8th Avenue/W 46th Street, Manhattan (No. 3)
One Worldwide Plaza is the largest tower of a three-building, mixed-use commercial and residential complex in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The complex, known collectively as Worldwide Plaza, was completed in 1989.
One Worldwide Plaza is a commercial office tower on the west side of Eighth Avenue, while Two Worldwide Plaza is a residential condominium tower west of the center of the block, and Three Worldwide Plaza is a low-rise condominium residential building with street level stores on Ninth Avenue, to the west of the towers. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was the designer for the office complex, and the residential complex was designed by Frank Williams.
The complex, whose component skyscrapers are among the list of tallest buildings in New York City, occupies the entire city block bounded by Eighth Avenue, Ninth Avenue, 49th Street, and 50th Street. One Worldwide Plaza is built on the site of New York City's third Madison Square Garden.
Designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the Worldwide Plaza complex was developed by William Zeckendorf, Jr. and Victor Elmaleh of the World Wide Group. The building of One Worldwide Plaza was documented in a Channel 4 / PBS mini-series and a companion book Skyscraper: The Making of a Building by Karl Sabbagh. One Worldwide Plaza is a 50-story, 1.5 million square feet (140,000 m2), 778-foot (237 m) office skyscraper. The building has three separate entrances to accommodate the various tenants in the building, which include the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore, the Japanese investment bank Nomura, and, formerly, the international advertising agency of Ogilvy & Mather. The base of the building is made of granite and precast concrete. The tower facade is made of brick. The building is crowned by a copper roof and glass pyramid known as "David's Diamond" after the architect, David Childs.
A mid-block public plaza separates One Worldwide Plaza from the residential buildings of Two Worldwide Plaza and Three Worldwide Plaza. The public plaza is a bonus space granted under New York City Department of City Planning. The creation and maintenance of the public plaza resulted in permission to build additional floors in the office tower. The landscaping of the plaza contains over 40 trees and numerous plantings, and a cafe. Public seating is available year round. The center of the plaza is highlighted by a fountain created by Sidney Simon called "The Four Seasons". Four female statues, each modelled by Molly Ackerman and representing a season, hold up a globe. A theater space lies beneath the public plaza; it was originally a six-screen movie theatre but is now occupied by five Off-Broadway theatres known as New World Stages. Access is gained by two kiosk buildings: one on 49th Street and the other on 50th Street. The 50th Street New York City Subway station (C and E trains) is underneath. The southbound platform was renovated when One Worldwide Plaza was built.
New York Times architecture critic Paul Goldberger praised the project's layout and the tower's design as "sumptuous". However, he criticized the cheapness of the building's materials including the use of brick in place of stone and the sparing use of granite as well as the lack of mullions on the tower's windows. He also noted the building's inspiration from the New York Life Building and Crown Building.

Glazed fins wrap Seattle’s Rosling Center by Miller Hull Partnership
Shading devices help reduce glare at The Rosling Center, a research facility focused on public health designed by architecture firm The Miller Hull Partnership for the University of Washington.
The building – officially called The Hans Rosling Center for Population Health – is located on the University of Washington (UW) campus in central Seattle.
Rosling Center is a research facility
Set on a gently sloping site, the eight-storey facility encompasses 300,000 square feet (27,870 square metres). It sits between the university's historic core, which dates to the 19th century, and an emerging innovation district.
The centre is named after Hans Rosling, a Swedish physician and professor who promoted a data-driven approach to improving human health.
The centre is on a sloping site
Designed by local firm The Miller Hull Partnership, the interdisciplinary building is designed to accommodate those studying critical global issues such as poverty, healthcare access, climate change and Covid-19.
The project was made possible by a $210 million gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, along with funding from the university and state legislature.
The Mill Hull Partnership designed the project
"It will serve as a central hub for faculty, researchers and students to work together with local and global partners to address some of the world's most significant challenges across three key areas – human health, environmental resilience, and social and economic equity," said The Miller Hull Partnership.
Rectangular in shape, the building was partly carved away at the ground level to form a large covered porch and urban stair, the team said. Several different treatments were used for the facades, depending upon their sun exposure and the surrounding context. On the west elevation, a glazed wall features glass louvres that are nearly a metre deep.
"Three-foot-deep glass fins provide a dynamic shade and shadow composition that protects occupants from west sun and glare," the team said. "Though physically static, the fins act as a canvas for changing light conditions throughout the day."
The building is rectangular in shape
The eastern facade, which faces the historic campus, also has a glass wall and fins, along with custom, precast concrete panels.
The shading devices are more subdued on this side to help the building blend with its neighbours. Moreover, an aggregate that matches nearby buildings was used for the concrete panels.
Glass forms the facade
"The building both defines and responds to its context," said Ruth Baleiko, the project design at Miller Hull.
"We looked for ways to build upon the physical and social structures of the site and leverage those elements in conjunction with environmental conditions to create a building that is, as much as possible, of its place."
Glass fins protrude from the research facility
Inside, the layout is intended to be flexible and to foster interactivity. The ground level holds classrooms and social areas, while the upper levels contain workspaces and collaboration areas.
On the ground floor, multiple entrances, or "front doors", create a welcoming atmosphere and provide an immediate visual connection to public spaces.
The centre's ground level has large windows
On upper levels, four types of work areas were created – small shared offices for up to two people, larger shared offices, open workstations and drop-in workstations.
"A set of four office types cater to various working styles and are organised as a collection of neighbourhoods, which breaks down the scale of each floor and democratises access to daylight, views and fresh air," the team said.
An open-plan seating area by the stairs
The building has a number of sustainable elements, including a high-performing facade, operable windows, ample daylight, low-flow fixtures and a rainwater collection system. The project aims to achieve LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.
The Rosling Center is the first and largest integrated design-build project that has been completed on the UW campus, according to the team. Miller Hull worked on the project with Lease Crutcher Lewis, a Settle-based contractor.
Expansive views from the upper levels
The departments housed at the centre include the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation (IHME), the UW Department of Global Health, parts of the UW School of Public Health, and the offices of the UW Population Health Initiative. All of them have played some type of role in the response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Miller Hull Partnership was started in 1977 by David Miller and Robert Hull. Other projects by the firm include a fire station on Washington's Mercer Island that has large bi-fold glass doors, enabling a quick exit for emergency trucks.

Top Tips for Choosing Your Next Knuckle Boom Truck
I sell boom trucks. I also own a home that has a septic tank, a shingled roof, drywall on the walls, brick on the outside of the house, and a host of other things. I have no idea about how to shingle a roof, what shingles to use; I certainly have no idea about how to form a septic tank, lay weeping tile or mix mortar and lay bricks. So, where would I start if I had to complete any one of these?
1. Call an industry professional!
What’s an industry professional? I would say a time-tested company that has been in the industry for a substantial period. Such companies usually have standalone facilities. The companies also stock booms, indicating that they sell boom trucks regularly and are stable.
Call a company that participates in your industries’ associations; it shows that they will support your company’s ability to do business better, and, to grow. An industry professional is someone who understands your business and needs because of the years of experience they have in dealing with that type of industry.
2. Define your needs
When you’re purchasing a boom truck, you are paying a large part for reach and capacity. Time and again we have a precast-concrete or poured-wall Company call and asks for a boom longer than they need, with capacities greater than they require. I will use septic tank companies as an example. I take a call from a company and they ask for a boom that will lift 25,000 pounds at 25’. I immediately respond, “Are you sure?” Normally my septic customer lift to 15’ and the capacity is 18,000 pounds, 24,000 pounds, or 27,000 pounds. There is a massive $100,000 price difference between those reaches and capacities. The response is almost always, “I do 18,000 pounds at 15’.” Now, we can get the proper proposal together for the customer.
3. New vs. Used
Ten plus years ago, before the recession in the United States, there were a large variety of used boom trucks. They were priced right and there were good quality choices available. Between 2008 and 2012 construction of both commercial and new homes was almost nonexistent. Therefore, few boom trucks were produced. Companies, which went bankrupt, had their equipment scooped up quickly by those few still building. In general, heavy spec’d trucks were not produced in large numbers either.
So, today, used trucks sell for a premium. But, because they are used, they require more money in repairs and upkeep, and, therefore, more downtime. If your company purchases a used truck, it is making a truck payment, paying for repairs and not able to use their truck. When you start to add up the true cost of ownership of used trucks, the cost of a new one is more reasonable than you might have thought.
4. Financing
Years ago, most companies paid for boom trucks by stroking a check. Today, the scenario is different. Now, most companies finance their purchase. Did you know that if you purchase a used boom truck it is financed over a shorter period of time at a higher interest rate? This means that your monthly payment for a used truck could cost more money monthly than a new unit. Again, when you factor in the cost of repairs of a used boom truck from day one vs a new unit that will go to work and not cost you downtime, which scenario works better for your company in the long run?
5. After-sales service
This is a big one and one that few companies inquire about. I always offer, to our current and prospective customers alike, how our company handles this aspect of our partnership. Let’s face it; the sale of a piece of equipment is the beginning of a partnership, but, by no means, the end. You need to know that the company you are dealing with looks at your business as a partnership and not just a deal. This is another reason to deal with a well-established company that has a proper network of repair facilities to handle your needs in whatever area your company is in.
6. Don’t assume you have all the answers
I was guilty of this in the not too distant past. For 20 years, we wouldn’t’ build boom trucks with aluminum beds. They were soft materials that quickly turned to wavy beds, tore easily and caused more problems than they were worth. When approached by an aluminum body manufacturer about buying aluminum platforms, I shut them down before hearing them out. Thankfully, the sales representative sent me an email that showed me the amazing differences in aluminum and how they would stand up against any steel platform now. Today, we supply our customers with many aluminum platforms, saving them a lot of weight, and they love them. The moral of the story? Ask your sales professional what they recommend and why. You might be pleasantly surprised.
7. Delivery
Whether you are going to pick your truck up at the facility it was assembled at or have it delivered from across the country, how is going to be in-serviced? When you go to the Ford dealership to pick up your new F150, the sales rep goes over the features and shows you how to program the radio, adjust the seat, turn on the 4 x 4, etc. I see, today, boom sales companies that just drop off a $400,000 boom truck and don’t properly run their owners through the operations. This is not only dangerous but will likely lead to the operator damaging the new boom. It is important to have a thorough familiarization with your new equipment. Make sure to ask up front about how the company deals with your in-service.
8. Training for Operators
Let’s not mistake your in-service familiarization with boom truck training. Make sure to ask what your operators will require. As of November 10, 2018, OSHA’s new boom truck rules came into effect. The question of what your company needs to do to have a “qualified operator” for your equipment needs to be answered. The company you choose to supply your boom truck may not have all the answers, but they should be able to give you the name and number of the company that will. Don’t get caught not knowing what your requirements are.
So, if I was going to shingle my roof, put in a new septic system or brick my house, the best way to sum it up is to quote the automotive legend Henry Ford when being interviewed by a young reporter, who asked, “How do you have all the answers?”; Ford replied “Let me remind you that I have a row of electric buttons in my office. All I have to do is press one of them to call the person who can answer any question on any subject I wish to know, relative to the business at hand. I take care of the business; they take care of the questions.
