pop is political in the sense that i dont think that people understand that by supporting an artist that might align with certain values, they are indirectly supporting their own oppression. media like this doesnt exist in its own hyper compartmentalized space, away from any social instances/occurences. it very much acts as it's own entity that is a reinforcer of norms, and you as a consumer have all the power. when you buy tickets, merch, vinyls, of an artist that you haven't heavily looked into that are propagating values that don't align with what you actually believe in, its a endless self sustaining sickness.
and i know so many people are gonna say "oh but its not that deep!! relax, its just music!!" except that art is even political when its not political bc that in of itself is a political choice. most people who r famous r like that because if they stood for real values, then they would be seen as too "standoffish" or hardheaded to appease masses, who would rather stay consuming whats least stimulating, and therefore the least disturbing. choosing not to engage in art as a social agent in its highest form is a collective decision we each choose to make, and in doing so we promote our own suffering.
its sad too bc what is supposed to be a source of healing and a transmutation of the innermost self is instead used as a mind numbing distraction . pop can be just as emotionally charged and smart as old school hip hop or punk, smh !!
“I am forever denouncing this therapeutic obsession that governs our modern society, scared of living and haunted by death. We must protect ourselves from everything, heal from everything. Nowadays, food, music, painting, hiking… everything is repurposed as a method for healing, for keeping fit, for keeping healthy, when these activities are first and foremost opportunities for pleasure, desire, gratitude, knowledge, wonderment, and bonding with others. Our entire culture, as well as politics, imposes on all citizens this endless and nagging preoccupation with mental and physical health.”

Lauryn and I feel like a couple of snails in the July heat as we walk the five minutes from our soon-to-be-old apartment over to Darrien’s place. He opens the front door covered head to toe in skate merch: a black Palace tee with pink font, and HUF Worldwide flip-flops with pink sweatpants, and gives us both a big hug. We feel instantly welcomed—a quality that makes this speaker geek from Virginia a natural leader in Denver’s underground. At Dem Deya Sound System gatherings, attendees often approach him to chat while he’s taking breaks from fine-tuning the party, and he’s proud to hold space for them. In keeping with the sound system tradition he operates from, community doesn’t merely come first, it’s the message.
Tumblr media
"Reggae is just so hard, depending on what area you're doing it at. Like, if you're playing towards a Caribbean crowd, or playing towards a bunch of Roots peoples, Rastas, or just playing for people who like the word ‘dub,’ which is a completely different world almost...”
Darrien guides us to his studio apartment couch and apologizes for the temperature, then steps away to grab some cans of lemon sparkling water. I notice the various Lego car builds displayed on his desk next to a few pieces of MIDI gear—looks like he doesn’t just build speakers. After taking a few sips to cool down and chatting about the futuristic car on his TV (he's been playing Final Fantasy XV), we jump into the interview. He wants to talk about genre variety; for him, it’s a prerequisite for getting people tuned in to what he’s actually doing out here. He’s a natural storyteller and shrewd conversationalist, speaking candidly about the mission while maintaining a low key demeanor and cracking plenty of jokes. Lauryn and I quickly start to feel like a couple of buddies just kicking back and catching up.
Darrien is grateful for Denver’s “built-in” electronic music scene, and feels strongly about platforming original sound system styles. But he’s also blazing his own trail—pun intended! Traditionally, sound systems don’t showcase the non-reggae styles that Dem Deya does, at least not with such regularity. But Darrien understands that dubstep, drum n’ bass, jungle, hip-hop, and even garage aren’t just logical entry points for many of Denver's scenesters—they’re a solid foundation for a sound system community. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s got outstanding taste in these styles. “There's already a community here,” he says, “and we got to throw some of these [non-dub/non-reggae] events to get some of these people to understand that this is the role of the sound system.” This part of the mission is front-of-mind for Dem Deya. It’s been simmering on their proverbial cooktop for a time, and putting in the work to get people there has been an easy choice. But the work itself is not easy—it’s almost like threading a needle. On one side, the inherent pressure of genre ‘purity’ from the cultural giants whose shoulders they stand on. And on the other, a whitewashed bass music scene generally not prone to dub and reggae unless it’s worked into 140 BPM dubstep. Darrien doesn’t harp on cultural appropriation during our interview—his work isn’t concerned with drawing lines in the sand, in fact, just the opposite. But the context in which he’s operating is important to understanding the immensity of what he’s doing in Colorado. Darrien is an educator through and through, passionate about increasing awareness of true sound system culture and the roles it can play in society. He talks at length about sound system’s inherently political nature, referencing systems in Jamaica being stolen or destroyed by the government, and Rastafarians being tortured and killed by police on Bad Friday. The message of sound system, at its core, is “unity, community, peace, love, respect, and self-liberation," says Darrien. He’s dedicated his life to spreading this message in the states, where just a handful of traditional sound systems operate.
Tumblr media
Darrien (left) with his grandfather and little brother, circa 1999
Before Darrien became entwined with sound system, family and community sparked his love for music. When he was just seven or eight years old, his dad let him pick out some CDs from a massive home collection. He opted for “Toxicity” by System of a Down, and “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” by Wu-Tang Clan. “[My dad] was like, ‘Yo, pick anything you want, I think you’re old enough. Here’s a Walkman CD player. This is how it works. Don't scratch it, don't drop it.’ That's when I kind of started seeing the value of it all, but, over time, y’know?” He thoughtfully observes how songs and albums used to carry so much power, and points out that in order to really make an impact on people these days, you have to throw an entire event.
As a teen, Darrien was particularly inspired by the music he heard in skate videos. His takeaway as a youngster was that it “was easy to understand,” because it “all came from an area of self-expression,” whether the style was heavy metal, hip-hop, country, or even folk. In high school, one of his skateboarding buddies turned him on to “FabricLive.37” by Caspa & Rusko. Along with artists like Pretty Lights and an introductory festival experience at Identity, this formed the “surface level” of his foray into electronic music. But joining the Air Force at age 18 to serve as an airplane technician was what truly pulled him in deep, into contact with the UK’s diverse electronic music scene.
“I didn't want my parents to pay for my college; I wanted to see some new shit. [So I joined the Air Force] and I was like, send me wherever. So they obviously sent me to the rave capital of the world.” [laughs]
Darrien was keen to check out London’s musical underground. First, through free parties in the midlands, then Outlook festival, and eventually, weekly visits to raves and sound system events in the city.
“Next thing you know, three years passed by and me and Ky [co-founder Kyler Coates] were going to parties every week, just buying tickets left and right. … We would drive an hour to our friend Rosa’s house in London who we met at this festival Outlook. Shout out Rosa, man. Her spot would just be poppin’ every single weekend. So it was never a question of 'if', we just had to hit her up and let her know, and then we would have our own space to sleep. Afterwards, we could just drive an hour back to town.”
This kind of exposure to underground music culture instilled excitement in the pair, and their eventual involvement with local sound system culture inspired a deep sense of purpose. They proceeded to buy a short speaker stack from a high schooler in town who built custom boxes, and planned a move back to the states to spread that purpose. Initially, choosing Denver as a home base was for little reason other than weed’s legality there.
“I don't really have to explain much about the reasons I would leave the military, but it was clearly not the fucking vibe, y’know? So we decided, alright, well, let’s go here [to Denver]. See what we can do [with our own] sound system, and yeah, it's worked out, it's become like nothing I could ever really imagine. This was something where we were just trying to dedicate ourselves to this message."
And dedicate themselves, they have. Dem Deya have developed a strong presence in Denver’s sprawling music scene in just a couple of years, going on to fly out staple reggae & dub artists while platforming the local DJ community, getting the sound system to a place where, in Darrien’s words, “all two thousand of the Instagram followers are trying to buy tickets to go see Joe Schmo play, because they just know the stack is coming out, and they know they’re accepted there.” But this run hasn’t been without its challenges. Darrien isn’t shy about the pushback they’ve received from certain parts of the scene in Denver. Unfortunately, as is the case in many other cities, clubs and greedy promoters have been a particular source of frustration. He pulls no punches discussing industry commodification and monopolization, illustrating how sound system has a unique ability to disrupt that chain.
“Man, it really gets goofy sometimes. I remember the first event when we brought our sound system here. At this point, it’s a half stack. We've got a bunch of dub records, and we’re literally just looking for a space to bring it in and press play on it. And this dude was trying to charge us $600. I'm like, bro, what is.....what do you mean? And this person is an industry person and they’re like ‘Oh, I know about dub and reggae sound.’ They see the potential of charging at the door, you know, such and such. We're like cowboys with speakers, to where it does expose a lot of the fluff. What does he want $600 for? And then, it's like, y’know, tell him to go fuck himself!”
We erupt in laughter for the hundredth time that day. If Darrien hadn’t gotten into curating events and building speaker boxes, he would have made a splash in stand-up. He goes on:
“People always talkin’ ‘bout, ‘oh, this is for the community, I'm throwing this event for the community, but I'm charging $40 at 3am.’ It's like, uhhhh....that's not community! … If you want to rent some speakers and throw an event to make 30% on the dollar, then you can go ahead and do that. There's no foul play in that. … Just don’t call yourself an underground entity. ... With sound system, there's accountability. That's the best way to put it. There's accountability, and a responsibility behind it. It’s a gift just to be able to do this.”
Tumblr media
‘Exposing the fluff’ hits the nail on the head, but Darrien doesn’t stop there. He talks about clubs in Denver turning local promoters’ communities into a product, then turning around and buying artist bookings right out from under them. He references the recent Deadbeats controversy, where the label marketed an anonymous 'underground' artist using messaging about the 'roots of the culture,' only for it to come out later that the artist was a side-project of a mainstream bass music producer. Darrien is “not bound by the music industry to be quiet about” or “turn a blind eye” to the “funny business” he perceives in how it operates and sustains itself. But absolutely none of his opinions come off as moaning or complaining. They’re principled, passionate accounts of his lived experience as a promoter, which serve to counterpoint and help define the role of the sound system to an outsider. When it comes right down to it, the message and the method are what matter most to him and Dem Deya.
“We know what we gotta do. We know what's important to us. So we just gotta do that."
The self-assurance is palpable. And you can feel it when the crew conjures a vibe at an event, keeping their focus on the sound and attendees. Their events transform into more relaxed, community-oriented experiences, where being there becomes more important than being seen. The deejay is still viewed as a guide, artist, and essential piece of the puzzle, but they’re part of the experience, rather than being the experience itself. The attention economy is replaced by groups of people, coming together to form a whole and enjoy good music on good speakers. This space is easy to exist in: intensely creative and expressive, but still low key and uniquely intent on togetherness. Being sober at their Dubamine event felt like second nature to me, rather than some sort of quest, despite the party atmosphere and weed smoke lingering in the air. Speaker stack in the back, people at the front, and Subjet spinning vinyl, gracefully moving from dub tunes into dubstep over time to an enthusiastic crowd.
Dem Deya parties are refreshing, but Darrien isn’t one to toot his own horn about that. He’s humble through and through, refusing to take full credit for events, and when he does perform at something he’s helped curate, he prefers to play early so he can “put the homies on.” This collaborative spirit is embodied in the name of the sound system (often mispronounced ‘dem daiya’ – no vegan cheese here, just tunes!), which he stumbled upon during an acid trip with co-founder Kyler:
“We're like, man, what the fuck we gon’ call this thing, and so, like any couple homies looking for creative inspiration would do, we dropped some acid.......and come up with the name in the first ten minutes! [laughs] But the name Dem Deya is just a play on words: Dem Deya, like, dem over deya, ‘them over there.’ If you’re from the culture in which all of this is talking about, it's easy, it's not even a name. It's almost stupid, kind of silly. But then when you look at it on paper and you're not from that at all, and you say the name Dem Deya, it just sounds like a thing. … I can’t do this by myself—it’s just no longer ‘dem.’ Then it’s just him deya, right? And that’s fucking wack.” His solo deejay gigs, he explains, in addition to the ‘too many styles’ events, are important to him, but ultimately, secondary—done in order to spread awareness about the sound system’s primary offering. “No one's gonna really listen to Darrien Williamson. But people will listen to Scarien, the DJ. … Getting it to that level [where people will listen to you] takes that sort of celebrity-ism, that status, y’know? Otherwise, people don't want to hear what we got to say—they wanna hear Rick Ross say it!” Perhaps this wasn’t clear to him when he moved to Denver, but through trial-and-error, he’s come to understand how to effectively spread this message and get people to show up to events focused on reggae, dub, and dancehall. In fact, Dem Deya recently collaborated to bring international dub heavyweights O.B.F. Sound System and Iration Steppas to the Aztlan Theater in Denver.

Listening to Darrien talk about this milestone event is just about the cutest thing ever. His old soul is completely wrapped up in the joy and validation that came from bringing together all the different people from his journey in music, for an event of this scale, and having it be received so well in the Mile High City. This was a full circle, leveling up moment for him and the crew. Since that show back in March, they’ve sustained the momentum, increasing the resonance of Caribbean and UK sound system culture for people in the West through productions, bookings, and collabs.
“This is what we've been working towards, being able to create the space for people to listen when the music speaks. … Doing all this music stuff within a genuine light and having a peace of mind to do it is one of the biggest..it's the most important thing. Because independence within the music industry is important, independence in your own life is important. I feel like sound system reflects and touches on all these things and that's why I've dedicated my..I guess, life to it, at this point. Because it just does so much for people.”
It’s enough to demonstrate this level of wisdom at such a young age, but to have such dedication to this calling, and to so patiently usher people from overlapping scenes into the rich culture of sound system makes Darrien one of a kind. His ethos of serving the sound system—not the self—is his north star, but it doesn’t just guide his way. It shines a light that allows others to see what he sees in the music, and the people that congregate around it: a great power for good that comes with a great responsibility. Shell Toes And Hoop Earrings: Eight Hip-Hop Fashion Items That Changed What We Wear
New York exhibition traces style evolution: ‘These are intergenerational ideas of what it meant to be stylish’.
From Professor X’s hat to Spike Lee merch, Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous, a new exhibition at New York’s Museum at FIT, traces the history of hip-hop style across 50 years. Elizabeth Way and Elena Romero, the event’s curators, talk through the importance of eight items – including one from Romero’s own archive – that changed fashion.
Romero contributed her own name belt to the exhibition – an example of a trend for wearing your name on accessories in the early 80s. “There were these small mom-and-pop stores throughout the different boroughs,” she says. “You would tell them how many letters, with either your name, your horoscope, your crew, and then have them customised.”
Hoop earrings are synonymous with hip-hop style – worn by everyone from Salt-N-Pepa to Lil Kim and Cardi B. Way says this is another item with roots in wider Black culture. “We see a lot of figures like Betty Shabazz, Angela Davis, wearing hoops, and we see that continue with women in hip-hop.”
“A lot of it is paying homage to mothers, our aunties, the baby boomers of the civil rights movement,” adds Romero.
Images taken by the photographer Jamel Shabazz @jamelshabazz in the early 80s are featured in the exhibition. Documenting young people in the hip-hop scene in Brooklyn, the images showcase the large-lensed Cazal glasses now so associated with this era. Romero says they were a status symbol and could be seen as an early example of geek chic. “Glasses have not always had the best responses from young kids,” she remembers. “But now, all of a sudden, the very thing that people kind of hated was chic and popular.” They were the finishing touch on a kind of uniform: “You’d wear them with the bucket hat, the shearling, the Shell Toes or Converse.”
Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip Hop Style is at the Museum at FIT in New York from 8 February to 23 April -(source: the guardian)

I was thinking that pt3 jotaro, rohan, and narancia headcanons with their s/o who's an idol. There's also one scenario I would like where s/o is waiting for whoever it is and some creepy fan goes up to them and ya know, invades their privacy, how would they react? Sorry if that's too much 🥺
Ohhhh niceeee! Let’s see how this goes ~!
~~~~
KUJO JOTARO
Tumblr media
Even if the music you do isn’t his cup of tea, he still supports you very much, in his own way
He buys all your CDs and cassettes, every bit of merch, even if it’s figurines, Tshirts, stickers, pins
And will, without a doubt, act as your personal bodyguard
He’s genuinely shocked if anyone actually has the guts to get anywhere near you when he’s around ( unless it’s a meet & greet, a signing or something )
So you can imagine the face he made when he was escorting you out of a venue after a concert, while you were still glowing and wearing your cutesy and flashy idol outfit, and this...This...Guy...Waltzes up to you
With a stupidly lecherous grin on his stupid face
And asks for an autograph on his merch Tshirt
You smiled politely, as per your Idol persona facade that you had to put up to keep up your positive image, and having to sign Tshirts was nothing out of the ordinary for you, so you didn’t mind it
But as soon as you stepped closer to him, he sneaked his arm around your waist and pulled you into his arms
And he started slurring a shit ton of perverted ‘love’ confessions
But boy of boy, he had no idea that your bodyguard was also your boyfriend
He’s literally dead
Jotaro will snatch his wrist from you, snap it broken and push him away
Then he picks you up bridal style, walking away, while he lets Star Platinum to Ora the shit out of this idiot
He would have liked to stay and watch, but he didn’t want you to witness such violence, even if you’re a Stand user and had to fight before
That night, he will be a bit quieter than usual for most of the time, until he gets to hold you to sleep
And when he thinks you’re finally asleep ( even if you aren’t ) he will mutter a very sweet ‘I love you’
-----
KISHIBE ROHAN
Tumblr media
He’s a artist, okay??
Rohan = Art = Aesthetics
He will design all your clothes, one outfit for each song, all your special effects, all your stage backgrounds
Will also help you with songs if you ask him to, or will give you ideas if he sees you’re in an artistic blockage
Will propose to travel with you as your manager, but also, will plan trips in various places he deems beautiful, hoping you’ll feel inspired
Also, a ton of photoshoots
You’re a Goddess, alright??
Divine
And he will make sure EVERYONE sees that
Not to mention, he does all your album art and posters - He would get genuinely offended if he wasn’t the one to do them, actually
And a LOT of fanart
But he also does fanart with the two of you together, or with your Stands, either as they are, or dressed in the two of you’s artsy clothes
He actually takes great pride when people buy your merch, because it’s designed by him, so while they appreciate you, he’s also feeling appreciated from the shadows
It’s not the fame, but the art loving that matters to him!
However, one day when you and your girl group idol friends were at a long table, signing things for your fans, while he stood in the chair next to you, scribbling around in his notebook and occasionally gossiping with you
Some guy leaned over the table
Dangerously low
And close to your face
And just...Grinned
It was super creepy, and despite the perfect facade you always pulled, you could only lean further back on your chair and give an awkward half-smile, greeting him and very uncomfortably writing on the disk he bought
But he then asked for a kiss, and that was the last drop for Rohan
Before you knew it, the little white man that his Stand was punched this creep and wrote “Will always shout his most embarrassing secrets out loud”
And that happened
And it was so bad that the guy started sobbing and ran out of there
It took all self-control both you and Rohan had not to laugh hysterically
But by the time you finished the signing session, he took you to a nice cafe outside and you could finally freely gossip and mock all the idiots that cross your path
ESPECIALLY that guy
-----
GHIRGA NARANCIA
Tumblr media
He’s literally your biggest and most vocal fan!!!
Will fanboy about you ALL the time, so much that he kinda annoys the Bucci gang
But they’re also happy for him ‘cause he got to meet the love of his life and he is so excitable and happy with you
So they will also support both you and him
Will be there, in the front row, with huge signs that say “Y/N WE LOVE YOU”
Will constantly yell ALL the lyrics to ALL your songs, and when you’re talking to the crowd, he’ll whistle and cheer so loud
It makes you grin so much and he loves it
Also, instead of the hip hop things he used to listen when on going on missions with the gang, he will listen, hum or sing your songs
So much that every member has at least one favourite line of your songs and will unfortunately have a song stuck in their head
After the concert, you had a meet & greet backstage with a few fans, but of course, Narancia was there and ran to hug you and spin you around, congratulating you on another perfect concert while kissing you all over your face
Apparently, despite the fact that you were open about your relationship with the boy since the beginning of your career, some of your fans weren’t aware of it  - Or maybe they didn’t want to acknowledge its existence
So as soon as Narancia let go of you, so you could catch your breath, you got picked up by someone else, which made you squeak in shock and surprise
This action left everyone speechless - Literally jaw dropped
And Narancia got so pissed off at this fan’s rudeness that he started throwing hands with him
Well, not literally, he respected you too much for that
But he literally picked the boy up by the scruff of his blouse and threw him away from you, threatening him to never get anywhere close to you ever again
If you don’t respect Y/N’s personal space, you don’t respect her music either, so you don’t deserve to be anywhere near her!
So he got security to throw him away from here
All while he commanded Aerosmith to chase him down and shoot the hell outta him, while he held you in his arms and comforted you
Not to mention, he’ll get info on him with the help of Buccellati’s gang and will make his life a living hell
All while giving you only sunshine, rainbows and unicorns, because you deserve all the best and nobody will EVER bother you again <3
After the meal — steak and pasta, catered by the Lexus club — the couple enjoyed a private screening of Titanic. (stone face towards me) and I’m thinking to myself like damn…. she’s actually really sweet though, I can tell lol… so She says let’s play a prank on Justin…. and I agreed (why not right?) let’s take a pic and then send the guys the pic and under it say ‘guess who’s getting a grill?'”
“I didn’t say it was a joke or anything… a few hours later, I get a text from Justin saying ‘call me’ and I’m like…. damn, he’s gonna be mad or tell me to take it down….”
“He says ‘cmon bro. is she really getting a grill? (I’ve talked to him enough on the phone to know his voice and different sounds, from regular to really happy) and he was definitely concerned like ‘please say it’s a joke’…. so I’m thinking to myself, like damn, I know in the last 3 hours he’s had to have talked to his girl and he had to ask her…. I can’t believe she’s really stringing this little prank along for so long…. she’s really cool for playing the joke for real! haha”
Dusted Mid-Year Round-Up: Part 2, Dr. Pete Larson to  Young Slo-Be
Tumblr media
James Brandon Lewis
The mid-year exchange continues with the second half of the alphabet and another round of Dusted writers reviewing other people’s favorite records.  Today’s selection runs the gamut from Afro-beat to hip hop to experimental music and includes some of this year’s best jazz records.  Check out part one if you missed it yesterday.
Dr. Pete Larson and His Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band — Damballah (Dagoretti Records)
Damballah by Dr. Pete Larson and his Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band
Who Picked it? Mason Jones
Did we review it? No, but Jennifer Kelly said about his previous record, “It’s authentic not to some musicological conception of what nyatiti music should sound like, but to the instincts and proclivities of the musicians involved.”
Bryon Hayes’ take:
Judging from Jenny’s review, Dr. Pete Larson hasn’t really changed his modus operandi much since last year’s self-titled release. Well, he has appeared to have dropped vocalist Kat Steih and drummer Tom Hohman, who aren’t credited with an appearance on Damballah. Sonically, this album feels more polished than its predecessor. There’s a richness that was lacking before, a sense of clarity that Larson seems to have added here. He still hypnotizes with his nyatiti but doesn’t lose himself behind the other players. That sense of mesmerizing repetition of short passages on the resonant lute-like instrument is what sets the music of the Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band apart from other rock groups who play in the psychedelic vein. It’s easy to get lost in the intricate plucking patterns as the guitars and synths swirl about. The rhythms bounce cleverly against those created by the percussion, anchoring the songs to solid ground. Balancing the airy and the earthy, Dr. Peter Larson and His Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band create a cosmic commotion perfect for contemplation.
 James Brandon Lewis / Red Lily Quintet — Jesup Wagon (TAO Forms)
Jesup Wagon by James Brandon Lewis / Red Lily Quintet
Who recommended it? Derek Taylor
Did we review it? Yes, Derek said, “’Fallen Flowers’ and ‘Seer’ contain sections of almost telepathic convergence, the former and the closing ‘Chemurgy’ culminating in Lewis’ spoken words inculcating the import of his subject.”
Tim Clarke’s take:
Tenor saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis demonstrates his control of the instrument in the opening moments of Jesup Wagon’s title track. Before his Red Lily Quintet bandmates join the fray, he alternates between hushed ululations and full-blooded honks, inviting the listener to lean in conspiratorially. Once the rest of the band fire up, cornet player Kirk Knuffke, bassist William Parker, cellist Chris Hoffman and drummer Chad Taylor lock into a loose, muscular shuffle. Their collective chemistry is immediately evident, and each player has the opportunity to shine across this diverse set’s 50-minute runtime. I’m particularly drawn to the rapid-fire rhythmic runs on “Lowlands of Sorrow,” the gorgeous cello on “Arachis,” and the spacious, mbira-laced “Seer.” There’s something about the mournful horn melody of the final piece, “Chemurgy,” that sends me back to first hearing Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” — and, just like that, I’m excited about the prospect of exploring jazz again, for the first time in a long time. Great pick, Derek.
 Roscoe Mitchell & Mike Reed — The Ritual And The Dance (Astral Spirits)
the Ritual and the Dance by Roscoe Mitchell & Mike Reed
Who recommended it? Derek Taylor
Did we review it? Yes, Derek wrote, “Roscoe Mitchell remains an improvisational force to be reckoned with.”
Andrew Forell’s take:
For 17-plus minutes, Roscoe Mitchell solos on his soprano with barely a pause, the rush of notes powered by circular breathing, as drummer Mike Reed’s controlled clatter counterpoints Mitchell’s exploration of his instrument’s range and tonal qualities in what sounds like a summation of his long career at the outer edge of jazz. It‘s an extraordinary beginning to this performance, recorded live in 2015. On first listen it sounds chaotic, but shapes emerge in Mitchell’s sound, and Reed’s combination of density and silence complements, punctuates and supports in equal measure. After an incisive solo workout from Reed combining clanging metal and rolling toms, Mitchell swaps to tenor and the pace changes. Longer, slower notes, a rougher, reed heavy tone and a lighter touch from Reed. Having not closely followed Mitchell’s work since his days in The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, this performance was a revelation and will have me searching back through his catalog.
The Notwist — Vertigo Days (Morr Music)
Vertigo Days by The Notwist
Who recommended it? Tim Clarke
Did we review it?  Yes, Tim said, “The Notwist really know how to structure a front-to-back listening experience, and this is emphatically a work of art best appreciated as a whole.”
Arthur Krumins’ take:
In his review of Vertigo Days, Tim Clarke highlights the “multiple layers of drifting, shifting instrumentation.” It is an album that seems unbound by adherence to a set instrument lineup, and it moves quickly between moods both frenetic and contemplative. However, due to a careful mixing and an unforced approach to genre expectations, it is a surprising and varied listen that bears repeated scrutiny. The touchstones of the sound are at times the motorik beat of krautrock, at others the ethereal indie pop of their melodies and the quality of their singing. It feels like the perfect quirky coffee shop album, just out there enough to create a vibe, but tactful enough to take you along for the ride.
  Dorothea Paas — Anything Can’t Happen (Telephone Explosion)
Anything Can't Happen by Dorothea Paas
Who picked it? Arthur Krumins.
Did we review it? No.
Eric McDowell’s take:
In one sense, it’s fair to say that Dorothea Paas’s debut album opens with a false start: A single note sounded and then retreated from, fingers sliding up and down the fretboard with the diffidence of a throat clearing. Yet what gesture could more perfectly introduce an album so marked by uncertainty, vulnerability, and naked self-assessment?
If Anything Can’t Happen is an open wound, it’s a wound Paas willingly opens: “I’m not lonely now / Doing all the things I want to and working on my mind / Sorting through old thoughts.” That doesn’t make the pain any less real — though it does make it more complex. “It’s so hard to trust again / When you can’t even trust yourself,” Paas sings on the utterly compelling title track, her gaze aiming both inward and outward. Elsewhere she admits: “I long for a body closer to mine / But I don’t want to seek, I just want to find.” Instrumentally, Paas and her bandmates manage to temper an inclination toward static brooding with propulsive forward motion, a balance that suits the difficult truth — or better yet, difficult truce — the album arrives at in the climactic “Frozen Window”: “How can I open to love again, like a plant searches for light through a frozen window? / Can I be loved, or is it all about control? / I will never know until I start again.” In the spirit of starting again, Anything Can’t Happen ends with a doubling down on the opening prelude, reprising and extending it — no false start to be found.
 Dominic Pifarely Quartet — Nocturnes (Clean Feed)
Nocturnes by Dominique Pifarély Quartet
Who recommended it? Jason Bivins
Did we review it? No
Derek Taylor’s take:
Pifarely and I actually go way back in my listening life, specifically to Acoustic Quartet, an album the French violinist made for ECM as a co-leader with countryman clarinetist Louis Sclavis in 1994. Thirty-something at the time, his vehicle for that venture was an improvising chamber ensemble merging classical instrumentation and extended techniques with jazz and folk derived influences. The results, playful and often exhilaratingly acrobatic, benefited greatly from austere ECM house acoustics. Nearly three decades distant, Nocturnes is a different creature, delicate and darker hued in plumage and less enamored of melody, harmony and rhythm, at least along conventional measures. Drones and other textures are regular elements of the interplay between the leader’s strings, the piano of Antonin Rayon and the sparse braiding and shadings of bassist Bruno Chevillon and drummer Francois Merville. Duos also determine direction, particular on the series of titular miniatures that are as much about space as they are centered in sound. It’s delightful to get reacquainted after so much time apart.
The Reds Pinks & Purples — Uncommon Weather (Slumberland/Tough Love)
Uncommon Weather by The Reds, Pinks & Purples
Who picked it? Jennifer Kelly
Did we review it? Yes, Jennifer said, “Uncommon Weather is undoubtedly the best of the Reds, Pinks & Purples discs so far, an album that is damned near perfect without seeming to try very hard.”
Bill Meyer’s take:
Sometimes a record hits you where you live. Glenn Donaldson’s too polite to do you any harm, but he not only knows where you live, he knows your twin homes away from home, the record store and the club where you measure your night by how many bands’ sets separate you from last call. He knows the gushing merch-table mooches and the old crushes that casually bring the regulars down, and he also knows how to make records just like the ones that these folks have been listening to since they started making dubious choices. Uncommon Weather sounds like a deeply skilled recreation of early, less chops-heavy Bats, and if that description makes sense to you, so will this record.
 claire rousay — A Softer Focus (American Dreams Records)
a softer focus by Claire Rousay
Who picked it? Bryon Hayes
Did we review it? Yes, Bryon Hayes wrote, “These field recordings of the mundane, when coupled with the radiance of the musical elements, are magical.”
Ian Mathers’ take:
In a weird way (because they are very different works from very different artists), A Softer Focus reminds me a bit of Robert Ashley’s Private Parts (The Album). Both feel like the products of deep focus and concentration but wear their rigor loosely, and both feel like beautifully futile attempts to capture or convey the rich messiness of human experience. But although there is a musicality to Private Parts, Ashley is almost obsessed by language and language acts, and even though the human voice is more present than ever in rousay’s work (not just sampled or field recorded, but outright albeit technologically smeared singing on a few tracks) it feels like it reaches to a place in that experience beyond words. The first few times I played it I had moments where I was no longer sure exactly what part of what I was hearing were coming from my speakers versus from outside my apartment, and as beautiful as the more conventional ambient/drone aspects of A Softer Focus are (including the cello and violin heard throughout), it’s that kind of intoxicating disorientation, of almost feeling like I’m experiencing someone else’s memory, that’s going to stay with me the longest.
 M. Sage — The Wind Of Things (Geographic North)
The Wind of Things by M. Sage
Who recommended it? Bryon Hayes
Did we review it? No
Bill Meyer’s take:
Matthew Sage’s hybrid music gets labeled as ambient by default. Sure, it’s gentle enough to be ignorable, but Sage’s combination of ruminative acoustic playing (mostly piano and guitar, with occasional seasoning from reeds, violin, banjo, and percussion) and memory-laden field recordings feels so personal that it’s hard to believe he’d really be satisfied with anyone treating this stuff as background music. But that combination of the placid and the personal may also be The Wind of Things’ undoing since it’s a bit too airy and undemonstrative to make an impression.
 Skee Mask — Pool (Ilian Tape)
ITLP09 Skee Mask - Pool by Skee Mask
Who picked it? Patrick Masterson
Did we review it? No
Robert Ham’s take:
Pool is an appropriate title for the new album by Munich electronic artist Bryan Müller. The record is huge and deep, with its 18 tracks clocking in at around 103 minutes. And Müller has pointedly only released the digital version of Pool through Bandcamp, adding it a little hurdle to fans who just want to pick and choose from its wares for their playlists. Dipping one’s toes in is an option, but the only way to truly appreciate the full effect is to dive on in.
Though Müller filled Pool up with around five years’ worth of material, the album plays like the result of great deliberation. It flows with the thoughtfulness and intention of an adventurous DJ set, with furious breakbeat explosions like “Breathing Method” making way for the languorous ambient track “Ozone” and the unbound “Rio Dub.” Then, without warning, the drum ‘n’ bass breaks kick in for a while.
The full album delights in those quick shifts into new genres or wild seemingly disparate sonic connections happening within the span of a single song. But again, these decisions don’t sound like they were made carelessly. Müller took some time with this one to get the track list just right. But if there is one thread that runs along the entirety of Pool, it is the air of joy that cuts through even its downcast moments. The splashing playfulness is refreshing and inviting.
 Speaker Music — Soul-Making Theodicy (Planet Mu)
Soul-Making Theodicy by Speaker Music
Who picked it? Mason Jones
Did we review it? No
Robert Ham’s take:
The process by which DeForrest Brown Jr., the artist known as Speaker Music, created his latest EP sounds almost as exciting as the finished music. If I understand it correctly — and I’m not entirely sure that I do — he created rhythm tracks using haptic synths, a Push sequencer, and a MIDI keyboard, that he sent through Ableton and performed essentially a live set of abstract beats informed by free jazz, trap and marching band. Or as Brown calls them “stereophonic paintings.”
Whatever term you care to apply to these tracks and however they were made, the experience of listening to them is a dizzying one. A cosmic high that takes over the synapses and vibrates them until your vision becomes blurry and your word starts to smear together like fog on a windshield. Listening to this EP on headphones makes the experience more vertiginous if, like I did, you try to unearth the details and sounds buried within the centerpiece track “Rhythmatic Music For Speakers,” a 33-minute symphony of footwork stuttering and polyrhythms. Is that the sound of an audience responding to this sensory overload that I hear underneath it all? Or is that wishful imaginings coming from a mind hungry for the live music experience?
 The Telescopes — Songs of Love And Revolution (Tapete)
Songs Of Love And Revolution by the telescopes
Who recommended it? Robert Ham
Did we review it? No.
Andrew Forell’s take:
Songs Of Love And Revolution glides along on murky subterranean rhythms that evoke Mo Tucker’s heartbeat toms backed with thick bowel-shaking bass lines. Somewhere in the murk Stephen Lawrie’s murmured vocals barely surface as he wrings squalls of noise from his guitar to create a dissonant turmoil to contrast the familiarity of what lies beneath. The effect is at once hypnotic and joltingly thrilling, similar to hearing Jesus And Mary Chain for the first time but played a at pace closer to Bedhead. A kind of slowcore shoegaze, its mystery enhanced by what seems deliberately monochrome production that forces and rewards close attention. When they really let go on “We See Magic And We Are Neutral, Unnecessary” it hits like The Birthday Party wrestling The Stooges. So yeah, pretty damn good.
 Leon Vynehall — Rare, Forever (Ninja Tune)
Rare, Forever by LEON VYNEHALL
Who recommended it? Patrick Masterson
Did we review it? No.
Jason Bivins’ take:
I was amused to see Leon Vynehall’s album tucked into the expansive “Unknown genre” non-category. This is, as is often the case with these mid-year exchanges, a bit far afield from the kind of music I usually spin. Much of it is, I suppose, rooted in house music. Throughout these tracks, there are indeed some slinky beats that’ll get you nodding your head while prepping the dinner or while studying in earnest. There’s plenty to appreciate on the level of grooves and patterns, but he closer you listen, the more subversive, sneaky details you notice. The opening “Ecce! Ego!” isn’t quite as brash as the title would suggest, featuring some playfully morphed voices, old school synth patches and snatches of instrumentalism. But after just a couple minutes, vast cosmic sounds start careening around your brainpan while a metal bar drops somewhere in the audial space. Did that just happen? you wonder as the groove continues. Moments of curiosity and even discomfort are plopped down, sometimes as transitions (like the closing vocal announcement on “In>Pin” — “like a moth” — that introduces the echo-canyon of “Mothra”) but usually as head-scrambling curveballs. Startled voices or flutes or subterranean sax bubble up from beneath deep house thrum, then are gone in ways that are arresting and deceptive. I still don’t know what to make of the lounge-y closing to “Snakeskin – Has-Been” or the unexpected drone monolith of “Farewell! Magnus Gabbro.” In its way, Vynehall’s music is almost like what you’d get if Graham Lambkin or Jason Lescalleet made a house record. Pretty rich stuff.
 Michael Winter — single track (Another Timbre)
single track by Michael Winter
Who recommended it? Eric McDowell
Did we review it? Not yet!
Mason Jones’ take:
Over its 45 minutes, Michael Winter’s 2015 composition slowly accelerates and accumulates, starting from an isolated violin playing slightly arrhythmic, single fast strokes. The playing, centered around a single root note, seems almost random, but flashes of melodic clusters make it clear they're not. After nine minutes other players have joined in and there's a developing drone, as things sort of devolve, with atonal combinations building. By the one-third mark everything has slowed down significantly, and the players are blending together, with fewer melodies standing out. Instead, it's almost more drone than not; and at a half hour in, most of the strings have been reduced to slowly changing tones. As we near the end we’re hearing beautiful layers of string drones, descending into the final few minutes of nearly static notes. It's an intriguing and oddly listenable composition given its atonality. The early moments bring to mind Michael Nyman, and the later movements summon thoughts of Tony Conrad and La Monte Young, but it's clearly different from any of them, and more than the sum of those parts.
 Young Slo-Be — Red Mamba (KoldGreedy Entertainment / Thizzler On The Roof)
youtube
Who picked it? Ray Garraty
Did we review it? No.
Ian Mathers’ take:
The 12 tracks on Red Mamba fly by in a little over 27 minutes (not a one breaks the three-minute mark) but the result doesn’t feel slight so much as pared down to a sharpness you might cut yourself on. Stockon’s Young Slo-Be only seems to have one flow (or maybe it’d be more accurate to say he only seems interested in one) but he knows how to wield it with precision and force, and if the subject matter hews closely to the accepted canon of gangbanger concerns, Slo-Be delivers it all with vivid language and the studied, superior disdain of an older brother explaining the world to you and busting your chops at the same time. The tracks on Red Mamba all come from different producers, but Slo-Be consistently chooses spectral, eerie, foreboding backgrounds for these songs, even when adding piano and church bells (on “Asshole”), dog barks (“21 Thoughts”) or even Godfather-esque strings (the closing “Rico Swavo”). What’s the old line about the strength of street knowledge? These are different streets, and different knowledge.
[Translation] 90′s Retrospective - Dou Wei and Radiohead meet in Hong Kong
Since Faye was there that night [photo], I’ve decided to translate the write ups.
DATE: June 12, 1994 VENUE: Ko Shan Theatre, Hong Kong
In the 80s and 90s, Ko Shan Theatre was Hong Kong's legendary rock shrine and was known as the "holy land of rock".  It was the site of many important moments in the indie and underground music scene in Hong Kong. Foreign alternative musicians also performed there such as Peter Murphy, former lead singer of British gothic rock band Bauhaus, the American hip hop group Public Enemy, and the son of Bob Marley - Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers.
In 1994, Radiohead made a tour stop in Hong Kong and played at Ko Shan. It was one year after their debut album "Pablo Honey" had been released and preceded the upcoming "My Iron Lung" EP. The opening act that night was former Black Panther lead singer Dou Wei.
Yuen Chi-Chung, founder of legendary Hong Kong based independent music magazine Music Colony Bi-weekly (MCB), attended this concert. According to his recollection, he saw Faye Wong standing beside him, watching Dou Wei's performance.
Radiohead had been looking for guest acts throughout Asia. At that time, the agency had a headache while trying to choose the opening band. Whether it was Hong Kong or Mainland China, the more well-known bands were mostly into heavy metal music or old-fashioned rock, not quite in line with Radiohead's style.
Finally, when they heard Dou Wei's song "Black Dream", they immediately decided on him.
Zhou Fengling, guitarist and Dou Wei's bandmate (who later went on to compose the song “Anesthesia” for Faye), said that one day in 1994, he suddenly received a call from Dou Wei.
Dou Wei said casually: "Let's perform together."
Zhou Fengling asked: "Where?"
Dou Wei replied: "Hong Kong."
Zhou Fengling was already intrigued and asked: "Who are you with?"
Dou Wei said: "Radiohead."
"I'm coming!" Zhou Fengling, who was lying down, sat up quickly with excitement.
Zhou Fengling once watched Radiohead's music video and was deeply drawn to their music. He never imagined that he would have this opportunity.
Tumblr media
Dou Wei and his band gifted traditional Chinese instruments to Radiohead.
On the night of the performance, the audience was filled with mostly foreigners coming to see Radiohead. Backstage Dou Wei's musicians were both nervous and excited as they looked forward to their Hong Kong debut.
With the sound of Zhou Fengling's guitar, the performance officially began. The audience exceeded his imagination. Zhou Fengling recalled that when he walked to the front of the stage, the audience was so enthusiastic, they almost pulled him down.
In the 40-minute set, the songs performed by Dou Wei were mostly from his "Black Dream" album. Facing a critical foreign audience, Dou Wei's works were not inferior, which surprised everyone present, including Radiohead backstage.
There is no doubt that this show was an absolute success. The media in Hong Kong gave high marks to this performance and a newspaper wrote: "After watching this avant-garde and spectacular performance, do you still feel that mainland people are unsophisticated?"
After the gig, the two bands exchanged gifts in a packed bar.
Zhou Fengling gave one of his pendants to the guitarist of Radiohead, and he in-turn gifted the pendant around his neck to Zhou Fengling. Interestingly, one year later when Zhou Fengling saw Radiohead again in a magazine, his pendant was also in the picture.
During the performance that night, Dou Wei and his band left a deep impression on Radiohead. It is said that Radiohead later invited them to perform in Europe, but it was not possible due to visa problems. Later, Radiohead also offered to produce Dou Wei's new album, but was politely declined by Dou Wei.
always v odd when it feels like an overwhelming amount of the dnp audience say that they don’t connect w dan’s music taste or style or merch and im over here like, i listen to primarily hip hop/rap or pretentious indie bullshit and i too cry real tears over frank ocean. dan’s graphic design hoodie was some of the best merch i’ve seen and i snatched that shit up the second i got paid. i too only wear black and if i had dan’s financial stability, would own so much of his clothes too.
it’s not odd that they don’t connect with it, because everyone has different taste but it feels kind of isolating from this side? like i see so many more people vocalize that they are less down with dan’s music/merch style than phil’s? and for me it’s the complete opposite.
it’s also this weird sense of like, weirdness when i learn more about dan’s interests where i’m like.........o same..........o..same........o, same??? and it makes me feel WEIRD. i just wanna talk about queer theory, political and systemic oppression, drag race, and musical artists w dan
Do you think "Miss You" could be revived? (Promoted along with Louis' upcoming single.) It's such a great song, and the problem isn't that it flopped, it's that it never got a chance in the first place. If Louis' single is "Always You," that's a softer/slower song, right? So the two together would showcase a wider range of his talent. And if given a chance, it should do great on radio.
I’d love that! It’s a tribute to pop punk, the kind of music Louis loves. Like any song with Louis’ vocals, it has a softness and vulnerability because of the timbre of his voice, unlike the typical punk growl.
It belongs somewhere between pop and rock, and is therefore in a genre that is struggling right now.
At the moment, streaming hugely favors hip hop, R&B, and dance (EDM, trap, house, Latinx, Kpop). Streaming has been displacing album sales as markers of success. Revenue largely comes from touring and merch— and labels are scrambling to capitalize on this trend.
Traditional pop artists collaborating with stars of Spotify and Soundcloud, or incorporating those elements into their music, testify to their increasing power. This sound is evident in Taylor’s Reputation, in Ed Sheeran’s Divide. In Liam’s collabs with Zedd and Quavo. In Nicki Minaj’s collaborating with 6ix9ine (Fefe represents a huge percentage—more than 50%— of the streams from her last album, and it was tacked on after the official album release). Artists working with Drake and Kanye show their popularity.
So to chart at all, big pop albums: 1. need to have a huge single that streams well (e.g. thank u, next), 2. are bundled with tour or merch to cheat the numbers. Most recently, this was the strategy of Zayn selling his CD with merch, of Taylor with her tour, of Travis Scott, etc.
Another way that a pop or rock song can succeed is by “synching” with advertisement or film. A song from an album being used for a commercial or a movie can hugely elevate album sales, especially for an unknown artist.
The last strategy is not to release an album at all, and avoid the expenses of album launch and promotion (which, for a beginning artist, can be substantial), but focus on singles that culminate in a tour— since tour is where the money is. This is a viable strategy for an artist with a built-in tour audience— which might include Louis.
I think the landscape for pop chart success is very different now than five years ago, when One Direction released Midnight Memories. Times were sweet and stable in 2013. The popular taste, like our politics, has shifted. These days popular taste wants anarchy and chaotic celebration, instant fame, superficial drama. Radio is also not the only gatekeeper to music anymore. Streaming has taken over. Spotify, Apple Music, Shazam, SoundCloud are all arguably more important to artists. They need to get on these platforms and be innovative (Behind the Album specials, Beats1 specials, Spotify special sessions).
So a lot of challenges for pop artists in general, and for our One Direction guys because their musical history.
Do you have any headcanons about the lost character's music tastes?
Ooh, thank for allowing me to come into my askbox and be pleasantly surprised (i tensed up thinking i was gonna see a hate message)And I didn’t even have to ask!
Most of this is what I’ve gleaned from canon (and expansions there upon), and also bear in mind I don’t exactly know the details of the genres of music, so specific bands may be lost of me. But thank you for asking
Jack: canon into classic rock. (i checked, Nirvana specifically) which is hilarious because Jack is, and I mean this in a loving way, a piece of stale white bread. other music is lost on him but he’ll move his head awkwardly to most songs out of politeness. it’s also very subtly implied that jack wanted to be a piano player instead of a doctor and we even see him playing rather nicely. so theres that
Kate: in a flashback we saw her wearing a Janis Joplin shirt (amazingly when they were writing Kate, they thought they were making a straight character. hah) so I figure she likes that kind of music, like… women with croaky voices singing about pain and love. throw Alanis Morissette in there too. plus, she was excited when she realised who Charlie is, so throw a little punk rock in there. or at the very least Kate heard You All Everybody on the radio and enjoyed it. i’ve pictured her getting into some bops too, e.g I Feel Like A Woman by Shania Twain. i like to imagine her getting into that whilst making breakfastCharlie: we know Charlie’s taste. and he declares himself an “expert on all things musical” so i gather he loves music in general. favours punk rock tho. the kind of Fuck The System rock that he thinks he’s making. you just know Charlie loved the Sex Pistols. he’s also canon a fan of The Kinks (snort) and Oasis. and he must be a Beatles fan (such a pom) because he has some lyrics of theirs tattoo’d on his shoulder (thanks to his actor)Daniel: canonically adores classical music and… Driveshaft (which just tickles me pink, i imagine he has all their albums, which would be at least three in the limbo world) so apparently loves punk rock too. i imagine Driveshaft is he favourite band and he recognises they have hit or misses and aren’t That Great but he just thinks they’re neat. he loves all classical music but his favourite composer is chopin. (referencing to how fantaisie-impromptu by chopin is His Song). he also creates music himself and apparently has experimental tastes for it. as made clear to me by his story, music is his ultimate special interest. specifically involving the piano. live your dreams, babyLocke: owns both of Driveshaft’s albums (expressed that the first was better) if Daniel didn’t do his concert thing I’d say locke is the biggest fan of driveshaft of all our characters. make of that what you will, it’s just funny picturing Locke listening to and enjoying Charlie’s music. i also see him liking Johnny CashShannon: doesn’t like Driveshaft. i imagine she enjoys pop music. the kind you can dance and bop ur head to in a club or something. she was also a ballet teacher so i figure she has at least a passing interest in classical music. we also cannot forget the time she sang La Mer for Sayid and it was beautifulHurley: also did not enjoy Driveshaft (i keep mentioning that because i’ve kept track of who doesn’t and does like Charlie’s music, it amuses me). i hadn’t thought about this before but i can genuinely see Hurley enjoying hip hop & rap music. imagine him attempting to sing along to a fast paced verse but fumbling but he’s enjoying himself anyways and even making up words. great. also i just remembered hurley had a walkman for like the first season until it broke and that provided a variety of background music. i cannot recall genres tho. but basically hurley has good taste and fuck this show uses music wellMichael: canon into bob marley so michael must be into reggae. easy going listening, something you can roll your shoulders toCharlotte: she seems to love Geronimo Jackson (a fictional band within the lost universe) and based on their era (the 70s) and their cover art, i presume this shit was hippie-ish and psychedelic. maybe funky too. since she’ll be dating daniel, she’ll have to tolerate driveshaft and she personally considers them OkayMiles: EMO. EMO ROCK. EMO PUNK. WAKE ME UP (WAKE ME UP INSIDE). i don;t have specific examples bcuz i dunno this genre but yeeeahhh. the 90s kind too because lost is set in 2004 and like, we saw how he dressed in the 90s. wowee. (i don’t think the emo examples i can think of were even a think in 2004). also i hc he thinks driveshaft are utter shit and thinks daniel has bad taste (but tolerates it. like, its garbage but it makes daniel happy). miles’ parents are canon into jazz and country, miles is not. and i think he regards country as off puttingDesmond: if he never has to listen to “make your own kinda music” ever again, it’ll still be too soon. so canon dislikes driveshift (basically regarded it as shit in the most tactful way possible). but i never thought about what would desmond like, just what he doesn’t like [shrug emoji] …for whatever reason, i got a burst of, MAYBE DESMOND LIKES QUEEN?? therefore it is decided. besides, who doesn’t love queen? AND i hc that des was a theatre kid when he was young so make of that headcanon what you re. music taste. (he’s not an expert or anything like that, but i think he’d know a good tune when he hears it)Juliet: when you’re alone and life is making you lonely you can always go
downtowni dunno what genre that song is but it’s good, i like that song too. i’ve associated it with juliet ever since this show. (same with wonderwall and charlie)Sawyer: bit stereotypical but i think it’s fair to say… country rock? i can see it. also i imagine he (and juliet) got in geronimo jackson during the dharma times. oh and sawyer is also canon into bob marley (it was a nice bonding moment)
Richard: i just wanna mention richard to be in awe over the fact that he’s heard music evolution over like 180 years and that’s so cool. also i imagine he loved 60s & 70s music (and has the era appropriate dance moves)Ben: a long time ago i headcanon’d that his favourite song is “you are my sunshine” and i’m not going back on that. he used to sing to alex when she was a baby. also plays and likes classical piano because of course he doesClaire: her favourite song is Catch A Falling Star for emotional reasons. besides that? into enya-type music and ballads. sarah mclachlan and sarah brightman type singers also. would be indifferent to or even not like driveshaft music if, you know, it didn’t involve her dead soulmate. so she gets the albums and merch (for free from liam, of course) and cries about it. as ya do. oh, oh and she loves abba! because pretty much every australian loves abba! (especially queer australians, even if claire doesn’t know she’s queer yet)Sun: canon knows how to play piano classical music and i think to myself, maybe due to that, she doesn’t actually like the genre. like i imagine she was forced to learn piano (ya know rich ppl) so she has negative feelings about itBoone: i’m hearing something when picturing him, which i may have to classify as prog rock / college rock. early 2000s style, you get me?and for anybody else interested in the music used in the show and listened to by the characters within here’s this: https://lostpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Songs
Fresh Artist Friday Catch-Up: GAGE
If you are an OG Fresh Artist Friday reader, you will definitely remember GAGE. The indie artist who we first fell in love with after his album Lord of the fly 2 is back and ready to deliver more incredible music. I Am Legend is the latest album from the Silver Spring MD/Washington DC native now living in Miami. The album is already performing impressively, holding the number one trending hip hop/rap album on its release date March 9th 2022 and on March 10th 2022 on Audiomack. It is expected to continue to do very well in the streaming world.
Our team had a few stand out tracks we want to make sure you listen to! Our founder Chi Chi thought GAGE’s talent especially shines on the song “Gem Star Razor'‘. GAGE cleverly plays with the song’s structure and switches up his normal flow and cadence to pull you in. She was also quick to point out the sampling of "Lord Knows” in the song '‘King of Culture'‘, which was also done by Drake in his song “Lord Knows'“ featuring Rick Ross. GAGE brings his tone, lyricism and bravado to a new level on ‘King of Culture'‘ as he rides the choir’s vocals throughout the track.
In “Hood CNN“ GAGE speaks his mind about racism, politics, the hip hop industry, and more, coming up with some powerful and bold lyrics that will leave you thinking. Later on in the album, we see a different side of GAGE in “Her Song”. Rooted in a sample of SZA’s “Hit Different”, GAGE speaks from the heart about his girl. He talks about the relationship they have together and is an interesting change of pace for the rarely-romantic rapper. The album is closed by “The Last Jedi”, a fitting title for the rising star who is sure to make it big with his undeniable talent.
Check out our first feature on GAGE here and connect with GAGE through his socials to make sure you never miss new music. Remember to follow Hip Hop Scriptures to stay updated on the latest Fresh Artist Friday.
ARTIST BIO:
GAGE is an American hip-hop artist From Washington DC/Silver Spring MD and is now based out of Miami. As one of the preeminent up and coming indie artists, Gage embodies a casual grace and truth that is reflected in the music he makes. Gage grew up listening to a lot of old school music like Motown because as he puts it "My parents were heavy into music" so any day you would hear James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, and Diana Ross playing at his house. But as he grew older he started listening to hip-hop acts like Snoop Dogg, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas and 2pac and before that, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, and Slick Rick. As a kid Gage had a strong passion for art and would draw everyday. As his love for hip hop grew that passion for drawing turned into writing music in the hopes of one day being like the artists who inspired him and who he grew up listening to by telling his story that fans can relate to. His remarkable talent has led to 5 indie albums and a few singles released on all streaming services Independently, he runs the indie label Heatrock Entertainment with his brother Missin' Lync.
