My Favourites of 2020
Everyone seems to love an end-of-year best-of post (myself included), so here we go. Behold, the best of the best in a year full of trash.
Clothing
J. Crew underwire 90s swimsuit: I bought it in both black & red and I can’t wait to wear them somewhere other than my house one day.
UNIQLO blouse: so soft and perfect fitting.
High waisted leggings from Aerie. I can’t put in a link because they’re always changing the ones they sell, but the softest/best ones are the ones that are 88% Nylon, 12% Elastane.
This Zella Crop Hoodie from Nordstrom that I pretty much wore every other day since June.
Babaton Contour V-Neck Bodysuit (so far I have it in two colours, clay & scarab), they’re amazing. They’re like better quality versions of the old American Apparel bodysuits.
TV & Movies
The Staircase documentary series
This one scene from The Good Place
Parasite
The most recent season of Shrill
The Hillary documentary
The first season of Dave
Awkwafina is Nora From Queens
Always Be My Maybe
Beauty Products
OUAI Wave Spray - such a low maintenance way to style your hair when it’s damp.
Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion - incredible for blemishes that are in the early stages.
Antihistamine Eye Drops - annihilated my itchy eye problem.
Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Salicylic Acid Pore Refining Pads - I went through the entire container, it really does wonders for your skin.
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare All-In-One Cleanser With Toner - again, just amazing on my skin.
Scalp Massager - I feel rich when I use it.
Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve - my saving grace this winter.
Luna Sleeping Night Oil from Sunday Riley - makes me look 18, in my opinion.

Caught in the Middle (Steve Harrington x Reader x Billy Hargrove) Ch 4
Links: Ch 1 Ch 2 Ch 3 Ch 4 Ch 5 Ch 6 Ch 7
_____________________________________________________
Ch 4 .:A Date?:.
Sunlight streamed in through your window, ribbons of light cascading across your bed sheets. You could hear the faint sound of birds chirping as the morning greeted you.
And you felt like complete and utter shit.
You groaned, your head pounding, as you tried to block out some of the light with your pillow. You'd gotten home last night at 2:00 on the dot, feeling fine. In fact, you even caught up on some homework before you went to sleep. Now you just felt like you'd been hit by a truck.
You looked over at the time, reluctantly getting out of bed when you saw how late in the morning it was. The kids were biking over in half an hour to go to the mall and you looked like hell.
You padded down the hallway, mustering up a weak laugh when you saw your brother passed out in his room, knowing he'd probably wake up to the same fate as you.
As you made your way downstairs the smell of breakfast food made your stomach rumble on instinct. You were 'hydrated' plenty last night, but there wasn't much actual food. Your eyes lit up as you rounded the corner and saw your dad plating up some eggs, bacon, and pancakes. He grinned as he saw you, setting the plate down on the table in front of you.
“And how is my daughter doing this fine morning?” he asked, already knowing the answer.
“Swell, you said sarcastically.
He laughed, walking over to the cabinet to get you some Tylenol and a glass of water.
“Trust me, I know the feeling,” he said, “I can't really say anything on this one, I'd be lying if I said I haven't done worse when I was your age. That hangover is punishment enough. Just drink water throughout the day, and go on and eat something greasy while you're at the mall too. But get your blood sugar up right now, I don't want you back in that car until your head's clear, you understand?”
“Will do,” you said, already stuffing your face, “Thanks, dad.”
“You're welcome,” he smiled, “Love you, drive safe.”
“Love you too,” you said through a mouthful of bacon.
As he retreated back into his office you savored the taste of the feast he made for you. You smiled fondly as you did. Your dad didn't really cook until he became a single parent. When he took on the full responsibility of raising you and your brother, he tried his best to fill your mom's role, following the old recipe books she'd left behind. His first attempts were a general health hazard, but as time went on he actually turned out to be a great cook.
The sudden ringing of bicycle bells outside your house made you scarf down the rest of your plate, snatching your car keys off the table.
You opened the front door to see the whole gang waiting for you.
“I swear, the only time you guys are on time for anything is when you're leeching off of me,” you said, unlocking the car and leaving them to figure out the seating.
“You know us so well,” Dustin said, hopping into the shotgun seat before anyone else could take it.
“I forgot to ask earlier, but how was that summer camp you went to, Dustin?” you asked, turning on the engine.
“It was so cool,” he beamed, “Our counselor taught us how to make all kinds of inventions. I made a self-nailing hammer, a wind powered clock, and a radio tower so I can talk to my girlfriend whenever I want since her parents monitor her phone calls.”
“Girlfriend?” you turned to look at him. He smiled back at you, bright as anything.
“Yeah, we were surprised too,” Max said from the back.
“Although we're not sure she actually exists,” Mike chimed in, “Apparently she's as hot as Phoebe Cates.”
“Hotter than Phoebe Cates,” Dustin corrected, “And she's a genius too.”
“Riiight,” Lucas said.
“Well I think she sounds great, Dusty,” you said, “It's pretty romantic you built that radio tower just to talk to her.”
“It's the strongest communications network in Hawkins across 150 channels,” he said proudly.
“Well, that's certainly impressive,” you grinned, ruffling his hair.
Soon you pulled up to one of the many entrances to the mall, stopping at the curb.
“Well, this is your stop, guys,” you said, “What are you gonna see?”
“The Stuff,” Mike said excitedly.
“Isn't that rated R?” you questioned, a brow raised.
All of them looked at each other, slightly panicked.
“Well, we'll see you later, (Y/n)!” Lucas said, flinging open the back door and getting out as fast as he could. Everyone else quickly fled after him, running towards the theater. You shook your head. They got themselves into a lot of shenanigans, but admittedly you were the one instigating it most of the time when you were younger, even if you were the babysitter.
However, as soon as the kids left for the movie you were painfully reminded of the throbbing headache you had. You groaned as one of the strobe lights around the movie theater glared in your face, not helping matters in the slightest.
You knew eating a bunch of greasy food technically didn't do anything for a hangover, but it sure made you feel a hell of a lot better emotionally. With that in mind you decided to walk over to the Burger Chef located inside the mall for a little pick me up.
Luckily for you there wasn't much of a line. Only a few people were scattered around the seating area at the food court. You were looking over the menu hanging on the wall when a familiar voice broke your train of thought.
“(Y/n)?”
You looked around at the sound of your name to see Steve looking back at you, just as surprised.
“Hey,” you said. You took a moment to look over him. He looked just as awful as you did, if you were honest. The deep-set bags under his tired eyes aged him an eternity, and he looked a bit green as well.
“You too, huh?” You bit back a grin as you gave him a short laugh through your nose.
“Yeah,” he admitted, “In hind sight I probably shouldn't have mixed liquors, but hey, there's nothing I can do about it now. Figured some fries might help.”
“They always do,” you said, “What are you doing here, anyways? Aren't you on your shift at Scoops?” You noticed he was still in his work uniform.
“Lunch break,” he explained, “I don't really have long, but we can grab a table if you want.”
“I'd like that,” you smiled.
Steve was a little surprised at his own forwardness. Apparently he was hungover enough to not overthink everything that came out of his mouth. However he was even even more surprised at you agreeing to sit down with him. He didn't know why his brain was making such a big deal out of this; you ate lunch with him every day and hung out together all the time, but then again that was also including a group of other people. You and Steve had never really spent time together when it was just the two of you, except for when you iced his busted face after the basketball stunt, which hardly counted as a first date.
He felt uncharacteristically nervous as he slid into the booth next to you. A year ago he would have been pulling out all the stops to make you his, but now he just wasn't so sure anymore. He was never afraid of rejection before, but when he thought of you as the one rejecting him he figured it would be better to not say anything at all.
'Get yourself together,' Steve thought to himself, 'It's just lunch with a friend. Friends do that!'
“Penny for your thoughts, Popeye?” you said, flicking the fabric of his sailor hat.
“Huh?” Steve said, snapping out of it, “Oh, nothing, just, uh. . .” he quickly picked up a menu, hoping to cover the majority of his reddening face with it, “Looking at the XXL Supreme. 2Lb beef patty with bbq sauce, ranch, fried pickles, beer cheese and. . . yeah, that sounds pretty gross.”
“I'll probably stick to a regular burger,” you laughed, glancing at the menu over his shoulder.
You were so close he could feel the heat coming off your body and smell the sweet scent of your perfume. He scolded himself for being so weak, forcing himself to concentrate only on the food.
Right at that moment a waiter strolled up to you, writing pad in hand.
“Hi. Welcome to Burger Chef,” he said, sounding just as dead inside as he looked, “How may I serve you today?”
“A double patty melt with cheddar,” Steve said, “And a coke, please.”
“I'm trying to decide between-” you stopped yourself as you looked up, staring at the waiter. You thought he looked familiar and it was then that you realized he was one of the guys that bullied your brother in middle school. Your eyes narrowed as you recalled how he and his friends cut the strings on Kyle's guitar when he brought it to school one day.
You saw a flash of recognition in his eyes and your lips curved upwards.
“The classic burger, simple,” you said, the fakest smile you could muster on your face, “But on a sesame bun instead of the brioche, no mayo, extra mustard, add caramelized onions and extra cheese, and don't forget the pickles. If you could add shredded lettuce instead of the whole leaf that'd be great. Oh, and a Neapolitan shake with chocolate syrup and no whipped cream.”
“We don't have a Neapolitan shake,” he said irritably and slightly panicked, trying to write everything down.
“Well I heard in your commercial if you just ask, an employee would be happy to mix any of the milkshake flavors together,” you said, your smirk widening. What could you say? Being a bitch was fun sometimes- especially when the person on the receiving end was a total dickhead.
“Coming right up,” the waiter said through his teeth.
Steve looked between the two of you before the waiter stormed off to the kitchen window, slamming his hand down on the bell with more force than necessary.
“So, what'd he do?” Steve chuckled.
“Bullied my brother really bad in school,” you said, “What goes around comes around, though. In a few years Kyle will be off to LA to start touring with his band and this guy will still be here covered in fry grease wearing a burger shaped hat.”
“Well I hope that's not my fate,” Steve said, only half joking as he took his uniform hat off, twirling it in his hands.
You could tell even though he tried to hide behind the humor it was something he really was concerned about.
“Hey, don't worry about it,” you said, nudging his shoulder lightly, “You're not an asshole. . . anymore.”
You managed to get a laugh out of him at the end and you smiled, glad you were at least able to cheer him up some.
“Seriously, though, it's fine to not know what you want to do with your life yet,” you said, “Hell, I know grown ass men who still don't know what they're doing. You don't have to go to some fancy college to do something great.”
Steve looked at you, thinking over your words. He thought it was crazy how you were his age but you were so much more mature and optimistic than he was. The way you thought was unlike anyone he's met before in Hawkins, and it only further intensified his wanting to get to know you.
“Thanks, (Y/n),” he smiled.
Meanwhile, your little crew of gremlins had finished their film, now making their way to the food court for lunch.
“What do you think The Stuff tastes like?” Lucas asked to no one in particular.
“I bet it's like Betty Crocker frosting,” Dustin said dreamily.
“Um can we not talk about how sentient parasitic goo tastes? Because we're literally about to go eat,” Max said.
Suddenly Dustin stopped in his tracks, making Will run into his back.
“Dustin, what the hell?” Mike said, screeching to a halt before he could collide with Will.
“No way,” Dustin said, staring far off some place the others couldn't see.
“What's wrong?” El asked, confused.
Dustin pulled his friends behind the shrubbery next to the fountain, ducking in the cover as he peeked his head out slightly.
“They're on a date!” Dustin said, a little too loudly. He ignored the stares he got from passersby as he continued to watch you and Steve laugh over your burgers in your shared booth.
“(Y/n) and Steve?” Mike said, “I thought he was still hung up over Nancy breaking up with him.”
“Well clearly the man's moved on,” Lucas said.
Max rolled her eyes, hitting him on the arm.
“Ow!” Lucas exclaimed, turning to her, “What was that for?”
“Just because a guy and a girl are hanging out doesn't mean it's a 'date',” she pointed out, “Maybe they're just good friends. I've seen them around each other a lot at school.”
“I think he finally worked up the courage to ask her out for real,” Dustin started theorizing, ignoring Max completely.
“What do you mean for real?” Will asked.
“It's so obvious he's into her but he's scared of striking out,” Dustin said, “That whole Nancy situation really struck a blow to his self confidence.”
Mike tried to get a better look at what you two were doing, leaning over El's shoulder and squinting at the burger place. Suddenly his footing slipped from under him as he accidentally took a step on the wet tile near the fountain and fell on his ass into a bush.
“Shit!”
You and Steve stopped eating your burgers and turned around at the sudden noise, but saw nothing but a ruffle in the plants nearby.
“That was weird,” you said, looking around.
“Yeah,” Steve said, “Well, it's bear season, you never know when they'll sneak up on you.”
You laughed at that, the sound making Steve's heart flutter. He loved your laugh, even more so when he knew he was the cause of it.
Suddenly Steve remembered his shift was probably starting, his lunch break was less than an hour long.
“Shit, I should've been back ten minutes ago,” Steve said, looking down at his watch, “My shift already started.”
“Oh, sorry,” you said, “I didn't mean for this to go on for so long.”
Steve looked surprised, shaking his head vigorously.
“No, no, I liked it,” he said, not fully registering how the sentence sounded out loud until your cheeks flushed.
“I-I mean-”
“I get it,” you laughed softly, “I liked it too.”
Steve felt like his heart was just shot through with cupid's arrow as you smiled up at him and offered to walk him back to Scoops. He hadn't felt this way since Nancy. After she broke his heart he was convinced he would never get over her, but now you were here, occupying all the free space in his mind despite only knowing you for a short while. What the hell was going on with him?
His mental debate came to an unceremonious stop when he realized you were already in front of the ice cream shop.
Steve turned to you and did his best to sound indifferent. He had a really good time, but he didn't know if you felt the same way.
“Well, I better get back to it,” he said, clearing his throat awkwardly, “You know, suit up, sling ice cream, appease the masses-”
“We should do this again sometime,” you said, effectively flipping the 'off' switch on his rambling.
Steve seemed to freeze in this plane of existence, staring at you with wide eyes.
“Yeah! I mean, that's what I was gonna ask you, but I didn't know if you wanted to, and. . .” he trailed off, kicking himself again.
'When you talk you just make it worse,' he mentally scolded himself.
You laughed a bit at his flushed face.
'Adorable,' you thought. For being the former king of Hawkins High, he was still a giant dork.
“Well I'll definitely see you around this time, then,” you smiled, reminded of your first day back. Things were different between you two now, but that wasn't a bad thing at all.
You walked out of Scoops Ahoy feeling lighter, a smile on your face and your headache long forgotten. With your disastrous dating history, maybe Steve Harrington was the kind of guy who could be good for you right now.
The very thought made you feel giddy inside, but as you said yourself before, life had a funny way of changing your plans completely.

McDonald’s experiments with Artificial Intelligence Technology- Annie Hines
Customer and market demands are constantly changing. Therefore, companies are constantly trying to become more efficient and cost-effective to keep up with customer’s rising expectations. Companies turn to the newest and most innovative technologies to help them meet their goals, while also meeting rising customer expectations. The fast-food chain industry has begun to incorporate artificial intelligence technology into their operations to keep up with the competition of app-based food delivery systems. McDonald’s hopes this new technology will attract customers to return to drive-throughs, as 65% of their sales are from drive-throughs.
In this industry, McDonalds is the market leader for artificial intelligence technology. McDonalds acquired “Dynamic Yield,” a technology allowing customers to have a real time drive-through experience without employees, for $300 million. This technology programs the drive-through menus to update the offerings based on a combination of factors, such as time of day, weather, or trending items. For example, if it was 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the technology would tell the menu to promote McFlurry’s. Similarly, in the morning, the menu would promote their breakfast items. In addition, McDonald’s purchased “Apprente,” a voice ordering technology start-up, that could understand and take people’s orders in drive-throughs.
This technology would replace many minimum-wage jobs but create jobs for data scientists and engineers. The threat of replacing hundreds of thousands of minimum-wage workers across McDonald’s around the United States is a main concern. The concern of drive-throughs being less personable due to a robot taking your order instead of a person is not as critical as the majority of customers do not expect a high level of customer service at a drive-through. Customers go to drive-throughs to not have to get out of the car to be more efficient and to not have to see people. Therefore, McDonald’s should think about the repercussions of firing hundreds of thousands of workers due to the artificial intelligence technology.
While there hasn’t been an industry wide artificial intelligence implementation yet, other smaller drive-through chains have also experimented with artificial intelligence technology. In Denver, two fast food chains, Good Times Burger and Frozen Custard, have used an artificial intelligence platform from Valyant AI. This technology also replaces employees at drive-throughs by taking orders based on its small vocabulary set and keywords. A restaurant reservation service, SevenRooms, has partnered with Amazon to use Alexa to remind workers of special requests from guests or to explain how to do certain skills in the kitchen. While these smaller chains have been experimenting with artificial intelligence technology, McDonald’s success with the technology could lead to an industry wide implementation, as McDonald’s makes up 17% of the fast food chain industry alone.
The goal of the use of artificial intelligence technology in drive-throughs is to make the process more efficient. Seconds count when people are making decisions on whether to go through a drive-through. If a line is too long, potential customers will just keep driving and go to the next one. Therefore, McDonald’s is hoping the technology will keep the line moving by reducing bottlenecks and improving speed. If it makes the overall process more efficient, and therefore the lines are kept shorter, more customers will hopefully be enticed to go to drive-throughs.
All though food delivery systems are stealing fast food chain customers, drive-throughs are still relevant. With the recent chicken sandwich twitter war, mainly between Popeyes and Chick Fil A, both stores had employees working overtime to keep up with demand for their chicken sandwiches. The lines always seem to be long at Chick Fil A, but this twitter war drove many customers to try Popeyes rivalry sandwich. Popeyes demand soared and they had a national shortage of chicken sandwiches, which shows that there is still the demand for drive-throughs. Although the significant increase of sales was due to the social media campaign, people were still willing to get in their car and drive to the fast food chain. Therefore, if these fast food chains took advantage of the artificial intelligence technology and made the drive-through experience even more efficient for customers, the demand could remain competitive, even against the food app delivery companies.

WE ALL HAVE TO GROW UP SOMETIME
Traci contacted me last week to ask if I’d take Quinn’s senior pictures. My immediate response was a mixed bag of being unqualified to take these pictures and internal weeping because how is it possible that this kid is graduating high school?!? I swallowed those feelings and struck a deal with Traci. I would take the pictures for free, edit them and then give them a folder of images to choose and have prints made. She countered the deal with an okay, but we’re going to this fancy ten course dinner place afterwards. We are good at negotiations.
They met me in Tulsa where I had traveled to visit with Mom and we roamed around the Gathering Place while I snapped pictures of Quinn. I took well over three hundred pictures and his eyes were closed in probably two hundred and fifty of them. There was a lot to catch up on since we hadn’t spent time together in almost a year. We swapped life stories while Quinn mugged for the camera. Occasionally, Traci and I would give each other a side eye before making fun of his duck face pose. Yes…duck face is not just for the females and a more experienced portrait photographer would have been able to give this lanky man child better things to do with his face and hands. Even if I was an experienced portrait photographer, I would have been distracted by how it was possible that this human was mostly all grown up.
I have so many stories of this person as a small human. Chris and I were right on the other side of the door to his delivery room and were some of the first people to meet him on his first day on this planet. I have such a clear memory of Traci’s Chris holding this bundled newborn up for us all to witness. Quinn’s head was perfectly rounded and made for those little knitted baby caps. He looked back at us with one squinty eye, like Popeye. Chris was Quinn’s manny from the time he was a tiny baby until we moved to Kansas City. On the Saturday mornings when Chris was working, I’d run errands and then grab breakfast or lunch to take over to Traci’s house. Then Chris and I would watch Quinn poke food into his mouth for over an hour or we’d take him to the Bass Pro Shop to see ‘catfish’. We watched countless hours of Cars and Finding Nemo. We spent every Halloween at their place handing out candy to what felt like thousands of kids or walking the neighborhood trick-or-treating. Tantrums, laughs, snotty noses, I’ve experienced them all.
Traci had made reservations at FarmBar, a place that does a ten course tasting menu, the kind of place I wouldn’t ever think to take a teenager. But Quinn is pretty culinarily adventurous and willing tried each dish that was placed in front of us. There was no need to prod or beg him to just try a bite. The dinner was good, some dishes better than others, but the thing that made this dinner the best was Quinn’s commentary on all of the dishes. If Chris left any kind of imprint on this kid, it was his dry wit and sense of humor. The Kanpachi crudo of shiso ganita and charred onion was described as a “vegetable snow cone” which was not far from the truth. We were five or six courses in before Quinn declared that he hadn’t even used his napkin yet and while waiting on course six, he said “they’re probably back there whipping up one mushroom for the four of us.” And we laughed so dang much.
Quinn has a job and a girlfriend. He’s taking college courses and plans on going to nursing school, like his parents. He’s debating between Japan and Mexico for his senior trip. I told him to pick Japan. He still has that squinty brown eye, though his other eye is hazel. He is taller than all of us. He has Chris’s sense of humor and skill for delivering the perfectly timed, sarcastically dry line.
I bet that skill gets him farther than he can even imagine.

The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Is Here to Save America
One day in 2017, during the brunch rush at Sweet Dixie Kitchen—a small Southern California restaurant that the Orange County Register once dubbed “Long Beach’s Church of Southern Breakfast”—a customer was astonished to see a member of the restaurant’s staff duck into the kitchen bearing two large orders of Popeyes fried chicken. “I wanted to believe that this was just a snack for the workers, but alas it was not,” the patron, who goes by Tyler H. on Yelp, wrote, in an account of the meal. The chicken was, instead, destined for plates of the restaurant’s thirteen-dollar entrée of chicken and waffles. When Tyler asked a server for more detail on how the dish was prepared, his suspicions were confirmed: the restaurant readily owned up to outsourcing its chicken-frying to the national chain. Kim Sanchez, the owner of Sweet Dixie Kitchen—who happened to be the Popeyes smuggler Tyler had spotted—doubled down on her decision in a response appended to Tyler’s Yelp post. “We PROUDLY SERVE Popeyes spicy tenders,” she wrote, noting that her culinary philosophy is all about sourcing ingredients from the best purveyors, whether it’s tracking down jam from an artisan in Alabama, finding fresh vegetables at the farmer’s market, or placing a takeout order for America’s best fast-food fried chicken.
After a modest media firestorm and a tsunami of jubilant consumer outrage (including, inevitably, a new Twitter hashtag, #popeyesgate), Sweet Dixie Kitchen took its Popeyes chicken off the menu, and for the past couple of years the restaurant has more or less chugged along without. That is, until earlier this month, when, for two full days, it was the only place in the world a person could get Popeyes’ newest menu item, a fried-chicken sandwich. This time, at least, the chicken was served with permission: the fast-food brand partnered with Sanchez, capitalizing on the compelling oddness of #popeyesgate. At Popeyes locations in Orange County, stores hung posters in the windows that read “Chicken Sandwich not available here, yet” and directed impatient sandwich-seekers to Sweet Dixie Kitchen. Sanchez herself starred in a peppy advertisement for the sandwich, in which she chats about her previous brush with notoriety and crouches to add the trademark symbol to a Popeyes logo drawn on the restaurant’s outdoor chalkboard.
During the throes of #popeyesgate, I found myself surprisingly sympathetic to Sanchez’s position. It’s not that I was onboard with the idea of buying one restaurant’s food to sell at another, or marking up a four-dollar combo some three hundred per cent on the secondary market merely by putting it on a stoneware plate and throwing in a waffle. But it was hard for me to find fault with Sanchez’s underlying aesthetic principle: Popeyes fried chicken is fantastic. The meat is flavorful and juicy, encased in a spiky, golden sea urchin of batter—surprisingly light, uncommonly crispy. Fried chicken is one of the world’s great culinary syntheses, found in cultures and kitchens on every patch of the planet: bird, flour, fat. American fried chicken, whose recipe was cultivated by enslaved Africans in the South, is, at its best, a food of transcendent deliciousness, an object of near holiness. There is almost certainly better fried chicken in the world than the version found at Popeyes, but only marginally so—and, in most of the forty-nine states where Popeyes locations can be found, it’s unlikely that whatever’s better is more convenient or reliable. If you were going to try to pass off another restaurant’s fried chicken as your own, and you had a Popeyes nearby—well, you could do a whole lot worse.

Secret Popeyes Menu Items You Have to Try at Least Once
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen may have roots down South, but almost 50 years after the chain was founded, it's become a staple for Americans of all stripes. Today its signature orange logo is a beacon for fried food lovers everywhere, promising consistently well-executed comfort food with Cajun flavors.
But true Popeyes fanatics know that there's more to the menu than meets the eye. That's right, just like In-N-Out and McDonald's, the New Orleans chain has a secret menu. Unlike its fast-food counterparts, Popeyes secret menu is less about providing a secret password and more about asking nicely and putting in some DIY effort.
So, with the caveat that results may vary, read on to uncover all the off-the-grid items you can order at the popular joint. And for more on the latest fast-food trends, don't miss 6 Most Anticipated Fast-Food Menu Items Launching This Year.
Cajun Gravy Fries
Popeyes Cajun Fries are already the stuff of legends, but order the crispy spuds with the chain's signature house-made gravy, and you're on your way to poutine—minus the cheese. In fact, Popeyes did once offer actual cajun poutine, complete with gravy and cheese curds, but since its removal from the menu, fans have started DIY-ing the dish this way.
Chicken Ranch Sandwich
We're not reinventing the wheel in any huge way here—the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich is already a well-known fast-food delicacy. But after seeing rumors of this secret menu version on the internet and trying it myself, I'm hooked. Get your chicken sandwich with a side of ranch, then drizzle it over the chicken. The result? Something I didn't know was possible: an upgrade to Popeyes' signature dish.
Chicken Biscuit
Yes, you can have fried chicken for breakfast. With a little bit of coaxing, I was able to get Popeyes to serve me their tenders with a side of biscuits. I then combined the two and made this delicious secret-menu offering well known among the chain's fanatics.
Sweet & Spicy Red Beans and Rice
The most pleasant surprise on the secret menu is this reimagination of Popeyes classic red beans and rice. Simply order the side with two packets of honey and one packet of hot sauce (adjust to your taste preference), pour them in, mix, and enjoy the flavorful combo.
Cinnamon Sugar Biscuit
While this one is tricky to order, the sweet results are worth it. Simply get an order of biscuits, and ask if it's possible to coat them in the cinnamon sugar Popeyes usually reserves for their apple pies. It's a fairly simple combo but the flavor you'll end up with is incredible.
Cajun Sprinkle
By far the easiest order on the secret menu, this addicting Cajun sprinkle is good on literally everything Popeyes serves. When you're checking out, just ask the cashier to throw a few packets of Cajun Sparkle in your bag—the spice is a behind-the-counter addition, available upon request only. Enjoy it on everything from fries to chicken wings.

3 things I miss about my homestate of South Carolina:
Actual Hardee's restaurants. Though I'm still grateful for Carl's Jr at least having a small list of the breakfast menu items. I love the biscuits and gravy!
Zaxby's. Church's and Popeye's aren't at all the same. Personally I find their chicken to be lackluster in comparison to Zaxby's. Sonic has boneless wings that are somewhat comparable imo and I've not tried Wingstop(though i really want to), but something about Zaxby's just has all of the other chicken places beat.
The guy that would set up outside the Bi-Fast gas station that was in front of my old neighborhood and sell boiled peanuts. His name was Ken and he had the BEST boiled peanuts imo. He also practically watched my brother and I grow up since he was good friends with my dad and we stopped by quite often to get peanuts and chat. I even had Brandon meet him once. It was great. I miss his boiled peanuts...

We all know what fried chicken is and I’m about to potentially say something controversial: I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but where I am KFC isn’t that good. They used to be good but idk something happened with the management of the spots around here and it just fell off the deep end. Popeye’s is where it’s at. At least in my area.
Just realizing the world doesn’t know that sweet potatoes are... sweet.
Like it’s literally in the name. It’s written on the box. And you’re surprised they made it into a desert?
Anyway, it’s basically like a pie but with no crust, you put brown sugar in/on the sweet potatoes, and my mom covers it with a layer of mini marshmallows, and you bake it.
Frankly it’s way too much for me and I don’t like sweet potato anyway, but it’s basically a thanksgiving staple, which means it’s a popular food that no one wants to bother making more than once a year cause it’s way more trouble than it’s worth.
Peaches are goon in theory but o don’t trust fruit that grows hair
Biscuits and grace is an easy one to explain but it’s hard to find good ones. It’s usually sausage gravy, especially it’ll it’s served for breakfast (which is how I always had it) and usually those called biscuits that you have to like snack on the counter and they pop open and it’s awful. You COULD hand-make them but I don’t trust myself with bread.
But yeah it’s easy to maje, hard to master. It tastes so good but the regret is instant usually. Only time I could ever eat it without my stomach hurting was at the dining hall of a community college, where it was the cheapest thing on the breakfast menu and I’d always get a full order (which was huge) and split it with a friend in the morning before classes. Don’t know what they did differently but I could live off that till the day I die.
Sweet iced tea by now the whole internet should know about because of how much southerners get kissy over it but here’s the gist: make hot tea, sweeten hot tea within an inch of its life, put in the fridge, drink cold.
It’s like the sugary iced coffee of the tea world. So you’d think I’d like it seeing as hot coffee is an acidic sour nightmare I do my best to avoid unless I’m buying it fresh from somewhere that doesn’t use the cheap shot brand my dad buys, BUT! Contrary to popular belief I much prefer hot, bitter tea. Sweetened tea just has a weird taste to me, regardless of brand or sweetening method. My preferred teas are black teas with orange peel in them or green tea with lemon. (Unfortunately my favorite green tea variety seems to have disappeared, it’s still on the brand website but I can never find it in stores)
Key lime pie is just weird. My mom loves it, I’m not a fan. More of a texture thing than a taste. It’s goo in a pie crust.
Corn bread is a bread made from cornmeal. A little sweet, not a gesture everyone likes. It’s closer in texture to cake than bread really. I don’t see what the hype is about.
Never had most of the others. Collard greens are just a leafy green, I think they cook them in water? Or maybe just eat them as like salad. I don’t know. I’m perfectly satisfied with my spinach so I’ve never bothered buying other greens.
Still not sure what grits are but they look like oatmeal on tv. I’m assuming it’s some kind of savory mush. Can’t say it wouldn’t be good with shrimp!
I don’t like tomato’s in general, don’t know why I’d like them underripe and fried. The movie by the same name is really good though!
food discourse time……y’all.
put where you’re from, and your opinion on these foods in the tags.
sweet iced tea
key lime pie
fried chicken
sweet potato casserole. bonus: with or without marshmallows?
peaches
collard greens
cornbread
biscuits and gravy
shrimp and grits
fried green tomatoes

Hey-o, I'm sorry to bother you but I hope you can help me out please! As an (asian) kid, I grew up eating before I go out, meaning that I've never been to a restaurant. Now that I'm in uni, and am allowed to go out with friends, I have a question that google cannot answer. How do restaurants work? What on earth is a __ course meal? How do you pay? How do you order? Do you order between courses? What if it's a slightly more casual place, do you go to the till to pay or do they come to do? Thanks!
This is an excellent ask!
Courses
Let’s start with the basics. A “__ course meal” is a way to decide with your friends or whoever you’re eating with how many courses you will be eating. A “course” is a meal.
A typical “3 course meal” consists of an appetizer (small plate), a main course (large plate with sides), and a dessert (sweets like ice cream or cake). The TV show Chopped is an excellent example of this type of meal, because the contestants cook a typical “3 course meal” every show.
A “2 course meal” would likely be just an appetizer and a main course. People don’t say “main course” when talking about that course, they’ll say “main”.
If you are unsure of how much food to order and from what menu sections (see below) ask your dining companions how many courses you will be eating.
Basic Restaurant Descriptions
Chain restaurants (also called “fast food”). Examples: McDonalds, Burger King, Popeye’s, Wendy’s, etc. These are restaurants that only offer one course. This is because many of these are not what we call “sit down” restaurants. Because people typically pick up their food to go and do not eat there, they literally do not “sit down”.
These chains will have limited menu options and typically only offer “main course” options with sides. They will ask if you want small, medium, or large. This corresponds to the size of your sides. You probably want large, by the way. You do not have a specific waiter/waitress to serve you, you will order and pick up your order at the counter. “Chain” restaurant literally means that there are many different locations for this restaurant all over the world. McDonalds is a classic example.
Family chain restaurants (also called “fast casual”) are chain restaurants where you would sit down to eat. Examples: Panera, Olive Garden, Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse, etc. These restaurants have an inviting atmosphere and typically will give you a waiter/waitress, but they still do have multiple locations and are considered to be chains. The main difference between a family chain and a regular chain is the fact that you will sit down to eat in the family chains.
“Fancy” restaurants (also called “fine dining”) often have dim or romantic lighting. They usually sell small portions of very expensive food, sometimes this food will be “styled” or arranged in an interesting way. They will likely have a gorgeous bathroom set up with real towels to dry your hands with, as opposed to fake ones. Typically these are the restaurants that you would take someone you are interested in dating, not really a place to take friends. These are “fine dining” restaurants because the food quality is considered to be very high.
Diners are essentially restaurants that have huge menus and serve a whole bunch of different food styles and types. They are typically not considered to have great food, but are lots of fun to go to with friends. Diners are typically styled like they’re straight out of the American 1950s, they even have jukeboxes. I really can’t explain why.
Brunch restaurants are restaurants that only serve brunch and lunch. Brunch is a fancy term for a late breakfast (think eggs, sandwiches, salads, pancakes and french toast). These restaurants are only open from 11am-3pm.
Menu Sections - Food
Restaurant menus are very user friendly. They have sections clearly labeled “appetizer” and “main course”. Restaurants typically have a separate dessert menu, but if you go to a diner or family chain restaurant they will list the “dessert” on their regular menu as well.
After deciding on how many courses everyone will be eating, choose what appeals to you from each section. When telling the waiter/waitress what they will be ordering, people typically list their appetizer first and then their main course. If you will be getting dessert, don’t order that course until you’re done eating the other two. I can’t explain why, but people don’t do that. Your waiter/waitress will likely ask you after clearing your plates from you other two courses if you’d like to order dessert.
Food selections vary depending on what style of restaurant you choose to go to. Typical American styled restaurants will offer a selection of salads and fried goodness on their appetizer menu. If you are unfamiliar with any of the choices, ask your friends to recommend their favorite. You can also ask the waitress or waiter “what’s good to eat in this restaurant?” and they will tell you the most popular dishes that most people order.
For the main course, you can typically order a pasta, salad, sandwich, or a protein (chicken, pork, fish, etc) with a couple sides. You will most likely not get to choose these sides, they will be predetermined. Most chain restaurants will allow you to choose the sides you want. The menu will literally say “pick 2 sides” or something like that. Once again I highly recommend you asking your friends what they like to eat. Main courses are large portions, at least twice the size of the appetizer. Unless, of course, you are eating at a fancy restaurant. They are also more expensive then the appetizer.
Desserts are always sweet, and usually are slightly larger then the appetizer. They will usually come with a sweet side. For example, you could order pie and it would come with a side of ice cream. These sides are always predetermined.
Menu Sections - Drinks
You can order drinks at any time during your meal. When you first sit down at your table and your waiter/waitress comes over, they will ask you if you want anything other then water to drink. Water is free. Other drinks cost money. Drinks will be listed in the “drinks” section of the menu.
Restaurants offer alcoholic (wine, beer) and non-alcoholic beverages (soda, juice, tea). Not all restaurants offer alcohol.
Coffee is also a very popular drink. In a diner or a chain, people will order coffee with their main course. At a fancy restaurant, people will order coffee with their dessert. Restaurants typically don’t mind either way, it’s a preference thing.
Every restaurant offers refills on all drinks, some are free, some are not.
In Between Courses
Most sit-down restaurants will offer you a complementary (free) bread basket when you first sit down. There will be bread with either butter or olive oil in this basket. Everyone shares this bread. You eat this while you’re ordering and while you’re waiting for your first course.
Courses typically come out pretty quickly, so people do not order anything between courses. Snack on that bread basket, you can even ask for a bread basket refill (it’s free). You can order drinks between courses or ask for drink refills. But mostly you just sit and talk with you friends.
Silverware
Silverware (eating utensils) will already be at the table when you sit down. You will usually be given only a knife and a fork. If you order something that requires additional silverware, your waiter/waitress will bring that out before your course is done cooking. For example, if you order a steak, your waiter/waitress will bring a steak knife for you. If your food does not require anything additional, you should just use the provided silverware.
You can always ask for something specific like a spoon if you need one. You may ask for this at any time.
Dress Code
Find out from your friends how “fancy” the restaurant is. If you are going to a chain restaurant or a diner, just wear your regular everyday clothes.
If you are going somewhere fast casual, sit down, or will be eating a 3 course meal- wear something nicer. People will typically use the word “casual” to describe this sort of place, but what they mean is no sneakers, plain t-shirt, nice hair, etc.
If your friends are taking you to a “fancy” restaurant and specifically tell you to “dress nice”, this is when you whip out the special occasion clothes. Nice dress, slacks, button down shirt, fancy shoes or heels, etc.
Typically, the more expensive a place is, the more effort you should put into your appearance. If you are unsure what to wear, then search the restaurant on “Yelp” and read what it says.
Prices/Paying
How much you will likely spend at a restaurant.
Chain restaurants: $5-$15Family Chain restaurants: $15-$30Diners: $15-$30Fancy restaurants: $50+
Typically chain and fast casual restaurants are places where you would pay at the till. You would not tip for these services.
In sit down restaurants, your waiter/waitress will bring the bill to you. If you’re with friends, you can ask to have it split up so that everyone pays an equal share or split up so that everyone pays for what they ordered. You would tip the waiter/waitress 20% of your bill. So if you spent $25, you would add $5 to the total expense for a total of $30.
Here’s how I do tips:
$5 = $1 tip
$10 = $2 tip
$15 = $3 tip
$20 = $4 tip
$25 = $5 tip
$30 = $5 tip
Add a dollar onto the tip per every five dollars spent on the food. You can always leave a bigger tip if you want to!
I hope this helps!! 💖
