I think what makes plankton so…plankton, is that he is focused on being the next “Krusty Krab.” Rather than being the one and only chum bucket. While krabs makes billions with his fast cooking and easy service, plankton could make a more fancier meal with slow cooking his chum and puttint effort into his food, as shown in that one episode where Squidward teaches him. That wasn’t even his fault that it went bad, it was Squidwards ego. It was also shown in another episode that Plankton isn’t actually evil, he just wants to be just as good as his old friend. He wants to not just be a speck, he wants to be seen and heard. He’s wants to be loved and it’s showed he loves it when he’s loved, panicking when he loses spot and becoming remorseful when he gets mad at his son. It’s a good allegory to how people will try to be someone else when they feel to unimportant as themselves…

ok listen. my vision regarding the opposite main timeline:

- the kit or whatever that became Karen was ordered online by a young Sandy. THEY were close childhood friends, had a falling out, and both individually moved to Bikini Bottom as adults

- meanwhile, Krabs and Plankton never had their big argument. they remained friends, but grew apart a bit when Krabs joined the navy and met his late wife

- Karen and Plankton met via their shared interest in technology (maybe at community college??) & eventyally married just bc neither wanted to be alone

- Krabs still started the Krusty Krab. the Chum Bucket is Karen's tech repair shop, and the secret lab is where she schemes up ways to one-up her rival Sandy, who runs a competing tech business out of her treedome

- Karen and Sandy have an antagonistic relationship covering up deeper feelings of both love and resentment

- Karen and Plankton are basically the same as in the show, but the stabilizing presence of Plankton's friendship with Krabs has made him a slightly more well adjusted adult, and the decades old hurt feelings Karen now nurses toward Sandy has molded her into a slightly more on edge & irritable adult

- Plankton basically just hangs out with Krabs and tinkers with his own tech stuff as a hobby, he lives off Karen's business (which is much more successful than the Chum Bucket). he's a failguy <3

Nick Mag's SpongeBob Character Contest

In the August 2009 issue of Nickelodeon Magazine, there was a contest to see who could come up with their own SpongeBob characters, and the winners would get their characters drawn by one of the official artists. These characters, as well as a number of runner-ups, were showcased in the December 2009 issue, the last issue of the magazine's original run. My Favorite Parts From: “The Patrick Show Sells Out”

1. Seeing Mr. Krabs and Plankton make a major appearance together

Seeing other characters we love like SpongeBob, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, or Plankton show up on “The Patrick Star Show” is always a treat. It’s like seeing an old friend pay a visit after being away for so long. And considering how long it’s been since these two characters showed up last, this felt extra special.

The last time we saw Mr. Krabs play even a semblance of a major role was in “Pearl Wants to be a Star”, and the last time we saw Plankton was in the first episode, “Late for Breakfast”, almost two years ago. I’m of course talking about appearances as their true selves and not as Snappy in "The Lil' Patscals" or Dr. Plankenstein in "Terror at 20,000 Leagues". Just good old Mr. Krabs and Plankton.

And as if seeing them both in the same episode wasn’t enough, we get to see them together, doing what they do best - interrupt, roast, and beat each other up. Just what we’ve come to expect from two iconic business rivals.

2. The stellar visuals

One of the things I’ve grown to appreciate in this show is the subtle yet intriguing changes in visuals - especially the backgrounds. Instead of the acrylic painted backgrounds typically seen in “SpongeBob SquarePants”, we get softer, more vibrant watercolor backgrounds.

Two areas that caught my eye in particular were the interiors of both the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket. This is the very first time they have ever been depicted in this show’s style, and what I saw did not disappoint.

The interior of the Krusty Krab feels like the same friendly and familiar greasy spoon we’ve come to love, only somehow even softer and warmer, with various colors of metal lining the wall and spots of soft aqua light tinting the rich red edges of the tables.

The interior of the Chum Bucket feels almost inviting, with a soft shade of green tinting the metal walls and the warm glow of the lights overhead. There’s also the enchanting reflections of light on the many metal instruments, including the telescope Plankton uses to spy on his competition across the street.

Then there’s the popping mid-20th century styled colors of the Patty Planet...

... the intense fiery sky in the fantastical action-packed land of “Pat the Hapless”...

... and the soft rainbow pinwheel design painted on the wall of doors Mr. Krabs and Plankton roast each other from.

Say what you want about this show, but I cannot deny the absolute beauty and treat for the eyes that is the background art. 

If this is how Patrick sees the world as some people theorize, then it’s a truly bold and colorful world indeed!

There’s also an energetic panoply of expressive body language and facial expressions in this episode. I swear, the animators just get better and better at what they do with every episode!

3. The sing-off scene

After multiple scenes of Mr. Krabs and Plankton rudely interrupting and trying to one-up each other, we get a scene where they compete through jingles of all things, and we get to hear both Clancy Brown and Mr. Lawrence put their beautifully dulcet singing voices to good use for the first time since "There Will Be Grease". And they both sound amazing.

And of course, since they’re on Patrick’s show, they bring him onstage and have him sing the lyrics they wrote. I’m not going to lie - the fact that Mr. Krabs and Plankton happily joined in and sang along with him is adorable. Sure, it was mainly because they had businesses to promote, and literally singing their own praises with the amount of enthusiasm they had is not hard for them at all, but still - allowing Patrick to sing a few lines and then join along with him left me smiling all the same.

Also, apparently Plankton can play accordion and banjo now? Good for him!

Side note: him playing banjo is an absolutely brilliant idea in hindsight, as Plankton comes from a family full of hillbillies. It would make perfect sense for him to know how to play at least a few chords or so!

My Thoughts Overall

This was well and truly a fun episode. Many, many episodes have felt meh at best, but I well and truly believe this is my favorite episode of “The Patrick Star Show” I've seen so far next to "Backpay Payback". I honestly hope we get more episodes with other favorites from the original show’s main cast in the near future. SpongeBob, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Plankton - whoever shows up to guest star next, I’m more than certain they will add something great to whatever Patrick has in store on his very own show.

Unfortunately for Spongebob, that could be a dangerous way of thinking. Plankton had proven time and time again how easily he could forgo any sliver of moral code to get what he wanted out of life. Even if those attempts at megalomaniacal evil were becoming more sparse, there was always the chance. 

The latter story about the Killer Krabby Patties, Plankton knew about. He'd been there, in fact, attempting to worm the formula out of the traumatised Spongebob by pretending to be a well meaning psychiatrist. The latter story was no shock...

But what Spongebob had admitted prior causes Plankton to freeze, confused and positively flummoxed by it, because it put into perspective Krabs’ rampant hypocrisy. Plankton was EVIL, Eugene always said, and yet…

“W-wait, wait!”

“He sold you to the Flying Dutchman? Seriously?” Plankton’s mouth curls into a toothy grin, not really out of malice or joy (well, maybe slightly), but in shock at the concept, and that Spongebob had so readily forgiven this incident. “Wha-ha…” Plankton laughs, awkwardly, trying to come to terms with it. “That’s a joke, right? I… yeesh! That sounds more MY style, kid.”

Indeed, he’d never even considered that before. Why hadn’t he? It was diabolically genius!

“Isn’t Krabs supposed to… y’know… like you?” Plankton squints up at the sponge, mouth formed into a grimace. “I’m not exactly brushed up on what friends do, but… with a friend like that, what do you need ME around for?” 

Plankton would never say he was protective of the guy, far from it, but Spongebob’s continual insistence on being all forgiving, even going out of his way to sacrifice himself didn’t… make SENSE to him. It made him so uncomfortable to see it. What did he get out of it? It wasn’t beneficial, it was an active detriment to his well being! “I’m surprised that old cheapskate hasn’t been reported to the union, already. Only thing I’VE ever violated is health and safety codes. And, y’know, the Geneva Convention, but, that’s a story for another time.” One might say when there was no staff to boss around at the Chum Bucket, there were no complaints to be made about treatment of workers, but that didn’t need to be stated. 

“See, this is why you need to be more assertive, Spongebob. You don’t have to be my size to get continually stepped on!” Just like stairs. Or a yellow, giggling doormat that those who purported to like him continued to wipe their feet on. “I knew working for that guy must'a been no walk in the park, but... sheesh. Chum Bucket’s always hiring if you change your mind, y’know.” He nudges Spongebob’s leg, his eyebrow giving a little twitch twice in succession.

Spongebob should have been able to spot one of Plankton's 'schemes' by now, but naivety smashed through that notion like a baseball bat. The sponge refused to believe that Plankton was as bad as everyone made him out to be. Even if the other constantly tried to get his hands on the Krabby Patty formula -- or tried to trick a certain sponge into letting it slip. He was just trying to be successful with his restaurant ! Even if it was the wrong way to go about it.

The sponge could at least appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit behind it. Plus, a nagging voice in the back of his mind told him that it was sorta hypocritical to shame Plankton but then turn a blind eye to Mr. Krabs -- after all the crab held plenty of ideals that Spongebob didn't exactly agree with. Not that they'd ever tell the manager that ‐- he wasn't looking to get fired!

All that aside, the implications of Plankton's question had certainly gone over the sponge's little yellow head ( as had the insult ). He simply believed that the copepod was lending the same listening ear that Spongebob had offered mere moments ago.

❝ Oh , I don't mind if you want to talk about Mr. Krabs , ❞ after all, they'd heard the manager talk about Plankton plenty of times – most of which Spongebob knew was far too unsavoury to ever repeat. ❝ But it's okay if you don't want to ! I guess I could share some stories instead. ❞

Spongebob took a moment to think. He didn't want to talk Plankton's ear off – Squidward had told him that he was a walking ear-ache liability. He wasn't sure if Squidward had meant the amount he spoke or simply his voice, but he didn't want anybody to get an ear-ache because of him!

❝ I mean , a lot happens at the Krusty Krab . But most of the time , it's just Mr. Krabs or Squidward telling me to get back to work. Although , there was that time when Mr. Krabs sold me to The Flying Dutchman ... but he gave me back so it's a-okay! ❞ It was far from the first time he or Squidward had been 'sold' ( or something equivalent ) for the crab's benefit.

❝ There was also the time he made us work for over 40 days straight. It was fun at first , but then I started hallucinating killer Krabby Patties , that was sorta scary – turns out I was just tired ! Which is great , because I love Krabby Patties ! ❞

At the time it had, admittedly, been awful. But now the memories didn't bother him so much! Especially since the nightmares had stopped. ❝ But I'm sure those things are nothing compared to all the things you've been through. ❞

In the eyes of public, Karlheinz is the perfect househusband who always complete his chores well, but no one except his wife, Eugenia Krabs, Octavia, Patricia, Bell, Sander, Mr. Puff, and Paul knows of his identity as an android.
