Costa is visiting a grassroots hub whose aim is to bring people together to grow food and reduce waste.
It’s called EcoSS, which stands for Ecologicial and Social Sustainability and it’s the only non-profit environment hub in the Yarra Ranges, south-east of Melbourne.
Lots of people help to make the hub run successfully, but a key member is executive officer Chelsea McNab, who’s been involved for more than 14 years.
There’s a community garden, a biodynamic farm, a pottery studio, a bicycle upcycling hub, a chocolaterie, a circus dome, a co-farming area, and an indigenous reconciliation area with a native plant nursery, as well as holding festival, events and a weekly market.
Binding that diverse mix together is an environmental interest and awareness.

Yesterday (6/7 Dec) kayakers were able to successfully prevent the ZIM/ZIM Partnered ships from departing the dock for the day. Photos from Whistleblowers, Activists, and Communities Alliance (WACA).
Their media release, sent out while the action was taking place, reads:
A group of activists in kayaks has blocked the path of multiple container ships attempting to depart the Port of Melbourne this afternoon. The ships, the Dax, the Vanessa, and the Star, are currently unable to pass the protestors flotilla of around 40 vessels, which has created a line across the Yarra near the West Gate Bridge. The kayakers held Palestinian flags and were joined by a group of protestors onshore. The three ships are currently operating on ‘partner voyage’ arrangements with the israeli company ZIM. The Dax is owned by Contships Management Inc, and the Vanessa and Star are operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, who in September expanded their partnership agreement with ZIM to include further vessel sharing. Shams Moussa, a Palestinian activist, had this to say: “Australian politicians have Palestinian blood on their hands. Weapons and parts manufactured in Australia are shipped to israel using companies like Zim to commit evil acts of genocide, land theft and ethnic cleansing. Children have lost their families and homes, happiness has been bombed and burned. Yet, with each loss, a seed of resistance is planted, a determination to liberate and seek justice, that is the true Palestinian spirit.” Anna Angel, a Registered Emergency Nurse, said: “As a nurse, I have an ethical responsibility to denounce israel’s war crimes past and present. israel is targeting hospitals filled with nurses, doctors, healthcare workers and patients. ZIM and their partners Contship and MSC directly profit from the multi-trillion weapons trade that commodifies this loss of life, creating devastating impacts on human rights and on health outcomes.” Another protestor onshore, Elsa Tuet-Rosenberg, said: “As a Jewish educator, I applaud those taking action against the occupation. ZIM has a well-documented history of shipping weapons to israel. Targeting these ships costs israel money and, in tandem with actions all over the world, makes the occupation less viable. This has been a successful strategy in ending apartheid in South Africa. In recent months ZIM’s CEO Eli Glickman has pledged the use of the company’s ships and infrastructure to support the israeli government, with israeli security touted as the company’s ‘top priority.’”

Southbank swamp

Like other parts of inner Melbourne, such as Port Melbourne and West Melbourne, the area that became Southbank was swampland, with low-lying wetlands that were eventually reclaimed for manufacturing businesses, warehouses and wharves.
However, the soil and the shallow water table made building difficult.
The Yarra River was known as Birrarung. Aboriginal tribes occupied the area for thousands of years, camping on both sides of the generally quietly flowing river, and managing the trees in the landscape with fire.
They found an abundant source of food and materials among the teeming wildlife along the tidal estuary, swamps and sand ridges. A bar of rock, located opposite today’s Crown Casino, banked up water and regularly flooded South Melbourne and kept much of the land south of the Yarra as an almost permanent swamp.
Early colonial development of Southbank (pre-1870s) saw numerous floods to the south of City Rd and east of Kings Way, down to Albert Rd, where Victoria Barracks stands today. One report noted flood debris as high as 13 metres above river level.
Early Melbourne was built on the higher northern banks, while the south bank was dominated by tea-tree scrub, salt marsh, swamp and sandy waste with small stands of trees.
The swamps harboured a variety of species of plant, animal and insect life. Clouds of birds were commonplace and invariably blocked out the sun, blackened the sky and turned day into night.
The local tribes caught fish and eels in the swamps and lagoons of the river and fished using funnel-shaped fish pots, referred to as eel traps. In the early 21st century, a bridge was established across the Yarra, resembling an eel trap, and celebrating its history.
Nearby Albert Park was once a lagoon, described as a marshy place with brackish water, while nearby Emerald Hill was composed of a rich, black soil, thinly wooded with honeysuckle and she-oak.
But colonial society, with an emphasis on agricultural development, regarded wetlands as representing an obstacle to prosperity and the swamplands had become a nuisance, offensive to the eyes and nose. They were methodically drained – a back-breaking exercise undertaken through the 1880s.

Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is the fifth most planted grape in Australia, and it’s often blended with Semillon, a style inspired by the white wines from Bordeaux. By the way, Semillon alone makes extraordinary wine in Australia as well, primarily in Hinter Valley.

Riesling
Riesling is the queen of cold-climate white grapes; it's easy to see why it thrives in Germany and Austria. Well, Australian grape growers have found great spots for growing the late-ripening and aromatic variety as well. The result is an elegant wine with floral and petrol aromas, often with hints of ripe peaches and mango. The sweetness in these wines may vary, so read the label carefully.
Riesling is particularly compatible with white meat, including pork and veal. It can be a great partner for spicy food like curries, too. Riesling is a wonderful summer sipper, and it’s easy to enjoy on its own as well.

Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Tasmania, Western Australia.

Many other white varietals show promising results in Australia, including Vermentino, Pinot Gris, Fiano, Muscat and others.
Australian Red Wine
Although Australian white wines are up there with the best in the world, the country is best known for its reds. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are the two most planted grapes in Australia and make almost half of the vineyards. Both grapes arrived in the country in the 1830s at the hands of the “Father of Wine Australia”, James Busby. Today, producers make the most acclaimed wines in the country with one of these two grapes, but there are others. Let’s get to know them.
Shiraz
Shiraz, AKA Syrah, is a red grape from the Rhône Valley, France. The rustic grape produces big and bold red wines with ripe fruit aromas and hints of freshly cracked black pepper and chocolate.
Shiraz is also commonly blended with Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre) in the now-famous GSM blend, where Grenache plays first fiddle. These wines are complex but approachable and offer a wide range of fruit, herb and spice aromas.
Australian Shiraz is best enjoyed with hearty stews, meat pies, grilled red meat, barbecue, roasts, goat and lamb.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape globally and the second most popular in Australia. There’s no doubt the noble Bordelaise varietal produces age-worthy and structured wines across the country. You can find wines made 100% with Cabernet Sauvignon everywhere and spectacular blends, most likely Cabernet-Merlot and Cabernet-Shiraz.
Cabernet Sauvignon wines are an excellent match for thick, fatty steaks, especially rib eyes and strip steaks. Cabernet will also shine with meaty stews, casseroles and semi-hard cheese.

Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is not amongst the most planted red grapes in Australia, not because producers don’t want to grow it, but because the thin-skinned Burgundian grape is tough to grow and only thrives in the coldest climates.
Pinot Noir produces elegant, almost silky red wines with elevated acidity and fruit purity on the nose and palate. These sensual wines pair best with mushroom dishes, oily fish like salmon and tuna, and roasted poultry. Pinot Noir is also often used to make pretty rosé wine.

Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Tasmania, Adelaide Hills.

Other Australian Red Grapes
There are dozens of other red grapes in Australia, although not nearly as popular as those described above. Tempranillo is worthy of a special mention, and it’s doing great in Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Heathcote and Margaret River.
Merlot, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Petit Sirah (Durif) and many other grapes are worth seeking out, and they’re climbing the popularity ranks at an impressive pace.

Week 9: Parents Visit & Melbourne!
Hello again!
This week I had some exciting visitors: my parents! On Friday night I met them at the Sydney Airport after a long day of classes and we flew to Melbourne together for a weekend trip.
On our first day in Melbourne, we picked up our rental car and hit the great ocean road, which is one of the most scenic drives and apparently also Australia’s largest war memorial. It took a few long hours to get there but once we did, the drive was amazing. We stopped at a few lookout points and then got Vietnamese food for lunch in Torquay, where the drive begins, on our way back into the city. At night, we walked all over the city before dinner and watched the sunset.
The next day, we went to queen victoria market which was huge! There were so many cool souvenirs and art. Then we headed to Yarra Valley to explore a bunch of wineries and did some wine tasting. The views here were also beautiful. In the evening, we drove down south to Phillip Island to watch the penguin parade! After sunset, we couldn’t take pictures for wildlife protection reasons, but there were approximately 1622 little penguins that came up from the water at the beach! It was adorable and so cool to see them in their habitat. On the last day in Melbourne, we went to St. Kilda for sunset and dinner on the beach.
In Sydney, my parents and I explored so many areas in the evening when I was done with classes everyday. We went to the Grounds of Alexandria for dinner which is a beautiful spot filled with plants and greenery. We also spent an evening in Bondi where we got drinks at the Icebergs with the most beautiful view of the ocean! The sunset was stunning and it was so nice to have a close view of the water before getting dinner and gelato further away from the beach in Bondi.
On Friday, my parents had a great evening where they ended up making friends and dancing with locals at a restaurant while I went out with some of my friends! It was great to see them enjoying Sydney while I was busy.
Such an eventful week, and I can’t wait to write about the next one!

How Melbourne brought butterflies back to the CBD
Missing in action in many of our inner-city streets, even as we move into peak spring, is an abundance of bees, butterflies and birds. Chequered Cuckoo Bees, Australian Painted Ladies, Superb Fairy Wrens and their ilk are often lying low just as they should be making merry. As cities keep expanding, wildlife keeps exiting and now there is a growing push to turn the situation around – invariably by planting more plants. What they homed in on was the understory. While many of our inner urban streets contain trees and lawn, there tends to be a gap when it comes to the space in between. Urban ecologist and University of Melbourne professor, Nick Williams, says it is the plants that fill these midway points – the native shrubs, perennial herbs and grasses – that are “critically important” to insects and small birds. This understory is their refuge. It provides habitat and sustenance, and the more complex that understory, the better. Before falling asleep she was to speak: ’Good night to thee yarra’ three times, then three times ’Good night purty yarra, I pray thee sweet yarra, Tell me by the marra, Who shall me true love be’. Other variations on gathering yarrow for dream divinations come from Ireland, with the change being in the time of year and not being gathered from a graveyard. May eve or Hallows eve were also times to procure this plant for dream divinations. Making a dream pillow of sorts could be done with yarrow, sewn up in a flannel cloth. An incantation was to be spoken while harvesting, the most commonly referenced being: ’Thou pretty herb of Venus tree; Thy true name it is Yarrow; Now whom my bosom friend may be, pray tell thou me tomrrow’. An Irish custom was to put the yarrow into the left stocking and tie it with the right garter.

There are many things to do with children in your Melbourne holidays that don't have to cost the earth.
Melbourne's weather is great most of the time and lends itself for outdoor activities, picnics and bike rides - but there are also rainy day things to do that are affordable and fun.
The Children's Garden The Children's Garden is part of the Royal Botanical Garden. It is a great place to discover the world of plants, particularly for younger children. There is a garden section where they can dig and create. There are labyrinths to hide in and many different types of landscapes to explore. Prepare for a day out as children don't want to leave that magical place. The easiest way to get there is from Birdwood Avenue, South Yarra. The Beach Melbourne is located on Port Phillip Bay with many beaches, particularly along the eastern side. The city beaches tend to be backpacker's paradise, but even 15 minutes out from the city you get more pristine beaches for your Melbourne holidays. There are no dangerous waves because it's in the bay, which makes it safe for children, a great place from swimming, kites and water play.
A Bike Ride The best way to see Melbourne is by bike. You can get virtually anywhere with it. With children there are great rides along the Yarra and Merri Creek, which branches off the Yarra in Clifton Hill. Along the Maribyrnong river in the Northwest of the city is another great ride, and also along the eastern bay as far as you can make it. You can take bikes on trains in Melbourne, so you can plan out your trip one way and return via train.
Community Environment Park - Ceres Ceres is a community environment project that is located on the Merri Avenue south residence Creek in Brunswick. It is a great place to hang out. Children love exploring the wind pump and generators, the gardens, pond and chucks. There is also a nursery, a bicycle recycle shed, an adventure playground and a café with homemade delights. A visit to Ceres makes a pleasant afternoon for the whole family if you want to have a break from the gadgets of modern life and relax in a sustaining environment. Scienceworks Museum This is not free but good value for money and if we ever get stuck for something it always does the job. It is located in Spotswood on the other side of the Westgate Bridge. The most pleasant way to get there is with a Yarra Ferry that stops there on the way to Williamstown. Children just love the many hands-on activities and explorations, where they learn through play about the planet, light, mechanics... Melbourne is a liveable city - has been voted one of the most liveable cities in the world many years in a row. What makes it so is that there is room for life, relaxation and exploration. It is a city for the people with many things to do on your Melbourne holidays.

The Conquest of S.A.
today is Sunday 23-6 - 2019
Hell All !!! we had a nice week end..... went out two consecutive days .... on Saturday walking along the Torren river that goes through the city of Adelaide .. along the two banks they have landscaped the grounds and created a small lake.....it is really very nice...... you will see people walking, relaxing, reading, walking the dog .. etc etc ..... since we moved to Sa I always had intentions to get to see this area and enjoy the experience...... it is equivalent to walk along the Yarra river in Melbourne or the Circular Quay in Sydney... and today we went to Stirling that is located in the Adelaide Hills..... it is a bit like Leura in the blue Mountains in NSW...... very quaint ..... there is a market there once a month.... a bit similar to the one in Bowral..... but better ( and we know about street markets !!!) .... we bought some more plants ( 9 ) and had a very enjoyable time as the weather was perfect.
I might have mentioned this before but it is good to repeat it .... the Population of South Australia is 1.77 millions and Adelaide has 1.33 Millions.... that means that the rest of the state has “ very few people “..... which is a good thing.... now this is a good place to invest moneys .... the property is very cheap and in due course it will catch up with the rest of the country...... now look at this sample ..... a block of land in James Taunton Drive ( Moss Vale ) ... the street where we were living until Nov 2017..... sold a few months ago for $ 425 000... here were we are living now will cost $ 180 000 with water views and golf course views...... so now that the interest rate for fixed term deposits is so low. it is a good time to invest in this State....... in 5 years time you will be a very happy person...... it happened with Western Australia and it will happen here.
the competition to guess the future use of the steel frame as per picture published a few weeks ago.... is still open..... none had produced the correct answer .... we had a few suggestions ..... a radar dish ( Felix ).. a wind detector ( John ). a tennis racket ( Franco ) a portable sign ( Allen ) a solar panel ( Peter ) a Paddle Pop ( Russell ) a street sign to indicate cut de sac ( Graham ) ... all of them lacking sufficient imagination...... hurry up the wining price is excellent and I have made good progress towards completing the project ..... and now some photos
Wow..... along the strip of land running from front to back on one side of the house
now this may not look as very impressive...... it was hard to build.... it give us a walking path between the two sector of the backyard and in front of the Balcony..... you can see the basket that is waiting for us to line it..... put some soil and plant some type of cascading plants ..... this project rivals the Snowing Scheme project in NSW .... we have name it the Parkway Boulevard to make justice to its importance !!!!

now..... this week we tackled the front yard...... as from now the front of the house looks more presentable...... but nothing is finished yet...... everything is work in progress
