Studying poultry farming and although it's not easy, definitely it is interesting. There are many aspects of this field that surely can be improved though (especially the animal welfare part).

Okay, so I found and read this article and learned a couple key things about grouse which I didn't know before:

Researchers in PA discovered something in grouse called a "chromosomal inversion" which is a genetic anomaly which can sometimes present as behavioral changes in birds (such as being super chill around people, although Mister Grouse is especially friendly to the point of almost never leaving his chosen human alone).

Grouse are kinda shit at being birds sometimes. They are not very skilled at flying and eat a lot of bitter/toxic plants in their diet. Historically, grouse had been called "fool hens" by colonizers in the Northeast of the US, refering to the fact that the grouse were small and extremely fearless and chill around humans (this made them stupidly easy to hunt).

Reports of tame grouse are not uncommon nowadays either. According to the article, "They’ve been given names including Gracie, Grousey and Bob".

@todaysbird This isn't quite accurate. The strain of avian influenza that we're seeing, H5N1, is almost never seen in the sorts of songbirds that frequent feeders, and they're not likely to be asymptomatic carriers, either. It primarily infects wild waterfowl (ducks, geese, and swans), and raptors that scavenge the carcasses; these two groups make up the wild birds we've been seeing dying in the current outbreak. And we see a LOT of infections during winter since waterfowl spend this time of year in large social groups which are a great way to transmit diseases. The problem is when migrating waterfowl (to include those just migrating locally during winter) either land in the same field or pasture as domestic birds, or drop feces there while flying overhead.

The other big reason we're seeing such massive mortality of domestic poultry is the fact that most of them are raised in these massive confinement operations where you have thousands of birds jammed in each barn. Of course if one gets sick the rest will, and since you have workers moving from one barn to the next all day, it's possible to spread disease even if you're making the effort to decontaminate between barns. hence why egg prices are way up, because you have millions of stressed-out chickens with depressed immune systems because they're stuck in battery cages succumbing to this stuff.

Here's an article I wrote this past summer that gives more detail on H5N1, how it spreads, and how to protect backyard flocks.

Basically, unless you happen to have backyard poultry and want to be extra careful, you don't need to take down your feeders. However, it is a REALLY good idea to clean them at least weekly with a 1:9 bleach solution to disinfect them, because songbirds are still susceptible to spreading other diseases such as avian pox and salmonellosis. If you see a sick bird at your feeder--crusty or runny eyes or nose, disheveled feathers that ARE NOT due to the bird being mid-molt, general lethargy and "just looks sick and unhappy", then take your feeders in and clean them thoroughly, and keep them inside for at least two weeks.

just so everyone is aware - one of the best ways for bird flu to spread is by encouraging birds to congregate. while the bird flu epidemic from 2022 continues strong into 2023, you should almost always stop feeding birds. this illness can spread between types of birds - you encouraging birds to feed in your backyard could cause the death of the person down the road’s backyard chickens. the disease RARELY spreads to other animals and humans, but it is zoonotic and CAN infect both pets and people, so be cautious and discourage spread of the disease. if you find a deceased bird do not handle it without protective wear and do not let pets interact with dead wildlife. im not going to launch into an outdoor cat spiel but if you have a cat that catches birds regularly, consider stopping them from doing so while this is going on for their & your safety.

saw the sandwich post. i've worked at 2 different big chains in 3 different cities and you have no idea how correct you are. it's ubiquitous. i don't know what it is about poultry that is feminine but it is deemed so which makes you gay if uou order turkey i guess.

i consider myself an expert in sandwich gender science and i still don't know where tuna salad lies on the spectrum. i hesitate even to speculate.

I received this a while ago (sorry, I need to make a post about how September and October regularly murder my ability to socialize) but I've been thinking about the tuna salad question ever since. I've put it to several people I know who are familiar with the sando gender spectrum and got wildly divergent categorizations and theories.

I'm inclined to think that because it has the word "salad" in it, it's automatically gendered towards the femme end of the spectrum, but among the specific subset of Dudes Who Have Sandwich Gender Issues I also know that tuna fishing is considered quite macho because tuna are large fish, and tuna salad is primarily meat and mayo, which as we have discussed is (outside of barbecue sauce, testing pending) the most masculine of condiments.

As an aside, I had a number of people question my thesis that mayo is seen as more masculine than mustard, and my only explanation for this is that a) American mustard isn't that spicy, negating the machismo of eating something painful, and b) mustard is considered European and therefore effeminate. As a man who used to run a blog about mustard, I understand this sentiment may draw ire.

In any case, it does appear that tuna salad is a floating question mark. We're unlikely to ever serve it at the food tent -- we didn't even serve sandwiches with mayo on them this year because we were worried about food poisoning, and when you throw fish into the mix it just becomes more perilous. I leave it to the brave beings who run the delis and sandwich shops across this great nation of ours to continue to engage in the dangerous business of santhropology in the hopes one day our findings might be of value to the world.
