2.2.18 > 2.2.22. Today marks the 4th anniversary since I started ‘On Ice Perspectives’. To mark it, I decided to take a deep dive into my camera roll from that time, and put into words what I remembered from that week. I had just invested in my first DSLR, an upgrade from the GoPro I had been filming with all winter long. I had never seen anything like the videos I was making (I, Tonya wouldn’t come out until Feb 16th, and all the ads for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics never seemed to hold a skating shot long enough to connect emotionally with the skating). I realized I had stumbled across something new that I truly enjoyed and wanted to share. ‘Figure skating cinematography’ was definitely a niche though, and I knew I had to create a specific page for it. “Ice? Where we’re going we don’t need… ice!” Skating with a time machine was an achievement I didn’t even know I could unlock. Last Sunday on @DancingOnIce was ‘Movie Week’, and we got to introduce Phil and Holly driving in Europe’s one and only official DeLorean Time Machine from @BTTFCar. I even had a moment to sit in the same seat where MJF sat on his first ever Comic Con. Still working on those hover skates though! @icegirlash and Timothy LeDuc’s 2021-22 Senior Pairs Short Program is now available on On Ice Perspectives’ YouTube channel. It was meant to premiere with their debut performance this weekend at Cranberry Cup. Unfortunately, in the week between filming this and leaving for competition, Ashley was exposed to COVID-19, and despite being a world class athlete, fully-vaccinated, and wearing masks with her students, she was still affected enough to need hospitalization and miss their first competition since Worlds. The good news is that Ash is already doing better, testing negative again and will soon be out of quarantine and back to preparing for her and Tim’s next competition. It’s important for us all to remember that COVID-19 is still a serious and deadly disease, not just for the unvaccinated, or immunocompromised, but also for the people in our lives we’d least expect. To protect them and get to the end of this pandemic, we need to stay vigilant with masks in crowded spaces, follow social distancing guidelines, and most importantly, get you and your loved ones vaccinated to protect against the worst side effects and reduce the spread of variants. I myself choose all three, and am grateful for the opportunity, and privilege, to travel and film and bring skating to everyone who cannot experience it in person right now. Three years ago today I made my first trip to the @iceacademyofmontreal, and the first video I posted was @oliviasmartx and @adriandiazbronchud training the Tango Romantica, the 2018-19 season’s Pattern Dance… So it’s only fitting that on my first trip back to Montreal this year, I get to share this clip of Olivia and Adrian training this season’s Pattern Dance, the Midnight Blues! The theme for Rhythm Dance this year is “Street Dance”, with official rulebook examples ranging from blues to reggae, jazz to funk, and even hip-pop, popping and krump.
