Estimeric Week 2024 - Day 3 Fairytale/Folklore
The Lindworm said again to him, “Fair knight, shed a shift.” The temple knight answered him, “Prince Lindworm, slough a skin.”
Apropos of nothing, I remembered the fairytale, "Prince Lindworm," and promptly went feral 👀💦

Happy Valentine's Day, folks! Remember, if you find yourself being made to marry a giant dragon terrorising the kingdom, you do not have to go quietly (bring your sheep-shears).

I would eat up as much as you’re willing to share about the Rose Twins, honestly. I’ve been a bit obsessed with the Lindworm story since seeing the OSP video on it, and another comic by someone (and I also love that Edel is a girl like the white rose was meant to give the Queen).
Thank you so much! the story is still in the early development stage but i'd be more than happy to share more(And i know what you mean, the OSP video is what inspired me to create the rose twins)
before i go on another tangent. The Rose twins now have Profiles on toyhouse! which goes into detail about their personalities and backstories.
With that out of the way. Lets get into the (disjointed) lore.
in the setting of rose twins every landmass(Island, Continent, islet, etc) has a soul, known as an earth spirit, with the earth spirit of the Island Decerith sits on being called Eversyl. In some cases nations will be named after the Earth spirit of the landmass on which they stand, though not always especially in the cases of nations that span across multiple islands and thus multiple earth spirits. Though normally incorporeal, it is has been said that earth spirits will take form in times of great crisis.
Legend tells of the lost Continent and the mageocracy of Ivapherus that once stood there alongside many other countries. They speak of how the high mage council sought to harness the power of their earth spirit for their own by trapping it, but instead ended up destroying it causing the entire continent to sink into the sea.
Magic in this setting in a volatile force, though anyone has the potential to wield it it is extremely rare to find someone who will take the risk to do so and even rarer to find someone who succeeds. Magic is extremely difficult to control and requires near perfect execution and concentration and failing in either can result in dire consequences, inflicting curses on the caster and often the surrounding area, a wound that never heals. The curse that affects both of the rose twins and their mother was a result of the queen botching up a magic ritual by eating both roses instead of just one,and comparatively to how other curses in the past have gone, they were relatively lucky. People Like Zeris Firamain are known as Mage scholars, they study the history and mechanisms of magic but do not dare attempt actually casting a spell(Considering that wielding magic is the equivalent of wielding a nuclear bomb)
Lindworms are rare creatures, though documentation of their existence is substantial enough that only a few still think of them as being mythical, much about them remains a mystery even to the most learned of scholars.(To the point Edelweiss has never even seen another Lindworm)
The Hardships and Tragedies brought on by the perpetual winter have led to desperate measures being taken by Decerith's citizens in order to survive. This includes some resorting to banditry just to be able to put food on the table and even some who poach rare creatures (Like Lindworms) to sell their sought after parts.
The losses caused by the perpetual winter and the kingdom being ill-prepared to deal with it's sudden appearance have also bred some resentment for the royal family, leading to the formation of groups acting out on this blame, the most notorious and prolific of these being Wulfrost.Wulfrost seeks to assassinate the crown prince in order to deprive the queen and king of their only child, just as so many of them have lost loved ones to the winter(And they very nearly succeeded when Rowan was younger)
That's all i'll be able to share for now without diving into spoiler territory. But hopefully sometime in the future i'll be able to share some writing snippets. Thank you again for the ask anon!

I took a Domestika course on fairy tale illustration with ink and chose to illustrate the Scandinavian fairy tale Prince Lindworm. I really like this composition. (Our scanner is a bit weird. I might polish the picture digitally later.)

Posting art of my Oc, Lindworm/Asta who is inspired by the Danish tale Prince Lindworm which the tale is recorded by Svend Grundrvig
Notes:
- gen 2 of glass-rose
- one of the party members of Sena’s team
- one of the seven beast who have a connection/contract with a witch (specifically in this case Sena’s great grandmother for them)
- Uses any pronouns due to not caring how anyone treated her throughout her life as she lived as a Lindworm/abnormal by the kingdom
- was forced to be raised as a woman throughout the majority of their life by their parents until they ate the first groom they were supposed to marry out as an act of rebellion, and thus for the first time transformed into their full Lindworm form
- Has a younger twin named Rød who was forced to be raised as a boy/idealized prince and both twins raised as strangers towards one another, Rød is the only one of the kingdom who feels guilt towards their older twin, while Asta feels pity for him
- both twins have a hybrid rose growing out of their respective eyes: Asta has a white rose with red hues in his right eye, Rød has a red rose with white hues in his left eye
- They are very touch starved as the reason why they have a really big affection towards Sena (in the pictures with them) as she was the first person to ever embraced them, not as a human nor a Lindworm, but between the state of peeled layers like a rose as it exposed Asta’s flesh and blood
- often when ever she does do good deed, she ask Sena as a reward to touch their face/hold her hand, but the ultimate award which she believes to be the highest affection is an embrace

Talking about my EAH OCs because I’m being dragged back into this obsession.
Ami Fear (The Boy Who Found Fear At Last):
She is as fearless as they come, obviously. But due to her fairytale, she has a huge phobia of birds, always scared one will land on her head. She’s part of the rebels, since she doesn’t want to follow her fairytale destiny, staying fearless forever and not wanting to become royalty. Her and Jillian are pretty good friends. Maybe lesbians, maybe just gal pals. Who knows?
Ina Layer (Prince Lindworm):
She has hundreds of dresses in her closet, all of them super thick and bulky. She takes shit from no one and is very cunning. She’s actually fine with her fairytale destiny, since she and Belindo are actually in love with one another, but she supports the rebel cause. She’s a well known dragon tamer, but she doesn’t participate in the Dragon Games.
Belindo Scale (Prince Lindworm):
Some serious anger issues, but he’s working on that. He’s very protective of Ina. When he gets very angry, he turns into a Lindworm, the only thing that can turn him back being Ina. Finds being around the dragons to be awkward, since they’re all locked up and he’s not, even though he’s basically a dragon. He has a habit of eating the rose bushes, which infuriates the groundskeeper. Supports the rebel cause.
Penelope Pan (Peter Pan):
Dashing and a very handsome girl. Seeks adventure and loves sword fights. Doesn’t pay attention to any classes, yet somehow a straight A student. She definitely supports the rebel cause, since she’s all about trying new things, and unlike her dad, is ok with the idea of growing up.
Dally Bell (Peter Pan):
He hangs around Penelope 24/7 and he gossips about everyone. He can change sizes from tiny to normal sized. He has a sour and aloof attitude and has mixed feelings on the rebel cause, since he’s very hesitant to change. He’s always in his room, making something new, but he’s very insecure about his projects and only ever shows them to Penelope.

Rose Twins fairy tale? It’s based off the Lindworm myth right? How different is it from the source??
Yes! My rose twins story is loosely based on the Prince Lindworm story. This is going to be a long post so strap yourselves in When I originally came across the Fairytale I found myself interested in the story of the twins born of magic with one cursed to be a Lindworm, and I was disappointed by the fact the second human twin pretty much disappears from the story after the bride plotline begins(Which i found to be less interesting in comparison) So the Rose twins story basically takes the origin story from the fairytale(the Queen of a kingdom meeting a mysterious old woman who tells her to eat one of two roses in order to have a child, but the queen ends up eating both causing the first born child to be born a lindworm) and then makes up a different story with it
As the Name implies the Rose twins story focuses on the bond that forms between the titular characters as they meet for the first time at age 15, having been unaware of the others existence. I also wanted to incorporate the theme I chose to take away from the original Lindworm fairytale, seeing someones layers peeled back, someone at their lowest or most vulnerable, and showing them kindness and understanding.
The older Lindworm twin, Edelweiss, has spent most of her life alone after her original guardian; A mage scholar named Zeris Firamain, mysteriously vanished before she reached double digits.Overtime and fruitless search after fruitless search for somewhere to belong, only to be rejected time and time again, Edel resigned herself to becoming somewhat of a local menace of a town named Vericksvale and scaring off anyone that tries to pass through her cave.Playing tricks on others being the closest she feels she can get to other people with the cards she's been dealt. As a young Lindworm, Edel can summon translucent spectral wings and Shrink in size, becoming as small as a ball python.(She also cries Rose water)
The Younger Human twin, Rowan, has been raised as the crown prince of the kingdom of Decerith and has spent most of his life lonely among other people. When he was younger he survived an assassination attempt that left many others dead, leaving him with Severe survivor's guilt. The Pedestal he has been placed on leaves him feeling that who he really is can never measure up to those expectations and that if people actually got to know him, they would only be disappointed, So he has never let anyone get close enough. Despite what everyone else believes, he might not have been as untouched by the rose curse as it seems, something he has gone to great lengths to hide for as long as he can remember.
Thank you so much for this ask anon! I had a great time answering it
I also may or may not have gone on a brief worldbuilding tangent about Decerith underneath the cut
The story takes place in the island kingdom of Decerith, which for the last twenty years has been stuck in a perpetual winter with no known cause, leaving the kingdom in a dire state(with countless people dying on a large scale in the early days of widespread famine and cold when the kingdom was caught off guard by a winter that didnt end, and more dying in the years that followed) and completely reliant on outside trade to survive. Kept barely afloat by their own export of Elyrium, a rare and valuable metal found only in Decirith used in the construction of many a technological marvel
including the Royal TransHerdaeick Railway, a Freight line that runs across the Herdaeick sea and has served as the only way in and out of Decerith for the last 20 years due to the conditions becoming too dangerous for tradition sea transportation.Only its Small crew are able to leave and Enter Decerith(and the desperate people who give up their lifesavings and risk their lives for a one way ticket out, forced to face the hostile elements in train cars not built for passengers, just for the chance of a better future. Members of the train crew who are found involved in bringing people out of Decerith risk severe consequences)
Due it's importance to Decerith's future and how coveted a position in the crew is, the selection process is known to be very cutthroat, and its candidates are trained in combat due to risk the cargo faces from desperate thieves. The TransHerdaeick Line had been intended to be the First of Many Oceanic Railways when it finished completion, with Passenger cars being in the works when the Perpetual winter dashed all these plans and Left the Freight line as the only one of its kind.
I'll leave it there for now. if any of you are interested in hearing about more aspects of the setting(Lindworms, Magic, Earth spirits and the group known as Wulfrost) Be sure to let me know!
