A Flying Porsche

On the back of the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring is a famous jump where truly powerful and fast cars can really take off. Here is one such, a Porsche 908 during the 1000km. race on May 19, 1968. This 908 wa being driven by Jo Siffert and Vic Elford. They would be victorious in this famous race, winning over another works-entered Porsche, a 907 with a 2.2 liter motor, by just over three minutes.…

Porsche 914/8, 1969. Built at the instigation of Ferdinand Piëch and fitted with a racing-spec 908 Flat-8 engine, which produced a 350hp. Two prototypes were built, the second car (with an engine detuned to 300hp) was given to Ferry Porsche for his 60th birthday (b&w pic)

The last triumph came in 1969, with Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver scoring one of the greatest race victories ever, in the year that Porsche’s 917 debuted: Ickx led Hans Hermann’s Porsche 908 across the finish line, roughly 120m ahead of the German after 372 laps. A proper photo finish, this time. Amazingly, he was driving the same chassis that had won the race the year before. (He also protested the Le Mans start after the death of Porsche privateer John Woolfe, who crashed at Maison Blanche and died because he wasn’t wearing a seat-belt.
