Vacation Valley Resort didn't have any champagne tower tubs, heart shaped pools or round beds when it opened in the 1940s. Pre-Pocono Palace, it was just a quaint honeymoon resort, situated on 40 woodland acres along the shore of Echo Lake. The Whispering Hills is one of many forgotten motels in the Poconos. The property consists of 4 cottages and a motel building with 7 rooms. I stopped by for about 10 minutes one Sunday morning and all I could hear was the sound of each cabin’s door creaking open and repeatedly slamming shut from the wind. It appears that the motel is being renovated but the cottages haven’t been touched and remain in a state of disrepair.

The Whispering Hills was built in 1949 and sold in 2020 for 150k. A 2002 article from the Pocono Record states a drug trafficking ring was operating out of the motel. Pre-motel, there was a hotel at this location called the Princess Poconita Resort and dated back to 1880. Located in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.

Loopy De Loop: "I would have to say it was at a summer camp in northern Maine as attracted quite a few French-Canadian youth such as had fathers in the lumber camps. This one particular boy, though speaking French for the most part, managed to be shown the sheer fascination of diving on this one particular afternoon when I was doing some special time with him. Even if it was just mask-and-snorkel."

Wally Gator: "It was a fresh-air camp up in the Poconos, don't you know, having a somewhat modest lake which turned out being rather chilly for this alligator! One of the counsellors at this camp directed me to a ten-year-old buy who was from an abusive home, and he suggested maybe some swimming might take his mind off what he was going through. Which happened to occur underwater ... he was a little scared initially, I had to acknowledge, but just to see him, and share with him such a fascination about the underwater world as I have, may have helped him quite a bit. Especially in later years, after he had to be put with foster parents when his real such died suddenly while he was at camp."

Breezly Bruin: "It was in Sea Scouts camp on Catalina Island, where I was invited to explain the basics of diving procedure to a group thereof with the mask-and-snorkel approach. There was this one novice essentially who was too interested in girls whenever especially another camper pulled out some 'girlie' mags to essentially ogle at, and for some reason, the troop's Scoutmaster suggested this particular scout to me for some coaching in diving as a distractive. Little did I know where his parents were seen as a Rather Poor Influence otherwise, such perhaps explaining his fixation for such magazines. But thanks to a few days' instruction with a mask/snorkel combi--what couldn't have been more interesting?

Magilla Gorilla: "Doubtless I've had many such examples, perhaps too many to identify one such in particular that would stand out. Except to say that such more than likely came from broken home situations such as led welfare counsellors to recommend that these kids be sent to camp as their best chance at redemption, you might say. One I especially remember taking under my wing for being guided into diving, his cabin counsellor mentioned to me that his parents were constantly bawling about their son being taken away from them, and yet when he left on the bus to camp, his mother in particular cried hysterically, causing quite the scene. It may have taken him awhile, but his outlook certainly changed not long after such an introduction. Which was especially important because a couple days later, word came that his mother had to be taken to a psychiatric ward, the emotion over having to send the son to summer camp being too much for her."

Lippy the Lion: "My forte, you might say, in introducing vulnerable children to diving through the fresh-air camp is basically 'shock doctrine' more than anything. One memorable case was at a northern Wisconsin summer camp, a freshman camper more than anything. His parents just sent him there to 'give the parents some time for themselves,' or so the patsy went, and to 'get him away from the TV'--probably the marks of uncaring and unfeeling parents. I just tappen him on the shoulder during a crafts period, whispering in his ear that he meet me by the lake sometime for to show him something. Which was some SCUBA gear ... and I took it upon myself, with discouragement from my hyaenal compadre, Hardy Har Har, to give this kid some discovery of what SCUBA is like. He could only go down to about 20 feet because of his age and diving-safety rules, but it certainly felt interesting without resorting to grooming-type techniques! Especially important as it so happened where, during the middle of the camping session, the parents were killed in an auto accident, making it all the more incumbent on me to help save him from himself. Call this one a case of 'Saved By SCUBA!'"

Hokey Wolf: "Having to set aside the Sgt. Bilko theatrics in the milieu of a summer camp for disadvantaged youth by teaching them snorkelling and SCUBA wasn't going to be all that easy ... yet you had this pair of identical twins, on campership I believe because of the parents being in reduced circumstances, that I was introduced to by a camp counsellor for particular interest in introduction to diving. Mask-snorkel combi, admittedly, but a couple of times a week during camp, these not-quite-Tweedledum-or-Tweedledee twins learned something different for once, and from a sheer expert like yours truly!"

Squiddly Diddly: "My forte, admittedly, is underwater photography as much as diving introduction ... as explains a habit I have of using single-use underwater cameras in my camp counselling sessions to get such otherwise unfortunates to be creative by way of underwater photography. If there were to be had one especial standout, it was down in the Florida Keys during a spring break as saw some highly-unfeeling parents send their ten-year-old daughter to me to 'give them [the parents] some time without his needless distractions of TV and computers for once' ... and when the photos came back, I couldn't help but admit how impressed they turned out for a simple 'point-and-shoot' such, especially one as had yours truly swimming along with a dolphin over a rather serendipituous coral reef. It would eventually make the cover of my Underwater Annual one year, impressed as I was with such unlikely composition. But not exactly in that George Jetson scenario when a cat jumped on the exercise treadmill when he was trying to walk Astro!"

Mildew Wolf: "I acknowledge having to invoke sarcasm and humour as a way to get such assigned me for diving mentoring at fresh-air camp interested in diving. A particular favourite I enjoy recalling is the time at a camp in northern Wisconsin--of all the cheesy places, yet without the legendary 'dairy air' I hear so much of there--I got an 11-year-old camper sent there by uncaring parents from Chicago to be introduced to diving. It was this one particularly warm evening after dinner; we were sitting by the lake looking at the sunset when we were talking about the circumstances that sent the boy to camp to begin with. He had managed not to skirt the issue much when he mentioned where the parents just wanted him out of the house all summer, no questions asked, insisting that he was 'just wasting space all summer long when we need the space just as much.' And the next day during water sport practice, he was with no less than six others who were curious to learn about diving ... and this son was actually quite enthused--ENTHUSED!!--about the dive experience this particular water wolf guided him to in an otherwise frustrating time which, about a fortnight later, got even more frustrating when it emerged that his parents had been caught downloading child pornography online--no wonder the parents wanted that bugger out of the house all summer, yet in the end, some further coaching from yours truly would seek to distract his mind away. And would it ever!!"
