Placement Day 1: Thursday 21st September 2023

My first day of placement was on Thursday 21st of September 2023. Our plan for this day was for me to assist with the NAVA Workshop. The NAVA Workshop was a part of the USU’s Creative Fair that took place in Week 8 of semester 2. The USU Creative Fair included workshops, lectures/ talks, market stalls, live music all with the objective of inspiring creativity and gaining new skills. The USU Creative Fair was put on for the University of Sydney students, as the USU is of course USYD’s student union.

I emailed Tesha, Verge’s Director about what time I should start on Sunday 17th September, but she didn’t respond. I then saw on Verge’s Instagram the day after I emailed Tesha that the NAVA Workshop was on Wednesday 20th September. By the time the Wednesday rolled around I still hadn’t received a response from Tesha, so after our CAVA4002 in the morning, I walked up to Verge to check in. I must have misread the date on Verge’s Instagram because the NAVA Workshop was, as originally discussed on Thursday 21st September 2023.

On Thursday afternoon I arrived at my placement an hour before the NAVA Workshop was set to start. I was working with Anthia, who I have been working with while exhibiting in Verge’s ArtBox in Fisher Library. When I got there, they weren’t ready to set up for the Workshop yet, so I waited outside until we were ready to set up. First we needed to get the tech equipment needed for a presentation. 

These things included:

Projector 

Extension cords 

HDMI cords 

Projection screen 

Gaffer tape 

Table 

Tablecloth 

Bull clips 

After gathering the equipment needed for the workshop, I assisted Anthia in setting up the equipment. First we set up the table the laptop would be on for the workshop. Then the projector screen and the projector. I have never set up a projector before so it was good to learn how to do this. I know it is a basic skill, but it is a skill definitely needed in my future art practice, when I do another artist talk and facilitate my next workshop.

After this Anthia asked me to unpack all of the stools the audience would be sitting on. As I did this the team from NAVA arrived, and I introduced myself to them. The speaker was Donnalyn Xu, who is also an Art History writer at the University of Sydney.

While we waited for the NAVA team to get ready I spoke to the USU photographer about the current exhibition which is KUBA DORABIALSKI’s “Crying” show, curated by Daniel Mudie Cunningham. We spoke about the parallels between western New South Wales and Eastern Europe, a main theme in the exhibition. We also spoke about invoicing and opportunities.

Which was super relevant to the NAVA talk. I was really lucky to be a part of the NAVA workshop because I gained some really good insight into doing your taxes as an artist and through an ABN. This is a really important and vital aspect of being a professional arts worker. It was the main reason I was excited to do this CAVA4002 class and undertake Honours, because every year I am so anxious about doing my taxes through my ABN.

After the talks Donnalyn and the NAVA team invited everyone to their stall at the USU Creative Fair. I also assisted Belle another intern/ USYD student doing placement at Verge, in packing up the equipment.

Baker's Kitchen Collection Part 2

Hey everyone!

Finally I'm uploading my new set which - as you can see from the earlier WIPs - is a clutter set which will go well with my previous collection. I tried to capture the chaos of baking when everything is out and there's a beatiful mess in the kitchen.

My aim was to theme the object around baking bread. There's still so much more I could have included but didn't have the time for it but I think these clutter items will fill up your kitchens and add a homey feeling to it.

I made a retro inspired stove and I'm really proud how it turned out. It can go well with a rustic kitchen but with a luxury kitchen as well. The bigger size is 1,5 tiles wide so for best placement you will need to turn on the half-tile placement with the F5 key.
