Have I had trouble networking as a black woman?
I’ve wanted to be an OBGYN since I was a little girl, I’ve worked in clinics and at major hospitals to learn the lingo, and I’ve always made an effort to network with medical professionals. I have never felt disadvantaged due to being black and I actually think that it’s always been an advantage. I’ve had to pursue leads, do a lot of legwork, and make sure that I’m talking to the right people but I’ve never felt like I’ve been treated as lesser than or made to feel like a burden; the vast majority of the people I’ve met have wanted to help me and been kind and I’m grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve had since I began working towards going to school.
I’ve been flown out to NYC and LA, I’ve shadowed under plastic surgeons, I’ve been to lots of lectures at Stanford, I’ve gone to major medical conferences, and I’ve been actually invited to all of these things. I think a lot of people don’t want to see black women succeed and will tell us that it’s not worth it but the truth is that it is so worth pursuing what we want; if you know that something is for you then nothing and no one should stop you from achieving your goals. I use a variety of resources to network and I make sure to reach out to black women first; it’s important to have mentors that will help you reach your goal and who have walked the same path that you’ve walked. I’ve used LinkedIn,l the most but I’ve also used TikTok and Instagram a fair bit, I’ve emailed schools, and I’ve used the connections I’ve made in the medical community to meet more people.
I have done this all at minimal cost to myself and tried to spend as little money as possible; I did invest in a few nice dresses and jackets to look the part but I try not to spend money on flying places or buying my way into events. It’s easy to find out when and where conferences are but it’s also important that you take the time to read up on events, make sure you have an understanding of what’s going on, and keep in mind that you’re there to meet people. I also go to dinners and lunches with pharmaceutical reps to learn more about medications and the state of the pharmaceutical world, I’ve learned about med sales, and I take the time to connect with young reps on LinkedIn so that I’m building a world of successful people who are my age. If you’re a black woman, you will be welcomed and I’ve felt like my presence has been appreciated by most.

Two things I’ll never understand about Tessa’s nose: why she didn’t stop after her first rhinoplasty, and why she didn’t go to a world class plastic surgeon in nyc or la for her latest revision. She can’t have another one - her nose will literally collapse - so why not spend the money to get it right on your last chance
all the money they’re blowing on that house and she’s walmarting her face.

➵  basics
name: saher nayak nickname: n/a age / d.o.b. october 27, 1990; 34. faceclaim: sobhita dhulipala gender & sexuality: cis-female, bi. hometown: mandawa, rajasthan. currently:  west village, nyc. affiliation: syndicate.  job position: plastic surgeon education: high school diploma / bachelore degree in biology / stanford university school of medicine / general surgery residency program / fellowship training in plastic and reconstructive surgery residency program relationship status: single. children: none.
➵  traits
positive: adaptive, diligent, passionate, resourceful negative: callous, liar, emotionally stunted, unpredictable
➵  biography
Mandawa, Rajasthan was a good place — at least that's how much Saher could remember of it. The world flickered in green and yellow, the colors of her mother's skirt as she danced around barefoot and sung, as loud as she could, to the tune her father was playing. They'd swallow their drinks until morning came and drown out the rest. They lived poor, but they were joyful (as long as there was music and alcohol around) She lived to hear the music stop one day, when her father moved away. To provide for a better life, her mother had said as she wiped her tears away. She didn't know how much of that was true, because Saher barely saw of her mother anymore, between the two jobs and the house work, she wondered if she ever got any sleep at all.
Resentment settled in. A few years later, the suitcases were packed, and the flights were booked and sixteen hours flew by like seconds. The family reunited, but nothing felt the same anymore.
Saher was an imigrant child, a transfer — her english was good but not good enough. She felt like something less, unworthy of attention, even if all eyes had been on her — staring (her clothes, her shoes, her hair.) She became a target.
It's how she found herself in between flying punches, her first fight. She won it too. Had the other girl tumbling down the stairs. Detention was nothing compared to her good grades, those stellar A's.
One fight turned into several, and now her peers were avoiding her for an entirely different reason.
Don't look at that one, she might punch you in the jaw — a rumor far better than the ones she saw written on bathroom stalls before. She'd rather be feared, than mocked.
Things escalated quickly, because the world moved fast, but Saher moved faster. Her mother called it a cry for help, the first time she saw her get on a motorcycle, and her father called it stupidity, when by the time she was twenty, she had broken both of her legs — twice.
Reckless endarganment is what the cops said, and Saher was inclined to agree with the last diagnosis. It was sheer recklesness that drove her into trouble's arms and it was recklesness that kept her there.
She was lacking in the empathy department and growing colder by the day.
None of that kept her from getting her medical degree. Medical student turned surgeon in the span of thirteen years. Saher was a good doctor — calculated and precise; sharp edge of a knife. Knife was all that mattered, because care was complicated, care required a level of selflesness that she didn't posess. It was somewhere between the life lessons lost, and that same recklesness that drove her down the highway at three hundred miles per hour, that Saher nearly crashed and burned her career into the ground. A stupid mistake turned fatal. An accident that had opened up a door for her, because she's been thriving in dishonesty since she was a child. Insignificant childish lies turned into theft and now forgary — There was no going back now — now that the lies spilled not only from her mouth, but on paper too. She lied without even flinching. Saher hid the evidence, and she hid it well, just like she used to stolen goods. Play with fire, and you'll only get burned — but being burnt is what she wanted, she played with the flames all faerless and glazy-eyed and that was surely bound the catch the attention of people in need of such an asset to their lives— the woman that feared no man, and no consequences, and spat in the face of anything that didn't work in her favor.

This summer I was poking around a thrift store in Pennsylvania and saw an old 1950s Sarah Lawrence College yearbook. I got to wondering how their lives went so, apropos of nothing, here's a first update. Marilyn Benstock, class of 1957:
Tumblr media
In addition to marrying and becoming Marilyn Benstock Snyder, she had a long career acting and writing. Marilyn was married for 32 years to Dr. Arthur Snyder until his death in 2004 and has both children and grandchildren. In 1985, a college magazine noted: "Each year, 115,000 women undergo surgery for breast cancer. Another million have biopsies. But many are not aware of the range of medical options available to them. Marilyn Benstock Snyder '57, a New York actress and writer who underwent two mastectomies, is author of An Informed Decision: Breast Reconstruction. Her book is based on both her own experiences with breast cancer diagnoses, mastectomy, and reconstruction, and on interviews with other patients, oncologists, and plastic surgeons." In 1990 the magazine said: "Marilyn Benstock Snyder continues to lead a busy life in NYC as actress, writer, wife and mother. She appears on TV and on stage, which she prefers. Son, Eric, graduated from CC in '84 and daughter, Nancy, graduated from Yale in '86." Marilyn herself said in the 2000s: “I still run around in 12 directions at once. ... I am working in theatre, TV, and film. ... I wasn’t intending to spend my summer working, but the piece was irresistible.” Here's Marilyn with friends in a 2014 class reunion publication:

I hope she's still well and having a wonderful life! [2024 - Please note: I live my life like an open book so I honestly don't know if this comes off weird and intrusive!]

Nastasya: *running her Volgirre/Not Tzimisce business, minding her own damn business and not bothering anyone as she does it*
Her clients: I think I am going to cause problems on purpose
Nastasya: DO I NEED YOU ALL TO SIGN PAPERS SO I AT LEAST HAVE A LEGAL DEFENCE?!
Oh she's covered there lol. Not in your fic, but when she does work under her cover identity she's, uh, covered.
She does jobs as both Anastasia, and as Angela Corbyn. When she does it under her real name, it's absolutely as a Tzimisce, so she's not covered there because it's not sanctioned by the Camarilla and therefore she's definitely in deep shit.
But. One of her Camarilla identities is Angela Corbyn, who obviously looks different. Angela Corbyn is an African American woman (whose accent sometimes slips a bit and takes on a Russian tinge) who's allegedly a Volgirre. Only a few people know that Angela Corbyn is really Nastasya -- officially only Panhard knows, but Thomas Arturo knows because Panhard knows, and Elias Athanasios knows that Nastasya is Tzimisce but isn't supposed to know that she's Nastasya. She poses as the childe of Elias Athanasios (who's actually another secret Tzimisce, and a Methuselah at that).
As Angela Corbyn, Nastasya is the court plastic surgeon as part of an informal treaty with the local Camarilla. The terms are basically this:
Whenever Panhard requests it, she's to provide her Vicissitude services to whoever Panhard tells her to.
She is not to Vicissitude anyone without Panhard's permission.
The Vykosoviches are not to incite or be a part of any violence against the local Camarilla, whether from Sabbat or Anarch.
The Vykosoviches are not to make any pacts or treaties with the local Anarchs.
The Vykosoviches are not to provide assistance of any kind to the Sabbat.
The Vykosoviches are allowed to remain in New York City and move around freely, but under disguise, and the Camarilla has to be made aware of these disguises.
They are not to reveal the existence of the treaty to anyone.
Obviously the Vykosoviches flout a few of these -- they help out Sullivan whenever he needs it, their closest friends know about the treaty, the Camarilla doesn't know about all their aliases and Nastasya has continued to Vicissitude people on the side for money. Some things Panhard casts a blind eye to -- she's aware Nastasya still provides services as Nastasya, but since she doesn't want Nastasya looking for other ways to make money she lets it slide. Panhard would be pretty pissed off though if she had proof that Nastasya et al were roaming around NYC using unsanctioned aliases.
So under normal circumstances, Nastasya could just easily point to Panhard and say "well, I did this as Angela Corbyn, and you signed off on it, so I can't be blamed for this."
But, well, McMullen is obviously not going to want Panhard aware of what he's up to, so it would've obviously made more sense for him to approach her as Nastasya and have her do it rather than approaching Panhard and having Angela Corbyn do it.
It's not the first time her clients have done shifty things with her skills, that's just par for the course, but it's definitely the first time she's helped trigger a full on fucking crisis lmao.

The Field of Plastic Surgery
Tumblr media
During World War II, plastic surgery was introduced as a unique medical specialty. The medical world was faced with the challenge of dealing with war-related injuries and defects. These were treated with innovative techniques. These include replantation of structures, correction of physical defects, and replacement of tissue. The field of plastic surgery combines careful evaluation of defects with the use of sophisticated arrangements of tissue.
In addition to correcting defects, plastic surgery also corrects deformities caused by trauma and disease. This can help improve the woman's self-image. Plastic surgery also corrects facial trauma. This can include the removal of a birthmark. In addition, plastic surgery can be used to correct breathing problems caused by abnormal nasal anatomy.
In addition to treating physical defects, plastic surgery also addresses emotional well-being. For example, many people want cosmetic surgery to change a physical defect that causes them to be self-conscious. Others want plastic surgery to change an uncomfortable body part, such as a cleft lip or a crooked chin. Make sure to look for the best botox doctors in nyc today!
Surgical procedures require the full understanding of the patient's goals and desires. Plastic surgeons are trained to tailor their care to the patient's individual needs. They also have the ability to explain the procedures in detail. They can also explain the risks and complications associated with surgery. It is important to choose a plastic surgeon who is highly skilled and experienced. A plastic surgeon's relationship with a patient is far more personal than a traditional physician's relationship. Learn more about surgery at http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/news/plastic-surgery/.
The term plastic surgery comes from the Greek word plastikos, which means form. It was first used by German surgeon Carl Ferdinand von Graefe in 1818. It was later adopted by other surgeons in the Renaissance. In the Sanskrit text Sushruta-samhita, an ancient Indian medical practitioner describes a procedure to reconstruct a mutilated nose using tissue bridged from the cheek.
In addition to reconstructive surgery, plastic surgeons also perform aesthetic surgery. Aesthetic surgery involves enhancing normal structures by correcting age-related changes. These include procedures such as a facelift, neck liposuction, and breast augmentation. In addition, there are injectables that offer a non-invasive approach to enhancing the appearance of a patient.
Increasingly, cosmetic procedures are being performed across ethnic lines in the United States. These procedures are performed in the physician's office and can involve injections of botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid soft tissue fillers. In addition, these procedures are performed in countries like China and India. In Asia, countries like South Korea are becoming popular for their expertise in facial bone surgeries.
Reconstructive plastic surgery corrects functional impairments caused by trauma, infections, fractures, and developmental abnormalities. This can involve the repair of physical birth defects, such as cleft lips, and burns. It can also involve the correction of developmental abnormalities in children.
In addition to repairing defects, plastic surgery also corrects physical birth defects, such as cleft lip and cleft palate. Plastic surgeons also treat cancerous tumors and benign tumors. In addition, they can remove tumors from the breast, reduce abnormally large breasts, and treat breathing problems associated with an abnormal nasal anatomy. Be sure to read more here!
