None would have predicted that so many quadruple jumps would be performed by so many skaters 2 years ago! It use to be 2, now were up to 6 in 1 program! Each quadruple is a 4x360 degree turns in midair! 1440 degrees times 6 only for those specific jumps! Could end up being 12 jumps in 8 tries! My God! So enjoy the quadfest later today... @Regrann from @best_figureskaters - I Love the step sequence of Boyang Jin ❤️😍 which men short program is your favourite/favourites this year? I think that my favourites in the short are, Boyang, Yuzuru, Shoma, Han Yan and Jason Brown 😬😬too many🤔😬😍 #maoasada #evgeniamedvedeva #yunakim #adelinasotnikova #elizavetatuktamysheva #julialipnitskaya #mikiando #graciegold #ashleywagner #elenaradionova #zijunli #polinaedmunds #satokomiyahara #wakabahiguchi #maimihara #annapogorilaya #figureskating #carolinakostner #elizabettursynbaeva #marinhonda #mirainagasu #iceskating #karenchen #boyangjin #china - #regrann

Skating Off-Season Weekly Roundup: Shibutanis' and Others' Music
Skating Off-Season Weekly Roundup: Shibutanis’ and Others’ Music
This wasn’t an easy week for anyone, including American skating fans. As well as the potentially demise of the rule of law and democracy in their country, they also had to deal with the divorce woes of the greatest skater the U.S. has ever produced. Apparently Michelle Kwan’s husband treated her pretty shabbily too, not telling her he was filing for divorce, and she had to find out on Twitter. As…

Three hours and 21 skaters after the U.S. Figure Skating Championships short program began Wednesday night, Karen Chen finally took the ice at SAP Center and began her defense of the U.S. title and answering a question that has persisted within the sport for much of the season.
Which Chen would show up this week?
The skater who was untouchable at the 2017 U.S. Championships and just missed a medal at the World Championships?
Or 18-year-old bundle of nerves and uncertainty who struggled through the fall’s Grand Prix circuit and the pressures of being the favorite for the U.S. title in an Olympic season?
Among those wondering was Chen herself.
“I’m not going to lie. I was extremely nervous,” she said. “The short (program) has always been something that I always put a great deal of pressure on myself, because you want to be in a good position for the long.”
Chen, the Bay Area native who trains in Riverside, is in such a position heading into Friday’s free skate, sitting third, within striking distance of Bradie Tennell, the surprise leader, and Mirai Nagasu, a 2010 Olympian.
“She’s in the ballgame,” said Tammy Gambill, Chen’s coach.
The surprising Tennell, an Illinois 19-year-old, is the leader in the clubhouse after posting a 73.79 mark, the highest short program score in U.S. Championship’s history.
“I feel like it went exactly how I practiced it,” said Tennell, who was ninth at last year’s nationals.
Nagasu is a close second with a season-best 73.02 mark despite stumbling on a triple axel, her opening jump and the most anticipated element of the night. Earlier this season Nagasu became only the third American woman and the first in more than a decade to land the triple axel in competition.
That ability to land the triple axel set the longtime Arcadia resident apart from the other top contenders in her bid to avenge a controversial decision by a U.S. Figure Skating selection committee to leave her off the 2014 Olympic team. Nagasu finished third in the 2014 U.S. Championships in Boston but was bumped by Ashley Wagner, the fourth-place finisher at the U.S. Championships.
“I feel really great about how things have gone,” Nagasu said of her performance Wednesday.
As much as anything, Chen was relieved to finish third Wednesday with a 69.48 despite wobbling out of a triple lutz, triple toe-loop early in an otherwise solid program.
“I’m overall pretty pleased with how everything went,” Chen said. “I’m glad I held up on all my jumps and stood up and didn’t land on my butt. Definitely there were some little mistakes, but things I can fix for the long program.”
Wagner, the three-time U.S. Champion and 2016 World silver medalist, stumbled on the back half of a triple flip, triple toe-loop combination then went on to sell an upbeat, mistake-free program.
“Alright,” Wagner said after the program. “I can live with that.”
But the mistake and her low component marks left her with a 65.94 score and in fifth place, although still close enough to salvage a place on the podium Friday night.
Skating last Wednesday night only added to the nerves of Chen, fourth at the 2017 World Championships, who has struggled in her first full season in the international spotlight.
“I remember starting off this season thinking last season was pretty crazy but this season so far been even crazier,” Chen said. “It’s literally a stock market. There’s so many ups and downs and it’s unpredictable.”
Chen opened the Grand Prix season with a disappointing seventh-place finish at Skate Canada and then continued to have problems, especially in the short program, at Skate America, where she was eighth.
So Wednesday was the confidence booster she and Gambill have been looking for all season.
“I was really happy with that,” Gambill said. “She had a rough time with the short this fall and so I was glad to see her get back on track and be the fierce little competitor I know she is. I think she just had so much pressure on her, she just tried a little bit too hard and stiffened up a little bit. So she just needed to relax a little bit and just let it happen.”
Polina Edmunds faced similar expectations after finishing second at the 2014 U.S. Championships as a tall, skinny 15-year-old.
The four years since Boston, however, have not been kind to Edmunds.
Edmunds, who grew up in San Jose, was eighth in the Sochi Olympics and then won the 2015 Four Continents title. But Edmunds struggled to maintain her top form as she grew, a battle compounded by a foot injury that robbed her of nearly two seasons.
A bone bruise on the navicular bone in her right foot was first diagnosed in February 2016. After an extended break from training the injury resurfaced in June 2016 and then again two months later after another lay-off. The injury continued to linger forcing Edmunds out of two Grand Prix competitions in the fall of 2016 and last year’s U.S. Championships.
It wasn’t until March 2017 that she was finally able to resume training, splitting her time between rinks in San Jose and Oakland.
“It’s been a very, very difficult comeback for me,” Edmunds said. “Coming back from my injury. I grew a lot. I just had a tough time trying to gather my jumps back with the changes that were happening as well as knowing because I injured my foot and the particular injury I had I had to be very careful coming back. So even when I was trying my hardest and doing as much, I couldn’t do the same full training regime that I had before my injury because that could risk becoming injured again.”
Edmunds skated first Wednesday night, two hours before the first of the top contenders took the ice, in a place both familiar and foreign.
“I usually go into competitions and pretend that I’m in San Jose,” Edmunds said. “It’s just another practice. But since we’re in San Jose I was telling myself over and over again. I’m just in Oakland right now. It’s just another practice.”
She delivered a solid, if watered down program, earning a score of 63.78 that was surpassed by the very next skater, Angela Wang (67.00).
“It’s been a very slow and tough process but to be able to come here to the U.S. Championships in my hometown and nail a short program just makes me so proud and so happy,” Edmunds said.
“My goal to skate well in my hometown. Honestly there’s a lot going on. It’s the Olympic season. It’s a national championship. But I’ve already been through it all.  I’ve made an Olympic team so I’m forever an Olympian. Which is pretty awesome.”
Another Olympian took notice of Edmunds’ performance.
“Great SP @PolinaEdmunds!!! Hometown girl doesn’t disappoint,” tweeted Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1992 Olympic champion who in recent months has become something of a mentor to Edmunds.
“Because my comeback has been such a struggle on me and my team and my family it means so much to have someone like Kristi behind me,” Edmunds said. “To have her support me in my comeback and to really believe in me, believe that I can have a great comeback and help me return my jumps I have so much gratitude and I’m so thankful that she’s standing with me at nationals to show everyone everything we’ve gone through basically.”

evan_bates: Dear @polinaedmunds and @adaripp, sometimes life's a bear. It can maul you and leave you feeling down and out. But then you can come back on that bear like Leo in The Revenant and skin it and wear it for a coat. So, I guess what I'm saying is, wear the bear. Yeah, wear the bear. Get well soon. Love, Evan
