MORGAUSE. IS. NOT. EVIL.
Please
Please
Please, stop portraying Morgause as a) An Abusive Mom, b) An Evil Sorceress, c) or a scheming, vengeful, bitch.
She's not a supervillain. She's. Not. Her. Sister. - hell, even her sister has reasons for doing things.
Morgause is a fair, if somewhat promiscuous (and even then, not much), good lady.
That's it.

Update: This crossover fic is now officially A Thing (with an actual plot, even!), so have a sneak peek of some parallel flashbacks below:
—
"Why do you hate him so?"
Maedhros had never dared to ask this before. It had simply been an unquestioned fact of who his father was: Fëanor was the most brilliant craftsman of all the Noldor, and he was bright and fierce and loved his children fervently, and he hated the progeny of his father's second marriage, most especially his half-brother Fingolfin.
He had not questioned it because to ask 'why' was to suggest that it could be otherwise. It demanded a reason, a justification. It implied that such hatred was not indeed a fact of his father's being, but a choice.
Maedhros had not been there when his father drew a sword on his brother, but he had heard it described by Fingon afterwards. And though Fingon had uttered no word of blame toward Maedhros for the strife between their families, he had seen the pain and anger in his cousin's eyes as he spoke. He could still see the image of it in his mind, and he felt sick.
"Why?" he demanded, and wished that he had asked it years before.
—
"Why should I not hate him?"
Morgause rounded on her son, hands clenched into fists at her sides. Her face was suffused with fury, but Gawain could only feel grief as he looked at her.
"Is he not the reason that everything was taken from me?" she spat, her voice scraped raw. "Was my father not slain, my mother beguiled and chained to that bastard who called himself our king–"
"Surely you cannot blame an unborn child for that!"
"He is an unborn child no longer," Morgause said grimly. "He is a man and wears his father's crown, and if he will call himself heir to the wealth and power of Uther Pendragon, then it seems only just that he inherits his sins as well."
"Are sins inherited, then?" Gawain asked quietly.
"I only pray that they are not, Mother, or I fear I shall be heir to many."
Currently reading The Silmarillion, and I don't know enough about the fandom to know if this point has been made before, but I'm fascinated by how much Maedhros comes across as a darker version of Gawain.*
Like, the Chronic Older Brother Syndrome? The constantly trying to keep a handle on a crowd of younger brothers who range from stabby to downright evil? The parent with a raging hate-on for their half-brother? Turning around and swearing fealty and acknowledging the kingship of said half-uncle anyway because it's the right thing to do? Just the general constantly getting caught in the middle of family drama with a literal body count despite actively trying to be on good terms with everyone involved? The blood feuds? The oath of vengeance which was objectively a terrible move but it was motivated by family loyalty and it's too late to turn back now? The courtesy and diplomatic skills? Even the close relationship with his cousin that's a li'l bit Sailor Moon, arguably?
These are all extremely #Gawaincore things, and given Tolkien's love of Arthurian mythology I have to think it was either intentional, or at least a subconscious influence. Tolkien even started writing his own retelling of the downfall of Camelot (sadly unfinished), as well as doing his own translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which suggests to me that Gawain was a character he had particular interest in. (I haven't read Tolkien's Fall of Arthur, but I'd be really interested to check it out now and see how much these parallels are apparent in his Gawain portrayal.)
Anyway, I like to think if these two somehow met, they'd find a lot of common ground to commiserate/bond over that next to no one else would relate to. And I may or may not be tempted to write a fic where they do exactly that.
*Depending on the version of Gawain we're talking about, obviously, as some of his portrayals can be downright despicable. But I personally lean towards a Gawain that's more straightforwardly heroic than any of the Feanorians, though still flawed - and from Tolkien's own work with Arthuriana, it seems he did too.
#generational trauma babyyyyyy#these poor kids never really had a chance#and I'm including Morgause in that really#she's an adult woman arguing with her young-adult son here#but I feel like you get a glimpse of the child Morgause who had her whole world ripped away underneath

I am so obsessed with it!!!
Hi! Of course I can tag you, @toomanyfanficsbruh! Whoever wants me to tag them in the next parts of my AU just let me know and I'll do it! It makes me so happy that you want to be updated on my story ❤️🤧
Also, feel free to make me asks! My english is not the best sometimes but I'll do the best I can ^^
Talking about asks, this is the updated list of ideas/requests you gave me for the AU:
Scene where arthur is listing the 'events that are about to unfold' on a piece a patchment ✅️
Uther finding out about arthur's weird obsession with merlin ✅️
Arthur has to protect Merlin from his father ✅️
Arthur enchanted ✅️
Gwaine and Percival
Gwaine brazenly flirting with Merlin & Arthur's reaction.
Merlin in a pretty dress.
Merlin in armour and/or learning how to fight and Arthur be like Arthur.exe is not responding 404 BRAIN
Morgause and Nimueh alliance
Freya (oh, my poor baby)
Arthur showing Merlin around the visiting nobles from other kingdoms.
Gwen and Elyan reunion
Balinor
The moment they Figure Out (the angst!!)
Lance and Leon roasting them both for being so sickeningly obviously in love. (I think they are already doing it though?)
Mordred and Aithusa.
Most of them will happen in series 2, I think just "Mordred and Aithusa" will have to wait till series 3 (if there is one, I haven't thought that far, to be honest). At least I'm not sure how to add them yet.
Have a wonderful day! 🥰

Could have destiny, and therefore Arthur’s death, really be avoided in Merlin? Or were things supposed to flow like that either way?
The first thought that struck me, as soon as the last episode ended, was the usual “what if?” that keeps this fandom alive, alongside the plethora of theories (that I like looking into and discuss) questions, answers and headcanons.
But no matter how many times I think about it, I personally believe that the answer to the question in the title is simply:
No.
It couldn’t.
The directors, no matter how many choices they made, that we could either think are wrong or not, had also made a wonderful job of deceiving us, but not really, and ending the show with a tragedy and a good fucking plot.
What is the plot, you may ask?
“You don’t choose destiny, destiny chooses you”,
and I think it’s brilliant.
First thing first, destiny:
The directors said: “Fuck it.” They tried everything they could do so that Merlin, at the end of the day, had only one choice. It is really an hard point to make, especially because we like to think that if Merlin had done something differently, things could have actually took another road, and yes, it could have, but it didn’t happen, because we needed an enemy in the show, and it was made on purpose. I like to think that the directors knew it would piss people off. It did. Great job, you guys, I still think about it after fifteen years.
Second thing, who’s the bad guy? (Uther)
What I mean by this, is that I’m asking this question to the main characters who the directors wanted us to believe they were objectively good, right, like Merlin, or Gaius, and even Arthur. How about, no one of them had to be completely good? It hurts less if the characters I just cited acted differently, like we oftentimes say of Merlin, but it’s fiction, and we wouldn’t have Tumblr to discuss it on, if they were all perfect, so why not give them some very bad flows? *cough* All the better if they’re murderers *cough*. Now, if it were reality, I too would have said: “Go to hell”, but it’s BBC Merlin, so let me have some fun.
Morgana is bad, Merlin could be too, Arthur even, also Gwen, Lancelot too, and all the wicked team we’ve got. Oh, especially the toilet they had instead of a king, the one and only Uther Pendragon. I even said that Gaius is bad, and offended Hunith of all people, so let’s get to my point. Merlin could have done things differently? Yes. But Morgana, too. Hell, also Arthur. The point of the TV show is the very, very bad choice Uther made of being a tyrant, so. Merlin could have told Morgana he had magic? Yep, but sometimes I believe Morgana had to be evil, so even if she could have become like that in another way, she made her own choice. She knew Merlin was a good person, who didn’t dislike her because of the magic, and still threatened him throughout all season three, causing chaos and death because she craved power and she was in a privileged position where she could do all these things. We like to blame Merlin and Gaius for how she turned out, but what about Gwen? Poor woman didn’t do anything, as much as breathing too hard near her mistress, and Morgana wanted her dead because she hated the idea that a woman like Gwen, who even if amazing and with so many skills, was just a peasant, and could get on her throne. Morgana made the choice to hate Gwen. Morgana made the choice to try and kill Arthur to take her throne, even when Arthur had no idea of what was happening. Heavy on her throne, because who said it was? By age, status, whatever, Uther appointed Arthur as the heir, and there is no changing that. (so, bad Morgana. See? She had to be, like, it was the director’s job)
“Merlin poisoned her.” He did, and isn’t that magnificent? We can see how it destroys both of them in their own ways. Why did they have to be good characters? Imagine how boring the show would have been, and now I wouldn’t be making a post about it at ten in the evening. Morgana chose Morgause. There is no discussing that. As soon as she saw she could take Arthur’s throne, she started doing the evil smirk every two seconds, accuse Gwen of being a sorceress (shouldn’t she side with her own kind?), killing guards wherever she went, sneaking out with the clip, clap of her boots to make bad things, uh uh, in the woods, uh uh.
Third thing, Merlin tried, poor guy:
No, he is not perfect either, and I love it. He is a man who got appointed with this great job to do the right thing since he was a boy, and what did the lad do? Many wrong things, LMAO. And still, in his perspective, they were right. And we agree on most of them, don’t we? Everything because we’ve got his point of view. It was right for Merlin to try and kill a child, because of a prophecy; it was right to lie to Morgana, because she was upstanding, and he was just a peasant; it was right to free a dragon, and he was simply right on this one (yes, to me, there is no discussing this. I would have freed The Great Dragon too, and I cannot blame him for what he did after); it was right to poison Morgana; it was right for Merlin to follow Arthur everywhere and believe he was a good man despite everything, because the idiots loved one another more than they could hate the system they had been put in (spoiler alert, Arthur too has so many flows). Why listing all these things he thought were right? Because they were right to him, because we know his life, how much he had hurt, and how much death not only he saw, but also inflicted. And Morgana killed so many people too. She, multiple times, committed treason, and Merlin had enough information to know that she agreed to make Camelot sleep. Thinking only of saving Arthur and innocent people, he did what he thought was best (this is the same man who had already saved Morgana after he had already tried to kill her, because he tried with all his might not to be a killer, like he had said to the dragon long before), and poisoned her. Could there be an excuse for Mordred? I believe not, but Merlin believed there was, and that’s enough for him, for the audience, and that’s what makes him such a complicated and beautiful character. Merlin did help Morgana, even if he lied to her, and what if he didn’t? He could have got into so much more trouble, Gaius would have reproached him, Merlin believed neither Arthur or Camelot were ready to accept magic, or him, and Morgana, once finding out about the fact that he was Uther’s daughter, she would have probably still acted the same, because we later see that she didn’t want magic to not be outlawed anymore, but to simply, ehm, kill Arthur and everyone who got in her way.
Fourth thing, the other characters can be bad too:
Even if enchanted, Gwen did betray Arthur. (she is such a good character, and very kind, but I like when even the best ones do something bad). We know she is not guilty, but nobody knew, not even Merlin and Gaius, because they never found out she had been enchanted. And when she was evil, there are still consequences to the deaths she caused. Lancelot, even if a good man, and a good friend to Merlin, left before Gwen could decided if she wanted a relationship with him. Gwaine, who we love and adore, him too a complex character, didn’t think about it twice in kicking Merlin in the dungeons when Gwen, evil and enchanted, had accused him of treason. (yes, she is the queen, but Gwaine doesn’t seem the kind of character who would that, or maybe yes?) What about “you’re the only friend I have” and all that? Arthur still made prejudiced choices even when crowned king, and Merlin supported him, and we know why. Even bloody Sefa, manipulated by her father, decided to commit treason.
My point is, who wouldn’t have loved if things went differently, but at the same time, a TV show that is so perfect, with characters who cannot make a single bad thing, would have been still this enjoyable? Hell, that is the point of fiction, that is the point of writing, of directing. Even when we look at bad choices in a TV series, we try to understand why those things happened, why character A betrayed character B and the dominoes effect their relationship brought.
That’s what makes the TV show better. You can build things off bad things. You can make good fanfictions about what could have gone different. You can make theories debating whatever these choices were simply poorly made by the directors or made on purpose. You can discuss all day the relationships between the characters because they’re flowed, and sometimes even toxic.
That is the best part.
This is not to say that we cannot blame a character’s arc for something that happened, or try to redeem another character, instead, but it’s also good to be able to judge and point and write about it.
Even in this post I made points that I believe should be objective (siding with the oppressor, being an oppressor, not blaming a caged dragon for revenge, ecc.) and yet I still like the characters because I can blame them and talk about them exactly because they’re bad.
Moral of the story. A good story always has an antagonist. We shouldn’t delete that.
(and fuck you, Uther Pendragon)
See? Beautiful.
#does this make sense?#i’ve been debating for ages about posting this or not#i don’t excuse anyone’s behaviour#but in the show it is made on purpose for us to judge#when it’s fiction we have the liberty to take so many point of views#and i’m only referring to the characters who are bad written#because i never once excused or redeemed uther#because HE is written good#that’s why we all hate him#because we know he is the culprit of all the other bad characters#if it wasn’t for him nothing would have happened#and we can recognise that#and that’s why the other characters are debatable#and we start discussing it#i already talked too much#merthur#bbc merlin#merlin bbc#merlin#arthur pendragon

My thoughts on S3 of Merlin
aka me breaking down the characters this season cause that's how my brain works
Morgana- I've got mixed feelings. On one hand, I love seeing her grow into her identity with magic and be "evil" but I do miss her kindness. She has wanted to kill Merlin, Arthur, and Gwen multiple times and has become obsessed with power. But, her anger towards Uther is very fair.
Uther - This slime ball keeps getting chances to live that he doesn't deserve and quite frankly, I'm a bit sick of it. As Merlin pointed out, Uther is a huge hypocrite when it comes to magic. Also I hate that his first reaction to Alice using magic to HEAL people is that she needs to be killed. And it was revealed this season he cheated on his wife, as if I needed another reason to hate him. I hope he dies soon.
Merlin - my sweet boy, he's my favorite character. I love his kindness and effort to see the best in everyone. I also liked his moments with magical figures, like the fisher king and the king in the crystal cave. There's a sense of guidance and peace in those scenes. I think his relationship with the Dragon has changed too. They seem to respect each other more. I also love Merlin's banter with Gwaine, they've got a similar sense of humor. I really want him to tell Arthur about his magic and just list all the times he's saved him.
Arthur - He's so noble and genuinely cares about his people. His unwavering loyalty to his father is slightly annoying but that's the type of person Arthur is, loyal to a fault. I loved the episode when he and Gwen's love was discovered, Arthur's fierceness to protect her was great.
Gwen - She's also a very kind character. My poor girl had to get kidnapped AGAIN this season. I liked seeing her relationship with her brother. I am a bit worried about things now that Lancelot is back.
Gwaine- I really like his character; he's fun. I like how he's just willing to help Merlin and Arthur with whatever quest they're on because they're his friends and he has nothing better to do.
Cenred - I was mad when he was killed by Morgause. I figured it was going to happen but I wanted him to have more interactions with our main characters because he's this character that radiates evil and maliciousness that's very captivating to watch.

"The last woman I trusted tried to kill me," he snaps unthinkingly, realising - too late - what he has just admitted. The large scar on his abdomen he had vaguely explained away as a battle wound: he had neglected to explain against what opponent he had been fighting. A strange, unsettled feeling descends upon him as Aelin talks of him thinking little of her and he resists the urge to correct her. In truth, there are few people he thinks more highly of than his new wife; she is the only one that can understand the weight of the crown. As she continues to speak he feels his anger ebb away far quicker than he was accustomed to...and when be turns to face her, there is just a hint of remorse across his handsome features.
"Good," he nods curtly at her reassurance. "I may, perhaps, have overreacted," he admits, as close to an apology that he could manage. He cannot process the implications behind the rest of her words - that she, undoubtedly along with the majority of their people, does not expect the same loyalty from him. He steps towards her again, closing the distance between them and idly reaching out for her hands. "I do not like other men looking at you in such a way," he admits, jaw clenching. "I feel rather...protective of you," he murmurs, with uncharacteristic vulnerability.
__________△ HIS PACING COULD BURN TRACKS INTO THE VERY GROUND HE WALKS ON WITH HOW INTENSELY HE MOVES. her retort is quick, searing. the fire to his ice ( perhaps in another life, they could have explored whether opposites really do attract ) ❛ you do not trust me ?? ❜ while his back is to her, she still cannot face him, instead turning her gaze to fix on some point on the wall beyond him. she cannot admit just how the accusation cuts her. she pivots, steeling herself && that fragile heart of hers from more harm. ❛ i didn't believe you could think so little of me so easily. ❜ the first chink in her armor appears at his … vulnerability. whatever she had expected of him, it certainly hadn't been that. her anger abates somewhat, though she still tastes its bitter poison on her tongue as she lets out a long sigh. she meets his admission with one of her own. ❛ your people will not have to wonder. ❜ the knot in her stomach twists && she takes several steps away from him. an abyss between. ❛ i have been queen since i was eight years old. sometimes i have to remind myself that i am more than someone's duty. what happened tonight was only that. a naive distraction. ❜ she chokes on an apology, too unused to having to admit to a wrong when she wears a crown. ❛ my vows mean something to me. no one else will ever share my bed so long as we are married. i will not ask the same of you. i know how this world works. i only ask that you at least respect my honor. ❜

Becoming a mom has made me realise just how truly devastating the idea was of Ygraine meeting Arthur when he’s a grown man.
Let’s assume for a moment that it was her spirit in The Sins of the Father, and not some illusion. This is actually not that unlikely, given how Morgause has an affinity with summoning beings from beyond the veil.
So Ygraine is revealing all this information to Arthur that she had no way of knowing while she was still alive. That means she could see what happened in Camelot after she died.
That woman watched her son grow up. Her son. The one she struggled to conceive and felt grow in her belly. The one she almost, almost got to meet.
She gets to watch as Uther bans magic, bans her friends (since its been established they knew Nimueh, I’m assuming she probably had friends who wielded magic). And then she sees how Uther turns into this bitter, abusing asshole we all know him to be. How he sets impossibly high standards for her poor son. How the kid gets no physical affection whatsoever which is how he grows into the touch starved man we get to meet in the show.
Ygraine has to watch all of this, unable to do something about it. And then when Morgause finally introduces them, this happens:
Arthur apologises. Her baby apologises. I can tell you with absolute certainty that even if she had a choice in the matter, she would have chosen his life over hers. (She literally says so in the end, too) And that precious child apologises 💔
Then, when she tries to tell him not to feel sorry, she puts the blame with Uther (where it belongs) but in doing so, the conversation turns into one about Uther rather than giving Ygraine the chance to talk to her boy. To finally get to meet him after spending so many years watching from afar.
They barely get any time together. And this is the conversation they have. So yeah. Heartbreak. Pure heartbreak.

So an AU where Mat isn’t Ta’veren and becomes our POV in the Black Tower.
Now the first dilemma I faced was how much Mat should be integrated into the main plot, especially given that the Black Tower isn’t created until book five. So here’s what I got so far input for what this goofy little guy should get up to is welcome.
So after Winter Night, Perrin, Rand, and Egwene go with Morraine and Lan leaving our non-Ta’veren ordinary guy Mat behind. Now Mat, not knowing the details, is quite upset because as far as he knows his two best friends just ditched him to go on an adventure without him. When Nynaeve goes after them Mat tries to tag along but Nynaeve very firmly sends him back home. However, Ta’veren or not this is still Mat Cauthon we’re talking about so he goes after them himself. He spends the rest of Eye of The World having narrow misses with the plot, running into Thom at Whitebridge after the Myrdraal incident and drags that poor man all the way to Camlyn only to discover that he once again missed his friends and now has no idea where they’ve gone.
In The Great Hunt we find Mat traveling with Thom and Dana as an apprentice Gleeman, until they meet up with Rand in Cairihan. Rand tells him about the the horn but leaves out the whole, he’s the dragon reborn bit. Now this version of Mat doesn’t believe he’s a hero but he also has yet to discover Consequences so he really wants to be one, so he immediately insists on joining Rand to find the horn of Valere. Rand tries the tried and true method of being the worst to your loved ones to drive them away for their own good but while it DOES upset Mat, you aren’t shaking him that easily especially since he’s already invited to that party Rand and friends needs to break into. Things end up going relatively the same from their and they all go to Falme, Mat gets a late reveal there that Rand is the Dragon Reborn, we have Seanchen problems and Mat is still the one to blow the horn of Valere.
The Dragon Reborn baby, in order to try and keep Mat safely out of the plot Rand convinces him to escort the girls back to Tarvalon. Now no one but Rand and Perrin know he blew the horn of Valere and at their urging Mat decides to keep it that way, but he quickly finds that when your a man and not Ta’veren or the known sounder of the horn of Valere you very quickly get bored of the White Tower. After spending some time gambling at every tavern in Tarvalon and training a bit with the warders and Gawyn and Galad, the girls give him the letter for Morgause and send him on his way no Armylin permission slip required. Things go pretty similarly as they do in the book, Mat picks up a depressed Thom, discovers a plot to kill the girl’s, gets some fireworks and breaks into the Stone, though he is now slightly less effective without his supernatural luck.
The Shadow Rising finds our boy Mat feeling severely put out and a bit helpless. The girls as usual were less then grateful for the rescue and Rand and Perrin are too busy to talk to him. He still goes to Egwene for advice and hears about the Red Stone Door and still goes through it, though this time he actually gets to ask his three questions before getting kicked out since there’s now only One Ta’veren in there. Mat’s still contemplating what his confusing answers mean when Rand pops out, and things continue from there as planned. This time however Mat does not go to the Wastes and instead joins Thom and Julin as unwanted bodyguards for Nynaeve and Elayne. Hilarity ensues. More importantly however during the Tanchico arc Mat starts considering the possibility of learning to channel. After all, the girls aren’t wrong about him not being much help against the black ajah without channeling. So using the scraps of information he has he tries to teach himself how to channel. But it’s not going so well. However once they reach Salidar he finds a certain someone who might be able to help with that…
In Fires of Heaven and onwards we get more of Mat feeling helpless to protect his friends and using his most powerful weapon, his puppy dog eyes, he gets Logain to grudgingly agree to help teach him though one problem is that Logain is gentled but Mat won’t let that stop him. Egwene shows up, Logain is de-gentled and Mat get’s the bright idea to take the bow healed Logain and head to the Black Tower. Mat proceeds to get tangled up in both the Black Tower sub plot and Elayne’s Succession plot line. He also finds Olver at some point. That’s all I got so far

Amelie nods slightly,still holding Mort.
"If you ever need information or anything of that sort, feel free to approach me."
Amelie's head snaps up at Mort and away from the cards. It didn't realise it was getting lost in them.
"Sorry. It's just- it feels like a storm is coming."
It shakes its head, trying to get rid of the odd feeling.
"Would you mind if I stayed with you for a few hours more¿?"
"I wouldn't."
He knows the feeling well. But the storm's always passed over him and his house. They will not be lost here. They'll be safe here. He swears it.

prompt: "nightfall" | Implied Morgana/Uther, Morgana/Morgause, Morgana/Arthur | Not Rated | Incestuous undertones, Violence
{Nightfall written for @merlinmicrofic}
It was different in the day—that gray, mourning light when death nearly snatched her soul. Overhearing whispers in dense dream fog:
Could it be?
Must it be?
Her fingers curled with loathing at the words, the revelation seeping into her brain, then down, down, down back into that death of sleep she fell, waiting, thinking, wondering if she posed the question to him then perhaps, she could stay her hand, lay down her crusade.
Perhaps, she wouldn’t have to kill the king.
Perhaps, she wouldn’t have to kill her father.
When he arrived at her door, his face ebullient, full of love, her heart burst with resounding joy, her body tingling on edge of anticipation and dread—
This was the moment. The moment she would no longer be a ward shut up in a chamber, yearning for her father, the father that was taken from her. Now, she would have a new father…a brother; she would have a family again.
Her eyes welled staring up into his, his hands in hers, her heart fluttering like a bird taking flight.
That was pierced clean through by an arrow.
Gasping, she watched him walk away, and it was as if a dark poison ran through her veins as she fell like a bird from the sky down, down, down.
Night fell.
Everything full of promise in the day dies a slow death in the night. Nothing is as it appears, all dark pitch and shadow. The mind wanders to past hurts, recalling old haunts.
The ghosts come calling back.
Or a sister.
Morgause whispers in Morgana’s ear, a touch as gentle as a lover’s kiss. Of course, how could she have forgotten, she is her family now.
Arthur isn’t Uther’s son, but an imposter, conceived of magic and carried in Ygraine’s womb until she died bloody on the birthing bed, the price for Nimueh’s sorcery and her father’s own hubris. His lust for an heir.
And thousands died in his grief thereafter.
She could be one of them, she thinks, not hearing her half-sister as she tells her to wait out this night of storms and darkness, thunder and rain, to not act rashly.
But Morgana is elsewhere, down, down, down in the dungeons where Uther had thrown her mercilessly in chains, and the imprint of his hands at her throat, they’re there again suffocating her.
She remembers the names of those less fortunate than her, those poor men and woman executed in pyres of scorching flame or beheaded by the executioner’s grisly ax.
She could be one of them.
She is one of them.
He has proven that he doesn’t care for her, as she did for him all those weary years kept like a prisoner inside these very walls.
Inside those walls, lightning illuminates her twisted face.
Night has fallen.
And now, the poison in her head, her heart, urges her to act.
Tonight, she will murder her father and dance in the blood to pool at his feet.

Merlin rewatch 2x08 : "The sins of the father"
Part 1 :
Alright ! While Ao3 is down for maintenance, I'm going to watch "Merlin".
I like that we're going to see why the Purge happened, right after an episode like "The witchfinder", in which we saw how terrible witch hunting had been for decades.
It took me several times going back to this scene to notice that this is Sir Caradoc being knighted ? Karadoc ? Coucouuuu.
Wow, Uther praising his son ! "You'll find know one who embodies this values better than my son". (Nobility, honor, respect).
All the new knights circle in front of the king to protect him but Arthur steps forward. No one protects him but Merlin, and he doesn't even know it.
Morgana's interest in Morgause... She probably senses she's familiar.
Arthur is holding himself to the same standards as his fellow knights and I love him for it. No hypocrisy here.
He also states twice he refuses to be taken for a coward.
I love that Merlin points out the obvious : Arthur is gallant, he could hesitate to kill her because she's a woman, and she could use that to her advantage.
Ah, Morgause and her eyeliner...
"Who's to say Arthur's life won't rest in my hands ?" Merlin is like "oh fuuuuck".
Merlin comforting Arthur before the duel, stating he gave Morgause a chance to withdraw and whatever happens will be her doing <3
Lemme say I love that we saw him tinkering with Arthur's armor to fix it and later that we saw him finishing to put it on Arthur. In fanfic, it's such an important plot point. Even when Merlin can be rid of his other tasks, he'll never let anyone else take care of Arthur's armor, in case they mess with it. This armor is Arthur's life, and Merlin should have reinforced it with magic ages ago already.
Morgause's win is quite the accomplishment, as Arthur is apparently one of the best fighters in all of Albion...
That tear in Arthur's eye when he realises she could kill him...
"I have never been so humiliated in my life... I was defeated... by a girl." Arthur you really need to be less sexist.
Morgana you are gorgeous in that silver dress.
Morgause is not looking very straight in that shirt...
"You've shown yourself to be a man of honor."
And she hits where it hurts. Ygraine is Arthur's Achille heel...
Uther is showing himself to be the antithesis to Arthur. He was the one who knighted those new knights at the beginning to the episode, asking them to keep their word and behave with honor, but now he's asking his son to break his word and not go to Morgause. He knows more than he lets on and he's a liar.
Merlin enjoying Arthur's humiliation is pretty funny.
We need to stop with the fatphobic jokes. I never thought they were funny before and I still don't think they're funny now.
"THERE IS NO MORE ROPE" lol Arthur in horse dung !
"I swear this horse is even dumber than you Merlin" how about you stop calling your only friend stupid, dumb, etc ?
Gaius espèce de grosse balance.
I KNEW there would be an arrow flying right in front of them !
The spear is catching fire ? MERLIN ! How obvious is that !? And how oblivious is poor Arthur ?
Aww Arthur is opening up to Merlin and telling him Morgause knew his mother !
Help Morgana is too beautiful here and I'm too gay for this.
Those scenes by the fire in the middle of the forest are always some of the best for Merthur. They're far away from court, Uther, etc. It's just them, their personalities, and they open up and confide in each other. I think it's the first time Arthur talks about his mother and the first time Merlin mentions his father.
Part 2 coming soon.

Modern Merlin Moodboards (Part 2) (Revamped);
Character: Queen Guinevere Pendragon.
Modern name: Gwen Smith.
Age: 37 years old.
Modern job: Owner of a floral and boutique shop called 'Camelot Beauties'.
Short rundown of their modern life: Gwen Smith was born to a poor family in Brooklyn and grew up very happy until the death of her mother, which caused her older brother, Elyan, to runaway from home when she was 12.
Her mother was a seamstress and her father was a factory worker—both of whom would die from separate illnesses when she was 11 and 19 respectfully (not long after she first started her business). Leaving her on her own for a few months aside from her childhood best friend— Morgan's—family until her brother returned.
She would later go on to attend the weddings of Mithian and Elyan & Morgan and Del (as well as several others as she continued to meet people that her new friend Merlin kept introducing her to)—and she'd go to volunteer at Tristian and Izzy's Youth Center. Which was very fulfilling.
However, she could never quite shake the feeling that something was missing. A feeling that only slightly lessened when she adopted the baby boy she found on the doorstep of her shop when she was 26.
A feeling that continues to grow with every dream of the blonde with a charming smile in red who feels like home.
Character: King Arthur Pendragon.
Modern name: Arthur Smith.
Age: 38 years old.
Modern job: Stay at home dad (until he becomes more acquainted with the modern day).
Short rundown of their modern life: King Arthur Pendragon has not yet risen but will likely become a stay at home dad (until he becomes more acquainted with the modern day) when he does.
Character: Arthur the lesser and Artie Pendragon.
Modern name: Artie Smith.
Age: 11 years old.
Modern job: None. He's a student.
Short rundown of their modern life: Little Artie was left on the doorstep of 'Camelot Beauties' where he was found by the owner, Gwen Smith, who took him in.
She went on to raise him with the help of Morgana, Elyan, and the others.
Which caused him to befriend most, if not all, of their kids.
Character: Morgause.
Modern name: Morgause le Fay.
Age: 43 years old.
Modern job: Lawyer.
Short rundown of their modern life: Morgause le Fay was born to an unfaithful stay at home mom (and former socialite) and a soldier (who loved her very much).
Eventually though her father died during combat and her mother disappeared in a fire (caused by an oven that was developed and sold by the Penace Industries— Morgan's father owned), leaving her in charge of her younger sister and permantly disfigured at 17 years old.
She then had to fight tooth and nail to become emancipated and then fight to gain custody of her sister against her sister, Morgan's, biological father (who was a very bigoted and classist man). Which wasn't easy to do but she managed. All the while beginning to hate the man more than she already had before the incident.
She went on to rent a house with a wannabe magician named Edwin so she could properly take care of her sister while she took up different jobs to provide for them both. And later the little street rat her sister took a liking to, Mordred.
After Morgan graduated, Morgause started to seeing Edwin—who she had already befriended and bonded with over their shared burn scars—and went to law school. Still working multiple jobs to feed herself and Mordred (with help from Morgan who had gotten a scholarship and access to a trust fund after her bio father died).
And eventually, Morgause graduated and began a lawyer—one who fought for those who couldn't fit for themselves. One who fought for businesses like the one her sister ran.
Character: Edwin Muriden.
Modern name: Edwin 'Ed' Mercer.
Age: 43 years old.
Modern job: Famous Magician.
Short rundown of their modern life: Edwin 'Ed' Mercer grew up in the circus, raised by magicians until he was 7 when an oil lamp made by Penace Industries caused the trailer he lived in with his parents to burst into flames with them inside while he was playing outside.
Once he realized that his parents were in fact still inside, Edwin threw himself into the flames trying to save them and became disfigured in the process.
From that day on, he swore vengeance against Penace Industries—more specifically the owner—and ended up becoming roommates with the man's daughter and her older half sister, who Edwin took a fancy to.
He dropped his plans for revenge after Morgan's father died and continued on his path to becoming a magician.
Eventually crossing paths with Magicans Sophia and Gili, and street performer, Daegal, who he kinda became friendly rivals with.
Now he's a famous magician but still lives with Morgause who he is dating (niether are into the whole marriage thing) and he is very happy.
Character: Lady Morgana Pendragon.
Modern name: Morgan le Fay.
Age: 41 years old.
Modern job: Owner of Morgan's Palace (a restaurant and gay club/bar).
Short rundown of their modern life: Morgan was the product of an affair between rich business man Uther Penace and her unfaithful stay at home (and former socialite) mom.
For the first fifteen years of her life, she was unaware of this fact as she was raised by her mother and her mother's husband—who was a solider—alongside her older half sister, Morgause.
Then her step father died in combat and a fire broke out because of a faulty oven that caused her mother to disappear and her sister to become disfigured.
She was in the foster system for months as her sister and father fought over custody of her until her sister finally won and took her in, working her ass off to provide for her.
When Morgan was 17, she found a little boy around 4 digging around in the trash trying to find some food after his own father died and convinced Morgause to take him in as their brother.
The boy's name was Mordred and he now works at the club/bar/ restaurant that Morgan opened up as soon as she had the proper licensing (at 21) and built with the leftover money from her trust fund (that her bio father left her).
Her business is located right next to childhood friend (Gwen Smith)'s shop, Camelot Beauties, and she (along with her wife, Del, who owns an occult shop just up the road) has helped Gwen raise her adoptive son, Artie, since the very beginning alongside her own son, Morgie.
Character: Forridel.
Modern name: Del le Fay.
Age: 41 years old.
Modern job: Occult Shop Owner.
Short rundown of their modern life: Del le Fay (Nee West) was raised by her elderly grandmother who remained her only family until she died when Del was 24.
Leaving Del grieving and the proud owner of her grandmother's occult shop (West's Occult Shop).
The shop where Del would meet her adoptive little sister, Kara.
The shop where Del would meet her wife, Morgan le Fay, one day when she was 26 and looking for a present for her little thirteen year old brother, Mordred (who it turns out Kara knew when she was little if the pictures she had on her were anything to go by.
They quickly became friends and after three years of being friends, they started dating and eventually married.
She is also hiding a white baby dragin named 'Aithusa' that she found that only Morgan's son knows about. Well, officially anyway. Plenty of people have seen the dragon and it has become a bit of a local cryptid around where they live.
Character: Morgie le Fay.
Modern name: Morgar 'Morgie' le Fay.
Age: 13 years old.
Modern job: None. He's a student.
Short rundown of their modern life: Morgar 'Morgie' le Fay was born under mysterious circumstances to Morgan le Fay before Morgan and Del started dating.
He was raised alongside Artie and has always looked up to his uncle Mordred.
When he was three he started having visions of his mother's past life and because of that he's become somewhat disillusioned to the world around him. And he's started to resent Artie.
And ever since he learned how to read, he's been practicing magic in secret. Including dark magic.
He's been helping his other mother, Del, hide and take care of Aithusa and thrives on hearing the stories people throw around about the supposed 'cryptid' that he knows is just the dragon. He finds them hilarious.
He is very happy with his parents despite his growing mental health issues and resentment towards the world around him.
Character: Sir Mordred.
Modern name: Mordred Barlow le Fay.
Age: 28 years old.
Modern job: Waiter (at Morgan's Place) and Medical Intern.
Short rundown of their modern life: Mordred Barlow (Now Moedred Barlow le Fay) was born in a Wiccan compound who kept to themselves who he lived with for the first few years of his life.
When he was four, his father was sent out for supplies and took him with him—only to be killed in a mugging. Causing Mordred to have to fend for himself for a couple of days until he was found by Morgan le Fay who convinced her sister to take them in as their father.
So his name was changed to Mordred Barlow le Fay and he was raised as their little brother.
When he was 13, Morgan got him some Wiccan books for his birthday from the shop where she met her girlfriend, who just so happened to be fostering Mordred old childhood friend, Kara.
Now he lives in a flat above Morgan's Palace with his fiancée, Kara, where they both work while he interns at the local hospital under Dr. Merlin Everstone as he studies to become one himself.
Character: Kara.
Modern name: Kara Galdur.
Age: 28 years old.
Modern job: Waitress (at Morgan's Place) and Overnight Stocker (West's Occult Shop).
Short rundown of their modern life: When Kara was 11, her guardian abandoned her into the custody of Del West who's treated like a younger sister ever since.
When she was 13, whe was reunited with her old childhood friend, Mordred, and her adoptive sister befriended his adoptive sister.
When she was 16, Del and Morgana married, and she started dating Mordred.
Now she works as a waitress at Morgan's Palace and an overnight stalker at at West's Occult Shop, and lives in the flat over Morgan's Palace with her fiance, Mordred.

MORGAUSE X CENRED. CASTLE OF FYRIEN. DARK.
Morgause is smiling, watching Cenred and that poor maid, Guinevere, from her hiding. But the poisonous flower of her smirk fades away when Cenred slowly approaches Guinevere. He smiles perhaps too much, rivets his dark glare on the girl's pretty face and bosom, and talks about what he wants her to do for him. The serving girl seems offended, and it's clear why. Cenred is seductive. Intimidating. Perfect and unbearable. Something in Morgause ignites an evil fire in her chest, she grinds her teeth, she cannot hear what he is saying to her. But then Cenred raises his hand, not for caress, oh Goddess, not for it. He painfully closes his fingers on the girl's neck and strangles her, threatening her pathetic brother's life. He hurts her. What a relief. The fire goes out, and Morgause smirks again. He's hers.

first off; love the unseelie hairstyles. they're very 80s-90s punk and alt style, and the fact that this is the norm for them adds so much personality to their culture. now for the actual question: in a place as chaotic as unseelie, what counts as 'upper class'? those that work for morgause, or is there something more to it?
That's exactly what I was going for! Thank you so much!
The Unseelie Court operates a "free market" kind of economy. There are rich and poor just like anywhere else. If there is a large demand for something and somebody sells supply of it, they will make a lot of money.
Of course this has naturally led to a lot of corruption, but the Unseelie are very mask-off about this. They don't follow the rules and they don't pretend to, because there are no rules here. Whatever you can secure is yours in the Unseelie Court. The only official authority in this kingdom is Queen Morgause.
Because there are few laws, there isn't much stability either. The rich can become poor at the drop of a hat. The poor can suddenly become rich as well. It's a very chaotic place in every respect.
Unlike the Seelie Court, which sits stagnant like a puddle, the Unseelie Court is in constant flux like a rolling wave.

Trust me ~ Morgana & Morgause ~ post S2
"You don't trust me?" Morgause demanded and lifted Morgana's face up by the chin. "Do you think I don't know what is the best?"
Morgana squirmed uncomfortably. She was sitting up in her bed. "That's not true, Morgause. I trust you. You're my sister and you saved me. But I'm afraid things will go wrong again. And I don't want Arthur or Gwen or innocent people to get hurt. Can we think of another way to defeat Uther...?"
Morgause released her, sighed heavily, and sat down next to her. "You're making things harder, Morgana. I didn't expect that of you after everything you've gone through."
"Please, don't think that I don't want to help, sister. I'm just..." Morgana smiled nervously.
"Alright. Here, take this, I prepared this tincture to make the remnants of the poison evaporate from your body faster." She held out a small brown glass vial to Morgana.
Morgana hesitated only for a moment, but it didn't escape Morgause's attentive gaze. "You trust me, don't you?"
"Of course." Morgana quickly drank the contents of the vial, then lay back down and covered herself with a blanket. Her eyelids grew heavy under the sleeping herbs that smelled of July dusk.
"Sleep, little sister." Morgause gently stroked Morgana's black wavy tresses, "This night will be hard on you, sorry. But it is for the good. You will always trust me from now on, and we will be well."
Morgause stood up. She had done this before; she once helped her poor sister make the right choice, guiding her. But now it was time for more drastic measures; she has waited too long and worked too hard to allow this opportunity to pass her by because of the girl's fears. The High Priestess placed a metal bowl on the table by the bed, put a mandrake root in it and set it on fire. Its viscous smoke would help Morgana find her way and never doubt again. Never.

Mod peach's executives have been decidedly dysfunctional lately, so she's going to launch right into this one before they disappear again...
In May, we got a wonderful 60 fills, created by 22 different people. All were either fic (47 fills) or art (13), and the ships were similarly focused.
Merlin/Arthur were once again topping the list at 36, and gen works second at 13. Everything else was under ten, with Merlin/Lancelot and Merlin/Arthur/Gwaine at three, Merlin/Gwaine and Merlin/Arthur/Knights at two, finally Arthur/Lancelot at one.
As for the fills themselves, they are as always hidden below the cut and sorted by ship and then by rating. Remember to check the warnings before clicking on the link, and give everyone the love they deserve!
