Writing Notes: Philosophy
Philosophy - aims to ascertain basic existentialist truths of the world around us.
The term comes from “philosophia,” a word that has Greek and Latin origins.
Philosophers examine the nature of reality by posing philosophical questions or problems that they then attempt to solve through critical thinking.
Branches of Philosophy
Much of the value of philosophy lies in the specialization and categorization of philosophical questions that cannot be easily answered with empirical data or scientific knowledge.
Scholars organize such questions into different branches of thought, although there are perhaps as many ways of categorizing the different branches as there are scholars.
Here are just 3 of the potentially dozens of branches of philosophy:
Epistemology: Also called the theory of knowledge, this analytic philosophy studies the scope, validity, and extent of human knowledge—in other words, concepts surrounding how we can confirm what we think we know is true. Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason is an example of epistemology. In this work, Kant disagrees with philosopher David Hume, that our experiences and perceptions of things are subjective—therefore, our knowledge of things is not universal. Epistemology overlaps with many other branches of philosophy since human knowledge is relevant in other areas, such as the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind.
Ethics: The moral philosophy of ethics is one of the oldest and broadest branches of philosophy. Ethics works to debate values of good and evil and questions where human actions fall on that spectrum. The ancient Greeks struggled with these questions as they developed their societies along two schools of thought—Stoicism and Epicureanism. Although these two schools, established in 300 BC, shared several tenets, they differed in describing the best way to live. Stoics believed that living a just and virtuous life was paramount, while Epicureans believed the search for pleasure should be the highest priority. Due to its broad nature, ethics is pervasive in nearly every academic discipline and overlaps within several other areas of thought, including the philosophy of history, the philosophy of law, and the philosophy of religion.
Metaphysics: The principles of metaphysics question our place in the world and the meaning of life and human existence. Metaphysics, like ethics, began as one of the main branches of philosophy in ancient Greece. One of the premier philosophical works that established the branch was Aristotle’s Physics. In exploring the working mechanics of our reality, Aristotle created foundations of thought that became important to western institutions and religions, like Christianity. Aristotle’s work greatly influenced the thirteenth-century Italian priest Thomas Aquinas, who utilized aspects of Aristotle’s philosophy of nature to confirm the existence of God as the omnipotent architect of the universe. Metaphysics often encompasses or overlaps with the philosophy of science—for example, as scientists grapple with questions related to humanity’s literal and figurative place in the universe.
Historical Figures of Eastern Philosophy
Learn how these notable eastern philosophers shaped their cultures with religion and philosophical breakthroughs throughout the history of philosophy:
Laozi (born circa 570 BCE): The historical existence of Laozi, or Lao Tzu, is disputed, but some believe the Chinese philosopher is the author of the Tao Te Ching, a manuscript central to the philosophical religion known as Daoism (or Taoism). The metaphysical and ethical philosophy promotes living in harmony with nature and doing no harm to others.
Confucius (551–479 BCE): The teachings of this Chinese philosopher and politician formulated the basic tenets of East Asian societies. Known as Confucianism, the Chinese philosophy encouraged family loyalty, ancestral appreciation, and education—concepts that remain important to modern Chinese traditions.
Siddhartha Gautama (born in fifth century BCE): Historians and academics dispute the facts of the life of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha. By some traditions, he was born into an aristocratic family and enjoyed an entitled life until he decided to pursue a nomadic and ascetic lifestyle. Over time, people attributed teachings to him on self-restraint, meditation, and mindfulness—ideas that grew into a popular world religion.
Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī (1207–1273): A thirteenth-century Persian poet, Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī wrote Quranic verses and Sufi poems that scholars still translate and publish today. A large part of philosophy in Rumi’s poetry is his set of values around love and religion. His philosophy of life focused on using art and self-expression to bring humans closer to God.
Historical Figures of Western Philosophy
Ancient Greek philosophers established western philosophy as early as the sixth century BCE. Here are a handful of Greek philosophy figures who created theoretical foundations and frameworks that future generations could use to question their own complex societies:
Socrates (470–399 BCE): The Athenian philosopher Socrates is credited as the founding father of western philosophy and the Socratic method—a form of questioning that scholars in multiple areas of philosophy use to pinpoint shortcomings in logic or beliefs. His teachings were never published but lived on through the work of his student, Plato.
Plato (428/427–348/347 BCE): An influential thinker of the classical Greek period, Plato is famous for his theory of forms, which questions the connection between our minds and reality. He is also remembered for his several published works, like The Republic, which communicated his social and political philosophy.
Aristotle (384–322 BCE): The philosopher Aristotle was a star pupil of Plato’s (another ancient philosopher) and went on to found his own school, called Lyceum. During his career, Aristotle collected and simplified the philosophies of his predecessors and contributed to philosophical work in nearly every aspect of classical Greek culture. He was the first ancient philosopher to analyze the concept of free will.
René Descartes (1596–1650): A French mathematician and philosopher, René Descartes is best known for the existentialism theories he put forth in Discourse on the Method and his statement: “I think, therefore I am.” Descartes’ natural philosophy and metaphysical inquiries, as well as his thoughts on the existence of God, established him as a pioneer of modern philosophy.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831): German philosopher Georg Hegel is best known for his metaphysical concept known as idealism. The concept dictates that the perceptions of a self-conscious mind result in the most accurate interpretations of concrete objects. His work had a dramatic impact on western philosophy in the twentieth century and influenced the works of philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche.

Good morning, students!
Welcome to your first day at Paradiso Boarding School! I'm Ms. Adler, here to make sure all of you new arrivals can have a smooth transition into what will become your new home for - hopefully! - the next 8 years of your life.
As you are no doubt aware, Paradiso is the premier institution of middle and high level education in the Kingdom of Heaven. You, dear students, are privileged among the privileged. Here you will learn all you need in order to perform your role during adulthood.
Now, most of you were probably homeschooled all your life, and the idea of getting out from under your parents' wings seems very scary! But rest assured - it's an important part in the development of any elf. Your life away from home and your contact with other students and the faculty will teach you self-discipline and how to live harmoniously in society.
In addition to learning about history and the natural sciences, you will be taught a variety of subjects like art and music, as well as combat-oriented skills. Among these is the manipulation of our world's most important resource: Aether.
Aether is the very life force of the world. As descendants of the divine, we elves are attuned to it, and thus are able to manipulate it with training. Aether lingers in the air but cannot be propagated through it, so each student will be tasked with developing their own Aether Focus in order to better make use of it. Your focus is personal and speaks a lot about you as a person - so choose your design carefully.
You have certainly taken notice of the armband on your uniforms. These are personalized and must be worn at all times. The color on the armband identifies your grade, with the ones you all have right now - red - representing grade 1. Further grades will move along the spectrum of visible light - orange for grade 2, yellow for grade 3, and so on. Grade 8, your final year here, is represented by white.
As a safety measure, you must wear your uniforms both inside and outside the school grounds. While you have access to the entire colony, your uniforms will serve as a means of identifying you as students of Paradiso even in other Sectors, and the barcode inside the armband will help others identify you should there be any issue.
That is all for now! Please head back to your dorms and familiarize yourselves with your new dorm-mates. Good relations to those around you are paramount to a healthy life. Classes start later today, so please refer to your personal schedules and don't be late! If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to consult one of the many BN-UU7 units roaming the school grounds. They exist to serve.
We hope this is the start of a fruitful period in your lives. I'll see you all soon. Have a nice day!

Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Alberta legislature Saturday to express their discontent with Premier Danielle Smith and the UCP government.
The demonstration was one of many in the province, with attendees representing a wide variety of issues including the LGBTQ2S+ community, education, health care, seniors and Albertans with disabilities.
"I think the message that people want to send is that enough is enough when it comes to attacks on our public institutions on health care, education and even just quite frankly our democratic processes," said Bradley Lafortune, executive director of public interest Alberta.
At the rally, demonstrators from different groups shared their concerns with several pieces of legislation the UCP government has introduced. [...]

Den Norske Filmskolen talked to Tarjei and "Catalina" producer August Colding about his director debut and getting NFI grant for it
" Tarjei Sandvik Moe and August Colding make a short film with NFI support
Photo: Camilla Pavlikova Sandland
The year got off to a great start for cohort 13 alumni screenwriter Tarjei Sandvik Moe and producer August Colding. With production support from NFI, they realized the short film "Catalina" where Tarjei is in charge of direction and script and all the department managers are from Cohort 13. The film will be Tarjei's debut as a short film director.
The Norwegian Film Institute recently presented the five short films that received a total of 5.2 million in production support in the latest award round. Among the selected projects was the short film "Catalina", directed and written by Tarjei Sandvik Moe, which was awarded 750,000. Tarjei graduated from the screenwriting department of the film school's cohort 13 in the summer of 2024 and the short film is produced by cohort 13 colleague August Colding and True Content Productions. The team includes photographer Mikkel Lyng-Jørgensen, production designer Rikke Seim Trana, editor Mariel Melø Hansen and sound designer Paula Franke, all of whom attended the film school with Tarjei and August.
"Catalina" is about a young drama teacher at Skien High School who, through a horrible winter day, tries to remain true to himself and his artistic visions as an Ibsen director, while his girlfriend, the school system and the present stand in his way.
In her artistic assessment, film consultant Nina Barbosa Blad describes the project as unique and exciting and highlights Tarjei's broad experience from both film and stage: "This is Tarjei Sandvik Moe's first professional short film as a director, after he has shown good results in the short films he has written. Here he has a good team behind him, and his formidable experience as an actor and his clear vision convince that this will be a unique and exciting film."
We spoke with director and screenwriter Tarjei Sandvik Moe and producer August Colding right after the happy news was announced.
Tarjei Sandvik Moe: "I have no interest in making safe films"
Tarjei Sandvik Moe and the rest of the scriptwriters from class 13 at the theater premiere at Dramatikkens hus in April 2024. The scriptwriters wrote and directed six one-act plays that were performed to a packed audience, an event that has become a tradition for the screenwriting students in the film school's graduating class.
Tarjei Sandvik Moe, you have written scripts for other directors both at film school and for short films that you have made outside of school. What made you take the step into the directorial role on this project ?
-I've actually also directed a bit of short film and stage and audio drama in recent years and have some previous experience as an assistant director in the performing arts field, in addition to my screenwriting education from the Film School - so it doesn't feel like a whole new world to be directing it here. The exciting difference now is that I have a larger, professional budget to work with, even though the money quickly runs out in film production outside of school.
But to the question: Some projects it is obvious that I will write for others, while some I am drawn to direct myself - and this was one of them. It is probably about the fact that my cinematic visions here had a form of specificity to them. I became curious about trying to pursue this myself, in collaboration with a good artistic team. This is if I got the trust of a producer, production company, and film support from somewhere. Now that all this might fall into place, I think I will drive on like a madman, and then it will sink or swim(Tarjei uses expression "briste eller bære", literal translation is burst or bear). You never know how it will go, and I have no interest in making a safe film.
In many other projects, I am the one who is connected to a director's basic idea, which excites me (such as the graduation film from the Film School). Or it is my basic idea - but since I may not have such specific visions, I would rather see my material meet the gaze and expression of another director. It is a great privilege and incredibly educational to be able to do both.
Tarjei Sandvik Moe received the award for best screenplay for the graduation film "Jeg følte jeg måtte være her (I felt like I had to be here)" at the Amandus Blikkfang festival. Photo: Amandus Blikkfang
What do you want to explore in this short film?
-I want to explore so much. If I were to highlight one thing, it would be what it's like to be a human being who in some way has to relate to other people. That sounds general, but it's not easy, that kind of stuff.
Several of the short films you have written take place in and have a slant on the art world. What fascinates you dramatically about characters who want to express themselves through art?
-I remember watching "The Circus" with Charlie Chaplin when I was little. Chaplin, in the role of "The Tramp", is at the beginning of the film on the run from the police, he runs as hard as he can, and into a circus full of spectators, and from the moment he is inside the circus circle, he is something else, he is involuntarily framed in art, culture. And everyone in the audience laughs - now he is theirs. I like that moment very much. So such things have always fascinated me. Dramatically speaking, it is probably as simple as how people relate to art and culture says a lot about them, both individually and collectively - psychologically, philosophically, politically and sociologically (among other things!). But it is important not to just make "art about art", and I also hope that my films are about something else, even when they are ostensibly about art. I don't even know if "art" or "culture" in itself is something I think of as a theme, but it can certainly be a means on the way to exploring something else. Other times you can manage without it.
Still from the graduation film "I felt like I had to be here" directed by Sara Moland and written by Tarjei Sadvik Moe. Photo: Signe Edelboe Rasmussen.
What does it mean to be trusted as a short film director by NFI?
-Boring answer, but I'm simply very grateful. I'm generally grateful to live in a country that has such arrangements. And I hope we take care of it: That money for large and small, narrow and broad projects, in all possible fields of art can continue to allow us to do our thing, in the hope of perhaps getting closer to something - that we can share with the audience. Even if we don't always succeed. But if you scale down more and more, we lose the opportunity to work with low shoulders, and then we don't take as big risks, and then art becomes less significant.
So no, I'm happy, inspired, and I'm taking this seriously, but I'm also trying to shut out everything external, and not be too afraid of making mistakes. That's not good for anything. I'm also so fucking excited to see all the other films being made in Norway in the future, it feels like there are good vibes here in this little film country.
August Colding: "That the NFI has received the project so well says a lot about Tarjei's script and his vision as a director.
Producer August Colding
August Colding, how did the collaboration between you and Tarjei on this particular project begin?
The collaboration started when Tarjei introduced me to his personal project towards the end of Film School. The project was a feature film script with a very personal and, in my opinion, incredibly strong story. Tarjei and I have worked together many times, both in and out of school, but always as a screenwriter and producer. So when he mentioned that he would like to direct this himself, it suddenly turned into a new collaboration. But it also felt absolutely right.
Since the planned film project will be Tarjei's feature film debut as a director, we couldn't start working on the feature film directly. There are financial reasons for this, but if you look at it from a slightly more positive angle, it's fantastic to have the opportunity to explore a feature film in this way. By making a short film with the same universe and characters, we can dive deep into the story and see what works, and what interests us and an audience the most. Of course, the short film should stand on its own, as an independent artistic project, but the process also feels like an exploration of the feature film, which is a fantastic opportunity to have.
What are you most looking forward to about continuing your collaboration with your school colleagues?
-Most of the department managers are from our cohort at the Film School, so it's really wonderful. It feels safe and good to step into this professional world with familiar people. Hopefully they'll be a little more forgiving of the mistakes I'll make along the way.
What does the support from the Norwegian Film Institute mean?
-Anyone who knows Tarjei knows that he doesn't write short texts, and this film is no exception. Without the film school's time constraints on the films we produced there, he has really let his pen fly, so it will be a long short film. This is something both the film industry and film school teachers often warn against, but we thought it was best to go all in on the style instead of compromising before we had even tried. That's why it's incredibly nice that NFI has received the project so well, and that they support a debuting director. I think it says a lot about Tarjei's script and his visions as a director.
At the Norwegian Film School, we look forward to seeing the finished film and congratulates everyone who received support in this award round from the Norwegian Film Institute. In addition to Tarjei and August, there were several alumni among the five selected projects:
Jay Choi (MFA cohort 3) received 750,000 for "We Are What We Eat", which she directed and wrote.
Louise Beyer from Storm Film (BFA class of 12) is a producer on Liv Joelle Barbosa Blad's "Gaven" which received 850,000
Congratulations to everyone!"

You may expect All We Imagine as Light to be an angry film—an indictment of the country from the eyes of those who have been marginalised. After all, Kapadia has a right to be angry. She is currently battling a police case that’s dragged on for the better part of the last decade, for participating in protests against the appointment of the actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as the president of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where she was a directing student from 2015–2018. The protests against the appointment of Chauhan were part of a larger movement of resistance led by students against an attempt by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—the Hindu right-wing party—to curb the independence of educational and creative institutions by appointing compliant ‘yes men’ in positions of power when it came into office in 2014. After she was charged with rioting, Kapadia’s scholarship as a student was suspended. In her first full-length documentary film, A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021), she relayed the truth of the protest movement at FTII and the brutality with which the State cracked down on students. Premiering in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, the film won the Golden Eye award. It still hasn’t seen a release in India. And while her alma mater FTII and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jumped at the opportunity to congratulate Kapadia on winning the Grand Prix this year for All We Imagine as Light, it’s highly unlikely that even this film will see a wide release in her home country, due to her history of dissent against this government.

Story Preview: Magic/Dark Academia AU in which skating, linguistics, and time travel intersect
Professor Baranovskaya loudly cleared her throat and placed a hand on Yuuri’s trembling shoulder.
“Everyone, please take a moment to welcome your newest classmate,” she airily announced, to a rather stilted round of clapping. “If you didn’t get a chance to meet him at the Prospective Students Banquet last December– ” (to Viktor’s chagrin, even louder giggling erupted, making him want to throttle Isabella Yang) “ – or over the last few weeks, allow me to introduce first year student Katsuki Yuuri, hailing from the town of Hasetsu, Japan. I’m told by Professor Cialdini that Yuuri’s grasp of Reverberatory Theory could rival a faculty member’s, so I’m sure you’ll find him to be a valuable resource.”
Curious whispers filled the room at this last sentence. Aside from Viktor and just two other students – 4th years Sasha Samokhina and Kostya Kozhennikov – no one else had actually managed to grasp the intricacies of Reverberation, particularly when it came to its grammatical rules.
“That being said, do try not to resent his prowess too much,” Professor Baranovskaya firmly finished.
Their eyes met and Viktor felt a bit insulted by her lingering gaze. Resent Yuuri?
Him?!?
Once again, Viktor reflected on how misunderstood he was at Pax. If he tried to befriend promising students like Sasha or his fellow dual major classmate Nao Yasutani, it was automatically regarded with skepticism, as if the Institute's top Reverberator couldn’t possibly want companionship without having ulterior motives.
It made him want to scream.
Had Professor Baranovskaya forgotten how he’d begged Drs. Piseev and Leroy to accompany them on the scouting trip to Japan, back in April? Had she conveniently forgotten that it was Viktor who had so zealously insisted on Yuuri’s recruitment to Pax in the first place, well before that wondrous video had been uploaded to the internet?
---
The above excerpt is a preview of a new 'Alternate First Meeting' Yuri!!! on Ice WIP/series I'm working on: a friends-to-lovers, magical dark academia AU that I was inspired to write after finishing the books Vita Nostra (by Maryna and Serhiy Dyachenko), and Babel (by RF Kuang). Both are so gripping and imaginative, and I couldn't stop thinking about how my favorite characters might intersect with the rich settings/magic systems in either.
Below is a tentative summary; if this sounds interesting, I hope you'll give me a follow!
---
The first known instance of Reverberation – the phenomenon in which a skater produces language and energy with their body, universally felt and understood by all in proximity – occurred in 1952, when Dick Button performed the first triple jump. Over 50 years later, Viktor Nikiforov is skating’s most prolific Reverberator and star student at the University of Chicago’s Pax Institute: the world’s premier research center dedicated to the training of Reverberators for global diplomacy.
When Katsuki Yuuri finds himself being aggressively recruited by his idol to enroll at Pax, he has no idea that the two of them will eventually become best friends. Or, that they will one day co-lead a student uprising once they uncover the true, sinister aim of their education: to master the art of stationary Reverberation that transfers language onto blank pages and creates enough energy to rip through time

(Preferably fantasy) games with a school setting, and a focus on non-fatal violence and mystery solving?
THEME: Magic School Mysteries
Hello friend, so I have a bit of a wide spectrum of options for you today, some of which are more focused on magic, some more focused on mystery, and some more focused on violence. I hope you find something that hits what you're looking for!
Lofi Bards to Study and Relax To, by Ross Eaglesham.
You and your friends are students at a magical high-school, college or university and exams are coming up! Go on magical adventures, reveal ancient secrets and forge deep bonds with your friends - just make sure you don’t miss class!
To help you on your journey, you’re equipped with one of your most prized possessions - the Notestrider. When a reel of magical tape is placed in this small, arcane box, it plays a recording of whatever is stored on the tape; usually through a strange pair of mechanical earmuffs. You and your tight-knit group of friends all put together a mixtape of your favourite songs for studying - 'lofi bards to study and relax to' - and the relaxing beats and chilled out vibes might just be enough to see you through the crazy world of arcane education.
With many secrets to uncover while you’re at a magical institution, Lofi Bards to Study and Relax To looks to have quite a significant capacity to really sink you into the skin of your character. Music can be very good at helping you tune into your emotions and put you in a specific state of mind, and since the Notestrider is meant to help your characters prepare and focus for all of the struggles ahead, you’ll be using that music to put yourself into the shoes of your character.
This is another game that doesn’t seem to prioritize violence at all, but it can make whatever mysteries you decide to unravel incredibly personal. There's also an expansion that includes Artifacts and character options for you if you want access to a broader span of game elements. If you want to really emphasize the student experience in a slightly more magical setting, I’d definitely recommend this game.
The Osterman Academy of Magical Arts, by Wheels Within Wheels Publishing. @ostermad-blog
Welcome to the Osterman Academy of Magical Arts, the premier school for spell craft. Our faculty are leaders in their fields, our staff unparalleled, and our students extraordinary.
All OAMA students are required to reside on campus for the duration of their studies, but the wide variety of campus events ensure that students always have many ways to spend their time, including student-run clubs, a bustling student center, athletic meets, and trips to nearby urban centers.
OAMA also boasts two unique educational opportunities: the class trip and individual projects. Every year, students in each class go to a special destination for a more hands-on educational experience. Furthermore, at the end of each year, all students pursue an individual project tailored to their specific interests and supervised by one of our esteemed faculty.
The Osterman Academy of Magical Arts has a sliding scale to determine how popular magic is, and how entrenched it is in the world around you. It comes with a grand total of 66 backgrounds to choose from or roll randomly for, including Clown-gician (you thought this was clown school) and Fun Guy (secret colony of fungi masquerading as the life of the party in human form). You’ll also choose your character’s class schedule, create friendships with other characters, and take exams to determine how well they did in their courses.
There isn’t much that allows you to do violence, but if you want to solve mysteries in this game, I think the various character strengths and school classes present in this game give you a really diverse set of approaches to finding answers and solving problems.
Mystic Punks, by mysticpunks.
Students have gone missing at Star Valley High School and no one seems to care. You determine that their disappearances are the result of an otherworldly invasion.
As a teenage misfit, you’ve only ever used your mystic powers to perform dark rituals, but now those powers are the only thing that can save your classmates and stop a supernatural legion from consuming you and your school.
Based on the solo RPG Mystic Punks: The Collected Edition, Mystic Punks Tabletop RPG invites you and your friends to delve deeper into occult mysteries and explore beyond Star Valley High School.
With supernatural threats abounding and dark threats surrounding you and your peers, Mystic Punks probably has a big chance to bring violence and conflict to the fore. The original game appears to be devoted to a solo roleplaying experience, but the Quickstart appears to allow for group gaming as well. I can’t guarantee that the violence is non-fatal however; this game is sold as a horror experience, so the threat of death probably looms over all of your characters.
Student Protectors of Malaysia, by Aaron Lim / @ehronlime
You are a 17-year-old secondary school student with extraordinary powers. You’ve connected with friends in your school who have similar powers and have been working together to protect your town from supernatural threats. It’s been hard juggling your commitment to use your powers for good with your responsibilities to your families and your studies, but it’s been rewarding.
Now, you’re almost done with school and you really should be focusing on your preparation for the SPM exams, but threat has surfaced that could mean disaster for the entire town if you do not act quickly. Your final year awaits…
Student Protectors of Malaysia probably best fits all of the criteria that we’re looking for here. There are three phases to the game: Student, Protector and Marking. In your Student phase, you’re using your abilities to investigate mysteries in order to figure out what exactly the threat is, and to prepare for whatever your big action scene is going to be. In the Protector phase, you’ll be targeting the threat, whether that be a roaming monster, a rogue magic user, or a more mundane (but powerful) threat. You’ll have to do this while balancing schoolwork, family obligations, and just daily teenage life. Finally, the Marking Phase reflects downtime, assessing how smoothly you solved the problem and how your adventure affected your journey towards personal goals.
The system for this game is influenced by Powered by the Apocalypse, with moves written out for specific situations, like Take Decisive Action, or Recall information. You’ll roll 2d6 and add modifiers up to a maximum of +3. There’s also bits and pieces from Forged in the Dark, most prominently in the Downtime phase and the Stress that your characters accrue through adventures and relieve through hobbies. The game definitely skews more towards secret superheroes than it does towards a magic school, but you could restrict the electives available to your students to make their powers seem more magical and otherworldly than technical or genetic.
The “Gardening” Club, by Wizard of Ox.
Welcome to our very legitimate high school club where we don’t actually do a lot of gardening! We are open to everyone: cheerleaders, talking vegetables and even people who actually garden. We only have one rule: keep our true agenda a secret. Grab a nice cup of herbal tea, water the cacti and search for clues. We must get to the root of things!
You are a group of high school students who, despite being different from each other, have an interest in common: solving mysteries. Since a detective club would be too on the nose, you made a “gardening” club as a front. Each one of you has different abilities you can use to get to the root of things, as well as codenames that give special powers. Can you work together and find out what is going on?
I’m very intrigued by this game. It feels like it would be very easy to modify to fit a setting of your choice. The instruction sheet is only 5 pages, and all of the character concepts are charmingly plant-themed (with a little bit of magic on the side)! The group will set out on missions to discover clues, hoping to piece together the answers to a larger mystery. You will collaboratively fill out a Deduction Tree to figure out how all of the clues connect. If you like collaborative mystery solving this is absolutely the game for you!

Update News
So, I think I can return back to a semi-normal schedule.
Next chapter of Department of Mysteries should be out next weekend and that should mark the return of an every-two-week schedule.
Thanks for your patience. Here's a sneak peak (not edited yet, subject to small changes, etc.):
Ministry Education Changes Report Early Success!
Minister Daishou’s education reforms, introduced at Hogwarts this year, are already reporting progress.
For the last few years, Hogwarts has faced mounting public pressure after a number of disastrous hiring decisions by the Hogwarts Board of Directors, most notably led by Headmaster Ukai. In addition, many have claimed that our country’s premiere school has fallen woefully behind in safety standards, including a rash of petrifications three years ago from a still unknown cause and--of course--the tragic kidnapping and death of a student last year during the Triwizard Tournament held on school grounds.
With some even calling for Headmaster Ukai’s resignation, Minister Daishou answered public pressure and instituted new reform measures. This includes Ministry pre-approval of curriculum and hiring decisions, starting with the war decorated Auror Minaho Ono taking over for Defense Against the Dark Arts this year.
These measures are already being heralded as a success, as the Prophet learned in our exclusive interview with Deputy Minister Kuroo.
“Children are our future,” the Deputy Minister said. “And we had the Ministry understand that the most important part of making them thrive is providing a safe environment where they can focus on their education and leave the messy politics for the adults. After all, the last thing that belongs in school walls is politics.”
When asked about new professor Minaho Ono, Deputy Minister Kuroo had this to say.
“Oh, she’s doing brillant already,” he told us. “Of course, it’s a challenge catching up the students after years of Headmaster’s Ukai’s, well, less well considered hiring decisions. However, we are hearing every evidence that she’s been mentoring the students wonderfully, a result we should see come with the O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s this year.”
On student adjustment, Deputy Minister Kuroo wasn’t worried. “The students love the changes. In fact, I’ve been hearing from my son Tetsuro that the students are even hoping that the Ministry is allowed to do more in the upcoming--”
The newspaper caught on fire and rotated in a rather ominous flaming orb above Kuroo’s wand.
“Now, I definitely never said that,” Kuroo commented. “Think I can sue for libel?”
“The paper or your father,” Suga asked. “Either way, legally yes; practically no. I don’t think any barrister’s going to hear your case.”
“Bloody practicality,” Kurooo muttered in a tone of someone deeply shackled by the coils of the mundane.
“Anyone else vaguely concerned that the Prophet’s being even more obvious that they’re the Minister’s little lap dog.” Oikawa poked at the ashes that Kuroo had finally let drop. “I wonder what they’re wanting for treats. The Minister better watch out for his pant leg.”
Iwaizumi snorted. “Can’t believe they’re our only real paper.”
“They didn’t used to be.” Suga sighed, fiddling with his silver and green tie. “A lot of other ones were around before the war; but, they went out of business or, well, were put out of business by the Ghosts. The Daily Prophet was always the most…circumvent about their criticisms of the Giant.”
“And to the cowards, go the spoils,” Kuroo mock toasted. “Too bad, I heard some of the old ones were golden--especially the cartoons.”
“Oh yeah, they’re awesome,” Bokuto brightened. “Great Aunt Ena’s still got some Mad Bats preserved in the attic!”
Iwaizumi quirked an eyebrow. “Mad…Bats?
“It was kind of a satire strip about, um….oh,” Suga’s eyes went to the Great Hall’s entrance. “That’s Daichi. I need to go talk to him about our Muggle Studies project.”
“Don’t you have class in like,” Kuroo checked his watch, “twelve minutes?”
“It’ll only take a bit,” Suga said distractedly, already heading for the door.
The group went back to their breakfast.
Bokuto made a weird twitch movement with his jaw.
They ignored it.
He did it again a few minutes later.
They continued to ignore it.
Bokuto lifted his toast as if he was going to start scraping it across his mouth.
Iwaizumi whacked him on the arm. “You’ve gotta quit doing that. Professor Takeda nearly called you out in class because he thought you, like, accidentally transfigured your teeth or something.”
“But, it’s itchy!” Bokuto complained, sticking out his tongue and poking at it…which didn’t really make anything look less weird. “Why didn’t Matsukawa and Hanamaki tell us the leaf was going to be so itchy?”
“Because they’re sadists,” Oikawa said reasonably.
Iwaizumi laughed. “What he said.”
“Look, just drink some hot tea or something. It helps, promise.” Kuroo shoved some at him. “We only need to make it like a bit more than two weeks.”
“That’s a lot!” Bokuto pouted.
“Just distract yourself,” Iwaizumi told him. “Weren’t you going to talk to Akaashi? How’d that go?”
“I haven’t done it yet,” Bokuto mumbled.
The rest looked at him.
“What? I’m still thinking about what I want to say,” Bokuto said. “It’s scary! I don’t like this. Talking to Keiji shouldn't be scary; it’s Keiji.”
Before they could respond, Suga dropped back to his seat. “Sorry about that.”
“Figure out the project,” Iwaizumi asked.
“The project?” Suga tilted his head. “Oh, yeah, we did. I think we know exactly how to go about it now. Anyway, how’s everyone else’s classes going?”
Under the table, Kuroo kicked Oikawa in the shin.
Iwaizumi shrugged. “Fine, I guess. Really the only one that’s a hassle is Defense.”
Kuroo kicked Oikawa again and Oikawa turned to glare at him. Kuroo met his eyes before looking discreetly at Suga’s neck, then back at Oikawa.
“Oh, the patronus? Yeah, I’m not making progress with mine either.” Suga fiddled with his tie again, the colors red and gold.
Oikawa’s eyes lit up with unholy glee and he looked back at Kuroo. Kuroo smirked.
“Wait, why are you worried about patronuses already?” Bokuto asked. “She said we’ve got to the end of the year.”
“I know, but we’ve got the rest of our N.E.W.T.s then, too,” Suga said. “Do you really want to worry about both of them at once.”
Bokuto shrugged.
Meanwhile, unnoticed by the others, Oikawa and Kuroo were doing their level best at achieving spontaneous mental communication through eye contact alone.
“The Herbology N.E.W.T shouldn’t be too bad,” Iwaizumi said. “Professor Shimada’s got us working on cross-pollinating our own hybrids so it should be mostly done by the time they review them for the exam.”
Oikawa glanced at Suga then back at Kuroo, tilting his head in a question. Both paused before simultaneously shaking their heads.
“Yeah, I’m not that worried about Arithmancy either,” Bokuto said. “I mean the main thing with that is meeting Professor Yamiji’s publication timeline. Compared to that, the exam’s gonna be easy.”
“Sounds like it won’t be too bad, then.” Suga gathered his bag.
“Yeah, probably because we aren’t crazy enough to take seven classes,” Iwaizumi deadpanned.
“Right, how is that going…,” Suga trailed off, finally catching Kuroo and Oikawa whispering to each other. “What are you two doing?”
“Nothing,” they both answered quickly.
Suga blinked.
“What were you saying, Suga,” Oikawa distracted him.
“I was just asking how you’re class schedule’s going,” Suga said.
“Oh, that. Fantastic,” Oikawa gave a thumbs up. “Invigorating even. Nothing to worry about.”
“...Okay.” Suga stood up. “Well, speaking of class, I better get going. Are you sure you’re alright?”
“We’re wonderful,” Kuroo agreed, throwing an arm around Oikawa’s shoulder. “Better hurry to class, though. Don’t want to be late.”
Oikawa beamed. “Absolutely. Have fun!”
Suga shook his head and walked away, deciding to ignore his two friends’ decidedly weird behavior. He probably shouldn’t have known better.
