Pokemon Card of the Day #2941: Rainbow Brush (Celestial Storm)

Rainbow Brush was a new Item in Celestial Storm, and it had you choose an Energy card attached to 1 of your Pokemon. You then got to search your deck for a basic Energy card and switch it with that Energy, and the first Energy was shuffled into the deck. If you were trying to tech in an off-type Pokemon into a deck there was some use for this, but since Rainbow Energy and later Aurora Energy existed you'd probably just use that in almost any deck trying to do this.

Empoleon

Moves: Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Metal Claw, Aqua Jet

Yuu’s starter Pokemon, Empoleon, has been with Yuu since her school days and since he was a little Piplup. If she was feeling down because of schoolwork, he was there to cheer her on. If she was going out for errands, he was there to help her. Ever the reliable and responsible one, the rest of the team look up to him as their leader. Of course, Yuu and the others are always there for him just as he is for them. Usually the voice of reason and peacemaker.

Staraptor

Moves: Close Combat, Brave Bird, Aerial Ace, Double Team

Yuu met Staraptor as a Starly while she was on a family trip to Lake Valor. He’s a tough guy kind of bird with a soft heart. The sort of big brother who would fight with his own two fists (or in this case, his wings and talons) for you to the ends of the earth. The one who intimidates others just from how he looks. Best friends with Empoleon.

Kirlia

Moves: Psychic, Calm Mind, Draining Kiss, Disarming Voice

Yuu met Kirlia as a Ralts on Route 208. Her school was holding a practical class on travel safety and essentials there. While Yuu was setting up her tent, she found a Ralts looking at the class curiously from behind a tree. The curious Ralts wanted to help Yuu, and when she informed the teacher, Ralts was allowed to help her and to roam around the campsite. Once the practical class was over, Ralts didn’t want to leave Yuu’s side, so she caught her. The big sister of the group.

Lampent

Moves: Inferno, Shadow Ball, Confuse Ray, Fire Spin

Yuu met Lampent as a Litwick when she and her family went to Unova. They traveled to pay respects to a relative’s Pokemon at the Celestial Tower. While there, they found a Litwick tending to the Pokemon’s grave. He stayed by their side the entire time they were in Unova, and then decided to come with Yuu when they were going to leave. Will spit embers at disrespectful people.

Sylveon

Moves: Fairy Wind, Misty Terrain, Moonblast, Swift

Yuu met Sylveon as an Eevee at her relative’s ranch. She was a wild Eevee that came around the ranch often because of the open space. She helped out here and there and the ranchers basically deemed her one of their own even if they never caught her. Yuu was helping around the ranch the same day that Eevee came by and the two hit it off. Loves to help out.

Alolan Vulpix

Moves: Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Aurora Beam, Payback

Yuu met Vulpix on a trip to Alola. Her brother, Subaru, managed to win a trip for three to Alola from a raffle. Their parents insisted that their children all take the trip together, and so the siblings flew to Alola for a week. While hiking through Mount Lanakila, they came across a family of Ninetales and Vulpix, and one of the Vulpix took a shine to Yuu. The little sister of the group and can be quite feisty.

I don't enough people talk about the absolute potential that Betrayed!Marinette and Betrayed!Ash have if they ever met/crossed universes. One one hand, you have Marinette who is the guardian of the miraculous and Ladybug, able to bring back the dead and repair damage after an Akuma attack. On the other, you have the Alola champion and the chosen one who have saved the world more times than I can count and has the favor of the legendary/mythical pokemon. Those two would be an absolute powerhouse and have a sweet sibling dynamic, because I know they would bring their worlds down in a storm of vengeance and revenge. I just know they would be teaching each other about their parts of the world and be teaching each other their languages, only to find out that Kalos is literally just France. Marinette would absolutely be teaching Ash how to bake and how the Miraculous work/how she is a superhero and Ash would be teaching her how to battle with pokemon(Marinette gets an Eevee, change my mind).

Now onto the traitors, oh boy. So it's no surprise that in almost every Betrayed!Ash fic I have read that Misty is usually one of the traitors and ones tryna kill Ash, tryna make him give up on his dream, and in literally every Betrayed!Marinette fic I have read, Lila makes Marinette's life a living hell. So, the traitor list would be: Misty, Brock, May, Max, Drew, Kenny, Trip, Paul, Tracey, Serena, Delia, Pikachu, Lila, Alya, Rose, Sabrina, Ivan, Mylene, Max, Alix, Kim, Adrien, Mr.Damocles, and Ms.Bustier. Long list right? Well, here are the loyals: Dawn, Clemont, Bonnie, Alain, Marin, The Alola Gang, Regional Profs, Regional Champions, Gladion, Aether Foundation, Legendary/Mythical pokemon, Luka, Juleka, Chloe(she deserves better imo), Nathaniel, Marc, Aurora, Mireille, Zoe, Kagami, Felix, the Kwami's, Fei, the New York superheroes. Marinette's parents aren't dumb enough to belive Lie-la, so they are safe, same with Luka and Juleka's parents and the Celestial guardian(I forgot his name). Hawkmoth and Mayura are still villains, but I know they will stop for a bit to get over the shock of people and pokemon just appearing out of nowhere, which gives Plagg time to go to Marinette for a new holder(Cat Noir!Ash anyone?), so yeah....Imma make this an au because I have zero self control. Imma name it....Betrayed Chosen au(super original I know)

altea, aurora, and medusa are all tied for first; i’ve spent hours thinking abt it and i literally cannot choose a favourite between them, then after that is probably andi and jaxon! i think my favourite doll i own is daria from rainbow high, she’s so pretty and i just connected with her immediately when i got her! i have so many collections lmao there’s the dolls and the sailor moon tapes but also yugioh, ceres celestial legend, pokemon, fushigi yuugi, and cardcaptors tapes (i finished my pokemon and fushigi yuugi collections a while ago which is still super exciting to me), 90s/early 2000s manga (like the editions from that time, for example only 12 volumes of inuyasha were published in the flipped format and since i have all 12 i consider my inuyasha collection complete), frozen merch, and cds! my favourite food is probably italian sausage, and my favourite season is fall!

A mewtwo I colored in to take my mind off some things today; I feel I’d name them Nebula, they work on helping protect pokemon and humanity from any disruptions from celestial forces, dispersing any solar energy over the atmosphere and making really bright auroras. Design Notes: Tenthereal

This line has come an incredibly long way. This is actually a perfect demonstration of how my style has refined over the years to better align with Pokemon designs.

The original inspiration for these was the notion of a poison/dark type with Levitate for an ability, rendering it with no weaknesses. Their hidden ability is called Chemtrail and it summons a weather effect called Acid Rain. Think Hail but for poison types instead of ice types.

All three of them are distinct species of Siphonophore. Fluffloat is Thermopalia taraxaca, Colonoodle is Bathyphysa conifera, and Tenthereal is Praya dubia.

Being that no one else makes fakemon based on Siphonophores (not counting Portuguese man-o-wars), I had to blaze my own trail with how to design these. It really showed with the beta versions. Oof.

I was hesitant about revamping this line for the sole fact that it meant scaling the mountain of Tenthereal’s intricate details. Making even slight tweaks to Tenthereal was always a nightmare because I have to make the negative space in my sprites transparent manually and the previous sprite had tiny bits of negative space everywhere.

Tenthereal’s overall design hasn’t changed drastically, but it’s interesting how I unintentionally brought back the beta version’s “fins” in the form of fingers. The other changes were the purple nodules on its back being made into eyes, and an aurora-like gradient replacing the red and yellow nodules. I also gave it an eyespot on the central body to match Colonoodle’s. But it’s not a total overhaul from the ground up like Colonoodle was.

Tenthereal is the largest sprite I’ve made. I always shoot for 80x80, but with this level of detail and also hugeness, that was never possible. It’s still within 96x96 though. 

Tenthereal was intended to be the largest pokemon (barring the planetoid-sized Telos which would hypothetically only be obtainable as a Wailord-sized newborn), although this was way before Gen 8. It’s at least as large as Eternatus’ base form, though.

Colonoodle was originally stylized similar to Tangela, but it never sat perfectly right with me. I went with more of a Tangrowth look which I have used in the past with a few *cough cough* of my other fakemon. I think out of the three, this is the one whose design glowed up the most.

I struggled with the green on Colonoodle’s “neck”, trying out different looks before settling on that. I think it evokes angel wings while segueing into Tenthereal’s tendrils.

I similarly struggled with Fluffloat and how to stylize its “fluff”, since the way it looked before wasn’t doing it. Now it looks kind of like a cloud, fitting with how these live in the atmosphere and creating a loose theme with Tenthereal’s tendrils resembling an aurora. Colonoodle? Uhhh...weather balloon. Swamp gas.

Colonoodle borrows slight inspiration from the Flying Spaghetti Monster since B. conifera went viral a few years ago with comparisons to that.

I wanted Tenthereal to have a “celestial abomination” vibe, akin to an angel from Neon Genesis Evangelion or Galeem from SSB. I think some Argomon got in there too.

My main Galar OC, who I’ve been using in RP since the game came out and FINALLY have a satisfactory design for - Thuyet Phan!

(Part of the design issue was I was making his hair too smooth at the top - once I gave him Raboot-like tufts in addition to mimicking the Cinderace cheekfur and Scorbunny cowlick, it came together. The idea was for him to look a little like a low-key Scorbunny-line gijinka.) The pointy teeth are purely because I thought it would look cute and I’ve never had a character with Sharp Teeth For No Reason despite it being a design quirk I like a lot.

Originally from Wyndon, but ends up settling in Spikemuth for plot reasons.

His non-Pokemon hobbies are cooking and astronomy; most of his Pokemon have astronomy or celestial-based names. (His Cinderace Nebula is the light of his life.)

A severe Bolthund bite a few years left him with a fear of that species in particular and Electric Pokemon and thunder/lightning in general; he adopted a Raichu that kept following him for curry in an attempt to assuage that fear, but it just ended up with him only liking his Raichu once he got over being afraid of him.

A thing I learned while writing him: he talks a lot if you let him. He’ll ramble for paragraphs if something catches his interest. He’s the epitome of that ‘look how hard I can talk about my special interests’ comic.

Aside from Nebula and the Raichu, Solstice, his team consists of Frosmoth (Aurora), Flapple (Sunspot), Cursola (Nova), and Rapidash (Equinox). He also has a service Indeedee, Contessa, who aids with chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety.

Keeps all his Pokemon in Moon Balls even though none of them are Moonstone Pokemon; he just likes the aesthetic.

Give him attention or he will die.

Pokemon Card of the Day #2883: Electrode-GX (Celestial Storm)

Electrode-GX is going to look really familiar to players of a certain era. That's because it was a clear update of Electrode ex from FireRed & LeafGreen. Both gave up 2 Prizes to get a ton of Energy from the discard pile onto various Pokemon, and both couldn't accelerate to certain 2 Prize (or even 3 Prize, in Electrode-GX's case) Pokemon. This sort of thing needed a really good Pokemon to accelerate to that fit those requirements as well as a lot of ways to discard Energy to power it up. Cards that worked better when the Electrode user was behind on Prizes were important as well. All of those things were available to the old Electrode ex. As for Electrode-GX, well, it wasn't looking quite as nice.

190 HP was maybe slightly below what you'd want to see on a Pokemon-GX but it was usually enough to take hits. It should also be noted that it was rare to have this, or the Fighting Weakness, mean anything, because you didn't want to evolve to Electrode-GX unless you were ready to blow it up immediately. The Metal Resistance could also functionally not exist. The Retreat Cost was 1 for the exceptionally rare case where you wanted to save your Electrode-GX. But really, there was one reason you were using this and the stats were not nearly as important as they normally were as a result.

Electrode-GX existed to use its Ability, Extra Energy Bomb. You could attach 5 Energy cards from your discard pile to your Pokemon, except Pokemon-GX or Pokemon-EX, however you wanted. If you did this, Electrode-GX was Knocked Out. Yes, that also meant giving up 2 Prizes, which was a lot to ask. The Ability did work on Special Energy, so you could load up Strong Energy on a Fighting-type in the BKT-On format if you wanted to. That was probably the best receiving option, with something like Buzzwole (or Hippopotas if you were really daring). If the format had access to N you'd probably want to bring that to take advantage of the opponent getting lower on Prizes as well. In the UPR-On format you could actually accelerate to Pokemon V as well, which opened up the pool of Pokemon significantly even though the game wasn't really lacking in ways to set those up.

Electro Ball was technically an attack. 50 damage for a Lightning and a Colorless Energy was not actually worth said attack.

Crush and Burn GX was most of the source of the rare moment where Electrode-GX's stats might matter. A Lightning and a Colorless Energy got you to just start at 30 damage. You could then discard any amount of Energy from your Pokemon and the attack did 50 more for each discard. This, in theory, could also set up for an Extra Energy Bomb. The main problem was that it was likely that you had already given up some Prizes by the time you had 5 Energy on field to fully power Crush and Burn GX (and you'd need 4-5 to get a lot of KO's in this format) and it was really easy to find yourself one hit away from falling after all this. If you were running Lightning or Rainbow Energy (or Aurora, I guess) and did see an opportunity to get the big hit in without giving up too much in the process, it was nice to have around, especially since the GX attack wasn't going to be needed by anything you could accelerate to. The odds of it being useful were pretty slim due to the game around it, so it was just something to keep in mind.

Electrode-GX was a very nice Pokemon in theory. The old Electrode ex was near the top of the game when helping out Pokemon like Dark Tyranitar and Exeggutor. There wasn't anything as good to accelerate to in Electrode-GX's case, so while it was okay, that, the format filled with Pokemon-GX that could hit pretty quickly on their own, and the lack of cards that helped comebacks happen caused a very different result. It was a fun design, and you could still make a gimmicky deck with it. If you like this idea and playing old formats, going back to 2005's RS-On format or checking out EX series to play with Electrode ex might be the even better option.
