Princess Nine (1998) — All eye catches

One of my favorite things about this random 90s baseball anime called Princess Nine is how aliens are casually canon for no reason. Let me explain.

This one girl on the team, left fielder Yuki Azuma, carries around this little keychain doll that she calls Fifi and she says it is an alien. It looks like a cheap little souvenir and is fully inanimate.

Episode 22 starts out with a flashback to before she joined the baseball team, when she was the star of her softball team. Her teammates are somehow upset that they keep winning games after they win one thanks to Yuki hitting a home run, and they cut up her jersey because she's too good and steals the spotlight. Which sounds easy to do because they also super suck at cutting up a jersey.

Her parents also show her no love or respect when she spirals as a result of her entire team treating her like garbage. They say she's embarrassing them in front of their friends, so she gets even more depressed.

One night, she's outside with her thoughts when a bright light shines down from the sky and Fifi shows up. And is a real alien who talks and moves.

Up until this point, we are led to believe that Yuki is just the quiet, kinda weird girl on the team. She says her good luck charm is an alien, but she's always at practice and is one of the better players so they just let her do her thing. But now we see Fifi moving around and talking? Could it just be us seeing how Yuki's imagination works? Who knows.

Well, she loses Fifi at one point and drops into a deep depression. Inconsolable. Falls over out in left field. The team rallies behind her and tries to tell her she doesn't need Fifi any longer. And then, from the sky, another bright light.

Fifi goes back to their home planet. And the whole team sees it, so it's not just Yuki's imagination. My favorite reaction is from their coach, who has been pounding beers in his uniform, and has clearly had enough of this nonsense. This image screams "Are you fucking kidding me" louder than anything I've ever seen.

And that's it. This is not a sci-fi anime and there's no point to any of the alien plot, really. They could have had the team rally around Yuki without adding actual aliens but, instead, we just casually have canonical aliens in this anime about girls trying to play baseball.

“High school baseball is a national sport with a long tradition. Frankly, it is utterly ridiculous to allow girls to participate. It would be nothing more than cheap entertainment. If you are so determined to promote women’s status, why don’t you do it somewhere else?”

When Kisaragi Girls’ High School Chairman Himuro Keiko announces that her prestigious school will start an all-girls’ baseball team, her colleagues (all men) greet her with shock. When she promises that the girls’ team will make it to Koshien—the boys’ national high school baseball championships—within three years, they greet her with ridicule. They fight her and the team every step of the way, insisting girls don’t have a place in boys’ sports. 

It’s unladylike. They’re too weak to compete. They’ll just embarrass the school and themselves. Why can’t that female chairman just give up and start a softball team or something?

Himuro doesn’t flinch. She does it anyway. And the girls step up to every challenge their opponents throw at them, and they knock them all out of the park.

At least, until they don’t.
