good enough TOP THREE FAVORITE BUTTERFLIES, RANKED FROM MOST BASIC BITCH OPTION TO MOST NICHE:

1. my basic bitch take of the hour: the large blue butterfly. love it.

well known for being a brood parasite. which automatically wins my favor. on account of i looove being a parasite myself. by which i mean needing extra support from the people around me, specifically within the context of autism. if i can't change that, might as well embrace it, right? i'm saying parasitic dynamics hold a special place in my heart.

honorable mention to the large white butterfly (no relation) for being a victim of wasp parasitism. and also really pretty. dainty, like me. the large blue's also really pretty. dainty, like me.

i get why people love bright colors on butterflies, but personally i'm a big fan of these sorts of washed out color palettes on them. makes me feel closer to them? in a way? makes them feel not quite as mythical. even with this species in particular being very hyped up. mostly by the british.

i’m really happy to know that, so far, there’s been pretty successful conservation efforts. by the british. i like knowing they’re around even if i’ll never see them irl.

2. mountain apollo butterfly. they’re cool. very very cool. to me.

i have to admit, a big part of why i like these is they remind me of a character. who i shall not specify :)

beyond that though! they're just... they're stunning. they shock me dead every time i see them. they're just so cool looking... i need these fuckers in more vent art, stat. they're perfect for the job, c'mon.

also! reading about these is how i learned the term sphragis. which immediately entered my list of funny words. it's just a silly collection of letters, isn't it. it's pronounced sfra-jis. which i clarify because the first time i read it, i went. "spra-gis? they make a spra-gis?" and then i didn't check the pronunciation. for a good while. i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

also the subject of conservation efforts! in poland, czechia, and austria. the project (LIFE apollo2020) is relatively new but seems promising.

it's another european butterfly that i'm never seeing irl, but like with the large blue, knowing it's out there brings me joy.

3. the puerto rican yellow. because i'm biased <3

this! this butterfly! this one comes with no fun facts, there's basically no info online other than pretty generic entries in a bunch of butterfly cataloguing sites and a wikipedia page. but! this is the one butterfly i see on a regular basis. on walks, on drives, just living life.

it's far from the only butterfly i've seen irl. a monarch with a broken wing landed in my backyard quite recently. a year back i saw a gulf fritillary at the school garden. and surely, there's many more that i spotted way before my butterfly and moth special interest, that i just... didn't think to remember at the time. not to mention, we have butterfly houses over here, and i know i visited one once, when i was really young. i could visit one tomorrow, if i really wanted to! but.

there's something about being at school. and seeing a speck of bright yellow flying about. and they're small and they're fast so sometimes you think it's just a leaf in the wind, but no, leaves don't move like that, it couldn't be. and there's just a real sense of wonder to the moment.

also, looking into butterflies has taught me: scientists are far from omniscient, genera get split literally all the time. this sweetie is a victim of that. eurema -> pyrisitia. i just think that's neat. far, far from unique to it, but neat.
