Serge Lutens Point Du Jour, Penhaligon's The Dandy, Akro Smile and other reviews - 2024
And we're back! -- Reviews of new releases from Serge Lutens, Penhaligon's and Akro, as well as thoughts on some vintage finds from Chanel and Montana.
Given that Love At First Scent has been off the air for several weeks, it was perhaps appropriate that the first post-summer review was of a scent inspired by daybreak: the brand new Serge Lutens Point Du Jour, composed, as ever, by Christopher Sheldrake. A decidedly more nocturnal affair followed in the form of Penhaligon’s The Dandy (Fabrice Pellegrin), bridged by the mid-afternoon contentment…

Chanel Coromandel
Tumblr media
Nose: Jacques Polge
notes: bitter orange, neroli, citrus; patchouli, orris, rose, jasmine; benzoin, white chocolate, woody notes, incense, vanilla, olibanum, musk
Well, I don't know what I expected.
Coromandel is exactly what it sounds like -- a luxurious, Frenchified, chocolatey patchouli -- and I do not like it one bit.
There's a very strong "evil" feeling to Coromandel, some sweet, ominous synthetic labdanum-esque chord, that I can recognize as aesthetically coherent but is really off-putting for me. I don't know how else to explain it but it's a *hostile* smell; fundamentally unfriendly and toxic, with intensely mainstream corporate vibes.
There's an iris-based, light and creamy aura around the basic dark core, reinfored by bright aromachemicals, that keeps it impressively radiant rather than bottom-heavy as patchouli scents often are. There's even a hint of citrus to lighten it further. I'm really starting to appreciate this luxe dark/light balance. And while the chocolate is potent, it's not remotely like a literal dessert: it's very clearly dark, woody, ambered patchouli with a smooth cocoa tonality. This is a hell of a competent perfume.
The "evil" amber burns off in an hour or so, leaving a much more pleasant smooth blend of iris, vanilla, and chocolatey patchouli with a faint smoky edge. This part is quite lovely -- it's the world's creamiest, cuddliest, most refined patchouli and it's endlessly comforting. The dark amber and creamy iris produce a "fancy-lotion" effect sort of like Cuir Ottoman or Dior Ambre Nuit. I find this phase fairly pleasant -- and it lasts FOREVER, more than a day and through a bath.

In 1953, when artist Nicolas de Stael (1914 - 1955) set up his atelier in Ménerbes, inside a stone house at the edge of a bluff, the fortified village was still an unknown sleepy hamlet. Fueled by a new amorous passion and deeply inspired by the verdant landscape of Provence, de Staël produced 254 paintings in only fifteen months.
During this same period, De Staël also embarked on a voyage to Sicily with Jeanne Polge, his mistress, with whom he had passionate ill-fated 6-month love affair. Italy’s sweeping sunlit views infused the artist’s palette with a new luminosity, inspiring a relentless output of new works.
Then, fifteen months later, the artist took his own life throwing himself headfirst off the roof of his rented apartment on the ramparts of Antibes at age 41.
*** Born in St Petersburg, Nicolas de Staël fled to Poland with his family in 1919. After his parents’ death, he lived in Brussels before leaving for Paris to study painting. He admired Braque and Kandinsky and befriended the poet René Char, who was a neighbor in Ménerbes, as was another of his friends, Dora Maar. Although de Staël belonged to no particular school of painters and his relatively short career only lasted 19 years, he is widely recognized today– which was not the case during his lifetime.

CHANEL - GABRIELLE CHANEL L'EAU - Eau de Parfum - Novità 2024 -
Oh fresh radious sparkling flowers! A new joyful blend of these four emblematic Chanel flowers: jasmine, tuberose, ylangylang, orange blossom in perfect harmony with red fruits vibe. Once again, it’s a call to be you, elatedly free.
.

I hear the briefs of brands that declare they want to create a "classic" like No. 5. This is a false notion. We should try create a perfume of its time, and perhaps it can become a classic.
— Jacques Polge, head perfumer at Les Parfums Chanel 1978–2015, lamenting the state of his craft and industry.

An Artificial Perfume - Olivier Polge On The Creation Of Chanel Comete
— There’s this sentence that I always repeat: she asked for “an artificial perfume.” Artificial in the sense that she didn’t want the scent to smell exactly like a rose or a jasmine or a lily of the valley, but a combination of all those scents that would make the perfume into something else. She made a parallel with making dresses, shaping a silhouette, combining different fabrics, and that was…

 Best Male Perfume
Discovering the most effective perfume for male  is a challenging endeavour. I would know since I've been looking for it for days. I made the decision to get a new perfume last year. I've never been a great fan of perfume in general—I've met far too many individuals whose perfume overwhelms you as soon as you meet them, their lavender or citrus notes hitting you square in the face—but something about the year before that has made me want to part with money on a new male perfume.
The elements and aroma layers that make up a fragrance are referred to as a perfume's notes. The top, heart, and base of a note are three main categories of notes that can be divided into. Top notes are the first fragrances to be recognized while spritzing a perfume. They disappear quickly, lasting about 5 to 15 minutes. Top notes are often lighter than the other notes.
On the other hand, heart notes add fresh smells while additionally offering a seamless transition from the top notes. Heart notes, as the name implies, make up the majority of the final aroma and may stay for up to an hour.
Top 6 perfume brands for male
1.Al Haramain L’aventure Knight Cologne
Al Haramain Perfumes' L'Aventure Knight is an Amber Fougere smell for men as well. In 2018, L'Aventure Knight was released. Lemon Verbena, Bergamot, and Tea are the highest notes; Violet Leaf and Iris are the bottom and base notes, however; Powdery Notes, Ambergris, Sandalwood, and Musk are the notes that are strongest.
2.Chanel Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfume
2010 saw the release of Chanel's refined and elegant fragrance, Bleu de Chanel. In the summer of 2014, Chanel released Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum, an improved version. The scent is dedicated to independence—to unlimited, profound, and eternal freedom.
Jacques Polge's woody-aromatic piece maintains the initial path whilst deviating into the sensuous and exotic amber realm. This variation's wood remains the original's freshness while being complemented with rich, smooth amber woods.
3.Dior sauvage perfume
Male's Sauvage Parfum by Dior is an Amber Fougere aroma. In 2019, Sauvage Parfum created its debut. Francois Demachy is the nose who developed the scent in question. Bergamot, Mandarin Orange, and Elemi are the top notes; Sandalwood, is the middle note; and Olibanum, Tonka Bean, and Vanilla, the base notes.
4. Al haramain Opulent Saffron Cologne
Al haramain Opulent Saffron Cologne boasts balsamic, powdery and floral accords for a tender but seductive aroma it truly is sure to get you noticed in any room you enter. Top notes of bergamot cherry blossom create a stellar starting that is each zesty and complex. Meanwhile, middle notes of amaretto, rose, heliotrope and other powdery notes simplest similarly decorate the charismatic bouquet. Finishing the elixir are base notes of tonka bean, amber and suede for a heat, soothing comedown you'll need to have lingering to your clothes for hours into the nighttime.
5.Hermes H24
Hermes H24 perfume is the label’s first fragrance for “the current man”. It contains the function notes of narcissus, clary sage, and rosewood. This perfume is perfect for the summer and springtime, plus the warming rosewood makes it a year-round favourite too. In case you don’t like to wear the identical fragrance days in a row, maybe this one trades your thoughts. It’s very lengthy-lasting and perfectly particular.
6.Gucci The Alchemist’s Garden The Last Day of Summer
Gucci The Alchemist’s Garden The Last Day of Summer is a work of art, from the whimsical lacquer bottle to the warm, spring scents that live inside. Just like the name suggests, this is a fragrance harking back to the ultimate days of summer season spent lazing around in lush gardens. Inspired with the aid of alchemy, Gucci creates an addicting heady scent that promises warmth to the wearer. That is a fragrance that is best for layering, letting the consumer create their very own personalised combination of scents.
