The Top Pets of 2023!
Hey everybody! I hope you’re all doing well, and I thank you for bearing with me with the last few weeks of hiatus. We may be a little over a week into 2024, but let’s take a step back and celebrate the top ten pet contenders of the year according to score!
Well, okay, top ten is a little bit of a stretch. As it turns out, there’s quite a few ties in the top ten scores, and we’re covering them all. This is gonna be a BIG post, so let’s get right into it!
TENTH PLACE
Our tenth place slot is shared by not one but four pokémon! In no particular order:
Tumblr media
One of only two Mythical pokémon in our top ten(ish), Mesprit is a pokémon that comes with some caveats due to their lowercase-“l” legendary status. But hey, numbers are numbers!
Tumblr media
Next up is another psychic-type, fan-favorite natu! Look at them! They’re looking at you!
Tumblr media
Living, breathing keyring coming right up! If you’re adopting a klefki, you’re gonna want quite the supply of keys to keep em happy, but that’s nothing to a dedicated pet owner!
Tumblr media
Finally, we’ve got eevee! Reliable, adorable, harmless, cuddly: eevees have it all. Be careful though, this species is one of the easiest pokémon to evolve by accident!
NINTH PLACE
We have two pokémon tied for ninth place! First,
Tumblr media
Hey, it’s a recent one! Delibirds are great pet candidates! They’re known not just for looking a bit like a certain holiday icon, but for being exceptionally generous!
Tumblr media
Another small Mythical pokémon, another A-tank pet with some pretty big caveats. The chances of any of us even running into Celebi are pretty low. But, if you happened to meet them, I’m sure they’d be delighted to be your houseguest… for a time, anyways. “Pet”? Ehhh…
EIGHTH PLACE
In eighth place, we’ve got a four-way tie again!
Tumblr media
First up: silcoon! Uh… Well, silcoons get a “A?” Score for a reason. This pokémon would be the definition of a pet that doesn’t do much. But hey, that’s what some people might want!
Tumblr media
I was very excited about this score. C’mon, it’s abra! These little teleporters are adorable! And very sleepy! So far, eighth place seems to be the “doesn’t do much” category…
Tumblr media
Except for ditto! What can’t dittos do? Well, they can’t do much to harm anyone, but we can transform into any person, pokémon, or object they want! Dittos are great! You can’t go wrong with a ditto! Look how cute we are! Adopt a ditto today!
Tumblr media
Wooloo! Eighth place ends with another normal-type pokémon, and another one that I personally was excited to see score so high. Wooloos might have my very favorite cry out of all thousand-or-so pokémon discovered thus far!
SEVENTH PLACE
Just two pokémon this time around…
Tumblr media
What do you know, a “just-a-cat” pokémon made it into the top ten! Listen, as a real-world cat owner, I’m very biased towards any pokémon that resembles mine in either looks or behavior. Skitties are a great pet option. If I had one, I would name them Skittles.
Tumblr media
Wow, it’s been a long while since we covered fidoughs, and yet they’ve held strong in the rankings all this time! Special shoutout to my sister, who requested this pokémon!
SIXTH PLACE
There are three pokémon tied for sixth place, so let’s keep it moving!
Tumblr media
Speaking of pokémon we covered a long time ago, it’s squirtle! The only starter pokémon in the 2023 top ten, squirtles would make great pets for anyone who likes to play in the water and/or doesn’t mind getting splashed with water every once in a while. I also hear that they look pretty rad in sunglasses…
Tumblr media
Spiky baby! Spiky baby! Spiky baby! (Enough said, honestly.)
Tumblr media
Would you look at that, it’s a “just-a-bird” contender! Do you like birds? Do you want a pet bird? Do you want a really smart pet bird? Then a chatot may be just right for you!
FIFTH PLACE
Just one pokémon holds the fifth place crown this year and… hold on…aw man…
Tumblr media
It’s…uh… it’s another cocoon pokémon. Don’t get me wrong, I think pokémon like metapod and silcoon are charming in their own ways, but I recognize that they’re not the most exciting species to end up in the top ten-ish of the year. To the metapod lovers: congratulations! To the metapod haters: sorry?
FOURTH PLACE
Almost there! The fourth place slot is taken up by a single pokémon as well:
Tumblr media
Cherrims are the one and only plant-like pokémon in the 2023 top ten! If you’re looking for a sweet-smelling, low-maintenance pet, them cherrims might be just right for you!
THIRD PLACE
Third place is the last category with multiple pokémon! We’re almost there!
Tumblr media
Look at that little celery bowl-cut! Ralts are a great option for pet owners looking to adopt a psychic or fairy-type pokémon! They may be in tune with your emotions, but be warned: your mood will affect a ralts’. Don’t look to a ralts for a emotional support pet!
Tumblr media
Wow, psychic-type really seems to be holding strong in the 2023 top ten-ish! So long as you don’t have an aversion to a lot of noise, a chimecho would make a great pet!
SECOND PLACE
Tumblr media
In second place, we have another pokémon that we covered pretty recently: alcremie! I personally would still hesitate a little bit, just because I don’t have a great grasp of how a pet made out of a substance that’s at the very least similar to whipped cream, which is so easily dissolved by just water. But hey, alcremies are great! Very few alcremies are the exact same with so many possible variations of appearance, which is an added bonus.
FIRST PLACE
Without further ado, the best pokémon pet candidate of 2023 is…
Tumblr media
Chansey! This one caught me by surprise, especially given how large they are! Who’d have thought that a three-and-a-half foot creature would get the highest score? It really all comes down to their friendly disposition and healing abilities. This is a pokémon that isn’t only receptive to living alongside humans, they actively enjoy caring for humans and other pokémon! That being said, they’re surely not common pets: this is a remarkably illusive pokémon that is rarely caught by trainers, so adopting one might not be as easy as popping over to the shelter. Thankfully, they can be found in many regions of the world.
So there you have it, the top ten twenty-one pet candidates of 2023! I’ve said it again and again, but thank you so much for following along with this silly blog! I’m hoping that the blog continues to grow and be enjoyed in the coming year. How far will we get in the pokédex? Who knows! Who can even say how many new species will be discovered this year? We’ll have to just wait and see.

Paradox PokeDex Redux: The Violet Book
Alright, now that I did the Past Paradox forms, it’s time to do the Future Paradox forms. This is difficult, as rather than being biologically related to the Pokemon we recognize them as today, they appear to be android facsimiles made by humans. I did my best to try and explain these designs.
Anyways, that’s enough of a preamble. Let’s see what these Pokemons’ PokeDex entries should be.
Scarlet book entries found here
Iron Treads
“It is believed that when Donphan of the future went extinct, scientists attempted to create artificial facsimiles to fill their ecological role. The result was Iron Treads.”
“An artificial descendant of Donphan, this Pokémon was created with the ability to roll into a ball as the main inspiration. Unfortunately, it views anything in front of it as an obstacle meant to be mowed down.”
Iron Moth
“This artificial descendant of Volcorona appears to have been built to replicate its forerunner’s ability to generate a solar heat and radiation from its wings.”
“When the pollution of the future led to the obstruction of sunlight, this artificial descendant of Volcorona was created to act as a giant solar lamp. The radiation it generates perhaps did more harm than good.”
Iron Hands
“Rather than just an artificial recreation, this Pokémon appears to actually be a true android reconstruction of Hariyama, rebuilt to be better, faster, and stronger than before.”
“Augmented with android bodies, the Hariyama of the future were reconstructed to act as heavy security. The electric discharges from their hands are powerful enough to stun humans and reboot rogue machines.”
Iron Jugulis
“It is identical to the modern Hydreigon that is its forerunner. It appears to have been built with the original Pokémon’s fearsome appearance as its foremost inspiration.”
“This artificial Pokémon was created to replicate the fearsome intimidation of modern Hydreigon. It was perhaps utilized by law enforcement of the future to intimidate civilians into submission and compliance.”
Iron Thorns
“Created in the distant future, this mechanical Tyranitar takes the already fearsome strength of its modern forerunner and augments it with nuclear-powered weaponry.”
“To combat enemy nations in the wars of the future, scientists took the nervous systems of the formidable Tyranitar and made it pilot a mechanical, nuclear-powered version of itself. The results were devastating.”
Iron Bundle
“Like Iron Jugulis, this Pokémon appears to have been built with its forerunner’s appearance as the foremost inspiration. In this case, it was Delibird’s lovable shape.”
“It appears that it was built to be a friendly and welcoming shipping drone of the future, drawing on its forerunner Delibird’s lovable nature. It’s adorable appearance also allows it to survey customers unobtrusively.”
Iron Valiant
“It appears to be a mechanical fusion of both Gardevoir and Gallade, designed primarily for combat. It’s striking appearance brings to mind the concept of a heroic vigilante.”
“Designed as a response to Iron Jugulis, this android fusion of Gardevoir and Gallade lives to serve and protect the civilians of the future from oppression. The blades on its arms can fold out into a glaive it wields with deadly skill.”
Miraidon
“It is believed that the Cyclizar of the future were augmented with cybernetic enhancements to make them faster and stronger, eventually creating Miraidon.”
“Known as the Iron Serpent, this augmented Cyclizar of the future was built for speed and power. The electric discharge it releases as it races across the land is powerful enough to induce blackouts across several city blocks.”

Even when they are regularly and plentifully fed by their trainers, delibirds don't lose the instinct to forage and gather. In more rural areas, it is easy enough to let them explore woodland and bring back various nuts, roots, and berries - though it is important to check the contents of their tail regularly, as well-fed delibirds have a tendency to hold onto food so long that it spoils.
If the delibird can't forage outside, it will reproduce this behaviour inside the house. Should you ever find your pantry dwindling, be sure to inspect your delibird's tail, as your vanished storecupboard herbs or insant ramen may be found in there. On the plus side, it is never difficult to recover any stolen food, as delibirds are all too willing to share.

Would A Delibird Make A Good Pet?
Tumblr media
For no particular reason, it’s time to cover delibird! A delibird would indeed make a good pet, though caring for one would come with some interesting quirks.
At nearly three feet tall, delibirds are certainly taller than I assumed, but they’re certainly not too large to fit in most homes. While, due to their resemblance to real-world penguins, one may worry about how well delibirds can handle warmer climates, have no fear: this species prefers cooler climates but is able to withstand the weather of locations as warm as the Alola Region (Sun)! One thing to keep in mind is that a delibird would most likely prefer to rest somewhere up high. Wild delibirds build their nests at the edge of sharp cliffs (Silver), indicating a surprising skill in either flight or climbing.
Delibirds have been known to get along great with humans, which isn’t surprising given their happy-go-lucky attitude and generosity. You see, this pokémon loves to share their food with humans and other pokémon, especially those in need (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum). There’s even tales of a delibird using their food storage to help a famous explorer reach the top of Mount Everest (Ruby/Sapphire)! This is a result of natural instinct: wild delibirds spend a lot of their time gathering food to carry back to their young in their bag-like tails (Silver). Delibirds aren’t picky about their food as they are omnivorous (Ultra Sun), which should make it easier to find the best way to feed them.
Their scavenging behavior won’t be without its difficulties, however. Delibirds are said to always be scrounging for food to share (Moon), so don’t be surprised when anything your delibird can reach that they think is food disappears into the folds of their tail, be it actually edible or not! You must also be prepared to graciously accept gifts that may not be the tastiest to you, like bug pokémon that they find outside (Ultra Sun). Just as you would need to keep your food away from a curious child, dog, or cat, you would need to make sure your delibird doesn’t get their hands on anything dangerous or precious. On the bright side, unless they’ve already eaten your missing item, you’ll always know where they’re hiding it!
Delibirds aren’t very dangerous at all. They can only naturally learn two moves: Present and Drill Peck. Drill Peck might hurt, sure, but given the species’ small beaks it would be far from lethal. Present, on the other hand, depends on what your delibird has managed to get their hands on. In a pinch, wild delibirds defend themselves by lobbing whatever they’re carrying at enemies to fend them off (Crystal). If a pet delibird tried to use Present to attack, what they’d be able to throw is entirely dependent on what they’re able to find. Not to victim-blame, but it’d kinda be on you. Thankfully, delibirds seem to only be violent if attacked (Crystal), so the chances of ending up in this situation are low.
Delibirds are small-ish, kind-hearted, nonviolent pokémon with a quirky lifestyle that may delight or annoy, depending on who you are. Overall, however, I’d wager that they’d make pretty good pets.
