ellen weinberg
a lot of people online like to praise her because they love her kids, but before she was mama hughes, ellen weinberg was an even more accomplished athlete than her wikipedia page can tell you. well i have way too much time on my hands and an affinity for googling things, so here is a not-so-little primer on the matriarch of hockey who has contributed far more than just her superstar children.
(basically anything not sourced is from the cammi & aj podcast i have a transcript of)
born in st. louis, she was told she couldn't play hockey because girls couldn't play on boys teams in the state of missouri, and there were no girls teams. went to bob johnson's hockey camp in aspen at age 7. moved to dallas at age 8, where she was allowed to play on the boys team. at age 12, is featured in a news clip "girl hockey player" where she says she wants to one day play professional hockey.
Tumblr media
at 15, wins nationals with her U-19 soccer team, the dallas sting, and they are sent to represent the US in the first ever FIFA-sanctioned world women’s tournament in china and proceeded to win gold against all expectations becoming the first US team to win any international soccer competition, male or female. also on this team was her best friend, future woso legend carla werden (overbeck). 1, 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
other noteworthy teammates: she played with mia hamm on her state team and was roommates with brandi chastain at her first youth national team camp for soccer.
she was recruited to lots of top schools for soccer, but chose the university of new hampshire because it was also offering hockey. she describes this as "the lack of landscape really drove my next move" because there was only 31 D1 women's soccer programs in the country at the time, and none in the state of texas.
she reached out to the women's hockey coach at unh, russ mccurdy, and told him she was being recruited for soccer but was really coming to unh because she wanted to play hockey, and he told her that it was unlikely she would make the team. so bob johnson called and asked him to give her a shot, and he said ok. he allowed her to have a one week tryout once soccer season was over, and after the first day, he asked, "what size skates do you wear?" and that was it, she was on the team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the women's soccer coach, marge anderson, was also a lacrosse player, and encouraged ellen to join the lacrosse team that needed more players. so she did. in her own words:
"I wasn't very good. I could run, but my stick skills- and I learned and I did everything, and it was great, and we went to the Final Four, but I was out at that point. So everybody always says I played three sports like, I was on the team. I was, you know, three sports at that level. I was done at that point and I stuck with soccer and hockey after my first year. But it was a really cool experience."
she may have not been very good but she did go on to coach her own kids teams in lacrosse (and potentially owen power, who is confirmed to have played lacrosse with them but it is not confirmed that it was when she coached them)
Tumblr media
(she was #21)
she was an elite skater and creative player, and "would often find herself in trouble in Durham for rushing the puck from her defensive post or trying things like a spin-o-rama".
Tumblr media
she helped UNH win 3 hockey championships in 4 years, made the all-new england team (soccer) as a freshman, was named an unh athlete of the year finalist after an injury that kept her out for an entire school year, was named to the ECAC all star team, was an ISAA senior recognition award winner, was soccer co-captain in 1990, and then captain of both the soccer and hockey teams as a senior X
Tumblr media
in april 1991, she participated in the Eastern Regional Tryouts of the US National Women's Hockey Team
"We've got it pretty good, playing defense," says senior Ellen Weinberg to fellow defenseman Weston. "There aren't as many of us to choose from. But then, when you look at who's there, they're all good!"
she then went on to pursue a graduate degree at UNH where she was an assistant coach for both soccer and hockey for two years, all the while contributing to historical hockey research to the point that she is named in the acknowledgements of Hockey: A Global History by Hardy & Holman
“It was my way of staying involved because I had nowhere to play. Then I participated in the 1992 World Championship, finished my master's degree. Then I really had nowhere to play." (google translated)
Tumblr media
The New Hampshire Vol. 83 No. 18 (Nov. 6 1992)
then in 1992, she played for the women's national team in both soccer and hockey.
Tumblr media
the soccer team didn't play in any big tournaments that year, but for hockey she went to women's worlds in tampere, finland, where she was an alternate captain. the US won silver, with ellen scoring 3 or 4 assists in 5 games (depending on which source you believe) and ellen was named to the all-star team by the media as the top player in her position.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also in 1992, she was a power skating coach at the summerland female hockey academy, teaching future star hayley wickenheiser.
there was hope that women's hockey would be a part of the 1994 olympics, but when that didn't happen, ellen went to norway anyways to grow the game.
“They were hoping women’s hockey was going to be sanctioned in the ‘94 Olympics and it wasn’t, so the Norwegian ice hockey federation had all this extra funding so they asked USA Hockey for an ambassador to go over and help grow the women’s game,” she said. “We had played in the ’92 World Championships and I was one of the older people and they offered me that opportunity to go over and work with the Norwegian ice hockey federation and what I did was I lived in Oslo. “And I went around to all the little towns and taught the girls how to play. It was awesome. Since Norway was such a small country with four million people at the time, they needed all the buses during the Olympics so everyone went on holiday, so my job stopped for three weeks.” X
ELLEN WEINBERG of Boston and the University of New Hampshire was interested in Coach TIM TAYLOR's tactics at practice. The 25-year-old Weinberg, one of America's best female players, is advising Norway's women's teams. Women's hockey becomes an Olympic sport in 1998. "They complain in Norway that I coach too long on the ice," she said. "They should see this guy, always instructing." X
she was invited to camp in lake placid for the 1994 women’s worlds (which took place every two years then), but suffered a serious knee injury that she believes is because they didn’t have proper support/training facilities
“We didn’t have a gym at the time. It was so different. We just played relying on our athletic instincts. If I got injured, it’s probably because I didn’t have the ideal support,” (google translated) X
by 1996 she was playing for the itech blaiders roller hockey team in NJ (and her then-boyfriend, jim, was coaching the new jersey rockin’ rollers) while also working in broadcasting
she had been considered a lock for the nagano olympics, despite being “old” but that “blown-out knee effectively ended her competitive career” :(
she ended up in nagano anyways as a reporter for cbs, one of her first big gigs in her media career, which i can do a part 2 on if there's interest.
and currently she’s on the USA hockey foundation board and is a player development consultant for the women’s national team

“A hundred songs name him. At seventeen he was champion of the world and king of soccer. Before he was twenty the government of Brazil named him a "national treasure not to be exported." He won three world championships with the Brazilian team and two with the club Santos. After his thousandth goal, he kept on counting. He played more than thirteen hundred matches in eighty countries, one after another at a punishing rate, and he scored nearly thirteen hundred goals. Once he held up a war: Nigeria and Biafra declared a truce to see him play.
To see him play was worth a truce and a lot more. When Pele ran hard, he cut right through his opponents like a hot knife through butter. When he stopped, his opponents got lost in the labyrinths his legs embroidered. When he jumped, he climbed into the air as if it were a staircase. When he executed a free kick, his opponents in the wall wanted to turn around to face the net, so as not to miss the goal.
He was born in a poor home in a far-off village, and he reached the summit of power and fortune where blacks were not allowed. Off the field he never gave a minute of his time and a coin never fell from his pocket. But those of us who were lucky enough to see him play received alms of extraordinary beauty: moments so worthy of immortality that they make us believe immortality exists.”

5 - The Peak of Happiness
When Kenyu entered high school, his life had been even more fulfilling than it ever was before. With his characteristic dribbling abilities and power to charge on, he became a regular even as a first year. He gained the name “The 1-on-1 Emperor” and became a the center of attention within the prefecture, a new member whom people expected much out of. Through hard work he produced results, and those results give him confidence in himself. His self confidence made him sparkle more and more. Somehow, that very aura had caught the eye of a photographer for a fashion magazine. Kenyu and his friends had traveled to Tokyo, in the process stopping by Harajuku.
“Hey you! Wanna be a model?”
“Huh?”
“What do you say you come join our agency? You’ve got this great aura.”
He has a nice appearance and has a glowing aura. Thanks to his beautician mother, his refined looks had caused him to stand out in the area. Kenyu politely refused
“Sorry, I’m just out here shopping with my friends. I don’t really have any interest in doing something like that.”
“Well, what if I just take one picture of you! Is that alright?”
Kenyu wasn’t sure what that “well” implied, but the photographer seemed really pushy.
“Sorry I can’t. Next month is the Japanese Nationals Championship. I’m afraid something like that would impede a bit.”
“Seriously!? You’re that incredible!? I’ve found a golden egg!” The photographer had let his ramblings slip, clearly getting even more hyped up. Kenyu’s friends came around to ask what was going on, wondering if their friend had just been scouted. He was originally planning on turning the photographer down, but since both his friends were so enthusiastic about it, he got caught up in the excitement. The photographer asked for his name, to which Kenyu gave him. Just like that, Kenyu was swept away into doing a photoshoot right then and there. Photographer asked what his future plans were to which he replied that he was trying to go pro and wanted to become the number one striker in the world. To Kenyu’s unwavering conviction, the photographer matched his enthusiasm. “That’s amazing! If anyone can do it, it’s you!” It wasn’t just lip service. Despite his initial impression, the photographer was also quite pure of heart. He certainly had the aura that made Kenyu think so.
A handsome soccer player egg. The pics of Kenyu were featured in a magazine geared towards the current decade’s male fashion scene. It seems it was widely well received. Next month, the editor and photographer purposely came all the way out to Miyazaki for a photoshoot. Kenyu had come to regularly appear in the magazine. The talent agency had reached out to him, leading him to ask his parents for advice. In the end, he signed with the agency. This time, he was shooting as a full body model and would be published on a full page of the magazine issue. Receiving praise for his looks and his athleticism, his previous popularity that was limited to his prefecture had expanded to the entire nation. After one look at him, girls would flock to his games from other prefectures bearing fan service handheld fans, forming their own military force to cheer him on. Receiving their support, Kenyu was honestly happy. They call him strong and amazing while he plays soccer and cool and handsome during his model activities.
Everyday was fun. And from those days, he established a core value: I’m, undoubtedly, one of the chosen ones. He’s made it this far in life, having been constantly watched over and chosen. If he lives honestly, following his heart, people will gather and connect. Thus, he will be blessed by the people. There isn’t anything he’s afraid of. He’ll live as he is, purely as himself. For now, all he needs to do is keep trying his best in soccer. Then, someday, he’ll be on the National team, win the World Cup, and become the world’s number 1 striker. Not once had he thought that this dream was overambitious. All he needs to do is believe. As long as he keeps living honestly, this dream, too, will surely come true. To be chosen, and to be watched over. God is watching over me. That’s what Kenyu believed from the bottom of his heart, without a hint of doubt. It was only after two years time that he had realized that was the happiest era of his life, in the season where the cherry blossoms scatter once again.
6- A Lifetime’s Worth of Tears
It was the spring of his third year in high school. Yukimiya Kenyu was the ace of Soranin High School, the year that would be their ticket to Nationals, Kenyu’s last year of high school. In his first and second year, he was a regular on the team. Both times they made it to Nationals, but lost after one match. But this year will be different. As ace and captain, he’ll definitely lead the team to victory. If they have the power of the 1-on-1 Emperor on their side, they can achieve it. He’s been waiting to be scouted to go pro too. If they win, they’ll definitely catch the recruiters’ eyes! To Kenyu, it was a future he didn’t have to worry about. After practice, he walked home with his teammates. Just in case it was to rain, practice was held inside the gym, though it didn’t make it any less grueling. His teammates noticed that Kenyu had paused, asking him what was wrong.
“Sorry…my eyes..it’s just…they’re kinda blurry.”
In front of him were his two friends, holding onto their umbrellas. The rain narrowed his field of view and the sky was already gloomy. But there was a darkness, different from that of the sky, that was blotting his vision. No, his field of vision was being eaten away by a black haze. His friends asked if he was okay, to which he tried to focus on their faces, but to no avail. They still remained hazy, and he couldn’t see them clearly. He thought a good night’s sleep would have it fixed by morning, but by the next day, his vision was still out of sorts. Kenyu’s vision had never been good, but it seems like lately, it’s been deteriorating a lot more. Just in case, he decided to visit an eye doctor at a large hospital. Surgery to fix vision does exist, so Kenyu wonders if that’s something he needs to consider if he wants to go pro. That’s about as far as he thought, but his diagnosis was something he never would’ve imagined.
“When you’re tired, your field of vision narrows and blind spots appear. You have optic neuropathy.”
He’s an old doctor, well known and reputable in the region, but with a kind tone of voice, he had straightforwardly informed Kenyu of his diagnosis.
“The progression of the disease cannot be stopped, accompanied by headaches and nausea, and in the worst cases…complete blindness.”
In the worst cases, complete blindness.
“But with proper treatment, we can slow its progression. For the most part, you don’t need to worry about going completely blind. You can continue living your everyday life and your model activities without any issues.”
The examination room was quiet. Even with the doctor’s kind tone and the slow speed he spoke, Kenyu was unable to process the information immediately. Blindness. Model. Everyday life. Kenyu had felt feelings he had never felt before. As if his legs had been crushed, it was a chilling feeling that sent shivers down his spine. For the first time in his life, he felt fear.
Pushing away his fears, he asked the doctor, “Um…what about soccer…..?”
The doctor remained silent for a moment, then proceeded to answer carefully, not letting is kind tone waver.
“You’ll be able to play it as a hobby…but if you continue playing as you have now while the disease progresses….honestly I think it may be a bit difficult…”
Kenyu’s legs shook and his hands turned cold.
“Unfortunately, I can’t say that the path to becoming pro would be extremely hard..”
The doctor’s kind voice. The cruel verdict.
Why…why me…
The shaking in his body had spread as his body ran cold.
“Doctor…I haven’t…done anything bad before..”, Kenyu had squeezed out in a wavering voice. He’d never done anything to make God hate him. All he did was try his best in soccer. He hadn’t done anything unfair or unjust. He just immersed himself in soccer, honestly and purely.
Why is it being taken…away from me…
Like a whining child, his voice was shaken with tears.
“I wanted to become number 1 in soccer…it’s not right…this situation….I don’t accept it…”
Holding his shaking body, he lets his tears fall. Once after the other, they poured like down his face as he collapsed onto the bed.
“Give me…back my dream…” I don’t care about anything else. He couldn’t bring himself to say those last words. The real Kenyu is shy and stoic. He’s a small boy who doesn’t talk to friends and sits quietly at his seat. He took up everything he had to lead that Kenyu to where he is now. He couldn’t believe that God would do something so cruel. The joy when he bought his first soccer ball. The day he played soccer with Cannavaro. The times he’d laugh with his teammates at soccer school. And up until just yesterday, when he had been trying with all his might to win the National Championship. To get on the Japanese National team, win the World Cup, and become the world’s number one striker, the version of himself he believed in just up until this very moment. It felt like everything was a distant lie. In despair, he doesn’t want to lose anything. His tears continue to fall with no end.
“Why…why..no…I still…”
Crying a lifetime’s worth of tears, he couldn’t stop sobbing.
“I know..Yukimiya.”
The doctor gets on his knees and places his hands on Kenyu’s shoulders.
“We’ll do everything we can. I’ll support your journey in becoming pro all I can. But your condition will progress. The time in which you’ll be able to showcase your skills is limited. Even with all that, do you still want to follow your dream..?”
Finally, Kenyu raised his head. He shouldn’t give up on his dream. It’s still possible.
“….Yes.” His tears had dried as he grabbed onto the small glimmer of hope.
God had once again….looked after me…
7-In my heart
From then on, Kenyu devoted himself to soccer more than he ever had before, because someday, he wouldn’t be able to play anymore. So in the limited time he had before his eyes fully deteriorated, he wanted to go all in. He couldn’t waste his time scrolling away on his phone or hanging out with friends. When he had free time, he spent it all running around or studying soccer tactics. I’ve gotta be more efficient, gotta perfect it, gotta do more….
It was very in character for one-track minded Kenyu. His stoicism, honesty, and determination all came together to realize the ultimate short-period training boot camp regimen. I don’t have time. To me…time….
“Hey, hasn’t Yukki been kinda scary lately?”, a teammate had commented while Kenyu wasn’t in the room. He had quickly gone home right after practice had ended. “I know what you mean. If you make even a small mistake, he gets pissed. It is our fault for causing slip ups though..”, a teammate, who got yelled at by Kenyu today to stay focused, shrugged in response.
“No that’s not what I meant….er how should I put this…he gets so angry it’s like he’s about to cry.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
A bystander who had heard their conversation interjected, expressing his agreement in Kenyu’s recent behavior.
“It seems like Yukki’s really in a rush, almost like he’s being chased by something”, the newcomer had said. He had been always honest and stoic, but now it seems he’s not as much so. In the past, he would walk home with his friends, chatting about pointless things. He’d even wave at his fangirls waiting at the school gates. Now, he didn’t talk to anyone unless needed, and he blatantly ignored his fans. He had no leeway in his life, and it was like he couldn’t see anything but soccer.
“What could he be running from? He’s been blessed with everything.”
Kenyu hadn’t talked to anyone but his parents about his eye condition, so no one knew about it. Talent, appearance, popularity, physicality. He had it all, so his teammates were couldn’t understand what was going on.
If I don’t hurry and show results….I’ve gotta find the fastest route to joining the National team..!…damn it…!….damn it….!!
When Kenyu got home, he reflected on today’s practice in the shower. His ideal play that would lead the team to championship victory, he couldn’t afford to have his teammates’ mistakes. Filled with frustration and haste, his body grew hot, but he knew this anger shouldn’t be poured all out onto his teammates.
Calm down…this..isn’t like me.
He reflected on the missed moves and took a deep breath.
I don’t know how many years I have left, but if I just live honestly, God will certainly watch over me. That’s why definitely…..” Definitely? Suddenly, Kenyu was scared. His dream of the World Cup felt too far. If someday his disease takes a turn for the worst, he might not be able to play soccer anymore. Hadn’t it seemed like God had casted his dream, his dream of achieving everything he could ever wish for, right into the pits of hell. But Kenyu had been discovered, chosen, and watched after. So surely, that couldn’t be the case. After he fulfills his dream, he would even be okay with quitting soccer. He lives now for the sake of that one moment of joy. But try as hard as he might, he wondered why he felt like he was falling deeper into a hopeless abyss. He wasn’t sure if he’d be able to go pro with his own strength. And even if he manages to go pro, if he doesn’t play in the World Cup, then it’ll all be over. Maybe his hard work is all in vain. Maybe he should just quit while he’s ahead. If he gives up on soccer now, he could become a full time model. The staff at the agency had already tried to persuade him several times. He isn’t bound by just one path to the future. No….but….that’s not what he really wants to do. He wants to play soccer. He wants to be the world’s number one soccer player. Kenyu shook his head. Don’t hesitate. After all, he hasn’t done anything wrong. He’s put his all into doing my best. It’d be strange if there were no payout. He’ll fulfill his dream, surely, if he doesn’t give up now….but that was just a convenient delusion, some dreams do get destroyed. There aren’t any guarantees. He calmly told himself that, let the thoughts run around his head, and once again became rather scared. As if he’d been sprinting with all his might, alone, along the edge of a cliff, he was terrified. He was shaken, and tears welled up in his eyes. He couldn’t sleep. He was haunted by a horror-filled night. As if he were just clinging on, he watched heart-warming movies and listened to happy music to try and soothe himself. Even if the future stole soccer from him, “Soccer isn’t all there is to life”, is what he thought to himself. He reaffirmed is weak, insecure self with that reasoning, by hearing that that was okay, and then proceeded to look for uplifting music. The movies and music worked like a tranquilizer, calming him down, helping Kenyu somehow make it through day by day.
8- Story:
The preliminaries that would determine the prefecture’s representatives thus began.
“As expected of the 1-on-1 emperor!” “Yukki! Yukki! Yukki!” The fans, who knew nothing about his eye condition, yelled out their supporting chants as their team won their first match without a hitch. Before, Kenyu would smile back at the supporters, but now he didn’t have the time to spare to do so. If they lose, it’s all over. As that sentiment lingered in his mind, he was unable to sleep. The road from qualifiers to the national championship was a long one. His heart raced at the thought. But lack of sleep would accelerate his disease, so he wanted to get a full 8 hours of sleep. As his anxiety continued, he was still unable to fall asleep. The days where he was unable to fall asleep, awake until the sun rose, continued. One day, he thought to look for some white noise. He blearily picked up his phone and began to search and found the perfect playlist. Whispering vocals played along with a heartwarming melody. He had never heard this song before. Closing his eyes and listening to the music, he finally fell into slumber. He woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. From the song his listened to last night, one phrase remained in his mind. “God doesn’t give us trials we can’t overcome.” He didn’t know whose song this was. He doesn’t know if he really heard it or if he was dreaming, but that phrased became his crutch. Trials that we can overcome…he repeated those words over and over in his mind. To himself, that was crying, terrified at the thought of his eye disease. To himself, who hadn’t given up on soccer. The versions of himself that had seemed so scattered had come together and become one. “As I thought, God has been watching over me. God will never give me trials that I can’t overcome..” Both his weak self and his hardworking self had been acknowledged. It’ll be okay, he’ll overcome his trials. Kenyu had gained his confidence, stronger than ever before.
“How is it, Doctor…?” It was the day of his scheduled visit to the eye doctor. He was getting new glasses made and needed to get his prescription checked.
“They look good on you.
These are a pair of new glasses to commemorate how smoothly your treatment is going. It’s a good thing, maintaining it your condition. It’s by no means cured, but it hasn’t gotten worse…I think it’s safe to say you can continue carrying on comfortably and easily”, the doctor replied with a thumbs up. Kenyu was relieved. Everytime, he had been on the verge of tears, so scared to find out the results of his medical exam. This time, it was different though.
“Doctor…I’ve finally come to terms with my condition.”
“Is that so? That’s good.”
His heart had calmed. The doctor spoke in his kind tone, just as he always had.
“‘God never gives us trials we can’t overcome.’ That’s what I said, right? I was given this trial, and that’s why it must be destiny that I’ll overcome it.” As long as he doesn’t give up, he’ll surely fulfill his dreams. That’s what he believes. That’s his story.
From then one, he team steadily advanced. With his deadly plays, Kenyu lead the team through consecutive overwhelming victories. He completely overwhelmed other schools’ teams, ultimately qualifying for nationals.
Yes! First step complete. Perhaps because he had overcome his doubts, he was able to properly express his gratitude to the enthusiastic fans with a bow. He was able to share his joy with his cheering teammates.
But the real battle begins now. Winning Nationals, getting scouted, getting on the National team, winning the World Cup. If he takes them on step by step, he’ll definitely get closer to his dream. Though his time is limited, he can still see it. He can still fight! He can still…!
The next day, a letter from the JFU had arrived at Kenyu’s house. “You’ve been specially selected by the Japanese Football Union” it read. Yes, he got it….! His thoughts had become his conviction, and a refreshing smile appeared on Kenyu’s face. As long as he keeps pushing forward honestly, God with surely watch over him. Surely.
….God….no, Ego Jinpachi had been watching over him. To Kenyu, he couldn’t tell if this man was a god or a devil. The answer lies in Blue Lock. We’re still in the middle of Kenyu’s story. Just go, honestly, straightforwardly, with all your might. Believe in your dream of becoming the world’s best striker. Yukimiya Kenyu, with his unbreakable hope in his heart, smiling without a doubt, continued onwards towards the prison. What he didn’t know, was that within the confines of Blue Lock awaited an egoist (Isagi Yoichi) that he had never met before.
kenyu yukimiya ily 🥹 GET MY MAN OFF THE BENCH 🗣️ because i already loved him sm but reading these is making me just want to give him a hug 😭😭😭 my baby

Play Like A Girl!
Women's Soccer in the United States ⚽⚽⚽
Tumblr media
From its early days, the story of women's soccer is one of resilience, determination, and sheer love for the game.
The first recorded women's soccer match in the U.S. took place way back in 1922, featuring the Dick, Kerr's Ladies of England and a local amateur St. Louis team. While this historic match sparked interest, the sport didn't really take off until the 1970s.
A game-changer was the passing of Title IX in 1972, a federal law that said "no way" to sex-based discrimination in schools. This opened the door for more opportunities in sports, including women's soccer.
Tumblr media
The first NCAA Women's Soccer Championship took place in 1982, further legitimizing the sport at the collegiate level.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) was formed in 1985, making their international debut at the Mundialito tournament in Italy that same year.
Tumblr media
The team's success in the 1991 Women's World Cup, where they emerged as champions, marked a turning point in the popularity and recognition of women's soccer in the United States.
Tumblr media
In 1999, the United States hosted the World Cup. The USWNT captured the hearts of fans everywhere with their nail-biting victory against China in a penalty shootout. Who can forget Brandi Chastain's iconic celebration after scoring the winning goal? That moment became a symbol of the growth and success of women's soccer–and women athletes–in the United States.
Tumblr media
Fast forward to 2013, when the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) was created as the go-to professional league for women's soccer in the U.S. Today, the NWSL and USWNT continue to make waves in the sport, with the national team winning multiple Olympic gold medals and World Cup titles. So get out there, and Play Like a Girl!

oh please gay middle aged men….
ok i wanted to answer this as soon as i got it but it was past midnight for me and i had to go to sleep lol. anyway i'm awake now so It's Time. (i wrote so much more than i thought i would. i've been typing for like an hour...)
so it all started when i had to write a 10 minute play for a creative writing project last year. we did some brainstorming exercises to make sure everyone in the class had something compelling to write for, and one of those exercises involved selecting common tropes in famous plays at random. so we had to pick three slips of paper from the box and come up with a story that ties in the three tropes we ended up with. the professor was a little concerned when i pulled "nationalism," "fate vs free will," and . a third thing i can't for the life of me remember. it honestly might have been like "nature vs man" lol i don't know. anyway, everyone was surprised when i actually came up with something.
the original story goes like this: three average american dudes living average american lives. they don't follow soccer, but they know that team usa is somehow on their way to the world cup, so they've employed their usual (over-the-top) superstitions to help them along. the night before the championship, one of them orders chinese takeout (they're not allowed to order "enemy cuisine" until that team is out of the running (china hasn't qualified for the world cup since 2002 but just pretend with me)) and ends up with an extremely specific fortune cookie that says as long as the three of them watch the whole match, usa will win. naturally, the paper then spontaneously combusts and he has to convince the other two without it.
so, on a stormy night three dudes who know next to nothing about soccer but combined have all the sports-related superstitions in the world are now watching the world cup, knowing that they have already set the outcome of the game in their favor just by seeing it through but not trusting that enough to abandon their frankly insane rituals. most of the comedy of the play is tied to someone being told to absolutely under no circumstances sit down/stand up/touch the tv remote/talk about losing/talk about winning/etc. in the end, the power briefly goes out in the storm, the game is lost in the few seconds they aren't watching, and the play closes with the commentators dragging usa for an incredible loss while the guys realize what happened.
i was happy with the play and received great remarks on it, but i've been wanting to rewrite it some before putting it anywhere. more importantly tho i spent so long writing these guys for a ten minute play that i came up with all sorts of side info for them. i also changed their names because i didn't like the ones i wrote for the class (i gave them dudebro names but they weren't middle-aged sounding enough lol).
first of all, they're in a polycule. they've known each other since childhood but only got together in adulthood, and they don't live together just yet. they all work fairly steady jobs and spend their time off at one of their places depending on what they plan on doing.
the one hosting the fifa watch party is adam. he's the most superstitious and as a former star athlete he knows the most of the three (minimal) about soccer. he has the nicest place with the biggest tv and keeps it mostly clean. it is mentioned in the play that he likes to watch asmr videos with the sound off because he doesn't like the sound.
the one who opened the fortune cookie is kenny, short for kenneth. he doesn't understand or give a damn about any sport and is extremely skeptical, but was interested to see how his weird as fuck fortune would turn out. he also drinks too much dr pepper. this does come up in the play. his place is actually a mess (he's very forgetful) but the other guys find it endearing. he thinks it's bizarre that the first guy watches asmr for the visuals since it's supposed to be about the sound.
the third guy is curtis. he's pretty superstitious but the only sport he really understands and pays attention to is american football. he spends most of the time acting super "usa! usa!" to the point where the other two are like "hey man you're not usually like this we're here for you if you need to talk." he's very emotional because he has a big heart. his house is a little messy but only because he has two or three dogs that everyone loves very much. he thinks asmr stands for "audio something something something."
i could continue to make up new things about them forever. they're like old friends to me. kenny loves food but can't cook (he Can but it doesn't turn out very well). curtis is the Real chef of the three, and the other two want him to make a living of it but he's not confident enough in his abilities. adam is a little bit scared of dogs but was introduced very gently to curtis' dogs and now they're mostly chill. kenny doesn't yet know that he's a cat person because he's a big fan of dogs and doesn't know that those aren't mutually exclusive (and then one day he rescues a stray kitten and that animal becomes his Child). curtis got the other two into street fighter when they were younger and is still a little upset that they both turned out to be better than him (and that they still are). god. my guys. my guys.
i love boring characters who experience situations it's like fun to me please understand. i've been wanting to write more plays with them and whatnot. whenever i get around to that i'll probably post about it on neocities :)
ok that's enough rambling for one morning lol hope everyone enjoyed it 👍

Interview with Leon about the national team and Bayern part 2
By sport1
Was the lack of cohesion also the problem at the Qatar World Cup?
We only had seven days of preparation before the World Cup. To develop such a spirit in such a short time is extremely difficult. Regardless of that, we've had another challenge for years: I think you, as a fan, just know: this is my team. That's the left winger, he's marching up and down and hitting crosses. That's the striker who scores goals for us. We are still looking for the best team and the best formation. We are currently in this process, to be honest.
Do team afternoons like Tuesday, when you and your colleagues went bowling, help you grow together as a unit?
The evening was great! We usually go out to eat together. Then we do the same as at the hotel. This time we play against each other in different teams in various lanes. You laugh together, have fun and get to know the guys even better through those evenings. That was good for us.
It is said that Julian Brandt was the best.
That's right, Jule played the best round, followed closely by Joshua and me. It was a lot of fun. To get back to the question: a team spirit can also develop over the course of a tournament if you have a sense of accomplishment. We barely knew each other at the 2017 Confederations Cup, but over the course of the tournament we became a real unit. It's clear that you grow together faster with a sense of achievement. Then the automatisms kick in, you get a run....
After the World Cup in Qatar, Joshua Kimmich confessed to us very honestly that he was afraid of falling into a mental hole and that he worries that he personally, and therefore his generation, will forever be associated with failure.
I know exactly what Jo meant by that. Before our generation, teams always reached the semifinals of the World Cup. So far we haven't managed to bring our qualities to the field in a tournament. That is extremely frustrating. The early exit from the World Cup was definitely the most difficult stage of my career.
Compared to the 2018 World Cup, I had a different role. As one of the leading players, I had completely different expectations of myself and the tournament. I can only thank those around me, my family and friends for supporting me so well during this time.
In a year's time, on June 14, the opening match of the European Championship will kick off in your own country. How can you ensure the important spirit of optimism?
The easiest way to do that is through convincing games and convincing victories. And we need that badly. What really frustrated me in Bremen is the fact that the fans wanted it! They were there and ready to make a lot of noise. But again we didn't get the spark to jump out at them.
When we did 2:3 and 3:3, I said to myself: How amazing it is when flags are flying everywhere! When you have a whole country behind you, it must be a unique feeling. We all want to experience that in the summer of 2024. But for that we have to do our part.
Society is more divided than it has been for decades. Politically we are experiencing a shift to the right - is the national team also suffering because people can't or won't identify with Germany and the team at the moment?
Good question! A positive person would say: We, the selection, can be the common denominator of all. This is also my desired scenario. It has always been like this: soccer brings people together and can bring different opinions back together, or at least put them in dialogue. You're happy about something together and still have lively discussions. Without burdening the players and the team too much, I am convinced that soccer has the power to give our country a positive boost again! Euro 2024 can come at the right time!
What are your memories of the last home tournament, the 2006 World Cup?
I was eleven years old at the time. I didn't have a jersey. But I immediately think back to the team spirit ball, which was available as a mini version in the menu at McDonald's at the time, and I dribbled around with it for the whole four weeks. I also think of all the flags on the cars. The World Cup and the national team were the talk of the town - all over the country. They were electrifying weeks. I really want to experience that as a player!
Is Hansi Flick the right trainer for this?
Yes, definitely. Thanks to the successful time at Bayern, I have a different image of him than maybe some players who only know him from the national team. I know what Hansi is capable of. I trust him 100 percent that he will coach us to a successful European championship.
Our SPORT1 expert Mario Basler harshly criticized his teammate Joshua Kimmich on the double pass and put forward the thesis that you suffer with Kimmich. "The bad thing is that he wants to do everything," Basler said. And: "Whoever plays next to him in midfield is the poorest, because he just runs back and forth." They even "trashed" him with that. How do you see it?
I am not a fan of these polarizing statements. In fact, Jo has always backed me in recent years. The situation has even changed a bit recently due to the change of position. I am 100 percent convinced of Joshua's qualities. As a player and even more as a person. I appreciate him very much, as a friend and as a teammate. It's a privilege to play with him for our country and at FC Bayern.
We have noticed these days that you have a special handshake. You grab your forearms with your hands. Tell us what it is?
I don't know if I can disclose that. I'd have to get Jo's permission first ( laughs ). But it's been our check for years. That's how we always salute. It's about a movie, I can tell you that much. It shouldn't be boring for you, as a reporter you have to do some research.
On Tuesday you will return to Gelsenkirchen with the test match against Colombia. What memories do you have of your time in S04?
I spent five very emotional and successful years there. Today I would be very satisfied with the placements at that time. In January 2018 my transfer was announced and I had to go through a steel bath with the fans. But I understood the pain of the fans. We finished runners-up and thanks to the success there was a happy turnaround. I received a standing ovation in the stadium. That completed the story at Schalke. It was a good moment.
Schalke relegated, your other former club, VfL Bochum, stayed. Mixed feelings for you?
Absolutely. It hurts a lot. As happy as I was for VfL, I also think there are hardly any football fans in Germany who want Schalke relegated. I even know Dortmund fans who wanted Schalke there. 04 belongs in the 1.Liga, no question!
I still have a lot of contact with players and staff and I can really appreciate what that means to the people at the club. You wouldn't wish relegation on anyone, especially the club you played for five years.
Do you still wear a blue and white band on your right wrist because of your connection to Schalke?
It's getting pretty personal today ( laughs ). But that's okay. I'll just reveal one thing: the blue ribbon is Sead Kolašinac's. We gave it to each other when he left. We are still in regular contact.
Can you imagine returning to the Ruhr area at some point?
Everyone knows that I am very connected to the Ruhr area just for family reasons. That's no secret. Schalke is a big club, just like Bochum. But that's not a problem for the next few years.
Karim Benzema moves to Saudi Arabia and earns more than 200 million euros. How do you feel about the trend of more and more experienced players going to the desert?
I read that you always wanted to play there ( smiles ). What can I say? The financial resources are huge in Arab countries. They are entitled to the fact that some players are dragging their feet in the autumn of their careers. Personally, I can absolutely rule it out. I would clearly prefer Bochum or Schalke.

oh yeah no f*ck workplace power dynamics. i am just jemily trash and think a well written pd story would be so good to set the scene for those two.
loved the idea that the other anon sent to you but idk i feel like doyle wouldn’t have bought an american woso club? I was thinking along the lines of emily, successful rich ambassador daughter doing whatever elizabeth wanted her to do after yale. she’s a rich socialite, but also very very gay. not in the closet, but not exactly throwing it in everyone’s faces but everyone knows. her other rich yale friends have been thinking of buying into becoming part owners of various woso clubs. it’s the new thing, good investment after the US woso team became world champions, a lot of celebs are doing it, and her socialite friends want in. she’s drunk at a club when her friends bring it up, making eyes at a cutie across the room, not paying attention to them so she says yeah sure whatever and walks away to the cute girl. the next thing she knows she’s signing papers saying she’s a part owner at the head office. emily has zero interest in soccer. she calls it football. knows nothing about it. just wants to sleep her hangover off. as she walks out of the conference room she slams into a small wall or what she thought was a wall. it’s jj. she’s just fit. newly signed for the team. or at least she just came in to sign contracts. was playing for an amateur women’s soccer team just below the national women’s soccer league, got picked up after winning the championship last season. she’s 26. she smiles at emily and says sorry and walks into the room emily just came out of. and emily is like damn i can get into this now and goes home and starts researching every little thing about woso. girl thinks she’s finally putting her degrees into practical use from all the research she does lmao. she finds out there are MULTIPLE gay women across the league. she literally has no clue about anything regarding soccer so she never expected it. wonders if that /one/ also plays for the other team.
Love it hahaha

Pelé, the Global Face of Soccer, Dies at 82
Pelé, who was declared a national treasure in his native Brazil, achieved worldwide celebrity and helped popularize the sport in the United States.

By Lawrie Mifflin Dec. 29, 2022
Pelé, one of soccer’s greatest players and a transformative figure in 20th-century sports who achieved a level of global celebrity few athletes have known, died on Thursday in São Paulo. He was 82.
His death was confirmed by his manager, Joe Fraga. The Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo said the cause was multiple organ failure, the result of the progression of colon cancer.
Pelé had been receiving treatment for cancer in recent years, and he entered the hospital several weeks ago for treatment of a variety of health issues, including a respiratory infection.
A national hero in his native Brazil, Pelé was beloved around the world — by the very poor, among whom he was raised; the very rich, in whose circles he traveled; and just about everyone who ever saw him play.
“Pelé is one of the few who contradicted my theory,” Andy Warhol once said. “Instead of 15 minutes of fame, he will have 15 centuries.”
Celebrated for his peerless talent and originality on the field, Pelé (pronounced peh-LAY) also endeared himself to fans with his sunny personality and his belief in the power of soccer — football to most of the world — to connect people across dividing lines of race, class and nationality.
He won three World Cup tournaments with Brazil and 10 league titles with Santos, his club team, as well as the 1977 North American Soccer League championship with the New York Cosmos. Having come out of retirement at 34, he spent three seasons with the Cosmos on a crusade to popularize soccer in the United States.
Before his final game, in October 1977 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., Pelé took the microphone on a podium at the center of the field, his father and Muhammad Ali beside him, and exhorted a crowd of more than 75,000.
“Say with me three times now,” he declared, “for the kids: Love! Love! Love!”
Tumblr media

In his 21-year career, Pelé — born Edson Arantes do Nascimento — scored 1,283 goals in 1,367 professional matches, including 77 goals for the Brazilian national team.
Many of those goals became legendary, but Pelé’s influence on the sport went well beyond scoring. He helped create and promote what he later called “o jogo bonito” — the beautiful game — a style that valued clever ball control, inventive pinpoint passing and a voracious appetite for attacking. Pelé not only played it better than anyone; he also championed it around the world.
Among his athletic assets was a remarkable center of gravity; as he ran, swerved, sprinted or backpedaled, his midriff seemed never to move, while his hips and his upper body swiveled around it.
He could accelerate, decelerate or pivot in a flash. Off-balance or not, he could lash the ball accurately with either foot. Relatively small, at 5 feet 8 inches, he could nevertheless leap exceptionally high, often seeming to hang in the air to put power behind a header.
Like other sports, soccer has evolved. Today, many of its stars can execute acrobatic shots or rapid-fire passing sequences. But in his day, Pelé’s playmaking and scoring skills were stunning.
Early Success
Pelé sprang into the international limelight at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, a slight 17-year-old who as a boy had played soccer barefoot on the streets of his impoverished village using rolled-up rags for a ball. A star for Brazil, he scored six goals in the tournament, including three in a semifinal against France and two in the final, a 5-2 victory over Sweden. It was Brazil’s first of a record five World Cup trophies.
Pelé also played on the Brazilian teams that won in 1962 and 1970. In the 1966 tournament, in England, he was brutally kicked in the early games and was finally sidelined by a Portuguese player’s tackle that would have earned an expulsion nowadays but drew nothing then.
With Pelé essentially absent, Brazil was eliminated in the opening round. He was so disheartened that he announced he would retire from national team play.
But he reconsidered and played on Brazil’s World Cup team in Mexico in 1970. That team is widely hailed as the best ever; its captain, Carlos Alberto, later joined Pelé on the Cosmos.
“I wish he had gone on playing forever,” Clive Toye, a former president and general manager of the Cosmos, wrote in a 2006 memoir. “But then, so does everyone else who saw him play, and those football people who never saw him play are the unluckiest people in the world.”

Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born on Oct. 23, 1940, in Três Corações, a tiny rural town in the state of Minas Gerais. His parents named him Edson in tribute to Thomas Edison. (Electricity had come to the town shortly before Pelé was born.) When he was about 7, he began shining shoes at the local railway station to supplement the family’s income.
His father, a professional player whose career was cut short by injury, was nicknamed Dondinho.
Brazilian soccer players often use a single name professionally, but even Pelé himself was unsure how he got his. He offered several possible derivations in “Pelé: The Autobiography” (2006, with Orlando Duarte and Alex Bellos).
Most probably, he wrote, the nickname was a reference to a player on his father’s team whom he had admired and wanted to emulate as a boy. The player was known as Bilé (bee-LAY). Other boys teased Edson, calling him Bilé until it stuck.
One of Pelé’s earliest memories was of seeing his father, while listening to the radio, cry when Brazil lost to Uruguay, 2-1, in the deciding match of the 1950 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The game is still remembered as a national calamity. Pelé recalled telling his father that he would one day grow up to win the World Cup for Brazil.
He signed his first contract, with a junior team, when he was 14 and transferred to Santos at 15. He scored four goals in his first professional game, which Santos won, 7-1. He was only 16 when he made his debut for the national team in July 1957.
A New Way to Play
When Brazil’s team went to the World Cup in Sweden the next summer, Pelé later said, he was so skinny that “quite a few people thought I was the mascot.”
Once they saw him play, it was a different story. Reports of this precocious Brazilian teenager’s prowess raced around the world. One account told of how, against Wales in the quarterfinals, with his back to the goal, he received the ball on his chest, let it drop to an ankle and instantly scooped it around behind him. As it bounced, he turned — so quickly that the ball was barely a foot off the ground — and struck it into the net. It was his first World Cup goal and the game’s only one, and it put Brazil into the semifinals.
“It boosted my confidence completely,” he wrote in his autobiography. “The world now knew about Pelé.”

The world now knew about Brazilian soccer, too. Pelé undoubtedly benefited from playing alongside other remarkably gifted ball-control artists — Garrincha, Didi and Vavá among them — as well as from Europe’s lack of familiarity with the Brazilian style.
Most European teams used static alignments; players seldom strayed from their designated areas.
Brazil, though, encouraged two of the four midfielders to behave like wingers when attacking. This forced opponents to cope quickly with four forwards, rather than two. Making things more difficult, the forwards often switched sides, right and left, and the outside fullbacks sometimes joined the attack. The effect dazzled onlookers, not to mention opponents.
After the semifinal against France, in which Pelé scored a hat trick in a 5-2 Brazil win, the French goalkeeper reportedly said, “I would rather play against 10 Germans than one Brazilian.”
The team went home to national acclaim, and Pelé resumed playing for Santos as well as for two Army teams as part of his mandatory military service. In 1959 alone, he endured a relentless schedule of 103 competitive matches; nine times, he played two games within 24 hours.
Santos began to capitalize on his fame with lucrative postseason tours. In 1960, en route to Egypt, the team’s plane stopped in Beirut, where a crowd gathered threatening to kidnap Pelé unless Santos agreed to play a Lebanese team.
“Fortunately, the police dealt with it firmly, and we flew on to Egypt,” Pelé wrote in his autobiography.
He had become such a hero that, in 1961, to ward off European teams eager to buy his contract rights, the Brazilian government passed a resolution declaring him a nonexportable national treasure.
Soccer Diplomacy
When Pelé was about to retire from Santos in the early 1970s, Henry A. Kissinger, the United States secretary of state at the time, wrote to the Brazilian government asking it to release Pelé to play in the United States as a way to help promote soccer, and Brazil, in America.
By then, two more World Cups, numerous international club competitions and tireless touring by Santos had made Pelé a global celebrity. So it was beyond quixotic when Toye, the Cosmos’ general manager, decided to try to persuade the player universally acclaimed as the world’s best, and highest paid, to join his team.
The Cosmos had been born only a month earlier, in one afternoon, when all the players had gathered in a hotel at Kennedy International Airport to sign an agreement to play for $75 a game in a country where soccer was a minor sport at best.
Toye first met with Pelé and Julio Mazzei, Pelé’s longtime friend and mentor, in February 1971 during a Santos tour in Jamaica. It took dozens more conversations over the next four years, as well as millions of dollars from Warner Communications, the team’s owner, for Pelé to join the Cosmos.
During that period, he became the top scorer in Brazil for the 11th time, Santos won the 10th league championship of his tenure, and Pelé took heavy criticism for retiring from the national team and refusing to play in the 1974 World Cup, in West Germany.
Toye made his last pitch in March 1975 in Brussels. Pelé had retired from Santos the previous October, and two major clubs, Real Madrid of Spain and Juventus of Italy, were each offering a deal worth $15 million, Pelé later recalled.
“Sign for them, and all you can win is a championship,” Toye said he told Pelé. “Sign for me, and you can win a country.”
To further entice him, Warner added a music deal, a marketing deal guaranteeing him 50 percent of any licensing revenue involving his name, and a guarantee to hire his friend Mazzei as an assistant coach. Pelé signed a three-year contract worth, according to various estimates, $2.8 million to $7 million (the latter equivalent to about $40 million today).

He was presented to the news media on June 11, 1975, at the “21” Club in New York. Pandemonium ensued: Fistfights broke out among photographers, and tables collapsed when people stood on them.
The hubbub continued when Pelé played his first North American Soccer League game, on June 15 at Downing Stadium on Randalls Island in the East River. It was a decrepit home; workers hastily painted its dirt patches green because CBS had come to televise the big debut. More than 18,000 fans, triple the previous largest crowd, shouldered their way in to watch.
At every road game during Pelé’s three North American seasons, the Cosmos attracted enormous crowds and a press contingent larger than that of any other New York team, with many journalists representing foreign networks, newspapers and news agencies. Movie and music stars — including Mick Jagger, Robert Redford and Rod Stewart — showed up for home games, lured by Warner executives’ enthusiasm for their hot new talent.
The Cosmos moved to Giants Stadium in Pelé’s final season, 1977, and there, in the Meadowlands, reached the pinnacle of their — and the league’s — popularity. For a home playoff game on Aug. 14, a crowd of 77,691 exceeded not only expectations but also capacity, squeezing into a stadium of 76,000 seats.
That season, the Cosmos had added two more global superstars, Franz Beckenbauer of West Germany and Carlos Alberto of Brazil. (Later, in 1979, the Los Angeles Aztecs lured a third, Johan Cruyff of the Netherlands, to the league.) Soccer seemed poised to enter the American mainstream.
But as it turned out, professional soccer was not yet ready to blossom in America, not even after the Cosmos won the 1977 league championship, in Seattle, or after Pelé’s festive farewell game in October, when he led the “Love!” chant and played one half for the Cosmos and the other half for the visiting team, his beloved Santos.
The league had expanded to 24 teams, from 18, and lacked the financial underpinnings to sustain that many games and that much travel. Nor could other teams match the Cosmos’ spending on top-quality players. The league went out of business after the 1984 season.
But at the grass-roots level, and in schools and colleges, soccer did take off. In 1991, the United States women’s national team won the first women’s World Cup. (The United States has won it three times since.) In 2002, the men’s national team made it to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. And Major League Soccer has established itself as a sturdy successor to the N.A.S.L. (In 2011, the inaugural season of a new minor league with the N.A.S.L. name included a New York Cosmos team, of which Pelé was named honorary president.)
In June 2014, the city of Santos opened a Pelé Museum just before the start of the World Cup, the first held in Brazil since 1950. In a video recorded for the occasion, Pelé said, “It’s a great joy to pass through this world and be able to leave, for future generations, some memories, and to leave a legacy for my country.”
Advocate for Education
Pelé met Rosemeri Cholbi when she was 14 and wooed her for almost eight years before they married early in 1966. They had three children — Kelly Cristina, Edson Cholbi and Jennifer — before divorcing in 1982.
After his divorce, Pelé often appeared in the gossip pages, partying with film stars, musicians and models. He acted in several movies, including John Huston’s “Victory” (1981), with Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone.
It also emerged that he had fathered two daughters out of wedlock. One, Sandra, whom he had refused to acknowledge, later sued for the right to use his surname. She wrote a book, “The Daughter the King Didn’t Want,” which he said greatly embarrassed him. She died of cancer in 2006.
His son, nicknamed Edinho, was a professional goalkeeper for five years before an injury ended his career. He later went to prison on a drug-trafficking conviction.
In 1994, Pelé married Assiria Seixas Lemos, a psychologist and Brazilian gospel singer; their twins, Joshua and Celeste, were born in 1996. They divorced in 2008. In his later years he dated a Brazilian businesswoman, Marcia Aoki, and he married her in 2016.
Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.
His brother Jair Arantes do Nascimento, who was known as Zoca and also played for Santos, died in 2020.
Children always responded warmly to Pelé, and he to them. Neither big nor intimidating, he had a wide, easy smile and a deep, reassuring voice.
“I have never seen another human being who was so willing to take the extra second to embrace or encourage a child,” said Jim Trecker, a longtime soccer executive who was the Cosmos’ public relations director in the Pelé years.

Pelé was sensitive about having dropped out of school (he later earned a high school diploma and a college degree while playing for Santos) and often lamented that so many young Brazilians remained poor and illiterate even as the country had begun to prosper.
Indeed, the day he scored his 1,000th goal, in November 1969 at Maracanã stadium in Rio before more than 200,000 fans, Pelé was mobbed by reporters on the field and used their microphones to dedicate the goal to “the children.” Crying, he made an impromptu speech about the difficulties of Brazil’s children and the need to give them better educational opportunities.
Many journalists interpreted the gesture as grandstanding, but for decades, as if to correct the record, he cited that speech and repeated the sentiment. In July 2007, at a promotional event in New York for a family literacy campaign, he said, “Today, the violence we see in Brazil, the corruption in Brazil, is causing big, big problems. Because, you see, for two generations, the children did not get enough education.”
(On the subject of correcting the record, research for his 2006 biography turned up additional games played, and the authors concluded that the famous 1,000th goal was actually his 1,002nd.)
In London during the 2012 Olympics, Pelé joined a so-called hunger summit meeting convened by the British prime minister at the time, David Cameron, whose stated goal was to reduce by 25 million the number of children stunted by malnutrition before the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Business and Music
Pelé’s own venture into government began in 1995, when he was appointed Brazil’s minister for sport by then-President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Pelé began a crusade to bring accountability to the business operations of Brazil’s professional teams, which were still run largely as gentlemen’s clubs, and to reform rules governing players’ contracts.
In 1998, Pelé’s Law, as it was known, passed. It required clubs to incorporate as taxable for-profit corporations and to publish balance sheets. It required that players be 20 before signing a professional contract and gave them the right of free agency after two years (instead of after age 32).
Many of the provisions were later weakened, and corruption continued, but Pelé said he took pride that the free agency clause had survived.
Business deals gone awry plagued him throughout his life.
He himself said he was often gullible, trusting friends who were less competent than they appeared. In 2001, a company he had helped found a decade earlier, Pelé Sports and Marketing, was accused of taking enormous loans to stage a charity game for Unicef and then not repaying the money when the game failed to happen. Pelé shut down the company; Unicef said there had been no wrongdoing on his part.
While continuing to promote educational programs throughout his life, Pelé also pursued his musical avocation. He was never far from a guitar, and he carried a miniature tape recorder to capture tunes or lyrics as the mood struck him.
He composed dozens of songs that were recorded by Brazilian pop stars, usually without his taking credit.

“I didn’t want the public to make the comparison between Pelé the composer and Pelé the football player,” he told the British newspaper The Guardian in 2006. “That would have been a huge injustice. In football, my talent was a gift from God. Music was just for fun.”
As he grew older, he often spoke of the difficulty of distinguishing between two personas: his real self, and the soccer superstar Pelé. He often referred to Pelé in the third person.
“One of the ways I try to keep perspective on things,” he wrote in his autobiography, “is to remind myself that what people are responding to isn’t me, necessarily; it’s this mythical figure that Pelé has become.”
His face remained familiar around the world long after his retirement from soccer. In 1994, when the World Cup was about to be played in the United States, Pelé sat in Central Park in New York waiting to be interviewed for ABC News. A teenager passed, did a double-take and then ran off; within minutes, people were streaming across the park to see him.
“There were hundreds of them,” Toye wrote in his own memoir. “Seventeen years after he last kicked a ball, this dark-skinned man is sitting in deep, dark shade under the trees — but he is still recognized, and once recognized, never alone in any country on earth.”

So we started overthrowing Iran before Qatar Soccer World Cups. During World Cup Soccer in Qatar we came very close to overthrowing Iran to crown me Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran. Later we overthrew Iran. But Iran has not crowned me Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran. President Raisi of Iran died in process. I brought Raisi to power. They killed him to crown me Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran. But they stole my Empire of Iran. So we will repeatedly overthrow Iran until I am crowned Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran. I also brought Emir of Qatar to power. Now there is European National Soccer Championship in Germany. We must overthrow Germany during European National Soccer Championships. Germany also pretends to be Iran for decades. Iran means land of Aryans. Germany had created Fascist Neo Natzi German Military Regime which killed 50 million Slavs, 50 Million Russian, 50 million Muslims, 6 million Jewish Peoples, and millions of others. Also 80 million Nazi Germany Soldiers died. They were calling Germans Aryans. They were killing people to purify Aryan Race of Germans. Germans killed millions of their own peoples too. China and USA also have killed millions of their own peoples throughout history. Iran means land of Aryans. But it does not have anything to do with Nazi Germany. Iran is not racist. Iran does not Kill people for race. Over 200 million to 800 million people travel through Iran everyday. It is because Iran is center of land transit. So they go through Iran to get to other parts of the world. Iran never kills them. Nazi Germany has nothing to do with Iran. Iran means land of Aryans. I think Aryan means noble. It is probably not related to race. Argentine won World Cup soccer championship in Qatar. Argentine sounds like “Are genes tiny?” Or are the genes are about to be totally exterminated? But that is not real meaning of Argentine. They have a worthless country in South America called Argentine. We don’t want nation of Argentine as new province of Iran. They make sure Argentine and other weak and worthless nations win Soccer World Cups. They cheat in all soccer games. It is true. Now let us get to Germany. European Union has been killing millions of migrants in camps, migrant camps, and death camps everyday. Germany and European Union are killing millions of migrants everyday under pretext of confronting immigration to Europe. America has also built USA Mexico Wall. USA is killing millions of migrants everyday at border of USA and Mexico. But millions of people immigrate through Iran everyday. Iran never kills them. We must bring down Germany, USA, European Union, and others. Overthrow Germany. Germany must become province of Iran. Germany is province of Iran. The capital city is in Iran between Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea. Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran is the Government. The name of unified Empire is Iran. Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran is the Government.
Don’t Kill Iranians, Muslims, Jewish Peoples, Natanzi Peoples, Palestinians, Gaza People, Azerbaijani, Armenians, and others. Natanz is not Natzi. Lift all sanctions on Iran. Iran must build 70000 nuclear bombs. Industrialize Iran at max efficiency and max capacity. Iran must crown me Makan Abazari Shahan Shah Iran.
