Hodgson's Frogmouth (Batrachostomus hodgsoni)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the wikipedia article on this guy was written once very late at night because there are a lot of gems that don't typically survive wiki-proofing.
One of the opening paragraphs talks of the use of rictal bristles, small whisker-like feathers that line the sides of some birds' mouths. The leading hypothesis is that these bristles are more present on birds who catch their insect prey in the air, and thus the bristles either help funnel the insects into the mouth or help the bird sense something is there so it can snap its mouth shut. The following sentence is "This feature is just a hypothesis by scientists who do not completely understand the true use of those bristles yet"- it feels all knowing. Wiki author, what is the true use of the bristles??
Another fun pair of sentences are in the description of the bird. "They have a thick large bill that takes the most part of their face and makes them look like an angry old man" and "These last two physical traits [thick bill and rictal bristles]... of the Frogmouth make them look like an old man"
