part 1
part 1.5
"So...where are we going?"
"It's a clearing. In the woods." Ellie's hands lazily slide around the steering wheel as she speaks. You could daydream while staring at Ellie for hours. It's relaxing to watch her drive.
"Hm. Are you gonna...kill me there? Or something?" You joke.
"Still deciding."
"Oh my—are you seriously still mad?"
She says nothing, pretending to be engaged with driving.
You let out an irked breath.
"Okay—Ellie, I'm sorry. I was wasted out of my mind. And you look really different. Like, not just in your face. Everywhere is different." You confess, fiddling with the stickers peeling off of her dashboard.
"So do you. I still managed to fuckin' figure it out."
"I—I think I almost did? I remember looking at you and feeling really—confused, mostly. I didn't understand why I liked this stranger so much." You say, vaguely remembering how clingy and overt you acted last night.
"You were confused? I was fucking confused," her head swivels to yours. "a lesbian? That's what you are now?"
"Don't—don't say it like that. I came out like everyone else. You just weren't there to hear it."
Ellie lets out a choked laugh.
"Oh, Bullshit."
"Excuse me?"
"I wrote you and called you for fucking months. Nothing. A letter a fucking day. Are you listening? Do you know how many letters that is?"
You stay silent. Your hands ball up where they rest on your lap.
"Fuckin' say something! I even asked Dina for your number but you cut her off too! Is there a reason you basically fucking died?"
"I wasn't home, Ellie."
She stills, her shoulders relaxing a touch. She adjusts back towards the road before clearing her throat.
"At...at sixteen? What happened?"
You recall you, sixteen, sobbing and frantic. Tearing apart the letter Ellie wrote to tell you that she left. Wondering why it felt more like a breakup then your actual one did. Cursing yourself over and over and over again for only being sixteen. Your parents cursing Ellie for corrupting you.
"I feel like you can connect the dots." Your voice is just barely loud enough to hear over the droning tone of the car. The only focus you had at this point was trying not to cry in front of Ellie.
"Oh, fuck, y/n. I'm—I'm sorry. Did those fuckers kick you out?"
"No," you sigh. "I just knew I had leave. They're...crazy. I don't know. I'm fine now."
Her knuckles flex and tense over the steering wheel. Her teeth start to bite at her lips. There's a couple more seconds of quiet before she speaks up.
"I wish I would've been there."
You pause, not totally expecting what she said.
"Yeah," you breathe, gazing at the side of her head. "I wished that too."
And that wasn't a lie. Your family instilled a lot on you, mostly turning you away from religion. But then? You were desperate. Painfully, achingly desperate. And completely alone. After you left home, you prayed every single night. A genuine prayer, on your knees and everything. You even bought a $1.50 pocket bible from goodwill. All to aide in your bedtime routine of begging God to make Ellie come back.
She never did. You've been an atheist ever since. You weren't sure if her being here now changed anything.
The silence marinates for a short while longer until you feel the rocky texture of a gravel road beneath the car.
"We're here," Ellie states, throwing the gear in park. She takes a glance at your feet. "and you should've worn better shoes. We have walking to do."
You both hop out of the car.
"Like you couldn't have told me before we left?" You scoff.
"It's more fun to fuck with you later. C'mon," she grabs your hand, tightly clutching it in hers. "there's coyotes and shit around here. Don't be fuckin' stupid and stay close."
You try to will the warmth away from your cheeks. You've never held Ellie's hand before. Even if this doesn't really count as holding.
"Yeah, got it." You force out.
She leads you into the trees, hand warmly on yours, briskly following a mental path she's clearly walked many times.
"I almost got arrested over here," She sighs, far too casually.
"What?!"
"Damn—I said almost, chill." She assures, laughing at your shock.
You lightly slap her shoulder.
"I don't care! Almost getting arrested is still crazy!" You chide, eyes wide and judgmental.
Ellie's always been pretty...rebellious, but a part of you always thought that she'd be smart enough to avoid anything truly consequential. I guess she still is, you think.
"Lemme explain, ok. I was high as fuck, minding my business, when I saw some kids shootin'—a wolf, I think? Maybe a coyote—I saw them just...fuckin' up this poor thing with a—a BB gun."
"Oh my god..." You say, "What did you do?"
"I didn't do shit at first—I thought they'd stop. But they were like—about to kill this thing, I swear to God. So, I...ha..." Her face breaks into a wide smile. "you're not gonna like this,"
"...What. Not gonna like what."
"I pulled my gun on 'em."
"Ellie!"
"It wasn't even loaded, y'know I like to have it with me just in case..."
"They're kids!—"
"Asshole kids. Ok? And it fuckin' worked so—"
"I thought you said you almost got arrested?"
"Jesus—I did. You keep interrupting me—"
"Sorry." You quip, also realizing you just interrupted her with your apology.
"It's—it's fine. Anyway, those fucks called the cops on me after they ran. I found out cause the fuckin' pigs stopped me and asked if I'd seen an 'armed gunman in the area,'" She says, imitating a deep 'cop' voice. "dumbasses had no clue it was me."
You watch as she laughs, amused at her own story. Suddenly, your foot gets caught under a thick root and your arms fly out in an instant.
Ellie's hands hit your shoulders, grasping them upright, causing you to sharply crash into her chest.
"Oh—shit, sorry. I wasn't watching where I was going." You gasp out, trying to regain your balance while loosening your grip on Ellie's coat.
"No, it's those fuckin' shoes," she rebukes, hands still resting on your shoulders. She immediately takes them off you when she notices. "we're almost there anyway. Try not to kill yourself before then."
Your hand burns at your side, palm itching. Is she going to grab it again?
"Where's 'there'?" You ask, glancing around at the wall of trees and shrubbery encircling you both.
"You'll see. Just stay close." She repeats like before, clutching your hand once again.
You tighten your grip, wanting to show Ellie you're listening.
"Good. Let's move."
The two of you walk for about a mile or so more, before the view steals your eyes and you both freeze.
"Oh—wow, Ellie. This is really pretty," you breathe, entranced by the piercingly vibrant colors and towering mountainous structures.
Her head is turned toward you, taking in your reaction to the sight, instead of the sight itself.
She's must've seen it so many times, you think.
"Yeah, you like it? I knew you would." She tells you, unable to keep the satisfied grin from her face.
"Shut up. I'm still mad you didn't even let me get ready this morning."
"There's nobody here. Who're you fuckin' getting ready for?" She barks, arms wide and gesturing.
I still wanted to get ready for you, Ellie. But obviously you don't say that.
"Whatever. You just did it to be a dick." You mutter, plopping yourself down onto the boulder in front of you.
"Yeah, I did. It's funny when you're mad. You're like a cat." She laughs, sitting down next to you.
"That's toxic. You shouldn't make people mad just cause you find it funny." You chide, crossing your legs over the rock.
"Guess I'm toxic, then." She sighs, carelessly throwing pebbles at your head.
"Was that the plan? Sit on a rock and be mean to me?"
"Truly adorable that you think this is mean—"
"Well it's not nice, that's for sure." You huff.
Ellie shifts so that her body faces yours. Her legs spread out wide, elbows comfortably resting on her thighs.
"I don't think you want me to be nice to you."
Your mouth parts open in surprise, eyes now burning into Ellie's.
"Well that's a lie. I'd love for you to be nice—"
"I think you like when I'm mean to you. I think you...prefer it, actually." She juts, a confident smile forming.
"Yeah, and who told you that, Dina?" You question, crossing your arms as a breeze starts to make you shiver.
"Nobody told me anything." her head quirks to the side. "I can just tell."
It was difficult to keep your composure. There were some things Ellie seemed to know about you that you didn't even know yourself. It was terrifying, embarrassing, and flattering all at once. Your face feels like its melting. You stay silent.
"Oh—am I right? I've totally got you, haven't I?" She asks, enjoying fully the power she seems to have over you and your emotions.
"No." You bite, unwilling to try and say anything else.
You hated how often Ellie was right.
She takes a ball of black fabric from her pocket, tossing it in your lap. It's a hat.
"Put it on. It's cold."
A swarm of bats fly over the both of you, chaotic and eruptive.
"It's gonna be dark, Ellie."
"I know, I know. I was, uh—saving the best for last." She quips, hopping off of the rock to stand in front of you.
It felt kind of awkward this way, Ellie fully standing while you sat. You had to look straight up to meet her eyes. It put your head in whirl.
"What, the tattoo? I saw that already."
"No. Something else," She grabs your hand and places it on the bottom hem of her top. Your heart beats a little faster.
"Lift up my shirt."
Your eyes widen as your hand fidgets. You wait for her to keep talking. She doesn't.
"Um...like all the way?" You struggle to find words. "Or—"
"Lift up," her hand grasps yours, guiding it up. "my shirt."
Fabric shifts and the pale flesh of her abdomen comes into view. Her belly is lean—all hard edges and dense muscle. What catches your eye is the long, winding, angry scar tracing along her hip.
Your brain goes into overdrive.
Traumatic injury, surgery needed... most likely...flexor or... IT band tendonitis? Maybe, what, Bursitis? Something...invasive—a tear? Labral tear? Iliopsoas tear? What the fuck was she doing?
"Street fighting." She states. "It's my job."
Your face is blank. You shakily stand.
"Uhhh—you, you better be fucking with me, Ellie." You stutter out. Unconsciously, you move to trace your finger along the scar, feeling the warped, healed skin. "I mean this is...this is serious. This is...surgery."
"Don't I fuckin' know it," she moves her shirt back down, covering the scar. "took me out of the ring for like, eight weeks."
"Jesus—Jesus Christ. How long have you been doing this!?"
"Not much longer than you've been in school, really."
"So, not long. Is what you're saying." your fingers rake through your hair. "This is...this is fucking crazy."
"It's not that—"
"Dina's okay with this? Really. I really don't see how she could be okay with this, like, at all." You argue, cutting her off.
"She wasn't. I had to convince her."
"And how often do you go to the doctor? Once a week? Or do you pretend like you know how to patch yourself up?"
Her face slightly reddens.
"I—I learned how to do it myself. I know how."
"Oh sure. Did you google it? I'm sure google will save you from a life threatening injury."
"Ok, most of them are not 'life threatening'—"
"You don't know that! Not certainly, at least! Not certain enough to be safe!" You exclaim, voice full of anger, but mostly, fear.
She places a hand on your shoulder, gripping it tightly. She doesn't talk until you meet her eyes.
"Hey. I am fine. The hip thing was a fluke. Honest. Most of the time nothing fuckin' happens." She assures, her other hand rubbing up and down your arm. You must've looked more upset than you'd realized.
"Ok."
"Just, 'ok'? Are we...good now?" Ellie asks, blue eyes still deeply connected to yours.
"Um...yeah..." You say, partly hesitating. Ellie watches you closely.
"I wanna go with you."
Her face lights up in...shock?, you think, a pleased grin shaping her mouth.
"What—really?"
"If you really want to do...this," you bite your lip. "being there is what would make me feel...better...about it."
"Yeah? That's...I mean, I think that's great," She says, tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear. "my own cheerleader."
You step backwards, letting Ellie's hands slide away from your body.
"No, not a cheerleader. A fucking medic. So I'm not sitting home worried about you—dying. I can just be there to help if stuff goes wrong."
"I'm happy either way, princess." She gleams.
As the sun sets, it gets harder to make out the shape of her face. The woods are also quieter, amplifying the subtle sounds of you and Ellie. You wonder about the details of your plan.
"Do I have to pay to get in? How does this...work?"
"No, you're set. Pretty girls get in free—it's a club rule. Y'know, good for business and everything."
You thank the sky for it's darkness, as Ellie is unable to see the rosy hue reaching your cheeks.
"Oh. Okay...good to know."
Ellie steps up, and now familiarly, encloses your hand in hers.
"C'mon. It's too fuckin' dark to stay any longer."
You walk out of the clearing, back into the dense foliage of where you came. Your grip tightens.
"So...have you had girlfriend?" Ellie blurts.
"Um, weird question, but," you look away. "no."
"Just...trying to gauge how good of a lesbian you are. Pretty bad, it seems."
"Oh, fuck off. I've been focusing on...school." You retort, fully knowing how lame it sounds.
If you were being honest, it was just nerves. You didn't have to try for a boyfriend, he basically wouldn't even take 'no' for an answer. But with girls? It was like you froze.
"Hey I'd give you some tips but...I don't think they'd really...apply for you, y'know?"
"No, I don't know. Explain it." You demand.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm trying think of a way where it makes...sense. And won't make you mad."
"I won't get mad Ellie. Just say it." You encourage, now more curious than anything.
She stops walking and turns to you.
"Well, it's like...the roles. The roles you can have."
"What...roles...?"
She huffs a laugh before continuing, and positions her hand to point to herself.
"I'm the type that flusters the girl. The...fluster-er, right?"
She walks forwards, getting so close that you can smell the scents of the forest soaked up in her clothing.
"And you," She says, her finger poking your collarbone. "...are the girl that...is flustered. It's a...a dynamic, yeah?"
Your skin heats and all you can do is gaze at Ellie, who's completely enthused with this discussion. She stays quiet, watching your face intently, despite it being so dark.
"You're making stuff up again. I don't even—I don't even know why I let you talk." You utter.
"See? You're doing it already! It's the fuckin' dynamic princess—you know I'm never wrong." She gushes, pinching at your checks and making them even redder.
"This so stupid. And don't call me that."
It was like the world stopped. As soon as you said it, you could see Ellie's brain distinctly remembering you, in that whiny drunken voice, begging. You won't ever forget it. And neither will Ellie, for completely different reasons.
You knew exactly what she was going to say, so you try and stop her.
"Don't. I don't care what I did yesterday. Just—don't."
She sighs, clearly dropping it. Thank god. Her teeth bite the inside of her cheek.
"Whatever you say, princess."
You don't even acknowledge it, just rolling your eyes as you walk ahead. Stray branches brush over your legs and thighs, feeling like gentle scratches. You slow a bit, waiting for Ellie to join you.
And hold your hand again.
Stepping ahead of you to lead, Ellie does just that. The warmth makes you smile, and you let it own your face, bright and wide. You didn't care. It was dark enough.
"Alright. Stay close."
"I know, Ellie."

She really couldn't be bothered for a night out clubbing tonight. If you asked her a couple of years ago then she'd be up for it any day of the week, but now, she much preferred a cosy night indoors, wallowing about not knowing what to do with her life over a warm hot chocolate.
Well, she could do without the wallowing, but that was besides the point. Forced to go out clubbing with her friends, she was not designated driver, for none of them drove there, but she was designated responsible adult. She didn't know what she preferred more, drinking so she actually enjoyed herself, or not having to feel sick the next morning.
The bassy music was loud, and regretfully, she and her friends had only been there for about half an hour now. She knew this because she checked her phone.
"Y/N, outside!" her friends shouted over the music to her, all of them holding hands and connecting a chain to make it outside to the smoking area.
Ah, a moment of peace. A break for the ears.
Y/N rustled through her handbag for a cigarette before cursing when she realised she didn't have a lighter.
"Shit!" she huffed, rolling her eyes and leaning back against the wall, before her prayers were answered and a handsome guy stood in front of her with exactly what she needed.
"Need a light?" the guy smirked at her frustrated expression before offering her his lighter, curiously decorated with cat stickers.
"You're a Saint," Y/N exaggerated, gratefully taking the object and lighting her cigarette.
"Far from it, I'm Minho," he introduced himself, laughing lightly as the girl in front took a relieved sigh after a puff.
"I don't know I think I've seen that name in the bible somewhere," Y/N joked, happy to be talking to someone sober even if she was exhausted.
"Yeah, yeah," Minho laughed, "what's brought you out tonight then? Normally all the girls here end up off their faces hammered."
"You'd have to at a place like this. 'HooBAEs' is an awful name and an even more awful place," Y/N scrunched her nose whilst nodding back at the dodgy neon light. "Only good thing about it is the cheap drinks."
"Not taking advantage of them tonight then?" Minho quirked a brow, joining her in leaning against the wall as he smoked from his own cigarette, tilting his head back to look at her.
"Nah, I'm DRA. Designated Responsible Adult," Y/N sighed, looking over at her friend's who were drunkenly giggling and mingling with a group of boys that seemed their age.
"Tell me about it, I'm on NONSS duty. No one night stand shenanigans," Minho laughed, following where her eyes were looking.
They must be his friends.
"Awfully specific," Y/N commented.
"Very," Minho took another drag of his cigarette before stubbing it out. "I'm bored, wanna ditch this place and-"
"Oh I'm not looking for that tonight. You're very nice but-" Y/N blushed, looking away from Minho.
"Woah, woah, hold your horses, you didn't let me finish. You do flatter yourself," he chuckled before standing on front of her, "what about we leave babysitting duty for tonight and find somewhere else to chat?"
"Hmmm, ok," Y/N shrugged and nodded, watching her intoxicated friends stumble back inside to the chamber of doom. Ok, maybe that was an exaggeration but it really was the last place she wanted to be right now.
They walked for five minutes, peacefully taking in the night time air as Minho led them to a bench that overlooked the town.
"Wow, it's so peaceful," she glanced across at the little lights that lined the buildings.
"Better than that bar, right?" Minho nodded, taking a seat on the bench and patting the space next to him for Y/N to sit down.
"Want another?" Y/N passed a cigarette to Minho and they both proceeded to light them and sit in the quiet night air. "You know, I've never felt so calm before, it's so relaxing here."
"I come here all the time. It's a good place to think," Minho said as he stared out at the stars. He'd never felt so comfortable around a stranger but some reason he felt compelled to talk to Y/N.
"What do you like to think about?" Y/N leant back in the bench, tilting her head to the right to look at Minho.
"I try to think about what I wanna do in life," Minho sighed, "my parents wanted me to become a lawyer."
"Oh, booo, well, some like it but I couldn't," Y/N shook her head, "my parents wanted me to become a doctor, but all I wanna do is work with cats," she took another drag from her cigarette.
"I love cats too," Minho said, flicking the flame on his lighter on and off.
"Couldn't tell," Y/N laughed sarcastically looking at the cat stickers on the item.
Minho giggled shyly to himself as he rubbed his thumb across the stickers of his cats. The two them ended up chatting til sunrise basking in each other's company.
"Here, give me your phone," Y/N bravely and uncharacteristically spoke up, taking Minho's phone as he gave it to her with a raised eyebrow, leant back in the bench with his arms folded behind his head.
"Oh, you've got a text from 'Quokka' and it very drunkenly says... Hyung, where are you, Prince is off the rails," Y/N handed his phone back to him after putting her phone number in on it.
"Oh shit," Minho's eyes widened.
"Oh shit indeed, I swear Prince was dead, although that could just be your drunk Quokka friend-"
"We better get back, come on," Minho hurried her as they headed back to the bar, and when they got back, they saw all their friends stumbling out of the club.
"Hyungggg!" a guy waved Minho over.
"Y/Nnie!!!" her friends cheered her over.
"Where's Hyunjin?"
"Where's Minji?"
"Oh they went to f-"
"They left early."
"Come on, let's get you home," Minho grabbed who Y/N assumed was his Quokka friend by the arm.
"I better get you both home," Y/N sighs and gets her two friends to start walking with her.
"I'll text you!" Minho calls over his shoulder with a smirk, knowing full well that Y/N had put her number in his phone.
Y/N turned around with a shy smile, waving as Minho got his friend into a taxi as she did the same thing. They had met by chances but hopefully things would go somewhere, who knew she'd meet someone and like them instantly. Perhaps it was worth it coming out that night.

Jesus has to be the center, the heart and soul and fire of your faith. It's not about the superficial things, like which Bible you use or which cross necklace you wear - but let your joy in Christ touch every aspect of your life. Buy a bunch of backpack pins off Etsy that display your faith, like a lion or a "biblically accurate angel" or a dove or a cross, and pin them on your Bible bag to wear when you go to church. Write in your prayer journal using pink glitter gel pen. Journal in your Bible to your heart's content with pens and highlighters and faith-based stickers. Turn up Christian radio on your way to work and sing out loud. And speaking of music - take time to explore new Christian music when you find the time! Your favorite band or rapper or pop artist is out there.
Let Christ permeate everything. You know what I mean?

!! DISCLAIMER; if you want to read his backstory: there is a slightly gory scene, and mentions of bullying. just a warning! !!
BACKSTORY:
Childhood.
Jackson Underwood, born September 21s of 1972, grew up in an extremely close minded and religious town outside of Texas. Everyone knew each other, the town was fairly small, and everyone was raised strictly Catholic. Prayer before meals, church every Sunday, dress modest, no curse words, no ‘sinful’ acts. Due to how underdeveloped his town was, there were barely any doctors and no hospitals, his family sent him to school in a nearby town. There, the kids were brutal. They'd bully him because of his frail stature, or because of his social anxiety and shyness, and sometimes just for how innocent he was. They'd make several disturbing jokes around him, then laugh when he didn't understand and asked what it meant. At around 13, the bullying got physical. It started small, with pushes when his bullies past him, or giving him noogies. This could all be passed as friendly, and for a while, Jack thought he had gotten friends, but no. At 14, the bullying had evolved into assault, and he would often be covered in bruises and scratches, which he would hide with clothes. Only his younger sister, Madeline, could understand him, and she sometimes helped him patch up, placing pink stickers on his scratches like they're bandages. It didn't help, but it made Jack's mood lift up just a bit.
Anxiety.
With the bullying becoming severe now, Jack started experiencing worse cases of anxiety. That included deep dread when tasked with going outside or to socialize, and he would usually lock himself in his room. More importantly, he started experiencing panic attacks and, although rarely, seizures due to how amount of stress, and his blood pressure shot up as well. Due to how close minded his parents were, their minds immediately went to demonic possession. They believed the seizing, the fact that Jack locked himself in his room all day, and his panic attacks, were all from a demon. Thus, instead of getting him to a doctor, they dragged him to the local church, to get an exorcism.
Exorcism / Evocation.
Jack is brought to the local church, where the priest is waiting. A middle aged man with gray hair and a grumpy expression on his face, William Rosswood. Jack never liked him. His parents speak to the priest, explaining the seizures and his isolation, and how scared they are that their poor boy is possessed by an evil demon. Jack stayed silent with his head down the entire town. The priest nods along, and eventually brings him back to the exorcism area. Jack is layed down on a bed in the middle and tied, without much reaction. He just watches William, as he gets out the Bible. He listens to a prayer, and doesn't feel anything. This continues on, with William trying numerous ways to get rid of a demon that didn't even exist. His last attempt however, was different. He used a different book, not the Bible, but something similar. The priest then reads a verse in latin, and Jack immediately starts feeling nauseous. After a few moments, he feels sick, like his body is being drained of it's blood. He looks up at the priest, wondering what is going on. William looks at him and his expression turns into shock, and he steps back. He starts yelling about demons and God, but Jack could barely hear anything, or focus. Finally, he loses control of his body and passes out.
Aftermath.
Jack wakes up some time later, not sure how long. What he sees when he wakes up immediately makes him feel sick again. It's a bloody scene, with the priest laying against the wall, pretty obviously dead. The floor and walls were also splattered with blood. Jack takes a step towards William, noticing that he looked torn up, and some of his guts were hanging out, like an animal had ravaged him. Jack immediately covered his mouth so as to not throw up, which is when he noticed his hand was covered in blood. The wheels turn in his mind, and he connects it all together. He killed the priest, William Rosswood, and ate some of his organs. How? He couldn't figure out yet. He just blacked out… and woke up to this. In a panic, and on the verge of a panic attack, he fleds the scene, jumping out of a church window and running off into the forest. He runs as fast as he can, and finally collapses from exhaustion near a lake.
The Truth.
When Jack finally wakes up, the sun is just about to rise. The sky was still a gloomy gray and faint blue, and his body felt sore all over. His eyes landed on the lake near him, and crawled over to the lake. His hands started looking like claws, and his nails were too long for a human. When he finally reaches the edge, he scoops up the lake water and drinks. He sighs in content, but his peace is quickly ruined by the sight of his reflection in the water. His irises were unnaturally big, almost taking up his entire eye. His veins were visible, all over his face and neck area. He looked sick, and he didn't know what happened on how to fix it
(okay i'm going to be honest, i don't want to write a lot cause no one has the patience to read it lol, but basically he's possessed by a demon by the name of Dirus, who basically feeds off of fear and stress. he (the demon) makes Jack eat organs, both human and animal, mostly to make Jack feel sick and afraid, and just for his own enjoyment. also Dirus talks to Jack with auditory and optical illusions.)

How to you make your quiet time of Bible reading cozy and etc.? I’m curious how you get creative and tailor it to you. Thank you!
I make my quiet time cozy by setting up a cozy atmosphere. Putting on an asmr room like a fireplace on youtube, making myself a yummie coffee or tea, putting on a cozy oversized sweater, lighting a candle. I use my favorite fuzzy blanket, I listen to my favorite worship music, get some snacks or eat breakfast while I sing. I bought a bible I love, I bought christian stickers for my prayer journal, writing down my prayers with pretty stationery I love, it feels creative and fun. I try to use every idea I have of how I would feel cozy and happy and use that for my quiet time. And all this makes it so enjoyable, so intentional and beautiful. After my quiet time I feel happy, connected, loved, like I recharged and refreshed my mind. Time with God is the best. ♡

Bengiyo's Queer Cinema Syllabus
For those who are not aware, I have decided to run the gauntlet of @bengiyo’s Queer Cinema Syllabus and have officially started Unit 3: Faith and Religion. The films in Unit 3 are: But I’m a Cheerleader (2000), Prayers for Bobby (2009), Latter Days (2003), Blackbird (2014), The Wise Kids (2011), Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party (2015)
Today I will be writing about
The Wise Kids (2011) dir. Stephen Cone
Tumblr media
[Run Time: 1:35, Available on: Amazon Prime, Lang: English]
Summary: “A vivid, dynamic Southern coming-of-age drama, takes place in the transitional space between high school and college, when life seems to be all questions and no answers, and the future is scarily wide open. Set in and around a Charleston, SC Baptist church, weaving through this ensemble piece are three main characters - Brea, an introspective pastor's daughter experiencing debilitating doubt, the hyperactive Laura, Brea's best friend and a devout believer, and Tim, the open-hearted son of a single father, confronting his homosexuality for the first time. Tensions and buried feelings abound, as colleges are chosen and adults behave badly, as Brea, Laura and Tim attempt to hang onto what they have, all the while yearning to break free.” (from IMDB)
Cast: *Molly Kunz as Brea *Eric Hulsebos as Ryan *Tyler Ross as Tim
__
Cast: *Molly Kunz as Brea *Eric Hulsebos as Ryan *Tyler Ross as Tim
Tumblr media
This film does feel very Southern, from the outfits, to the South Carolina state flag sticker on the back of the car, to the way everybody interacts with each other. And that was nice, because it felt familiar. I did not grow up religious, but I did grow up culturally Southern and spent a large portion of my life in small towns in the South. Which means, going in to this film, I understood not fundamentally and completely, but to some extent the pressures that come from being raised in a small Southern town when you don't fit the mold. I remember talking with family about that, about the way they felt they had to believe in Jesus or say they did and act in certain ways in order to survive their towns.
Tumblr media
So I sympathize with Brea’s struggle to come to terms with her own relationship to God. That it gets harder and harder for her to hide her own doubt, and that she is the one person who really remains consistent, non-judgemental friends with Tim, and seems to be the first person that he went to when he realized he might be gay. And I loved all the subtle acting choices that the kids did to show who had knowledge about other characters and who didn’t.
Tumblr media
I think Laura needs a therapist and is concerningly obsessed with God, but I did really love and find it interesting how worried she was that anyone would think she was stupid. And I thought that was intriguing in juxtaposition to the pastor’s wife who Brea talks to about doubt, and who ultimately tells Brea not to think too hard about faith. I don’t think we get any explicit commentary from Laura about it, but I think she is toeing the same line Brea did. Laura sees the Bible as fact, and panics when people start to question those facts, Brea started to question and it lead her away from God. I think Laura is scared of where she’d land if she started questioning the foundation upon which her entire life has been built.
Tumblr media
And Tim is really interesting to me because I never really see him struggle with faith. Which is a fascinating choice for a film that covers some intersections of queerness and religion. At the end of the day, it is Laura who struggles the most out of all characters with Tim’s queerness. It is Laura that has a hard time reconciling what the Bible says with how comfortable Tim is both thinking he is gay, and remaining a Christian. I loved that Tim’s dad seemed to know for at least some time that Tim was queer, and while awkward is generally accepting. I guess I was surprised at how little film really seemed to go in to Tim’s own thoughts and feelings around rejection by friends and family. And that it is the adult gay man that really seems to be struggling more with reconciling his own faith and current life with the queerness he is not really able to hide.
I think The Wise Kids did a really great job at showing a so many different types of people and their beliefs. I thought it was very realistic and relevant that Tim and Brea, the gay boy and the doubter, end up going to college in New York and getting out of the small town, super religious, Southern community structure that I think would eat them alive overtime if they stayed.
Tumblr media
And I did really love the last shot of the film being a recreation of the manger scene as the kids put on the Nativity play, where Laura is Mary is Tim is an angel. I see as a very strong and intentional metaphor around Laura continuing to uphold the traditional views of religion and God. But that Tim, though he is queer, will still be permitted in to heaven, as he sits above the manger.
For/By/About
Tumblr media
This feels like a by and about film. I don’t know that they really center queerness in this story to the degree that I would consider it for queer people.
Favorite Moment
Tim’s dad asking him if he had met any boys in New York. I love how awkward the whole conversation is and how Tim’s dad does appear to be in a bit over his head and slightly uncomfortable with asking. Like, he can’t really even say boys or boyfriend or anything, but he loves his kids (“I have my kids” is another one of my favorite lines in the film) and he’s being as supportive as he can be. I can imagine what Tim’s life will be like in a few years, if he gets a boyfriend and brings him home to meet the family, and I see things maybe being awkward at first, but ending with warmth and that Southern hospitality.
Favorite Quote
Is actually not a quote at all, it is the deafening silence of Brea in response to Austin’s wife saying that God is bigger than her questions. That silence spoke volumes to Brea’s reaction to essentially being told that the solution to her crisis of faith was to stop thinking about it.
Score
8/10
I don’t know exactly why, but this film really struggled to hold my attention. I think part of it is because it was focused on three separate kids, they ended up doing a little bit of everything rather than a lotta bit of one thing, and I have a tendency to prefer stories that are able to dig a little deeper.

I keep seeing bumper stickers saying "Save America, Pray the Rosary". So it got me remembering all the times at catholic school we had to circle together around the statue of "Mary" and chant....I mean recite the rosary. But Catholics try to say they don't worship Mary, I was one...yes they do.
The worship and praying to Mary is completely unbiblical. No where does it say to do it. Scripture specifies that once dead, your spirit goes either to heaven, or to hell. There aren't spirits of dead loved ones visiting family members, those are demons. But the catholic church ignores this. Not only that, they double down and instituted the vain repetitional prayer of the rosary. In making this post I had become reminded of a lot of things. Things that would have made this post a pretty big one if I tried to include it all, so I will just put a link in so you can see for yourself what the catholic church says.
Here is a breakdown of the rosary to anyone who doesn't know.
Tumblr media
Matthew 6:5-7 KJV
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Jesus says not to pray vain repetitions, the catholic church says pray in this order. Just after those verses above in Matthew, Jesus gives the Lord Prayer as an example how to pray. Now there is nothing wrong with praying that prayer, especially if you are just starting out. But know the words and understand what you are saying. It's a pretty awesome prayer, but turning it into a chant makes it of no effect. God does not want that. But here is some more....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This!!!!!👆 this is straight ritual. This is Talmudic. It is unbiblical, a man made doctrine, and pure vain worship. And this....👇, is not only unbiblical, it is blasphemous. Again, the dead, are dead. Absolutley NOWHERE is Mary given any authority to fulfill promises, no where did God include her in the Godhead, and never did he promise to send her as a messenger of any kind back to mankind.
Tumblr media
So again I say, study your Bible. In it you will realize a very important thing. God wants a relationship with you, the individual person. His words will tell you what he wants and how to be in that relationship. If you knock, he will open (Matthew 7:7 KJV). Together, with Jesus as the head, we make up the church body. That is how it was designed. But man (with the devil) has flipped it to where people think church is the key to salvation. No, Jesus is the head, he has the keys. Come home to Jesus and his words, he will not mislead you.
Here is the link I said. You can go read all the blasphemy yourself.
Revelation 18:4 KJV

Easter
Easter is here, bringing with it joy, chocolate, and time with loved ones. Celebrate the holiday with egg hunts, delicious meals, and maybe even a visit from the Easter Bunny!
Easter is considered one of the most important holidays in the Christian faith, and is typically observed with various customs, such as attending church services, taking part in Easter egg hunts, and sharing meals with loved ones.
Easter Sunday, which is the main day of celebration, falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox, which marks the beginning of spring. The date of Easter can therefore vary from year to year, but it is always celebrated in the springtime. In addition to the religious significance of Easter, it is also a time for many people to celebrate new beginnings and the arrival of spring.
History of Easter
Easter has its roots in the ancient traditions of the Jewish people. The holiday is linked to the Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. According to the Christian faith, Jesus was crucified and buried during the celebration of Passover, and his resurrection on the third day after his death is seen as the fulfillment of the promise of salvation that is central to the Christian faith.
The origins of the word “Easter” are somewhat unclear, but it is believed to be derived from the Old English word “Eostre,” which was the name of a pagan goddess associated with spring and fertility. In the early centuries of Christianity, the celebration of Easter was an important part of the faith, and the holiday was marked with various traditions, including fasting, prayer, and special services in churches.
Over time, the celebration of Easter has evolved and taken on various forms in different cultures and regions. In many countries, Easter is marked with the exchange of Easter eggs, which are often decorated and hidden for children to find during Easter egg hunts. The Easter bunny, a popular symbol of the holiday, is also associated with the tradition of giving and receiving Easter eggs. In addition to these secular traditions, many people also observe Easter with religious activities like going to church services, and participating in parades and processions.
How to Celebrate Easter
There are many ways that people celebrate Easter around the world. Some common traditions include:
Attending church services: Many people celebrate Easter by attending special services at their place of worship, such as mass or Easter Sunday services. These services often include hymns, prayers, and sermons that focus on the significance of Jesus’ resurrection.
Participating in Easter egg hunts: Many families and communities organize Easter egg hunts, where children search for eggs that are often filled with small treats or toys.
Decorating Easter eggs: Decorating Easter eggs is a popular activity, and people often use dye, stickers, or other materials to create colorful and creative designs.
Sharing meals with family and friends: Easter is often seen as a time to come together with loved ones, and many people celebrate by hosting or attending special meals and gatherings.
Giving Easter gifts: It is common for people to exchange Easter gifts, such as chocolate Easter eggs, Easter baskets filled with treats, or other small presents.
Participating in parades and other events: Many communities hold special events to celebrate Easter, such as parades, festivals, or other activities.
Taking part in other religious activities: Some people celebrate Easter by participating in other religious activities, such as fasting, praying, or reading passages from the Bible.
Fun Facts About Easter
The Easter bunny, a popular symbol of the holiday, is believed to have originated in Germany, where it was said to bring baskets of colored eggs to children.
In the United States, the White House holds an annual Easter egg roll on the White House lawn.
The world’s largest Easter egg hunt took place in Ontario, Canada in 2015, with over 500,000 eggs hidden throughout the city.
The Easter lily, a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus, is often used to decorate churches and homes during the holiday.
The Easter parade, a popular tradition in New York City, features people dressed in their finest Easter attire parading down Fifth Avenue.
In Greece, people traditionally dye Easter eggs red to symbolize the blood of Jesus.
The traditional Easter meal in many countries is roast lamb, which is a symbol of the sacrifice of Jesus.
In the Philippines, people celebrate Easter by holding parades featuring large floats and displays of Easter themes.
Easter is a popular time for people to travel, and many people take vacations or visit family and friends during the holiday.

Cult House, a List, by me
1.) Sister: "[cult leader] has been thrown out of hundreds of churches!"
BIL: "It's like--if you don't want to follow the bible, maybe choose another religion!"
(sister and bil laugh wryly)
Me: : ) cool
2. Complaining about any kind of ache, pain, or illness leads to a chorus of voices saying, "[malady] be healed in Jesus' name." You will have hands laid on you if you're close enough. The children can say and do this perfectly and do at every opportunity. Afterward everyone immediately continues with whatever task they were in the middle of before you admitted your demon possession. It is wildly creepy
3. Nephew: "aunt Rachel will you come say prayers with us"
Me: (chokes on a salad)
4. Nephew: AUNT RACHEL what's your favorite bible story
Me: thinks of Tamar
Me: FUCK u can't just say TAMAR
Nephew: "mine is when Jesus came back to life and LAZARUS"
Me:
Me: "whole book of revelations"
5. Me: "What's the WiFi password"
BIL: *hands me sheet of paper with the most religious bullshit you can imagine*
6. No art on the walls. If it is, it's Christian. Same for all books: it's either Christian or it ain't nothin. Everything is cheap, derivative, and colorless. I feel like i have been enveloped in mayonnaise
7. Big map of the world on the wall, the planets in order in sticker form, hand soap: I never know which modern practices they're going to believe or why they believe them. They clearly hate pills and vaccinations but it's like, no, no, hand soap keeps the demons away, after all we read it in Leviticus

What are like your go to Bible study tips??
Read the bible WITH God. Put your phone into silent mode, go to a quiet place, put some ambient music or rain sounds or one of these asmr rooms on yt on and pray, invite God in and talk to Him.
When then studying my bible, I go extremely simple. I choose one bible that I love, take one cute highlighter and just read like I would read a book highlighting whatever I want/ feel led to. I don't study for aesthetics or instagram pictures, I study for comprehension. I want to read my bible for a decent ammount of time, like at least 15-25 mins or longer and actually understand the content and retain it. I also look up anything I don't understand on Google or watch a "the bible project" youtube video summarizing the book I am reading BEFORE I start a new book, to really have a clear idea of the story.
I do this, because my main goal is not prayer, since I already prayed a lot before opening my bible, my goal is to actually know and understand the entire bible perfectly one day, so I read a decent ammount at a time. Most people prefer to only read small portions of text at a time and then pray and meditate on it, which is also cute and I'll do that too every so often, but I have this huge theological interest and I want to know the bible in it's entirety so bad.
I think especislly us women tend to romanticize time in the word and see it as an opportunity to buy so much stuff we think we need in order to make bible time enjoyable like stationary and stickers and candles and so on, and I love that stuff too but I just wanna know the bible. You don't need all that. You need your bible, a highlighter, and if you have a journaling bible a simple pen to write. That's it.
I do it like that because I think time in the bible is enjoyable AS IT IS and not because I added 100 candles and stickers and so on. I actually like reading the bible and that's what I prayed for for so long. I don't need stuff to convince me I am having a fun time. I'll take my bible outside with a cappuccino and sit and read peacefully and attentively.
If you have trouble remembering what you read, that's because it is foreign to you. Do a google search and familiarize yourself with the content of a book before you start it first and then when you read it, you will understand exactly where you are in the story.
I used to think the bible is a big scary book that's difficult to understand. Get a bible translation that is easy to read and understand, I like ESV or NIV. Be curious and read, read the gospels first. Joy comes from understanding your bible.
