Cover of the day: Day 2: Postcard sent on the centennial of the death of a Slovenian poet
Welp, I decided to continue this for my viewerbase of 0 :( But hey, here's hope that'll increase to 1 (OR EVEN MORE) in the near future
---
This postcard features a photograph of a bust of Slovenian poet France Prešeren, the description on the postcard for the bust is "Alojzij Gangl, France Prešeren, Marble 1895" (Here's another photo of the bust), According to NUK (National and University Library of Slovenia) This postcard was printed in 1949. The date this was sent is also interesting; February 8th 1949 which was the 100 year anniversary of Prešeren's death and the date the stamp on the cover was sent (The stamp, also being issued for the anniversary).
This postcard was sent from Metlika, a town in southeastern Slovenia. and Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia (The People's Republic of Slovenia, which was part of Yugoslavia at the time)
The message on the postcard says "In memory of today's date, less scary/horrifying"(Sorry the translation is a bit ambiguous)
This is also one of my favorite covers so please enjoy! Sorry I rambled so much, here's the postcard!

DETAILED
Luckily, Blaine’s phone has charged during his trip to the pizza place and the Maxi Mercator. Google Translate tells him that zvezda means star in Slovene. Or Slovenian. Google says both words are accurate.
Blaine catches himself in the mirror and he looks like he just rolled out of bed, which is fairly accurate. He didn’t even gel his hair. He looks like a mess and he considers refreshing himself up, but Kurt is waiting for him, so Blaine rushes back to the park.
Kurt sees him immediately.
“Well hello stranger,” he says with a smile.
They are practically strangers, that’s true.
“Hello yourself. Long time no see.”
Kurt claps his hands.
“I am not a tour guide, but I am a fellow American living in the city, so I can already take you to the best burger place in town,” Kurt jokes and Blaine barks out a laugh. Kurt then asks what Blaine has already seen from the city, and Blaine shamefully admits that he’s only seen the road from his apartment to Park Zvezda.
“And this big road from the inside of the taxi,” Blaine nods towards the road. All the busses and taxi’s pass it. The Mercator that he saw yesterday evening is also on this road.
“Slovenska Cesta,” Kurt tells him, “I am pretty certain that cesta means street. Same goes for ulica. Let’s start there, yeah.”
“Are you learning Slovene?” Blaine asks as they walk down the Slovenska Cesta.
Kurt shakes his head.
“No, I am only here for six months and everyone speaks English,” he says, “Of course I am picking up things as I go from context, like the cesta and ulica. I already know that vse means all, and popusti is sale. So popusti vse or vse popusti means that everything is on sale!”
“Ah yes, priorities,” Blaine laughs.
“Exactly.”
They turn right on Čopova ulica, the street that leads to Prešeren Square, or Prešernov trg in Slovene. Blaine can understand that trg probably means plaza or square. Prešeren Square is one of the most well-known places in Ljubljana, Blaine does know that. He isn’t fully unprepared. Before his departure he looked up some information about the city and the country.
Seeing the places in real life is still different. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings with detailed decorations. There is a statue of Prešeren, where people can sit underneath, and also a city model of Ljubljana’s city centre. You can cross the Ljubljanica, the river, to go to the other part of the city centre through the Triple Bridges, the Tromostovje. They walk over the middle bridge.
Also actually living here is different. Blaine isn’t here as a tourist, which is the main target for all the travel blogs he’s read beforehand. No, he’s here for serious business.
Kurt gives him a small to do list, based on his first week here.
“Get an Urbana card for public transport,” he starts, “I get student discount and I travel for max €20 a month, but usually a bus trip is €1,30 for 90 minutes. This includes transfers.”
“Alright.”
“And apply for a Temporary Resident Permit as soon as possible,” Kurt continues, “Print the forms at home, fill them in, and hand them in. You can’t do this digitally, so be prepared to wait eight hours for a small ten minute conversation.”
“What the fuck.”
Kurt nods.
“Yes, I now understand why there was already a line before opening hours and why people took lunch and books and pillows with them. It’s rough.”
“It sounds rough.”
“I also highly recommend downloading the Travana app for the bus schedule and the Bicikel app for BicikeLJ, the bike share system, although I also must add that biking here seems to be hazardous.”
“… Fun.”
“Oh, and a fun tip, but every first Sunday of the month, entrance to museums is free!”
“That is legitimately fun.”
“My last life tip is for the Boni, but you’re not a student, so it doesn’t apply to you.”
“The… what?”
“The študentska prehrana. Boni. Whatever you want to call it,” Kurt says with a shrug, “It’s a student meal system. Students can get cheap food at most restaurants for a small price, twice a day with a four hour interval between them. I think it’s a max price of €4,30 for a main course, side course, something healthy and water.”
Blaine lets out a whistle. The travel blog writers did write about Slovenian food, but he didn’t really pay attention to them. He went for pizza as his first meal. God, he truly is an American. He should take up on Kurt’s offer to see the burger place.
Kurt shows Blaine around. The city centre is very small compared to other big cities. Kurt jokes that the city centre is basically two large streets, divided by the river. Blaine would argue that there are at least four streets!
Of course there is much more to Ljubljana centre than those two or four streets, but it is indeed small.
Kurt shows him some of the more well-known places, like the Town Hall and the market place and of course the Dragon bridge. Ljubljana loves dragons.
They walk for hours and Blaine is parched.
“Can I buy you a drink?” he asks Kurt.
Kurt looks surprised.
“Oh?”
Blaine nods.
“As a thank you for the tour. It’s the least I can do.”
“Well, how can I refuse?”
They walk back to the Prešeren Square. There are a lot of cafes at the river on both sides. Kurt recommends Slovenska Hiša, so that’s where they’re heading.
Once they sit down and their drinks have arrived, they get to know each other some more. Blaine honestly didn’t expect to make a potential friend on his first full day in the country. He hadn’t really planned on it, since he’s here temporarily and for business, but he’s glad that Kurt decided to save his pizza. His actual life is back in Los Angeles, but it is nice to take a break from it. After all, that’s why he’s here.
Life in Los Angeles doesn’t stop, though.
It must be early morning in Los Angeles, because Quinn is awake and she’s calling.
“Oh, sorry about that,” Blaine shoots Kurt an apologetic look, “It’s my girlfriend.”
“Your girlfriend,” Kurt says quietly.
Blaine nods.
“Be right back.”

End notes: All the tips that Kurt gives were things that I learnt as a student living in Slovenia in 2020. I have no clue if all of it still applies (if, for example, some things have changed or some services no longer work the way they did), but aaaah nostalgia. I especially miss the Boni system. If you want to know more, here is a post with some Boni photo’s that I took while living there.

anyway here’s my favourite stanzas from France Prešeren’s famous Zdravljica (A Toast), whose seventh stanza was later used for our national anthem. This poem is actually the perfect represenattion of a slovene drinking night with friends, starting with an ode to wine, then going though all the stages of political discourse (nationalism -> panslavism -> global brotherhood of nations, as one does), ending with a drunk declaration of mutual love.
(1) The vintage, friends, is over, And here sweet wine makes, once again, Sad eyes and hearts recover, Puts fire into every vein. Drowns dull care Everywhere And summons hope out of despair.
(4) Let peace, glad conciliation, Come back to us throughout the land! Towards their destination Let Slavs henceforth go hand-in-hand! Thus again Will honour reign To justice pledged in our domain.
(7) God's blessing on all nations, Who long and work for that bright day, When o'er earth's habitations No war, no strife shall hold its sway; Who long to see That all men free No more shall foes, but neighbours be!
(8) At last to our reunion - To us the toast! Let it resound, Since in this gay communion By thoughts of brotherhood we're bound May joyful cheer Ne'er disappear From all good hearts now gathered here.

Happy Prešeren Day, Slovenia! On this date in 1849, Slovenia’s national poet, France Prešeren, died. One of the first Slovenes internationally recognized, Prešeren wrote epic poems, the foundations of a Slovene national canon, and one of his works, Zdravljica, was used for the libretto of the Slovene national anthem. Today is now celebrated as the Slovene Cultural Holiday in his honor.

Prešeren posts everywhere... so i thought, fuck it, I’ll make an exception and post something not-so-very-ski-jumping-related. So here’s my favourite Prešeren poem:
A Farewell to My Youth by F. Prešeren
O happier half of days decreed to me, My early years, so soon you passed away: Few were the flowers that blossomed on that tree, And they, scarce budded, fell into decay. Few were the rays of hope that I could see, And storms would often rage in wild array; Still, for my youth, dark though thy dawn may be, My heart will ever cry, God be with thee!
Too soon the fruits of knowledge did I eat! Where dripped their poison, faded all delight: I saw how honesty and truth could meet Among the human kind with scorn and spite. I sought true love - an empty dream and fleet, Which disappeared as dawn broke into light! And wisdom, justice and the learned mind Were dowerless maids - no suitors could they find.
I saw how those who are not loved by fate Their ship in vain against the wind may steer; The one who is not born to high estate Shall see no Fortune at his cradle appear; I saw how fame is purchased at the rate Of current cash - no price too high, too dear; I saw in glory's and in honour's seat All that beguiles men's minds with lies, deceit.
These sights and others uglier by far Burned in my heart till cruelly it bled; Yet thoughts like these the joys of youth will bar And quickly drive them out of heart and head; Fair cloud-born castles glimmer from afar, Green lawns arise where desert places spread, Hope kindles many a wanton, beckoning light, To lure the young and tempt them in the night.
They know not of the sudden storm that blows, Dispelling phantom shapes that cannot last, And all too soon forget misfortune's woes, Forget the wounds once they are healed and past - Until the changing years show how life flows Into a vessel that is leaking fast. Still, O my youth, dark though thy dawn may be, My heart will ever cry, God be with thee!
Many Slovenian ski jumpers did attend the Gimnazija Franceta Prešerna high school..so there’s that at least.
Also who doesn’t know Zdravljica by now...

Hi, I'm an Asian with very little background of Slovenian politics - could you please help me understand the situation on the ground and how's it come about?
Hi! I'm not the best with politics but I'll try my best
I'll first do a run through and then I'll put in bold what's happening right now but before I start, the main thing right now is that they want to shut down independent media
Just putting this first because it's the most important, okay now for the run through
Pretty much our former prime minister, Marjan Šarec resigned and so Janez Janša was elected by the National assembly in March, which is also when the coronavirus outbreak started in Slovenia. Now a lot of shit went on while we were in lockdown and I honestly can't tell you much about that because I wasn't really following politics at the time, but there was a thing with ordering unsuitable masks and respirators and also during the whole corona crisis, they tried to pass laws completely unrelated to the epidemic (because they knew all media attention was on the virus). Janez Janša and his political party (SDS) are also very right wing and corrupt (Janša actually went to jail for corruption a few years back)(he's also good friends with Orban, the Hungarian prime minister and I think he [Janša] owes him [Orban] some money?) and there were just a lot of allegations of corruption flying around during that time as well as bribing other parties into teaming up SDS to form the government (members of the parties who connected with SDS got promotions and raises). The government also gave themselves the highest paycheck possible, but they offered very little financial support to small businesses during the lockdown (as far as I know, the only thing small businesses got was that they can pay their taxes with a delay or something?). They also passed an amendment against the conservation of nature, but thankfully that's been put on hold by the constitutional court.
That was lockdown and the protests started in early April with people banging their pots and pans on the balcony. In late April, the bike protests started. So every Friday, people would ride their bikes on the streets around the parliament. There was a lot of shit with the police at the beginning, putting up fences on our protesting space for no good reason and writing people up or arresting them for BS. At this point I'd like to say that the protesters have never gotten violent. The most "violent" thing they did was throw massive paper airplanes across the fence.
But I feel like shit really hit the fan on the 24th of June. For context, 25th of June is Slovenian independence day.
So Slovenian Antifa organized an anti celebration on Prešeren square in Ljubljana (Slovenian capital) on the 24th, as to say "we don't support this government and what it's doing to our country". That's when the Nazis roll in. They saw what the antifa was trying to do and they said "okay, we'll go to Prešeren square as well as to show our support to the government". There were about 50 of them and they were all wearing neon yellow vests (no correlation with the Yellow Vests movement in France btw - they just stole their symbolism). Some (I think 11) of those "Yellow Vests" had Nazi tattoos and some of them were identified by other people as active members of the Slovenian neonazi group called Blood&Honour.
On the 24th, the police also put fences around half of Ljubljana city centre. People couldn't get to their homes, cars, bikes because the police wouldn't let them through... They [the police] did that so that the government officials could have their own private independence day celebration (on the Congress square which is about 200m from Prešeren square) without having to listen or look at the protesters.
After that, the nazis came to three more protests before deciding to "leave us alone" by mixing into our crowd (their words not mine), taking pictures of us and trying to expose us on their twitter account (@/RJopici). They call this "yellow monitoring" and they said they specifically target middle aged people employed in the public sector, NGOs and or on RTV (RTV is radio television Slovenia basically like the BBC)
What's happening right now
Janša is pushing to shut down RTV (the biggest independent media house in Slovenia). He says it's a leech to the Slovenian budget and not even necessary (because most of his voters watch Nova 24 TV anyway which is Janša's TV company and it's basically like the Fox news). Shutting down independent media is simply unacceptable. Hungary and Serbia already shut down most (if not all?) independent media and idk about Poland? But Janša looks up to those countries and wants Slovenia to be like them. So yeah, Janša and SDS are pushing to shut RTV down entirely or at least cut its funding. This on it's own is a bad thing, but it's really put in perspective when you see just how shitty and biased the reporting of politically owned media like Nova 24 or Planet TV is. They lie and turn everything around to cater to their agenda.
The other thing that's happening is we have an increased number of corona cases. We were down to only 6 active cases so the borders opened and a lot of Slovenians went to Croatia (which is a popular tourist destination for like most of Slovenians). So people brought in new cases from abroad and as of 25.7. we have 241 active cases (which isn't a lot compared to other countries but we are pretty small). Despite that, the government still doesn't want to shut down the borders again or at least put Croatia on the red list because putting Croatia on the red list would mean people returning from there would have to go into a two week self isolation period and that would mean people would be discouraged to travel to Croatia, obviously. But I'm pretty sure our government gets a share of the money Croatia makes from Slovenian tourists, which is why they don't want to restrict travel to Croatia just yet. Probably once the tourist season is over, they will restrict travel immediately.
Instead Nova 24 TV is blaming the protesters for the rise of infection numbers, which isn't true. If the new infections were in fact caused by the protesters, then Ljubljana would be the epicenter of the epidemic (since that's where the biggest protests are), but as of right now, Hrastnik is actually the epicenter and Hrastnik is in a whole different region than Ljubljana.
There's also now talk about stepping away from the Istanbul convention (just like Poland did) - but right now it's just some of the right wing politicians tweeting about it. As far as I know, Janša's government is also looking to privatize healthcare (rn we have free public healthcare). Obviously they won't do that in the middle of the epidemic, but it's one of their interests.
That's not even counting all the racists, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic and misogynistic comments our politicians make on twitter daily.
Oh and if you're wondering where our president (Borut Pahor) is amidst all of this, he's posting selfies on Instagram and refusing to acknowledge the situation at all.
TLDR: our government is corrupt and wants to shut down independent media and just all in all make our country more like Poland or Hungary and people aren't happy with that
If anyone is from Slovenia, feel free to fill this in if I've missed anything or got anything wrong
#sorry this is so long!#and sorry if it's too vauge or too specific in certain areas i just really can't keep up with it all?#every week there's another bullshit going on#last week our minister of justice (Lilijana Kozlovič) went out and publicly blamed rape on the victims for example#today is Monday and already we have one deeply racist and transphobic tweet by one of the other politicians#i knew a lot about the amendment against the conservation of nature because that's my area#but THANK FUCK the constitutional court still has some brain cells left so they put a stop to this madness#ALSO i know that in regards of politics elsewhere (khm the USA khm) this seems mild#or like that pirates of the Caribbean meme that's like 'first time?'#but yeah I for one do not want my country to go to shit#also sorry it took nearly a whole day to answer#it was a lot to type#politics#personal#ask#anon#not positivity#long post
