that said, I will fight a bitch who says Pluto should still be a planet. Pluto should not be a planet. Dwarf planet is a good category that needs to exist because there are things like Ceres.

Ceres was considered an asteroid. Not a planet. AN ASTEROID. The dwarf planet category needs to exist because justice for Ceres.

new theory about how Kuiper Belt binaries form, focussed on Charon and Pluto (the name of the paper is 'capture of an ancient Charon around Pluto') but I believe they also did some modelling on Orcus and Vanth. I can't access the article right now so I can't remember everything they did... (although I did find it at school, but it was a direct link to a .pdf in an article about it, we don't have a Nature subscription, I don't think...I wish I saved that .pdf now) here is a link to an article about it from the university where the study was done

that and the study where they theorized Eris has a convecting ice mantle based on its orbital characteristics that led to a news article titled "Eris is surprisingly squishy"

(I also haven't gone back on my no-romance stance, and I hope people don't interpret this as romance between Pluto and Charon...I believe if I had constructed the space cats universe differently then Pluto and Charon could be romantic partners, and indeed I've seen a few people interpret their relationship that way in their imaginings of the solar system, but it doesn't work for me)

the thing about the godawful "pluto will always be a planet IN MY HEART UnU" narrative is. why does this hypothetical anthropomorphic Pluto want to be a planet

like if i'd never fit in with all the other planets no matter how hard i tried and then someone finally realized "hey! its not fair to hold you to the standards of something you aren't! we know what you are now! we understand you better, you never have to be labeled as something you're not again!" that would be like the happiest ending possible

like science isn't nostalgia its constantly changing as we learn more and more about how the universe works, and change isn't always bad

but also like i fail to see how this is sad for pluto

Yo yo, hello again, today we have the dwarf planets!! My babies. The title is more for Pluto than for the others lol.

Fancy clothes also for them!! Planets and dwarf planets can change their clothes and put on the fancy ones at will, moons need to have them on always, like a uniform.

The only exceptions are Luna, Phobos , Demos and Charon (because their planets dgaf about this rule, they don't apply to it so why force their little brothers and dance partner?)
