Circa 1930- Aunt Polly Boone from the Toe River Valley in Yancey County, NC.
Aunt Polly recalled going barefoot to the log church house with rags wrapped around her legs for warmth; "snakin' the beds" before she would dare crawl in between the covers; living in a new cabin in a wild country where one set up housekeeping with an axe, a gun, a kettle, and a pile of straw in the corner. The “painters" cried outside her cabin at night, and once she saw a bear carry off in his arms the sow they had been fattening for company.

A Room of One's Own: tulip specialist Polly Nicholson shares the beauty and industry of her glasshouse, photographs by Elliot Sheppard, words by Nell Card
The west-facing glasshouse runs along a warm edge of the walled garden and was designed 12 years ago by Foster and Pearson who manufacture glasshouses to original Victorian designs and specifications. (They built the glasshouses at both the Chelsea Physic Garden and West Dean College in Chichester.) “It looks like it has been here forever,” Polly notes.

Tbh i'm only the in the fandom because of the fanfics (the Ziva bashing fics, McGee bashing fics, and Sheppard bashing fics have my heart <3)
Some shows are great, like Criminals Minds and S.W.A.T. (well, i think they are-), but yeah, some of them like NCIS ??? THANKS UNIVERSE FANFICS EXIST-
Also, can I just say how much I love the headcanon that Rivkin (bf of Ziva that was a killer for the Mossad) was drunk when he is dead because he wanted to say to Ziva that he love Eli (Ziva dad) and not her ?? And that it's why Eli took his death personally, because he loved him ?? I saw that in a fic and now it's canon to me.

We love fics that have the ability to change our love and how we view characters <3
And I can say I’ve never personally watched a show like that, they’ve never been my cup of tea. Only law related media I’ll ever consume is Ace Attorney and that’s a fact! Polly the Parrot my beloved-

Eighteen-Thirties Thursday: Girls Will Be Boys
Tumblr media
'Behind the Scenes': an 1838 print by Paul Gavarni, showing an actress playing a male role telling her assistants to hurry up (Rijksmuseum). I enjoy the look at her neckwear being tied (and the shirt frill, although this is the twilight of frilled shirts in menswear).
Aside from fancy dress balls, which seemed to be full of women wearing male costumes and Turkish trousers, the stage was where a Romantic-era woman could be found in masculine attire. Many popular actresses were male impersonators.
Tumblr media
Madame Vestris (Lucia Elizabeth Vestris) as Little Pickle in The Spoiled Child, ca. 1830 (V&A)
Tumblr media
Mary Anne Keeley as Jack Sheppard the notorious highwayman, 1838 (British Museum).
Tumblr media
Maria Foote as 'The Little Jockey', 1831 print of leading ladies (detail). (V&A) This particular character seems to have a lot of merchandise and prints.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Madame Vestris again (V&A), in a circa 1830 print, reminding us that there was also a contemporary song about her legs.
Tumblr media
Finally—if you remember the uh, very creative play about the arctic adventures of Sir John Ross and his nephew, which appeared in a toy theatre kit in the mid-1830s (hat tip to @handfuloftime), the role of "Clara Truemore", love interest of the captain's nephew James Clark Edward Ross, is a breeches role, and Clara spends most of the play disguised as "Harry Halyard."
Tumblr media
I feel like there is something inherently queer about this, despite the long tradition of "Sweet Polly Olivers" in male drag pursuing their lovers in ballads and broadsides. I wonder how the audience perceived these characters.

Mystery’s Original Characters List
Inspired by Hails @haileyybird and my growing want to talk about them, here we have a list of my OCs. This might help you understand what I’m talking about sometimes and to know what I plan to work on.
The list is not complete and will be updated from time to time. There are OCs that don’t have docs published yet, some others gave me the idea for reader insert fics that will be linked for you to have an idea about their personality. Some of them have faceclaims, but most of the time Imlike to pick some characteristics and go with it.
A/N: As stated in The Solomons Siblings, the moodboards for the Solomons boys are not mine and belong to @tortugahoe, as well as some info about Daniel, and the amazing choice in casting. Esther was created by me, and I tried to do her moodboard as similar as I could to the rest of them.
Ask games:
Tumblr media
Daphne Scott from Nothing’s Fair in Love and War (face claim: Lily Collins)
Daphne is a former nurse that served during the war and has a close relationship with Alfie, working as his right-hand woman. She has a twin brother that died during the war. Tommy takes a liking to her when he starts working with Alfie and drama ensues with Alfie’s betrayal and Grace’s return. Her best friend, Harriet, is also a former nurse that, nowadays, owns a very known brothel in London. William, a doctor who served with both of them during the war is someone Daphne carries really close to heart, even when people expect their relationship to be awkward because they’re former lovers. She is a high-class lady that willingly chose to detach herself from her family for thinking differently.
Tumblr media
Agnes Stewart from Little Lamb (face claim: Emmy Rossum)
A good catholic girl. That’s how people always referred to Agnes. She comes from a very strict and almost excessively catholic family, being considered a miracle since her parents had a hard time conceiving. Agnes is sweet and kinda, too shy for her own good, and afraid to really express her opinions. That changes when she starts working for Polly and gets to meet Tommy and Alfie. Surprisingly, she develops a very close relationship with Lizzie, and slowly lets herself become her own person, distancing herself from the abusive environment she was brought up in.
Tumblr media
Eve appears in Just keep it a secret, Wanderess and Midnight in Paris
A liar and a thief. Eve navigates through life on her own. She has no roots and her loyalty is only to herself. Growing up without a family, being deceived and betrayed more than once, she learned never to trust in people. Eve leads her life and her or kin a very similar way: wrapped in secrets. You never know when she is going to show up or when she is going to live. Working as a thief, she holds leverage against all of her clients to keep herself alive, and tried very hard not to create attachments. Alfie has worked with her a few times, and introduces her to Tommy, marking the beginning of an interesting game of cat and mouse.
Tumblr media
Kathleen Sheppard inspired Better With You, Out of Time and Just Tonight
A friend, a counselor, a lover, a partner, a daughter... Kath has been many thing through her life, but she was always her own person. Growing up in Watery Lane, the only daughter of a Scottish mother and British father, she was always very close to the Shelby’s. Kath helped Polly keep things up and running during the war, when she lost both her parents. Tommy and her always treated each other as best-friends, having crossed that line a few times, becoming lovers of some sorts after he came back from the war. A complicated relationship that had many ups and down because the two of them are too strong headed to admit their feeling for fear to what it would mean to their friendship in case it didn’t worked out. The thing they never realized is that the relationship had been working just alright for a long time.
Tumblr media
Georgiana Abbott inspired Heaven in Hiding and Sold my soul to a three-piece
The village girl that wanted more than people thought she should. Georgiana grew up in the same village Michael was brought to, creating a strong bond with the boy. She has a younger sister and started having a complicated relationship with her parents once she voiced her aspirations of going to college. They wanted her to find a good husband and be a housewife, but Georgiana refused to settle down for anything less than what she dreamed of: becoming a lawyer. That’s how she chose to leave the village and go to Oxford to try her luck. Her family chose to cut any ties with her, she made her way through school with hard work and some unpleasant situations, having lost contact with everyone from the village, including Michael. Georgiana found an unexpected companion in Daniel Solomons, and after graduating ended up winning a case against Shelby Company Ltd, getting to encounter Michael again and meet his new family, including a very unpleased Tommy.
Tumblr media
Aurelia Changretta inspired Don’t know how to stop
The youngest of the Changretta children is used at working in the shadows. She has always been a good listener, learning quickly and giving advice to both her father and older brothers. Aurelia knew that the mafia would never allow her to work for them, it didn’t matter how good she was, how sharp she was, and she made her peace with it, finding a way to be involved on the business without being upfront about it. She married at a young age to the son of the Don of the Sicilian mafia, the Cosa Nostra, only to lose hi. During the war. After her husband’s death, she stayed living with her father-in-law, until John Shelby beat up her brother Angel, and interference was needed to avoid a blood bath. Always the strategist, Aurelia saw in the vendetta a way to gain more power by marrying the Peaky Blinders leader, Thomas Shelby.
Tumblr media
Laura Shelby from I want a divorce
Bond to Tommy since before the war, Laura had learned to navigate through changes. She was the oldest child, the one that took care of the house and her siblings so her parents could work. That worked at home, as a seamstress to help with the bills. That is until she got pregnant and was almost thrown out of her family home for giving herself up to a gypsy. Then learning how to deal with leaving with the Shelby’s, with Tommy changing when his father went away and his mother killed herself. They had to go through the lost of their child and then the war. Life has made them both colder, harder, but even then, Laura never thought that she would have to deal with her husband’s unfaithfulness. Not when she was expecting their child.
Tumblr media
Esther Solomons appears in The Solomons Siblings and Hanukkah with the Solomons (face claim: Anna Von Klinski)
The youngest siblings of the Solomons household is a girl that has all her brothers wrapped around her finger. Esther, named after Hadassa, know and Queen Esther, that marked a Persian king and was responsible for gaining the Jews permission for the Jews to kill their enemies when one of the king’s advisors gets permission to get all the Jews in the kingdom killed. She certainly takes the courage of her namesake, fighting prejudice and resistance while she was pursuing her studies and then, later, when she earned a place in her brother’s business.
Tumblr media
Daniel Solomons appears in The Solomons Siblings and Hanukkah with the Solomons (face claim: Charlie Hunnam)
As the second youngest, Charlie is a little bit spoiled. He gets away with a lot stuff that he shouldn’t. A very well mannered and charming guy, that actually made his way to college, but ended up being expelled for fighting. Daniel is probably the most well tempered of all of his siblings, but when he looses control it does get bloody. And he likes it. Deciding to stay around his family, Daniel ended up taking care of the jewelry business, something he takes pride in.
Tumblr media
Charlie Solomons appears in The Solomons Siblings and Hanukkah with the Solomons (face claim: Travis Fimmel)
Being the middle child is not an easy task and is probably one of the reasons why Charlie has anger management issues. He is always picking a fight, for whatever reason, and just doesn’t know how to stop. Charlie motto is “beat first, ask questions never”. A good reason for Alfie closing him to take care of the man around the distillery and the protection business around Camden. He thought about staying in the army after the war, but ended up deciding to come back home because he’s too attached to his family.
Tumblr media
Henry Solomons appears in The Solomons Siblings and Hanukkah with the Solomons (face claim: Logan Marshall-Green)
The oldest of the Solomons’ siblings never wanted tomatoes part in the family business. This fact cause many disagreements between the boys, especially with Alfie, until Henry decided to leave and start a life on his own. Sometimes he resents his family for not supporting him on his decisions, but he also blames himself for not having tried harder to stay with them and help with whatever he could. Even stranger from his family, Henry tried to keep an eye on them and check if everything is alright. He does take part in family meetings and holidays, in part because of his mother and sister, in part because he misses the chaos that the five of them create when together. Henry became a doctor an served during the war as one.
Tumblr media
Crystal “Icebreaker” Kazansky (Fandom: Top Gun: Maverick)
More than just the daughter of Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Crystal is also a woman that goes after what she wants. Following her father’s footsteps, Crystal enlists in the Navy and is later selected to the Top Gun program, graduating as the top of her class, just like her father. Her callsign is “Icebreaker” because people say she’s the only one able to break her father’s composure while flying. Crystal is also known as a very easygoing person that is able to get out of any situation with a smile and a snarky remark. She has an older brother that is a civilian engineer and also a couple of nephews. Maverick is her godfather and her mother partially blames him for her addiction to speed and choice of career.

Pulling Out the Snake's Fang
Today's inspiration comes from:
Take Back Your Power
by Deborah Liu
"You don’t choose what happens to you, but you have the power to choose how you are affected by it. "~ Nona Jones
"'On June 17, 2015, Polly Sheppard attended Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. That night, Dylann Roof, a self-professed white supremacist, arrived and spent an hour in the study with his victims before pulling out a gun during prayer time. In all, he shot twelve people, nine of whom lost their lives, including Emanuel AME pastor and State Senator Clementa C. Pinckney.
Polly witnessed her friends being gunned down in front of her, and when Dylann reached her, she recalled him saying, “I’m not going to shoot you. I’m going to leave you here to tell the story.”
Dylann Roof wanted to start a race war that day. He chose Emanuel AME — also known as Mother Emanuel, the oldest AME church in the South — as the spark to ignite that war. But what he encountered was something wholly different. Though he meant to terrorize and devastate, relatives and friends of the victims stood up one by one just a few days later in court and told him they forgave him.
They released the poison that he had inflicted on their community, taking that anger and turning it into grace.
News of their act of forgiveness took over the news and drowned out Roof’s message of hate.
I met Polly at a private screening of Emanuel, a movie about the shooting. I sat next to her, and as we watched the movie side by side, I sensed her peace, even as the terrible events of that day unfolded on screen. To be willing to relive the worst day of your life over and over and still speak up about how love could triumph over hate took an act of courage I could barely conceive.
June 17, 2015, was also the day that allowed Polly to find her voice. It wasn’t an easy process. The anger and depression were all-consuming. At first, she wasn’t sure if she was ready to forgive Roof’s actions, but she ultimately found an inner strength in the act of forgiveness. This led her to share her story over the next five years. A year after the shooting, she said, “To heal, we must forgive. That is what I learned this past year. The shooter in Charleston had hate in his heart. The shooter in Orlando had hate in his heart. And the shooter in Dallas did, too. So much hate, too much. But as Scripture says, love never fails. So, I choose love.”
Polly took back her power through forgiveness. She couldn’t undo what had been done, but she could rise above it and bring some good out of it. “By taking back my power,” she said, “I realize that I am not a victim. I am victorious. I had faith before, but now I have gained much more faith and strength.”
Knowing she couldn’t change the past, Polly decided to change the future instead. By turning her worst moments into something she would spend the rest of her life sharing with the world, she brought light out of the darkness. Her words and testimony helped heal a nation struggling with violence and racial tension. Now in her mid-seventies, she continues that journey by helping raise money to fund young people who want to enter nursing, specifically serving in the prison system, where she spent her career.
"Forgiveness is for the forgiver, not for the forgiven."
— Deborah Liu
Forgiveness is Freedom
Most of us will never face the stark reality of watching our friends die, of having to decide how to forgive what feels unforgivable. But for many of us, in each of our hearts, there is someone or something that holds us back, and those wounds continue to fester.
As the most senior member of the Christians at Facebook community, I was invited to be the opening speaker at the Emanuel movie screening, nearly four years to the day after the shooting. At first, I considered turning it down. What the organizers didn’t know was that I had grown up in a town outside Charleston, less than twenty miles from where the shooting happened, and I had avoided going back for two decades.
The amount of verbal abuse and threats I received during my childhood scarred me in ways I never allowed myself to process. I had never fully come to terms with what it was like to grow up experiencing that level of mistreatment, and so I coped with it through avoidance. But it still haunted me. To stand on a stage and speak about the ultimate forgiveness of families who had lost those they loved felt contradictory when I myself had never come to terms with the trauma of my childhood. This discrepancy forced me to take a long, hard look at how much anger I still harbored. Sitting next to Polly, hugging her during the movie, and watching her tell her story to the world taught me what true grace looks like. If she could look back with dignity and forgiveness, then I could do no less.
Forgiveness creates its own power and soothes the pain of old wounds. It allows us to break free of the hold the past has over us. But it isn’t easy. I wish I could say that that one moment of decision changed everything, but I had yet to learn that forgiveness is both a choice and a process. Like any other kind of healing, it happens over time. The catharsis is gradual; it teaches us patience as we learn to let go of our pain.
Imagine the hurt of being wronged as a snake’s fang embedded in your skin. As long as it’s there, the poison continues to infect you, and the wound can’t heal. Your suffering continues, and resentment grows. The pain of removing the fang — of choosing to forgive — can be immense in the moment, but its benefits to your psyche cannot be overstated. It not only gives you a chance to heal and recover, but it stops the poison from continuing to enter your body. No longer festering, the wound can now close as your body filters out the remaining resentment, anger, and distress. Removing the fang is the first step to becoming whole again.
Though forgiveness is a powerful force, in American society it is sometimes viewed as a weakness, as if by forgiving someone, we are letting them off the hook for their transgressions. What we don’t realize is that forgiveness is for the forgiver, not for the forgiven. Not only does it yield psychological benefits, but it also yields physical and emotional dividends.
Dr. Loren Toussaint, professor of psychology at Luther College, has studied forgiveness for over two decades. According to his research, those who score high on measures of forgiveness showed evidence of major personal benefits, especially to mental health.
In one study, his team demonstrated that among those living with a high level of stress, those who also exhibited high levels of forgiveness had fewer negative mental health outcomes.
Simply put, forgiveness protects our minds from the negative consequences of stress.
Not everyone is asked to offer the grand gesture of forgiveness that Polly has displayed, but a grand gesture isn’t always necessary. Freedom is pulling out the snake’s fang to stop the resentment and pain from stealing your peace of mind. Only in this way can we process the hurt and find a path to peace."'

Dylann Roof Killed Her Friends. Now, Activists Need Her Help.
Dylann Roof Killed Her Friends. Now, Activists Need Her Help.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — With the opportunity to make South Carolina the 49th state to pass a hate crimes law nearly gone, supporters turned to one of the survivors of the most heinous racist attack in modern America to make their case Wednesday. They showed a two minute video of Polly Sheppard in the Senate chamber where the bill has been stuck for months with eight Republicans senators objecting…

Police report: Macheath.
A general rapscallion, police were first alerted about a chivalrous highwayman who was gaining notoriety on Beggar's Opera Ave. After the German band Brecht and the Shockers released their no.1 track Mack the Knife, based on the culprit, his notoriety only grew. The general public seem to be enthralled by this villain, whose story is eerily reminiscent of Jack Sheppard. Husbands loath him, women love him, and consequences don’t seem to know who he is. While we almost managed to hang him, he was pardoned at the last minute, and joined his (supposedly) true wife Polly in what can only be described as a shameful day for justice. After this, things seem to go off the rails, as he was supposedly seen trying to escape unnoticed to Tasmania with Jenny Diver on a criminal deportation ship. Along the way the ship was attacked by pirates in the South Pasific, with the only evidence of its destruction being a small message in a bottle which washed up in Australia reading: “I killed Macheath, so there is no point looking for him really. He is remarkably dead, and I plan on keeping him that way”. Yours Truely, Captain Crook, Pirate King. So as it is clear to see, he is clearly dead and should not be looked for.
Officer Tiger Brown.

Charleston church shooting
On the evening of June 17, 2015, a mass shooting took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtownCharleston, South Carolina, United States. The church is one of the United States' oldest black churches and has long been a site for community organizing around civil rights. Nine people were killed, including the senior pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, astate senator. A tenth victim was also shot, but survived.
In the immediate aftermath, police sought a white male later identified as Dylann Roof, who was captured the morning after the attack in Shelby, North Carolina.[9] The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime and as a potential act of domestic terrorism by the United States Department of Justice. Roof has been charged with nine counts of murder by the State of South Carolina. The shooting is the deadliest attack to occur at an American place of worship since a 1991 shooting at a Buddhist temple in Waddell, Arizona, in which nine people also died.
The 199-year-old church has played an important role in the history of South Carolina, including the slavery era and the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, and the Black Lives Matter movement in the 2010s The church was founded in 1816 and is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal Church in the South, often referred to as "Mother Emanuel." It is the oldest historically black congregationsouth of Baltimore. When one of the church's co-founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to start a slave rebellion in Charleston in 1822, 35 people, including Vesey, were executed and the church was burned down. Charleston citizens accepted that the slave rebellion was to begin at the stroke of midnight on June 16, 1822, and to erupt the following day; the shooting occurred on the 193rd anniversary of the thwarted uprising. The rebuilt church was formally shuttered with other all-black congregations by the city in 1834, meeting in secret until 1865 when it was formally reorganized, acquired the name Emanuel ("God with us"), and rebuilt upon a design by Denmark Vesey's son. The current structure dates from 1891.
At around 9:05 p.m. EDT on June 17, 2015, the Charleston Police Department responded to calls of a shooting at Emanuel A.M.E. Church.[14] A man described as white, with sandy-blond hair, around 21 years old and 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) in height, wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans, opened fire on the church during a Bible study attended by Pinckney with a .45-caliber handgun and then fled.
All of the victims were black, consisting of six women and three men. Eight died at the scene, while the ninth, Daniel Simmons, died in the hospital. They were all killed by multiple gunshots fired at close range. One other unidentified person was wounded, but survived. Five individuals survived the shooting unharmed, including Felicia Sanders, mother of Tywanza, and her granddaughter, and Polly Sheppard, a bible study member. Pinckney's wife and daughter were also inside the building during the shooting. The fatalities were identified as:
Dylann Roof (born April 3, 1994) was named by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as the suspected killer after his father and uncle contacted police to positively identify him upon seeing security photos of him in the news. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and was living in largely African-American Eastover at the time of the attack. Roof was unemployed. One image from his Facebook page showed him wearing a jacket decorated with the flags of two nations noted for their white supremacist and racial segregation policies, apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia. Another online photo showed Roof sitting on the hood of his car with an ornamental license plate with a Confederate flag on it.
