Bungalow Gardens: Landscaping Tips for Your Home
Bungalows, with their charming architecture and cozy interiors, often come with yards that are perfect for creating beautiful and functional gardens. Thoughtful landscaping can enhance the curb appeal, usability, and value of your bungalow. Here are some tips and ideas for designing bungalow gardens that complement your homeâs style and create inviting outdoor spaces.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9df4ed061828f59558fb46ae7fea7ef9/f8cb6f5fef0185f9-76/s540x810/4cf65ce4533fb5bc220bfc5643c1f2bdf789602a.jpg)
Creating Inviting Front Yards
The front yard is the first impression visitors get of your home. Designing an inviting and well-maintained front yard can significantly enhance your bungalow's curb appeal.
Pathways and Walkways
Create a welcoming entryway with well-defined pathways leading to your front door. Use materials that complement the bungalow's style, such as brick, stone, or gravel. Curved paths can add a touch of elegance and guide visitors through the garden.
Foundation Plantings
Foundation plantings, such as shrubs and perennials, soften the edges of the house and blend the home with the landscape. Choose plants that thrive in your local climate and consider using native species for a low-maintenance garden.
Porch Plantings
Enhance the look of your front porch with potted plants and hanging baskets. Choose a mix of flowers and greenery to add color and texture. Seasonal plants can keep the porch looking fresh and vibrant throughout the year.

Designing Functional Backyards
Backyards provide space for relaxation, entertainment, and outdoor activities. Designing a functional and aesthetically pleasing backyard can extend your living space and improve your quality of life.
Outdoor Living Areas
Create comfortable outdoor living areas with seating, dining, and lounging zones. Use durable and weather-resistant furniture that complements the style of your bungalow. Adding elements like a pergola, gazebo, or umbrella can provide shade and define different areas.
Garden Beds and Borders
Design garden beds and borders with a mix of perennials, annuals, and shrubs. Consider the colors, textures, and heights of plants to create visually appealing arrangements. Raised beds can add structure and make gardening easier.
Vegetable and Herb Gardens
Incorporate vegetable and herb gardens into your backyard to enjoy fresh produce and herbs. Raised beds, containers, or dedicated garden plots can be used to grow a variety of plants. Position the garden in a sunny spot and ensure easy access for maintenance.

Sustainable Landscaping Practices
Sustainable landscaping practices can help reduce environmental impact, conserve resources, and create healthier outdoor spaces.
Native Plants
Use native plants that are well-adapted to your local climate and soil conditions. Native plants require less water, fertilizer, and maintenance, and they provide habitat for local wildlife.
Rain Gardens
Design rain gardens to manage stormwater runoff and reduce erosion. Rain gardens are planted with water-tolerant plants that help absorb and filter rainwater. They can be both functional and beautiful, enhancing the overall landscape.
Composting
Set up a composting system to recycle yard waste and kitchen scraps. Composting enriches the soil, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, and helps keep organic waste out of landfills.
For more on eco-friendly practices and enhancing the sustainability of your home, see my article on Eco-Friendly Abodes: Enhancing Energy Efficiency in Bungalows.
Creating Privacy and Shade
Privacy and shade are important considerations for outdoor spaces. Thoughtful landscaping can create secluded and comfortable areas for relaxation and entertainment.
Hedges and Fences
Use hedges, fences, or trellises to create privacy screens around your yard. Evergreen hedges provide year-round coverage, while flowering shrubs can add seasonal interest. Choose fence materials that match the style of your bungalow.
Shade Trees
Plant shade trees to provide relief from the sun and create a cooler microclimate in your yard. Trees also add vertical interest and can serve as focal points in the landscape. Consider native or well-adapted species that will thrive in your area.
Pergolas and Arbors
Install pergolas or arbors to define outdoor spaces and provide partial shade. These structures can be covered with climbing plants like vines, roses, or wisteria to create a lush, green canopy.
Enhancing Aesthetic Appeal
The aesthetic appeal of your garden plays a significant role in the overall enjoyment of your outdoor space. Here are some ideas to enhance the visual appeal of your bungalow garden:
Color Schemes
Plan your garden with a cohesive color scheme. Choose a palette of complementary colors that match or contrast with your bungalowâs exterior. Consider seasonal variations to ensure the garden looks attractive throughout the year.
Garden Art and Decor
Add garden art and decor, such as sculptures, bird baths, or decorative pots, to personalize your space. These elements can serve as focal points and add character to the garden.
Lighting
Install outdoor lighting to highlight key features and extend the usability of your garden into the evening. Use a mix of path lights, spotlights, and string lights to create ambiance and enhance safety.
Conclusion
Landscaping your bungalow garden is a wonderful way to enhance the beauty, functionality, and value of your home. By creating inviting front yards, functional backyards, and incorporating sustainable practices, you can design an outdoor space that complements your bungalow's style and meets your needs. Whether you're looking to entertain, relax, or grow your own produce, thoughtful landscaping can transform your yard into a personal oasis.

Why Choose Cedar Hedges and Tips to Keep Them Pruned Beautifully?
Cedar hedges are more than just a barrier or a privacy screen for your propertyâthey're living, breathing statements of natural beauty. When properly maintained, these lush evergreens can transform any landscape into a stunning, picturesque setting. Whether you're considering cedar hedge trimming services or looking to take on the task yourself, understanding the benefits and mastering the art of pruning can make a world of difference in keeping them beautifully maintained. Cedar hedge trimmer.
The Beauty of Cedar Hedges
Cedar hedges, predominantly made of Western Red Cedar, offer more than just aesthetic appeal. Their dense foliage, vibrant green color, and adaptability to various climates make them a popular choice for homeowners seeking both privacy and natural beauty. Their robustness also allows for flexible shaping, enabling you to create intricate designs or maintain a classic, neatly trimmed appearance.
Cedar Hedge Trimming: Why It Matters
Regular trimming isnât merely for aesthetic purposes; it's crucial for the health and vitality of your cedar hedges. Trimming promotes growth, prevents diseases, and maintains the desired shape and density. Hiring cedar hedge trimming services ensures a professional touch, ensuring proper care without compromising the hedge's health.
Tips for Pruning Cedar Hedges Beautifully
1. Choose the Right Time
Spring and early summer are ideal for pruning cedar hedges. This timing allows new growth to emerge, providing ample time for the hedge to recover before the arrival of harsh winter conditions.
2. Use the Right Tools
Sharp, clean tools are essential for an effective trim. Invest in quality cedar hedge trimmer or shears specifically designed for shrubs to ensure a clean cut without causing damage.
3. Trim Thoughtfully
Start by removing dead or damaged branches. Shape the hedge gradually, cutting back small amounts at a time to achieve the desired shape while maintaining its natural density.
4. Consider Tapering
To ensure sunlight reaches the lower parts of the hedge, consider tapering the sides slightly inward toward the base. This technique promotes healthy growth throughout the entire hedge.
5. Regular Maintenance
Frequent, light trimming sessions throughout the growing season are more effective than infrequent, heavy pruning. This practice helps maintain the shape and minimizes stress on the hedge.
Cedar Hedge Trimming Services: Hiring Professionals
While DIY pruning can be rewarding, hiring cedar hedge trimming services offers numerous benefits. Professional arborists possess the expertise, tools, and experience to ensure precise and healthy pruning while saving you time and effort.
Cedar hedges are natural wonders that enhance the beauty of any landscape. With proper care and maintenance, they can thrive for years, providing privacy, beauty, and environmental benefits. Whether you're tackling the task yourself or seeking professional assistance, understanding the importance of cedar hedge trimming and implementing the right techniques will keep your hedges lush, vibrant, and a standout feature of your property's exterior.

Longyards grand opening
While it is a long march from humble beginnings to a continent-spanning business operation, if anyone can do it, itâs my friend and coaching client, Chris Long, pictured here with his oldest daughter, Lily, at the grand opening of Longyards at 6571 Bank street in Ottawa Canada on October 1st, 2019.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4d74344f53213cc7b49a7ac8f6b538cd/7aeb5bf2f27a7c0c-bc/s540x810/f213e53dad584b8c4488a53482d9763ee573b6df.jpg)
Chris is a trained carpenter who took over his grandfatherâs business (Conrad Construction) a few years ago and used it as a cash engine to build a high-yielding real estate investment portfolio that includes both a residential rental component and now a commercial one too.
Longyards is the first of what we hope will be many storage yards focused on RV, truck, bus, boat and equipment parking as well as mini contractor yards, a place where a contractor or trades-person can have their own storage yard to develop their own businesses.

Itâs modeled after Khyl Powellâs facility in Ithica, Arizona called CS Yards, Â http://csyards.com/.
Chris is a fine student; he understands property animation (adding new revenue streams) well. He took the decrepit old house that existed on the land when he bough it (9-acres +/- of heavy industrial-zoned land) and turned it into two unitsâupper and lower 2-bedroom apartments (each with their own ingress/egress) plus he converted the existing garage into a microsuite also with its own entry and w/c (bathroom) and micro-kitchen that he can use as a site office.

Feds have not 'demonstrated need' for security-screening measures: privacy watchdog
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cb10cd3c200c2dd305c2ae6ed5154781/f931558bfd0e70a9-eb/s540x810/2cf02c1010e62921042a412f08186e4448b939a8.jpg)
OTTAWA â The federal privacy watchdog is pressing for changes to security screening procedures for public servants.
An internal memo prepared by the privacy commissionerâs office says the government has ânot demonstrated the needâ for several intrusive measures â from credit checks to polygraph tests.
The memo says the watchdog will continue to press the Treasury Board Secretariat to justify provisions of its security-screening standard, but also that the Treasury Board has largely proceeded without taking the privacy commissionerâs advicemover the years.
The Canadian Press used the Access to Information Act to recently obtain a copy of the November 2019 memo.
The Standard on Security Screening, introduced in October 2014, allows for screening of federal personnel ranging from the basic category of âreliability statusâ to âenhanced top secretâ clearance.
Federal officials are reviewing the standard, as they are required to do every five years â an examination the Treasury Board says will include privacy considerations.
The internal memo says the privacy commissionerâs office planned in late 2019 to emphasize its view the Treasury Board Secretariat had not made a compelling case for the screening procedures.
âWe have stressed that TBS has provided insufficient analysis to demonstrate that each measure mandated by the standard is necessary, effective, and the least privacy-intrusive measure available,â the memo says.
âWhere TBS has provided evidence towards the effectiveness of these measures, the evidence has been general in nature, and the link to effectiveness has not always been strong.
For example, with respect to checks of credit records, Treasury Board pointed to a single British study that found many data breaches are motivated by desire for money, the privacy watchdogâs memo says.
âWe do not feel that this provides an actual link between poor credit and financial gain.â
Among the officeâs other concerns:
â Use of police record checks, to see if someone might be associated with criminal activity, can turn up non-conviction-related information about things like mental-health incidents and domestic disputes;
â Examination of open-source information, for instance through internet searches, can still yield personal data, some of which might be inaccurate;
â Polygraph testing, which is expanded under the standard, does not directly measure trustworthiness and is known to produce both false negatives and false positives.
Mandatory security-screening requirements set out in the federal standard are applied by departments and agencies commensurate with the risk related to the duties the subject is to perform and the sensitivity of information, assets or facilities he or she will have access to, said Martin Potvin, a Treasury Board spokesman.
The government âtakes the privacy rights of Canadians seriouslyâ and continuously adopts measures to safeguard personal information held by government institutions, including in its security screening practices, he added.
The privacy commissionerâs office says Treasury Board has emphasized the need to align Canadaâs screening practices with those of the other Five Eyes nations â members of an intelligence-sharing alliance that includes Australia, Britain, New Zealand and the United States.
In 2016, the watchdog acknowledged the importance of being considered âa viable, security-focused partner,â but added the federal standard raised Canada to âa level that exceededâ the other Five Eyes nations, with the exception of the U.S., says a background document included with the memo.
Vito Pilieci, a spokesman for the privacy commissioner, said the office corresponded with Treasury Board on the screening standard in February, and continues to engage with the department on the matter.
While the officeâs concerns could be addressed as part of the Treasury Board review, confidentiality requirements mean the ongoing process cannot be discussed in further detail, he added.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 22, 2020.

Cedar Hedge Trimming Services: What You Need to Know
When it comes to maintaining the beauty and privacy of your property, cedar hedges are a popular choice among homeowners. These lush, evergreen shrubs provide a natural boundary and enhance your landscape's overall aesthetic. However, cedar hedges require proper care and attention to thrive like any living thing. That's where cedar hedge trimming services come into play. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into everything you need to know about cedar hedge trimming, from the importance of regular maintenance to hiring the right professionals for the job. Ottawa hedge trimming
Why Cedar Hedges?
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of cedar hedge trimming, let's take a moment to understand why cedar hedges are such a sought-after addition to many properties. Cedar hedges, often made from Thuja occidentalis or Western Red Cedar, offer several advantages:
Privacy: Cedar hedges act as a natural privacy screen, shielding your property from prying eyes and noise pollution.
Aesthetics: Their vibrant green foliage provides a picturesque backdrop to your landscape, enhancing its overall beauty.
Versatility: Cedar hedges can be pruned and shaped to suit your desired aesthetic, from formal and structured to wild and natural.
Low Maintenance: While they do require regular care, cedar hedges are generally low-maintenance compared to other landscaping options.
Now that we've established why cedar hedges are so popular, let's delve into the heart of the matter: cedar hedge trimming.
Cedar Hedge Trimming: The Basics
The Importance of Regular Trimming
Cedar hedge trimming is more than just a cosmetic procedure; it's essential for the health and longevity of your hedges. Regular trimming offers the following benefits:
Promotes Growth: Pruning encourages new growth, making your hedges denser and more vibrant.
Prevents Disease: Trimming helps remove dead or diseased branches, preventing the spread of illness to healthy parts of the hedge.
Maintains Shape: Proper trimming ensures that your hedges maintain their desired shape and size.
Improves Air Circulation: Adequate spacing between branches allows for better air circulation, reducing the risk of mold and fungal issues.
When to Trim Cedar Hedges
Timing is crucial when it comes to cedar hedge trimming. While you can trim cedar hedges throughout the year, certain seasons are more ideal:
Spring: Spring is an excellent time for light trimming to remove winter damage and promote new growth.
Late Spring to Early Summer: This is the optimal time for a more substantial trim, as it allows the hedge to recover and flourish during the growing season.
Fall: Trimming in early fall can help shape your hedges before winter sets in. However, avoid heavy pruning during this time, as it may stimulate new growth that won't have time to harden before winter.
DIY vs. Professional Cedar Hedge Trimming
Now that you understand the importance of cedar hedge trimming, the next question is whether to tackle the task yourself or hire professionals. Let's explore both options.
DIY Cedar Hedge Trimming
Pros:
Cost-effective
Allows for hands-on involvement in your landscape
Suitable for small hedges or minimal pruning needs
Cons:
Requires time and effort
Can be physically demanding
Risk of improper trimming, which can harm your hedges
If you decide to hedge trimming near me yourself, make sure to use the right tools, such as sharp hedge shears and safety equipment like gloves and eye protection. Also, take your time and follow proper pruning techniques to avoid damaging the plants.
Professional Cedar Hedge Trimming
Pros:
Expertise and experience
Saves you time and physical effort
Ensures proper trimming for healthier hedges
Suitable for large or overgrown hedges
Cons:
Costlier than DIY, but often worth the investment
Hiring professional cedar hedge trimming services, like those offered by Only Hedges, can provide peace of mind. These experts have the knowledge, tools, and experience to trim your hedges effectively and efficiently, ensuring they thrive and remain a beautiful addition to your property.
Choosing the Right Cedar Hedge Trimming Service
If you decide to go the professional route, it's essential to choose the right cedar hedge trimming service for your needs. Here are some factors to consider:
Experience: Look for a company with a track record of successfully trimming cedar hedges. Check for customer reviews and testimonials.
Credentials: Ensure that the professionals are licensed and insured. This protects you in case of any accidents or damage to your property during the trimming process.
Customization: Discuss your specific needs and expectations with the trimming service. They should be willing to tailor their services to your preferences.
Cost: Get multiple quotes from different companies to compare prices. Remember that the cheapest option may not always be the best quality.
Timing: Ask about their availability and scheduling to ensure they can trim your hedges at the most appropriate time.
Maintaining Your Cedar Hedges After Trimming
Once your cedar hedges have been professionally trimmed or you've tackled the task yourself, it's essential to continue caring for them to maintain their health and appearance. Here are some post-trimming maintenance tips:
Regular Watering: Ensure your hedges receive adequate water, especially during dry spells. Proper hydration promotes healthy growth.
Mulching: Applying mulch around the base of your hedges helps retain moisture and deter weeds.
Fertilization: Consider fertilizing your cedar hedges in the spring to provide essential nutrients.
Monitor for Pests: Keep an eye out for signs of pest infestations, such as discolored leaves or holes. Address these issues promptly.
Inspect for Disease: Regularly inspect your hedges for signs of disease, such as brown or black spots on the foliage. If you notice any issues, consult a professional for guidance.

Curb appeal ROI
If you read my title carefully, thereâs a contradiction in it: An ROI from your front yard? Really?
Most front yards are neglected wastes of space. Folks might think that grassy buffer zones (aka front yards) are somehow âgreen,â meaning environmentally important. Other than being the color green, grassed front yards are anything but.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7842ff24319e9316244e7fa29aab42eb/tumblr_inline_po1w7tRXLx1s12m32_540.jpg)
You need to weed them, feed them, water them, keep grubs away, cut them with CO2-producing, noisy lawnmowers not to mention pay for them in the first place.
Eva OGrady and her daughter Angela OâGrady raised another possibility: Can a front yard makeover (whatever that means) improve property value, attract better tenants paying higher rents and staying longer? Can it create a more interactive community and a better neighborhood?
This led us to create a list of curb appeal improvements that a homeowner or indeed a commercial property owner could consider implementing⌠the idea is to try to boost ROI without breaking the bank either. Heck, thatâs what Return on Investment means anyway, right?
What kind of curb appeal animations are we talking about?
Maybe:
-organized street tree planting, fruit trees and frontyard gardens, planter beds
-patios
-lighting scenes
-frontyard gardens
-horizontal transition lines
-more ingress/egress and wow (window on the world)
-street furniture
-street art/sculpture
-mural art
-hardscaping and extra parking areas
-parking mesh grass -0-step entry
-rainwater recapture rain barrels
-natural (low maintenance) âlawnâ and gardensâmarket garden farm gate âlemonadeâ stand

Youâve heard of home staging, correct?
Well how about extending it to the front yard and, while you are at it, the backyard tooâ with cool animations like storage sheds, mini offices, workshops, backyard games and a million other ideas?
Whatâll we call this new service?
How about: Home stager, front yard curb appeal specialist and backyard makeover artist?

Harsh fines and policing donât protect people from COVID-19, criminologists say

Harsh fines and policing donât protect people from COVID-19, criminologists say
Corey Yanofsky, a data scientist living in Ottawa, took his dog out for a walk last week and ended up with an $880 fine for standing in the wrong place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Obi Ifedi of Ottawa was walking through a park with his daughter April 4 when he was approached by a city bylaw officer. He says he was eventually tackled and ended the evening with a bruised lip and fines totalling more than $2,000.
Then there was Melissa Leblanc of the Montreal suburb of Beaconsfield, who was greeted by police at her door April 5 after family and friends wished her a happy birthday from their cars.

They are just a handful of the hundreds of Canadians feeling the impact of policies that governments have put in place since March aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19. But experts in criminology and law are pushing back against the conventional wisdom that giving police the power to levy heavy fines will make people safer.
Story continues below advertisement
They argue public health directives are unclear, and the way they are being enforced is counterproductive and a distraction from the failure of the state to better prepare for COVID-19. Moreover, they say, the heavy fines disproportionately affect people of limited means, people of colour and marginalized communities.

Ifedi, a stay-at-home father originally from Nigeria, said he and his daughter left an Ottawa park after being ordered to do so. But he alleges the agent followed and continued to scold them as they walked home. Ifedi said he told the officer there werenât any signs stating the park was closed.
âHe didnât like me talking back,â Ifedi said in an interview Tuesday. âThatâs when he said: âYou know what, I will write you a ticket. Give me your name.â â
Halifax-based lawyer David Fraser said police in his city have previously been called out for racial profiling. A 2019 report commissioned by the provincial human rights commission indicated black males in the Halifax area were nine times more likely to be stopped by police than the general population.
READ MORE: Coronavirus: Police to verify Canadians complying with quarantine order, RCMP says
Fraser, author of the Canadian Privacy Law Blog, said there is little reason to believe profiling has stopped during the pandemic. And he said the provinceâs public health orders are unclear, hastily drawn up and may lead to over-policing.
Story continues below advertisement
For example, he said, on Sunday, Halifax Regional Police denied rumours their officers were stopping all vehicles carrying two or more people in order to check for non-essential travel. âWhile inspecting vehicles can at times be part of our #COVID-19 enforcement efforts if necessary, NOT ALL vehicles are being stopped,â the police said on Twitter.

Fraser said that message strongly suggests police are sometimes stopping cars, even though nothing in the public health orders gives police added authority to stop vehicles or interrogate people.

Toronto to fine social distancing violators $5,000
In response to a question about how the provinceâs public health directives give officers the right to stop vehicles, Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. John MacLeod said questions about the specifics of the order are the responsibility of the province.
âAs always, in every situation, our officers are expected to conduct themselves in an unbiased and respectful manner,â he said in an email Tuesday.
Fraser also took issue with a March 30 order by Nova Scotia Justice Minister Mark Furey, which stated police âshall escalate their efforts from public education to enforcement, in accordance with officer discretion.â
If police are being told that whenever they see an infraction, issue a ticket, Fraser said, âwe know that police are present in minority communities way more than they are in affluent communities.â

READ MORE: REALITY CHECK: Police say they arenât pulling over cars for coronavirus fines
Criminology researchers Alex Luscombe and Alexander McClelland are mapping the police enforcement of the pandemic across Canada. Their project, âPolicing the Pandemic,â collects data from media articles, police press releases, and social media posts.
Between April 4-13, their research indicates there were at least 735 violations of public health and emergency law offences, most of which took place in Quebec (324), Nova Scotia (228) and Ontario (161).
Luscombe, a PhD student in the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto, said ticketing people disproportionately hurts those who donât have room to comfortably self-isolate or who havenât been properly educated about the spread of COVID-19.

He said he is not aware of any criminological research that indicates ticketing is an effective way to deter bad behaviour.
âYou only have to look at speeding as one example where ticketing is used as the main form of social control by police,â he said in a recent interview, âbut we donât necessarily see an end to speeding, do we?â
McClelland, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa, researches the criminalization of communicable diseases, particularly HIV. He says itâs still early, but he expects this crisis to produce similar policing patterns that emerged from the AIDS crisis.

âBlack and brown people, and poor and Indigenous people are over-represented in criminal cases related to HIV,â he said.
McClelland warned against a government approach on COVID-19 that singles out people for jail time or fines.
âWhat that does is individualizes our response,â he said in an interview. âIt means we think we can point out one person and say, âThey are the person to blame â put them away.â But what that does is that we donât ask broader questions about why our health-care system hasnât rolled out massive testing.â
Meanwhile, Yanofsky, 41, said he is contesting the hefty ticket he received April 5. The park had signs, he said, stating the area was closed to limit the spread of COVID-19, âexcept for walk through.â
âThe cityâs enforcement ⌠is using an extremely limited meaning of âwalk through,ââ he said.
READ MORE: Coronavirus: Flouting public health rules will now bring $486 fine for Manitobans
Ifedi, 39, said he has hired a lawyer and plans on contesting his fine. He said the bylaw officer followed him, asking for his name, and then called over two police officers who happened to be close by.
Ifedi said he refused to give his name to the bylaw agent and to the police officers. He said he remembers being tackled to the ground and punched in the face by the bylaw agent, before the two police officers intervened.

Roger Chapman, director of By-Law & Regulatory Services for the city of Ottawa, said his department âdenies any improper conduct allegations and the characterization of the incident.â
âHowever, in light of potential court process, BLRS will not provide any further comment.â

Michael Bryant, executive director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, said he is working with Ifedi and assessing whether the CCLA will intervene in the case, which he said âraises the possibility of racial profiling.â
Leblanc, whose birthday celebration took a sour turn, said police told her they had received a call from a neighbour, and they threatened her with a $1,500 fine and jail time for a subsequent offence.
In the end she got off with a warning, but she worries about the climate police are working in. âI know they were stressed,â she said in a recent interview. âBut donât take it out on me.â

By Patty Branco, National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV)
âI am trying desperately to get back home to North Dakota before my abuser is released from jail. I am stranded in Louisiana. Please help me if in any way possible.â â Marie* (survivor reaching out to NRCDV)
Like Marie, survivors often reach out to NRCDV with inquiries about relocation assistance. In my role as a technical assistance provider, I often feel heartbroken over the challenges they face, and at the same time, inspired by the resilience and resourcefulness that they carry. While our organization does not provide direct services such as emergency shelter or crisis intervention, we do refer survivors to their local domestic violence program, state/territory coalition and the community-based resources best positioned to offer the support that they need. Although leaving is not an option for or the desire of every survivor â not to mention that ending the relationship does not necessarily end the abuse â many survivors do leave their abusive partners. Some survivors see relocating to a different city, county, state or country as the only option for finding support and safety from abuse.
Relocation is certainly a broad and complex issue, with many important considerations. For example, there are legal implications that domestic violence survivors must consider when moving with children from one state or tribal jurisdiction to another. The Legal Resource Center on Violence Against Women and the Resource Center on Domestic Violence: Child Protection and Custody provide training and resources to help advocates and survivors navigate these legal issues (see Frequently Asked Questions on Relocation for Victim Advocates). While relocation may be the most viable option for a survivor to permanently cut ties with an abusive partner in some cases, it is critical that survivors receive strategic guidance to make informed choices when they need to relocate for their personal safety. Safety Net Project provides resources and consultation to better equip advocates and other professionals to address the complexity and challenges of ensuring survivorsâ privacy and safety when they relocate (see, for instance, important considerations about identity protection and change).
âI was wondering how I can apply for grants, so my children and I can relocate and get established elsewhere where we feel safe.â â Paula* (survivor reaching out to NRCDV)
Most of the time, when survivors reach out to NRCDV, they are seeking information about financial resources to make their relocation possible. They need money to fuel their car or buy a bus or plane ticket, to pay the security deposit on a new apartment, to support themselves until they find a job. The process of leaving and relocating can be particularly challenging for survivors who are socially or economically marginalized, including low-income survivors, those in isolated, rural areas, as well as immigrant survivors who may lack support networks. Available research has consistently identified poverty, economic dependence, and lack of tangible resources and social support as strong predictors of womenâs decisions to return to, or remain with, their abusers. Additionally, studies have also found that women of color are at an âincreased risk of encountering structural and social barriers that complicate help-seekingâ for domestic violence (Crisafi & Jasinski, 2015, p. 1002).
Relocation funding may vary from state to state. In some states, the crime victim compensation program may cover relocation expenses for victims who must move for their physical safety, or a relocation assistance program for domestic violence victims may be available through the Department of Children and Families. In some instances, the cost of emergency relocation to a safer housing situation may also be offset by flexible funding â an emerging approach being used in many states across the country to address survivorsâ housing needs (see How can I use funding from the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) to address the housing needs of domestic violence survivors in my community?). It is important that survivors connect with their local domestic violence program and state/territory coalition for assistance with learning about and accessing available funding.
Partnering with Moving Companies as an Advocacy Strategy
Victim-defined advocacy must address the economic safety needs of survivors, including tangible economic resources. Creative and strategic community collaborations can create opportunities for supplementing traditional relocation funding and/or providing assistance when survivors do not qualify for these funding options. As one such strategy, this TAQ highlights examples of partnerships to provide free moving services to survivors.
âJust moved here. I have no family to assist me. Iâm trying to get the money for a deposit and to hire someone to load and unload a truck for me to move out of this very dangerous situation.â â Kathy* (survivor reaching out to NRCDV)
We know that survivors leaving dangerous situations need a variety of things such as safety planning assistance, legal advocacy, affordable housing, adequate child care, job training and stable employment. As Kathy (quoted above) reminds us, they also need very tangible things like help packing their belongings and loading and unloading a truck. I first learned about free services designed to assist victims of domestic violence with their moving needs back in 2016, when I provided domestic violence training materials to Shelter Movers. A volunteer-based organization, Shelter Movers offers no-cost moving and storage services to domestic violence survivors and their children. The organization collaborates with community partners in Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto to help families move out of abusive homes. According to their website, this âservice model is highly replicable and requires very little overhead to operate, making its establishment in other communities across Canada very viable.â
vimeo
SMT - a client's story from Mike Meehan on Vimeo.
In the United States, through partnerships with several domestic violence programs in California, Meathead Movers has been providing, for over 15 years, âpremium moving services while extending a philanthropic arm to victims of domestic violence by giving them a fresh start with free moving servicesâ (see California Moving Company Helps Victims of Domestic Violence Flee Their Abusers for Free). Similarly, the nation-wide moving company TWO MEN AND A TRUCKÂŽ has also established partnerships with local domestic violence programs such as Friendship Home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Whether it is moving survivorsâ belongings from their previous home into storage while they are in shelter or moving them into a new home away from their abusive partners, TWO MEN AND A TRUCKÂŽ offers what Friendship Home staff describe as a âunique and invaluable confidential serviceâ to survivors in their program. Julie Havener, Counselor and Strengths-Centered Advocacy Coordinator with Friendship Home explains:
âWhen survivors take the courageous step to reach out for help in finding safe shelter, there are already so many things they have to leave behind â the place they called home, their neighborhood, everything that was familiar to them. When it is safe to do so, our partnership with TWO MEN AND A TRUCKÂŽ allows survivors to keep their belongings rather than have to lose those too.â
Partnerships between moving companies and domestic violence programs are filled with potential. For many survivors, having access to free packing, moving and storage services may be their only viable option for safely relocating without losing their treasured belongings. For advocates, these partnerships represent an opportunity for expanding strategic collaborations with non-traditional partners to fill service gaps when resources are scarce. For moving companies and community members, such collaboration provides individuals and local businesses with a unique avenue for assisting survivors of domestic violence and getting actively involved in creating safer communities.
Considerations for Successful Partnerships
Connecting survivors with free moving/relocation services may prove to be an invaluable component within a broader array of trauma-informed services that are offered to those fleeing abusive homes. However, it is critical that these services be provided in partnership with and under the guidance of domestic violence programs. Moving companies and volunteer movers need adequate training to ensure that the experience is as safe as possible for both survivors and volunteers, and that survivors are connected with the support they need beyond moving day. Within a trauma-informed approach, safety relates to survivorsâ physical as well as emotional well-being, and services should be offered in an inclusive, welcoming, destigmatizing, and non-retraumatizing environment (NCDVTMH, 2011).
When moving services are offered in partnership with domestic violence programs, victim advocates can play a key role in ensuring that services are delivered in a trauma-informed and empowering way. In addition to providing comprehensive training to volunteers, local domestic violence programs are also best positioned to screen requests for help, protect victimsâ private information throughout the process and provide safety planning assistance before, during and after the move. âWhile leaving and relocating can be significant steps for women in changing the power dynamics of an abusive relationship, women are still in need of protection from their abusers and assistance from various informal and formal support systems following separationâ (Crisafi & Jasinski, 2015, p. 989).
âI have been trying to find an agency that can help us to escape the area where we are not safe. I would like any information you can help me with regarding flight assistance.â âRenee* (survivor reaching out to NRCDV)
These considerations can also be applied to other creative collaborations that advocates may explore in order to address the breadth of survivorsâ relocation needs, including but not limited to partnerships with hotels, rental car companies, rideshare services (see example of partnership with Lyft), as well as aviation charities that provide free air transportation to individuals and families in crisis (see, for example, Angel Flight West and Air Charity Network). Fortunately, resources are available to enhance advocatesâ skills and mindset for successful collaborations and for engaging new or nontraditional partners. In developing and sustaining relationships with moving companies and other new partners, advocates must find and build common ground and a shared sense of purpose. And, often, this involves building bridges and making connections where none existed before.Â

Tips to Enhance Your Yard with cedar hedge trimming
Whether you are looking to add privacy, or just want to bring a sense of beauty and elegance to your yard, planting a cedar hedge is an excellent idea. Cedar hedges are also one of the best ways to protect your property from intruders while adding style and personality. You can use them as barriers around the perimeter of your home or around fruit trees or gardens; they provide great windbreaks and do not need much maintenance once established. However, there are several things you should know before starting this project so that it will be successful for years to come! hedge trimming near me
Planting a cedar hedge will help you to enhance your yard.
Cedar hedges are attractive, easy to maintain, durable, and long-lasting. They add value to your home by improving the curb appeal of your property. You can use them as screens for privacy or as windbreaks for protection against strong winds.
Cedar trees require plenty of sunlight so it's best if you plant them in an area that gets at least 6 hours of sunshine per day during summertime. Moreover, they need well-drained soil which means that it should not be soggy nor contain too much clay content in order for them not only survive but thrive as well!
Select the best location for your cedar hedge.
Choose a spot that gets full sun, but is sheltered from drying winds and salt spray.
A location that is protected from winds will also help protect your hedge from being damaged by wind-driven rain or snow--a common problem with many deciduous trees and shrubs, which can be very damaging to evergreen plants like cedar hedges if left unprotected during harsh weather conditions like these!
It is important to trim your cedar hedge on a regular basis.
This will help keep them healthy and looking good. You can do this by hand or with a hedge trimmer, but make sure that when you trim, you remove dead or diseased branches as well. Trimming should be done at the same time each year in order to maintain an even shape through the seasons.
You may need to hire a professional to trim or prune your hedges.
If you're not sure what to do, it's best to hire a professional. You can use a hedge trimmer or pruning saw to trim the hedges yourself (you'll need a ladder to reach higher hedges). If you do decide to trim on your own, don't cut off more than 1/3 of the hedge at any time--this will help keep its shape and keep it from getting too thin.
If you care for your cedars properly, they will look great.
If you care for your cedars properly, they will look great and be healthy for years to come! You won't have to worry about them dying or needing replacement. In fact, if you keep up with trimming the hedges, they'll stay in good shape without needing any additional work on your part.
