Ok so you're looking at the aftermath of Helene and you're thinking "shit, how would I keep my phone charged? What about my neighbors?" and you have some outdoor space and some cash. Your friendly formerly off grid sheep farmer is here to help.
You need this set up right here:
To that you will need to add:
Y connectors:
The 100aH (amp Hour) deep cycle battery of your choice - lead acid AGM will be cheaper, lithium (LiFePo) is more expensive but lasts much longer.
Finally, you need a small pure sine wave inverter like this one: https://a.co/d/70vRd79
Plug the panels into the Y connectors then into the single wire to run to the charge controller. They are now connected in parallel. Take them outside to a sunny spot and face them south and prop them up at about a 45 degree angle. This isn't perfect but it will be good enough.
Connect your battery and charge controller. Connect the panels to the charge controller. All of the places to do this are labeled and all you need is a Phillips screwdriver. I recommend doing it once in a non-disaster situation so you know you can do it but you'll be fine. Boom, you are getting electricity from the sun!
The inverter draws power even when it's not running so don't leave it hooked up when you're not using it. When someone needs to charge their phone, put those alligator clips on the matching color battery posts, turn the inverter on, and plug in the phone/radio. Voilà! A single 100aH battery is not going to run a bunch of things but it will help keep cell phones charged without using up the gas in your car.
The panels are weatherproof but everything else needs to be protected by the way so you'll need to set this up in a shed or garage or in the house. Lead acid batteries can produce hydrogen gas when being charged but just having one isn't a big risk.
FAQ:
Yes, you can permanently mount the panels to your roof if you own your home etc. They're designed for that!
It is true that places sell "solar generators" - those are a charge controller, battery, and an inverter in one box at a very high price point. When a component goes bad you will be unable to replace the component and must replace the entire $1000 box. They are also not upgradeable or expandable, this is.
You do not have to buy Renogy, I recommend them because they kept me in electricity for the years I was off grid.
You do not have to buy the kit, you can buy the components of it as and when you can afford them!
Remember to keep your battery on a trickle charger.

I was the only person without any luggage. Just a half-eaten cold pastry in my hand. I looked down at his teeth marks in it. I had the urge to listen to a fun song, something by Kylie Minogue or T-ara, but my cell phone battery was drained. This was when Gyu-ho normally handed me a portable charger. And what else? He portioned out my pills and water every morning, passed me his lip balm when my lips were cracked, hung up blackout curtains in my room, scratched my back when it itched, took a shower first so the air in the bathroom was nice and warm. You were the only person who did those things for me, so honestly, Gyu-ho, I actually really care that we’re not together anymore, a lot . . . I continued to gaze out at the scenery outside the window that kept blurring as the train sped toward Seoul, back to the big city that I knew so well. [Love in the Big City by Sang Young Park]

My dear lgbt+ kids,
It's difficult to write anything about the safety of Pride events without either greatly downplaying or exaggerating the potential risks of attending.
This is, at least partly, an online issue: the internet is international but there’s no international standard of safety for lgbt+ people. Someone reading this blog may be from a country where Pride events are generally safe and counterprotests are uncommon (or at least stay small and nonviolent) - but it'd be grossly negligent of me to pretend that this is true for everyone everywhere.
On top of those differences by country or location, there’s also individual safety concerns. Some things may pose a potential risk to certain groups or individuals while other people are unlikely to be negatively affected by them. This includes factors like crowds, loud music, exposure to alcohol or drugs etc. but also factors like the risk of being seen by someone who knows you or the risk of racist or antisemitic attacks etc.
All this is to say: I will happily share some general advice on safety with you – but if you’re trying to make a personal decision regarding the safety of attending Pride (regardless of whether that is “Is it safe for me to attend an event at all?” or just “How can I prepare for an event, so it’s as comfortable and fun as possible for me?”), don’t rely solely on me… or on any one voice you hear online. They may be in a totally different situation than you and inadvertently give you a totally wrong picture of it!
Tip Number One actually ties in with everything I said above: do you have friends (or other trusted people) who have attended Pride in your area before? If so, they may be a more reliable source of advice than a stranger online! Maybe you could even ask them to come along? Having an experienced Pride-goer with you is one of the best ways to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
Other tips and pieces of advice that may be helpful:
Look the location up before you arrive: Which public transport stations are nearby? Where would you go if you need to buy a quick snack? Are there public toilets available? Where’s the nearest hospital or emergency room? Also note your surroundings when you arrive: Where are the exits? Are there any easily recognizable spots you could look for if you get lost? Where will you meet up with your friends or group if you accidentally get separated from them?
Make a plan beforehand and share it with at least one trusted person. Let them know where you are going, who you are going with, how you plan to get there and back home (public transit, your own car, your friend’s car etc.) and when you intend to be back home. Make sure to keep them updated on any changes in your plans and ask them to check in regularly. Also agree on what they should do if they haven’t heard from you at the agreed time.
If you go with a friend or a group, agree beforehand how you’ll handle potential scenarios: what if one person wants to go home and the other(s) want to stay? What if one of you gets separated from the other(s)? (Don’t rely solely on texting/calling each other in such cases (phones can unexpectedly die, get lost, get stolen, have no cell service etc.))
Pride events often take place in summer, so make sure to keep sun/heat safety in mind! Wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, don't overexhaust yourself in hot weather and read up on the symptoms of (and first aid for) heat exhaustion.
If you want to stay safe and alert, your best bet is to stay sober. Don’t drink alcohol or take drugs. (If you do plan to do either of these things, then please keep basic harm reduction measures in mind: don’t drink on an empty stomach, don’t mix alcohol and meds, have at least one person in your group who stays sober, don’t drink & drive etc.)
Make sure to take everything with you that you may need, such as a water bottle, snacks, any necessary medications, face masks, first aid supplies, a portable charger for your phone, emergency contact info (written down in case your phone dies), sunscreen etc.
Learn your rights when it comes to getting stopped by police (Make sure that what you read up on is actually true for your country and is up to date).
Read up on safety precautions for chemical irritation if the use of pepper spray/tear gas is a concern in your area. Same goes for active shooter situations. It may be a worst case scenario but it’s better to read up beforehand if it’s something you worry about.
Don’t engage with counterprotesters. Even if they seem nonviolent, keep in mind that they may just be waiting for you to provoke them, so they can “justify” escalating to violence. Just keep your distance, don’t talk to them, don’t let them bait you into conversation.
Lastly, you want to keep everyone else safe too, so: make sure you don’t accidentally out anyone. Pride is supposed to be a safe space. Don’t take pictures of strangers, don’t upload anything on social media that shows anyone’s face or name if you didn’t get explicit permission to do so.
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

After Dark's Update DevLog
Tumblr media
Hey there! As promised, this update brings new features, some enhancements, and a few bug fixes that I believe will improve your read-gaming experience.
Features & Enhancements
Persistent Memory for Characters: your party's characters will now remember your past conversation topics and answers, making interactions feel more realistic.
Pansexual Main Character: Your main character can now be pansexual, and can now date...
Nonbinary Option for Max: ...nonbinary Max, adding more representation and customization to your gameplay.
Expanded Special Abilities: I've added seven new special abilities, bringing the total to ten. Can you find all of them?
Updated Geographical Details: I've changed some geographical data, including the pandemic's starting location. Additionally, I've revised geographical distances and character speeds for a more authentic experience. You’ll also notice new geographical and environmental details based on real-world U.S. locations!
Improved Conversations: Certain message exchanges with Rain and some conversations with Michael have been revised—now they should sound more natural and relatable.
Enhanced Gameplay Mechanics:
Collectible Card Game (Beta): I've completely revised the collectible card game. It is now in beta! While it's not fully functional yet, you can already...
Card Game with Michael: ...play with Michael, and you'll be able to fight more characters in future updates!
Revised Sun Damage and Sunscreen Mechanics: The sun damage system has been updated, and there’s now a higher skin tone level requiring sunscreen (I'm also working on modifying the sunscreen system to operate on a usage basis rather than by bottles, but this is still TBA).
New and Expanded Mobile Games: The existing mobile game has been expanded, and I’ve added a new one for you to enjoy!
Flavor Text for Name Choices: When choosing certain names, you’ll now see new flavor text to add a bit of fun and more personality to the characters.
Relationship Revisions: I've adjusted the relationship system to enhance characters' interactions and narrative flow.
Optimized Cell Phone Battery Usage: I've also revised the smartphone battery usage, to make it more realistic (and challenging, obviously!).
Bug Fixes
Various Typo Corrections: You know, things like tohse.
Portable Charger Bug: Fixed a bug where the portable charger from Abby's house would not charge at all. Your smartphone should now be powered!
Friendbook Search Bug: Resolved an issue where players could tell Michael he had been searched on Friendbook, even if he hadn't been searched. Now you actually need to search him.
Other Bug Fixes: I've fixed other minor bugs to improve the overall gameplay experience.
Known Issues
Weapon System Bugs: There are still some known bugs in the weapon system that I'm actively working on. I appreciate your patience (please don't use them on me!)
Sunscreen System Update: As mentioned above, I'm still modifying the sunscreen system to function based on uses rather than bottles. Right now it's a bit unrealistic, but I'm working on it!
Thank you for your support and feedback. Whether you have already received it (as patrons) or are waiting for it next month (as free users), I hope you enjoy this update! ♥

Homeless Family In Dire Need
So an update: we are no longer staying in motels. We are, however, the newest people to get into the Encinitas Safe Parking Program, so we have a safe space to park at night with security, bathrooms, and access to a microwave and snacks from 6 to 9:30, plus case management to help us find housing. So this is really good. Last night was our night there, and we'll make it work with some adjustments.
However, after we left this morning to go to Walmart to pick up medication, our car battery died, as did all three of our cell phones. The guy who jumped our battery from AAA said we need to get a new battery as soon as possible, which is around $200, and we need a portable charger so that if an emergency strikes we can still charge our phones.
We are also trying to get a van, which will give all three of us some breathing room and give us more space to store clothing, blankets and cat supplies. Most of the ones I've seen on Craiglist and Facebook are around $1,500.
I'm setting the goal at $1,750 so I can get the battery and charger now and work on saving up for the van later. Any help or reblogs are greatly appreciated.
I also have Ca$happ and Venm0 as well. Just message me for the info.

What to Do If You Get Lost in the Wild
Even in the age of smartphones and GPS, stories of hikers getting lost in the wilderness still regularly appear in the news. How do people get lost even when carrying their devices, and what should you do if you ever find yourself in that situation? To answer those questions, I called up Creek Stewart, a wilderness survival expert and instructor and a longtime friend of AoM. Creek is the author of numerous books on wilderness survival and has been the host of several Weather Channel shows on the subject, including S.O.S.: How to Survive. Besides his over two decades of survival experience, Creek told me that hosting S.O.S. gave him a unique perspective on how people get lost in the wilderness and what separates those who survive and get rescued quickly from those who flounder. When he hosted the show, he interviewed dozens of folks who had gotten lost in the wild, often in popular national parks filled with other people. Below Creek shares his insights on how anyone can become disoriented when traversing the great outdoors and, more importantly, how to stay safe if it happens to you. Pre-Trip Preparation: How to Ensure Your Quick Rescue in the Event You Get Lost Creek says there are three things you can do before your trip that, should you manage to get lost during it, will dramatically increase your chances of a quick rescue and a safe return: 1. Tell people where you’re going and when to expect you back. Do this even if you’re going on a simple day hike near your home. 2. Ensure your phone is fully charged and bring a power bank. If you plan on using a digital app/map to guide your hike, you’ll of course want to make sure your phone is fully charged and has a backup power source as well. A phone is of no use if it doesn’t have power. People get lost, their phones die, and they can’t figure out where they are and how to get back on track. A dead phone not only contributes to getting lost, but prevents a quick rescue as well. Creek told me the one thing that all the people who had a slow rescue had in common was that they went out into the wild without a fully charged phone and without a way to power it back up. “The people who got found quickly typically had a fully charged phone, so when they got lost, they could make a call or at least put out a distress signal with GPS,” he told me. If you’re looking for a power bank for outdoor excursions, I like and use the S.A.B.A.N.I. Portable Charger 35000mAh Power Bank. You can charge your iPhone up to five times with this power bank. 3. Consider carrying a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). Creek recommends buying a PLB or satellite communicator. While they’re pricey and require a subscription, they will allow you to send a distress signal and share your GPS location even when you don’t have cell service. Garmin makes two satellite communicators: * Garmin inReach Messenger Handheld Satellite Communicator. This device is also a Personal Locator Beacon, and it works with your smartphone, so you can text even when you don’t have cell service. * Garmin inReach Mini 2. It allows you to text and also has maps and weather forecasts. It’s more expensive than the original inReach due to those additional features. Doing those three things before you leave for your trip will ensure you get found within 24 hours of getting lost in the wild. In addition to doing those three things, Creek also recommends that you dress appropriately for the climate and bring some essential gear for any wilderness outing, even a short day hike. Pack the essentials we list here. Having those things on you in the event you get lost will help you stay safe and comfortable in the outdoors while you’re waiting to be found. The Psychology of Getting Lost If you stay on marked trails when you’re out in nature, your risk of getting lost is very low. Before you begin a hike, download an offline map on your phone in case you don’t have cell service. Again, make sure you have a power charger. And carry a paper map as a backup, too.  According to… http://dlvr.it/TCRdLG

sometimes I go out of my way for people and I’m like what the fuck am I doing this?
I’ve given out my portable charger to passengers multiple times because I’m stupid and sympathetic to their phone not being charged and them freaking out about it because our aircraft does not have chargers
sometimes I’ll guide foreigners to their gates or even let them use my cell phone to call their relatives and yeah, I’m definitely not being paid for that
