoiselle Aurora: I cannot imagine the pain I caused you. It was utter agony to send you my rejection.
Marquis de Solomont: Is that so?
Mademoiselle Aurora: Oui...ma mère wasted no time in making sure I sent you that letter...and used all means imaginable to make it happen...
Marquis de Solomont: Are you saying she...hurts you?
Mademoiselle Aurora: Oh...I...non...
Marquis de Solomont: Ma chère, all I want to do is keep you safe and to help. You must tell me if there is more than meets the eye in regards to ta mère.
Mademoiselle Aurora: She is...quite forceful...All I really want is to escape it all.
Marquis de Solomont: Do you mean it?
Mademoiselle Aurora: Of course I do, but there's no way I could-
Marquis de Solomont: We could go to Saut de Jade.
Mademoiselle Aurora: Saut de...are you saying what I think you are?
Marquis de Solomont: I cannot stand the idea of you being mistreated so shamefully. Allow me to protect you. To love you. To honour you....Marry me, Aurora. It is all I desire.
Mademoiselle Aurora: I...Oui...Oui! Of course I will marry you! But how will we travel to-
Marquis de Solomont: I'll settle all the arrangements, ma chère. We will marry. Whatever it takes.

Marquis de Solomont: Have you been to the races before?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Not since I was little. Mon père used to bring me along with Ernest when I was away from school. I do love horses.
Marquis de Solomont: And...have you ever partaken in all the festivities?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: I'm afraid, Monsieur, if ma mère were to discover I had ever taken a bet she would surely lock me away.
Marquis de Solomont: [Chuckles] I imagine a mademoiselle with a deep love of horses will at least have some knowledge of the sport to lend advice to those who do?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Of course. Ernest and Ol...
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Well, I've certainly been told a great deal.
Marquis de Solomont: Then tell me, what are your thoughts on him? I believe he goes by the name la Flamme de Minuit?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Oh...well...I've been told he is favoured to win, Monsieur.
Marquis de Solomont: Is he? Well then, perhaps we should get a closer look of the beast before the race? It may help us make our wagers.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: If...if you insist, Monsieur.

Comte de Montavin: I may have agreed to go along with announcing this engagement, but I did not agree to the arrangement where you expect me to wed in two days time! Surely this is unnecessary!
La Reine Arabella: All plans have already been settled, Gaston. You knew the price to pay for your...carelessness. You lost your chances of a more leisurely engagement when you put the reputation of this family at risk.
Comte de Montavin: You know as well as I if ma mère were alive she would not approve-
La Reine Arabella: Ma sœur would be ashamed. Ashamed to see the man her son grew up to become. You know nothing of what ta mère would or would not approve, so if I were you I would heed my next few words very carefully: If you wish to do anything to make ta mère proud, then I suggest you accept the fate you've bestowed upon yourself and do the noble thing. Preferably without any more fuss. [Walks Away]
Mademoiselle Giselle: Any luck?
Comte de Montavin: ...
Mademoiselle Giselle: Gaston?
Comte de Montavin: Non...we've run out of time.

Mademoiselle Aurora: Where are we going?
Monseigneur Oliver: [Sigh] What do you not understand about trust?
Mademoiselle Aurora: I told you...Monsieur-
Monseigneur Oliver: Ah, Rousseau. Your timing is impeccable.
Marquis de Solomont: Bonne journée, Monseigneur.
Mademoiselle Aurora: Quoi...What is happening?
Monseigneur Oliver: It came to our attention that too many were interfering in our respective situations. So we decided to put a stop to it.
Mademoiselle Aurora: Meaning?
Monseigneur Oliver: I trust all is in order, Rousseau?
Marquis de Solomont: Oui, Monseigneur.
Monseigneur Oliver: Mademoiselle Valery, bonne journée.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Monseigneur L'Épin.
Monseigneur Oliver: I shall leave you both to your own devices. Mademoiselle Valery, might I walk-

Château de Clèrisseau: 24 Mai 1850, 13:30
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: All I am trying to do is understand, Mignonne!
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: Not only have you rejected Oliver's invitation, but now you are refusing the proposal of le Vicomte? I've never been so unsettled by your actions as I was watching le Vicomte leave just now!
Mademoiselle Eleanor: A marriage with le Vicomte would never have worked, Maman.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: And Oliver? What of him?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Maman, s'il vous plaît....
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: [Sighs] I wish you would tell me what's wrong, Mignonne. You have no idea what it is to watch you suffer so, to know where your feelings truly lie yet watch you work so diligently to deny yourself your own happiness!
Mademoiselle Eleanor: There's nothing to say, Maman. It is best to let the matter lie.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: I cannot, Mignonne. Not when I-
Steward: Pardonnez-moi, Madame.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: Oui?
Steward: A caller has arrived for Mademoiselle Valery.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: Quoi?
Steward: A caller, Madame.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: I see...Well, we shall welcome him, of course.
Steward: Oui, Madame. [Leaves]
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Maman, what are you doing?
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: If you cannot explain your reasonings behind rejecting two impeccable matches, than we have no choice but consider other suitors.
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Maman-
Steward: Monsieur le Marquis de Solomont.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: Monsieur de Rousseau! This is certainly a pleasant surprise, To what do we owe such a pleasure?
Marquis de Solomont: I believe the pleasure to be entirely mine, Madame. I trust you both are enjoying this fine afternoon?
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: En effet. You caught us just in time. We were just discussing plans to take a walk about the park.
Marquis de Solomont: Is that so? What a coincidence. I came to ask if Mademoiselle Valery would happen to fancy just that. Would it be too presumptious to intrude on your plans?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Oh, I-
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: She would be honoured, I assure you.
Marquis de Solomont: Magnifique!
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: Shall we, then?
Marquis de Solomont: I have one more question to ask before we do, if you'll allow me? Just yesterday I heard you have yet to receive an invitation to tomorrow's Prix de Thornolie, and I wondered if you might accept mine?
Mademoiselle Eleanor: Oh...I suppose...you honour me, Monsieur.
Marquis de Solomont: Splendide! You have truly brighten my spirits, Mademoiselle Valery.
Duchesse de Clèrisseau: Well...what a turn of events this is. Shall we all be off then?
Marquis de Solomont: En effet. Mademoiselle?

Le Jardin d'Avigneux: 23 Mai 1850, 13:30
Madame Adelaide: And Ernest truly helped ton frère escort you home?
Mademoiselle Violette: Oui, it was quite an affair! I was waiting for Oscar outside the post office and idly standing by when he rushed right into me! The tumble was quite severe, I was so unsteady on my feet and he helped Oscar assist me home. Truly, I am just as stunned as you are, though why he was rushing about the square I have no idea.
Madame Adelaide: It appears I owe Ernest more credit than I currently afford him. He does always seem to surprise me.
Mademoiselle Maybelline: And are you well recovered? When I last came to call Oscar mentioned you were still terribly unwell.
Mademoiselle Violette: I assure you I am quite well, though Oscar is still in quite a state. If it wasn't for la Douairière I wouldn't have been allowed out for our weekly stroll!
Madame Maybelline: He's always been the...overprotective type. Mine would have left me on the sidewalk to rot.
Mademoiselle Violette: [Scoffs] Honestly, Maybelline...In all honestly I'm surprised he hasn't started breathing fire down the necks of every suitor who comes to call. Though I believe him too busy these days to notice.
Mademoiselle Maybelline: And what news from you, Adelaide? I hear Gaston is looking more weary with each passing day as his impending nuptials loom closer...
Mademoiselle Violette: Is that true? And here I thought the big conversation would be about Eleanor turning down le Monseigneur's invitation to join him at le Prix de Thornolie.
Mademoiselle Maybelline: Quoi? Where did you hear that?
Mademoiselle Violette: La Douairière, of course.
Mademoiselle Maybelline: Goodness. Is this true?
Mademoiselle Maybelline: Adelaide?
Mademoiselle Violette: Madame?
Madame Adelaide: Quoi?
Mademoiselle Violette: Are you alright?
Madame Adelaide: Oh...pardonnez-moi. I...I thought I saw...
Mademoiselle Violette: What did you see?
Madame Adelaide: I...It doesn't matter...
Mademoiselle Maybelline: Must you always keep us in sus-
Madame Adelaide: Violette...do you think ton frère will still allow you to attend the Prix de Thornolie?
Mademoiselle Violette: Oh...I...Well, if he even tries to refuse, all I have to do is write to la Douairière.
Madame Adelaide: And quite right, too.
Mademoiselle Violette: Are...are you sure you're alright?
Madame Adelaide: Of course, I am. Don't be ridiculous.
Mademoiselle Maybelline: Adelaide, you still have yet to answer my questions. Gaston certainly...

Maison de Solomont: 27 Mai 1850: 16:30
Steward: Marquis de Liroux et Mademoiselle Aubert.
Duchesse de Solomont: Monsieur, I was not expect-Mon Dieu!
Marquis de Liroux: Pardonnez-moi, Madame. I hope you'll forgive my intrusion on your afternoon. I did not want my sister to travel alone.
Duchesse de Solomont: It's...it's quite alright. Aurora, dear, what's happened?
Mademoiselle Aurora: It's nothing, Madame I-
Marquis de Liroux: Don’t lie, Aurora. She does not deserve your empathy.
Mademoiselle Aurora: I…ma mère-
Marquis de Solomont: Votre mère did this to you?
Mademoiselle Aurora: Pierre…non, I-
Marquis de Liroux: Oui. This is not the first instance, but this time she has gone too far.
Duchesse de Solomont: My dear, come have a seat. Maybelline, find Ravier and ask her to bring the salve.
Mademoiselle Aurora: I hope I haven’t spoiled your tea.
Duchesse de Solomont: Of course not.
Marquis de Liroux: Rousseau, a word?
Marquis de Solomont: I…
Mademoiselle Aurora: I’ll be alright.
Marquis de Solomont: I'll be right back.
Marquis de Liroux: Is it true?
Marquis de Solomont: Is what true?
Marquis de Liroux: Did you ask for my sister’s hand?
Marquis de Solomont: Are you going to reprimand me? Aurora deserves to live a life far from the hands of votre mère, especially after what I’ve just witnessed.
Marquis de Liroux: On the contrary, Rousseau, I’m here because I want my sister out of that house as well. The sooner the better.
Marquis de Solomont: I’m glad we can agree on something at least.
Marquis de Liroux: She cannot go back there. So if you’re serious about your intentions-
Marquis de Solomont: Saut de Jade.
Marquis de Liroux: Quoi?
Marquis de Solomont: Saut de Jade. I had my mother invite her to tea so I could take her to Saut de Jade tonight.
Marquis de Liroux: Does she know this?
Marquis de Solomont: Non. I planned to tell her as soon as she arrived.
Marquis de Liroux: And you’re certain she’ll be amenable?
Marquis de Solomont: Qui. We spoke of running away together during le Prix de Thornolie.
Marquis de Liroux: …Very well.
Marquis de Solomont: We have your blessing?
Marquis de Liroux: It’s unfortunately not the one you need, but considering neither ma mère ou mon père will offer you one, it’ll have to do.
Marquis de Solomont: Merci, Aubert.
Marquis de Liroux: All I ask is you take care of her. She’s had enough hardships, she doesn’t need more.
Marquis de Solomont: You have my word.

Manoir de Liroux: 27 Mai 1850, 13:00
Mademoiselle Aurora: Oh! It seems I've been invited to tea by la Duchesse de Solomont this afternoon.
Duchesse de Liroux: You are unavailable.
Mademoiselle Aurora: [Tucks Letter into Dress] Maman, it would be rude to decline, especially when I have no prior commitments.
Duchesse de Liroux: Don't be absurd, Aurora. We are days away from le Monseigneur's announcement. You will secure his proposal, and in order to do that you must focus on nothing else. You have no time for tea or any other frivolous activities.
Mademoiselle Aurora: [Scoffs] You are delusional if you believe he will propose to me.
Duchesse de Liroux: I do not suppose your defiance has anything to do with your little rendezvous the other day with a certain Marquis during le Prix de Thornolie?
Mademoiselle Aurora: I...I don't know what you mean...
Duchesse de Liroux: Do you really imagine me a fool? Lest you forget I am always watching you, so imagine my surprise when I spotted you, alone, without le Monseigneur on your arm and instead wrapped around-
Mademoiselle Aurora: Maman-ah!
Duchesse de Liroux: [Grabs Aurora by the Neck] Now, you listen, and you listen well.
Mademoiselle Aurora: Maman, s'il vous plaît!
Duchesse de Liroux: I will not see you tarnish this family's name and reputation. You think sneaking around will save you from your fate? Don't make me laugh. You will marry le Monseigneur. End of story. [Throws Aurora to the Floor]
Mademoiselle Aurora: [Cries] Maman...non....
Duchesse de Liroux: I'll allow you to accept this invitation, but I suggest you use this opportunity to finally cut ties with le Marquis. If you don't, you will suffer consequences unlike which you can imagine. [Leaves]
Marquis de Liroux: Aurora...
Mademoiselle Aurora: Go away....
Marquis de Liroux: Shhh....I'm right here. You'll be alright.

Le Cabinet du Roi, Palais de Thornolie: 28 Mai 1850, 12:15
Monseigneur Oliver: You summoned me, Père?
Le Roi Gaspard: Ah, oui. Come in, Oliver. I'd like to discuss something with you.
Monseigneur Oliver: I do hope you're finally going to inform me about this letter that has you all in a fluster.
Le Roi Gaspard: The matter has been dealt with.
Monseigneur Oliver: I see...and you're not intending to tell me anything else?
Le Roi Gaspard: You are correct.
Monseigneur Olive: Père-
Le Roi Gaspard: Stop making a fuss. I summoned you here to discuss your decision. You have not forgotten you will be declaring your proposal at la mascarade?
Monseigneur Oliver: Did you honestly bring me in here to discuss my proposal when this letter, a letter which has tied you and Maman all up in knots, has been the sole reason for your avoiding me until this very moment? You waste no time spending months preparing me to take your place, whenever that day may be, yet at the first real test you cast me aside! I have a right to know!
Le Roi Gaspard: Ça suffit! I will decide what is best, and if my decisions conclude you are to be kept from the conversation then you must trust there is a reason!
Monseigneur Oliver: Do you even hear yourself? You are always the one who says I must take a more active role in this family for the sake of the country, yet how is keeping me from the-
Steward: Le Duc de Clèrisseau et le Comte de Connier, Majesté.
Le Roi Gaspard: Quoi?! Can you not see I am in the middle of something?
Comte de Connier: I'm afraid this cannot wait, Monsieur.
Le Roi Gaspard: Oliver, leave us.
Monseigneur Oliver: I will not-
Le Roi Gaspard: Aller!
[Oliver Storms Off]
Le Roi Gaspard: What is it, Francois?
Comte de Connier: The messenger returned to Thornolia the evening of le Prix de Thornolie.
Le Roi Gaspard: Was the man arrested on return?
Duc de Clèrisseau: I'm afraid not...
Le Roi Gaspard: You let the man get away? Why was he not been arrested?
Comte de Connier: The messenger is dead, Monsieur. And the letter he carried...is gone.
