Good News - June 8-14
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $Kaybarr1735! And if you tip me and give me a way to contact you, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week!
1. Rare foal born on estate for first time in 100 years
Tumblr media
“The Food Museum at Abbot's Hall in Stowmarket, Suffolk, is home to a small number of Suffolk Punch horses - a breed considered critically endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. A female foal was born on Saturday and has been named Abbots Juno to honour the last horse born at the museum in 1924. [...] Juno is just one of 12 fillies born so far this year in the country and she could potentially help produce more of the breed in the future.”
2. The cement that could turn your house into a giant battery
Tumblr media
“[Scientists] at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have found a way of creating an energy storage device known as a supercapacitor from three basic, cheap materials – water, cement and a soot-like substance called carbon black. [... Supercapacitators] can charge much more quickly than a lithium ion battery and don't suffer from the same levels of degradation in performance. [... Future applications of this concrete might include] roads that store solar energy and then release it to recharge electric cars wirelessly as they drive along a road [... and] energy-storing foundations of houses.”
3. New road lights, fewer dead insects—insect-friendly lighting successfully tested
Tumblr media
“Tailored and shielded road lights make the light source almost invisible outside the illuminated area and significantly reduces the lethal attraction for flying insects in different environments. [...] The new LED luminaires deliver more focused light, reduce spill light, and are shielded above and to the side to minimize light pollution. [... In contrast,] dimming the conventional lights by a factor of 5 had no significant effect on insect attraction.”
4. When LGBTQ health is at stake, patient navigators are ready to help
Tumblr media
“[S]ome health care systems have begun to offer guides, or navigators, to get people the help they need. [... W]hether they're just looking for a new doctor or taking the first step toward getting gender-affirming care, "a lot of our patients really benefit from having someone like me who is there to make sure that they are getting connected with a person who is immediately going to provide a safe environment for them." [... A navigator] also connects people with LGBTQ community organizations, social groups and peer support groups.”
5. Tech company to help tackle invasive plant species
Tumblr media
“Himalayan balsam has very sugary nectar which tempts bees and other pollinators away from native plants, thereby preventing them from producing seed. It outcompetes native plant species for resources such as sunlight, space and nutrients. [...] The volunteer scheme is open to all GWT WilderGlos users who have a smartphone and can download the Crowdorsa app, where they can then earn up to 25p per square meter of Balsam removed.”
6. [Fish & Wildlife] Service Provides Over $14 Million to Benefit Local Communities, Clean Waterways and Recreational Boaters
Tumblr media
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is distributing more than $14 million in Clean Vessel Act grants to improve water quality and increase opportunities for fishing, shellfish harvests and safe swimming in the nation’s waterways. By helping recreational boaters properly dispose of sewage, this year’s grants will improve conditions for local communities, wildlife and recreational boaters in 18 states and Guam.”
7. Bornean clouded leopard family filmed in wild for first time ever
Tumblr media
“Camera traps in Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo have captured a Bornean clouded leopard mother and her two cubs wandering through a forest. It's the first time a family of these endangered leopards has been caught on camera in the wild, according [to] staff from the Orangutan Foundation who placed camera traps throughout the forest to learn more about the elusive species.”
8. Toy library helps parents save money 'and the planet'
Tumblr media
“Started in 2015 by Annie Berry, South Bristol's toy library aims to reduce waste and allow more children access to more - and sometimes expensive - toys. [...] Ms Berry partnered with the St Philips recycling centre on a pilot project to rescue items back from landfill, bringing more toys into the library. [...] [P]eople use it to support the environment, take out toys that they might not have the space for at home or be able to afford, and allow children to pick non-gender specific toys.”
9. Chicago Receives $3M Grant to Inventory Its Trees and Create Plan to Manage City’s Urban Forest
Tumblr media
“The Chicago Park District received a $1.48 million grant [“made available through the federal Inflation Reduction Act”] to complete a 100% inventory of its estimated 250,000 trees, develop an urban forestry management plan and plant 200 trees in disadvantaged areas with the highest need. As with the city, development of the management plan is expected to involve significant community input.”
10. Strong Public Support for Indigenous Co-Stewardship Plan for Bears Ears National Monument
Tumblr media
“[The NFW has a] plan to collaboratively steward Bears Ears National Monument to safeguard wildlife, protect cultural resources, and better manage outdoor recreation. The plan was the result of a two-year collaboration among the five Tribes of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition and upholds Tribal sovereignty, incorporates Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and responsibly manages the monument for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation while ensuring the continued health of the ecosystem.”

BIRDS OF COLLISION
«Birds of collision» bridges the gap between generations, culture and ideas in the captivating background of Palermo. [1] Palermo as a node in an expanded geography of movements – of people, capital, goods, data, seeds, germs.
In times where [2] Communication ceases we bring together influential voices, wheter they are from pages of history or shaping the world of today. [3] The goal of the exercise, as always, is to cultivate wakeful nondistraction and vivid spaciousness. Through this cross-pollination aka Ornithophily conveyed by our birds of knowledge [4] there will be more openness, more communication – [5] cross pollination is necessary in order to avoid artistic stagnation. Enjoy with us [6] the Ecstasy of Communication. [7] Today we are busy learning how to cultivate the innumerable projections. [8] But the alternative can cross its boundary. [9] We want to break open the shortenings of our time, cultivate them.
With no host nor intermediary since a host can contract a parasite and be corrupted by laws of nature. [10] The parasite takes all and gives nothing; the host gives all and takes nothing. [11] In its very life and by its practices, the parasite routinely confuses use and abuse [12] The para site would destroy the host without realizing it. [13] This momentary quality is highly fertile for the responsive mind thus [14] Resilient ecosystems have greater diversity of species and us therefore no host.
Tune in to be part of these illuminating conversations that transcend time and borders, all from the captivating city of Palermo on the island of Sicily. Don’t get [15] Stuck in the mind. [16] Let us cultivate the varied so that the intellect remains alive and active. [17] In fact, the Earth speaks to us in terms of forces, bonds, and interactions, and that's enough to make a contract.
“Birds of collision” invites you to join our [18] network of folds on diversity and intellectual discovery [19] that is, in fact, digital.
Please accept the terms and conditions and don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe!

Episode: Valley of the Quest - "Nietzsche vs. Tyson: Cosmic Smackdown" Rating: ★★★★★ [20] That was a real sharp dialogue all the way through. @NietzscheNonsense is in deadly anguish, because he takes life seriously, because he cannot bear existence without meaning. [21] To get pregnant by the Holy Spirit alone — that really is a bit much! [22] But more important is the extreme diversity of the domains they explore. @CosmicExplainer To establish the existence of spirits in the world, you demand conclusive proofs. [23] The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you. [24] But The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it. This podcast was [25] A purely emotional argument., stirring the age-old question: [26] what is the meaning of life? [27] What remains to be said? Hopefully, we’ll unravel more in a future episode. [28] We have had the joy of learning the truth about the universe. -Galileo Galilei
Episode: Valley of Love - "Emma vs. Kant: Love vs. Logic Cage Match" Rating: ★★★★★ [29] Look how bright they are! Remarkable @HermioneInRealLife [30] Though she be but little, she is fierce. @KantStopLaughing [31] His smart and witty remarks are truly refreshing in the midst of our dull witted society.”  @HermioneInRealLife’s convincing arguments [32] arose from love of self and love of praise, they ought not to be considered real virtues but vices. And although @KantStopLaughing [33] Honorable and wise dear sir and friend of mine - argued with [34] logic, rhetoric, physics, metaphysics, mathematics, and reasoning in general, there are good arguments proving false as well as true conclusions? A podcast everybody should listen to [35] I know what I’m talking about, and I know from experience. - William Shakespeare
Episode: Valley of Knowledge - "Elon vs. Kierkegaard: Tech vs. Existential Angst" Rating: ★★★★ [36] They have well spoken. @TeslaTechTycoon clearly believes [37] He is the patron god of humanism and technology while @KierkegaardInsight deludes into thinking to have [38] brought philosophy from heaven to earth. @TeslaTechTycoon @KierkegaardInsight provide us with a discourse [39] in which varying paradigms may easily be recognized that all refer to relations between nature and rationality, or between philosophy and technology, and the resulting different conceptions of science. I firmly believe this podcast to have [40] helped to create the foundations for our ongoing understanding of science and philosophy [41] For technology is, after all, there for people and not people for technology. - Ludger Hovestadt
Episode: Valley of Detachment - "Marie Kondo vs. Epicurus: Clutter Battle Royale" Rating: ★★★ [42] Impressive structures were built. [43] When they spoke of “acts,” they were thinking mostly about ritual acts. @TidyMarie you advocate that [44] Social order requires spatial order. Your motto: ‚'nothing more, nothing less'emphasizes the power of minimalist existence. [45] But she also said she’s angry with herself sometimes. Anger, an unexpected companion in the realm of tidying up. [46] Of what material does it consist ? @Epicurious on the other hand - [47] Your reason is no more shocked in choosing one rather than the other, since you must of necessity choose... But your happiness? [48] Dynamic or variable inconsistency, however, is more destabilizing and less predictable. [49] He adds that we should not trouble ourselves with things that are not in our power. [50] A hedonist who knows shame - [51] That is, equipped with soul. - Marina Abrahamovic
Episode: Valley of Unity - "Greta vs. Descartes: Environment vs. Doubt Throwdown" Rating: ★★★★★ [52] Simple and pure, and maddeningly fair! @Descartoon regards [53] The man made social environment as an extension of man's physical body. [54] If man is shaped by environment, his environment must be made human. @GretaRoastsTate proclaims that [55] This led to pollution and the deterioration of nature, but my belief is that [56] The nature of nature is social, and therefore political. [57] In harmony and with the utmost grace,Blood new refreshed rushed from my happy heart And joy re-found wrote laugh lines on my face whilst listening to this witty masterpiece. - Leoluca Orlando
Episode: Valley of Wonderment - "Attenborough vs. Camus: Nature's Stand-up Comedy" Rating: ★★★★★ Although their world is primarily centered around the discussed topics, they embellish the conversation with their humor and sarcasm. [58] And this Play lets us search for some lost sense of wonder. While their responses are humorous, one can't help but wonder if Attenborough sometimes forgets that he doesn't have to translate everything into animal terms. For instance, when @AlbertAbsurdity asked why @NatureExplorer [59] allows them to destroy a forest he's always protected, Attenborough responded in his typical documentary voice, [60]'Can I take on that kind of monster? Carrion birds, I'm already retreating!' It was genuinely hilarious. However, [61] after a hearty laugh, he reassumes his usual mien and says, [62] From this perspective, construction should not lead us to mutilate or destroy the order and visible traces of the past. Instead, it should be about planning for a balanced continuation of the past into the future, without altering the natural morphology or erasing the signs of human presence.' So, even though Attenborough's delivery can be cringe-worthy, he knows what he's talking about. On the other hand, @AlbertAbsurdity joked about how everyone talks about nature and how we harm it, but at the same time, we are part of nature. [63] Thus, everyone is both the other and themselves. Ultimately, they were discussing a serious topic in an unserious way. [64] Of course, we joined in the laughter, laughing until tears flowed, indicating a deeper connection between us all." -Michel Serres
Episode: Valley of Poverty and Annihilation - "Dalai Lama vs. Engels: Selflessness Smack Talk" Rating: ★★★★★ [65] Hearing them, I realized that they weren’t at all smarter than the rest of us. @DalaughLama for me represents [66] Actual selflessness." Although I’m sure @CityofEngels would argue that [67] “Egoism” and “altruism” are both one sided qualities arising out of the perversion of man’s, “natural goodness.” Certainly @CityofEngels [68] money went largely toward books, which to him were like sacred objects, providing ballast for his mind. [69] He must, however, look upon history as history and not as a source for precepts! [70] Everyone on Earth, they'd tell us, was carrying around an unseen history, and that alone deserved some tolerance. To @DalaughLama [71] the religious question remains. In his eyes [72] We must constantly choose between health and sanity on the one hand, and spiritual pleasures on the other but [73] He knew that the senses, no less than the soul, have their spiritual mysteries to reveal. I believe in becoming and that [74] Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own and [75] If you don’t get out there and define yourself, you’ll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others. If you don’t know where to start than start by listening this podcast because [76] When you don’t know what’s going on in the world you’re at an definite disadvantage. -Michele Obama

Global VCs bullish on Expo2020 Dubai
Tumblr media
The UAE will accelerate its efforts more aggressively in the coming months to welcome talents from across the globe as it intends to offer its innovative entrepreneurial test-bed for its startup ecosystem, and for global startups to expand in the region. The Expo2020 Dubai will be a great platform for exchanging and sharing knowledge, which will pave the way for various avenues to innovation in the tech world. Global accelerators, venture capitalists, and mentors are already in the region scouting for the best deals and enthusiastic to be part of the UAE's historic growth. US-based 500 Startups - a venture capital firm with presence in 74 countries - is very optimistic that the Expo 2020 Dubai mega event will bring leaders and innovators from around the world to the heart of the emirate, creating an immense opportunity for cross-pollination and serendipity in the region. Courtney Powell, chief operating officer, 500Startups, said: "The UAE startup ecosystem is rapidly accelerating. I've met fantastic founders building exciting businesses whose impact will be felt even beyond the UAE. I've also had the privilege of meeting leaders in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and it's clear that there's support for making the UAE a world leader in tech and innovation are at the highest levels." 500 Startups has invested in over 2,300 companies worldwide, approximately 150 of which are from the Mena region, and 30 plus investments in Dubai alone. As the most active early stage venture capital firm in the world, as reported by Pitchbook. "We know the market well and are excited about investing further in the region and collaborating with premier partners in the UAE to see even greater success," said Powell. "500 Startups does not look at the UAE as simply a place to invest in from afar. We have deep partnerships here. Abu Dhabi Financial Group is an anchor investor in our flagship global fund which invests in the top companies from our 14 regional funds around the world. Over the next few months, we're scouting for the best locations and partnerships in the region to further increase our on-the-ground presence and get even more involved with the ecosystem." Another global accelerator Techstars with a network of 1,600 companies with a market cap of $17 billion under Techstars accelerator portfolio has already consolidated its operations in Dubai. Vijay Tirathrai, managing director, Techstars, said: "The Expo will be a stimulus for innovation, and opportunity for start-ups looking for inspiration and potential for collaboration with nations around the world. It also will help start-ups forming smart partnerships with larger corporations and governmental agencies to showcase their technologies for to demonstrate proof of concept." The UAE is now a vibrant start-up ecosystem with an increased number of accelerators and corporate innovation programmes being launched. For instance Techstars, has just launched its second accelerator at Hub71 in Abu Dhabi. "In the UAE we have seen an all time number of deals and funding valuations raised by start-ups thus far in 2019. The crowning moment in UAE has also seen a historic liquidation event with the $3 billion Careem deal. This augurs well for budding entrepreneurs who have become more confident of both local investor community and increasingly foreign interests in UAE start-ups," said Tirathrai. Techstars is launching their second accelerator programme in UAE which will commence in January 2020 at the Hub71 in Abu Dhabi. Backed by Mubadala Investment company, the programme will have a broad sector interest, such as ICT, energy, healthcare, petrochemicals, cyber security for example. Start-ups which uses AI, Machine Learning, Blockchain, IOT, Robotics, and AR/VR technological use cases will be of interest. Techstars aims to make 10 new investments by January 2020. In terms of funding, Magnitt reported that 2018 saw a record number of 366 startup deals across the Mena region with the UAE accounting for the biggest share of funding (70 per cent of the total funding). The UAE remained the largest recipient of startup funding in the first half of 2019 with 26 per cent of the total number of deals and 66 per cent of the total investment amount in Mena. Around 130 institutions invested in Mena-based startups in H1 2019, up 30 per cent from H1 2018. In addition, 30 per cent of them came from outside the Mena region. Walid Hanna, founder and CEO, Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP), said: "With its supportive environment and world-class infrastructure, the UAE has developed the most advanced tech ecosystem in the Mena region and attracted a favorable concentration of entrepreneurs, angel investors, incubators, accelerators and VC funds. With the large investments taking place recently, the pace and size of exits has also accelerated compared to previous periods with Souq, Careem, Namshi and others." The Expo 2020 will inevitably draw attention to the startup ecosystem in Dubai and the UAE as a whole. The event is expected to bring in 25 million visitors and startups will therefore get access to a large number of organisations which will be attending Expo2020 - this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for sourcing global clients and business partners. In addition, there will be initiatives that incentivize innovation under the umbrella of the global summit such as Expo Live, a $100 million initiative that will deploy a combination of grants, challenge prizes and knowledge-sharing events focused on the universal drivers of progress. Two years ago this month, when Elon Musk revealed the unfinished Tesla Model 3 to the world, I plunked down my thousand bucks for a spot on the list. Now, the (more) affordable Tesla has become a real car, one that just won Popular Mechanics Car of the Year. The factory is cranking out more than 2,000 per week. And my number has come up.
Sort of. Here's what happens when Tesla emails you that "Your Model 3 Is Ready to Order."
First of all, your Model 3 is not ready-not unless you want the tricked-out "First Production" version that features 310 miles of range and all the premium upgrades, which jacks up the cost to $49,000. This much we knew. If you want a dual-motor all-wheel-drive 3, you've got to wait a little longer. I want the base model with 220 miles of range, the one that costs 35 grand before the options, which means I'll be waiting until late 2018.

Exclusive: Survey finds startups drifting away from offices, post COVID-19
Early-stage startups are confident of re-opening their offices in the wake of the COVID-19 within the next six months. But there will be changes.
An exclusive survey compiled by Founders Forum, with TechCrunch, found 63% of those surveyed said they would only re-open in either 1-3 months or 3-6 months — even if the government advises that it is safe to do so before then. A minority have re-opened their offices, while 10% have closed their office permanently. The full survey results can be found here.
However, there will clearly be long-term impact on the model of office working, with a majority of those surveyed saying they would now move to either a flexible remote working model (some with permanent offices, some without), but only a small number plan a “normal” return to work. A very small number plan to go fully “remote.” Many cited the continuing benefits of face-to-face interaction when trying to build the team culture so crucial with early-stage companies.
Massive office closures during pandemic Of the 328 that answered the survey, 84% said they had closed their office during the COVID-19 pandemic; 5% said they had not; and 8% said it was not applicable (i.e. no office to close). The majority of those answering were at seed or pre-seed stage, with a minority past Series A stage.
Crucially, a clear majority of respondents (66%) said the need to return to the office was not “business critical,” while 33% thought it was. Right now, startups are closely divided over feeling the need to return to the office, with 46% saying they did feel a need, while 53% said they did not.
The survey was launched by TechCrunch and U.K. nonprofit Founders Forum in order to assess how startups will work in the future, in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on office working and the shift to “Work From Home” policies. Of the 328 answers, 61% were from the U.K., 20% from the U.S. and the rest from other countries.
“Missing the power of face to face problem solving and building teams”
Founders Forum’s Brent Hoberman, who initiated the study, commented on the results: “The results prove both that early-stage tech founders are adaptable and that entrepreneurship is one of the best-suited professions to remote work. The majority of early-stage founders haven’t seen productivity take a hit during this period, but it remains to be seen what happens to creative output, team culture and training over the longer term. Furthermore, there are clearly opportunities for new types of even more flexible shared social workspaces with a vast majority of those surveyed still seeing value in face-to-face interaction.”
Remote working ups productivity, but impacts culture Remote working during COVID-19 appears not to have impacted output, with 55% of startups saying they had worked more than normal, 30% the same hours, and 13% fewer hours.
In answer to the question: “Are you going to permanently change how and where your team works together?”: 48% said they would adopt a more flexible working arrangement (e.g. remote work days); 33% will adopt a remote-first setup (e.g. rented space for key meetings/workshops); 13% plan a normal return to work; and just 4% will adopt a fully remote configuration.
In terms of plans to re-open offices, 36% planned to re-open in 1-3 months “as soon as government advises that it is safe to do so”; 27% in 3-6 months “even if the government advises that it is safe to do so before then”; 16% answered “It’s already open – employees have been visiting if they feel comfortable”; 10% said “We have closed the office permanently”; and 9% said they planned to re-open in 6-12 months “even if the government advises that it is safe to do so before then.”
Given a full choice in the matter, 81% of those surveyed said they would prefer a hybrid of office and remote work, with only 11% wanting to go remote full time and 8% returning to an office full time. And 83% wanted to have set days when the whole team is in the office together.
Commenting on why they thought re-opening an office — in some form — was business-critical, comments from respondents included:
• “My employees are looking to return to work given wanting space from home confinement”
• “Need for top management sessions where in-person is much more productive than remote video calls”
• “Missing the power of face to face problem solving and building teams”
• “Ability to support early-career employees and bring on new ones”
• “I believe either fully remote or fully in-person setups are effective. A halfway house is ineffective.”
• “Too difficult to achieve the cross-pollination and high-velocity communication needed at our early stage.”
• “Culture. Younger team members can’t work from home all the time (shared accommodation). Some parents need the office to focus.”
• “We’re a biotech company and need to work from our labs”
• “We do order fulfillment from our warehouse.”
• “Team members ask for it as they cannot stand anymore working alone in their apartment”
Most startups are offering remote work options either to “some” employees (52%) or to all employees (31%). Some 16% offered no remote working at all, especially in areas like biotech where remote working from a lab is not possible.
Office spaces still adapting There were mixed results when startups were asked if they had renegotiated their lease as a result of COVID-19, with 16% of those on a short lease saying they had and were successful, but 16% saying they had, but had not been able to renegotiate. Some 14% on a long lease were successful in the renegotiation, 14% said they were still in negotiation and 11% had canceled the membership of their co-working space.
Some 41% of startups or their landlords had not performed a workplace risk assessment, 25% had, while 33% still planned to.
Offices appear to be responding well, with either 40% having already introduced measures to improve the safety of workplaces or 34% planning to, while 25% had not, probably because they do not have an office or use co-working spaces.
Most people (58%) said they felt the work they perform remotely is “trusted and respected equally to the work I perform in the workplace.” Most (50%) said their home setup was “OK, but not ideal.”
WFH impacts working practices When asked “What remote productivity tools or processes have become your secret weapon during COVID-19?” notable answers included:
• Miro, trello, zoom, Asana, Airtable, Slack, Microsoft Teams (among many others).
• “Two screens.”
• “Dedicated office space at home”
• “Routine. Shutting off at 5.30pm and going for a run/walk”
• “Saying hello and prioritizing chit chat on video calls every time, even though we all have work to do, observing social graciousness remotely is even more important. “
• “Company instituted ‘Summer Fridays’ urging to not work after 1pm on Fridays – less pressure to be ‘always-on’ ”
• “Being able to step away and recharge through engaging with the family when needed during the day.”
• “Old school phone calls”
Mental health impact  Almost 80% said there had been no significant change to their mental health as a result of working remotely during COVID-19, with a slim number experiencing either a negative impact or positive.

The Rise Of TikTok | Explained By The News Cover
The News Cover: 2020 has been a year of chaos, uncertainty and grief. A global pandemic, record unemployment and nationwide protests have left people reeling. Through it all though, there's been TikTok, providing moments of levity and new dance crazes, interspersed with more serious commentary on the issues that we face. TikTok, it's like the party you want to be at, a t the moment.
You'll see hair tutorials, cooking tutorials. People can create challenges, they can create duets, th ey can interact, they can engage. T ikTok is the most downloaded app of 2020. Since its global release less than two years ago, TikTok and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin, have amassed 800 million monthly active users, more than Reddit, Snapchat or Twitter. Its parent company, ByteDance, is the most valuable startup in the world. Its reach might surprise you unless you're a member of Gen Z or the parent of one. But as millions scramble for connection amidst quarantines, more and more users of all ages are hopping aboard.
We're all just kind of going through the same thing together. And we happen to be documenting it all through TikTok. It's not all rosy, though. The Chinese-owned app faces a slew of regulatory hurdles, privacy concerns and allegations of censorship. Amidst these struggles, it's brought in a new CEO. This guy is Kevin Mayer. Formerly the Head of Streaming at Disney. That's basically what Kevin Mayer's first priority needs to be, is to make sure that Americans trust TikTok. In the long run, t hat may prove complicated. But in the short term, it hasn't prevented tens of thousands of new users from signing up.
The predecessor to TikTok was an app called Musical.ly. Founded in 2014, it provided a platform for users to create short, 15 second videos set to a song of their choice. The content mostly involved lip-syncing and dancing, and it took off quickly among preteens and teens in the U.S. This is an app that was built around the fact that there was music that was licensed to be used on this app. This was something that Musical.ly decided really to invest in, because they knew that music and sharing music was inherently social.
By July 2015, a year after its launch, Musical.ly reached number one in the iTunes app store. It continued to grow and was bought by the Beijing-based startup ByteDance for one billion dollars in 2017. ByteDance already owned Tik Tok, a similar video sharing platform, and merged the two apps less than a year later. Now TikTok's main office is in Los Angeles, California. They're essentially an American startup that is subsidized by a successful Chinese tech company. As the app has grown, it's given rise to a whole new pack of social media celebrities.
Content is public by default on TikTok, and the algorithm that determines what appears on a user's home page gives every creator the chance to put their video in front of millions. Really what we saw was a different style of humor. It wasn't the sketches that you saw on Vine, and it wasn't longer-form YouTube videos. It was meme culture or like the general public's take on a meme. What I enjoyed about it is there was some deeper humor in there if you were paying attention to the trends that were happening.
On TikTok, King uses creative video editing to make it look like he's performing magic tricks, a skill which has earned him over 44 million followers, the second most on the app as of June 2020. But at 30, King represents the rare millennial that's broken into TikTok's top ranks. Many of the most followed users are in their teens, and lip syncing and dancing remain wildly popular. So I originally started when I was 14 years old, and so I started using my facial expressions and hand motions to make these like larger than life lip sync videos. And as I grew up, I think the app also grew up. Now there's so much more that you can do.
While Martin has found her niche with dancing and lifestyle content, she says there's something out there for everyone. There's like creators who are huge when it comes to comedy, some still do lip syncing, some cooking videos, tutorials. You can do whatever you want as long as it's fun, it's quick and it catches people's eye. Stay at home orders have propelled the app's rapid growth in the United States. So between October and March, according to research fro m Comscore, its unique visitors has grown from 27 million to 52 million, so doubled in the past five months.
And within that time period, just in March alone, according to Comscore TikTok added 12 million new unique visitors. People in the U.S. on TikTok spent more time on TikTok than Instagram users spent on Instagram or Snapchat users spent on Snapchat in the month of March. That's a big deal since Snap and Instagram are two of the app's main competitors. They're all extremely popular among young users, b ut in the U.S. at least, TikTok still has some catching up to do. We estimate that this year TikTok will have 45 million users.
But Instagram, we're estimating will have over 110 million and Snapchat will have 85 million users. But TikTok is also huge abroad, especially in India and China. In China, it operates as a technically separate but very similar app called Douyin. And in the first quarter of 2020, TikTok and Douyin were downloaded 315 million times globally, a 68 percent increase over the previous year. In April, the company reached two billion overall downloads.
India is by far the app's largest market when it comes to downloads, accounting for 30.3 percent of the total. But China is definitely the largest from a revenue standpoint, accounting for about 72 percent of total spending on the app. The U.S. is third in terms of downloads and second in terms of revenue, and its influence continues to grow. Viral dances and memes have propelled a number of songs to the top of the U.S. charts, most famously, Old Town Road in 2019 . And now the moms, dads and siblings of the TikTok o bsessed have started to get in on the trends as well, learning dances and performing challenges together.
You're still laughing at them, but actually the fact that parents are getting on it, I mean they needed that demo so badly to even make it to this level that they're at now. In order to build out a sustainable revenue model, e xperts say that TikTok eventually needs to attract older users. Advertisers are going after broader demographics and especially those with purchasing power. But TikTok is not under immediate pressure to make money just yet. Its parent company ByteDance is valued at over 100 billion dollars and made three billion dollars in revenue last year.
That's because it owns a host of other, more profitable Chinese apps, most notably Douyin and a news aggregator called Toutiao. TikTok's revenue model is still very, very nascent. This is a company that has some advertising, we have some of the users starting to do sponsorships. But at the end of the day, this is a company with hundreds of millions of users here in the U.S. that's still not making as much money as it could some day. Monetization aside, many say that CEO Kevin Mayer's first priority needs to be the regulatory and privacy concerns facing the app, which stem from its Chinese ownership as well as its popularity among children.
You know, it's never been the case that so many Americans are putting so much of their visual data in the hands of a Chinese company. And as we know, the relationship between the Chinese government and Chinese corporations is a pretty tight one. While TikTok claims that all American user's data is stored within the U.S. and is not subject to Chinese law, many security experts remain skeptical. Similar concerns exists in India, where data protection laws are weaker and thus citizens are more vulnerable. Regulators are going to be very weary of that separation.
Where's the data held? What's the cross-pollination look like? A number of incidents over the years have provided ample reason for worry. An investigation by The Guardian last September revealed that TikTok moderators were instructed to censor videos related to Tiananmen Square and other content deemed sensitive by the Chinese government.
While the company claimed that these guidelines had been phased out by the time of the investigation, it still helped spur the Federal Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to open an ongoing review into ByteDance's acquisition of Musical.ly. It seems unlikely that ByteDance would be forced to divest itself of what was Musical.ly, now is TikTok. But I do think that this all speaks to the great amount of concern and oversight over this app that's gone from a tiny little thing to this huge powerhouse.
Most recently, the app received criticism for what it said was a technical glitch, in which post tagged with #BlackLivesMatter and #GeorgeFloyd appeared to have zero views when they actually have over two billion. And in the past, both India and Indonesia have instituted brief bans on the app due to concerns over inappropriate content like violence and pornography.
Lastly, there are ongoing issues regarding children's privacy. Users under 13 are technically not allowed on TikTok, but there's not much really preventing them from signing up. In February 2019, the company paid 5.7 million dollars to the FTC to settle charges that it was illegally collecting children's personal information. This then prompted the U.K. to conduct their own investigation into the matter. While TikTok said it would make changes, in May 2020 a coalition of consumer groups filed a complaint stating that TikTok had not kept its promises.
It's all undoubtedly a lot for Mayer to inherit. But given his background at Disney, some say he may be exactly the right person to address these concerns. So he is someone who has experience dealing with regulation, dealing with oversight, and especially dealing with online security issues, which are certainly front of mind for TikTok as they navigate their relationship with the FTC. If Mayer can secure the trust of U.S. consumers and investors, Byt eDance could be well positioned for an IPO in the next year or two. Beyond that, experts say that TikTok's long-term prospects depend upon its ability to keep users engaged while building out a sustainable monetization strategy.
YouTube could be seen as a model in the way that YouTube shares advertising revenue with its content creators. Mayer's background in streaming services also has both analysts and creators excited about what new forms of content may lie on the horizon. I have been begging TikTok to get into the streaming game. People have speculated that TikTok might get involved in original programming.
To make TikTok sustainable, you're going to have to do long-form content. I don't see a version where you make 60 second videos forever and it stays cool for another two to three years. King also says TikTok's live-streaming feature has room to grow. It's super popular in China, but hasn't yet taken off in the U.S. I think what's next for TikTok is how they figure out how to make money, how they figure out how to create a home for advertisers, and how they make sure that content creators themselves want to stick around and don't want to go jump off to whatever the next cool app is going to be.

May Survey. Did you fill out your response for May?  You can see the full results of previous surveys here Your Listening Recommendations. In a few hours I am starting my drive cross-country. In the next 45 hours, what should I listen to in podcast or video format? Send your episode recommendations to my inbox please Solarize My House. I got plenty of feedback yesterday about my home system, I appreciate that. So here’s the follow up question. I have space for up to 40 panels on the roof, a transfer switch and pre-plumbed for a gas generator. Obviously I want solar but do I also want a generator and battery? Or just a generator? Keep in mind that we plan for up to two weeks of no power post-hurricane and it would be an interesting concept to maximize the gas in the tank with solar/battery/generator if such a complete system that self-managed were on the market. Send your product/design suggestions and I’ll answer any follow up questions here. All Quiet In Energy News. If you haven’t seen it, you should know that mainstream media (i.e. non trade news) have almost eliminated clean energy and solar coverage over the past month. I know that other issues are more prominent but I also worry about layoffs and reassignments of energy writers. For example, Vox has published 1 article with the word solar in it over the past month. It is also important that you get your stories out there, if you can afford it, hire a PR rep. Feel free to ask me for recommendations if you’d like but we need everyone to be out there pitching. Nuclear Boondoggles. In case you missed it, the Georgia nuclear plant will miss deadlines and budgets once again. Regulators are surprisingly still publicly supporting the ratepayers subsidizing poor corporate execution however. Smell Our Most Underestimated Sense
We humans do not appreciate our sense of smell. Compared to other senses like vision and hearing, we tend to ignore the information from our sense of smell with the exception of flowers, food being prepared and, of course, those lucky people who have discovered aromatherapy.
But according to a recent documentary, "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense," our sense of smell affects us much more than we realize. Certainly, we know that it protects us from dangers like fire because we smell the smoke, explosions because we smell natural gas and food poisoning because we smell spoilage. But few realize our sense of smell also lets us "read" other people much like dogs "read" each other by sniffing.
Of course, the olfactory read that humans conduct is not as obvious as that of dogs sniffing but, according to this film, people will oftentimes sniff their hands after shaking hands with someone new, indicating that important information has been gained. The sense of smell also helps newborns bond with their mothers, and "smell dysfunction" can impair such bonding.
Nevertheless, smell is so underappreciated people interviewed in the documentary said they would rather lose it than their "access to technology," such as their smart phones. If you're inclined to agree, after watching this remarkable documentary, you just might change your mind.
Aromatherapy Takes a Clue From Nature
I am a big believer in aromatherapy, which is based on the use of essential oils, also called volatile oils. In addition to inducing relaxation and sleep, and reducing blood pressure1 and stress, aromatherapy may be beneficial for depression,2 anxiety,3 dementia4 and pain relief.5
According to "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense," plants and flowers also use these healing fragrances for themselves! For example, flowers deliberately emit the chemical signals of a female bee so that the male bee will "mate" with the flower and pollinate it. Certain birds, butterflies, bats, moths and even honey possum also pollinate flowers.
The irreplaceable services of these pollinators are seriously threatened by pesticides and chemicals, posing an environmental crisis. It is important to remember that every time you shop for organic food you vote against these harmful chemicals that are creeping into our daily life.
Interestingly, the least pretty flowers are often the most fragrant ones, because they cannot rely on their visual beauty to attract pollinators says the documentary, Moreover, plants can emit odors to warn other plants of impending insect attacks, just as animals warn others about imminent predators.
Sensing Others Through Our Sense of Smell
Many have heard of the phenomenon of menstrual synchrony in which women who live or work together can begin to have their periods at the same time.6 In a T-shirt sniff study, says the documentary, women's testosterone levels changed in response to the scent of another woman, depending on where that woman was in her monthly cycle — though, of course, the women were not consciously aware of this.
Paul Moore, a professor at Bowling Green State University who specializes in chemical ecology and the role chemical signals play in an organism's ecological role, explains the reaction like this:7
"The chemical senses, I call them ninjas — they're hidden. So, they go into our brain, and we're not aware of it, we're not conscious of it, so it makes us respond emotionally, respond physiologically, before we actually think about the response. So, it's very subtle and it's very hidden ...
Testosterone is tied very much to social dominance and in competitiveness and aggression. And up-regulating or down-regulating testosterone through chemical signals could change your competitiveness."
Why would this happen? From an evolutionary standpoint, fertility could be governed by a competition won by dominant females so that less "alpha" females would cease to compete for males at a certain time.
The Hidden Powers of a Handshake
Our sense of smell does not just determine sexual rivals and fertility competition. In one study cited by the documentary, a hidden camera filmed people meeting strangers for the first time and sometimes shaking their hands. Greeters who shook hands smelled their hands afterward twice as often as those who didn't shake hands, presumably accessing the "information" the handshake gleaned.
Shaking hands is likely a human version of dogs sniffing each other — a way of acquiring a lot of social information in one quick impression, says Moore. When dogs sniff each other upon meeting, for example:
"They're sniffing and saying, 'Oh, I played with you last week. You're a good dog to play with,' or 'I smell you from last week. You were a little mean, so I'm not going to play with you.' They're going to pick up their dominant status, social status, their reproductive status, what they've eaten. All that kind of stuff that you and I would share in a conversation with words, they share with chemical signals. Their whole world is sense of smell."
Man's Best Friend Can Save Our Lives
One of the most dramatic facts shared in "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense," is dogs' proven ability to detect cancer in humans from subtle smells in breath, skin and more. Dogs have up to 300 million receptor nerve cells that detect smell (compared to 5 million in humans) and some dogs have been successfully trained to detect human cancers.
In a 2015 study published in the Israel Medical Association Journal,8 two dogs picked out the breast cancer cell cultures that they had been trained to detect 100 percent of the time. These "detective" dogs even picked out cancer specimens they were not trained to detect, but they never picked out control (noncancer) specimens, meaning "false positives," which plague diagnostic methods that are more high-tech than dogs.
The dogs picked out early-stage cancer as well as advanced cancer with amazing accuracy and specificity — a skill that would clearly save lives. In a 2017 study published in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery,9 a trained dog was also able to detect early lung cancer from the exhaled breath of patients with remarkable accuracy. Here is what the researchers wrote:
"After appropriate training, we exposed the dog (a 3-year-old cross-breed between a Labrador retriever and a pitbull) to 390 samples of exhaled gas collected from 113 individuals (85 patients with LC [lung cancer] and 28 controls, which included 11 patients without LC and 17 healthy individuals) for a total of 785 times.
The trained dog recognized LC in exhaled gas with a sensitivity of 0.95, a specificity of 0.98, a positive predictive value of 0.95 and a negative predictive value of 0.98."
Other Cancers Are Being Detected by Dogs
Canine olfactory abilities are also being studied in the screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) which takes the lives of approximately 50,630 Americans per year.10 This is what researchers writing in a 2010 article in BMJ said:11
"Among patients with CRC and controls, the sensitivity of canine scent detection of breath samples compared with conventional diagnosis by colonoscopy was 0.91 and the specificity was 0.99.
The sensitivity of canine scent detection of stool samples was 0.97 and the specificity was 0.99. The accuracy of canine scent detection was high even for early cancer. Canine scent detection was not confounded by current smoking, benign colorectal disease or inflammatory disease."
Such noninvasive and economical methods for early detection of colorectal cancer that avoid colonoscopy are sorely needed. Currently the occult blood test is one of the few affordable tests in the doctors' colorectal cancer arsenal.
Dogs can also detect the specific volatile organic compounds associated with prostate cancer in urine samples with high estimated sensitivity and specificity according to a 2015 study.12
And, in a 2013 study, dogs correctly identified all 42 blood samples of patients with ovarian cancer, achieving an accuracy rate of 100 percent.13 Even more encouraging, the dogs could determine whether cancer cells remained after surgery, which is crucially important since doctors generally cannot determine if residual cancer cells remain.
How Were Dogs' Medical Abilities Discovered?
How did an awareness of such canine abilities and their possible use in medicine develop? Here is how the researchers trace the origins of such dog detections:
"The idea of using a dog's olfactory sense for the early detection of cancer was first raised by Williams and Pembroke and reported in The Lancet in 1989. These authors described the case of a patient who visited the clinic because her dog showed a particular interest in a skin nevus she had. Following its excision, the pathological examination revealed malignant melanoma."
A 2013 case report in BMJ (previously the British Medical Journal) reported a similar phenomenon.14
"Our patient is a 75-year-old man who presented after his pet dog licked persistently at an asymptomatic lesion behind his right ear. Examination revealed a nodular lesion in the postauricular sulcus. Histology confirmed malignant melanoma, which was subsequently excised."
Another Important Function of Our Sense of Smell
Do you like different flavored jelly beans? People tasting them in "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense" quickly discovered that most of the "taste" was from their sense of smell not their sense of taste. When they were asked to pinch their noses, most tasted nothing.
One subject said he tasted "nothing so far." Another said, the jelly bean had "like, a sweetness, but I don't know the flavor." Once the subjects unpinched their noses they could describe the exact flavor of the jelly bean — which was really a smell. The loss of smell had a profound effect on Anna Barnes, featured in the documentary.
"I had a bad hit to the head, so I was kind of recovering from that. And then about a week afterwards, I thought, 'Hold on, something's not quite right here.' It became very clear to me, when I was well enough to go outside, that I'd lost my smell, because back then, the sewerage was open sewerage.
So, I lost my appetite for the first, I would say, four months. I was kind of retraining myself to remember, 'Oh, no, you have to eat' ...
When I lost my taste, fruit tasted for me, terrible. It's just gross. Fruit just tastes really slimy. It's all about texture ... I also had some early, you know, mix-ups, of accidentally drinking vodka, thinking it was water. And, you know, all the kind of stereotypical things that I guess people worry about."
It is clear that from "reading" other people to determining dangers to our enjoyment of food, our sense of smell is crucial — and certainly more important than our access to technology if we were asked to choose. Just as eye-opening is the ability of man's best friends to use their olfactory natural abilities to detect cancers as accurately as the most high-tech machines.
