My Trust Fall with the Universe
I am a teacher. I used to shy away from claiming that title. Used to fear being perceived as “less than,” mediocre, or boring. There is no profession more severely underpaid and under-appreciated in our country than the diligent and loving job of educators. And because my profession is so misunderstood, I was afraid of being misunderstood too. Beautifully, however, every single person in this world smiles with light in their eyes when I tell them what I do. I love being a teacher almost as much as I love being alive.
I currently teach humanities, my aspiration is to teach spirituality. I want to hold space for people to learn, to heal, and to grow. I want to teach my students how to be emotionally intelligent. How to access the loving life force within them. How to breathe deeply, how to nourish themselves in the present moment. I want to light the way for others to find their way home. Home to the light, the God/Goddess energy within all of us.
Now, while I went to university to be able to teach subjects like English and History, I knew an American university wasn’t the place to go. I found myself taking random courses here and there: First I took courses in facilitating sacred spaces, courses in herbalism, courses in pranayama, and of course, so so so much yoga. Out of all my studies, yoga was the most nourishing for me. It helped me alter my sense of self, it gave me presence, loving-confidence, and so much liberation.
I knew I wanted to study yoga and teach it. Now I had options, many options. I could do an online yoga training, hard pass! Learning online is tedious and lonely and I knew my soul would not thrive or grow. I could find a local yoga studio and spend every weekend driving to yoga trainings. Personally I didn’t love the idea of booking all of my weekends. So that left a retreat. Going away for a month to a school somewhere in the world where I could rise every day with no other intention in my heart or on my mind other than yoga.
Now there were so many options in this new possibility too. I could go to Costa Rica, could go to Mexico City, could go to Bali. But after long and extended hours of research, I found myself booking a flight to Rishikesh India, a Himalayan Mountain town on the other side of the world.
Yes, I was very, very, daunted in the face of this new dream of mine. But it was six months away, and it gave me something to work for and plan for. I didn’t count down the days, but I spent every week for six months physically preparing my body and my mind for a month of daily yoga practice.
Unsurprisingly, the six months flew by, and before I knew it, my trip to the other side of the world was a single day away. I was terrified, happy, excited, sad, and extremely overwhelmed all at the same time. During this period of my life I discovered that I contain multitudes. I can be extremely happy and extremely sad at the same time. Can feel joyously excited while also being gut-wrenchingly terrified. I learned to hold space for these extremities in my heart, learned to breath through them, learned to let them flow instead of letting them make me rigid.
During this time of my life, I took a trust fall with the universe.
And guess what?
The Universe caught me. It always had, and it always will. But I needed to leap into the unknown to truly feel the LOUD LOVING PASSIONATE support of God and Goddess. They are with me. They are with you. And if you don’t feel or see them, stick with me, and you’ll find your way home to them.
