I am about to start my mostly-annual trip to Virginia. Here's a vintage postcard view of the town where I grew up, and where I'll be spending most of my visit. The streetscape is largely unchanged. The buildings in the foreground – east of Middle Street – are gone, but to the west nearly all have been preserved. I can even pick out the Woolworths building. My father met my mother there, when she worked at the candy-and-nut counter after school. I recognize and know all of the steeples by name, and can even work out where the bell tower at Trinity Episcopal would be if it weren't obscured by taller buildings. Today the street is tree-lined and shaded, and the vile confederate statue is gone from the courthouse square. The opposite view from here is of the riverside – the ferry dock and ship yards and downtown Norfolk. And while the trip is about seeing family and visiting friends, I'm sure I'll walk here most days.
